I thought this was quite an entertaining watch - some of the foreign accents (Russian and Scottish) made me smirk a little as they didn't sound entirely authentic, shall I say. However, the special effects are quite decent, I quite liked the wandering/free floating style of camerawork and the pace is relatively fast once the plot gets going. Its a fairly engrossing watch with some impressive landscapes/cinematography, some reasonably good dialogue and I did find myself feeling concerned for the characters, so overall I thought it was a good film thats worth a watch.… Expand

Amazingly Adventurous but the feel of JJ Abrams's prequels felt missing!the prequels theme and style with fast-paced action packed full of mind-blowing twist and full of adrenaline rush and lens flare it has its feel of there own watching this movie it felt watching totally new franchise with same cast although the old movies and show's feel was little there,the 1st half has little story's flow issue but after the action and twist it was entertaining till the last,the Spock primes tribute and memory was emotional specially the ending scene of old crew's pic it was incredibly satisfying moment,the music,the visuals and the acting is top notch the story was simply decent the split-ed Crew's adventure was fun and engaging,the planets survivor and team's team-up was amazing,the starting intro to members and the plot of rescue until planet's incident was okay although the Space station's overview was mind-blowingly epic,from the planet's crash and action it was entertaining as hell,the Spock and Doc's each and every moment together was amazing the way there relations are developed it was amazing,the cap's rescue mission till end with twists and fight it was awesome,the old ship's take-off and the awesome space battle upon that the music thing at last it was literally mind-blowing and awesome.Literally last 30 mins were edge of the seat fun the action and chase with amazing hand-to hand combat of cap and old cap the whole mystery of Old ship and there captain felt little rushed as it was figured with clip although it was amazing,after the ending the cap's birthday and Trio's moment with Spock's thing it was a Satisfying end!Overall its an entertainingly amazing movie!… Expand

This movie suffers from the fact that it came out right after the untimely passing of a couple beloved folks. It’s great fun now that time has been allowed to pass. Sad we don’t have another one.

Pretty good flick. Saw it in the IMAX with my family. Had I known some joker would have his bright cell phone out for half of the movie and cause a distraction, I would have waited to watch this at home in my own theater setup.

Justin Lin's Star Trek Beyond is an amazing concluding chapter to this amazing Star Trek trilogy. The characters are still amazing as well as the action sequences. The crew must fight for their lives after an ambush by a new enemy named Krall (Idris Elba). While the story wasn't completely strong the chemistry of the cast was. Spock missing older Spock from an alternate time line, was also a great tribute to the late Leonard Nimoy. Spoiler: I can also say that Sulu gay does not hurt the birth of his daughter, so relax nerds lol. The late Anton Yelchin (Fright Night) gets the most he got to do in any Star Trek film as Chekov as well.

Idris Elba (Luther) gets a mostly forgettable villain to play but at least he was an original villain, unlike Khan. Sofia Boutella kicks ass though as an alien allie named Jaylah.

I wouldn't even mind if Justin Lin returns as director over JJ. Since JJ has shown with Super 8, Into Darkness and Force Awakens that he is better at making tributes than original movies.

JJ's part 4 would probably have Kirk looking for whales, while searching for Spock. Then part 5 would have Spock's brother who is on a mission to find God lol.… Expand

Star Trek Beyond is the third installment in the Star Trek "reboot" movies. The first two directed JJ Abrams and I absolutely loved them. Those worries are put to rest because Justin has directed an awesome film. The action he brings over from Fast and Furious translates very well into Star Trek. The costume, makeup and CGI is once again flawless. The writing by Simon Pegg was smart, interesting, and funny. The cast once again does a tremendous job on being these characters especially Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. Idris Elba's character "Krall" is very interesting. He brings his very good acting and toughness to the character to bring him to life. Even though the characters motivations are unclear until the end.… Expand

While the weakest of the trilogy, it's a fun ride from beginning to end. The characters once again shine in their roles and performances. The only character that felt weak to me was the villain, Krawl, who had a weak motivation and felt very generic. The special effects shine out as the new worlds, spaceships, and vehicles look so spectacular. The new alien races look good with memorable character designs, and adds originality to the franchise. The soundtrack is also the weakest the the trilogy. While I like it just fine, some of the pieces just don't fit in with whats going on. Besides that, it works and sounds good. Action scenes are also pretty fun, with them being shot well, and tension added to make it more entertaining. Overall while not the best in the trilogy, it's still an epic film, and I would recommend it.… Expand

When theirs rescue mission failed...

It's not like I'm a big fan of 'Star Wars', so I disliked it. I have seen many space adventure films, but I never felt this series so interesting. I enjoyed some of the 'Star Trek' films though. I knowWhen theirs rescue mission failed...

