The whole movie was a thrill from the start to the end, an I was really happy with the story taking a different approach on Star Wars this time getting more into the crime underground which I loved and wanna see more of that aspect of Star Wars. For the characters I think the actors did an amazing job capturing the charm especially Alden Ehrenreich who did a great job portraying Han in the movie. Obviously said my many others this is no masterpiece of a film but do I think you should see it? Yes I absolutely think that this movie is something that any fan of Star Wars should definitively see! This movie is a wonderful love-letter to the original trilogy of Star Wars. Watching the origins of Solo and Chewie was a true joy. I cannot wait to see what they will do with this new series.

So, Disney made a movie for children. Nothing wrong with that. Alas, since I'm not a child I would not recommend this to adults.

I'm so glad I took his advice because I ended up loving this movie! I was entertained from beginning to end and found it really interesting and cleverly done regarding answering basic questions (history of Chewbacca, melenium falcon, etc). I walked out of the theater feeling like this Star wars was right up there with Rogue One and am still baffled as to why so many people don't like it. I thought the actors who played Solo and Lando did phenomenal jobs and very quickly lost myself in the movie and had no problem linking those actors with those characters. For me personally, I thoroughlly enjoyed this movie and will even say I look forward to watching it again in the future which is extremely rare for me to feel that way. Expand

Everybody does bad things but they're not bad, just people trying to survive & has their good side (like in real life). It has a good persecution sequence at the beginning and some parts of the movie are exciting; you feel the aventure and the great universe of Star Wars, but sometimes it's seems to be insipid and without soul. It's fine to watch how Solo and Chewie meet for the first time. Weak villain, Paul Bettany (Dryden Vos. Alden Ehrenreich (Han Solo), Donald Glover (Lando Calrissian) are good characters in general, Emilia Clarke (Qi'ra), Woody Harrelson (Beckett) and Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca) do their part; some characters of this universe are pretty untapped, i hope for the next Boba Fett spin-off they have a good homage and fix well so that this universe is finished. The OST is not bad. Star Wars is not only Jedi, Sith and The Force. Expand

Of course it's a trip to watch our protagonists stand up against seemingly impossible scenarios, but I start to disconnect when one unstoppable CGI machine stands up to a slightly more stoppable CGI machine, defeating its opponent and leveling one of our major cities in the process (though the massive civilian death toll always seems to somehow be avoided, or at least not carry enough weight to merit discussion). The action and adventure genre is generally designed for escapism, a chance for the audience to forget about life's little cuts and bruises.

Solo: A Star Wars Story delivers on such escapism. Little background is necessary for the title character, a fact respected by Ron Howard as his film launches us straight into Han's peril. We know exactly what we need to know: Han is in trouble and needs to escape. A curveball is thrown when we meet Emilia Clarke's Qi'ra, Han's apparent love interest in his former life. There is no plot to save the galaxy or to avenge some unknown character's demise; Han simply wants to create a better life for himself and Qi'ra. While not particularly ambitious in scope or storytelling, Solo focuses on the same elements that drive A New Hope into the hearts of its fans: fun, engaging entertainment via a simple but original story about some complex but ultimately relatable and lovable characters. Howard's addition to the Star Wars universe succeeds due to its respect for the title character. The prequels prove that changing existing characters' personalities can be disastrous. The sequels often rely on regression and nostalgia, not just in humor or imagery but in story itself, which makes it hard for a viewer to view the most recent story as anything but a callback to the original films. Let's face it: anyone who experienced Luke, Han, and Leia's adventures at a young age cannot accept any major changes to these characters, but it can also be insulting to long-time fans to introduce new characters that end up shadowing the original adventures a little too closely. In a universe as developed as the Star Wars universe, a balancing act between originality and familiarity, is tricky but all too important. A new installment, especially a film about early adventures through the eyes of one of the most developed characters in the Star Wars universe, needs enough stakes to engage the audience but not enough impact to make the audience question "Why did Han not talk about these crazy adventures in the later films?"

Solo makes no effort to change Han's ambitions, background, or general character traits. This film is clearly not designed to challenge its audience's beliefs or cause them to consider Star Wars in a new way. Solo takes us on an adventure that features both some of the new and some of the old, and, while it breaks no new ground for the Star Wars franchise, the film allows us to have fun with our beloved Han Solo without any greater implications for the galaxy for the first time.

