This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The final shot, back in Tatooine, brought me back to the beginning at the Mann's Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard as a kid when this whole saga started 42 years go. You figured it would end with the Uroboros. All the great sagas do. But yes, it's chock full of of nostalgia, an eternal return to the story patterns that Lucas established in the original trilogy. As a friend said, if you liked the Force Awakens, you're likely to enjoy The Rise of Skywalker, and I'd second that. I'll also say that Daisy Ridley truly steals the show in this film. She's solid in the last two, but her acting chops have come a long way. Keep your expectations for something revolutionary in check, and you'll enjoy yourself with this one. Expand

Then they write themselves out of that corner with it. I think it is a hard 6. My score will not go any higher and will probably drop with time. The visuals and cinematography are where the money has been spent and of course it looks great. Sadly the story requires you to switch off your brain and not question what is happening to accept it. South Park predicted this would be the result years ago and they were right. TLDR you do not want JJ to make a movie without a strong set in stone writing team that has already worked out what they are doing. Sadly they did not and there are endless mistakes in this movie that you are forced to overlook through all the quick cuts. An overwhelming neurological psychotic mess. If you don't blink and switch off it's probably fine. I would not recommend it. Ruined by Episode 8 and the lore problems that created. This doubled down on trashing the story. Adam Driver was probably the best part of the whole trilogy and he acted well despite the garbage he was given. Expand

Some of the old characters, plus a group of the new ones set out to save the universe …again. Nothing new here. As such, there are air battles and light saber battles, a few weird species, exotic locales and a smidgen of humor. Again, nothing new. This one does wrap up the saga without much emotion or true surprises. Anyone invested in the series will appreciate having a chance for closure, but as for innovation in storytelling or cool new stuff, this one breaks no new ground. Expand

Just like the prequels it's an ok movie.

Did you like episode 3. Are you ok with watching a movie of that quality? But watching something that nullifies most of ep 8?

If yes you are like me and will enjoy this movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. [SPOLERS} The Disney sequels don't end on a good note for me. Rise of Skywalker is far too rushed and frenetic and sometimes feels like two films in one, it's like JJ ABrams is trying to fix the mistakes of the previous film for half the movie. Firstly, bringing back Palpatine is very much an admission of creative failure. Not only does it never get adequately explained, but it disregards everything that happened in the original films. For me Palpatine dies when Darth Vader threw him to his death in Return of the Jedi. This is crucially important, as it closes the redemptive arc of the films as Lucas originally saw it - the rise, fall and redemption of Anakin Skywalker. If Palpatine is still alive, then the original films were all for nothing. Of course this isn't the first time in the sequels that canon and much-loved characters have been subverted (the whole of The Last Jedi trashes Luke). Then there's the whole copy/paste sith fleet, which is also never explained. Palpatine is never mentioned in the previous two films, and was only brought back because they decided to kill snoke in Last Jedi. As I said, most of the final film is about clearing up the train wreck of the previous film. Both Rey and Kylo Ren are well acted in Rise of Skywalker, and their dynamic is by far most the interesting thing on screen. However there are still problems. Rey is still an over-powered Mary Sue - it seems that healing is now another force power to be added to the list. She spends the whole film ceaselessly running around and never shows any tiredness. Kylo's "inner conflict" becomes very self indulgent and tiresome. They have multiple fights in the movie but they're still not up their with the duel of the fates fight. C3-PO has perhaps his best film ever, both funny and poignant. Lando has no reason to be here except for reasons of fan service. Poe is never realised as the "new Han" he was meant to be and Finn is underused. Characters are introduced for no obvious purpose other than to sell toys (Zorii Bliss, Jannah, D-0) whereas characters introduced previously are sidelined (Rose Tico). Hux suddenly becomes a spy and is promptly killed off, despite being no indication of being a spy in the previous films. Richard Grant replaces him as the new uber-evil admiral, before being killed off himself. Lots of crazy and implausible things happen, such as a cavalry charge on the deck of a star destroyer (yes, you read that right), force lightning to bring down an entire fleet of spaceships, the now-tiny resistnace movement based in a forest clearing. The whole thing seems like they're making it all up as they go along. This for me is the ultimate mistake of the sequel movies. Disney had lots of goodwill (and money) to spend but they screwed it up as they didn't plan the 3 films as a consistent story arc. I have to say that Rian Johnson is the person who is ultimately responsible for this for basically ignoring canon and messing everything up in the middle film. Him and the ultra-woke Kathleen Kennedy (Hey look! All the white guys are bad! Women are kissing!) are the reasons why Star Wars has fallen from its perch as the ultimate space saga. Overall Force awakes was a good film, if derivative. Rogue one had a really good second half and an amazing scene with Vader. The others have ranged from meh (solo) to very bad (Last Jedi). Now the sequels are done I fully expect a more positive appraisal of the prequel films which, for all their many faults, were consistent in their plotting and generous in the many new additions they brought to the Star Wars universe. Is has handfuls of amazing action sequences with a sprinkling of well done touching or comedic scenes. But it is marred by other cringe-inducing, nostalgia-soaked fan-service scenes that diminish the whole. In addition, huge gaps in consistency, as well as too many too-prefectly-timed coincidental events taking place one after another to move the plot forward and wrap up as many hanging threads from previous movies as possible made my eyes roll up in annoyance too many times. It is still entertaining as a whole, but this latest trilogy, like the original three, starts super strong, maintains a decent high in the middle, but falters a bit attempting to stick the final landing. Abrams could have done something with this story that utilized the existing plot and character, but instead he added a ton of new ones, spent most of the movie trying to "correct" fan outrage about things that happened in 'Last Jedi' and 'Solo Story'.

The last film in a nine film saga is completely episodic. What were they thinking? Still, production quality is still there and most of the actors do a good job. Anyone giving it a very low or high score isn't taking into account the inherit quality of it or the god awful writing decisions.

