Disney and Pixar have struck gold with this animated feature about a struggling musician that finds the secret of life through a literal out-of-body experience. When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I wasn't blown away but after watching it I must say it is not at all what I expected but that is a good thing. Soul is a film that does a lot of things right. It's main character is interesting and gets a decent amount of character development that helps audiences connect with him. The animation is stunning, the supporting cast is superb and the story is deeper than I could have imagined. I love stories that have a purpose and leave its viewers with a lasting effect long after the credits roll and this film certainly accomplishes that. Soul might not be a kids film but it is one of the best animated films of the year by a long shot. Expand

I completely adore Pixar movies, they are always so heartwarming which is what we needed in 2020. The premise is "Joe (Jamie Foxx) is a middle-school band teacher whose life hasn't quite gone the way he expected. His true passion is jazz -- and he's good. But when he travels to another realm to help someone find their passion, he soon discovers what it means to have a soul". So does this warm my "Soul" or send me straight to the Great Beyond,

Firstly, I really love the main characters in this movie. Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx) is a passionate Jazz pianist and music teacher but the struggles that he goes through, on Earth, are things that would resonate with a lot of people in modern times. Joe doesn't want his life to feel meaningless, wants to have that big moment in his life and no regrets. 22 (Tina Fey) is surprisingly not as annoying as trailers might make her up to be. 22 doesn't want to be reborn into Earth as she doesn't have a good view of life. A lot of the jokes she makes mostly land and she is a good contrast to Joe. What's weird is that you emphasise with the slightly optimistic Joe but also the pessimistic 22. Both characters have great character arcs that feel believable and heartwarming.

On that note, this movie tackles some mature themes that are not expected for a family movie. Most of the themes of life's purpose and regrets are something that is prominent in adults, not kids. Yet it is handled wonderfully in this movie so that kids can still enjoy it while resonating with the adults. It's very ambitious with grand ideas and definitely something unique within the Pixar animated movies. The story is also wonderful and entertaining as it is a character-driven story. It also has a very profound yet important message at the end. There are multiple phases and different type of genres within this movie such a drama story, a mystery story and even a buddy cop story halfway through the movie. However, they are all done masterfully and blend together beautifully. Of course, considering its a Pixar movie, visually it is stunning. The real world looks breathtaking and is probably better than real life. There is actually a lot of real-world stuff in the movie which I would say makes 40% of the movie which is not what the trailer would suggest. Additionally, the afterlife world is colorful, vibrant and mesmerizing. The soundtrack is also phenomenal with its jazz compositions in real-world and electronic, orchestral sound for the afterlife. Nevertheless, I do have some issues with the movie. My biggest issue with the movie is the very abrupt ending. It's not a very satisfying ending in my opinion as it leaves with a bit too many questions rather than answers. It feels like the ending is missing some things that were essential to giving a proper resolution. Furthermore, while I, as an adult, love that Pixar went bold with deeper themes, it doesn't feel like kids would get it and the message would just go over the kids head. Overall, the movie is another massive hit from the legendary studio Pixar. It's a captivating journey with gorgeous visuals, a magnificent score, an engrossing story with relatable characters. It's a near-perfect movie that is only slightly ruined by the ending. Soul hits the right emotional core and will no doubt resonate with a majority of the audience. It really was a good movie for my soul.

Soul in my humble opinion is the most imaginative and philosophical movie Pixar has ever made. The journey of selfSoul in my humble opinion is the most imaginative and philosophical movie Pixar has ever made. It delves into the meaning of life, the great Before and After, the purpose of our existence and the spark of our soul. The journey of self discovery is one we must all undertake, some sooner, some later, some never. All this is well addressed in Soul, in a very metaphysical way. Pixar animation just keeps getting better - reflections of lights on the glass panes of pictures, mottled rust on aging metro rail pillars, hazy sunlight filtered through autumn leaves. Just such a delight to watch this bustling realistic world of New York unfold. Soul is probably the most musically authentic of all Pixar movies, diving deep into Jazz and other genres. But at the end the message remains paramount - see the forest beyond the trees, see the ocean beyond the waters. Life isn’t one big moment, it’s lots of little moments, treasure them all. Expand