I was one of those Star War Fans that said you couldn't replace Harrison Ford and believed they got the casting wrong. But Alden did an amazing performance. it felt like Han Solo at the beginning of his story, that you can see what he goes through and after another 10 years how he will be the Han Solo we see in A new Hope. Lots of people complaining about how dark (the lighting not the story) is in this movie and i didn't notice it. If thats the biggest criticism everyone has then they really digging to find something wrong. The droid L3, i found was just yelling all the time. Very angry and her mission to free all droids didnt fit. But i want 2 move spin offs . There's a lot more i would like to see from this cast

I thought the performances of Han Solo, Lando, Qi'ra, and Beckett were all good. Ehrenreich did a particularly good job of capturing Han's swagger. Dryden Vos was a typically cliché villain but was adequate. Even at more than two hours, there was no fat in this movie, no wasted scenes. The action constantly moved forward and there was never a dull moment. Maybe people were disappointed that the story wasn't epic enough? This was Han Solo's life before Luke Skywalker, he was an outlaw and a smuggler. The story suited him perfectly. I also enjoyed the full story behind how he won the Millennium Falcon. Since that unfortunate cleansing Star WarsThis is the best Star Wars movie that Disney has made so far and let me tell you why: I am a long time Star Wars fan that enjoyed the Expanded Universe stuff before it was wiped out by Disney. Since that unfortunate cleansing Star Wars hasn't felt like Star Wars anymore. The sequel movies are weird because the feature character I know (or thought I knew) and they have the Force and familiar looking fighters and spaceships, nothing else is familiar. All of the planets are new. None of the 100s of aliens from the previous movies are seen in the background. None of the history is there except only stuff from the previous Lucas movies. Rogue One was a little better but only because it took place in a familiar time period during the rebellion right before A New Hope. It was almost like this was a whole different universe with The Force, X-wings and Death Stars thrown in.
Well, Solo finally has me hopeful for the future of these movies. This is the universe that I have been falling in love with since the mid 90s with the comics, novels and video games. You finally get to see on the big silver screen tons of things that you only could read about or at best see in a cartoon. The planets are all familiar, ranging from Corellia to Kessel. There are even mentions of legendary places like Coronet City and Carida Academy. Decades old EU material is finally brought into the new canon like CorSec, Corellian Hounds and so much more. Then there are even the connections to the Clone Wars cartoon like Mimban, the Pyke Syndicate and yes... even Darth freakin Maul. This is the Star Wars I know. I was surprised how much of this movie I loved that kept me smiling. I have a feeling once more people get to catch this movie after it leaves theaters that it will grow in popularity after the hate dies down.

[SPOILER FREE]

I don't know what happened, but I think that Harrison Ford wrote Han Solo's character more than George Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan. I expected better given that this was a Kasdan script. Except this totally missed the mark. Clearly he didn't understand Han Solo.

Chewie was the best he's ever been, which is what got this a +1. Lando was solid. The extra cast varied from charming to predictable. Woody Harrelson was playing Woody Harrelson, in a Woody Harrelson role. I don't know why the droids need to steal the spotlight.

This was the least Han Solo that a Han Solo story could be. It adds NOTHING to the history of Han, nor the Star Wars universe. This literally could have been an off cast story akin to Rogue One and would be just as OK. This is the reason for the low score. It would have been two points higher if it WEREN'T a Han Solo film.

Ron Howard made this watchable. If it weren't for him, it might have been a one, or a two. You can clearly see where the two films diverge. It's like getting smacked in the face tonally by how jarring it changes. I feel really sorry for the cast, but this movie should have been dropped rather than try to salvage.

Turns out, this is the best of the bunch - I haven't enjoyed a star wars movie as much since the originals. The actors were perfect - great casting and acting throughout, the scenery and cgi were breathtaking and the score was finally something new for star wars.

I think what sold me on the story was that there was some actual real character development going on, and it left me wanting to know more about how the story continues.