This movie fortunately avoids any annoying characters, but is really missing a great big bad. I love the redemption arc however, and feel that this could have been so much better if there was more time to understand what exactly is going on with the plot. I do like the theme of love, as I feel that's been lost on many reviews. Just don't expect anything groundbreaking ; it's a fun movie. Expand

In terms of storyline, it suffers from a breathless, rushed pace (it’s as if the movie was on Red Bull), random and unnecessary characters (do we really need brand new characters in the final chapter?), occasional lazy writing and lazy plot choices, and a failure to achieve the same emotional weight as the original six films. ROS ultimately reveals the flaws of the sequel trilogy - its inconsistency, its scattered agenda, its bewildering twists and turns that leave you scratching your head. The original six was a much cleaner, much more powerful story - the last three films muddy the waters. However, I appreciate the challenge these three films - flawed and uneven as they are - present to the Star Wars universe. ROS still manages to thrill despite its weaker elements; and while its existence is not necessary, and may feel like overkill, it still provides an entertaining-enough ride for the viewer - offering an at times enjoyably dark venture into the powerful mythology. However tighter we would have wanted this film and trilogy to be plot-wise, tone-wise, character-wise, it makes sense that it creates such a mess. The galaxy is big, the Force is confusing, the players are many, and just like in our own world there are contradictions and complexities. It may not be the Star Wars we know and love, but when you hear that music and see that opening scroll, you still feel like you’re home. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My maybe unpopular Star Wars opinion (contains mild spoilers):

It started out strong. I thought to myself "Okay the critics are wrong I'm going to like this thing." However, all my predictions came true. Everything from TLJ was retconned. But who the hell cares? I hated everything from that movie anyway. Nevertheless, the damage done by Rian Johnson in TLJ was irreparable. In addition, LucasFilm's lack of artistic vision was on full display. There was NEVER a plan for a coherent trilogy.

In comparison, how could Kevin Fiege craft a coherent throughline over 23 MCU films? Yet Kathleen Kennedy couldn't craft a coherent vision in 3?

While the film had competent set-pieces the story was cobbled together. Furthermore, the list of things the Force could do became as long and as incredulous as the powers of the Golden Age Superman. Telekinesis, force lightning, precognition, limited flight, telepathy, astral projection, and now resurrection? Give me a break.

That being said it was s decent recovery from Rian Johnson's hack job. If this were a lesser franchise I could forgive its numerous sins and overuse of both plot device and plot armor. Nevertheless, it was so bad that only a fifth of the people I was in the theater with even clapped at the end.

Here is hoping Bob Iger and the Disney company examine the successes of the MCU and apply those lessons learned to the next series of Star Wars films.

Perhaps it's the fact that the original trilogy reached me so late in life, or that I never really took the lore and canon that seriously to begin with, but these past few years (re: "Last Jedi" & "Solo") have only affirmed my lack of faith in there ever being another Star Wars movie to fully live up to not only my expectations, but those of the entire fandom's. That distance (and my exceptionally low expectations) in mind, I didn't hate this. It's a very polished, well-acted, and mostly well-put-together film, but not a particularly outstanding Star Wars film in any regard. Where others have viewed some of the film's narrative developments through winced eyes, I simply shrugged in the theater, thinking to myself, "meh, not what I wanted, but whatever, I guess." Where others have noted boredom during many portions of the film's second act, I found things to be average or better in terms of entertainment value. Where others have cried foul in response to certain of the film's more hokey elements, I found them to be relatively consistent with what we've already gotten from the prior eight films. So where does that leave me now? Slightly disappointed, but not angry. Happy to be alive to see this many Star Wars movies, but simultaneously so bummed at the waste of potential at hand. Sad, but more than ready to move on. They say it's almost a bigger crime to be average than terrible when it comes to movies. Here's hoping that's not the epitaph of every IP that The Mouse has been hoarding over the past decade. Expand

But to Episode 9: This irons out what's messed up Episode 8. It doesn't really go on in the overall action. But the story is much better than the previous one. But much is strange: How could Rey become so strong? How did the Imperator survive? Or is it just a clone?
Why doesn't Chubaka and C3P0 die? This is illogical. But he entertains better and therefore he is still the best of all three.

That's unfortunate, given that viewers really deserved something spectacular to wrap up the long-running saga (that's if you believe this really is the end, which is highly unlikely given what a cash cow this has been for the filmmakers and distributors). But, considering the prominence accorded to lesser characters, the walk-on roles assigned to the franchise's most charismatic figures and a narrative full of plot holes, the picture serves up a combination of elements that just doesn't work as well as it could or should have. Time for a rest for the "Star Wars" saga so it can retool and come up with fresh, new and more viable material. Expand

Unfortunetlly this movie has also terrible flaws. JJ ABrahms tries to remake all of the decisions made for part 8. This is not a flaw but the steps which need to be taken to fix the plot of ROTJ are way to much. The logic mistakes are so severe that they feel disrupting.
The characters are so overpowered they feel misplaced. The entire movie looks only into the past and the characters have no visions and targets in their lives.

I'm unsure if i rate it a 6 or 7. The flawless technical, sound and visual part is a 10 but the overpowered husks of characters in a weird plot puzzle are a 1.

JJ Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy had a huge task of wrapping up all these storylines while appeasing new fans and old fans. I had a lot of issues with the movie (as an original trilogy fan who loved the energetic direction of sequel trilogy). There were themes and character arcs that didn't resolve. The importance of giving a fulfilling ending to Rey was traded to appease bitter fans. Sadly, there was a positive portion of the fandom who cheered and supported these new movies every step of the way. The creators turned their backs on that fandom, to appease the loud, vilifying part of Star Wars "True Fans!" apparently, who hated these movies from the start. Such a wasted opportunity to tell a bold new story, one that would really make a difference and challenge people's perception of what Star Wars can be, but instead it is relegated to focusing on reliving moments from the original trilogy. This movie gave me everything but left me empty and wondering what was the point of this whole thing because it sure wasn't hope. If anything, it was about giving in to fear of a rabid fan base. Humor is quite better, as C3PO is the comic relief and it makes sense in the context of the movie. We finally sense here the motivation beneath Kylo's actions, and there's some character development (not enough, but better than the nothing from the last two films) in Poe and Finn.
For the bad though...Rey's Mary Sue problem reaches new heights in this movie, it's absolutely ridiculous.
That healing power... how did she learn it?? The comeback of Palpatine is not consistently explained enough, but i wouldn't have a gripe with that if they made honour to the Palpatine return (you know, comics or books of the EU exist). Instead, they killed him again disrespecting his character and in a totally anticlimactic way.
Following that atrocious scene, Rey and Kylo have their Disney moment, and he dies in a really anticlimactic death too
Overall, i think it is FAR better than TLJ, but the damage was already done, and this film ends being mediocre overall due to that

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
Mal sehen was die Zukunft unserem Star Wars bringt. The Mandalorian finde ich zum Beispiel hammer!

