While I give minor props to the actor playing Han (he wasn't all that bad) the movie itself was just awful all around - bland, boring, lame, politically correct BS, and jokes that fall totally flat. This was easily one of the worst Star Wars films ever made - on par with TLJ. I can't believe they got this so wrong in every way. Expand

I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised with the film. It is the origin story of Solo,Chewy and Lando with both characters being well portrayed.
The film is rather simplistic but the plot is decent and there are some good action set pieces.
One character that really stands out is Solo's gang leader's pilot droid who steals all the scenes she is in and is quite funny.
Woody harrelson plays the Ringleader straight without eccentricities which was good.
The villain was very weak .
This episode reminded me a bit of the old Firefly tv show with same kind of ships and blasters. Worth seeing .

Solo: A Star Wars Story

The reminiscent natured script never works on a prequel or a spin-off for the writers winds up spending their half of the time on creating a propaganda to end it up on a circle or form a loop with a hope that it will justify the actions or occurring events. Such origin features demands proper work on each aspects that focuses on keeping the audience electrified and engaged throughout the course of it and not charm their way out of it (something which can only be created after a connection is established). Jonathan and Lawrence Kasdan; the writers, shares their fan-boy moments with a delight in the script but as far as the structure is concerned, it walks completely on the similar route as this world has previously managed to do so. Ron Howard; the director, offered a lot of expectations and doesn't fail on flaunting its brilliant execution skills but even a Star Wars genre with his eyes, is no different from any other feature of his. Ron spends his first act setting the plots and the characters in an unnerving way for the audience like a slow pill that isn't about to kick until the second half arrives. As always a Star Wars feature doesn't disappoint on technical aspects like stunning production and costume designs, breathtaking visuals and amazing vfx, although the background score isn't upto the mark by John Powell. The action sequences are shot nicely but the air-based sequence is the highlight of it as it is one of the wittiest and nail-biting chase sequence of Star Wars. It certainly is a lot of pressure to pull off an iconic character like Han Solo and Alden Ehrenreich's hard work is clearly visible here but isn't as convincing and addition to that Emilia Clarke and Paul Bettany aren't at their best despite of being supported well by Woody Harrelson and Donald Grover. The performance is also one of the main reasons why the emotions depicted in here comes out a bit shallow and why the audience feels disconnected with the characters. Solo: A Star Wars Story is somewhat inedible as it fumbles its way down the road where the audience is neither in awe of it nor exhausted by it.

I'm giving kudos to the actors as they deserve praise for doing a good job. As with The Last Jedi, it was the cast that made the film memorable. Everything else on the other hand...

It was Disney's controllers that gave me great disdain for this film and many other recent Disney films. One can research and see the heads of this industry have a corrupt agenda. And it is this that has been plaguing the modern film in the past decade or so. Enough of the SJW hints in the films or trying to paint certain cultures as bad.

For crying out loud just make decent movies. Movies that relate to the universe in which the characters and plots take place. Stop bringing real world issues into them. Focus solely on the plot of the film, and the movie would be good. If somebody wants to see footage of political or social events, that's what the news networks are for.

Let me reiterate: 10/10 for the actors and those that worked on the movie sets. 0/10 for the ones who own Disney and inject their agendas into the films.

Acting is good to very good. Film is enjoyable as a whole.
Some decisions seem odd or very verbatim. Without any reference to measure by the film would be a 5 or a 6 on a 10 point scale.

Acting is good to very good. Film is enjoyable as a whole.
Some decisions seem odd or very verbatim.

Without any reference to measure by the film would be a 5 or a 6 on a 10 point scale.

Where the film actively fails is in portraying a Han Solo that is vaguely resembling the force of nature that the Han Solo had in the first movie, A New Hope.

Poised precipitously between good and evil, compentent, savvy, street-wise Han Solo has been now preceded by a harmless, with heart of gold, big, blustering, blundering, superiorily lucky, impulsive, naive, boisterous, ever optimistic big child.

