Better than TLJ. In fact, it sweeps as much of TLJ under the rug as possible. Disney's biggest mistake was changing directors mid-trilogy, and letting the second director close off what the first director set up. Knowing what it was, it wasBetter than TLJ. Not as good nor will any be as good as the first three Star Wars films released
beginning in 1977 and certainly nowhere near as bad as the media is making it
out to be.(sidenote) About 95% of folk who claim to be 'film critics' in the 21st
century suffer from an affliction known as 'heaDUPtheIRAss', which I think is a
Dutch term that means they have no idea what they are talking about. Anyway,
with Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker you still experience the 'roll your eyes'
moments, the story suffers from 'convenience' and the logistics of the characters
never make sense - this transcends every one of the trilogies and is almost
expected from any Star Wars film. The VFX in Rise was meh....other Star Wars
productions have produced better. I was hugely disappointed in Oscar Isaac, an
Oscar caliber performer who pretty much dialed in his delivery. The one whose
star shone bright, who after The Force Awakens stated she was not a Star Wars fan,
Daisy Ridley blew the doors off everyone - this version of the Rey character is
what Star Wars films should have contained from the beginning. It was sad to
see the Kylo Ren character be transformed into what Rise delivered, which is no
fault to Adam Driver, because..... J.J. Abrams should have never been given the
the latest Star Wars trilogy mantle in the first place. J.J. Abrams has a bit
of originality, but there is way too much of his mentor's vision in the majority
of his work. Of course, Rian Johnson took a HUGE dump on The Last Jedi, so
bringing Abrams back for the save on Rise was a worthy attempt, nut in no way
could make up for the damage done by Johnson. Also, J.J. loves introducing new
audiences to existing sagas by taking old storylines and elements and reconditioning
them as new - these are as obvious as a $3.00 bill and... Just Stop It, J.J..
Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker was an OK film of a troubled trilogy that should
never have begun without a team of writers, producers and directors who bled
Star Wars from their veins and had the complete vision of the complete Star Wars
saga documented and storyboarded before casting.… Expand

The plottwist are terrible, Rey is a palpetine... **** it is about the Skywalkers and not a MaREY Sue who decides to be a Skywalker ... it‘s not a name you can take so easily... they kill all skywalkers for nothing, the original triology and the sequel one are useless if this movie is canon. It‘s disgusting and a shame for all Star Wars fans who are there since 1977... the effects were amazing, the fights were also okay, but the movie destroyed the other movies, Vader‘s Sacrifice was all for nothing, Rey is the Chosen-one which doesn‘t make any sense... Looks amazing. The score is pretty good (even if much is a re-hash of previous movies), Audio arrangement was engaging.

Ok, so where do I begin? Well, firstly I have to start out with something that may be a spoiler for some, but not for others who follow the news. Ok here goes... J.J. Abrams does indeed rework and in some cases completely retcon a lot of theOk, so where do I begin? Well, firstly I have to start out with something that may be a spoiler for some, but not for others who follow the news. Ok here goes... J.J. Abrams does indeed rework and in some cases completely retcon a lot of the story elements that Rian Johnson introduced in The Last Jedi. No doubt in part due to the audience being completely divided on them. But also because Rian didn't really leave J.J. with many plot threads to work with all things considered. So he really he had no choice but to try and rework things so he can reintroduce ideas from The Force Awakens. However, there is one element of TLJ that J.J. keeps that has a HUGE impact on the story and the ending so I think fans who loved TLJ will forgive him by the time the end credits roll.

As a result of all this though, the first 45 minutes of the film is a mad rush! It is so filled with exposition to explain the plot and tie things together from the first and second films in this trilogy that you can't even take a minute to process everything. But after this, the film does start to settle and get into its grove.

Those who had issues with how Fin and Poe were portrayed in TLJ will love seeing them both come into their own in ROS. The returns of Lando and Luke were honestly brief but VERY memorable and added to the story in a big way. The movie magic they used to bring Carrie Ficher back from the dead to play Leia sometimes works and looks amazing, and sometimes doesn't work and just looks plain creepy. New characters in the film help flesh out the backstories of both Poe and Fin but do little else while Rose Tico isn't given much to do at all. The return of Palpatine does actually make sense though and Ian McDermid still enjoys employing the exact right combination of menace and ham to bring the character back to "life."

But the main talking point of The Rise Of Skywalker is Rey and Kylo Ren. Both Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver put in AMAZING performances and I'm sure everyone in the divided Star Wars fanbase will enjoy how their character arks end.

While this film is touted as the last episode in the "Skywalker saga" of Star Wars, J.J. does add a few plot points that make me think that the saga of Rey, Fin, Poe has definitely not ended. It looks like Disney/Lucasfilm may be planning on doing more with Lando as well.

To make a long story short, The Rise Of Skywalker may not be the ending this saga deserves...but it is the best we could have hoped for given all the circumstances. Best of all...WE GET ANSWERS to at least most the questions we've all had since TFA came out in 2015!