It's not like I'm a big fan of 'Star Wars', so I disliked it. I have seen many space adventure films, but I never felt this series so interesting. I enjoyed some of the 'Star Trek' films though. I know this sequel is not good the previous ones, but for me this look okay than those. Because it was so simple, particularly story wise, and the rest of the film was action and adventure.

No offense, but this series is like the collection of the rejections from other franchises. I mean, look at the cast, most of them are comedians and some of them are the category two actors and the rest are, I don't know what they are, bur decent actors. But these films pulled off successfully at the box office. Not a big impact like the recent 'Star Wars' film or any Marvel's films, but quite an impressive figure knowing the above fact I stated.

From the Taiwanese director who made four 'Fast and Furious' films, handled his best for this. This film tells the story of the captain James Kirk, who leads his ship and crew to a rescue mission to a distant planet where some alien race who had stranded. But when they reach their destination, an unknown space army takes them by surprise and they too take a refuse on the same planet. From there how they plan to escape and to learn who were those attackers, all comes in the next half.

This id full of action adventure. The story was little, but quite neatly developed characters, I mean the new ones with some good stunt sequences. As usual, there's no complaint about the graphics. I mean for the casual viewing, but who knows if you carefully look for the flaws, you might get a few. I suggest you to watch it just for an entertainment, but it might fail to satisfy the die-hard fans of 'Star Trek'. I think overall, it is not a bad film, even the two hours long is not an issue due to the good pace. 7/10… Expand

For me, Star Trek Beyond was the first good movie of July, as everything else had either been okay or not good. Not that it was as good as the first one, but I enjoyed this film. I can imagine watching it again and it has quite a bit of entertainment value. The plot and characters were good as well. Also, why would I forget about the villain destroying the ship toward the beginning (which leads me to the overall problems in this movie)?
The scene I was referring to would have been much more powerful toward the end where it could have signaled the height of the conflict and their test of teamwork. Instead, they took the standard Hollywood blockbuster route, where the characters really only take a beating at the beginning and come back through the rest of the film. It also took a little too long to find the plot. I am perhaps missing some of the other minor problems with Beyond, but those were the ones I needed to cover. With all that said, I'll grant it a seal of acknowledgement.… Expand

The action is intense as well, and the special effects are amazing. My main problem with this movie is that it feels inconsequential, it could have done more exploring the planet(s) it took place on and could have maybe shown how they had more of an impact, but I think most people can get over this. I also would have liked to see how they are going to continue the series. I wish there were a bit more indication, but regardless this is definitely a buy on blue ray this holiday and I would say I recommend it for any fans of si-f movies with fun action and good writing.… Expand

"Beyond" was not the kind of sequel we expected. Despite excessive unease by fanatics since the announcement of Justin Lin as captain of the USS Enterprise - which resided in that he could exceed his own limits with a franchise as long-lived as perpetual, - Lin delivers a breath of uplifting and new air to the vigorous reboot that J.J. Abrams began in 2009, but the film feels like an extensive TV episode focused on the memorable action sequences, neglecting the primordial which is an unforgettable argument, as well as the wasted talent of Elba; it seems that they leave unfinished threads of the story, substituting such defect with an action scene. Although it promises renovations and inventions profitable for the saga, the film ends up as a summer film more with big-budget.

The Enterprise is dispatched on a rescue mission after an escape pod emerged in the space, in the middle of a nebula. Giddily, the crew goes to the scene, in where, unfortunately, turns into an ambush by small ships similar to a swarm, that perforate and destroy the ship Enterprise, aggressively. Without weapons nor defenses, the crew is forced to leave the beloved ship, falling into a desolate planet called Altamid. Now, the team will have to survive, restore the spacecraft, solve their personal problems and combat the villain, Krall - who searches for a relic called an Abronath that Kirk had obtained for a failed diplomatic mission - to keep the Star Trek universe stable.

What role does the third installment in the Star Trek universe? Tabulating similarities and differences present in the film, "Beyond" approximates to installments #5 ("The Final Frontier") and #9 ("Insurrection") due to its particular autonomy and beyond gigantic effects and budgets, they were installments that narrated certain experiences of the crew, nevertheless, this time, the purpose is to weave one new central story interconnected with the sub-plots of others.

The mandate of Lin takes a detour from the prominent influence that Abrams had by "Star Wars"; Lin opts for a world more comical and fabulous, Pegg and Jun were crucial to support not only the new atmosphere with a different script and not very practical as seen before in "Into Darkness", also, it is noticeable an improvement in the massive and apocalyptic destruction of the NCC-1701 that, although , does not generate the same impact that would obtain the annihilation of the Millennium Falcon , but the comparisons between these juxtaposed universes are unnecessary.

