This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So the great stuff: It's big, bold, action packed and filmed with some great cinematography, just what was needed for a cinemas blockbuster.
Now the bad: It's big, bold, action packed and very loud, not really what made the core of TREK (although it seems the reboot is moving more and more to a full on action franchise)

The movie has clearly been written by someone with a lot of love for the original material as it's jammed packed with jokes and easter eggs that point back to the original.
They line up some really great ideas and emperral the various members of the crew into their own little story arcs aaaaaaaaand then seem to hit creative bankruptcy, the final twist in the antagonists origin story and motivation is both rush and utterly nonsensical, and also leaves more questions then answers.

Also can't figure out why they even needed the "super weapon" that needs to be delivered by air vents (on space stations / ships that are supposed to be able to cope with decompression issues when they already had access to an unlimited swarm of drones and ships that were made on the planet that can rip through anything and everything kind of makes the clandestine efforts to trap the E and capture the other half of the super weapon utterly redundant. (also what about the first half of the weapon as they ancients sent both halves into space?)

As the 13th film, it is definitely not as good as the J.J. Abrams' first two reboots. Yes, the CGI is terrific, and the scenery of Dubai provides an effective futuristic backdrop. There is an interesting female alien in this story, and the main Star Trek cast is a pleasure to see. Yet the plot doesn't really hold water. This seems more like a generic action movie, rather than a real Star Trek film. The best of Star Trek provided good characters with even the villains having realistic motivation, and maybe even a moral to the story. In this film, the rationale for the Enterprise to rescue the crew of the damsel in distress doesn't seem right. The motivation for the lead villain isn't revealed until the last 1/4 of the film, when it seems like too little too late. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Trek (and it's Trekker, not Trekkie!) has been a thread throughout my whole life and was a big, big thing between me, my Dad and my kids. As a scientist and people-watcher it ticks all my boxes. I cannot express how disappointing STB is and can only say it is for those with a short attention span, hooked on effects and non-stop action. Most reviews haven't yet been posted by life-long fans. JJ, why did you desert the directors chair! Was Jonathan Frakes busy as well?? BIG mistake.
Very, very thin plot, in spite of the quality and the easy interaction (spot on) of the Enterprise cast to exploit. Trek is ALL about the detail and the human condition and Roddenberry would have been appalled. With the huge universe of possibilities out there and all of Roddenbury's "what-if" plots from past TV episodes is yet another disaffected bad-guy all they could come up with? I know almost nothing about him, where he got his technology from; whose artefact was it and why was it being given from one unseen race to another (never to be seen again); what part of the galaxy/universe was it? Where there aliens or droids in those ships? What was the nature of the weapon and who developed it and why? etc, etc, etc. On top of this, Spock, fat-faced, blubbing and indecisive? NEVER!
Where was the onward development of the continuing crew story, to connect past and future. Where were the beloved references to our reality? The "proper" science? The trashing of the Enterprise was over in moments and without much drama with the crash landing of the saucer section not A PATCH on the one covered with huge emotion with the Next Generation crew, the personal moments between the crew where fleeting and the same old banter. No new information. Nothing I cared about. The dare-devil manoeuvre with the USS Franklin diving into the water was also a "blink and you miss it" potential stunner.
Basically, all been done, and better, before, Fast and Furious in Space is the best description I've seen so far. I've had a terrific ride for 50 years and it was bound to end eventually but it's sad to see it come to this. Not even an Idris moment of tenseness to drool over. Thank God for the series boxed sets.

No it was not as good as many of the previous Star Trek films I’ve seen, but it was not terrible either. I did keep thinking, though, that many of these actors must have long term contracts, since they seemed just a little bored, especially Chris Pine. This comment does not apply to Simon Pegg, but he may have had a bigger stake in the game since he also worked on the script. Best of all, though, was Sofia Boutella as Jaylah, and I wondered why Krall had so much energy and was so interesting, until I realized it was the great Idris Elba. I pined for the old cast, none of whom were as lithe and slick as the younger generation, but all of whom had more humanity and personality. Still, there was plenty of action to keep me awake and I enjoyed myself. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good: Impressive action scenes
Bad: Everything else

Movie starts with Kirk proposing to work as the head of the space station and quit exploring space.... The movie doesn't tell anything about the station and its purpose. Then some alien arrives and star fleet sends the enterprise on a mission to find the aliens crew. The movie does not tell anything about the alien or what it might have said to convince star fleet to believe the story without further evidence. Spoks part in the movie is reduced to slapstick comments. The bad guy controls a massive army of ships (millions) and is angry that he could not leave the planet. In the end, the movie tells that the bad guy is in fact the former captain of the uss franklin which is stranded on the mysterious planet. another alien uses his stranded ship as a house and he seems to just have forgotten about it. the crew of the enterprise needs about five minutes to fix the stranded ship and escape with it. to free their captured team mates, they have to fight against 10 or 15 soldiers of the bad guy in what looks like a scout camp. their alien companion just looks different but one doesn't get to know it any further. the bad guy wants to use a secret weapon against star fleet to get revenge for them not rescuing him and his crew. AAArrrgh, I don't want to continue. This is obviously a **** movie. Even if you are not a Star Trek fan, it has nothing to offer but great cgi scenes.

Prior to going to the movie I was surprised to see the movieI had high hopes for this third installment of the new Star Trek series and was somewhat disappointed in this movie. It is certainly the lessor of the three so far in this series. Prior to going to the movie I was surprised to see the movie scored less than 70 on Metacritic. And the movie started out great. After the first 30 minutes and the attack on the Starship Enterprise scene, I was on my way to rating this movie a 9. However, the middle of the movie was very average and I think the director missed out on opportunities to expand on the story line. Still, I was on my way to giving the movie a high rating. But the 'twist' they through in at the end of the movie makes no sense at all and to me really downgraded the overall movie. It got me and my wife both questioning how the overall movie really fit together as the 'twist' at the end really did not fit well at all with the rest of the movie. I know these types of movies are fantasy, just as with the Avenger series. But you at least need a story line that is plausible within the context of the movie. When you see the movie you'll know what I mean. So in the end, an average movie which is disappointing since I expected so much more. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Thankfully, this movie was not as bad as Star Trek Into Darkness. It wasn't so obsessed with saluting an older, better movie (unlike the past two Abrams flicks) that it was able to branch out and create it's own story in the Star Trek universe. Still, some pitfalls remain.