It's stupid. There's a ton of hand waving, retconning, Marvel-esque dialogue that tries way too hard to be funny, and idiotic plot conveniences. However, in spite of all the flaws, I cannot bring myself to hate this movie too much, as I had such a blast watching this movie. Without going to deeply into spoiler territory, I will say that this is the kind of movie you watch with your friends to have a good time while drunk.

I'm not going to go into spoilers at all, but I will say that if you are a degenerate who loved The Last Jedi like I am, you will probably dislike this movie. About 2/3 of The Last Jedi is retconned, and JJ Abrams just keeps the bits of The Last Jedi he liked and pretty much discards the rest. Speaking of JJ Abrams' writing, the dialogue in this movie is pretty bad across the board. Rise of Skywalker feels like Marvel-lite, not Star Wars. This is insane, because JJ Abrams also was in charge of The Force Awakens, which is my favorite film in the sequel trilogy! Going off of that note, if there is one thing the Rise of Skywalker makes utterly apparent, it's that there is absolutely zero cohesion between the three films in this new trilogy. This movie in particular almost feels like the finale of a completely different trilogy! It's really obvious that Disney had no road map on where to go in this series, and in this movie, it really, really shows.

My favorite part of Rise of Skywalker was the exploration of the relationship between Kylo Ren and Rey. These two characters really carry this entire movie, and their scenes were the best written scenes in the movie. The rest of the film is stupid, and lazy, and the Force is relegated into some Dungeons and Dragons level plot convenience. I laughed out loud at a lot of the silly story choices, and I was not the only one in the theater who did so. I hope you all go to the movies and make your own opinions about this movie. Some will love it. Some will hate it. You will have fun watching it in either case. May the Force be with you!

Did I have a good time? Yes. Do I think this movie is good? No.

The sad thing is, this movie isn't the problem, The last Jedi is. Because the previous instalment completely ignored the setup that The Force Awakens did, Rise of Skywalker had to do a lot of cleanup, too much cleanup. The first half of this movie was great fun and I had a great time. But the second half is where the problem lies. Rey is too powerful, I won't spoil anything but her power level doesn't feel earned. She should have spend the entire previous movie training, we only get a glimpse of training during this movie.

The current metascore is a 5.7. In my opinion the movie deserves a 6.5. But absolutely not a 7 so my metascore is a 6. Go see it if you want to know how it ends, I'm happy I went, it was fun. But do not expect anything groundbreaking.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was dissappointed. This remains an okay-ish movie for me, but there were too many incomprehensible moments: 1) The kiss...why? 2) Finn's unanswered question to Rey seems extremely sloppy, 3) Zorrii Bliss, Jannah, D-O, Han...should all have been left out of the movie, 4) Princess Leia...I'm sorry but was it really necessary to bring her back? I did like some of the humor, action sequences and the acting of Rey/Ren.
But why not keep Chewie dead? This could have given some true emotional weight to the movie.
Unpopular opinion: I'm glad Rian Johnson will be Directing some future SW movie (although I had some issues with SW8 as well).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I came in with piss poor expectations because I read the leaks. Yeah they’re all true. But for whatever reason, TROS didn't leave me with as bad of a taste in my mouth as TLJ did. Maybe it's the details that aren't outlined in the leaks. Maybe it's the erasure of a lot of TLJ's mistakes. Or maybe the chemistry the cast has built up for each other shone through. Whatever it was, I came out of the theater feeling better than I expected. I would say TROS sticks the landing, but breaks its leg in the process. It’s not a movie without flaws, and it has many, but it's tolerable on its own as the end of the sequels. This mediocre cash grab trilogy ends in a whimper, as expected. But since they forced this movie to also wrap up all 9 Episodes of the Star Wars saga, it does a bad job of concluding everything in totality.

The Good: John Williams kicks butt, as always. He really makes you feel more intimate with the scenes. The graphics are amazing as well -- a staple of any modern Star Wars film. Ian McDiarmid knocks his role out of the park and really gives you a haunted house monster kind of feeling. More on him later though. In terms of narrative, TROS tries to undo a lot of the damage caused by TLJ, so you can really think of this as a sequel to TFA. Rey actually being a somebody, or clarifying that Luke was actually doing something important on Ach-To was something that needed to happen, in my book. I didn’t like TFA, but it drew our attention to those possibilities on purpose only for TLJ to throw them away without any payoff. So at least we get some answers to things we were forced to pay attention to early on. TROS treats the characters we know and love with more respect than TLJ. Luke is still dead, but he's more or less back to normal and makes subtle jabs at his own poor portrayal in TLJ. Finn actually gets stuff done for once without referencing his mopping skills or being the butt of a joke. These are just a few things that I believe were much needed corrections. But the details of some of these changes aren't done well and end up harming the movie.

The Bad: The movie has a lot of issues. And many are universe-breaking issues. Pacing is **horrible** during the first half of the movie. If I didn’t read the leaks beforehand, I would have been totally lost. There was just too much information crammed into one movie, many of it involved giving hand wavy explanations to things shot down in TLJ, then moving along before you can think about it. If they weren't going to do it well, they should have left it alone. Narratively, Palpatine was clearly a hail mary that I wish they explained, because it undercuts Vader’s sacrifice in Ep 6. It’ll probably be explained in a book for extra Di$ney bucks or something. Rey's lineage reveal was expected, as I said earlier. But the answer they gave had no buildup at all because it's clear Palpatine was never considered for this story until recently. Subsequently, Rey choosing to be a Skywalker fell flat and I don't agree with it, considering she had parents who cared about her and she barely knows the Skywalkers outside of 1 year with Leia. They should have either left her a Palpatine or made her an actual Skywalker from the start -- don't sit on the fence. The love story with Rey and Ben is also pretty cringe, considering he tried to kill her multiple times and I just feel like it’s a very toxic dynamic that has no business being on screen. Force heal and resurrection is a can of worms they should have left in video games, in my opinion, because it breaks the universe in a similar way hyperspace ramming did. And lastly, I thought the Final Order had a convenient weakness that felt cheap. Really you can eliminate all of those ISDs by blowing up one? Lol.