I'm not quite sure what went wrong. Of course there's the re-shoot, actors in a disarray and directing issues, but what else caused such a cluster screw up of a movie to be made? Especially a movie within the Star Wars universe. I'm not quite sure what Disney is going to do with the Star Wars IP going forward, but I hope after memorial day weekend and the lack luster attendance for a Star Wars film. After all my relationship with Star Wars now is akin to that of a domestic abuse victim; I love it and I can see its good points, but it keeps beating the **** out of me, abusing me, and generally making me question my self-worth. I am happy to report that for 2 hours and 15 minutes I was completely, wholly entertained. Surprisingly it took me less time to adapt to Alden Ehrenreich as young Han than it did for me to accept Liam McIntyre as a replacement for Andy Whitfield in the incredible Starz TV series Spartacus, another of my favorite movies, and I've met Liam and know him to be a delightful person. Perhaps it was because the opening focuses on a very young Han on the streets of Corellia and Howard ensured that Ehrenreich looked appropriately young. It helped create the illusion that Han could have looked like this fugly kid when he was a snot-nosed brat tween, which eased the transition into accepting Ehrenreich as Han in his late teens/early 20s when the rest of the film took place. By the end of the movie I felt like Ehrenreich did a good job, something I never imagined I'd actually put into writing or speak aloud. I still would have preferred a different actor, one who physically resembled Harrison Ford more, but you know what? Ehrenreich nailed Han's mannerisms and that did more to make him Han than anything else. It is clear that the acting coach on set with him did more than help Alden speak his lines, he must have helped him ape Ford's classic portrayal. With that concern out of the way I went on to enjoy the hell out of the opening scenes. Another concern of mine, Emilia Clarke, was also well-de-aged and perfectly believable. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to see her as any other than the iconic Mother of Dragons, despite my ease in accepting her as a scrappy new Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys. It was a silly concern, as it turns out, she did great as Qi'ra (Kira,) Han's childhood friend and early love interest. The whole opening act had a Schindler's List kind-or vibe, portraying a world-under-occupation fairly well and I wound up instantly drawn into the film, even when the appearance of one Lady Proxima didn't really jive with what I was envisioning.

The movie, masterfully written by Lawrence Kasdan, kept many parts of Han's early lore; his time as an Imperial Naval Cadet and meeting and rescuing Chewbacca, and it introduced one of my new favorite Star Wars characters; Tobias Beckett, played perfectly by Woody Harrelson in what has to be my favorite of his roles. I loved Beckett. He was a joy every moment he was on screen, a perfect rogue. He's the kind of Star Wars character we all want to play if we can't choose a Jedi. In short he was Han Solo before Han was Han Solo. Beckett has his own crew and they are interesting and well-portrayed. I found myself rooting to Han to get into this criminal band of outlaws, despite their unsavory connections to a shadowy organization known as the Crimson Dawn, which makes one recall the Black Sun Syndicate from Shadows of the Empire.

Unless the technology emerges to put Billy D. Williams in a time machine and physically make him younger there could not have been a better casting for young Lando than Donald Glover. Charming, witty, confident... he nailed everything about the character to a tee... and he looks like him to boot! His companion, sassy, annoying, yet not-that-bad droid L3 was played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge doing her very best Gwendoline Christie impersonation. L3 grated just a little; as if Waller-Bridge was trying to channel Christie into the body of K2-S0, and her only true defining characteristic was that of a droid-rights social justice warrior. If Dryden Voss was the random officer that Darth Vader choked, L3 was more of a Salacious Crumb: not quite annoying enough to be Jar Jar but just irritating enough to be a bit of a relief when she was off screen.

The whole Kessel Run was not what I was expecting either. Most of the pre-Disney literature marked it as a race but the event, as portrayed in the movie, was part of a bigger plot. It worked, it worked pretty well. The Spice Mines themselves were afflicted by a bit of deus-ex-machina but it wasn't that bad, and was largely redeemed by the presence of Chewbacca. Interestingly Kessel and the mines looked exactly as they were portrayed in Rebels, so that was a very nice touch for the fans like me who have devoured all of Star Wars filmography, including the excellent animation.

The movie's final act was FULL of both fan service and sly action and I can say nothing less than I loved it. Let me tell you two things about it: First off if you have not watched the Clone Wars or Rebels... shame on you. You only have yourself to blame for your confusion. Prepare to have your mind blown. And finally, the only semi-spoiler I will give you: Han Shot First.

If you've watched IV - VI, you know all about the things Solo does in this film, leaving viewers at times disinterested and even bored. Will Solo make the Kessel run? Will Solo make friends with a wookie? Will Solo end up with Qi'ra? Will Solo win the Falcon from Lando? Literally every plot point has predictable outcomes and the film suffers for it.
That said, the movie has some redeeming qualities. The acting across all fronts is superb. The dialogue is strong with characters really playing their parts well. And even though there are pretty much no surprises. solo still can be an incredibly fun film to watch as we see a young Han turning into the Solo we all know and love.