This is very much a Pixar film and I enjoyed it a lot - it has elements of 'Coco' and 'Inside Out' about it. Funnily enough, yes, I'd recommend this film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a really great Pixar movie. I just wanna start off with that. It has breathtaking visuals, amazing music, and a great cast. Richard Ayoade keeps on being one of the best actors no one seems to recognize. The visual ideas are really inventive and interesting, "The zone" being one of the most creative things I have seen in a film. The montage towards the end of the film made me cry, and is peak Pixar. Pretty much every scene spent in the spirit realm is really great. The scenes on earth is more of a problem. They have a bit of a whiplash effect, after the creativity on display in the spirit realm. Another problem is the weird, essentially tangential part where the protagonist is turned into a cat. I really appreciate that 22 got to be a human, but couldn't she just discover the wonders of the world as a cat? Anyway, I really liked this movie, despite its mistakes. It isn't very funny, which is a bit of a sad trend with modern Pixar, but it is still pretty great. It reminds me of the glory days of pixar, of Ratatouille and Wall-e and Up. I really hope this might usher in other films like that. And also that they stop making movies like Onward. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Soul is an original movie from Pixar proving that the studio isn't yet down crafting stories that tackle ambitious themes. In this movie we see Joe Gardner, voiced by the talented Jamie Foxx, who thinks that he is living a meaningless life and that if he was just able to get his big break his life will finally have purpose. Right after getting his chance do play at a Jazz club with other talented musicians that he thinks will give his life meaning he dies and in trying to return to his life he ends up with an unborn soul named 22, who for thousands of years has been avoiding living. While trying to get Joe back into his body, 22 gets trapped inside of his fleshy prison, while Joe is locked in the form of a cat. Through this new perspective on life, 22 learns to put aside all of her preconceived notions about life on Earth and Joe comes to realization that it's the little things, not your passion, that make life meaningful. We realize that 22 has been avoiding life and is tries to create a disrespectful persona just to disguise her own insecurities with everyone telling her that her life isn't one worth living and through the mentor-ship of Joe she realizes that she is worth it and that life is worth cherishing. This movie is great. Like, really great.

Pros: Pretty much everything expect the story (eg. score, inspiration, etc)

Cons: A little bit of the story.

I honestly would have liked if Joe had gone into the great beyond, and the entire first 2 1/2 minutes of the cat - Joe plot was kind of dumb, but it was overall a outstanding film.

Even though I cannot relate to a lot of things in this movie, like the whole "my entire life's worthless" part, but dear lord even it made be understand that!

a solid 8-9/10. not a masterpiece, but an outstanding film to the other films made in this year.

This was one of my most anticipated films of the year and after reading an abundance of overly positive reviews I started to build very high expectations. For the first time this year all of my expectations were met and some even exceeded. I had forgotten about how undescribable the feeling of watching a truly fantastic Pixar film could be, watching this all the more confirmed that Pixar is undoubtedly my favorite studio in the business. The plot is great it’s an unpredictable and extremely original story. It’s a story that questions every aspect of life while also reassuring the beauty of living life to the fullest. The story is full of unpredictable plot points that creates a engagingly fun tone. There is a few minor flaws with the story the most notable one being that there is a couple negligible plot holes. The pacing is great since it’s such an incredibly fun story there isn’t a single slow or uninteresting moment. The voice acting is fantastic from Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey. I was hesitant at first about how their voices would fit with the characters but I was surprised at how well their voices fit with the personality of Joe Gardener and 22. Both characters are very well crafted characters that will most likely grow to become some of the most memorable Pixar characters. Moonwind, Terry, and the multiple Jerry’s are great supporting characters as well.