In summary, I think this is may be the best movie of the ST, but this isn't saying much. It's not an *obvious*, beat by beat rip off of the OT like TFA was. And it isn't mean-spirited to the audience like TLJ was. Abrams didn't really have anywhere to go, considering where TLJ left off. But Abrams did too much, too poorly. The ST as a whole is, without a doubt, worse than the prequels. 1) There's no overall story connecting all 3 movies together, so it's a very disjointed experience in terms of tone and narration. 2) To varying degrees, all three movies reused the plots of each of the OT movies, so there's a lack of creativity. 3) This trilogy is basically Rian Johnson and JJ Abrams undoing each other and the audience pays for it, further enraging an already divided fanbase. These failures fall squarely on Disney’s shoulders for a lack of leadership and vision. I'm just glad the Skywalker story can finally rest in peace. Our old friends have been abused for long enough. Now that the curtain is closed, it's clear George Lucas is really the only one who can do Star Wars right. His prequels had issues, but they had a soul. They had imagination, creativity and daring. These new movies don't have any of that.

When The Force Awakens was released the vast majority of fans liked it. They were practically watching a remake of A New Hope but it was enough for them. Although they never liked Rey. That damn feminist agenda right?

The Last Jedi took that from them, it got away from the formula and they went crazy. Who was that Rian Johnson and how he dare to change the characters that only they know how they should act?

They did not give them what they wanted and that annoyed them and it's ironic because many times they have complained about the saga and its direction and if something has become clear to me it's that the great majority only want the same, like in the original trilogy. And what does that mean? Fan service. And that's what Star Wars has become.

You don't believe me? Ask fans about the scene they liked the most about Rogue One.
Vader's scene. A fan service scene. And the fear of losing the ''fans'' forced Disney to undo what they were creating, they also threw Johnson and his film under the bus and they practically announced this new film like the one that came to fix the disaster. A shame and an insult to the director's work.

Rise of Skywalker in my opinion represents a setback and it doesn't matter that this is supposed to be the ending. It's a setback because they decided to play it safe and submit to the whims of the audience.
While that does not translate into poor quality, it doesn't represent something worth mentioning either. Star Wars represents pure and good entertainment but when it lacks surprises and feels so safe and predictable it means that you're sacrificing any emotional resonance and when it comes to the end of the 9 episodes, that emotion is simply not there. That shot of Rey looking at the two suns should have felt overwhelming and thrilling and I don't know about you but I didn't feel it and that was a huge letdown. And that's what separates this ending from Return of The Jedi and Revenge of the Sith, even though it was known what would happen in Episode III, despite the mistakes there was emotion, here was like finishing the business. I don't consider myself a die-hard fanatic of Star Wars but I do like the saga a lot, yet in order to survive, even of its toxic fandom, they have to dare to try new stuff and forget about the original trilogy because to live in the past is to die in the present and for the saga to have a future, looking forward is the only way. It's a very well made and entertaining film and it was a decent ending for this trilogy but quite an underwhelming conclusion for the saga as a whole.

And the Knights of Ren? What a **** disappointment.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie starts off well but but by the middle of the film you start to feel the cringe. The final act of the movie is ridiculous. JJ pulls on a lot of nostalgia which as a fan I did appreciate after 40 years, however there's problems I have with the film. There's stuff that breaks cannon. It trys hard to win you over by using very emotional moments, with fan service. But moves too quickly through one plot to another and hopping to different locations. Of course the photography is stunning though and I did like Daisy Ridley and Adam Drivers acting in the film. However if you ask me Finns lines while better than the last Jedi, still seemed to be mostly cut down to short lines. Princess Liea's passing away did not feel emotional enough it lacked something and felt sterile. Only seeing chewbacca break down crying out gave me the real heart felt notion that she has died and chewbacca is clearly upset. Poe actually looks good at the helm of the millennium falcon I always felt he was a good looking Rogue type in this trilogy. The millions of star Destroyers and resistance ships by the last act is truly terrible. The New force powers are a joke. Essentially being able to heal people is a nice thing a jedi might do but it's never been done on a movie. I really never liked this force communication thing Rey and Kylo can do. Now they can even reach through time and space and pass each other objects too and fight each other! Talk about lazy and absurd at the same time. I find JJ can't really find anything original to create in this movie and for that reason is not any different than The Force Awakens. Expand

I liked the visuals, special effects, characters, dialogue (for a Star Wars film), and the emotions effectively evoked. There were more supernatural scenes, rather than feeling too sci-fi only. The villain felt like a real villain unlike Snoke and Kylo Ren (in the first film). They toned down the obvious US identity politics references found in the last 2 films, especially the first (where they made the Final Order affiliated people all pale looking white dudes, in this film there are more PoC and women, which is actually more realistic IRL). However, as often mentioned in the critical reviews, too many things that happen seem completely unrealistic even in the SW universe and not in line with the rules established in the original 6 films. It's like they didn't even try. The amount of assumed deaths and resurrections that happened was ridiculous. Having to save the universe in like a day with all these variables at play AND the Final Order being absurdly advantaged in terms of strength, like hundreds of star / planet destroyer ships, sure. At times it looks like the final battle is happening in space and other times closer to the surface of the planet, if the former, the hero characters on the exterior of the FO ships would have died as they had no space protective equipment on. More time should have been given to Kylo Ren after he turned. Expand

Plot 5

After 42 years of Star Wars becoming a pop culture phenomenon in movie history, the Skywalker Saga is finally coming to an end with the final instalment of the sequel trilogy.

