Raimi I yearn for the day that sequels prefer scaling back in lieu of the Overstuff. Villain on top of villain - tone change outside of tone change - poor Mary Jane is regarded with the same nonchalance...bouncing to and from the same 2 men. Raimi invests 15 minutes into the Sandman's backstory then drops him as a character til Venom requires a tag partner. One moment Tobey's got roid rage, the next he's strutting like Tony Manero from Flatbush. Poor flick requires a valium. Thankfully, admist all the schizo ambitions, there are pleasures. The menace of the 'venom' is both well-realized as a possessory and malicious source. Tobey glides through the material with his usual effusive ease. Villainy is far more suited to Topher's lizard eyes...and the special effects, especially the disintegrating grains of the Sandman. If only there was some tonal coherence and a singular commitment. The I really enjoyed the first two movies, and I've been an off-and-on fan of the comic book. I found this movie to be one of the most over-done, over-produced, heavy-handed, plot-hole-ridden films I've seen in a long time. The director / producers wanted to put so much action into the movie, it's hard to follow what's happening within the action scenes. They don't even look remotely realistic anymore -- how could they, when you have Spidey and the Green Goblin battling high-speed in a 10-foot-wide alleyway, with numerous explosions and things whizzing by and shouted "witty" repartee that's really cheese-tastic? I guess the producers were going for sensory overload, but some of us actually enjoy a decent PLOT. The comedy (if you can call it that) is heavy handed and poorly written; there's a scene where Sam Raimi appears that should have been cut completely as it lasts far too long, is really cheesy and adds nothing to the story. It's almost like it's there for self-gratification and for no other reason. There are glaring plot holes that leave you wondering, why didn't that character say that earlier, before all of this happened? Scenes where Parker is being a B.A. come off as ridiculous. The Moral of the Story isn't worked into the theme, it isn't suggested to you, it's HAMMERED into you, YOU HAVE A CHOICE, DARN IT! And in case you don't catch it the first time, they actually tell you over and over again. The whole thing left me really disappointed and almost offended that the people that made this movie had done this to the franchise. If this is what the series is to become, let McGuire and the others go on to other projects and leave Spidey alone. Expand

Audiences will be inundated with an esoteric and complicated storyline, partly because of the addition of three new villains, which are not sufficiently delved into and which thereby dilutes their dangerous dispositions. This strategy employed by the writers and producers makes Spidey 3 eerily similar to the disastrous Batman movies that had two or three major villains vying for the hero's demise. A religious tract that I very recently spotted in a men's room, not shy about being up-to-the-minute on pop culture zeitgeist but apparently reluctant to use Captain Jack Sparrow as a role model, drew a pertinent analogy between living A religious tract that I very recently spotted in a men's room, not shy about being up-to-the-minute on pop culture zeitgeist but apparently reluctant to use Captain Jack Sparrow as a role model, drew a pertinent analogy between living the Christian life and being everyone's favorite web-slinger. The pamphlet's thesis was that to truly serve the Lord, Christians have to say goodbye to those things in the world they love, just as Peter Parker, in order to effectively fight crime and save the world (or at least New York City), must give up his beloved Mary Jane. Since great drama often involves having to make impossible Sophie's choices like this, the first Spider-Man movie still stands as the cream of Sam Raimi's trilogy. It tells us that you can't fulfill your destiny and STILL have MJ's love at the same time; Spider-Man 2, seen by most critics and fans as the apex of the series, counters that you CAN. Spider-Man 3's thesis is that, yes, it IS possible...but it's tough work. All the debate about whether this installment is overlong, overstuffed and/or has two or three villains too many has obscured the fact that, even more than Spideys 1 and 2, Spidey 3 is a relationship movie front and center; lose the action sequences, colorful costumes and mysterious black goo, and you've got a bigger chick flick than Pretty Woman. The ups and downs of Peter's and MJ's romance are discussed at great length and in great detail, with not one but two third parties around to provide dramatic conflict...and, most revealingly of all, the movie's final shot is NOT of Spidey in action but of...well, see for yourself. Co-scenarist Alvin Sargent's previous credits (Ordinary People, Julia) clearly show that he knows his way around material like this, but the occasionally forced results, such as an extended restaurant sequence in which MJ (Kirsten Dunst) tries to share a heartbreaking professional setback with Peter (Tobey Maguire) and every contrivance in the world including a Clouseau-like head waiter combines to keep the message uncommunicated, show that Sargent isn't quite working at his peak here. (And in regards to another subplot, someone should remind Sargent and co-writers Sam and Ivan Raimi that amnesia, short-term memory or whatever you want to call it, was officially outlawed by Congress after it was used in a Gomer Pyle episode in 1967.) More successful is the movie's depiction of Peter's increasingly excessive pride in being Spider-Man, which morphs into hubris and then egomania. This is depicted powerfully enough that the comic-book McGuffin (a spiny, tar-like substance from the skies with characteristics common to the Alien, the Beast with Five Fingers and the Id Monster) doesn't seem entirely necessary to explain it. Whether three villains in one movie is or isn't a case of oversplat is best left discussed elsewhere, but it is what it is, and Thomas Haden Church, Topher Grace and James Franco are more than satisfactory, with Church very affectingly haunted as Sandman; all three have interesting and convincing dimensions and motivations, but then Spider-Man's nemeses have always had more gray areas than a shelf full of Jodi Picoult novels. Special effects are more than worth your ten bucks (Sandman's transformation in particular is memorably majestic and tragic) and the climactic punch-and-spin-out over the city delivers the goods, even if the unnecessary inclusion of reporters telling us what we're already seeing is hokey enough for a 1940s serial but has no place here. Spidey 3 isn't perfect, and yes, it is overall the weakest of the three, but it's interestingly offbeat and ambitious. In The Summer Of The Third Part That's Less Than The Other Two (Either Together Or Individually), if you have to choose to spend your entertainment dollars on either Spidey or Sparrow, far better to get bitten on the hand than stabbed in the back. For the first time since the first one I felt excited about Spiderman, and it will get a brunt of criticism for attempting to delve into a deeper story line than we have seen. But the action is phenomenal, as usual. What really makes this one the best to me though is the wit, in the first two you would see a scene or two of that, but this film really has it's own sarcastic wit about itself that is fascinating to watch. Characters were more fleshed out, grew more, and developed more so that by the time the loose ends from the first film ended, there were entirely new threads to deal with for the third movie. Needless to say, I had high expectations. I was sorely disappointed. The dialogue was awful. Don't give me comic book cheesy. The first two movies had plenty of comic book cheese that I enjoyed as much as the next person. This movie was just poorly written, poorly thought out. There was no chemistry between Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. To top it all off, the poorly written lines were given even worse delivery by the actors. The Sand Man effects were good, the Venom effects not so much. A complete miscast in Topher Grace for Eddie Brock/Venom. The only two scenes worth anything were: the Bruce Campbell cameo scene. While expected, it was highly amusing, and the very seventies Saturday Night Fever scene where the new "dark" Peter Parker tries to be cool and fails abysmally. And when did "dark and not very good" equate to emo? Everything from the darker, eye covering hair to eye-liner screamed emo punk. With such high expectations and such a big let down, I can't justify giving this movie any score. Expand