To some extent, the longevity of the movie series is due to their well-argued villains, spreading panic among audience since their first appearances, crossing from Khan played by Ricardo Montalban in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" to Benedict Cumberbatch in "Into Darkness". Now, the time is for a convincing male actor, nothing less than Idris Elba. With a career worthy of being applauded, he has joined to Trek universe buried under all the prosthetics - fatal decision, I realize until the ending, when I saw his face -. Krall is the antagonist, a villain with weak and unconvincing motivations, who does give nothing strong to the simple plot, an unacceptable waste of talent and potential, the same happened with Oscar Issac in "X-Men: Apocalypse"

Besides the addition of Elba, an attractive and fascinating character is joined to the team. The newcomer, Sofia Boutella, who will return to use layers of makeup on the reboot of "The Mummy" (2017) to the universe of monsters from Universal and who participated in "Kingsman: The Secret Service" , her biggest success so far, she is Jaylah, a survivor who took refuge on the USS Franklin after the attack of Krall. Suggestive and promising future for Jaylah, a new member is equal to new adventures.

Our former members of the crew, who have been the authors of the renovation of the saga - involved for seven years - continue to growing. The Kirk/Spock/McCoy trio are more attractive and spontaneous than previous movies, Pegg continues moving forward with Scotty, Uhura is a beacon of light and all others persist in the search for their self-realization, the new crew no longer has any reason to "envy" original crew. Sadly, we have missed two big guys, not only in the Star Trek family, but two great human beings. Our Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) died by a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the last year and, fatally, Anton Yelchin (Pavel Chekov) died by forceful traumatic choking due to an accident car in this same year, however, they have only disappeared of way physical, since continue alive and latent in the heart of the universe Star Trek, masters, rest in peace.

"Beyond", faithful to the original saga, delivers a succulent film for the Trekkies, however, does it neglecting the consistency in its story and some of its characters. Supported by a mythology that expands more and more, "Star Trek Beyond" is the best in the franchise, even though, the word "best" is hypothetical.… Expand

A fun movie for a hot day. No it was not as good as many of the previous Star Trek films I’ve seen, but it was not terrible either. I did keep thinking, though, that many of these actors must have long term contracts, since they seemed just aA fun movie for a hot day. This comment does not apply to Simon Pegg, but he may have had a bigger stake in the game since he also worked on the script. Best of all, though, was Sofia Boutella as Jaylah, and I wondered why Krall had so much energy and was so interesting, until I realized it was the great Idris Elba. I pined for the old cast, none of whom were as lithe and slick as the younger generation, but all of whom had more humanity and personality. Still, there was plenty of action to keep me awake and I enjoyed myself.… Expand

Also, the script can balance well comedy, action and drama, and avoid getting too run movie. Highlighting the excellent performances, the beautiful addition of the personage of Sofia Boutella and a convincing villain with a great performance of Idris Elba. After the initial action scene, the movie takes a little time to get you up to date with the crew's lives and it was a welcome change to previous movies that were hyperactive. Kirk isn't running everywhere like a headless chicken, he's more somber and calmly authoritative. I didn't get all the old school references since I'm not a trekkie, but they don't hit you on the head with them like in the awful Into Darkness. And the motorcycle from the trailers makes more sense in the movie.

This was a positive experience among all the bad summer movies.… Expand

Bien, este concepto se aplica como debe, te esperas lo que pasa, y cuando sucede, va el director y te cambia todo de sitio!, no hay arriba ni abajo, es una locura maravillosamente planificada y sin olvidarse de que la película pertenece a la saga star trek.
Y todo maravillosamente orquestado por el que hizo "rápidos y furiosos", que por raro que parezca si se le da un elemento en el que puede expresarse como quiere, salen películas maravillosamente perfectas como esta.

1. Their spaceship is the U.S.S. Enterprise. Now guess what: the U.S.S. stands for "United States Ship" in nautical parlance. But we are led to believe the Enterprise is merely part of the Federation Starfleet. If that is the case, the U.S.S. designation should be dropped.

2. The writers for Star Trek are (usually) careful when they assign rank designations to the characters in the movie. The commanding officer of a starship, for example is a captain (remember Captain Picard in the TV series?). A captain in the navy has four stripes on the cuff of his sleeve, and Picard had 4 buttons on his collar (close enough). The officer just below the captain has the rank of commander (remember Commander Riker in series 2 - 7?) A navy commander has three stripes on the cuff of his sleeve, and Riker had three buttons on his collar (again, close enough).

Now to Star Trek Beyond. Early in the movie Captain Kirk docks the Enterprise at a huge star base to consult with his superior about an upcoming mission. His superior--a woman--holds the rank of commodore. That is the equivalent of a one-star admiral, just one rank above captain. But now things start to get messy. The commodore says she will consult with "the council" to get Kirk promoted to vice admiral. Huh? A vice admiral has three stars and is senior to all commodores and rear admirals. It held a very easy to follow plot with a lot of elements of what happens when you end up losing hope from abandonment and when you lose your place in the world. Where do you belong and what do you do when you lost your way.