First, what it did well:

This movie provided a solid, entertaining lazy summer flick. The special effects were good. The story was okay (minus the plot holes listed below). And the acting was adequate. It didn't knock things out of the park, but it checked all the boxes to provide a passable movie experience.

I thought the movie did a good job capturing the emotions of the main characters. Kirk is reflecting on the fact that he is now a year older than his dad ever was. Spock is confronting his mortality as his alternate reality self dies (a tribute to Leonard Nimoy). The tension in these short scenes is real, although unfortunately it is never tied together in a conclusion. They don't resolve the conflicts with their inner demons, so these moments end up being space fillers.

What it did bad:

Character development. Character development. Character development. I can't harp on this enough. Not for the Enterprise crew, we know them after three movies. For the new characters that were introduced. At the end of the movie, we still know absolutely nothing about them. "Lassie" for example (I don't even know her actual name, that's how weak the character development was). The only thing I know about her is that her father died getting her out of the prison, and yet she's popping corks with Kirk at the end of the movie like all the backstory on her is cemented.

The villain: character development was very weak on him as well. We never got a sense of what he wanted to achieve, or why he was doing what he was doing. Abrams also has this bad habit of trying to rush in a major surprise 15 mins before the credits roll, and he usually does it in a very sloppy way. Uhura walks past a monitor and realizes the bad guy alien is really a century old Federation Captain? Yeah right. So let me get this straight, he crash lands on this planet, somehow lives to the age of 150 and turns into an alien, creates a new crew of shock troops with alien techno-wank (everything from energy phasers to swarm ships capable of taking down the Enterprise) and he wants to destroy the federation base for...reasons. None of this is ever explained.

And then, at the climax of the battle with the alien swarm, we need to easy button to get our heroes out of the massive attack that the alien launches on the station. Solution: they just play the radio at full blast and the swarm dies. No really, that's what they did. VHF causes the networked drones to blow up? Maybe if they were playing Nickelback.

Also, that motorcycle. No way in hell it would run after sitting there for 150 years. The gas alone would have gone bad. The Jurrasic World jeeps had a better chance.

Star Trek Beyond is another CGI action-fest that should've ended 25 minutes earlier if that's all it wanted to be. The callous way matters of the heart were weaved into it to make it seem like something of substance bordered pathetic.

This is a summer blockbuster through and through. They didn't overcomplicate anything and they didn't try to shoehorn some super genius villain into the plot. There's a LOT of action, explosions and a few chuckles, but it doesn't devolve into some cringy cheese fest. There are some stupid holes in the script (queue SW:TFA-like "randomly crash-land on a planet right next to major plot device"), but it's not that glaring and the pace and tone of the movie can hide it for the most part.

My biggest gripe with it is that there is actually a bit too much action and some of these scenes drag on for so long that the movie fails to keep up the tension throughout. Then, when we finally get some exposition and dialog at the end I actually felt like we could have used a bit more of this in the middle as well.

Although new Star Trek movies were more of blockbusters than sci-fi old Star Trek series were, but this one is just simply bad. Transformers bad. Plot is nonexistent, it's just do something to show huge explosions and some over the top actions sequences.
Change characters and ship name and look, and there will be nothing else reminding you that this is Star Trek universe.
If you watched some of the series and you are familiar with Star Trek lore, you will be just furious at the end for how stupid everything went.

Previous movies were also action filled, but they maintained a lot of Star Trek feel. This movie is just action, explosions, stupid dialogs that are trying to be funny, and more explosions.

Furthermore 3D effects are very weak, and CGI is unimaginative, Just simulate explosions with huge amount of particles.

Everything feels just cheap. There are only few sets used over and over again. You can also fill some basic plot developing techniques like showing early some objects or places that will be used, destroyed or burned to the ground.

I can't believe that this movie was even brought to existence. There are so many good stories in the lore that could be reused, and they used something so basic and primitive.

Overall:
+ original cast,
+ Leonard Nimoy tribute,
+ few first minutes, when you still hope it will be a good movie,

- plot,
- everything else.

I am a big Star Trek fan. Not the kind that knows minutia like Gene Roddenberry's favorite ice cream flavor, but the kind the loves a space, a good story line, and some intelligent character development. Star Trek has always had that - until this film.

Overall, it felt very episodic. There is really nothing here except a lot of explosions and meaningless fighting. In fact, it hard almost cartoonish at one point. Like when Kirk was driving the motorcycle and was able to block everyone's bullets (or whatever it is). Boring.

When I look back at the previous film, they has a major character (Khan) who had a complex background and personality. Even when he won you felt for him. He was exciting, extremely intelligent, suspenseful, and help you on your toes. When there was an explosion, it was for a real reason that meant something to the viewer. As opposed to this film where one rock song all of the sudden blew up a giant army of space ships. I mean, are you serious?

I can watch this film a hundred times and still not understand why they did certain things. Except maybe because they're building out the franchise as episodes for people to come waste there money, go home, and come back in another few months to see more of the same. Not me.

There's less plot than there is hole, the writing is wooden and uninteresting, and the movie simply didn't feel Star Trek.

My greatest gripe is that if you replaced the words Star Trek with any other generic space action series you would lose nothing. There's nothing here that's brought in by being part of the Star Trek series, no sense of adventure or of the peace loving Federation we know. There's not a single alien entity in the movie that doesn't immediately attack the crew in a whirl of special effects and poorly shot action sequences, and because it retreats from the rest of the Star Trek series its nothing but boring action from start to finish.

I expected a lot from this movie, maybe a bit too much given its predecessor, but I was let down unbelievably by what I saw on screen here.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was kind of meh, it has spectacular special effect and lots of action but is completely lacking in an interesting story-line or any character development whatsoever. I am a huge fan of all the Star Trek TV series (Enterprise excepted) and this movie really does not have the feel of a Star Trek movie at all. This movie feels a lot more like Star Wars somewhere from Episode I-III or Post Episode VII since the character. Really, it's like they took any old action space movie and just threw a few of the Star Trek characters in just so they could ride on the Star Trek franchise name, this could have been any sci-fi action movie and maybe I'd like it more if it wasn't pretending to be a Star Trek movie. Therefore I give it an average rating, I didn't feel like I wasted my time but I didn't feel like I saw a Star Trek movie either.

Spoilers:

The initial battle scene where the Enterprise is utterly destroyed against a force which is so overpowering that fighting back is futile (no borg pun intended) is so over-the-top that it is really not believable that anyone could survive that sort of attack.