One year after the events of The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren (Driver) obtains a Sith wayfinder to trace the mysterious galaxy-wide broadcast by Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious (McDiarmid), who was thought to be dead at the end of the Galatic Civil War many years ago. Tracing the source, Kylo travel to the Exegol and finds the Sith Lord on lifes support. He then proceed to reveal everything about what he has been up to and vital information on Rey (Ridley).

While Rey continues her Jedi training under General Leia Organa, the Resistance learn about the same broadcast from a spy within the First Order. Using Luke Skywalker's notebook which have information on a Sith wayfinder, she join Chewbacca, Poe Dameron, Finn, BB-8 and C-3PO on a mission to locate a Sith wayfinder on Pasaana, which is suspected to be it's last location. As for Rey, she will face Kylo Ren once again and learning more truths about her past.

Unlike The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, I have a mixed feeling on The Rise of Skywalker. The good parts are there are many nostalgia and call-backs to previous Star Wars movies. The performances from the casts are simply amazing. Nothing too weird and bland. To me, Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley are best part of the casts' performances. Both of them are great since the first instalment. John Boyega and Oscar Isaac did a great job too.

Unfortunately, those are the only good parts. There are more bad parts in this movie. Firstly, some of the characters introduced in the previous instalment are totally underused in this movie. Specifically, Domnhall Gleeson and Kelly Marie Tran whom they played General Hux and Rose Tico respectively, are not only underused but also barely in the movie and underdeveloped.

Next, the plot of the movie is sort of a rehash of Return of the Jedi. There many moments that are way too similar to that movie and make this movie lacked originality. J.J. Abrams made a mistake by doing the same method like he did with The Force Awakens, which a rehash of A New Hope. In addition, he placed too much on nostalgia and call-backs just to make the movie better and it failed. The movie also failed solve some of the previous unanswered questions that have been set up in the previous instalments.

The choice of using Darth Sidious as main antagonist is totally a waste if you asked me. Since Snoke was killed by Kylo Ren back in The Last Jedi, he should have been the main antagonist for the trilogy instead of Darth Sidious. This is definitely a wasted opportunity which could have make the movie and the sequel trilogy better.

Last but not least, the ending will be a minor controversial and some of you may or may not like it. While the movie is a mixed bag, it is still a good reason enough to go watch the movie at least to finally close the chapter of the Skywalker Saga.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A late-teens fan of the 1977 original, I was tired by this episode (I'm obviously getting old). Tired by the exhausting "action without relief"; tired of the mind-dialogue between Rey and Ren; and tired by the habit of simply reversing and reanimating to suit the plot (though less bothered by the reappearance of Leia than some reviewers).

I won't deny that some of the spectacle was impressive, and if someone tries to reanimate Palpatine in any future film, they'll have some explaining to do, so comprehensive was his demise. What made it worth a 6 was the overall rounding up of the story and the very human ending (instead of the customary militarised ceremony). All that love and happiness on display made for a warm conclusion to a hardware-heavy epic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a bit surprised.
Why? Because it isn't that bad I expected it to be.
It is still a mediocre movie, though the second best of the last 5 SW movies (Rogue One is the one that was better), but it can only lift it just above "A Phantom Menance", not higher which makes it one step over the middle marking (I'm counting Holliday Special and Ewok movies, too!)
Good things:
- Daisy Ridley learned to act above her mouth
- Ray is a bit more likable than in the other two movies (a little)
- At least they did not ruin one of the Characters of the original trilogy (Lando ... though he was nearly ruined in Solo)
- The Story was okay, not great, but okay. Especially if you count in, that it hat to made up for the mess "Last Jedi" left, so in a sentance: the dilettante Abrams hat to make up the crap he madde during SW VII and the crap the dilettante Rian Johnson made in SV VIII
- The new Characters were nice
- The Music was ... in the backgroud, which is okay after the bothersome Music in Solo
- They did not try to pack 2 hours of Spaceballs-humor in the first hour of the movie like they did in SW VIII, the humor in this movie was actually really great, nicely timed, not destroying any moment ... well placed!
- The "Ghost" is in the movie (Fans of Rebels now what I mean!)

Some bad things are there ... sadly
- The puppetplay was ... well, lets say: on the niveau of the seventies - The whole movie felt a little bit like a patch - I still think BB8 was a stupid Idea
- The new even smaller "cute Droid" is a stupid Idea too - Endor is a Forrest Moon!
- (According to the old and by many Fans loved Construction Schemes) Ray had to climb between 40 and 60 kilometers to reach the Throne room in the Death Star ... and by the positioning of the death star in the ocean the Throne room should haveeither been flooded and upside down or not existing anymore
- I actually hate that death doesn't mean anything anymore in Star Wars. First Leia in SW VIII and now Rey in this movie!
- The End was actually too much "Return of the Jedi", but okay, the Emperor tried the Death Star Thing twice and it did not work, why not try the "Corrupt the Young by killing their Friends" twice ...

All in all it is an okay movie, which did surprise me.
But in the long run ... for me, this is "Star Wars Legends" and I keep the old extended Universe as my personal canon ... I think it is time to take out my four bookshelfes of Star Wars novels and read them again, nearly all of them better than the last trilogy!

Plus there just weren't any unforgettable moments. It wasn't as bad as TLJ but it was still disappointing. Expand

Yes, J.J. Abrams was forced to try to fix all of the wrong that Ryan Jonson did in the previous entry AND close the trilogy, everything in one movie. That's no easy task and one has to sympathize with him to some extent.

With the above in mind, it would make sense for the movie to stay focused on the main characters and story lines, right? Nope. Instead, Abrams decides to introduce half a dozen new characters and plots that, obviously, go nowhere or get "resolved" ninety seconds after they are started.

On top of that, the way the story moves forward makes no sense at all. If at any time during the movie you stop for a second to think about what is being said and what is being done (and, more importantly, why),you will realize it is utterly nonsensical. Star Wars has never had brilliant writing, but this time around they have descended to the level of Fast and Furious or Michael Bay's Transformers films.

All in all, a terrible ending for a beloved franchise. Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy should be put in front of a firing squad and the cost of the bullets used be charged to their families.

