While well made, acted, and written, the film feels overwhelmingly unnecessary. It puts together Star Wars’ 4th straight and uninnovative “crew/ensemble story”, has poor pacing, and, aside from a decent action set piece (the train battle), it is just boring, predictable, and pointless. Finally, the stakes are next to none since we know who lives and dies or at least becomes relevant. Overall, this movie should have never been greenlit in favor of better solo (no pun intended) movies for other great characters. The film is purely peripheral for diehard Star Wars fans and not worth it for casual fans and moviegoers. Expand

Solo: A Star Wars Story

The reminiscent natured script never works on a prequel or a spin-off for the writers winds up spending their half of the time on creating a propaganda to end it up on a circle or form a loop with a hope that it will justify the actions or occurring events. Such origin features demands proper work on each aspects that focuses on keeping the audience electrified and engaged throughout the course of it and not charm their way out of it (something which can only be created after a connection is established). Jonathan and Lawrence Kasdan; the writers, shares their fan-boy moments with a delight in the script but as far as the structure is concerned, it walks completely on the similar route as this world has previously managed to do so. Ron Howard; the director, offered a lot of expectations and doesn't fail on flaunting its brilliant execution skills but even a Star Wars genre with his eyes, is no different from any other feature of his. Ron spends his first act setting the plots and the characters in an unnerving way for the audience like a slow pill that isn't about to kick until the second half arrives. As always a Star Wars feature doesn't disappoint on technical aspects like stunning production and costume designs, breathtaking visuals and amazing vfx, although the background score isn't upto the mark by John Powell. The action sequences are shot nicely but the air-based sequence is the highlight of it as it is one of the wittiest and nail-biting chase sequence of Star Wars. It certainly is a lot of pressure to pull off an iconic character like Han Solo and Alden Ehrenreich's hard work is clearly visible here but isn't as convincing and addition to that Emilia Clarke and Paul Bettany aren't at their best despite of being supported well by Woody Harrelson and Donald Grover. The performance is also one of the main reasons why the emotions depicted in here comes out a bit shallow and why the audience feels disconnected with the characters. Solo: A Star Wars Story is somewhat inedible as it fumbles its way down the road where the audience is neither in awe of it nor exhausted by it.

Solo: A star wars story falls apart before our eyes in so many ways, like no other star wars film did before (besides the prequels). It fails being a prequel, while it also cannot become an actual standalone movie. The story is as bland and predictable as it could be, and it's pretty obvious that its sole purpose is to fill in the gaps between scenes where Han meets Lando, Chewie, or the Falcon; the visuals are totally forgettable, the characters are two dimensional and they don't get from A to B, while they also cannot convey any emotions neither to other characters nor to the viewers ; and I could continue. Surprisingly, Alden Ehrenreich does a fine job in this movie, but it definitely doesn't capture the essence of Han Solo, like how this movie doesn't understand the universe in where it stands. Expand

The surprise cameo of a certain character from other films left my jaw on the floor.
The Bad: The story lacked any kind of a strong villain or convincing stakes. One particular action sequence went on forever and was simply boring. The film was tonally very monotonous being dark and claustrophobic throughout. Not enough epic establishing shots or strongly developed sense of where the characters are.
The Ugly: The musical score is a complete failure...to a point where it nearly sinks the film. Gone are the memorable and perfectly timed motifs and poetic artistry of John Willams, replaced by general wallpaper movie-music that you'd never buy to listen to on it's own. Lando's droid comes across as a somewhat annoying, pro-rights droid activist, which was interesting, but it was so relentlessly ham-fisted and pervasive throughout.