The parts where Spock is crying out in pain and especially the one where he is crying is an insult to the pre-reboot TV series and movies.

The only reason anything happens is because the script says so. The writing is weird and the acting isn't very good. It reuses the same elements of drama-additions that the first two movies use, and even if the movie was great it would still feel like a drag. The action is okay but since that and the visuals are what Lin focused on it feels like the action should be much better than it is. A lot of the action is visual but not actual fighting. There is, however, a lack of lens-flares, but I would have doubled the Abrams amount of them if it meant I'd get a good movie. Expand

Background: I have seen all of the previous twelve films except for Nemesis, which was a dud, I read. I do not particularly try to watch the many TV series and I am not a Trekkie.

Pros: There are some nice visual effects of the attack on the Enterprise.

Cons:
(1) The JJ Abrams-inspired new series of films have stunts that are getting less and less believable. Star Trek (2009) had some great stunts. Into Darkness had repeated some of the stunts and they felt a bit stale and less plausible. This film had gone in a slightly different direction, but its stunts had become too far-fetched.

(2) The plot, Jaylah, the villain and the doomsday device were poorly explained, the latter being a real MacGuffin.

(3) Two of the major locations in the film were, again, not believable, one being a planet that conveniently had breathable air and another being a space station that's so big that it would have cost an immeasurable amount of money to build. Think Death Star 2.

(4) Chris Pine actually looked bored in this film and pudgy, and I don't think it was acting. It was more likely due to an drinking problem, in real live.

Who would think the film is great? Young adults and kids.
Who would think the film is only so-so? Trekkies and older adults
Who would think the film is lousy? No one.

Rating: 3/5 (no half scores). Save your money and watch it on TV.

Another exciting Star Trek movie! I like it how it starts off with the credits (inlcuding Abrams Bad Robot), and the music in the background till the first scene. the movie doesn't disappoint. Lots of acton and humor.

Say what you will about the J.J. Abrams films, but at least they have the ability to keep it up. This is just ridiculously boring, what with the cookie cutter Macguffin plot and incomprehensible action. There are a few grace notes here that in the past would have caused me to be more generous with my rating, but this has been a dire blockbuster year, I miss stuff like Edge of Tomorrow, Ghost Protocol, and John Wick, and this film gives Zoe Saldana nothing to do. Generic just doesn't merit a mixed review at this point.
Oh, and RIP Anton Yelchin. I'll miss his marked competence in diverse roles, and his adorable Russian accent.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you've seen Mars Attacks you've seen this movie already. The first problem is the plot is so shallow as they jump right into action its literally like every other action movie these days. Literally 2 minutes in and you know the whole main story, 10 seconds later the video jumps and they are at the planet where the rest of the movie takes place no crew interaction or dialogue. Obviously there was a ambush (who could have guessed?) and the rest of the movie was just action scenes. At the end they all blow up from the music just like in mars attacks, and next to no reason was provided why music makes all the ships blow up while the star ship just rides the wave of enemy ships and they all just blow up from the music. Epic boss fight with action at the end and its not too much different from most other action/superhero movie these days with some extra star trek pandering/lore sprinkled in. Not what I expected from star trek. If you go in expecting a normal action movie then its OK. Expand

Ignoring Into Darkness and giving fans a film that pays tribute to the show staying true to the characters, tone, and spirit of the show. The dynamics between the characters are fun, the action is entertaining but never too off the rails, and there are some nice moments of tribute to the original show that will make Trekies tear up. It may not have the flash and spectacle of the last two being a smaller and slower story, which may be a turn off to the casual moviegoer, but to those who love the original series there couldn’t be a better way to celebrate 50 years of Trek. My childhood memories consist of watching the Star Trek series and the movies. In 2009, I was happy when J.J. Abrams rebooted the franchise in movie format. The first reboot, I liked. I loved the new characters. While the story was alright, I enjoyed the movie. Into Darkness was an alright movie, but I did not like them ripping off from Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan.

I love the fact that this movie has an original storyline, as well as elements from the Star Trek universe. I feel like, when J.J. Abrams was directing, that it was all about action and whatnot. Star Trek Beyond grasps what Star Trek was supposed to be like. The character development was fantastic. The Bones and Spock interaction was on point from what the original series was. The movie felt like a glorified two-part episode, which was fantastic. My girlfriend, while new to Star Trek, did not enjoy the first two reboots but she loved this movie. Go see it!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My wife and I both agreed that if we hadn't had one of our kids with us, we would have walked out. Considering we have been together for almost 30 years, seen hundreds of movies together (our first date was Rainman), and have NEVER walked out on a movie, that's saying something!
We grew up watching the orginal ST on a black and white TV. What made it special was the interaction of the crew members not the cheesy FX. Somewhere in all the remakes , that has gotten lost...
The premise of this film was flimsy from the outset. The filmakers just couldn't wait to get to the far end of the universe. Another cheap piece of plastic holds the key to a doomsday machine (G of the G anyone?). Wooden dialog, no subtext or subplots, no real winks or humor. Just lazy, color by numbers, industrial moviemaking likely to gross a billion dollars. Oh, and we paid a vig for 3D which was nonexistant. One word for that... Chutzpah!

Simon Pegg, being a true geek and sci-fi nut knows exactly how to please the fans and this film just keeps on giving and giving, never fizzling out and delivering a spectacular finale worthy of the franchise. More importantly, the movie is not Star Trek but rather Star Wars meets CGI for ADD. I am not getting the idea of the comments on movie threads that it is like a TV episode. Except for a good scene between McCoy and Spock, it lacked all things like a Star Trek episode. Many Star Wars fans liked it better than some Star Wars movies. I think that proved the popular point of the similarities of Star Wars fan and producer JJ Abrams' approach. I support my friends in the past and current Star Trek production universes, but I cannot in good conscience promote a movie as Star Trek that is not truly Star Trek. But, I encourage people who enjoy Star Wars style movies to go see it, and I hope they have a great time. Expand