Now, I actually don’t have a lot of issues with this film. Only 3 issues really stand out to me, but they are 3 very major issues. The first is the pacing. Was The Last Jedi too slow for you? Well, this movie moves along so fast it gives you no time to breathe! For those who just want to go on a fun ride, this might be a good thing. For me though, slowing down and letting the characters just talk to each other is really important. This movie barely does that. There is always something going on or a plot twist being dropped. It went so fast, I didn’t even have time to comprehend a lot of it! This movie feels very rushed. It does slow down a little later on, but it’s still a major issue with a good chunk of the film. There are also WAY too many new characters introduced! You have a large enough cast as it is, just work with what you already have! My second issue is Palpatine. It’s no spoiler that Emperor Palpatine returns in this movie. His voice can be heard in every trailer and he’s on the teaser poster. You’re supposed to know this going in. Palpatine’s return is handled horribly. He’s supposed to be the main villain even though he’s been completely absent from the last two movies. It’s completely anti-climactic. None of the characters know who he is or have any real connection with him. We’re supposed to accept that he’s somehow still alive even though we saw him die! He fell down a pit and EXPLODED!!! They tell you he came back to life in the opening crawl and then go on to hand-wave it away with a prequel meme. That’s it. I’m not kidding. It’s embarrassing how poorly-written he is. They never explain where he’s been all this time, what he’s been up to, why he’s been doing it, how he’s been doing it, why he’s waited so long, or how he was resurrected. Did someone fish his body out of the Death Star? Is he some kind of clone, like in the old Dark Empire comics? Is he a ghost? I have no idea, and I bet the filmmakers don’t either. It’s insulting. The third issue I have with this film is the lack of continuity with the other movies, The Last Jedi especially. A lot of that movie is either ignored or undone by this movie. Rose is replaced with a giant slug monster and relegated to a background role, they bring in an Emperor figure when the last movie made a point to get rid of that and have Kylo Ren be the main villain, and let’s just say that Rey isn’t exactly a nobody. Could you imagine if Richard Marquand got rid of Lando and made Luke not actually Vader’s son in Return of the Jedi? It’s so frustrating. JJ Abrams sacrificed a flowing narrative for this trilogy for his own original vision. It’s selfish and it’s childish. Again, this may be a positive if you hated The Last Jedi. I really like The Last Jedi, so this really bothered me. It’s clear that there was no plan for this trilogy from the beginning and the filmmakers didn’t have enough communication with one another. It’s not only TLJ that this movie retcons. Bringing Palpatine back really diminishes Anakin’s sacrifice at the end of Return of the Jedi and kind of rewrites the entire Star Wars mythos. He was the chosen one, prophesied to destroy the Sith and bring balance to the Force. He did that by killing Palpatine in Return of the Jedi. Only he didn’t, Palpatine survived. I had the same issue with the old Expanded Universe. I thought the reason they got rid of the EU was so that they could improve on the post-Jedi storyline, not repeat the same mistakes it made, only somehow worse. Who’s the chosen one now? What’s the point of the prophecy? What did Anakin die for? I have no idea! This movie also contradicts some of the newer books and comics, but I'd have to get too nerdy and off-topic to properly explain that here. Now, from how much I’m trashing this movie, you might think that I hate it. I don’t. I still had fun watching it and there was quite a bit that I enjoyed. Rey and Kylo Ren are still great, the effects are excellent as always (The integration of the Carrie Fisher footage is pretty seamless.), the action is thrilling, there’s good comedy, the acting is good and there are many surprises that got me genuinely excited. I also liked how it didn’t retcon the Luke storyline from TLJ, they just made it more clear for those in the audience who didn’t fully understand the point of it in the last movie. This movie also explains why Hyperspace ramming isn’t a common tactic in warfare in the Star Wars universe, after it was shown to be so deadly in The Last Jedi. Overall, this movie is an absolute mess and a major disappointment, but it makes for a fun time out at the movies. Just don’t think too hard about how it connects with the other Star Wars movies and you’ll be fine. I can see why people like it, it’s just not for me. Expand

Expand

It was mindless fun-boring that kind of just left me feeling...yay-meh. The biggest emotional beats came from droids and Chewy (which makes sense since he's the only one who'd been with Leia since 1977, but the rest of the character reactions seemed to mimic real life scrolling through a Facebook feed: "On no! She died? That's so sad. But, OMG, look at this hilarious cat video tho!"). The characters are all underwritten, probably because the story literally leaves zero time for any kind of character development. (Things are mentioned, people say "I NEED TO TELL YOU SOMETHING BEFORE WE DIE!" and then they never tell that person what they NEEDED to tell them even though they are prompted to do so by another character.) Everyone's way too busy racing around from Planet A to Planet Z, yelling about needing this doohickey and that thingamabob to stop the First Order (again, always) with no time whatsoever for any kind of meaningful interaction. (Except you, 3PO. Thank you for that mournful lump in my throat that lasted a good 10 minutes as I realized I was watching my childhood come to an end after 42 years.) So, while there was some joy to be had (there are some seriously fun set pieces), and some of the visuals are insanely gorgeous, there was also some....boredom, actually. Which seems strange to write as I've just explained that the film moves at a breakneck (light)speed. How can a film be nonstop adventure, and still leave you kind of mentally checking out during it? At the end of the day, I'm not entirely sure what all the insane whinging is about. It's a Star Wars movie. There was Star Warsing. Lots and lots of it. I mean, have you people tried watching the Prequels again? It's damn near...impossible. This new film, and this entire trilogy as a whole, is infinitely more enjoyable than those god-awful, near-unendurable prequel CGI snoozefests. I'll take underwritten but enjoyable-enough characters in a film over universally terrible acting any day of the week. Expand

From the following trilogy, disney take risks by only using new characters. Also write a plan for it and force the realisator to follow it.

It's as though J J Abrams decided that this was the final chance to slam every Star Wars idea he could think of into a single episode. It almost felt like they had decided not only to tie up every loose end, but then spent a few brainstorming sessions to come up with some new loose ends just to tie them up again. This isn't helped by Abram's signature style of jamming as many action scenes, chases, smashes, fights, and smart-arse quips into every possible second.

