It's not like I'm a big fan of 'Star Wars', so I disliked it. I have seen many space adventure films, but I never felt this series so interesting. I enjoyed some of the 'Star Trek' films though. I knowWhen theirs rescue mission failed...

It's not like I'm a big fan of 'Star Wars', so I disliked it. I have seen many space adventure films, but I never felt this series so interesting. I enjoyed some of the 'Star Trek' films though. I know this sequel is not good the previous ones, but for me this look okay than those. Because it was so simple, particularly story wise, and the rest of the film was action and adventure.

No offense, but this series is like the collection of the rejections from other franchises. I mean, look at the cast, most of them are comedians and some of them are the category two actors and the rest are, I don't know what they are, bur decent actors. But these films pulled off successfully at the box office. Not a big impact like the recent 'Star Wars' film or any Marvel's films, but quite an impressive figure knowing the above fact I stated.

From the Taiwanese director who made four 'Fast and Furious' films, handled his best for this. This film tells the story of the captain James Kirk, who leads his ship and crew to a rescue mission to a distant planet where some alien race who had stranded. But when they reach their destination, an unknown space army takes them by surprise and they too take a refuse on the same planet. From there how they plan to escape and to learn who were those attackers, all comes in the next half.

This id full of action adventure. The story was little, but quite neatly developed characters, I mean the new ones with some good stunt sequences. As usual, there's no complaint about the graphics. I mean for the casual viewing, but who knows if you carefully look for the flaws, you might get a few. I suggest you to watch it just for an entertainment, but it might fail to satisfy the die-hard fans of 'Star Trek'. I think overall, it is not a bad film, even the two hours long is not an issue due to the good pace. 7/10… Expand

Not your usual space adventure. Kirk, Spock, the crew have new thoughts about life and their purpose after the initial glow of "going where no man has gone before" wears off. Star Trek Beyond lacks the emotional heft of the first film and isn't as powerful as the second but as a summer flick, delivers with an entertaining old-school adventure that honours the Star Trek brand along with great visuals and plenty of action.

To begin with, just so you know where I'm coming from, I loved 2009's Star Trek. After seeing it, I was incredibly optimistic about the future of this franchise. Into Darkness nearly dashed that optimism. I've seen it a couple of times, and ITo begin with, just so you know where I'm coming from, I loved 2009's Star Trek. After seeing it, I was incredibly optimistic about the future of this franchise. Into Darkness nearly dashed that optimism. I've seen it a couple of times, and I just can't get into it. So, I was very reserved going into Star Trek Beyond. I'd seen only one of the trailers, and no other promotional material. I had no real expectations for it.

Star Trek Beyond is actually quite entertaining. The movie moves at a good pace, and I didn't feel like it got bogged down at any point. In fact, I wouldn't have minded if they slowed down and developed their new characters a bit. Krall never quite rises above "generic villain" status, and even Jayla, who plays well off the rest of the cast, isn't a very complex.

The returning cast are all very fun to watch. They have great on-screen chemistry, though they tend to blend together a bit. For most of the film, you could easily swap out one for another in a scene. They don't play as very unique individuals. Some of their individual arcs - where we see them struggle with who they are or what they want - are too briefly addressed to make an impact.

The action and effects were great. There were so many thrilling sequences. They didn't always make a ton of sense, but they were incredibly fun to watch. I will say, though, that there's one alien race which is entirely CG, and it's very jarring. Practical creature effects would have been better.

Overall, it was an enjoyable film. It didn't reach nearly the heights that it was capable of, but as summer blockbusters go, it was well worth seeing it in cinemas.… Expand

I didn't know that another star trek was coming until I saw a trailer of it around 3 months ago. This one, just like what the others said, was definitely not good enough to outbeat its prequels. But there were still some good plots in it andI didn't know that another star trek was coming until I saw a trailer of it around 3 months ago. This one, just like what the others said, was definitely not good enough to outbeat its prequels. But there were still some good plots in it and so it deserved what it deserved. I was disappointed AND suprised that this sequel didn't have an emotional scene between the two Kirk/Spock unlike the first 2. These scenes was really what that hooked me into the series.… Expand

I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. I liked Star Trek 09 (7/10), but I wasn't a fan of Into Darkness (5/10). To my horror, the first trailer for Star Trek:Beyond made it seem like they were completely destroying the series, making it STAR TREK PRESENTED BY: MOUNTAIN DEW CODE RED. Subsequent trailers and interviews eased my anxiety so I went into this movie last night with an open mind. And WOW this is one of the better modern Star Trek films that I've seen!