By the end, you got this empty sense that the film had to hurry to address a lot of interpersonal plot development that it just never got to. Spock and Uhura spent 90% of the movie apart but we were supposed to feel some rich development in their relationship/break up. The villain appeared out of nowhere with technology that was given to explanation and monologued like every other villain in Abbrams' Trek films. I did love the chase scenes but the fact that they broadcast a song and their whole enemy fleet got taken out was ridiculous and wreaked of desperate "we gotta find a way for the good guys to win" logic. There was seemingly little rhyme or reason for the villain to become deranged and for his crew to unquestioningly follow. Finally, I couldn't understand how the woman who tricked the Enterprise into going to that planet to begin with pulled it off. If she was really part of Krall's crew, should there not have been traces that she has a human genome in there? Or do they just not run any scans on a strange species they've never seen and take her at her word that she needs help. "Let's send our flagship, unquestioningly into a dangerous nebula on a goose chase mission to save a small science ship from another species because this pink chick tells us to"... I dunno, they lost me there. Expand

For me it was a missing opportunity, I liked the other two reboots but not this one.
The movie has a predictable screenplay, you will foresee what will happen in every scene and what the dialogues will be.
Both main villain and co-protagonist have two dimensional personality, clichéd appearance and speaks only platitudes sentences.....consequently they both fail to inspire menace or sympathy.
If you are looking for an action movie you will be disappointed because the action is there (plenty of it) but is a little silly and not good enough to be the film's main course.
Sadly It's an unsatisfying film also if you want "Star Trek franchise" to be something more than a outer space action flick, with familiar characters tossed into a standard mix of pew pew, punches, jokes, bad language and scenes of cities going boom.
Special effect are of mixed quality: ships, planets are really great but aliens, suits and some weapons seems too fake.
A little part of the plot remind me of wing commander iv....in that game it worked really well but here not so much.

Star Trek Beyond,my verdict.well first the positive, the movie starts good,in a well thought way with the characters in central place kirk, bones beautiful scenery etc etc...that was okay, second plus were the good use of humor especially the Bones/Spock dynamic witch still works great and as a third plus there is the scene where these bee like weapons attack the enterprise, good action spectacle in a sci fi world but then...................................................................this movie turns into the dumbest, most illogical, childish peace of crap to ever come out of the star trek movie book!!!!this thing was exactly what that so very often criticised trailer represented,a space movie with a bad kick ass **** an ugly villan and the beasty boys music in space!!!oh did i mention kirk riding a motorcycle?Allright i can take an exaduration here and there,i can take a female sidekick to draw the puberty audience but these tottaly uninteresting characters were appaling. The villan Krall what was that?it looked like a cheap deep space 9 mask villan,i mean come on after people like Khan,or the incredible General Chang or the Borg Queen played by great actors really making a difference we get a good Actor in this rediculus cheap ugly villan B movie mask played by Idris Elba....what a waise of talent!then there is this star wars runaway character with the awfull paintings on her face jaylah what is her role?other than to be this kick ass female character she is so boring outside of 14year old kids who mabe like her i dont get what that has to do in a major big budget Star Trek movie, but maby is that just it,Major Star Trek movies just get dumber and dumber?when i first heard that Justin Lin was to direct the next Star Trek my stomach just turned over, are you really serious???????????Fast and furious does Star Trek, you know what i wanted to do watching this crap movie?i just wanted to cry because they just destroyed the one sacred thing in sci fi world to me,this epic idea from 1966 by Gene Roddenbery with this human hope for the future, relationships, morals special entitys meetings etc etc and they just killed that off with BEYOND!and if it could not get any worse the best is yet to come nearing the end of this movie it seemed that a beasty boys song would be the ultimate weapon against this highly advanced alien race........pardon me......are you really serious.....i mean what do they think we are?a bunch of idiots???This is by far and i mean that it is even worse than insurrection by far the worst thing i have ever seen in the Star Trek movie line up,it even is the worst movie i saw this year!!!!!!from the wrath of khan i saw every Star Trek in the theaters and allways more than once, just because i am such a fan, even into darkness with its serious story wholes i saw a few times as it had a certain charme and quality to it,but this tragedy i hope i will never have to see again in my life!!!sad so very sad, there are so many things i could keep on saying about it why it is so bad i could write a book about it!the death of Star Trek is called Beyond. First off, while it may not be as strong as it's predecessor Into Darkness, it manages to keep itself serious enough to tell a decent story while not being overbearingly grim. In a sense, tone-wise it's somewhere in the middle of it's two predecessors.
Pros: Once again the special effects of the movie are top-notch, no one will walk away saying the action sequences didn't look awesome. The gravity-bending near the end of the movie especially are very well done, and are almost as disorienting as it is to the characters. Acting-wise all the supporting characters are given a bit more screen-time and definitely make the most of it. McCoy and Spock's interactions are definitely a highlight as comedic relief, and I have to give a special nod to Chekov's development with Kirk. (Anton will be sorely missed).
Cons: Not every supporting character was quite as well done though, the character of Jaylah checks off every archetype of alien/kinda primal ally that has a grudge on said villain.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A movie bordering on greatness, but falling short. The CGI is PHENOMENAL, maybe he best I've ever seen. The acting is very good, and the script is quite good. The drawbacks are small but noticable; the villain is blah, the dialog for Scottie was not what one would expect from a Starfleet graduate (too much lassie and wee), and the motorcycle scene was too easy a way out. I guess it's about what you'd expect from a "Fast and Furious" director. Idris Alba could have been hsed so much more and so much better. Despite these short comings, the movie is thoroughly entertaining. The destruction of the Enterprise was well worth the price of admission alone! Expand

TheStar Trek Beyond expands on its storytelling by making it less about space and more about planetary adventure. Rather than focusing the story around Kirk and Spock it makes an effort to bring other members of the crew into the spotlight. The tone of the movie is also brighter compared to previous movies; even sometimes feeling similar to Guardians of the Galaxy.

The plot however is vague and a bit bland. The whole picture doesn't come into focus until late into the movie. The villain's motive and his development is ambiguous; I'd say the least interesting out of the three movies.

Also every found technology in the movie magically works to fit the protagonist's needs.
"Scotty can you make this work?"
"Of course! I'd just need to make some minor adjustments."
Interplanetary technology apparently is a simple matter.

Overall an enjoyable movie experience and a commendable change of direction compared to previous installments.