Even when he's doing something simple like standing or walking, they used computer graphics for it. I hear people saying the special effects in the movie is amazing. Special effects in movies are suppose to look real and unnoticeable. They're suppose to make you questioned if what you're seeing is the real thing. Spiderman 3 special effects looks too fake and cartoony. It seems like they didn't have time to add in all the little details (shading, marks, flaws, etc.) I understand that Toby is not has well built as before, but at least they can do is find a body double for the full Spiderman suit because the CGI Spiderman is LAME. The certainly good elements were the special effects, the best of the three and some of the best I've ever seen. I was especially blown away with the crane scene. There were parts in which it felt scattered, but the humor I thought was taken up a notch and it felt more like a comic book story with some class. Black and white strong messages, inspiring heroics, exciting action, and engaging drama. My main specific complaints would be, as aforementioned, it was scattered at times. As well, one of the villains needed to be a little stronger, the last fight should have been longer and more climactic, and the ending should have a little bit more story wrapping...such as a wedding or at least his proposal finally happening. Also, venom should have been seen as more evil in the end. I thought the story with Harry was good...but him turning evil, then good, then evil again, seemed a little out of place. But the ending was good Overall, I would say this had the makings of being a good super-hero story ending...and further films may mess it up. However, it may give a chance to make an even better ending. Expand