It had the perfect blend of the old star trek "exploration" and "philosophy" mixed with great action and amazing visual effects. There was actual character development this time around, but I feel like the writing hindered some of the characters from reaching their true potential. Still, the stories that were presented are passable for a summer flick. They also made big references to the Star Trek: Enterprise and TOS shows, so that was really awesome. Lastly to my biggest surprise, the Beastie Boys scene that caused me so much cringe in the first trailer gave me the biggest smile in the theater! I'm actually surprised they pulled it off so well.

All in all I'd say this deserves a 8/10. Much better than Into Darkness, about on par with Star Trek 09, but with more emphasis on the story and less lens flair. It was as close to a Mass Effect movie as I'll ever get, so if you're a fan of that series I think you'll like this.… Expand

I was as much a skeptic as anyone, but the switch to Justin Lin as director has produced the most enjoyable of the rebooted Star Trek movies. Granted, it still isn't high art, but if you go in for a popcorn movie and take anything else youI was as much a skeptic as anyone, but the switch to Justin Lin as director has produced the most enjoyable of the rebooted Star Trek movies. Granted, it still isn't high art, but if you go in for a popcorn movie and take anything else you get out of it as a bonus, you'll be happy.

More interestingly, it may also be the Star Trek-iest of the new movies. Beyond the references to the original cast and the series they inhabited, the script also bears obvious similarities to elements of Generations and First Contact and even Insurrection. The pace of editing has dropped out of warp enough to have some shots of what old-school fans would call "spaceship porn", and Michael Giacchino, while he's no Jerry Goldsmith, clearly is attempting to channel him with some of the action cues.

The plot is apt enough, and conveys a sense of exploration and general goodwill (rather than one feeling like Starfleet is a miltary organization). I liked it on some levels, but felt it needed some more rewrites. It has its moments, but the villain and his conflict never really has enough weight or meaning, and some of the dialogue was rather utilitarian and in need of a dose of poetry.

The action, however, isn't in need of much else at all. It's as pretty and modern as JJ Abrams Trek was, but more intelligible, engaging, and with less lens flares. The inherent drawbacks one now expects from the reboots; the kitsch of the original series and a certain sense of cheapness that comes with excessive CGI, and it lacks the seriousness and weight that a few of the best bits of Star Trek carry. But honestly, this movie is as good as or better than many of its cinematic predecessors, and for a film that was picked by some to damage the franchise, I don't think it will.… Expand

Wow. That is perhaps all you need to say after seeing this film because of how well it was truly handled. That is perhaps all you need to say after seeing this film because of how well it was truly handled. I was worried by the director Justin Lin going to carry this Star Trek into a direction that wouldn't gel well with this reboot universe but I actually believe he handled the reigns almost better than JJ Abrams. This film does something that the previous Star Treks didn't seem to do, callbacks to the original series. Comedy is more of the focus of this film but not in the way that is much in the way of jokes but playing off the banter of the crew along with clever and enjoyably goofy scenes. The performances of the reboot crew is as strong as ever for I got the feeling that I was watching an extended episode of the original series in a good way. The special effects are as strong as ever for scenes of destruction have impact and fun. The only major complaints that I have at the film is the villain is a weak one complemented by his explanation and backstory and that one character's tragedy and how you think it is going to resolve doesn't even come through and feels pointless to throw into the story. Honestly this film more deserves an 8.5/10 but Metacritic doesn't allow half points but all and all this film is certainly worth seeing even more than one time and is in my consideration of top ten films of the year… Expand

Live long and prosper indeed! This is a thoroughly enjoyable film which is much truer to the spirit of the original series than previous films, probably due to the influence of Pegg's considered and, at times hilarious, script. The energy, the character's and the bold scope are the things that makes Beyond watchable. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the cast are all fantastic in the roles. And this actually feels like an actual Star Trek movie and not a full on remake like "Into Darkness" was. All thanks to Justin Lin.