The action sequences, cinematography and choreography were all fine. Simon Pegg and co. did their best to continue channeling the characters which Nemoy, Shatner, Kelley et al. birthed back in the day. Whenever I watch one of these Kelvin Timeline films, though, I always feel like there is something missing ... like I am watching a film made by people who have never actually seen Star Trek. Think the prisoners in Plato's allegory of the cave, except in this case, director Justin Lin never managed to escape and view the reality that was behind those shadows dancing across the walls. I know some people enjoyed the scene with Beastie Boys blaring in the background, but when I compare this with an episode of TNG like The Inner Light, I'm forced to shed nerd tears. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What (according to the second trailer and the beginning of the movie) promised to be an unusual incisive character developing story and a movie with a dark feeling set in a vast Star Trek universe, turned out to be blunt and unthoughtfully action packed without any character depth.
Scotty said "lets hope this doesn't get messy". However, it did.

-----
-- Antagonist has no (clear) motives
-- Hardly any character development of crew members to last an entire (or another) movie
-- Hard to oversee action scenes (flipping of the saucer disk)
-- Another enterprise destroyed: death of countless crewmembers and destruction of the entire ship has totally no emotional resemblance anymore
-- messy, unclear and unconvincing storyline
-----

+++++
++ Producer JJ Abrams keeps inventing new visual effects, like the visually attracting warp bubble and the peculiar but interesting onboard camera looking at the Enterprise while it is shot away.
++ Architecture of the Yorktown starbase

Every character is given a chance to shine and is given more than enough character growth through out the film. Krall was an Ok villain but I don't think that his side of the story was told as well as it could have been. We were given some very quickly told sentences to explain things and that was that. Visually, It's a stunning film and even with a 2 hour run time, I didn't get bored watching it.

Hats off to Simon Pegg. He wrote a good film and I think that's the main reason everything clicked so well. It's a shame that they had to cut it to shreds in order to fit a more watch-able run time because I am sure it would have been even better if it were slightly longer.

Clunky, preachy, predictable dialogue/direction. '09 and '13 had great back stories, - the beginnings of the crew and Khan - clever dialogue and action not aimed to be the next Six Flags attraction. Story holes ? Lots and that's ok to some extent being it's sf. But....to get to the 'nebula' planet it was warp speed. So how did the bad guys all get to the Yorktown colony ?Kirk has a few drinks before hitting the bridge...not my kind of pilot. Motorcycle ? Enough Fast and Furious already. Among others. Cliche direction - Jayla actually 'pointedly points' when she explains where the bad guys are as if the crew could see where or what she was talking about...and they didn't look. Telegraphed set ups for quips took the punch out.
Simon Pegg is funny for sure with the right dialogue and timing - ie watch 'Paul' - hilarious- but as screenwriter it's a thumbs down. Doug Jung is the 'veteran' screenwriter and gets thumbs down.
Beyond gets nods for fx and a late but clever unfolding story line. The movie needed a deft touch and that's not Justin Lin. For all the action sequences Beyond weighed down by poor directing and dialogue.
Kept checking the time to see when we were getting to the end.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a long-time Trekkie, I have to say that the writers andJ.J. Abrams have destroyed the heart and soul of Star Trek The Original Series. Spock openly yells out in pain, laughter, etc. They disrespected the time-honored tradition of the characters and opted for costumes and special effects instead of halfway decent story.

In opening the story, Kirk accepts a mission that was senseless and pointless. Clearly, the Federation was being drawn into a trap and sacrificing its greatest asset on the word of an unknown alien.

Somehow McCoy end up having to join Spock in an escape pod wherein McCoy becomes the pilot. That's right - "I'm a doctor not a ...." actually comes up in the movie.

Mr. Spock is informed of some devastating news that he would never want to know about as a Vulcan. However, other Vulcans present him with this information in the beginning of the film. The relationship between Spock and Uhura is confounded because Spock all of the sudden wants Vulcan-only children. Did he not know this in the first film where they annihilated Vulcan? They had Spock as emotional in the film as a bride. Taking the cool, logic away from Spock is detrimental to the entire film.

Seeing Sulu with a family picture on his console was a homosexual agenda nod. His role in the film was, clearly to appease the LGBT community especially when he joined his daughter and man in the beginning of the film. The only reference to Sulu's sexuality in the Original Series was in "Mirror Mirror" where his character in an alternate universe, clearly, was heterosexual as he was after Lt. Uhura.

Lt. Uhura's role in this film was minimal. After being captured, she was standing warning the villain of the Federation.

The 3D special effects were mostly in the titles and closing credits and some other points with in the movie from time to time. Please do not think you will see top to bottom 3D like Avatar. Perhaps instead of forcing the 3D element, the writers could have looked at The Original Series and any films directed by Leonard Nimoy to gather inspirations.

Why continue to mess with a classic like Star Trek which included Science, Adventure, a bit of humor and great stories showing humanity clashing and working with aliens and one another? This formula has lasted 50 years!

This is a movie that takes what the first two were about being summer spectacles and mashes it into a dangerous search mission with our heroes separated and always in the midst of danger.

The USS Enterprise in nearly three years into its five-year voyage, and Captain James Kirk (Chris Pine) along with his crew arrive at Yorktown in order to replenish some dwindling supplies. We also see that Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana) have ended their relationship, Spock also receives some devastating news, and wonders whether or not he should continue his mission with the rest of the Enterprise.

The film's main enemy is Krall (Idris Elba), and he plans to bring the Enterprise down, which leaves many of the crew members separated and stranded onto Nebula. It is there that we see Spock stranded with Dr. Leonard McCoy (Karl Urban), Kirk with Chekov (the late Anton Yelchin), Scotty (Simon Pegg) encounters Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), and Uhura and Sulu (John Cho) are trapped with the evil Krall.

The crew members take their time to find each other and get back to their mission, but they struggle to find out where they all are, nor can they keep up with what Krall wants to do.

There is a lot to talk about, but without spoiling too much, what I can say is that this film is fun...even more so than its predecessor 'Star Trek Into Darkness' (2013), which was also fine, but for the most part, the ending towards that film seemed convenient and almost too easy. Director Justin Lin of 'Fast & Furious' (2009) does an impressive job of keeping the tone significant and consistent throughout, and the sometimes sharp screenplay by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung do provide some comic relief, but as is the case with its 2013 predecessor, sometimes the lines sound cheesy and unnatural.

When J.J. Abrams (who serves as this film's producer) rebooted the franchise in 2009, it was a strong start for a new generation of fans to get invested with these characters and their missions, then in 2013, what we had was a rather middling adventure that ended too conveniently as I mentioned above. This is a solid installment to the franchise, but after the first two acts, it does lose some momentum as it feels as if the mission takes its time to actually get complete.