I really enjoyed it. Yes it has flaws, but it's my favorite of the sequel trilogy and nowhere near as bad as some critics and bitter "fans" would have you believe. Most of the movie is quite good and solves/ clears many of the inconsistent explanations of episode VIII. Humor is quite better, as C3PO is the comic relief and it makes sense in the context of the movie. We finally sense here the motivation beneath Kylo's actions, and there's some character development (not enough, but better than the nothing from the last two films) in Poe and Finn.
For the bad though...Rey's Mary Sue problem reaches new heights in this movie, it's absolutely ridiculous.
That healing power... how did she learn it?? The comeback of Palpatine is not consistently explained enough, but i wouldn't have a gripe with that if they made honour to the Palpatine return (you know,comics or books of the EU exist). Instead, they killed him again disrespecting his character and in a totally anticlimactic way.
Following that atrocious scene, Rey and Kylo have their Disney moment,and he dies in a really anticlimactic death too
Overall, i think it is FAR better than TLJ, but the damage was already done, and this film ends being mediocre overall due to that

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Every time the characters encounter a problem, the solution is magically given to them. They hardly have to exert themselves. This feels like a fanfic that was created by someone who watched the original trilogy two times and thought they could make something Star Wars. Well, there is no George Lucas in this, there is no heart in this, and they took every shortcut in the book.

If this were a D&D campaign, the characters rolled nat 20s through the whole movie, and pulled off the biggest **** Their emotions did not make sense and they flip flopped more than Mitt Romney. They even botched the death scene for Carrie Fisher. How you can even botch that is beyond me.… Expand

I can see where some of the criticism comes from but for me the film had everything I could have hoped for. Action - laughs - Star Wars geekery. Brilliant and very satisfied. Bringing back the emperor made sense and the ONLY thing that left me disappointed was no conclusive answer to how he returned. Ridley and Driver were again the best part of the movie, fantastic acting especially together and the return of Han Solo plus young Luke and Leía albeit as a memory, made me swell inside :):):)… Expand

First and foremost, if you're an older fan of Star Wars, the insignificant parts of this movie will move you, and maybe more so than what Disney intended for the "all-encompassing" story that you're supposed to focus on. But, that's okay, and that's what "I" and most certainly "you" need. With that being said, I only have two things to say.

1. When Rey arrives on Ahch-To and you see Kylo's fighter burning, you KNOW the only way for her to leave is to fly "Red V" that has been sitting under water for years, as seen in TLJ. Then, the moment you see Luke raising it from the water, it just pulls your heart strings. I cried like the little kid I was. It brought back 5 year old me sitting in front of a square, curved SD TV watching The Empire Strikes Back in 1995. Oh, how I rooted for Luke like the hero he would become while realizing that his failure to raise the X-Wing made him human like me. It made him relatable and it made me root for him even more because "we" were witnessing his growth together. But, when we saw Yoda peacefully raise the X-Wing and say, "That is why you fail", it established a presence in Luke. It made him realize that ANYTHING WAS POSSIBLE. It was a turning point, for us, and him. Because of this, when Luke raised his X-Wing for Rey, it was a passing of the torch and it was done wonderfully. I sobbed.

2. Lastly, is this the greatest Star Wars movie ever made? Not at all, but it doesn't have to be. This movie does exactly what it should have done. It combined nostalgia, fan service, and a new story into a complex, yet wonderful ending that no one should be ashamed of. It is as if I am at peace now. At peace from having waited so long to see the end of this story. It could have been done better, but that's not the point. You need to watch this movie with the same mindset as when you watched the original trilogy. When you do, you can relax. It's a Star Wars movie after all. Be a kid and relish it.… Expand

Was it the perfect conclusion I had dreamt it would be? Not quite. But that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the ride and have fun with it. Even trying to throw it a bone by judging the personal story interactions separate from the rest still only gets it to 54% give or take. The personal story lines rate a solid 88% or so. But the "wars" part...WARS is in the title people...is so unforgivably bad. (JJ Abrams has done some amazing work, yet where he is a writer seems to be when I can't stand his movies.) The "wars" part of this is recycled Force Awakens nonsense that was just pathetic copying of episode 4 but with UBER stupidity added. In episode 4 stuff was pre-caveated in mission briefs about what they were up against. Abrams got a slight pass with the absurd Starkiller Base and the shielded thing they had to strike the first time for episode 7 because it seemed like he was trying to lure in new fans and have some suspension of disbelief but still make it fun for the new folks and have on purpose throwbacks to episode 4. This time...you don't get that pass. A, you did it once before, B, no one can suspend that much disbelief. Just a few examples of the absurdities in episode 9: You magically only have 16 hours to complete this mission. Star destroyers can travel freaking light years but cannot take off from a planet without help. You can "light skip" from the hip and magically not appear inside matter. And the tie fighters can magically come along with you. You don't have long range missiles or torpedoes anymore. You can't just laser blast the horrendously stupid "nav beacon thing". It is blast shielded because he screams it during the "ground assault". You couldn't just overwhelm the shields. A single turbocannon ON a first order ship can pierce the shields and armor of the command deck...but not that nav beacon. Those same turbocannons dont do that much damage to other capital ships. Oh wait, I think they yelled shields don't work in atmosphere as well or some nonsense. Palpatine can force lightning an entire fleet. These star destroyers have the same weakness as an Independence Day ship. These star destroyers have no upgrades EXCEPT the power to destroy whole planets. Palpatine can force suck people now...but waited until these two happened to be around to do it. We can just sit on top of the Millennium Falcon while it is banking...away from a crashing first order star destroyer. Why JJ Abrams and the entire staff with hundreds if not thousands of people around let any of this garbage make it through without one person saying wait, should we not make it semi realistic? Should we read an Honor Harrington book or Starfire book and at least try? Maybe consult a Navy or Air Force person? NAH! FUDGE ALL THAT! Let's use this space combat scenario a five year old came up with or this 1980s Nintendo game plot. Oh and don't forget to occasionally yell out why it has to be this way because that will work. So disappointing.… Expand