A space faring Peter Pan that fails to grow up. Or where he grows up is in one final act at the end of the movie where he finally commits a, later trademark, evil deed.

Han Solo here is a big child, somebody who would be lost without help.

So my disappointment with Solo is that it paints a picture that is a caricature of the "A New Hope" Solo without leaving many points to refine.

When transposed directly into the chronologically later story instead of the Character every one wanted to play now Han becomes the most harmless sorry piece on the storyboard.

Maybe a more telling name would be Solo: A Star Wars Character(s) wrecking story

Rather disappointing.

Alden Ehrenreich does an excellent job as Han because he doesn't try to portray "Harrison Ford as Han Solo" but Han the character himself. The supporting cast is also great.

The movie starts off slow in the first hour or so, but by the third act you're fully caught up in what will happen next. The driving forces of the movie are the characters; Han himself is still the sarcastic scroudrel we know and love, but untarnished by a life of smuggling; Lando Calrissian is a great comic relief character; Tobias Beckett is the bitter smuggler and thief; Qi'ra proves to be much more than "Han's love interest" as someone who will do anything to survive; L3-37 is a droid determined to start an uprising. If you're a dedicated Star Wars fan, you'll be delighted at all the references to the Star Wars universe; Mandalorian armor is seen, dozens of alien races we've seen in other movies have cameos, there are a LOT of hidden nods, and the character reveal at the end is FANTASTIC. (No, he's not supposed to be dead; the animated Clone Wars show explains that.)

If you're a Star Wars fan, this movie is a must-see.

I thoroughly enjoyed Solo, and the spin it had on the reasons “WHY” Harrison Ford’s Solo was charismatic, rough around the edges, a diamond in the rough. Not everyone starts life jaded. I think all the actors played their role extremely well, and the movie went back to the basics of storytelling. There were little nuggets and shout outs to all fan boys, but this was a spin-off from the trilogy. With regards to the politics infused into Star Wars, I will agree Disney needs to eliminate this undertone to its SW movie franchise. However, I have been a long time SW fan (established in 1977) and I will say nothing beats the original trilogy, but the only two great movies for me that has come from Disney’s SW are Rogoue One and Solo. This movie delivered entertainment, twisted romance, comedy and a great cameo! I love Hans Solo and Chewy even more now than ever! This movie, for me, is better than ANY DC or MARVEL (excluding Deadpool 1 and 2) movie. Expand

I had low expectations for this after hearing the production woes and let's be honest, there isn't a more impossible acting challenge than filling Han Solo's space boots. But this movie is EXACTLY what I have always loved about Star Wars:I had low expectations for this after hearing the production woes and let's be honest, there isn't a more impossible acting challenge than filling Han Solo's space boots. But this movie is EXACTLY what I have always loved about Star Wars: it's a bustling, swashbuckling space western. The comedy notes are actually played perfectly, and the movie gets genuine laughs without coming across as pathetically desperate for the jokes to hit. Alden Ehrenreich does a solid job of portraying Han, again, I can't see anyone nailing that role. Supporting cast is all terrific, especially Phoebe Waller-Bridge as a no-nonsense droid activist. Really the only thing that could really boost this movie over the top would have been some more creature encounters (which for some reason no new Star Wars movie seems to include), although this movie has one memorable one. In short, I walked into this expecting to never want to see it again, and now not only can I not wait to see it again, I would be into a sequel, or even a spin-off movie with some of these new characters.
P.S. The sad men in these low scored reviews who are devastated by the 'feminist robot', etc, are a pure joy to read. I'm a man, I've loved Star Wars all my life, and I would put my Star Wars nerddom up against anyone. I like baseball, comic books, off-roading, all kinds of traditionally 'male stuff' and this movie is great. Grow up, small men!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You have to remember that these spin-off movies are not going to be in the same vein as the original trilogy, and honestly that is what makes Solo GREAT! It a story of who Han was before we met him in the Mos Eisley cantina. Granted, some things were over-played *cough cough the gravity hole*, it was truly enjoyable throughout and made me wanting more when the closing credits rolled. Donald Glover's performance as Lando was brilliant and the female powerhouses of Emillia Clarke, Thandie Newton and Pheobe Waller-Bridge drove the plot along. Once you get over the fact that Solo (amongst planned spin-offs for Obi Wan and Boba Fett) aren't supposed to be told in the same fashion as the original trilogy, Solo was exciting and enticing from the moment that blue scroll appeared to the final credits and the perfect start to a summer of fantastic movies. Most likely everyone saying anything positive about it in the user-section will get downvoted heavily, too, as people can´t distinguish anymore between a crusade on Disney´s mishandling of the main-series and the actual quality of a movie. I´m not a shill, I´m not enthralled by Disney and I am severely disappointed by how Episode 7 and especially 8 went, as many rightfully are, but still people will assume the worst things about me simply because I will not be convenient for their cause by liking a new Star Wars movie.