Idris Elba is fine as Krall, and plays him with such intimidation, but overall, he is forgettable. You will find yourself getting mostly invested with Sofia Boutella's character, Jaylah, who proves to be something exciting for this franchise's future sequels (if they are to come).

Overall, this is an enjoyable summer flick, better than its predecessor, but not as strong as its first installment. "Star Trek" fans in general should be happy with what Justin Lin has done.

I liked the acting and the fact that we can see a few original Star Trek characters. Some people say that plot is bad and I have to admit it's not perfect but the scriptwriters definitely did a good job. The thing I liked the most is the fact that you don't know what will happen next compared to the Warcraft movie, in which you can easily predict the future of the characters, the consequences and the whole plot of the movie.
So, all in all, you shouldn't listen to the haters as the film IS exciting and IS worth watching.

The interaction between the characters holds up the terse comic style that's kept relationships so enjoyable. There are the expected cool efx, amazing environments and neat creature makeup. This movie has more pacing, a random contained plot with little reference to prior films and shows an aging crew with more complicated dynamics and a more mature perspective.

I would love to see more sci-fi film's hearkening to some of the earlier heydays of sci-fi where slow meandering plots were the name of the game.

Somehow this paints a more true to life image.

Still this film has plenty of pulse-pounding moments as you can't escape over 30 years of film making. They of course only add to the film making this an enjoyable blend of original and modern.

It had good action scenes at times, but mostly the type of stunts you'd see in fast and furious not in a star trek movie. This is the problem with this... I am a Star Trek fan and you know what? I watched those shows to satisfy my interest in the unknown - the galaxy. Every episode was a new experience, they had to discover it and figure out what was going on and why and really break down how to fix the problem. This movie - "We're sliding down the ship weeeeee! Yes it's half exploding! Yes there's jagged metal things everywhere and a normal human would die when landing after this but weeeeee!"
This is not Star Trek. Star Trek is coming across the unknown, or trying investigate what a potential hostile species is up to. It's about the crew, working together, to discover information that might help them solve the problem ahead. It's slow, methodical. This is fast, furious, and cars in space.

*SPOILERS* When they show his video of him talking about how he's going to get revenge, he says he only has a couple crew members left.... then where did he get this army of 10,000 flying space marines who's helmets never come off? If he can make 10,000 ships then why is his infrastructure looking like a homeless person on a mountain? It's one of those self-fullfilling stories where everything is convenient and in place so the story moves along regardless of how absurd it is that they are so PERFECT at everything they do. Star Trek was methodical, slow and thought provoking. None of this was in this film.

Hasn't A Game of Thrones taught anyone about movies/shows/entertainment?! Ground your show in a bit of reality, make the people human not gods, and you'll get a better involvement from the audience.

Ah! Director Justin Lin and writer Simon Pegg breathe new life into the reboot series that JJ Abrams and Bob Orci nearly killed in the water. What an improvement over the plot-hole ridden, willfully stupid "Into Darkness"!

This is the first film of the "Star Trek" reboot that really seems like it gives two craps about the traditions of the franchise instead of rehashing them to pander to the audience, and it also happens to have a decent and not overly complex story, a ton of action, very good interplay between the iconic characters, and the old-fashioned pulpy adventure feel of the original series.

Unlike the ponderous rehash-riddled plot of "Into Darkness" or the over-the-top retconned AU fanfic origin story of the 2009 "Trek", this one drops the audience into a self-contained story right in the middle of the five-year mission and is all the better for it. Characters like Bones and Spock feel like they already have history, and the writing for them is especially on point, something that can't be said about "Into Darkness".

The action was silly and fun. The villain was interesting. The alien tech on display is also quite awesome. It truly seems like everyone was having a good time making this and I felt it was very entertaining. Even though at times the plot was predictable, no one thing took me out of the film and the performances alone were totally transporting. I can't say enough about how much more I enjoyed this than the ridiculous first two films in this reboot series. It really feels like this reboot has finally found its groove and I hope they keep it up for the recently-announced fourth film.

Star Trek Beyond (Spoiler Alert)

I waited in anticipation for this film. I was the first person in the theater on Friday morning. As a fanfiction writer, I was looking to see how closely the plots of my Krall stories measured up to actual plot of the film. I was surprised by the outcome. Mine are much better.
J.J. Abrams, creator of Fringe, director of Star Trek Beyond and Star Wars decided to step aside for this film. Instead, they selected Justin Lin as the director. As you all probably know, Lin has directed the Fast and Furious franchise for several years. Therein lies the first problem with this film. It is no longer a science fiction franchise. It is now an action film franchise, replete with motorcycle chases, fighting scenes and a constant barrage of phaser fire.
Without revealing the plot, which was threadbare, it would be sufficient to say it was like eating a bowl of stone soup. Kirk is bored with his role of captain and after only three years as a captain, with no Starfleet degree, he applies for a job as a vice-admiral. He seemed to feel that the job was unchallenging, yet throughout the film he constantly announces that he would be nothing without Spock. This leads us to the next shortcoming of the film, the triad.
Star Trek fanboys whined like babies who had been pulled from their momma’s teets when Uhura replaced McCoy as one of the lead characters in the first two films. The Star Trek powers finally relented and attempted to recreate the “bromance” between these fellas, but they failed. The truth is, it cannot be done on film. The relationship between Kirk, Bones and Spock developed over three seasons as the actors worked closely together. The relationships between these three characters in the film seemed inauthentic. Kirk is in love with Kirk, which is not too far from case in the television version and although there is banter between Spock and McCoy throughout the film, the chemistry that existed in the television show just doesn’t exist between Karl Urban and Zachary Quinto.
This leads us to the third misfire in the film. It is a rehash of the Star Trek 2009. We get to see the same stunts, over again and this time there are no surprises, falling ships rising, Kirk floating in space, fancy transporter tricks and most disappointing, the amber effect from the Abram’s TV series Fringe. I found myself falling asleep halfway through the film.
What they did right was add a bit more content about the female characters. Uhura and Jayla kick butt and take names. There is also a low level female villain and the last minute addition of Shohreh Aghdashloo as Commodore Paris which contributes little to the plot. It comes across as tokenism. One is left wondering if she was related to Lieutenant Tom Paris and his father Admiral Paris from the Voyager show, or if Pegg just couldn’t think of any other names.
I hear that there is another Star Trek in the works. The best thing Paramount can do is wrench this franchise from the hands of J.J. Abrams and Roberto Orci and hire some DS9 and Voyager writers. They, at least, are familiar with the Star Trek canon. The other thing they can do to save the franchise is to stop courting the video game crowd, who prefer Star Wars anyway, and put the science fiction back into the Star trek franchise.