The cast was spot-on, especially Donald Glover who played Lando Calrissian. You could not have asked for a better performance. Just a seriously good movie overall, would go to theaters to see it a second time. Lots of unexpected twists, and a lot of good action. The most important though, is that everything made sense and the plot/scenes felt wholly conjoined. I never once thought that anything felt disconnected or didn't make sense. The only thing that pushed it down to an 8 for me was Emilia Clarke who played Kira, Hans girlfriend, who is one of the main characters in the movie. Thought they could have done a better job with her overall story, so for that I can't give it more than an 8. Great movie, great acting. Would definitely recommend if you like star wars.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite the negative hype and thoughts viewers had before the movie even came out, Solo was actually not half bad. Solo provides a thrill ride in a galaxy far far away, and an adventure that ain't quite too serious, but still plenty of fun. The characters are entertaining and interesting, the action scenes are breath taking and mind blowing, and the movie packs in as much of the good old Star Wars nostalgia and Easter eggs too. And for the viewers who missed out on this little Star Wars movie, probably missed out on a great origin story, and probably even the greatest twist in a Star Wars movie: the return of Darth Maul! I wanted to weigh in on this cuz I think this movie is getting a bad rep cuz it didn't make projected bux when first dropped. Not sure why..but maybe by dropping on Memorial Weekend people were out doing stuff -outside- instead of being in theatre. As a result..after 3 days!..box office gurus are saying it's a bomb (relative to budget)..word gets around and suddenly it's labeled a FLOP..and no one goes to see it thinking it must be bad. Long story -short: it's NOT..matter of fact IMO it's pretty damm good..not perfec..but of all the FOUR Disney/Star Wars films I had he most fun at this. Rogue One was good too but (obviously) a downer..and it doesn't look like there's any room for sequel there (cuz..they all died)

Maybe the real reason SOLO didn't have everyone rush out was cuz -again IMO- Episodes 7&8 were such stinking trash that people didn't wanna get burned by Disney again. That's too bad cuz if SOLO is considered a bomb then they wont wanna make more movies about Han&Chewy..and truthfully, it's about the ONLY thing I'd wanna see from Disney/SW at all. I have NO DESIRE WHATSOEVER to see anymore ForceAwakens/LastJedi crap.

Just a pretty entertaining action movie if you're familiar with the whole SW setting. If you're not that into SW then a 6 is generous enough. Too many things in the story that just didn't add up. Solo sets itself up to be quite pointless - showing the history of a character we know all about, showing some of his feats that once again we know about (Kessel run for example).

In reality though, it's a really fun movie. It doesn't add a great deal of detail to the character, with events kicking off around the time he's already a cocky, self centered nerf herder - but it still delivers a lot of charm, character and easter eggs to keep any Star Wars fan happy. Whilst the infamous Kessel run plays a part towards the end of the film, it acts very much like a side element to their current mission and not this huge focus of the film, meaning you get to enjoy the action unfold without the worry about them pushing old references into your eyes.

The performances were great! Admittedly it did take me a couple of scenes to embrace Han, he's a special character and this is the first time we're seeing him played by someone other than Ford (outside of voice acting across various mediums) and Ehrenreich does great in the role. Donald Glover nails Lando, and around them the rest of the supporting cast make for some interesting dynamics and great set pieces.

There is 1 character who shows up that feels a bit too "on the nose" in terms of the current state of PC cinema, in reality if they were portrayed by a male it would have actually made a lot more sense and been genuinely very clever all at the same time (a film that already shows some very strong female characters, in a franchise dedicated to strong female characters it was a shame to have a parody of the "me too" movement portrayed on screen without any sense of irony)...

The story itself whilst quite simplistic at times has surprising depth when it comes to the small (but predictable) twists and turns it weaves through to the end, with some excellent references, easter eggs and cameos that I hope to see built upon in future instalments of Star Wars.

All in all I'd recommend this to any Star Wars fan, in a worst case you'll likely come out of the film thinking "well that was ok" but I think most true fans will get very excited about the easter eggs that tease what the future may hold for a young Solo, or other related movies...