A fun movie for a hot day. No it was not as good as many of the previous Star Trek films I’ve seen, but it was not terrible either. I did keep thinking, though, that many of these actors must have long term contracts, since they seemed just aA fun movie for a hot day. I did keep thinking, though, that many of these actors must have long term contracts, since they seemed just a little bored, especially Chris Pine. This comment does not apply to Simon Pegg, but he may have had a bigger stake in the game since he also worked on the script. Best of all, though, was Sofia Boutella as Jaylah, and I wondered why Krall had so much energy and was so interesting, until I realized it was the great Idris Elba. I pined for the old cast, none of whom were as lithe and slick as the younger generation, but all of whom had more humanity and personality. Still, there was plenty of action to keep me awake and I enjoyed myself.… Expand

I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The movie works because it knows exactly what it wants to be. This is a summer blockbuster through and through. They didn't overcomplicate anything andI wasn't sure what to expect from this movie. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The movie works because it knows exactly what it wants to be. This is a summer blockbuster through and through. They didn't overcomplicate anything and they didn't try to shoehorn some super genius villain into the plot. There's a LOT of action, explosions and a few chuckles, but it doesn't devolve into some cringy cheese fest. There are some stupid holes in the script (queue SW:TFA-like "randomly crash-land on a planet right next to major plot device"), but it's not that glaring and the pace and tone of the movie can hide it for the most part.

My biggest gripe with it is that there is actually a bit too much action and some of these scenes drag on for so long that the movie fails to keep up the tension throughout. Then, when we finally get some exposition and dialog at the end I actually felt like we could have used a bit more of this in the middle as well.… Expand

It may not have the flash and spectacle of the last two being a smaller and slower story, which may be a turn off to the casual moviegoer, but to those who love the original series there couldn’t be a better way to celebrate 50 years of Trek. My childhood memories consist of watching the Star Trek series and the movies. In 2009, I was happy when J.J. Abrams rebooted the franchise in movie format. The first reboot, I liked. I loved the new characters. While the story was alright, I enjoyed the movie. Into Darkness was an alright movie, but I did not like them ripping off from Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan.

I love the fact that this movie has an original storyline, as well as elements from the Star Trek universe. I feel like, when J.J. Abrams was directing, that it was all about action and whatnot. Star Trek Beyond grasps what Star Trek was supposed to be like. The character development was fantastic. The Bones and Spock interaction was on point from what the original series was. The movie felt like a glorified two-part episode, which was fantastic. My girlfriend, while new to Star Trek, did not enjoy the first two reboots but she loved this movie. Go see it!… Expand

As someone who is a pretty big fan of the second Star Trek movie, and thought the first was tolerable, this movie was a satisfying end to the reboot trilogy now. First off, while it may not be as strong as it's predecessor Into Darkness, itAs someone who is a pretty big fan of the second Star Trek movie, and thought the first was tolerable, this movie was a satisfying end to the reboot trilogy now. First off, while it may not be as strong as it's predecessor Into Darkness, it manages to keep itself serious enough to tell a decent story while not being overbearingly grim. In a sense, tone-wise it's somewhere in the middle of it's two predecessors.
Pros: Once again the special effects of the movie are top-notch, no one will walk away saying the action sequences didn't look awesome. The gravity-bending near the end of the movie especially are very well done, and are almost as disorienting as it is to the characters. Acting-wise all the supporting characters are given a bit more screen-time and definitely make the most of it. McCoy and Spock's interactions are definitely a highlight as comedic relief, and I have to give a special nod to Chekov's development with Kirk. (Anton will be sorely missed).
Cons: Not every supporting character was quite as well done though, the character of Jaylah checks off every archetype of alien/kinda primal ally that has a grudge on said villain.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A movie bordering on greatness, but falling short. The CGI is PHENOMENAL, maybe he best I've ever seen. The acting is very good, and the script is quite good. The drawbacks are small but noticable; the villain is blah, the dialog for Scottie was not what one would expect from a Starfleet graduate (too much lassie and wee), and the motorcycle scene was too easy a way out. Star Trek Beyond expands on its storytelling by making it less about space and more about planetary adventure. Rather than focusing the story around Kirk and Spock it makes an effort to bring other members of the crew into the spotlight. The tone of the movie is also brighter compared to previous movies; even sometimes feeling similar to Guardians of the Galaxy.

The plot however is vague and a bit bland. The whole picture doesn't come into focus until late into the movie. The villain's motive and his development is ambiguous; I'd say the least interesting out of the three movies.

Also every found technology in the movie magically works to fit the protagonist's needs.
"Scotty can you make this work?"
"Of course! I'd just need to make some minor adjustments."
Interplanetary technology apparently is a simple matter.