The prospect of seeing Han Solo’s earliest adventures in this universe could have established a solid spin-off series, but the Kasdan’s script says otherwise. The lack of characterization regarding Han Solo and his earlier years, as well as the other new characters around him, makes for a rather boring introduction that again, on paper, would be great. The most infuriating aspect of this picture arguably is the lazy attempts at explaining basic fundamentals of Han’s life as we knew it back in 1977. Without spoilers, the film rushes through many plot ideas that could make for a much better and cohesive story, in an effort to establish a flip-flop twist of a finale that doesn’t even make much sense. Also, without staying for the end credits, no one would know that this film was helmed by Ron Howard, which is extremely disappointing. Honestly, Disney should have a major inner-reworking when it comes to their Lucasfilm branch, as they currently resemble the likes of a six-year-old with their parent’s credit card in a toy store - running from one thing to the other without much thought - and in Disney’s case, a lack of care regarding execution and long-term, emotionally investing stories, which is what Star Wars has been known for. A plot that I just don't care about. It's no wonder this was a box office failure. Good riddance. This was tedious at best to get through. Whomever decided upon the final color grade ought to be slapped because everything was waaaaay too dark, especially for this being a Han Solo film. Am I missing something? When was it decided that Star Wars has to be this dark and gritty in look, but have no story content that is at all that dark to begin with? The tone is half one way, half the other. Honestly: if you're thinking about watching this, I don't recommend. Expand

They double down though on the innanity of the Kessel Run's time being measured in parsecs, a unit of length, why? But hey, you get to see them DO the Kessel Run, so there's that. The supporting cast is forgettable so even if you love this effort it's not more than a 7 and if you hate it it's no less than a 3 so I'm giving it a middling 5, not a waste but won't watch again either. Sure, there is no Resistance or Empire here, but the happy Han Solo led Scooby-Doo gang and the Crimson Dawn organization feel pretty familiar nonetheless.

While this film might not do anything wrong which could apply to other films, it does have one specific sin: making the story of one of the most iconic characters of the Star Wars franchise not exciting. It is not boring; there are shoot-outs, gambling, weird-sounding aliens, but it is also not epic. And it should have been. This is Han Solo, who managed to make the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs, well if you "round it down". Yet the scene in which we see that, with the one in which he met his life-long pal Chewbacca or even the one in which he met Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover) are watered down a bit.

The film focuses instead on an unnecessary love story between Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) and Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke). OK, maybe she is a known character in the enormous Star Wars lore, but I don't care about that. Their interactions are also somewhat awkward and lifeless. Director Ron Howard was given the chance to make an iconic prequel, and while he did not ruin it, he certainly killed the buzz a bit.

'Solo: A Star Wars Story' has a disadvantage to most films. While the brilliant technical elements and sci-fi action set pieces might have made justice to other characters, Han Solo and Chewbacca are simply to iconic for anything less than awesome.

But I'm not going to lie...I didn't think it was that bad. But it still confirms the fact that this movie is corporate as hell.

Alden Ehrenreich I feel bad for because he's not terrible in this. He's not good either, but it is super **** clear how he was directed in trying to impersonate Harrison Ford. And it just never worked, he comes off awkward in a lot of parts, lacking in any of the iconic charm of Ford's iconic performance. But then again with how bland Han is as a character here I don't blame the meh performance. The same thing can be said about Donald Glover as Lando. Now don't get me wrong Glover does bring his charm and charisma as usual, which is why him being cast is perfect casting, but again with Ehrenreich, it is super clear that he's forced to copy Billy Dee Williams as Lando. The rest of the actors range, from passable with Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke, to good like with Paul Bettany and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. And Chewbacca was pretty great as usual god bless.

If there is one thing that saves this movie, is that the action scenes are pretty damn great. There's a lot of fun set pieces like the hovercraft chase at the beginning and the train heist, and the shootouts are pretty decent too, being competently shot and edited. Speaking of shot composition, I'll give Ron Howard this, the cinematography and blocking is great with some impressive shots. Ron Howard is not the best director when it comes with making impressive looking films as much as he does make safe looking films in terms of the visual style of film-making. But here Howard stepped up his game as a visual director. However it is super clear this film was micromanaged by Disney. Now the movie is typical Star Wars, the score is pretty good from John Powell (though nowhere near John Williams), the special and visual effects are great and in high care, not a bad CGI shot here, the production design and costumes and alien designs are top notch. But nothing can save this safe and passe script. A script that dare I say if Lord and Miller was kept on they wouldn't save this movie. Yeah...I said it!