If only the editing and the villain was improved then this would have gotten a stronger rating. I didn't think the villain was terrible or anything like that, but it was a waste of Idris Elba. I mean, yeah his motivations are relieved at the climax of what he's trying to do and it kinda makes sense. The villain himself wasn't that interesting to me.

Overall rating: Star Trek Beyond is right up there with "X-Men: Apocalypse" as the most fun I had at the cinema. While I liked the first movie a lot more, I still think this a solid third entry to this new franchise.

Rest in piece Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin. Live long and prosper.… Expand

But this one actually makes sense for the most part, has a villain that isn't trash, and actually has funny jokes. Bones in particular is hilarious. The film also pays respect to the original trekkies which was nice. Unlike that last movie which got Khan all wrong... Ugh.... Anyways believe it or not this new one did a good job for the most part. Easily a 7/8/9 out of 10. I never give 10's because there is no such thing as a perfect film but this one is still worth the money to go see in theaters.

Letting Simon Pegg write instead of that hack David lindolhoff or however the heck you spell his stupid name made a huge difference obviously lol.

Clearly Abrams focused more on star wars than he did with into fartness. The changes of developers behind beyond was for the best and it worked out pretty good. This was totally better than the last one. You can't really hate this film. It's a good star trek film.

Bonus... The new characters added to the cast are VERY good in this film. Best part of the movie honestly.… Expand

Even so I did have one major epiphany - In an era where we are on the cusp of general availability of self driving cars - who would put a human in charge of "flying" a spaceship. What human could calculate thrust levels relative to structural integrity much less make the kind of microsecond adjustment needed to maneuver like a hot rod in atmosphere. Humans will interface with computers to drive cars in 30 years - they will not perform the actual maneuvering of a space ship in 300 years. In fact my question became - what will a deep space probe actually look like in 300 years. Will it be more machine and wet-ware in a form of cyber-synth without any legacy human element?

But for the early 21st Century it did provide 2 hours of mindless entertainment. So it gets a 7.… Expand

A fun movie for a hot day. No it was not as good as many of the previous Star Trek films I’ve seen, but it was not terrible either. I did keep thinking, though, that many of these actors must have long term contracts, since they seemed just aA fun movie for a hot day. I did keep thinking, though, that many of these actors must have long term contracts, since they seemed just a little bored, especially Chris Pine. This comment does not apply to Simon Pegg, but he may have had a bigger stake in the game since he also worked on the script. Best of all, though, was Sofia Boutella as Jaylah, and I wondered why Krall had so much energy and was so interesting, until I realized it was the great Idris Elba. I pined for the old cast, none of whom were as lithe and slick as the younger generation, but all of whom had more humanity and personality. Still, there was plenty of action to keep me awake and I enjoyed myself.… Expand

I've never seen any Star Trek movies or TV series before and I can't say if it's good/bad compared to other films but as for me this thing is quite good. Some people say that plot is bad and I have to admit it's not perfect but the scriptwriters definitely did a good job. The thing I liked the most is the fact that you don't know what will happen next compared to the Warcraft movie, in which you can easily predict the future of the characters, the consequences and the whole plot of the movie.
So, all in all, you shouldn't listen to the haters as the film IS exciting and IS worth watching.… Expand

This is a movie that takes what the first two were about being summer spectacles and mashes it into a dangerous search mission with our heroes separated and always in the midst of danger.

The USS Enterprise in nearly three years into its five-year voyage, and Captain James Kirk (Chris Pine) along with his crew arrive at Yorktown in order to replenish some dwindling supplies. We also see that Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana) have ended their relationship, Spock also receives some devastating news, and wonders whether or not he should continue his mission with the rest of the Enterprise.