Overall an enjoyable movie experience and a commendable change of direction compared to previous installments.… Expand

Visually, It's a stunning film and even with a 2 hour run time, I didn't get bored watching it.

Hats off to Simon Pegg. He wrote a good film and I think that's the main reason everything clicked so well. It's a shame that they had to cut it to shreds in order to fit a more watch-able run time because I am sure it would have been even better if it were slightly longer.… Expand

The USS Enterprise in nearly three years into its five-year voyage, and Captain James Kirk (Chris Pine) along with his crew arrive at Yorktown in order to replenish some dwindling supplies. We also see that Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana) have ended their relationship, Spock also receives some devastating news, and wonders whether or not he should continue his mission with the rest of the Enterprise.

The film's main enemy is Krall (Idris Elba), and he plans to bring the Enterprise down, which leaves many of the crew members separated and stranded onto Nebula. It is there that we see Spock stranded with Dr. Leonard McCoy (Karl Urban), Kirk with Chekov (the late Anton Yelchin), Scotty (Simon Pegg) encounters Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), and Uhura and Sulu (John Cho) are trapped with the evil Krall.

The crew members take their time to find each other and get back to their mission, but they struggle to find out where they all are, nor can they keep up with what Krall wants to do.

There is a lot to talk about, but without spoiling too much, what I can say is that this film is fun...even more so than its predecessor 'Star Trek Into Darkness' (2013), which was also fine, but for the most part, the ending towards that film seemed convenient and almost too easy. Director Justin Lin of 'Fast & Furious' (2009) does an impressive job of keeping the tone significant and consistent throughout, and the sometimes sharp screenplay by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung do provide some comic relief, but as is the case with its 2013 predecessor, sometimes the lines sound cheesy and unnatural.

When J.J. Abrams (who serves as this film's producer) rebooted the franchise in 2009, it was a strong start for a new generation of fans to get invested with these characters and their missions, then in 2013, what we had was a rather middling adventure that ended too conveniently as I mentioned above. This is a solid installment to the franchise, but after the first two acts, it does lose some momentum as it feels as if the mission takes its time to actually get complete.

Idris Elba is fine as Krall, and plays him with such intimidation, but overall, he is forgettable. You will find yourself getting mostly invested with Sofia Boutella's character, Jaylah, who proves to be something exciting for this franchise's future sequels (if they are to come).

Overall, this is an enjoyable summer flick, better than its predecessor, but not as strong as its first installment. "Star Trek" fans in general should be happy with what Justin Lin has done.… Expand

Somehow this paints a more true to life image.

This is the first film of the "Star Trek" reboot that really seems like it gives two craps about the traditions of the franchise instead of rehashing them to pander to the audience, and it also happens to have a decent and not overly complex story, a ton of action, very good interplay between the iconic characters, and the old-fashioned pulpy adventure feel of the original series.

Unlike the ponderous rehash-riddled plot of "Into Darkness" or the over-the-top retconned AU fanfic origin story of the 2009 "Trek", this one drops the audience into a self-contained story right in the middle of the five-year mission and is all the better for it. Characters like Bones and Spock feel like they already have history, and the writing for them is especially on point, something that can't be said about "Into Darkness".

The action was silly and fun. The villain was interesting. The alien tech on display is also quite awesome. It truly seems like everyone was having a good time making this and I felt it was very entertaining. Even though at times the plot was predictable, no one thing took me out of the film and the performances alone were totally transporting. I can't say enough about how much more I enjoyed this than the ridiculous first two films in this reboot series. It really feels like this reboot has finally found its groove and I hope they keep it up for the recently-announced fourth film.… Expand

Star Trek Beyond may not be the best space voyage for many, but it's a great summer film if you're only looking for a fun silly time at the movies.

The energy, the character's and the bold scope are the things that makes Beyond watchable. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the cast are all fantastic in the roles. And this actually feels like an actual Star Trek movie and not a full on remake like "Into Darkness" was. All thanks to Justin Lin.

If only the editing and the villain was improved then this would have gotten a stronger rating. I didn't think the villain was terrible or anything like that, but it was a waste of Idris Elba. I mean, yeah his motivations are relieved at the climax of what he's trying to do and it kinda makes sense. The villain himself wasn't that interesting to me.

Overall rating: Star Trek Beyond is right up there with "X-Men: Apocalypse" as the most fun I had at the cinema. While I liked the first movie a lot more, I still think this a solid third entry to this new franchise.