Star Trek Beyond may not be the best space voyage for many, but it's a great summer film if you're only looking for a fun silly time at the movies.

The energy, the character's and the bold scope are the things that makes Beyond watchable. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the cast are all fantastic in the roles. And this actually feels like an actual Star Trek movie and not a full on remake like "Into Darkness" was. All thanks to Justin Lin.

If only the editing and the villain was improved then this would have gotten a stronger rating. I didn't think the villain was terrible or anything like that, but it was a waste of Idris Elba. I mean, yeah his motivations are relieved at the climax of what he's trying to do and it kinda makes sense. The villain himself wasn't that interesting to me.

Overall rating: Star Trek Beyond is right up there with "X-Men: Apocalypse" as the most fun I had at the cinema. While I liked the first movie a lot more, I still think this a solid third entry to this new franchise.

Rest in piece Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin. Live long and prosper.

By comparison the 2009 reboot is a classic. So much more thought went into Abrams' effort. Also, whoever wrote that 'Beyond' is like TOS hasn't seen TOS. The positive reviews MUST be bought and paid for.

The good: Sofia Boutella, the guest actress, was one of the few good things about this movie consistently and, even better, it appears they are setting her up to become a member of the crew, which would be great as she has more attitude and life in her than most of the other actors. Another good thing: the opening few minutes, which were funny and well done; and the final scene, Kirk's birthday party, where the characters finally showed their personality and had some dialogue beyond yelling for help or saying 'hang on!' or 'over there! behind you!' Ok, I don't know if they said those things in the movie exactly but almost the entire film used only short choppy action scene dialogue about where to go and what to do next in order to escape trouble or get the bad guy. But in the last scene the actors showed a lot more color and personality, finally, for a few minutes before the credits.

The bad: the plot. In the next few sentences I reveal minor plot basics, probably no more than professional reviews. A bad guy once again wants to destroy the Federation for vague reasons he cannot quite articulate - something about having been a soldier and now feeling useless because there is peace in the galaxy (it's news to me that there's peace in the Star Trek universe but whatever), and also feeling abandoned when he was left behind by people in Star Fleet a hundred years earlier (he's discovered the secret to some sort of life extension, you see, which was vaguely explained in five seconds). He has also changed his form completely, which is also unexplained but I suspect he did it by putting on an alien costume left over from the show Star Trek Enterprise, and he is going to take out as much of Starfleet as he can with a super weapon he can now use thanks to the fact that he has found some alien artifact he needs to make it work. You can't really give a spoiler because there's nothing to spoil. What I just told you is about the level of detail the movie gives. He sets this stone artifact in place like Indiana Jones, but instead of opening a door to treasure it powers up a weapon. No explanation as to why this weapon exists or its origins is even attempted. It's just some bs they threw together so they could trigger nonstop action which continues uninterrupted for almost the entire movie. Without room to breathe the movie just goes from one set piece to another, using closeups almost exclusively, so that often you don't know exactly where people are; and when they show one person running then cut to another, you don't know where those two are in relation to each other and if one is chasing the other and if so, which one; and when people are running through exploding ships I sometimes had no idea what was going on the visuals were such a busy mess. Whoever is in charge of maintaining the clarity of what is happening physically on screen utterly failed with this movie. Perhaps most importantly, the way they finally defeated the bad guys made no sense at all. I would tell you so you can understand how ridiculous it was, but I don't want to spoil it. Though it's crap so I'm not sure that you'd care anyway.

Zachary Quinto gained a little weight in the face so he no longer has the angular Spock look. He looks puffy like the face of Darth Vader when Luke finally removed the mask (OK that's an exaggeration but he was puffy). Chris Pine starts off a little heavy in the face but quickly loses it. He apparently lost several pounds during filming. I'm sorry but I paid $12 to see Bruce Springsteen perform for 3 and half hours in 1978, an incredible classic performance. So if I'm going to pay over twice that much merely to see a 2 hour movie (3D iMax), then the script better be great, the visuals better be great, the acting better be great, and the actors better be fit and trim and look their best. If the actors can't get in shape for all the millions they are paid, then they have an entitlement problem. Zachary wasn't ready to shoot. Chris wasn't but he fixed it fast during filming. Zoe Saldana, who I love and think is beautiful, looks so severe throughout almost the entire movie (until the Kirk birthday scene when finally she looks like herself again) that she was unpleasant to watch. Mostly she just stared at things severely. They gave her little to do. Maybe she was still channeling Nina Simone and hadn't broken out of that character fully. The best of the regular cast this time around was Bones, who was great. Though there vulgar dialogue that was a bit jarring to hear in Star Trek, jokes about horse sh!t. Like a Farley brothers movie briefly invading a couple of times. It was weird. Overall, a paint-by-numbers action movie, vague and poorly shot or maybe just poorly edited action. Not much spirit of Star Trek to be found.

One of the worst and most disappointing movies ever! There were red herrings. The first trailer was notoriously bad and the Scotsmen co wrote it himself. JJ better direct the next one or else we are all doomed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film reads like an episode of the original series, except longer and with the bigger budget. Overall the acting is excellent though the story is quite weak and pandering to the lowest denominator. We have a series of scenes that build to an obvious and unoriginal ending. The tone of the film is also quite bland as Kirk opens the film saying he hates the episodic nature of the Enterprises missions, ironically this is what the movie becomes. The loss of Anton Yelchin also weighed on me while watching, such a bright young star. Overall the film is well made, but suffers from being nothing more than a predictable and obvious chapter in the franchise. Expand

Star Trek might go a bit too beyond from its original formula -- but it works with a more up-to-date balance between action, and the much improved character depth.

Star Trek was originally a show that explored the basics of morality. Complex dilemmas between cultures, religions & conflicts – even to basic questions regarding social norms and life itself. We might not have gotten that much of it in this, nor the previous two flicks – but it paid a massive respect to its roots and its legacy (it’s the shows 50th anniversary). It’s finally (somewhat) a movie for “trekkies”. ‘Star Trek Beyond’ goes much deeper into the crew than its predecessors. It’s a very fast-paced flick, but it simultaneously catches the splendid character moments. It’s a masterful balance! The film establishes the story one piece at a time, and it’s not fully understandable until in the final act. It’s the antagonist and his motivations that’s not shared until in the final sight. The visualization of the main villain “Krall” is very good – when finally understanding his motivations – which takes a while to know (some out there might even because of that, stay annoyed throughout the whole film). But the well hidden twist that awaits, is worthy a wait!