The direction is fantastic from Pete Doctor and Kemp Powers, both men are some of the most promising men in Hollywood and through their directorial choices it’s obvious that they wanted to make this film like nothing that had been made before. When it comes to directors of animated films it doesn’t get much better than Pete Doctor. It’s hard to believe that he has never been nominated for Best Director at any of the major awards. The script is fantastic it’s an intelligent and very well layered script full of beautiful pieces of dialogue. The animation is phenomenal it’s realistic animation while also displaying cartoonish looking characters. The score is great it’s a simplistic and memorable score. The humor is fantastic this film is full of hilarious jokes, gags, and one liners. From watching the trailers the main thing I was worried about was that the humor would be dry but I was honestly surprised at how many times I was laughing. What always impresses me with (most) Pixar films is that they near perfectly balance genuinely hilarious humor and intense yet soft emotion. In terms of the Oscars I feel this film will definitely win Best Animated Feature and possibly (hopefully) get a nomination for Best Picture. Also I could definitely see this film getting a nomination for Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Score. The ending is a completely satisfying ending that leaves you to infer what happens next with the characters. Overall Soul is an extraordinarily emotional and incredibly well made film that will truly be considered an animated classic in the future. 94% A

Some people have told me: ''Pixar never disappoints''.
And I don't know about them, but for me they have, but Pixar has also produced superb classics in animation.
Fortunately Soul will fall into that category.

Soul takes a similar approach to what the studio did on Inside Out, but let's say that here it takes you to the origin source.
Everything is a metaphor of course, but the intuitive and captivating is what elevates this story.

It could hardly be classified as a kid's film, because although they will be able to enjoy it of course, what makes this film special can only be appreciated by a more mature audience.

A huge pity the film didn't get a theater release, because I would've loved to have seen it on the big screen, but that's water under the bridge, the film has been released worldwide now, and it's a wonderful adventure that I can recommend to everyone.

It is a more adult surreal version of Inside Out. Some of the animation is beautiful and abstract concepts are lovingly visualised, the whole movie has some excellent artwork. The Atmos soundtrack is also really well done, especially during the Beyond parts of the film. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This is a huge step up in quality from Pixar’s previous film Onward from last year. For reference, I gave Onward a 5/10. Soul has probably the most gorgeous animation in a Pixar film and I know saying that good animation in a Pixar film is like saying water is wet but I really wanted to highlight it here because it’s incredibly gorgeous. The way Pete Docter and the animators incorporate different colors and shots for both the spirit world and New York is beyond amazing. Some might be glad to know that this film doesn’t feel like Inside Out 2 like most were predicting. They only spend maybe 1/4 or 1/3 of the movie in the spirit world and I really enjoyed a lot of the metaphysical jokes they made and the art style of it. It distinguished itself from Inside Out by doing this. The story and themes here are captivating. We learn through Jamie Foxx’s character Joe that we need to slow down and not devout ourselves to only one idea or else we will get stuck in that pit never get out. There is also a lot about our purpose and what we should do with our life which is represented through Tina Fey’s character 22. It’s surprising at how mature these themes are even for a film that is geared towards a younger audience. I have to talk about the music too because it’s great. Scratch that, it’s incredible. It’s almost all jazz music and it fits the themes and tones of the film perfectly. You couldn’t ask for a better score than this. My issues with the film are with its ending and one performance; Graham Norton. I think Norton is a fine talk show host but it was distracting whenever he was on screen here. They probably should have cast somebody else because his performance was average at best compared to the great performances from Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey. The ending of this film is a little bit abrupt and a tad underwhelming. We get this absolutely incredible Jazz section with Joe reflecting on life before it takes us to a more normal ending and I kinda wish the film had been resolved in a better way. I still think the ending is good but it could have been better. If you enjoy Pixar movies or just animated movies in general then I would highly recommend this. Expand

Trying to give meaning to questions that we all ask ourselves and that mainstream animation rarely addresses, this time we leave behind the interior of our emotions, the nostalgia of a past life or the desolate future of humanity. Now PIXAR dares to focus on a theme that had been eating away at it since Up, Toy Story 3 and Onward; death. It specifically talks about souls, but this is only a vector, a spirit-shaped path that takes us to the beyond to really tell us about something more frugal and constructive: life!