The film's main enemy is Krall (Idris Elba), and he plans to bring the Enterprise down, which leaves many of the crew members separated and stranded onto Nebula. It is there that we see Spock stranded with Dr. Leonard McCoy (Karl Urban), Kirk with Chekov (the late Anton Yelchin), Scotty (Simon Pegg) encounters Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), and Uhura and Sulu (John Cho) are trapped with the evil Krall.

The crew members take their time to find each other and get back to their mission, but they struggle to find out where they all are, nor can they keep up with what Krall wants to do.

There is a lot to talk about, but without spoiling too much, what I can say is that this film is fun...even more so than its predecessor 'Star Trek Into Darkness' (2013), which was also fine, but for the most part, the ending towards that film seemed convenient and almost too easy. Director Justin Lin of 'Fast & Furious' (2009) does an impressive job of keeping the tone significant and consistent throughout, and the sometimes sharp screenplay by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung do provide some comic relief, but as is the case with its 2013 predecessor, sometimes the lines sound cheesy and unnatural.

When J.J. Abrams (who serves as this film's producer) rebooted the franchise in 2009, it was a strong start for a new generation of fans to get invested with these characters and their missions, then in 2013, what we had was a rather middling adventure that ended too conveniently as I mentioned above. This is a solid installment to the franchise, but after the first two acts, it does lose some momentum as it feels as if the mission takes its time to actually get complete.

Idris Elba is fine as Krall, and plays him with such intimidation, but overall, he is forgettable. You will find yourself getting mostly invested with Sofia Boutella's character, Jaylah, who proves to be something exciting for this franchise's future sequels (if they are to come).

Overall, this is an enjoyable summer flick, better than its predecessor, but not as strong as its first installment. "Star Trek" fans in general should be happy with what Justin Lin has done.… Expand

I personally thought Star Trek Beyond is just as good as the previous two. Yes it feels a bit different this time round, but it's just as exciting. Given the last two movies focused on developing the characters, Star Trek Beyond could (and did) afford to focus more on the action and the movie plot itself. And this, Justin Lin did. I reckon if Justin Lin continues to direct Star Trek movies, he could take it to the lengths his Fast & Furious have gone - mindblowingly epic and action-packed. Well worth it and I'd certainly get the Blu Ray when it comes out. I love how the new Star Trek movies are all turning out to be - epic.… Expand

I wasn't initially going to watch this movie. I thought that the trailers sucked, but then I realized that I enjoyed the first two film, and decided to watch this one. This film is fun. I'm not sure that Krall's character was fully developed since he starts out as a villain and ends up more like a vengeful, tragic figure. Sofia Boutella needed to be a far more central character. Star Trek Beyond was my first movie Star Trek franchise. I was sceptical about it, since it was something weird to me. But when I went to the cinema, I realized that it was a lot like Star Wars. But when I went to the cinema, I realized that it was a lot like Star Wars. Seriously, if you haven't ever watched Star Trek, you will think: "Yeah, it's definitely a lot like SW". But in fact there are a few similar things. Star Trek features a great experience, awesome special effects, splendid actors (missing you, Anton), and an usual plot. Why "usual"? Well, in my opinion, there was not anything special, but generally I liked the first part of the movie: it was much-much better, believe me. The second one was about destroying, killing, fighting, etc. But the first one was about relations between characters. A masterpiece that not only used source material properly from shows like Enterprise and TOS, but also gave the feeling of an actual Star Trek experience! The action was not just flashy and explosions, it was used very well to advance the plot. My favorite part was the callbacks to Enterprise with the USS Franklin descriptions. Also, when the Excelsior (possibly) was built at the end with a time lapse construction. All-in-all, a movie that comes closer to Gene Roddenberry's vision of exploring space, while also exploring what it means to be human.… Expand

It was so cheesy in the best way possible. The special effects were great, the costumes were great and the set design was great. It just felt a bit empty in some places. Like they had a lot of ideas and not enough time to execute them in the movie.