Rest in piece Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin. Live long and prosper.… Expand

Star Trek was originally a show that explored the basics of morality. Complex dilemmas between cultures, religions & conflicts – even to basic questions regarding social norms and life itself. We might not have gotten that much of it in this, nor the previous two flicks – but it paid a massive respect to its roots and its legacy (it’s the shows 50th anniversary). It’s finally (somewhat) a movie for “trekkies”. ‘Star Trek Beyond’ goes much deeper into the crew than its predecessors. It’s a very fast-paced flick, but it simultaneously catches the splendid character moments. It’s a masterful balance! The film establishes the story one piece at a time, and it’s not fully understandable until in the final act. It’s the antagonist and his motivations that’s not shared until in the final sight. The visualization of the main villain “Krall” is very good – when finally understanding his motivations – which takes a while to know (some out there might even because of that, stay annoyed throughout the whole film). But the well hidden twist that awaits, is worthy a wait!

The basic premise of this film lies much more on characters than the plot itself. Splendid chemistry is a gigantic plus, but the plot could have been much more passionate. There could have been a more want-to to the plot, especially to the climax. To succeed against the villain, and the motivations behind it could have been much greater. Give it more emotion! A more personal conflict! More drama! Not just action and the “several million people could die if the villain will succeed-cliché”. The story also got some convenient events that just felt off – just so the plot can develop. The change in direction could be one miss shoot – but the film really shines with its renewed energy! It’s definitely the most action-packed ST-film to date! It’s way more playful than its predecessors, and the focus lies massively on quantity rather than J.J’s quality. On a personal level did ‘Star Trek Beyond’ feel a bit too uneventful for my taste, even though that there are some really big character moments. Yes, the action did work – but in the end I wasn’t that satisfied. There are some really inventive and intense action-pieces, meanwhile others are “meh” – especially the hand-to-hand combat. But I still adore this film – with its energy & fascinating characters. Yes, even more chemistry & character depth to smaller as big characters could have made this film even greater – including less expositions and much more humor! This film surpassed my expectations, because the trailers did show something that simply wasn’t this film. It might not surpass when it comes to story, but it does with characters!

I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. I liked Star Trek 09 (7/10), but I wasn't a fan of Into Darkness (5/10). To my horror, the first trailer for Star Trek:Beyond made it seem like they were completely destroying the series, making it STAR TREK PRESENTED BY: MOUNTAIN DEW CODE RED. Subsequent trailers and interviews eased my anxiety so I went into this movie last night with an open mind. And WOW this is one of the better modern Star Trek films that I've seen!

It had the perfect blend of the old star trek "exploration" and "philosophy" mixed with great action and amazing visual effects. There was actual character development this time around, but I feel like the writing hindered some of the characters from reaching their true potential. Still, the stories that were presented are passable for a summer flick. They also made big references to the Star Trek: Enterprise and TOS shows, so that was really awesome. Lastly to my biggest surprise, the Beastie Boys scene that caused me so much cringe in the first trailer gave me the biggest smile in the theater! I'm actually surprised they pulled it off so well.

All in all I'd say this deserves a 8/10. Much better than Into Darkness, about on par with Star Trek 09, but with more emphasis on the story and less lens flair. It was as close to a Mass Effect movie as I'll ever get, so if you're a fan of that series I think you'll like this.… Expand

Well, in my opinion, there was not anything special, but generally I liked the first part of the movie: it was much-much better, believe me. The second one was about destroying, killing, fighting, etc. But the first one was about relations between characters. I was worried by the director Justin Lin going to carry this Star Trek into a direction that wouldn't gel well with this reboot universe but I actually believe he handled the reigns almost better than JJ Abrams. This film does something that the previous Star Treks didn't seem to do, callbacks to the original series. Comedy is more of the focus of this film but not in the way that is much in the way of jokes but playing off the banter of the crew along with clever and enjoyably goofy scenes. The performances of the reboot crew is as strong as ever for I got the feeling that I was watching an extended episode of the original series in a good way. The special effects are as strong as ever for scenes of destruction have impact and fun. The only major complaints that I have at the film is the villain is a weak one complemented by his explanation and backstory and that one character's tragedy and how you think it is going to resolve doesn't even come through and feels pointless to throw into the story. Honestly this film more deserves an 8.5/10 but Metacritic doesn't allow half points but all and all this film is certainly worth seeing even more than one time and is in my consideration of top ten films of the year… Expand

To begin with, just so you know where I'm coming from, I loved 2009's Star Trek. After seeing it, I was incredibly optimistic about the future of this franchise. Into Darkness nearly dashed that optimism. I've seen it a couple of times, and ITo begin with, just so you know where I'm coming from, I loved 2009's Star Trek. After seeing it, I was incredibly optimistic about the future of this franchise. Into Darkness nearly dashed that optimism. I've seen it a couple of times, and I just can't get into it. So, I was very reserved going into Star Trek Beyond. I'd seen only one of the trailers, and no other promotional material. I had no real expectations for it.

Star Trek Beyond is actually quite entertaining. The movie moves at a good pace, and I didn't feel like it got bogged down at any point. In fact, I wouldn't have minded if they slowed down and developed their new characters a bit. Krall never quite rises above "generic villain" status, and even Jayla, who plays well off the rest of the cast, isn't a very complex.