Once again the house of the lamp is mastered with the power of metaphor and Pete Docter dares to give us his conclusion to that thoughts that some of us have been chewing on all our lives without giving it any resolution. Visually, it embraces the poetic style of Inside-Out adapted to the celestial context, you'll discover a palette of secondary characters as intriguing as they are surprising, and I have to say that the quality of the animation is so sublime, dense and rich in micro-expressions that one can no longer speak of technical mastery but of pure kinesic art.
I can't forget about the other protagonist, The JAZZ. His notes are not only for the delight of our ears but also are used to deconstruct the traditional scheme of the story and take us on multiple journeys full of comings and goings but with different tints that only the union of our five senses can capture.

For those who feared Pixar's Disney-like drift, Soul seems to be saying that even as time passes and people change, Luxo Jr's jumping and curious spirit is still present.
Pete Docter is a genius who is not aware that he is.

With the release of Soul, I can confidently say that Pixar has made me cry more times than any other film production company.

Soul is a beautiful movie about a man named Joe who wants nothing more in life than to be a professional Jazz musician. After getting the opportunity of a lifetime, he does not feel the same way about it and questions his own existence. Joe then, unexpectedly, has an out-of-body experience that allows him to explore answers to many of life's questions about our body, soul, and if we have a purpose in life. Along with his new pal 22, they must try to get back to earth but not without first finding their purpose. Joe is a charismatic man who is such a relatable character; you connect with him right away. His new friend, 22, is a funny free-spirited character, and the two make for a great duo with contrasting ideologies about how to live life.

Joe and 22 have an interesting journey in the film as Joe gets to see someone else live his life, and through this experience, Joe realizes that there is no exact formula to living life, and it's about the adventure, not the final result.

Peter Docter returns to the director's chair to make you cry for the millionth time. Peter and Pixar seem to understand their audiences are not children anymore as the stories evolve with each film release. This understanding has allowed them to tackle very heavy questions about life, death, and our existence; more so than any other film I have ever watched.

The script is beautifully written and is full of so many new unique inspirational quotes that just make you question life and your own decisions you have made. Atticus Ross, Jon Batiste, and Trent Reznor put together a gorgeous soundtrack that takes you on an emotional rollercoaster that compliments every aspect of the film.

Soul is one of the best movies to come out of 2020 by far. It delivers such a powerful perspective on life and how we live it. Anyone who is a practicing artist, or has dedicated much of their life to a goal, should relate to these feelings of self-doubt that Joe goes through in the film.

Sometimes you just have to live your life, have fun, and enjoy the ride. We all know life gets crazy and hectic, and are all guilty of letting it take control. We are so blessed to be living right now, and we often forget what it is like to look up at the stars, or to take in the wonderful scent of a flower, or getting lost in a beautiful song. Life is made up of small moments and as Joe says " I'm going to live every minute of it".

Although it deals with issues that for some may be distressing, the film knows how to iron and entertain at the right time and in the right way.
Soundtracks are definitely an important element of, using a film expression, "getting into the bubble". However, they do not particularly stand out from those composed for other feature films in this period.
In addition, the New York reconstructed in the film is extremely interesting and curated, from the crowds, to the stalls, passing through the shops. Therefore noteworthy scenographies, enhanced by a warm and relaxing, soft, soft and delicate photography.

I'm glad I watched it a second time because I like it even more now. This movie definitely feels more aimed at adults, although kids can enjoy it too, but they won't understand the themes until they grow old and have similar experiences that the movie depicts. Soul is once again another great original PIXAR film. I was really excited for this one because it showcased jazz which is one of my favorite music genres. After I watched it for the first time, I just had to sit and think for about ten minutes about my life and how I was spending it. This movie, though being deep in its themes, is very uplifting and also really funny, which I wasn't expecting. The animation is top-notch and very impressive. I especially loved the jazz sequences because I could tell that the musicians were in fact playing the right notes which blew my mind. The afterlife sequences in this movie were good but it really reminded me of Inside Out. I also really love the character design, especially for the "Jerry's". Soul really surprised me. As a story, it works really well. If I had a big gripe with the movie I would say that I wish that they wouldn't sacrifice some emotional moments with jokes, which happened on a couple of occasions. I don't know if this will be considered a PIXAR classic within the coming years, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. Expand