The characters bring great depth to the already amazing plot. While the first two movies didn't particularly focus on the federations exploration and the key task of the USS Enterprise, this movie shows a lighter side of what the enterprise crew faces, and what the federation brings to the unknown frontier. There is no shortage of humor or action to boot. Spock's emotions are increasingly becoming more human throughout the movies, and that is something to truly fall in love with and feel with the conflicting character. If some may remember, and don't quote me exactly on this but Shatner as Kirk once said "Of all the souls I've encountered in my travels, his was the most....human." It's on thing to watch a movie, but to sit there and feel like you are right there with the characters in the movie is a new high, and Star Trek Beyond delivers that. So please go and enjoy the movie like so many others are, so that they will continue to improve and make greater Star Trek feature films that we can all love and enjoy for generations to come.… Expand

Star Trek was originally a show that explored the basics of morality. Complex dilemmas between cultures, religions & conflicts – even to basic questions regarding social norms and life itself. We might not have gotten that much of it in this, nor the previous two flicks – but it paid a massive respect to its roots and its legacy (it’s the shows 50th anniversary). It’s finally (somewhat) a movie for “trekkies”. ‘Star Trek Beyond’ goes much deeper into the crew than its predecessors. It’s a very fast-paced flick, but it simultaneously catches the splendid character moments. It’s a masterful balance! The film establishes the story one piece at a time, and it’s not fully understandable until in the final act. It’s the antagonist and his motivations that’s not shared until in the final sight. The visualization of the main villain “Krall” is very good – when finally understanding his motivations – which takes a while to know (some out there might even because of that, stay annoyed throughout the whole film). But the well hidden twist that awaits, is worthy a wait!

The basic premise of this film lies much more on characters than the plot itself. Splendid chemistry is a gigantic plus, but the plot could have been much more passionate. There could have been a more want-to to the plot, especially to the climax. To succeed against the villain, and the motivations behind it could have been much greater. Give it more emotion! A more personal conflict! More drama! Not just action and the “several million people could die if the villain will succeed-cliché”. The story also got some convenient events that just felt off – just so the plot can develop. The change in direction could be one miss shoot – but the film really shines with its renewed energy! It’s definitely the most action-packed ST-film to date! It’s way more playful than its predecessors, and the focus lies massively on quantity rather than J.J’s quality. On a personal level did ‘Star Trek Beyond’ feel a bit too uneventful for my taste, even though that there are some really big character moments. Yes, the action did work – but in the end I wasn’t that satisfied. There are some really inventive and intense action-pieces, meanwhile others are “meh” – especially the hand-to-hand combat. But I still adore this film – with its energy & fascinating characters. Yes, even more chemistry & character depth to smaller as big characters could have made this film even greater – including less expositions and much more humor! This film surpassed my expectations, because the trailers did show something that simply wasn’t this film. It might not surpass when it comes to story, but it does with characters!

I enjoyed the movie and I would definitely like to see it again as soon as it becomes available on other channels.
I thought the movie was very much character and action driven, it has a few really funny moments as well.

I did think it was quite light on the story side, there is some form of philosophical tension (which I won't go into because I don't want to give out any spoilers) but the ideological conflict feels forced and a bit thin. It's a missed opportunity really.
The end-result is a movie that will still have enough for most of the trekkies out there, and is also very accessible to the general audience.… Expand

Fortunately, the cast from the previous movies are able to make this change in pace work, being as consistently likable and entertaining as they were in the previous films. Unfortunately, while the scale of the story is welcome, it struggles in the way of character development and themes, setting up some interesting ideas without exploring them for the rest of the movie. And while the previous two films were able to distract with brisk pacing and some well filmed action sequences, Justin Lin does not handle the action sequences well, especially in comparison to Abrams. Many of them are often disorienting and difficult to follow, which makes the narrative shortcomings even more apparent. All of this amounts to a film that makes some improvements upon its predecessors, but also takes many steps backwards, making it less enjoyable in many ways. Star Trek Beyond is still worth watching, but while the crew of the Enterprise boldly goes where no one has gone before, this film doesn't quite have the legs to fully live up to that legacy.… Expand

This is the first film of the "Star Trek" reboot that really seems like it gives two craps about the traditions of the franchise instead of rehashing them to pander to the audience, and it also happens to have a decent and not overly complex story, a ton of action, very good interplay between the iconic characters, and the old-fashioned pulpy adventure feel of the original series.