Solo, despite everything being stacked against it, turned out to be really good and the most Star Wars-y since Return of the Jedi. The characters are engaging and fun, yet also not lacking in complexity and flaws. Especially Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover, Joonas Suotamo and yes, Alden Ehrenreich fill their roles with so much vibrancy and life that it is a joy to watch. The action is playful and exciting without a need for "hypercharging" everything as JJ Abrams and Johnson did, it´s easy to follow yet the setpieces are memorable and harken back to the good old "lived-in universe"-feel of the old trilogy I love so much. The story is both mature and accessible with a couple fun twists and turns that help portray the seedy underbelly of the galaxy. The moments every fan was waiting for yet dreaded because they could so easily be grating with the wrong execution are handled gracefully, confident and understated which was fantastic to see. The biggest problem is the pacing of the movie; in the middle of it, it drags for about twenty minutes as the further direction of it has been established yet the stakes are not quite there yet. It recovers quickly from this stutter, though, leading into a superb third act.

In short: Solo somewhat rekindled my hope that there can still be good Star Wars movies that create the fun and excitement of the old movies while standing on their own. I am sad that so many will not give it a chance simply by feeling in the right to slam everything Star Wars till Disney fixes its main-series titles. There is plenty here to help flesh out the SW universe and we get a deeper look into the criminal elements than the surface level glances we've got in the past movies.

There are some minor issues with the plot - bizarre hyperinflation in a stated 3 year period, a critical element only being found on one planet - but nothing that takes you out of the experience. The acting is pretty solid, I was skeptical when Donald Glover was cast as Lando, but by the end of the movie I was sold.

-Chewy kicked butt This is what ruined it:

-poor, childish dialogue bereft of realism -Young Solo is a bland pretty boy with not a shred of resemblance to older Solo
-Shoe Horning of political statements that have nothing to do with the plot -irritating robot character reminiscent of Jaja Binks who just churns out constant, lack-lustre witticisms.
-shallow, ridiculous plot devices like characters randomly meeting other characters just to propel the plot forward -awful acting by Emilia Clark, who was obviously missing her dragons
-Solo standing around with his legs apart like some cliché cowboy who you just want to kick in the nuts. -drawn out and too long

I felt a little disappointed because it was missing the traditional Star Wars scrolling opening while being blasted by the music of John Williams (even though he DID compose the music alongside John Powell). There WAS an opening card sequence quickly detailing Han's back story up to that point. We were able to see who Han really is, how he obtained the millennium falcon, and how he became such close friends with Chewbacca the Wookie. Donald Glover did an amazing job as young Lando Calrissian. I absolutely love Woody Harrelson and I thoroughly enjoyed his performance in this film. There were some really great twists and turns throughout the story with a gasp-worthy revelation at the very end. As much as I love and respect Ron Howard, I really don't feel he was the right fit for a Star Wars film. This was more a Ron Howard movie than a Star Wars movie. That being said, overall, I really enjoyed this film and would recommend it to my friends whether they were already existing Star Wars fans or new to the franchise. Expand