However, for the questions it doesn't answer and -- more importantly -- for the risky, wallop-packing creative choices it clearly skirts past, I'm left feeling a little bit more than remiss. In any case, the animation is Pixar's best to date (I feel like I'm reiterating that with every new release from the studio) and the voice cast perform their absolute hearts out. I simply wish this was the absolute emotional thrill ride it appeared it was going to be, instead of what it actually is -- an earnest and creative endeavor, but one with a serious second act dip and a dishearteningly safe wrap-up. Overall a good movie. It is a bit too out-there for my taste though, but I still enjoyed it.

The great beyond and before seemed a bit too silly for my taste. The concepts of it all didn't really click too well for me. I struggled to keep track of the various different soul states and ways to enter the realms they are contained within. It felt like they had expanded their ideas too far when designing the movie. They did a lot better with that in Inside Out, which was brilliant!

I also felt that the movie struggles to deliver its message. Not that movies always need a message, but it clearly tries to deliver one.
But I was quite in doubt about what that message was when the movie ended. Should I give up my dreams and just sit and look at leaves falling from the trees all day? Was that the message? I'm not sure. But it was something along those lines. Or maybe it was about being less focused on yourself. That also makes sense I believe.

I quite liked that the movie doesn't really have any clear-cut bad guys. The antagonist is more like a soul thing. An inner struggle I guess you could say. Which I found interesting.

It's an endearing and lovable movie, it has most of those Pixar'y things that we've come to love. So it's absolutely worth a watch! But it didn't make me choke up the way Pixar movies otherwise ALWAYS seem to do. So I did feel like it was missing a few of the magic Pixar ingredients.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Some time around the late 2000s, Pixar Animation Studios ceased to be the "can't do no wrong" auteurs that produced thought-provoking hits after hits. Somewhere along the line, it lost its soul and was reduced to being just another movie studio. And so, the world watched as we awaited the day when Pixar returns to form. Perhaps it's due to this vigilance that imbues in us an extra layer of stringency in our criticisms.

Ironically, the protagonist of Soul, Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx), is very much like Pixar studios. He recognizes the craft, he knows it like the back of his hand, but he doesn't really understand the inner beauty of the music, the soul of jazz that embraces someone with the joys of life. He's too caught up in the technicality of the craft, too focused on textbook methods that make jazz function properly.

That's what Pixar movies have been for the past decade, and even now in 2020, it's my opinion that Pixar hasn't returned to its peak yet. That cat comedy schtick, man, it really took away from what could've been the movie of my dreams, the one that I envisioned when I first watched the teaser to the film and what potential it could have as a story. But instead, we get fairly generic comedy routines stagnating the middle parts of the film instead of focusing on Joe and 22 (Tina Fey)'s enjoyment of everyday life. I wouldn't mind watching an entire arc of that stuff. Act 2 of the film just wasn't as potent as it should be due to its reliance on tired comedy routines when it could've just been an entire slice-of-life sequence celebrating the mundanities of "regular ol' living."

But then comes Act 3, the final part of our tale, when Joe realizes what he has missed out or possibly forgotten in life, those very simple joys we take for granted: a new haircut, company with your dad, enjoying the morning breeze on a bike, sunrise, fireworks… and of course, the joy of opening a student's eyes to the wonders of life. You start to see during the final parts of the film what it should've been all along. You start to see what it could've been.

And if that's not tragic enough, I didn't really like the final scene either. I feel like a stronger ending would've been Joe being led to his teaching career again, bookending the story with where he started as he learns to appreciate the simple things. As it is, the movie just feels unfinished, like an unpolished draft.