IfOne of the classic Star Wars icons now just got his own movie, set to answer whatever questions you seldom asked such as, “How did he meet Chewbacca?” What else do we learn about old Han Solo in his backstory? Well… not a whole lot else. If anything, longtime fans could enjoy a climactic nostalgic cameo towards the end, even if it skews the Star Wars prequel timeline. Ultimately, Solo: A Star Wars Story thrills enough, yet after thinking deeper, you will most likely say, “meh, now I can say I’ve seen it.”
Although technical scale still delivers; right away, a brief sequence insinuates a chaotic battleground ambience while Han is caught in the army. Of all breathtaking showcases this film features, I found most memorable an instance when the Millennium Falcon fell into a huge gravity well, home to a bigger than life creature; surround sound in full IMAX 3D terror. Technical prowess enhances the quieter moments too: a point during act three mimics a classic Western showdown without much surround sound to mark Han’s peak… I’d say it even looks far better staged than Han’s pre-special edition confrontation against Greedo!
This film almost calls back to how Han was originally inspired off the classic Hollywood Western gunslinger: blaster on his belt, fingers always ready to fire any given second. But that old inspiration goes a few steps further in following a few beats to those types of westerns: Han’s gang winds up attacked while on a snow planet by a gaggle of marauders whose dress in some ways resemble Native Americans, a tribal choir engulfing the score. A key plot point between the main characters and these marauders parallels a truce set between White men and the Indian Chief to fight a common threat, fitting an old Western “white savior” archetype. Then it all ends with the sheriff riding alone toward the sunset (ahem, starfield). Okay, I’m being a little too kind, now about the little influence left on Han’s growth, starting with his and Lando’s friendship, which seems significantly weaker than The Empire Strikes Back. Their first encounter only once mentions the common daddy problems they share, except plot progression instead of personal turmoil still ultimately drives their future interactions. Surely, the screenwriters better understood Lando’s persona than the unenthusiastic Han, though his pansexuality is certainly hinted at, the efforts to market it do not live up to any kind of hype, as it affects zip-nada in the story. The closest Han gets to personal with anyone is his mentor figure, who teaches him to trust no one, which as we all know, comes back to bite Han much later into his life more than once. While these characters together often attempt humor, memorable snarky humor never pops up. The odds of any dialogue doing something other than advance the next side quest is approximately 3,720 to 1. Plus, there are many coincidences that evidence inconsistency in writing out Han’s personality: he speaks Wookiee directly to Chewbacca, which we have never once seen him do.
Before I discuss this feature’s greatest flaw, here comes its best endeavor: production design. On Corellia, where Han first lives, the architectural design completely shuts off the sky, staging a sensational Indiana Jones style Landspeeder chase that should guarantee excitement right away. Corellia’s dark industrial atmosphere soon freezes into a cold, massive mountain range, contrasted later to a leopard-colored club, until toned back down inside a tungsten underground club, claustrophobic to signify tension. Said design choices become a very stark see-saw balancing the splendor of the Sierra Nevada and the murderous malice that happens within those borders. In similar fashion, subtle beauty differs the time of betrayal depicted. You see some beautiful sights alright, such as Emilia Clarke’s black silk dress, but not before a small expositional image shows a Stormtrooper separating a mother from her children.
It proves the production team’s mindset behind Solo: A Star Wars Story: a push for unrealized societal ideas. One of those ideas lies inside the memory system of Lando’s droid, L3-37, who wants to rebel against droid enslavement, so they don’t have to forcibly fight each other—Mike Vick style. It’s not just that this side plot is completely unnecessary to the main plot (which probably doesn’t matter anyway, because there isn’t really one), but the one leading that side plot frankly annoys of Jar Jar Binks proportions. Not to mention despite the last three installments’ achievement in ethnic diversity, essentially all humans, besides Lando Calrissian, are white, setting a step backwards in the Star Wars franchise when it comes to prominent representation across multiple groups.
Ultimately, Star Wars spinoff number two ends up an overly convenient narrative that proves why Han Solo is better off kept carbon frozen, like Harrison Ford wanted years ago.