Don't get me wrong, there's a great film in there. It's just swamped by a frantic slew of images and actions that never quite gives enough space to develop plot tension or let us care for the characters. A few bits of filmic surgery, such as amputating the unnecessary plot about finding a secret map across the stars, but first finding the secret dagger that will lead to the secret map, but first finding the secret space-ship in the forbidden desert that contains the clue to the dagger to the map... you get the idea. This wholly unnecessary opening sub-plot takes over an hour and destroys any sense of momentum that the film could have had. Once the film hits its stride, such as the magnificent clash between Rey and Kylo Ren on old imperial ruins in the middle of a violent ocean, it does really well. But by the time we get there, we're already exhausted from the non-stop action that doesn't seem to go anywhere much.

Some day, I think someone needs to sit Mr Abrams down and have a little chat about tight editing and superfluous plots.

Just missed the mark on storytelling. First half is very rushed. No time to feel or think about anything for too long. True SW fans will most likely not love it. Lots of predictable and cliché arcs/plot points. Acting is good but with the lack of good character development, some fall flat. most of the story with Leia seems off but most likely due to Carrie Fisher passing. Gorgeous cinematography. Some locations like the waves scene are breathtaking. And good use of puppeteering with some aliens. Made it feel like the original trilogy. John Williams is amazing like always with original themes and great call back themes to older movies. It's a good conclusion to the Disney/StarWars trilogy. A meh conclusion to the Skywalker saga. Worth a watch but don't rush out to see it. Will buy but just because I want the set. Solid one time watch. 6.5/10 I want to watch it again to see if it will change my opinion for the better or worse. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was very enjoyable but just doesn't live up to the hype. Rey's character just wasn't very interesting and I thought she was really boring at times. Hated how they would "kill" off characters just to bring them back, made the real deaths in the film lose some of there touch, because you don't know what to believe. The lightsaber fights were not very good as they just looked incredibly slow, and ironically the fights ended really quickly. However, the visuals were amazing and the acting was rather nice. I enjoyed kylo ren in this film as he was a very intimidating villian (for the first half of the film). C3PO was amazing and carried the first half of the film in my opinion.

Overall I thought it was a great film for new starwars fans however not to the old fans.(although some parts and throwback were enjoyable for the old fans).

:) This was just my opinion however it might change overtime.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went into the theater with not very high expectations since I heard about how this film was bringing back Palpatine, main villain of the prequel and original trilogies and having him be the one who was secretly pulling the strings. Obviously not original! But it turned out to better than I expected. It moved at a much more rapid pace than TLJ so I didn't feel like it was stretched out. It also gave a more convincing albeit unsettling answer to the question about the protagonist Rey's family heritage rather than just sticking with the "it is nothing important" line. The action sequences were great and the long presumed dead Emperor was successfully portrayed as a terrifying and diabolical figure who was willing to anything to continue the Sith line. But after seeing the extent of his powers, the way Palpatine died seemed underwhelming. The kiss between Rey and the now-redeemed Kylo Ren seemed forced into the story and the ending scene where Rey adopts the Skywalker name while wielding a yellow lightsaber was a head scratcher. In the end, I can just say the film was alright because though it wasn't a complete mess, it felt like there was something missing. Expand

Stream to Big Screen, welcome back you are. This week we are reviewing the long awaited third film of the newest trilogy from the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker. This movie reprises the roles of many of the cult classic’s favorites dating back to the 70s. But let’s get to the review.

Honestly, this movie is a letdown for the Disney/Lucasfilm’s brand. In a way this felt like the producers just going through the motions to end this neverending story. My sentiment is definitely heighten coming off of Disney’s other colossal film product, Avengers: Endgame, from this summer. You can’t “end” one properly and just let the other suffer. I’m not sure who dropped the ball on this but we had a movie where all of the stakes were on the line and it felt completely lifeless. We went from planet to planet, searching for their Maltese falcon that will save us… just to realize we have to find something else insignificant to eat up 20 minutes of theater time. We get your formula Star Wars… particularly in this trilogy. But for 2 hours plus, we end up at the obvious ending and they still expect us to be wowed. I think the diehard fan base, which I am not even though I’ve seen all of the movies except Solo, deserves much more than what they got from this film. Even in the scenery, nothing new was even explored in this film. Same old desert, rain forest etc. One thing I did enjoy about the last Star Wars film Last Jedi was the scenery they gave us. That red salt scene at the end… hot fire. This movie not so much. And don’t even get me started on the lame acting in this movie.

Now don’t get me wrong, the story of Star Wars in this recent trilogy is annoying at best but it’s still a wonder to see visually on the big screen. This movie does have some really good, yet unoriginal action scenes, throughout. Who doesn’t love racing around spaceships, lightsaber duels, endless inaccurate blaster shots by the bad guys. No seriously, even though I was bored with the movie, I was enthralled by the constant barrage of action and entertainment.

Long story short, nothing I could say would stop a Star Wars fan from seeing this movie. So let them enjoy their big popcorn. Everyone else, you have to have seen all of the other movies to understand whats going on. So it’s not worth wasting the theater monies on this film. Check it out on Disney+, if you ever catch up on the other installments of Star Wars.

May the force be with you.

You don’t have the gaping plot holes or downright idiocy we witnessed in The Last Jedi, and there are no random casino scenes or important characters getting killed like they’re just Star Trek red shirts, but this movie really suffers from trying to do too much at once. It’s like they were trying to play damage control after the mess Rían Johnson left behind, offer the obligatory fan service, and still write a compelling story. Unfortunately, that means the movie is really disjointed, frantic, and somewhat difficult to follow. There are a lot of “well, that was convenient” moments or scenes where you’re left scratching your head and saying, “How did they know to do that?”
It wasn’t all bad. The effects are good, the actors manage to look like they’re holding it together (which is more than can be said for the prequel trilogy), and they really do wrap up the story in a semi-satisfactory way. In particular, the last few minutes of the movie are probably the finest moments of the film, but the two hours leading up to it often feel more like Michael Bay tried to make a movie about a Picasso painting of Star Wars: you recognize what you’re seeing, but nothing is quite where you think it belongs, there’s an awful lot going on, and everything must inevitably explode.