To be clear, I think that 70% of the movie was well done. If you just cut out that 30% of comedy filler and focused more on building the atmosphere as Joe and 22 ride through the joys (and perhaps even the pains) of life, that would've been a stronger story. As it is, it's just another animated movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Soul is the latest new original Pixar Movie after a bad start with Onward after a series of sequels. How does Soul stand up? Really good! Now its not perfect, it does have issue such as the Joe and 22 Body switch with 22 in Joe's body and Joe in his cat's body has been done to death so many times and honestly it was hard for me to watch at that point because I was kinda uncomfortable watching stuff like 22 (as Joe) eating Pizza in a allyway or trying to be Joe, it just was super cringy. That and New York as a location has been done so many times. With That said, Soul is still a very powerful movie. The message about earth having something to offer everyone is relatable for anyone, the jazz elements make the film feel more grand, the ending where Joe gives up his chance to go back to earth to 22 was just wholesome and he got to go back to earth anyways, and it should a lot of relatable elements like wanting to impress our parents, and following our passions. Soul although as issues I addressed at the beginning of this review, is still a very strong, emotional film. Does it stand against the OG Pixar films? No but its a very good film and I recommend it. One thing that probably stopped me thoroughly enjoying this is the animation and character design, particularly when in the "Great Beyond". It's not that it looks bad, or anything close, but I just found it a bit too plain. I never felt attached to any of the characters or settings there. I did, though, enjoy the sounds and music, especially in the aforementioned afterlife area. They do do that nicely.

It's definitely a good film and one with a nice and honourable message, I just needed that something extra to enjoy it more personally.

While the underprivileged are enjoying their little slice of street corner pizza, the rich are savoring their $400 caviar in a pen-house on 40th floor; while the underprivileged are feeling the ocean sweeping over their feet on a disgusting public beach, the rich are sailing on a yacht more expensive than their entire home. Do you see it now? And this movie is telling the poor to just "watch the leaf fall" while their life-hood is quietly and slowly stolen away from them. This is so f*&k up.

We are NOT living in a society where equal effort warrants equal returns and the disparity of wealth is so staggering that fundamental systematic change is required immediately. This is NOT a time to ask people to "enjoy the little things", this is a time to ask people to make a difference, regardless what your role is in this society.

This is such a feel-good movie for lower-middle-class white people when the heroes of the movie - the black/brown communities are actually trying to make their ends meet every, single, day. So f*&k Pete Doctor and Pixar, for trying to teach black people how to live their lives and find their purpose.

The notable lack of sound design gives the movie an awkward feel, understandable since it probably had to be done in quarantine but a problem none the less. There is also a lot I feel hurts the overall narrative of the film, most notably a scene early on that calls into question the ticking clock element of the story.

A lot of fun none the less and I expect that I will get more out of it upon a rewatch.

Something lacks, but overall it's pretty fun. Music is the best part, the animation amazing as always, but the story... well, it is great but could be better.

A good movie, after the year I'm sure we've all had, the message here is a great and important one. Pixar never seem to miss.

For children it is difficult for them to understand, but for adults it is a simple movie in which there is nothing new

The movie has great world building and likable characters you’ll get attached to throughout the film. I’d argue this movie is more geared towards adults as is deals with some dark themes such as death and ones meaning in life. And don’t worry, it’s not a movie about blue blobs, most of the movie takes place on Earth. If you decide to sit down and watch it, you’ll have a fun time. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really like Jamie Foxx and Richard Ayoade, so I was looking forward to Soul. Foxx is great, but Ayoade is unfortunately there for like 2 minutes in total. I don't think Tina Fey did a great job in this one. Graham Norton was ok for someone who is not a professional actor.

Animation is great, soundtrack is good, but the story is a little hard to follow sometimes and there are some things that I feel were left unanswered, like what happened to cat's soul, or who was that Lisa character. Overall, like most of the recent Pixar movies, I got a feeling that this is a movie that tries a little too hard. It was a godd one-time experience for me, but don't think I'll ever get a desire to watch it again, like I get with WALL-E, first Incredibles or Inside Out.

Not because anything was too ambitious or deep, it was more how disjointed the story seemed to be between the living world and spirit world. I don't want to ruin anything but there are things that happen that flat out made zero sense and had my head scratching, especially in the last quarter of the movie. Also when the cat thing happened I was kinda like....I guess that has to be for the children because that route made way less sense to me than a fusion situation, where they were BOTH operating. It's one of those you have to just accept it's a fictional movie kind of deals.