The last 2 star wars films had me conflicted. I loved the gritty feel of Rogue one but missed the character development of the main numbered installments. I felt Solo did a great job of telling a self-contained story, while still adding depth to preexisting characters. It was a fun adventure film that to me felt like star wars. This was added by the use of practical effects in certain scenes that appeared more real than the CGI counter parts. Some things that didn’t work for me was some of the scenes were too dark and hard to follow, and the main robot came across as more annoying than enjoyable. From an acting standpoint, I don’t think anyone can capture the natural charisma of Harrison Ford, but I thought Alden Ehrenriech had a believable enough performance. As a whole I thought the cast was great, Donald Glover standing out as a perfect Lando. My Spoiler-Free Thoughts on Solo:

WELL. That was something. I really enjoyed #SoloAStarWarsStory. If you didn’t like Last Jedi, I really think you’ll enjoy this, even maybe more than Rogue One. The cast is great. Alden Ehrenreich makes an impression as young Han Solo. Donald Glover steals the show as Lando. Chewbacca is finally utilized to his ultimate potential. And, the rest of the supporting cast each serves their purpose. For me, my favorite supporting characters in Solo were Qui’ra, Lando’s droid L3-37, Dryden Vos and Jon Favreau’s CGI character Rio Durant, the latter who I really hope gets an action figure from Hasbro soon, and not just a Funko pop. Also, Enfys Nest was a better character than Phasma. The cinematography by Bradford Young, while at certain times a bit too dark, was well used to show the griminess of the galaxy and how seedy the underworld of the galaxy is, especially in the opening scenes of Solo, which I will say while it has some issues, is really a unique introduction from any Star Wars movie we got but has some familiarities. Also, the visual effects were great. And, there are some big references and surprise appearances in this movie that will excite fans for the future of the Star Wars Story movies. A big one you will not expect. Also, I really like John Powell’s score and the score John Williams came up with for young Han Solo. Aside from that, there are a few things that miss for me, although I don’t wanna say what without spoiling. However, all in all, for a movie that Star Wars fans felt they didn’t want, its one they need and will enjoy coming off of a divisive movie in The Last Jedi. And, all I will say is you should go in expecting an Indiana Jones movie in the Star Wars universe. And, you may be satisfied. It’s a fun film go see it and it’s the best way to celebrate Star Wars Birthday on May 25th. I give it 4.75/5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Also, you will really find yourself being very surprised by what you learn about Han and Chewie in the scene when they first meet.

I was hesitant to see Solo after the horrible Episode 7, the mediocre episode 8 and all of the troubles during production (studio supposedly saying kid playing Solo couldn't act, studio firing the directors). So I honestly went in not expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself LOVING this movie. Sure the kid isn't gonna win best actor, but he's ok as Han. Glover is spot on as Lando (at times even sounding just like him). Really this movie is a heist movie set in the future. I saw the movie TWICE over the Memorial day weekend. I had a tear come to my eyes at times and chills at moments in this movie. THAT was something the episodes 7 & 8 could NOT do.

I don't understand why Disney can get these stand alone movies SO right and get the main storyline movies SO wrong. Definitely worth seeing. I'll see it again I'm sure in theaters.

The plot didn't just move along, it raced and got sloppy. While the special effects were well done, it was the poor acting, (or maybe just poor script-writing?) that tanked it for me. The kids enjoyed it, but this isn't one I would want to watch again. Also- I don't mind a little girl power, but the pro- third wave feminism was spackled on a tad thick, there are ways to promote ideas subtly, with greater effect in the end; the creators of this movie had no idea how to do this. Blahhhhhhh... Expand

EverySolo is a good star wars story, but not a good film. Where Rogue One excelled at referencing the original films in its cinematography and editing, Solo simply forces its characters to speak dialogue exclusively from the originals. Every stormtrooper says 'move along' over and over, Han keeps telling everyone never to tell him the odds and a droid that has just been gambling complains about not being served. The first few are fun, after that it gets ridiculous. The music especially is very often inconsistent with the tone of what is happening on screen and feels awfully out of place. This, combined with a plot that is never quite sure where it is going and characters which, aside from Solo and Qira are largely expendable and or inconsequential makes for a hollow adventure that never quite manages to be fun. The poorly handled sequel set up is the final nail in the coffin of a mess of a film made from what must have been, at some point a very capable and entertaining script. Expand

This movie was even more disappointing than The Last Jedi. Solo didn’t really have to be made. Despite its amazing action scenes, the film suffers from mediocre acting and a forgettable storyline.