There are still some dangling plot threads, some rushed storytelling, some major plot holes but there is still that star wars feel to this movie. The action is very well done, the twists are engaging and the story finally feels complete. I applaud you JJ for making another worthy addition to the star wars saga

Lots of predictable and cliché arcs/plot points. Acting is good but with the lack of good character development, some fall flat. most of the story with Leia seems off but most likely due to Carrie Fisher passing. Gorgeous cinematography. Some locations like the waves scene are breathtaking. And good use of puppeteering with some aliens. Made it feel like the original trilogy. John Williams is amazing like always with original themes and great call back themes to older movies. It's a good conclusion to the Disney/StarWars trilogy. A meh conclusion to the Skywalker saga. Worth a watch but don't rush out to see it. Will buy but just because I want the set. Solid one time watch. 6.5/10 I want to watch it again to see if it will change my opinion for the better or worse.… Expand

I thought it was amazing. This is what Star Wars is for me. Exciting, over-the-top, sci-fi fantasy fun. Not for boring old grown ups and Last Jedi fans (since it's heavy with the retconning). Critics say it's the worst since the Phantom Menace, but the fact is audiences had a lot of fun watching the Phantom Menace before the internet ruined it for everyone and I had fun with this movie too. It's a return to the old-fashioned, good vs. evil adventure story that Star Wars originally was. No post-modern subversion of your expectations (though it does have some interesting twists) and no bumming you out with real world politics and the idea that morality is a murky confusing mess. If you liked the Last Jedi or want Star Wars to be like Joker (or whatever else boring people who can't admit they like something that's kid friendly are into), you'll hate this movie. If you're just looking to have a good time and want better answers to the questions Force Awakens posed, you'll love it.… Expand

Here even I still thought that they would at least have listened a TINY TINY bit to their fan's critique, especially after the disasters that were Ep.8 and Solo. So I gave them a last chance. But they made everything worse actually.

This movie is obviously the last where Jar Jar Abrams has any say. The movie feels like he just made it to tell the fans a nice farewell-"F*ck you! I make this! Not you! You all are just id*ots anyway!". Yes, its is THAT bad and completely wasted time and money. Judging from the plot holes and incoherent lore, the makers must literally be thinking the audience has an average IQ of 50 and have never seen the old trilogies or know nothing about Star Wars whatsoever.

The only thing I can now hope for is that these episodes are going to be "remade" very very quickly. AKA completely new plot and characters. How about next year? And without Kennedy and of course Jar Jar or anyone who even slightly tolerated getting these movies released like that.
Or just forget them and never ever mention anything that happened in them, like the Ghostbusters remake.… Expand

Been watching for 40 years. This movie is cheesy, paced a little poorly, and tries to shoehorn in a lot. It also is a blast to watch for me and the kids. Excellent fan service. For those who are gatekeeping so hard, try and relax.

I wasn't going to bother with a review, but after seeing literally dozens of user reviews on several websites, all that seem to say the exact same thing of how "satisfying" this film was: It's clear to me that there's some kind of mass paidI wasn't going to bother with a review, but after seeing literally dozens of user reviews on several websites, all that seem to say the exact same thing of how "satisfying" this film was: It's clear to me that there's some kind of mass paid shilling going on. I didn't think this sort of thing actually happened until just now.

The characters all suffer the same flaws as the previous two mainline entries.
The story seems forced and doesn't make sense so much of the time.
The writing and background is terrible, seemingly being used as an excuse to thrust fanservice or flashy/"impressive" moments on the audience without reason.
And once again, they completely butcher the nature of The Force as an excuse to advance completely irrelevant and poorly written plot points, or "character development".

The only things that are positive about this film were it's visuals, and some action sequences. Both things everyone should expect from a film with this subject matter and studio budget. So that's where they get the 2 points from.

I simply can't recommend this to anyone who isn't a young child or quite drunk.… Expand

closest to the original saga we have seen, while also expanding on our new heroes. i loved it