Unlike the ponderous rehash-riddled plot of "Into Darkness" or the over-the-top retconned AU fanfic origin story of the 2009 "Trek", this one drops the audience into a self-contained story right in the middle of the five-year mission and is all the better for it. Characters like Bones and Spock feel like they already have history, and the writing for them is especially on point, something that can't be said about "Into Darkness".

The action was silly and fun. The villain was interesting. The alien tech on display is also quite awesome. It truly seems like everyone was having a good time making this and I felt it was very entertaining. Even though at times the plot was predictable, no one thing took me out of the film and the performances alone were totally transporting. I can't say enough about how much more I enjoyed this than the ridiculous first two films in this reboot series. It really feels like this reboot has finally found its groove and I hope they keep it up for the recently-announced fourth film.… Expand

Anyway I enjoyed the mix of tons of action, humor and heart Justin lin brought to this movie. Chris pine proves once again he is a great James t Kirk. He is not as demanding as william shatner from what i can rember he still is great. Some of the standouts through is Karl urban as bones and Simon Pegg as Scotty. I also enjoyed the addition of jala. I thought she was super cool and i would like to see more of her character. A few small gripes i have are the villain is about as generic as can get. I mean whats up with Hollywood and generic villains. I felt that zachary quinto didn't brought a little more humor to his character than i would have liked he was still good as always though, Also The twist near the end where the villains revels his motivations are about as bland as they come. Still This movies is worth watching and is much better than into darkness which was not bad it still pares in comparison to this one and the first.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked this. The story and characters felt much more like actual Star Trek than he previous 2 in this re-boot series. There is still the problem of Quinto's Spock making out Vulcans to be the galaxy's most emotional creatures ever, but this is toned down to just the slightly off-beat decision to go save his girlfriend. A few strange dead-ends in the plot only came to me after the credits rolled (what happened to the Yorktown's rescue fleet, for example). The finale is still 'too Hollywood' but taken as a whole the story is engaging and the characters are interesting. Hopefully the success of Pegg's story heralds a trend that ACTUAL FANS of the source material are given prominent roles in bringing the making/remaking to the big-screen, instead of the merchandisers and bean-counters. As a standalone piece of entertainment 9/10, as a Star Trek piece, 7/10. Overall a solid 8/10.… Expand

Star Trek: Beyond is often funny, fast paced and action packed, and features a cool new villain. The film is also co-written by Simon Pegg, and thus has a lot more moments of humor, sometimes resembling the Marvel mold more than Star Trek.
Star Trek films have historically been inconsistent when it comes to humor, some like Star Trek: The Voyage Home or Star Trek (2009) have been very funny, and some like Star Trek: Wrath of Khan, forwent humor for seriousness. This film may just be the funniest Star Trek film yet, because it’s not quite as silly as some of the other films, but manages to have a lot of good quips. The film’s sense of humor is most likely a product of Simon Pegg co-writing the film, and that has proven to be a great decision. It should be stated that the humor does make Star Trek: Beyond feel slightly more like a summer blockbuster than a Star Trek film, and they are different.
Star Trek Beyond is structured slightly more like an action film, as the pacing grows in tempo until the end of the film when it culminates in a big finale. This is more consistent with the pacing of the rebooted franchise, however the film never quite elevates like the previous two films did. The action sequences in this film are very good, which comes as no surprise given that Lin, who is experienced in shooting action sequences was in the helm. One surprise of this film was the villain character, Krall.
The rebooted franchise of Star Trek movies has done an amazing job forming well-rounded villains. The villain in this film feels weak at the beginning, but as the film progresses his motives become more clear. Both Nero and Khan were good villains, and while Krall isn’t as well rounded he is a serviceable villain. That being said the other characters in the film aren’t very well developed, besides Captain Kirk, who is given some development.
All-in-all this is probably the weakest of the rebooted franchise in my opinion, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good movie, it is. Star Trek Beyond is very entertaining, fast paced, action-packed, funny, and has a very good villain. The film is a very good time at the theaters, and is fairly family friendly, for those who love summer blockbusters this is a perfect summer movie for you.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had low expectations going in based on what proved to be a misrepresentative trailer that foregrounded Kirk. Simon Pegg's scintillating script separates Kirk from his crew so that the warm interplay of their characters can be explored as an ensemble piece. When Kirk and an arguably stronger Jaylah (Sofia Boutella previous seen in Kingsman: The Secret Service) return in force in the third act to save the crew, his motivations to regain all those that he cares for and her deep trepidations as a former captive of the antagonist give palpable weight to a fast paced rescue scene.