The basic premise of this film lies much more on characters than the plot itself. Splendid chemistry is a gigantic plus, but the plot could have been much more passionate. There could have been a more want-to to the plot, especially to the climax. To succeed against the villain, and the motivations behind it could have been much greater. Give it more emotion! A more personal conflict! More drama! Not just action and the “several million people could die if the villain will succeed-cliché”. The story also got some convenient events that just felt off – just so the plot can develop. The change in direction could be one miss shoot – but the film really shines with its renewed energy! It’s definitely the most action-packed ST-film to date! It’s way more playful than its predecessors, and the focus lies massively on quantity rather than J.J’s quality. On a personal level did ‘Star Trek Beyond’ feel a bit too uneventful for my taste, even though that there are some really big character moments. Yes, the action did work – but in the end I wasn’t that satisfied. There are some really inventive and intense action-pieces, meanwhile others are “meh” – especially the hand-to-hand combat. But I still adore this film – with its energy & fascinating characters. Yes, even more chemistry & character depth to smaller as big characters could have made this film even greater – including less expositions and much more humor! This film surpassed my expectations, because the trailers did show something that simply wasn’t this film. It might not surpass when it comes to story, but it does with characters!

This is not old Star Trek. -5
This is better than Nu Trek +1
This incorporates aspects from many of the series +1
Backstories make sense and are related to Enterprise +1
There is a weak philosophical point, but not enough for a point.

On the one hand it's recycled rehash with no spark of originality much less intelligence. On the other, if you haven't seen it all before you would be baffled by this insider reboot-sequel. Either way, it's very thin. The only thing it's beyond is boring!
Put it this way, I might even take the very first Star Trek movie from 1979 over this, because as dreadfully boring as that non-eventful debut was, it at least had a true sci-fi gothic space opera realism to it. This thing is wall to walk cartoon action, and as I've warned so many times - non-stop over-the-top action is every bit as boring as no action!
The visual effects are the best part, but at this stage in cinematic history great VFX is a given. That said, there are some clunky shots in this!
The director is a mechanic for hire veteran of the laughably awful, silly "Fast and Furious" series. Obviously he can manage a set and technically understands "moviemaking", however he is not a gifted storyteller nor what a real director is, or at least used to be since the studio monkeys hire a lot of these types to helm their tent poles and otherwise now. We don't need more dime a dozen technicians Hollywood, we need those better at story craft!
The previous two JJ Abrams directed entries were good (both 8 ratings here), with the first being a true origin story prequel, and the second being a sequel/remake with twist which turned off most and infuriated some old fans. For some reason I went with it. Without really giving anything away, we can expect whales in the next entry because it's clear they are remaking the original movie series film by film while spinning it to something they are selling as new. Yeah, right. Well the house of mirrors aspect isn't the problem, it's the lack of involving story here that is. JJ the executive producer now gets sloppy with the property. Besides the weak story he stupidly goes without the anamorphic flare aesthetic established in the previous two. Why? Your wife told you to lose them? Put on a pair of pants pc leftist p---y! Criticisms in general of the flares being overdone? So maybe scale it back a bit, but don't lose that aesthetic altogether! Now this one doesn't match! Besides, the flares were fine and a great new visual motif that fit this futuristic content perfectly. If he had done it for "Star Wars" too, that would have been a terrible mistake of course. Here it's fine. Stand your ground wimpy nerd!
Lastly, a word on the cast. All three principles are doing impersonations. That's not good acting! Imagine if Daniel Craig or his predecessors did impressions of Sean Connery? Chris Pine is a solid actor with a look for sure, but he is no Bill Shatner and he never will be. Not even close, because one thing true stars have is personality. Say what you will about Shatner, but he became a big star because he's a true original and has personality galore. He also has proven to be a very fine actor many times out, granted not always. What sets Pine apart from dozens of good looking capable young Hollywood actors who could just as easily slip into this role? Not much.

Just like a TOS episode. Pays homage to what comes before it An intellectual Trek mixed with big action. Justin Lin fill the shoes nicely that Abrams Kelvin time-line created.

I liked Star Trek 09 (7/10), but I wasn't a fan of Into Darkness (5/10). I had high hopes that a more competent writer like Pegg would steer the series in the right direction. To my horror, the first trailer for Star Trek:Beyond made it seem like they were completely destroying the series, making it STAR TREK PRESENTED BY: MOUNTAIN DEW CODE RED. Subsequent trailers and interviews eased my anxiety so I went into this movie last night with an open mind. And WOW this is one of the better modern Star Trek films that I've seen!

It had the perfect blend of the old star trek "exploration" and "philosophy" mixed with great action and amazing visual effects. There was actual character development this time around, but I feel like the writing hindered some of the characters from reaching their true potential. Still, the stories that were presented are passable for a summer flick. They also made big references to the Star Trek: Enterprise and TOS shows, so that was really awesome. Lastly to my biggest surprise, the Beastie Boys scene that caused me so much cringe in the first trailer gave me the biggest smile in the theater! I'm actually surprised they pulled it off so well.

All in all I'd say this deserves a 8/10. Much better than Into Darkness, about on par with Star Trek 09, but with more emphasis on the story and less lens flair. It was as close to a Mass Effect movie as I'll ever get, so if you're a fan of that series I think you'll like this.

The film's overreliance on over-the-top action sequences to the detriment of meaningful substance and profound character development leaves one feeling terribly unsatisfied, longing for more from this mythic sci-fi series. Even though "Star Trek" has been going in a somewhat more adventure-oriented direction in its latest offerings, it's gone too far this time, scrapping what has traditionally made it work so effectively in favor of cheap pyrotechnic theatrics and fight scenes. Wait for the DVD. Expand

Good action, fairly boiler-plate plot, mediocre script. The most glaring issue was the awful editing, and I mean BvS bad. Lines that weren't audible or trampled over by a quick cut, unnecessary scenes spliced in that added nothing, or fast-paced cuts that obscure the action. Every major blockbuster of 2016 has featured this slap-dash editing, and it defies all reason. You've already shelled out hundreds of millions to get the stars and effects on screen, why not spend at least a little time making sure that the movie is watchable? Expand