Till this point the sequel movies have been a disappointment, no world building or real character building and most of that blame would be put on The Last Jedi for that but that's neither here nor there. The point is, is that this film is actually good, perhaps even better than Rogue One(which was the only previous Disney Star Wars film I've enjoyed) Surprisingly Alden Ehrenreich has the charm and swashbuckling style of Harrison Ford's Han Solo, I was really cautious going in and I have to say that the trailers did not do Alden justice but perhaps that was intentional I don't know. Donald Glover is pretty good as Lando and I really liked Woody Harrelson's character, they fit their parts. Another actor who's also pretty good is Emilia Clarke, she was pretty bland in the Terminator movie but here she's actually charming in her role. The robot L3-37, right... some people wont like her but I imagine some people will, she's played a certain way that one will see as either and endearing or annoying but I personally really liked her character too. Anyways the critic scores interesting because these are the same people that gave The Last Jedi glowering reviews, obviously there's something shady going on there. I give this this film an 8 just like Rogue One because it's surprisingly cohesive, the characters work well in their roles, the story focuses far more on these characters than I thought it would, i'd say this is definitely more worth your money to watch than The Last Jedi was. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Solo: A Star Wars Story was absolutely FANTASTIC. I'm actually in disbelief at how good it was! Wooooooo! As someone who loves The Force Awakens, enjoys Rogue One for what it is and really is not at all a fan of The Last Jedi, I was blown away by how much I enjoyed this movie!

This was classic Lawerence Kasdan dialogue with great character moments given to every major character. Side note he also wrote Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and a few other small films - catch the sarcasm? Speaking of which, Solo reminded me in many ways of Raiders of the Lost Ark and yes - Alden Ehrenreich was, in fact, Han Solo. The pacing of this movie was perfect, the score was beautiful, especially the love theme for Qi'Ra -- just gorgeous. Wooooooooooo!!!

Okay, I may be on a Star Wars high at the moment! Crazy enough, I actually really hope to see some sort of sequel to this movie which follows Han and Chewbacca. That's how much I bought Ehrenreich as Han and Chewie as well Chewie. Go check it out - give Solo chance! Oh! Last thing - there is a tie in I did not see coming at all which perfectly sets up another spin-off film featuring an actor who maybe, just might also be in a film about talking bear who loves honey!!

Solo, in a word, is great. It's a non-stop adrenaline ride, exactly what I wanted out of the movie, one of the best heist movies I've seen in years. While Alden and Donald are never quite convincing as Han and Lando, they did their best job filling difficult shoes, and that is good enough. All of the new characters are likeable except for L3, who I have mixed feelings about, though sadly a few of them like Rio are wasted. The writers' attempts to show Lando as a pansexual who is romantically interested in the robot L3 were a bit cringeworthy, but aside from that the movie is great. I deducted 2 points from my score for the obvious SJW influences that went into developing Lando and L3, leaving my final score at 8/10. Expand

Related media: I have seen all of the Star Wars films, but chose to sit The Last Jedi out and save my money. I had a bad feeling about it… after watching The Force Awakens.

What's it like?: It tells the story of Han, from his tough youth at Corellia, shipyard of the Empire’s fleet, to when he wins the Millennium Falcon from Lando (not a spoiler). New events and characters were added to his canon and one detail appears to be there just for Disney to spin-off a character to another film, say Solo 2? Overall, the film didn’t feel special – there were not much tension or surprises, and the soldiers/guards still can’t shoot! Positives: 1) Lando is flamboyant and L3, the robot, is funny and interesting as a robot-suffragist.

Negatives: 1) The story is not surprising or special and it lacks that Star Wars essence. Without the Han Solo brand, it would not really stand out. Rogue One felt similar for most of the film, but it did have the epic space battle at the end to sum it all up.

2) The film seems to be written just to explain why the Kessel run happened. The part of the story near the ‘run’ felt contrived and it had a few lazy Star Wars myths thrown in there.