The returning cast are all very fun to watch. They have great on-screen chemistry, though they tend to blend together a bit. For most of the film, you could easily swap out one for another in a scene. They don't play as very unique individuals. Some of their individual arcs - where we see them struggle with who they are or what they want - are too briefly addressed to make an impact.

The action and effects were great. There were so many thrilling sequences. They didn't always make a ton of sense, but they were incredibly fun to watch. I will say, though, that there's one alien race which is entirely CG, and it's very jarring. Practical creature effects would have been better.

Overall, it was an enjoyable film. It didn't reach nearly the heights that it was capable of, but as summer blockbusters go, it was well worth seeing it in cinemas.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had low expectations going in based on what proved to be a misrepresentative trailer that foregrounded Kirk. Simon Pegg's scintillating script separates Kirk from his crew so that the warm interplay of their characters can be explored as an ensemble piece. When Kirk and an arguably stronger Jaylah (Sofia Boutella previous seen in Kingsman: The Secret Service) return in force in the third act to save the crew, his motivations to regain all those that he cares for and her deep trepidations as a former captive of the antagonist give palpable weight to a fast paced rescue scene.

I was struck at how good the special effects were in terms of their highly imaginative conception. There is no CGI for CGI's sake, but awesomeness for the sake of delivering impactful visual metaphor. I have witnessed a rare thing: epic science fiction conveyed in terms of pure cinema and ensemble relationships explored without a desperate rush to the next whizz-bang. I was mesmerized.

To put things in perspective my 10/10 isn't a 10 to offset the unfair average user score, but as I can't give it a 9.8 I will give it a 10 rather than a 9 even though it is by no means in the same league as an original first film in a franchise like ALIEN, Predator, or Blade Runner. I don't want to mark it down to a 9 just because it is another sequel to a rebooted franchise from a TV series. I don't want to be sneering. This is the best Star Trek movie ever made, and without wanting to enrage fanboys, is twice as good as Star Wars: The Force Awakens - which I thoroughly enjoyed but recognised was a safe retread of A New Hope with some gender swapped characters.

The antagonist does look like strips of Plasticine™ have been glued onto his face, but then the aliens of Star Trek were generally more humanoid than Star Wars (and, indeed Farscape) due to the restrictions of their 60's Desilu Production's TV episodic budget. So, in a way the entirely non humanoid aliens which appear at the outset of this movie are somewhat jarring and occasionally crew from the Enterprise or the Space Station draw you out of the narrative by looking inconsistently bizarre (i.e. a full blown alien cameo is glimpsed in a scene in which a standard ridged-nosed one would have drawn less attention and avoid distracting you from the plot). It is probably the movie's only fault that either be firmly in the camp of the 'aliens are really alien' like Star Wars, or how they were on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with the focus on gradually investing in character relations. Put it this way, take Leia and Han out of Star Wars and you have got nothing, everyone else is a boring void of uninteresting or unexpressed motivation or pent up emo rage. The fact that people think Empire is the best in the series when Han gets "iced" for most of it, leaving Mr Can't Act to whine at Mr Muppet just demonstrates how overated the entire franchise must be when its best episode is so structurally flawed, underutilises all of its characters, and ends on a forlorn cliffhanger.

In contrast, Star Trek Beyond is a masterpiece combining all the best aspects of every Trek movie thus far in one harmonious package with a clear message of hope and unity prevailing over the savage frontier. It is all the better for a fourth act that acknowledges that the luxuries of the Federation may underpin its utopian dream and when confronted with survival without hope of rescue it is understandable that hope should turn to hate.

Doctor 'Bones' McCoy (Karl Urban), Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), Montgomery 'Scotty' Scott (Simon Pegg), and Lieutenant Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana) give standout performances and deliver well crafted dialogue. I don't mind that Kirk (Chris Pine) isn't in the movie that much as I always felt he was miscast and would have liked Matt Damon in the Captain's chair instead. It's pretty good overall just like the first one. That into fartness was pretty bad lol lets be honest. That movie is like a 5...

But this one actually makes sense for the most part, has a villain that isn't trash, and actually has funny jokes. Bones in particular is hilarious. The film also pays respect to the original trekkies which was nice. Unlike that last movie which got Khan all wrong... Ugh.... Anyways believe it or not this new one did a good job for the most part. Easily a 7/8/9 out of 10. I never give 10's because there is no such thing as a perfect film but this one is still worth the money to go see in theaters.

Letting Simon Pegg write instead of that hack David lindolhoff or however the heck you spell his stupid name made a huge difference obviously lol.

Clearly Abrams focused more on star wars than he did with into fartness. The changes of developers behind beyond was for the best and it worked out pretty good. This was totally better than the last one. You can't really hate this film. It's a good star trek film.