I really enjoyed most of the characters a lot. Terry was my biggest gripe character-wise. I get you aren't supposed to like him and he's arguably the only antagonist if there is one, but he was just a means to an end obviously. I just felt like there was a struggle to connect the two realms to further the story in the writers room. There was a lot of hurrying things along near the end.

Overall a good movie that conveys a message about how our desire to seek purpose (and how those purposes can become obsessions) can take away from really "living" life. Just missed the mark a bit in the writers room.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A huge step forward for Disney who continues to extend the cultural variety and diversity of its characters. This time we follow an old black man whose passion is jazz. Everything is far from being perfect in his daily life, especially the day he comes to die by accident. The story really begins at this point. I think this is truly ingenious and even thought it was going to be a far more interesting movie than I expected. Following a man in his fifties is awesome. Following a man struggling with life but who realizes that it could be worse is great. Following a man who dies by being not enough focus in the streets is promising. Following a man trying to make a living from music is profound.

Soundtrack is as great as the animation. Pace in general is a bit weird with two serious slow and sleepy parts. Scenario was awesome at some point but ends up getting all messed up...

The rest of the story we follow Joe Gardner's soul in heaven who obviously wants to come back to Earth as soon as possible. He comes up to encounter some disruptive elements allowing the movie to take a huge funny yet unnecessary journey to make the kids laugh because in overall this movie is really hard to understand for them. For example, creatures living in heaven are just human concept ideas and are wierdly represented. Without speaking about a particular religion this movie however question their existence and especially asks the question of life after death (and life before life).

The ending is what made me lower the score so much. You don't die from nothing. Dying by accident doesn't make your death funnier, easier for your friends and family, less unexpected or even reversible. The major flaw of this movie is that it sweetens the reality of life too much. What would you have thought if Bambi's mother or Simba's father had woken up as if nothing had happened after being mortally wounded? Or the queen in 'White Snow'? Or Synndrome in 'The Incredibles'? 'Soul', in its core-story, is way too close to reality to allow itself to take death lightly. The fact it came out during COVID should have make the directors think more about it. If you want to sell dreams, sell real dreams, if you want to get closer to daily life, do it. But don't get piteously stuck in between. There were some truly attractive points in 'Soul' but when you consider it as a whole you easily realize it is falling into pieces.

Truly complicated questions can't be simply answered

Pixar has always been my favorite animation studio (along with Ghibli) and today I was lucky to watch "Soul" in a movie theatre: I can't say that I did not like "Soul", but it has a number of problems, which makes the overenthusiastic reviews from critics seem unjustified to me.

"Soul" touches upon complicated philosophical issues (the issues of life and death, as well as the search for purpose and meaning of one's own existence), which, I felt like, are too difficult not only for children who will probably fall asleep in the cinema, but also for the authors themselves, who seemed to be confused, trying to understand what they want to tell the audience in the end.

The answers and solutions to the (insoluble) existential questions offered by "Soul" seem to me somewhat unsatisfactory. Digging deeper than commercial animation filmmakers usually do, Pixar's scriptwriters have reached a level where any attempt to answer a question clearly and unequivocally, will look naive.

In "Soul" there is A LOT of things that can get more and more confusing the more you think about logic of the world created by Pixar, but it gets even more embarassing when you realise what it lacks: for example, themes of love and loneliness, past which the storyline deftly maneuvers. It's difficult for me to agree with the formula "love of life" = "the ability to enjoy little things and what we call "routine"" (A slice of pizza? Riding a bike?) = "happy life." I think this formula obviously lacks at least love, friendship and a sense of belonging to something greater than one's self.

It's possible (and sometimes even useful) to speak simply about such complex things with adults and children, but to claim to be true in this case means to impose a point of view and even show a share of ignorance, leveling thousands of years of the history of the development of existential philosophy.

However, it's still a unique and enjoyable animated film that was fun for me to watch. I think it is better to stay at this level of perception and not try to unravel the tangle, which neither Nietzsche, nor Sartre, nor Kierkegaard, nor the authors of "Soul" managed to do successfully.