I was struck at how good the special effects were in terms of their highly imaginative conception. There is no CGI for CGI's sake, but awesomeness for the sake of delivering impactful visual metaphor. I have witnessed a rare thing: epic science fiction conveyed in terms of pure cinema and ensemble relationships explored without a desperate rush to the next whizz-bang. I was mesmerized.

To put things in perspective my 10/10 isn't a 10 to offset the unfair average user score, but as I can't give it a 9.8 I will give it a 10 rather than a 9 even though it is by no means in the same league as an original first film in a franchise like ALIEN, Predator, or Blade Runner. I don't want to mark it down to a 9 just because it is another sequel to a rebooted franchise from a TV series. I don't want to be sneering. This is the best Star Trek movie ever made, and without wanting to enrage fanboys, is twice as good as Star Wars: The Force Awakens - which I thoroughly enjoyed but recognised was a safe retread of A New Hope with some gender swapped characters.

The antagonist does look like strips of Plasticine™ have been glued onto his face, but then the aliens of Star Trek were generally more humanoid than Star Wars (and, indeed Farscape) due to the restrictions of their 60's Desilu Production's TV episodic budget. So, in a way the entirely non humanoid aliens which appear at the outset of this movie are somewhat jarring and occasionally crew from the Enterprise or the Space Station draw you out of the narrative by looking inconsistently bizarre (i.e. a full blown alien cameo is glimpsed in a scene in which a standard ridged-nosed one would have drawn less attention and avoid distracting you from the plot). It is probably the movie's only fault that either be firmly in the camp of the 'aliens are really alien' like Star Wars, or how they were on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with the focus on gradually investing in character relations. Put it this way, take Leia and Han out of Star Wars and you have got nothing, everyone else is a boring void of uninteresting or unexpressed motivation or pent up emo rage. The fact that people think Empire is the best in the series when Han gets "iced" for most of it, leaving Mr Can't Act to whine at Mr Muppet just demonstrates how overated the entire franchise must be when its best episode is so structurally flawed, underutilises all of its characters, and ends on a forlorn cliffhanger.

In contrast, Star Trek Beyond is a masterpiece combining all the best aspects of every Trek movie thus far in one harmonious package with a clear message of hope and unity prevailing over the savage frontier. It is all the better for a fourth act that acknowledges that the luxuries of the Federation may underpin its utopian dream and when confronted with survival without hope of rescue it is understandable that hope should turn to hate.

Doctor 'Bones' McCoy (Karl Urban), Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), Montgomery 'Scotty' Scott (Simon Pegg), and Lieutenant Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana) give standout performances and deliver well crafted dialogue. I don't mind that Kirk (Chris Pine) isn't in the movie that much as I always felt he was miscast and would have liked Matt Damon in the Captain's chair instead. Perhaps, in another alternate reality...… Expand

The dynamics between the characters are fun, the action is entertaining but never too off the rails, and there are some nice moments of tribute to the original show that will make Trekies tear up. It may not have the flash and spectacle of the last two being a smaller and slower story, which may be a turn off to the casual moviegoer, but to those who love the original series there couldn’t be a better way to celebrate 50 years of Trek. Zulu's 'outing' is 'handled sensitively', without anything being 'rammed' down anyone's throats (ahem) and in it's context it just shows what a liberal, progressive place the federation is and reminds you what's at stake.… Expand

Star Trek Beyond is the first of the 3 newest Star Trek films I felt the old Star Trek magic coming back. Read some detractors that feels its not like Star Wars movies, which show how much they know about Star Trek (that is nothing at all).