Bonus... The new characters added to the cast are VERY good in this film. Best part of the movie honestly.… Expand

Even so I did have one major epiphany - In an era where we are on the cusp of general availability of self driving cars - who would put a human in charge of "flying" a spaceship. What human could calculate thrust levels relative to structural integrity much less make the kind of microsecond adjustment needed to maneuver like a hot rod in atmosphere. Humans will interface with computers to drive cars in 30 years - they will not perform the actual maneuvering of a space ship in 300 years. In fact my question became - what will a deep space probe actually look like in 300 years. Will it be more machine and wet-ware in a form of cyber-synth without any legacy human element?

But for the early 21st Century it did provide 2 hours of mindless entertainment. So it gets a 7.… Expand

Star Trek: Beyond is here, and it is truly unlike any other Star Trek movie you’ve ever seen. Directed by Justin Lin, who directed four entries in the Fast and Furious franchise, the film continues on the more fast paced and slightlyStar Trek: Beyond is here, and it is truly unlike any other Star Trek movie you’ve ever seen. Directed by Justin Lin, who directed four entries in the Fast and Furious franchise, the film continues on the more fast paced and slightly bombastic feel of the rebooted franchise. Star Trek: Beyond is often funny, fast paced and action packed, and features a cool new villain. The film is also co-written by Simon Pegg, and thus has a lot more moments of humor, sometimes resembling the Marvel mold more than Star Trek.
Star Trek films have historically been inconsistent when it comes to humor, some like Star Trek: The Voyage Home or Star Trek (2009) have been very funny, and some like Star Trek: Wrath of Khan, forwent humor for seriousness. This film may just be the funniest Star Trek film yet, because it’s not quite as silly as some of the other films, but manages to have a lot of good quips. The film’s sense of humor is most likely a product of Simon Pegg co-writing the film, and that has proven to be a great decision. It should be stated that the humor does make Star Trek: Beyond feel slightly more like a summer blockbuster than a Star Trek film, and they are different.
Star Trek Beyond is structured slightly more like an action film, as the pacing grows in tempo until the end of the film when it culminates in a big finale. This is more consistent with the pacing of the rebooted franchise, however the film never quite elevates like the previous two films did. The action sequences in this film are very good, which comes as no surprise given that Lin, who is experienced in shooting action sequences was in the helm. One surprise of this film was the villain character, Krall.
The rebooted franchise of Star Trek movies has done an amazing job forming well-rounded villains. The villain in this film feels weak at the beginning, but as the film progresses his motives become more clear. Both Nero and Khan were good villains, and while Krall isn’t as well rounded he is a serviceable villain. That being said the other characters in the film aren’t very well developed, besides Captain Kirk, who is given some development.
All-in-all this is probably the weakest of the rebooted franchise in my opinion, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good movie, it is. Star Trek Beyond is very entertaining, fast paced, action-packed, funny, and has a very good villain. The film is a very good time at the theaters, and is fairly family friendly, for those who love summer blockbusters this is a perfect summer movie for you.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked this. The story and characters felt much more like actual Star Trek than he previous 2 in this re-boot series. There is still the problem of Quinto's Spock making out Vulcans to be the galaxy's most emotional creatures ever, but this is toned down to just the slightly off-beat decision to go save his girlfriend. A few strange dead-ends in the plot only came to me after the credits rolled (what happened to the Yorktown's rescue fleet, for example). The finale is still 'too Hollywood' but taken as a whole the story is engaging and the characters are interesting. Hopefully the success of Pegg's story heralds a trend that ACTUAL FANS of the source material are given prominent roles in bringing the making/remaking to the big-screen, instead of the merchandisers and bean-counters. As a standalone piece of entertainment 9/10, as a Star Trek piece, 7/10. Overall a solid 8/10.… Expand

I have not watched the star trek movies in a very long time so i am no Trekkie. However I do remember bits and pieces. For the third entry into the rebooted star trek cannon this was very good. For the third entry into the rebooted star trek cannon this was very good. It does not come close to the excellent film that was the first but then again isn't the first always the best one?. Anyway I enjoyed the mix of tons of action, humor and heart Justin lin brought to this movie. Chris pine proves once again he is a great James t Kirk. He is not as demanding as william shatner from what i can rember he still is great. Some of the standouts through is Karl urban as bones and Simon Pegg as Scotty. I also enjoyed the addition of jala. I thought she was super cool and i would like to see more of her character. A few small gripes i have are the villain is about as generic as can get. I mean whats up with Hollywood and generic villains. I felt that zachary quinto didn't brought a little more humor to his character than i would have liked he was still good as always though, Also The twist near the end where the villains revels his motivations are about as bland as they come. Still This movies is worth watching and is much better than into darkness which was not bad it still pares in comparison to this one and the first.… Expand