3) The film also explains how Han gets his name, how he meets Chewie, why he's called Chewie and why Han shoots first, mostly in the most conventional and uninspiring of ways. That's the director's fault.

How would the different age groups rate it?

Children: Good
Teens: Good
Young adults: Good Medium age adults: Good
Old adults: Average Rating: 4/5 (no half scores). Pay to watch it in the cinema.

Some characters have been underused (Val, Rio, Vos was just... there and that's all), but other covered up for that (Lando, Beckett, Han (Alden definitely exceeded my expectations), Chewie). Overall, I went to the cinema expecting something average at most and left the building baffled. Plus, adding a lot of smaller and bigger easter eggs and one, very special cameo. Solo: A star wars story falls apart before our eyes in so many ways, like no other star wars film did before (besides the prequels). It fails being a prequel, while it also cannot become an actual standalone movie. The story is as bland and predictable as it could be, and it's pretty obvious that its sole purpose is to fill in the gaps between scenes where Han meets Lando, Chewie, or the Falcon; the visuals are totally forgettable, the characters are two dimensional and they don't get from A to B, while they also cannot convey any emotions neither to other characters nor to the viewers ; and I could continue. Surprisingly, Alden Ehrenreich does a fine job in this movie, but it definitely doesn't capture the essence of Han Solo, like how this movie doesn't understand the universe in where it stands. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY. 8/10. Great Film.

Despite all the stories of its troubled production and allegedly being pulled back from the brink ,the SOLO film is great fun. I saw a midnight showing in the UK, and the film was thoroughly enjoyable. Far more engaging and focussed than the ramshackle and embarassingly poor " The Last Jedi". The film makers didn't abuse and disrespect the characters this time in the way they did to Luke Skywalker , and they didn't make pointless vapid scenes, like they did in the Canto Blight section of The Last Jedi. I say give the new trilogy to Ron Howard, he appears to be able to do no wrong, and he has such a great history of film making.

In SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY the cast were great, with our leading man even managing to sound like Han Solo ! The music was a little hit and miss, with music you wanted to hear both muted and under used, and other music making little or no impact. But that's only a slight criticism of an otherwise engaging film. Having read some of the "professional critics" reviews of this film on this site, for those that didn't review it well, they were WAY off the mark and obviously have little or no idea what makes good Sci-Fi, good Star Wars or good fun. Ignore them, they're obviously full of their own precious, yet ultimately entirely unimportant & incorrect opinions. Lets face it, "professional critics" are usually full of "something", if you know what I mean !

This film has a fast moving plot, lots of action, brilliant special effects, tonnes of fan service , both visual and verbal and proof to all those that didn't like that little edit in the remaster of Star Wars that George Lucas made where Greedo got the first shot off...I can tell you now with utter certainty & with faith in the quality of this film , that Han Shot First.

Bluray steelbook pre-ordered !!!

The film has a gritty, adult feel and displayed a lot of sensitivity to tone and character. Some cool visual designs and effects. The surprise cameo of a certain character from other films left my jaw on the floor.
The Bad: The story lacked any kind of a strong villain or convincing stakes. One particular action sequence went on forever and was simply boring. The film was tonally very monotonous being dark and claustrophobic throughout. Not enough epic establishing shots or strongly developed sense of where the characters are.
The Ugly: The musical score is a complete failure...to a point where it nearly sinks the film. Gone are the memorable and perfectly timed motifs and poetic artistry of John Willams, replaced by general wallpaper movie-music that you'd never buy to listen to on it's own. Lando's droid comes across as a somewhat annoying, pro-rights droid activist, which was interesting, but it was so relentlessly ham-fisted and pervasive throughout.