Wow! All I can say is wow! I'm in my mid 20's, and I grew up with Star Trek all of my life. My childhood memories consist of watching the Star Trek series and the movies. My childhood memories consist of watching the Star Trek series and the movies. In 2009, I was happy when J.J. Abrams rebooted the franchise in movie format. The first reboot, I liked. I loved the new characters. While the story was alright, I enjoyed the movie. Into Darkness was an alright movie, but I did not like them ripping off from Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan.

I love the fact that this movie has an original storyline, as well as elements from the Star Trek universe. I feel like, when J.J. Abrams was directing, that it was all about action and whatnot. Star Trek Beyond grasps what Star Trek was supposed to be like. The character development was fantastic. The Bones and Spock interaction was on point from what the original series was. The movie felt like a glorified two-part episode, which was fantastic. My girlfriend, while new to Star Trek, did not enjoy the first two reboots but she loved this movie. Go see it!… Expand

The crew must fight for their lives after an ambush by a new enemy named Krall (Idris Elba). While the story wasn't completely strong the chemistry of the cast was. Spock missing older Spock from an alternate time line, was also a great tribute to the late Leonard Nimoy. Spoiler: I can also say that Sulu gay does not hurt the birth of his daughter, so relax nerds lol. The late Anton Yelchin (Fright Night) gets the most he got to do in any Star Trek film as Chekov as well.

Idris Elba (Luther) gets a mostly forgettable villain to play but at least he was an original villain, unlike Khan. Sofia Boutella kicks ass though as an alien allie named Jaylah.

I wouldn't even mind if Justin Lin returns as director over JJ. Since JJ has shown with Super 8, Into Darkness and Force Awakens that he is better at making tributes than original movies.

JJ's part 4 would probably have Kirk looking for whales, while searching for Spock. Then part 5 would have Spock's brother who is on a mission to find God lol.… Expand

Not much of a Star Trek fan but, I actually found enjoyment in this. It starts off well and it ends in a great way. Star Trek Beyond expands on its storytelling by making it less about space and more about planetary adventure. Rather than focusing the story around Kirk and Spock it makes an effort to bring other members of the crew into the spotlight. Rather than focusing the story around Kirk and Spock it makes an effort to bring other members of the crew into the spotlight. The tone of the movie is also brighter compared to previous movies; even sometimes feeling similar to Guardians of the Galaxy.

The plot however is vague and a bit bland. The whole picture doesn't come into focus until late into the movie. The villain's motive and his development is ambiguous; I'd say the least interesting out of the three movies.

Also every found technology in the movie magically works to fit the protagonist's needs.
"Scotty can you make this work?"
"Of course! I'd just need to make some minor adjustments."
Interplanetary technology apparently is a simple matter.

Overall an enjoyable movie experience and a commendable change of direction compared to previous installments.… Expand

After the initial action scene, the movie takes a little time to get you up to date with the crew's lives and it was a welcome change to previous movies that were hyperactive. Kirk isn't running everywhere like a headless chicken, he's more somber and calmly authoritative. I didn't get all the old school references since I'm not a trekkie, but they don't hit you on the head with them like in the awful Into Darkness. And the motorcycle from the trailers makes more sense in the movie.

This was a positive experience among all the bad summer movies.… Expand

A good show. Enjoyable, funny and thrilling. Definitely one that most would enjoy. Except the people who lurk about here being salty, of course. I doubt those people enjoy anything.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A movie bordering on greatness, but falling short. The CGI is PHENOMENAL, maybe he best I've ever seen. The acting is very good, and the script is quite good. The drawbacks are small but noticable; the villain is blah, the dialog for Scottie was not what one would expect from a Starfleet graduate (too much lassie and wee), and the motorcycle scene was too easy a way out. I guess it's about what you'd expect from a "Fast and Furious" director. Idris Alba could have been hsed so much more and so much better. Despite these short comings, the movie is thoroughly entertaining. The destruction of the Enterprise was well worth the price of admission alone!… Expand