I loved all the original trilogy (Empire being my favourite), and also liked Revenge of the Sith. I did not like Force Awakens that much (it was too alike to what came before), and I absolutely hate TLJ with a passion. TLJ is the worst major film I had ever seen. So I was very circumspect about going for Solo assuming the worst. Waited for the reviews and they weren't encouraging either. But they were not as bad as TLJ so I thought I'd go. And I didn't regret it. This move is roughly as good as Return Of The Jedi. It is slightly overdone in some places, and its not entirely fair to compare Han Solo to only Harrison Ford, but this is a good movie. It is literally nail biting action and suspense, good dialog (miles better than TLJ and better than the Prequels), and very nice visuals but not over the top to the point of interfering with the plot. If there is one criticism I have of the movie, the primary villain played by Paul Bettany is a bit weak. I just don't feel intimidated by his presence in the least. I am not a paid shill but I cannot emphasize enough to fans that they should give this movie a chance. It is far and away one of the best of the newer Star Wars movies to come out of Disney. Disney, please bring back Kasdan and throw out Rian Johnson. As he would put it, "bury him if you have to" ;-)

Update: Went to see the movie again after a couple of days and enjoyed it in different ways the second time around. I really like this film but fear the message it sends to Disney if it flops. I don't think the franchise can survive another TLJ and implore Disney to not think that was a "successful" movie just because it made more money. That movie did well because of expectations it can't possibly be bad while Solo is doing badly because people assume it will be. An interesting indicator is, the metacritic score for solo is higher and still climbing as word of mouth slowly trickles into the ears of more fans.

Update! Saw this movie a total of 4 times and it still never gets old. I don't do this often, and didn't do this for TFA. This is the sort of film I feel happy watching just like A New Hope.

Very well made. And to the haters who think I'm a Disney plant, go ~~~~ yourselves. Grow up and go enjoy the movie rather than hating just for the sake of it.

Is it passable, yes... is it great - not by a long shot. It has a few fleeting moments of greatness, but overall the best way to see this film is with tempered expectations.

It's very inoffensive, safe, and by-the-numbers. So if you got riled-up by The Last Jedi, this won't annoy at you in any way because it's a simple story that logically goes from A, to B, to C - therefore it could be considered a bit bland by some.

But overall it was watchable, and at least I didn't leave the cinema thinking the Star Wars brand had been tarnished (again). All the actors did their job, but no one was a particular stand-out; they just complimented each other (and the script) well.

At the end of the day, it put a smile on my face a couple of times, and that's never a bad thing when it comes to "modern" Star Wars films. Do you need to see it at the cinema? Not really... so that says a lot.

It's really hard to see this movie as a story about young Han Solo, despite the script keeps throwing reminders at us that this IS a Han Solo movie.

The main problem, to me, is the casting. Neither Han Solo nor Lando look anything like what they looked in the Original Trilogy, and that's pretty much a critical fail on part of the casting team. Both actors do a good job, though, yet without managing to fill the boots they were supposed to. Hell, in a couple of scenes even Emilia Clarke remembered how to act!

Furthermore, there are a couple of huge plot holes, such as Dryden asking them to act in secret because no one must connect him with their mission, and then sending his very-well-known-by-pretty-much-half-the-galaxy right-hand person with them, to make sure they see the job through.

That said, the movie is a good one, and a good Star Wars story, with all the classic stuff you might want. Witty lines, bad luck, bad luck, some plot twists, some light feelsy stuff, lasers, smugglers, the Empire, and so forth.

I had a very bad feeling about this movie and zero expectations given its troubled production history and terrible casting choices, and I ended up enjoying this movie way more than I enjoyed The Last Jedi. So much so, that I went to the theatre twice.

Verdict: Release the Space Kraken!

I had some issues with some of their casting choices (needlessly large names) and there were a few points of "ugh, really?" but in general I felt it was a good movie. Better than Last Jedi, but that's a low bar.

Everyone raves about Glover's Lando and they're right to. He did, imo, a fantastic job of being Lando. The speech, the style, the swagger, and the interactions with Han. Fabulous.

Han's never-give-up attitude and how he got into what he does was pretty well done, I feel. Seeing things for what they were rather than what he was told and ensuring that he got what he wanted, even if others told him he couldn't have it. Chewie was great. Not overdone, not underused; just right and in the right way. Got to see why you never upset a wookie :)

There were no "casino" or "pod race" scenes that took up large chunks of the movie and for that I am thankful. This was a story about Solo; simple as that.

I also enjoyed some of the twists near the end. Some were easy to see, others not so much, and one that left me scratching my head. Based on the head scratcher, I almost wonder if there will be a separate story spawned from this story that focuses on another character...