It often feels as though it is scrambling to please everyone it can, and in doing so succeeds in pleasing few. By lacking any sense of identity or purpose, it brings the disjointed trilogy to a stumbling conclusion. While visually stunning, with a phenomenal soundtrack, the movie fails to provide much logic or reason to what happens. Ultimately, if you just go along for the ride, this will be a fun, visually impressive move. Yet, if you are hoping for more than spectacle, you will be disappointed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Star Wars: Episode IX is the first movie I learnt of with my senses and knowledge of Star Wars intact. Just before this movie was coming I watched all the previous movies so that I could catch up before this movie came. I wasn't born until The Phantom Menace, I didn't know anything about the other movies since I used to think Star Wars is only a cartoon, then when The Force Awakens came I had my board exams going on. And The Last Jedi was getting so much hate I thought Star Wars is just another franchise being done to death like Jurassic Park or The Matrix. So overall saying, this is the first Star Wars movie that I knew how to react on when it released. And that was definitely not a good reaction.
So first of all my problem is with how "convenient" the plot twists are. How on earth are the plot twists done so badly that there doesn't seem to be anything at stake! Rey and friends are getting sucked in sand, the animal inside is friendly. C3PO's memory gets formatted, R2D2 restores it. They don't know where to go, Rey just holds her knife and COMPARES IT WITH THE SURROUNDINGS AND FINDS HER WAY!?! And no, I'm not even getting to the dozen things that happened when she had to defeat Palpatine. Nothing matters in this movie for that matter. What happened to Rey becoming evil? What happened to the rebels on the planet where C3PO's memory was formatted? They were never brought up again.
The movie completely massacred everything that Star Wars stands for. I think the problem with all the sequel movies is that they are pandering to a much, much younger generation. Anything that could have been a little too mature was probably thrown out of the window by Mickey Mouse, because then how will the little girls from Middle East have Rey dolls if she did something mature like Luke and Anakin? Palpatine came back to life only so that Rey could smash him again and show how strong and smart she is. Ben Solo died only because he was trying to save Rey for some reason, even though he has Jedi powers so he could have just moved her out of the path. No culture, lifestyle, important character, backstory - nothing happened in here. It was just picking up on the disaster that Episode VIII was.
And the worst part in the entire movie was when Rey took, or rather should I say, STOLE the Skywalker surname. What even was that scene? The way Luke and Leia were standing in the sky, they looked like her parents. The second worst for me would be the Rey and Ben kissing scene. I don't know how to say this, but Rey has a very sister-like look to her. Why would Ben ever do that? But of course, not everything is bad about Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Palpatine. Like I said before, it has a really awesome CGI, probably the best in the entire Star Wars franchise. The cinematography was also very good. The background score added to the intensity.
And the best part - it's the last movie of the sequel trilogy. Finally this thing ended. We don't have to watch any more of Rey Palpatine anymore. I'm glad I've watched every single Star Wars movie now, so I have been able to catch up with the trend and now I can talk to anyone about Star Wars whenever the topic comes up.

Abrams returned to Episode IX, who was already in charge of Episode VII, which he succeeded in because he went to safety. This is no longer the case with Episode IX, and unfortunately he didn't quite succeed here. Overall, the story is a bit like Episode VI, but that's not quite a problem. I don't want to spoiler, but the main problem here is mainly how bad some scenes are. The characters are already dead all of a sudden, and overall it doesn't work and it's not exactly the best story. The effects are excellent, as always with Star Wars movies and music as well, and in the end it's a good movie, but it doesn't end the saga very well. After the amazing Episode VII, which copied Episode IV, and the excellent Episode VIII, which came up with something completely new, here we have Episode IX, which throws dirt on the Star Wars trilogy and destroyed everything it built over the years. Unfortunately, I still have to hold the opinion that Episode VII should never have occurred. Expand

Has a fun adventure. For me, everything to do with the Emperor is how many fans felt about Luke in Ep 8. The weakest of its trilogy. Anticlimactic and kind of flat.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A film all in all beautiful but disappointing if you look at the rest of the saga. There are enough moments of action and twists throughout the film but there are too many letes that almost fall asleep, then it's all very repetitive and most things seem already seen and others don't really have their heads. The special effects and acting are two wonderful aspects but the plot is perhaps a little disappointing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While with a nice concept and an excellent director, the ninth installment of the Star wars franchise has a lot of plot issues, like the thing Poe and Finn wanted to say, but no one heard even at the end of the movie.
If the script was a little bit more polished, this could have been the best movie form the series Overall a decent film.

While I haven't been over the moon for this new trilogy, I must admit that I was on the more enthusiastic side of the crowd when it came to the extremely divisive opinions towards these movies. The Force Awakens was fantastic for me and The Last Jedi was interesting if a bit broken...broken because that last movie took such radical twist and turns that now, more than ever, it is painfully obvious that it left the screenwriters scratching their heads as of to what to do next and the result is this: The Rise of Skywalker, probably the messiest of the Star Wars movies. It pains me to say it because Star Wars is such a special series in the movie industry and I love it, but their is no saving this one for some of the faults it commits. The return of the Emperor is a direct response to the death of Snoke in the last movie and unfortunately their isn't enough justification, enough compelling reasoning for his return, he is just the new bad guy. The characters, all of which had interesting arcs constructed for them in the previous movies have little development because the plot moves extremely fast towards trying to build a way to get to its final fight- but forgets to leave space for the characters to grow or finish their arcs and the questions satisfyingly - we do find answers here, some of which we have been urging to find out about in the last 5 years, but because of this problem all of them lack punch. Furthermore, all logic is thrown out the window- Star Wars is a fantasy but it has always been grounded within its own fantasy, but the conveniences and over the top action and power upgrades presented here within the Force driven characters and even the human characters makes the whole thing feel unbearably cheap and hard to follow. This movie is not only a disappointment but it also cheapens the whole trilogy because it makes a disservice to everything constructed up to that point. Not all is bad...this is Star Wars after all, and their is some fun to be had, John Williams score is fantastic as always and the visuals are beautiful to look at- I wouldn't judge anyone if they find it pleasantly entertaining- but for people following the series passionately, this is a low blow.