As a movielover, i dont need corny and cheesy dialogues, or for the fx to overlap the stoyrline, or predictable plots (i really hate that the Sandman was the "killer" of Ben), or an overthrown of supervillains one after the another, I appreciate and I'm thankful (as a movielover) for the popcorn kind of movie -as it allows me (is it all the profits come from the tickets or also from the snacks for a movie that lasts over two hours)-, i appreciate the sometimes well executed comedy (honestly, the scene of the dancin' is, as a lack of a better word, amusing), and some action. The action shots were done too tightly leaving the fights undecernable as apposed to the many wide shots used in previous films so you could actually whatch the action happening. The script was waaaaaay too cheesy (even for a Spider-man film). The villians were used as cheap excuses to add action as opposed to further plot and there were far too many of them. As a result none were developed into their full potential as an actual nemisis (as Vemon was in the comics and the animated series as well as the Green Goblin). By trying to sell to the family audience these charcters end up being side thoughts as opposed to the harrowing evil they were originally. Then there are the overlylong silly sequences (such as a elaborate swing dance section in which it feels as though Mr. Raimi was auditioning for Chicago 2 rather than making a real movie) as well as Bruce Campells return as comedic relief. All in all the movie had some decent parts but Tobey McGuire is not a virsital enough actor, the script was an exercise in silliness, the directing was sloppy and undecernable at times, and nothing was developed enough to make you care about what was happening to the characters. I think this is most important in an era of movies which overloads us with vanilla. You really got a sense of Peter's sensitivities, his hurts, loves, and the dark parts of his soul, mainly his quest for revenge that only only manifest against his uncles killer but also a perceived unrequited love. This isn't to say it forgets I think some negative reviews are OTT. It ain't as perfect as the other 2 films but it's not far off. In terms of action and special effects it's actually the most spectacular of the 3 films. This isn't to say it forgets the human side that made this series what it is. The action (as good as it is) still plays second fiddle to the relationships and troubles of Peter Parker. It's to the writers credit that you find yourself caring more about the personal peoblems of Peter, Mary and Harry then whether Sandman trashes the city. Performances from all main protagonists are solid. Special mention to Thomas Haden Church's understated Sandman and James Franco who excells now that he's given a more substantial role. Any problems with this film seem to lie with the confused direction of Sam Raimi. Half way through Spidey dons the black suit, changes character and goes on a rampage. Things start to get interesting. This is completly spoiled as Raimi goes overboard on the "comedy". The bits with Parker strutting down the street, eyeing up girls and dancing like a cross between john Travolta and David Brent just made me cringe. There's a paradox here and it doesn't work; Is this meant to be a darker Spiderman film (as the pre film hype would have us believe) or a comedy? Is the black Spiderman meant to be nasty and dangerous with attitude or a pervy village idiot? It's as if Raimi wanted to make a darker, grittier Spiderman but chickened out half way through. Another black mark against Yankee Doodle Raimi is yet more shamefully blatent flag waving near the end of the film. Yes, we know Spiderman's American we don't need it shoving in our faces. So, in conclusion this is an entertaining yet flawed film but not as bad as some people say. Expand

Best Spiderman movie ever, was a bit distracting with multiple storylines but it did break opening day and week records so its not that bad i'm sure if a 4th one were to come itd be even better.

I liked it. It was fast paced, but easy to keep up with. Character development was pretty good but could have been much better with some of the new characters to get people who don't already know them up to speed. It's definitely I liked it. Spider-Man 3 wades into cartoony logic, bordering on the style of Asian comedy/action flicks from time to time. It's opening is its weakest point, with the characters acting irrationally or being downright stupid, and the plot setups being completely contrived (the evil black costume literally falls from space, and is never given an origin or motive - it's just a mean little puddle of slime). Once action sequences are great, the humor is refreshing, and computer graphics are beautiful (really - Sandman's first empowered appearance is one of the most beautiful computer effects in the history of film), but the drama is all hammy and silly. Also, with three villains, two love interests and a darkening hero on its hands, the movie has too much material to pace itself properly, leading to a disappointing climax. Fans of the comics should be warned that the beloved Venom isn't done justice, not by the script, not by the terrible actor they cast, and not by whatever genius decided Eddie Brock should sprout pointy teeth when unmasked, and that he should unmask every two minutes. Definitely see this in the theatre, though; it's the best way to appreciate the effects, and to lose yourself in its murky atmosphere. Expand

Ruined the comics, spent to omuch time cramming in Christian morals and principles. Spider Man 2 was able to have its morals and still be an overall achievement.

But that no longer is a big deal in action cinema as all big budget pictures are expected to look spectacular. So we must judge the film on more traditional grounds, such as acting, screenplay, etc., and on these fronts, the film is very uneven. I'm not kidding when I say that the screenplay seems to have been written by Oprah, given the lengthy and numerous outpourings of emotions by the characters, usually done spontaneously and melodramatically such that none of it is really believable. Indeed, at many points I cringed at the sob-fests, and even laughed out loud at others. Really, it's that bad. I don't even want to see Toby Maguire try to "cry" again. Wait for the "bridge scene"; it's camp at its finest. So the acting is out the window. Same can be said for much of the writing, which is undeveloped, used chiefly to keep the plot moving forward, and reveals litle about the deeper thoughts of the characters. This is all quite surprising given the amount of time that the characters actually spend talking. At times they just wouldn't seem to shut up, just babbling on mawkishly about their guilt or fears or the depths of their love, none of which seems seems to much matter to the audience. We hear their pain, but we don't care. We simply don't know the characters well enough. There are too many bad guys, the comedic moments are awkwardly drawn out, Mary-Jane is a self-absorbed whiner who becomes more shrill will every seen, pushing us from feeling indifference to her character to active contempt. The only truly enjoyable performance was by Topher Grace, who genuinely seemed to enjoy his character, and brought great zeal to the role. I look forward to seeing him in future films. As for the rest of the Spider-Man crew, well, I won't be going out of my way to pay them any serious attention. Expand