So why didn't I rate it higher? Solo was a bit too plucky. Harrison Ford had a sort of carefree attitude whereas Ehrenreich almost had a "stoked to be here" vibe going on. Easy to ignore but also something I am aware of. There was a chapter of the movie pretty early on that wasn't very space-y. I noticed how similar it seemed to some of the director's other movies. As I mentioned above, there were some "Ugh, really?" scenes/statements that either messed with the flow or felt shoehorned in just to make connections to the existing universe. But what I remember most were the awesome moments of awesome. Stories from the OG Trilogy that got some spotlight, interactions between characters, as well as Solo showing that he wasn't just a street rat, but a naturally talented and surprisingly lucky go-getter that's out to make his life comfortable by any means necessary. Now if only they could make him a bit more of a scoundrel...

Couldn't really fault it to be honest. 2 of the most beloved characters from my childhood being fleshed out. You can't go wrong.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start by saying hated TLJ, plotholes everywhere. Had reservations when i saw the metacritic score. DONT BE! Solo is solid, lotta good action, well paced, some iconic scenes, does a great job filling a great mans shoes. Even Harrelson doesnt blow the movie. Go see it, lotta Han & Chewy, with cool Lando scenes. Ron Howard should direct more and solid story from Kasdan. Up there with Rogue One but with better pacing. The critics that praised TLJ but going warmish on this one are the real problem, its in the top 5 SW movies easy. Expand

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

Review by Adam Reader. Solo a Star Wars story was a movie from Lucasfilms/Disney no one really asked for but we got anyway. Production for this movie has been from the start, with directors changing half way through production, and nearly unknown actor cast as the infamous Han Solo many people had lost all hope for the next theatrical instalment in one of the greatest fictional universes ever created, but alas this movie really surprised me. Despite what other reviewers have said I found Alden Ehrenreich a fantastic choice for the titular character. Many wanted a imitation of Harrison Ford, but Alden had the moments of charm and arrogance that comes from the galaxy’s best pilot, but still had the boyish charm that proceeds any smooth talking quick witted character. And Donald glover as Lando Calrissian may have been one of the best casting decisions in the re-booted Star Wars universe. He had the charm, wit, and screen presence Billy Dee Williams brought to the character 38 years ago in Empire Strikes Back. Chewie is always a delight on screen, and the additional characters performed by Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, and Paul Bettany worked well with the story and were portrayed with the usual brilliance of the actors. As far as story goes it was a fairly standard, by the books action sci-fi adventure. There was nothing particularly mind blowing or spectacular in the story telling, but if you love a good sci-fi heist movie you’ll probably enjoy this one. On top of the heist plot it also beings a lot of Star Wars cheesy nostalgia that was the be expected, teaching us about many classic Han Solo stories like the meeting of Lando, Chewie, and completing the Kessel run. There was a nice surprise cameo at the end that I did not expect. All in all it I found it a fun and enjoyable movie, but nothing out of the classic sci-fi movie tropes. The characters were enjoyable and fun to see in their pre-original trilogy days and it brought a lot of nostalgia from the galaxy far, far which I personally always enjoy

Although I believe the acting/casting was well done, the story drags due to there really being no antagonist. Before a specific scene at the end of the film, I would have given this movie a much lower rating. This scene rejuvenated my attention and made the ending fly by. It not only sets up for a second Han movie, but also ties in the Clone Wars series/movie...finally. When Disney came out and said they were canon, it seemed like they were hesitant on touching anything to do with the prequels... until now.

I think that if you are a Star Wars fanatic, like myself, you should definitely go see this movie in theatres. My true rating for this movie is a 6.5/10, but since I have to round, I'll round up.

I'm not a dedicated Star Wars fan. I haven't seen every movie, or ready any novels, or geeked out with friends about any of it. (I did love the CRPGs "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" I&II, but that's about it.)
It should tell you something, then, that I had such a great time watching "Solo." While some familiarity with Star Wars is helpful, this movie doesn't just rely on its brand. "Solo" is exciting, suspenseful, and believable. And it doesn't have one character whose entire purpose is to provide cringe-worthy comic relief. (C3PO, I'm looking at you.)
The movie doesn't get a 10 because one small thing important to the plot didn't really make sense, and because while I briefly thought about seeing it a second time it didn't inspire the urge to buy a DVD. But it was definitely my favorite of the Star Wars movies I've seen, and I whole-heartedly recommend watching it.