When this was announced, we all had low expectations - "nobody can convincingly play the young version of an established character". I was minded that if they made it "just about" plausible and believable, then even if it wasn't great, I would be satisfied. But this Han Solo actor beat those expectations and played him to a convincing degree! It was not "just about okay"; it was convincing from his look, to his voice, right down to his mannerisms. Was it perfect and was it 100% the Han Solo we know? No, but this would be impossible to achieve and unrealistic to expect. But I promise you can put whatever subtle differences he displays down to him "being a younger Han Solo". The point is, it's better than "just about okay". On a scale of 1 to 10, where 5 is "neutral just bobbing between okay and not", I'd give it an 8 or 9, simply because 10 is impossible. It was a great attempt and you can tell the actor put in the effort and rose to the challenge so as not to disappoint us.

This film suffers a little from the fact that there is no obvious overarching plot. It's more of a silent documentary and biography of how Han Solo became a smuggler, and obviously ends with him setup to become the Han Solo that we see in EP4, rather than with a typical "good guy kills bad guy, happily ever after" ending that we're used to. This is fine, because the film is great and exciting.

I have seen people criticise the lack of the Millenium Falcon doing many complex manoeuvres in this film: don't listen to these critics. Scenes of the millenium falcon doing sophisticated battle manoeuvres were not necessary because the other action scenes were sufficient. We've already seen what the falcon can do enough times, so it would have just been filler and repetetive anyway. Plus, this film was not about the Millenium Falcon, it was about Han Solo the Smuggler. How can we learn about his tricks as a smuggler if the focus is on the falcon dodging ties and flying through planet and asteroid cores?

As a film: 8/10 - As a film, it lacked an overarching plot. As a film, it left me satisfied but not wowed. Satisfied is all I require for a good rating however.

As a SW film: 9/10 - As a SW film, the lack of an obvious overarching plot in a side story is understandable.

It seems the "A Star Wars Story" series are hitting every note, while the main episodes are still finding their footing and letting us down in the process.

An utterly charming entry into the SW canon, Solo has real heart. Totally respectful of the lore and the low stakes really work in it's favour. 2 hours of fun.

If you can instead seperate this movie from Han Solo and watch it as an extended universe/smuggler/anti hero movie, then it does actualy come to life alot more. Some nice tie ins to the SW universe and some very cool scenes put this movie ahead (atleast in my opinion) of all the Disney Star wars films to date.

Putting it bluntly this movie should never of been about Han Solo, it's simply not good enough and to try and capture the feeling of Harrison Ford as Han Solo was never going to work

Could do alot better but ultimately could of done a hell of alot worse.

The prospect of seeing Han Solo’s earliest adventures in this universe could have established a solid spin-off series, but the Kasdan’s script says otherwise. The lack of characterization regarding Han Solo and his earlier years, as well as the other new characters around him, makes for a rather boring introduction that again, on paper, would be great. The most infuriating aspect of this picture arguably is the lazy attempts at explaining basic fundamentals of Han’s life as we knew it back in 1977. Without spoilers, the film rushes through many plot ideas that could make for a much better and cohesive story, in an effort to establish a flip-flop twist of a finale that doesn’t even make much sense. Also, without staying for the end credits, no one would know that this film was helmed by Ron Howard, which is extremely disappointing. Honestly, Disney should have a major inner-reworking when it comes to their Lucasfilm branch, as they currently resemble the likes of a six-year-old with their parent’s credit card in a toy store - running from one thing to the other without much thought - and in Disney’s case, a lack of care regarding execution and long-term, emotionally investing stories, which is what Star Wars has been known for. Disney made a safe, by the numbers, blockbuster movie and then added Star Wars into it instead of making a Star Wars movie and turning it into a Blockbuster. Such a shame.

A plot that I just don't care about. It's no wonder this was a box office failure. Good riddance. This was tedious at best to get through. Whomever decided upon the final color grade ought to be slapped because everything was waaaaay too dark, especially for this being a Han Solo film. Am I missing something? When was it decided that Star Wars has to be this dark and gritty in look, but have no story content that is at all that dark to begin with? The tone is half one way, half the other. Honestly: if you're thinking about watching this, I don't recommend. Expand