The dialogue is atrocious! Everyone has made fun of how Han got his name, but like all around so much of what is being said just made me cringe all around. It's nowhere as bad as Prequel dialogues, but it's not the fun kind of corny like the Original trilogy or even the Sequels, it's just groan worthy. It's either the ham-fisted callback to the original films or obnoxious exposition. But the big problem is how safe this movie felt. You expect the movie to explore a little bit about the character of Han Solo or how Han Solo became the character he is, but the movie barely attempted to develop Solo as a character. He's just a boring hero who just fumbles around until he gets the Millennium Falcon. There's a shocking amount of boring with Han here, there's barely any growth and no depth. Like I get the lack of stake with Han because we know he'll live, but you could still try to make him fun or interesting. He's just the hero! A hero with a corny romance with Emilia Clarke. It's sad that while the romance isn't Anakin and Padme bad, but it's so boring and bland! Every other character is also flat, from Beckett being the average cold-hearten mento who warms up to the hero, to Qi'ra as the bland love interest, Dryden Vos as the bland bad guy who is just evil! The only exception, and that's a stretch, is Lando, although that's because of Glover, but still he's very one dimensional. The main plot is uneven, shifting from different motivation and plot thread haphazardly there is little to really care for. And no it's not because it's a prequel and we know that Han and Chewie and Lando will live. But because on top of being sloppy, the movie is so predictable. You can tell how the outcome will come when you see it. It really drains a lot of the fun and episodic feel the movie was aiming for, which to be fair with the action set-pieces and Powell's score adding some light fun here and there, but given how predictable and safe and no risk there is to alienate Star Wars fans, Solo is just a bland ride to sit through. There is some competence, but it is clear Disney made this film to cash in on the Star Wars fandom. Unless you are curious, skip this.

IfOne of the classic Star Wars icons now just got his own movie, set to answer whatever questions you seldom asked such as, “How did he meet Chewbacca?” What else do we learn about old Han Solo in his backstory? Well… not a whole lot else. If anything, longtime fans could enjoy a climactic nostalgic cameo towards the end, even if it skews the Star Wars prequel timeline. Ultimately, Solo: A Star Wars Story thrills enough, yet after thinking deeper, you will most likely say, “meh, now I can say I’ve seen it.”
Although technical scale still delivers; right away, a brief sequence insinuates a chaotic battleground ambience while Han is caught in the army. Of all breathtaking showcases this film features, I found most memorable an instance when the Millennium Falcon fell into a huge gravity well, home to a bigger than life creature; surround sound in full IMAX 3D terror. Technical prowess enhances the quieter moments too: a point during act three mimics a classic Western showdown without much surround sound to mark Han’s peak… I’d say it even looks far better staged than Han’s pre-special edition confrontation against Greedo!
This film almost calls back to how Han was originally inspired off the classic Hollywood Western gunslinger: blaster on his belt, fingers always ready to fire any given second. But that old inspiration goes a few steps further in following a few beats to those types of westerns: Han’s gang winds up attacked while on a snow planet by a gaggle of marauders whose dress in some ways resemble Native Americans, a tribal choir engulfing the score. A key plot point between the main characters and these marauders parallels a truce set between White men and the Indian Chief to fight a common threat, fitting an old Western “white savior” archetype. Then it all ends with the sheriff riding alone toward the sunset (ahem, starfield). Okay, I’m being a little too kind, now about the little influence left on Han’s growth, starting with his and Lando’s friendship, which seems significantly weaker than The Empire Strikes Back. Their first encounter only once mentions the common daddy problems they share, except plot progression instead of personal turmoil still ultimately drives their future interactions. Surely, the screenwriters better understood Lando’s persona than the unenthusiastic Han, though his pansexuality is certainly hinted at, the efforts to market it do not live up to any kind of hype, as it affects zip-nada in the story. The closest Han gets to personal with anyone is his mentor figure, who teaches him to trust no one, which as we all know, comes back to bite Han much later into his life more than once. While these characters together often attempt humor, memorable snarky humor never pops up. The odds of any dialogue doing something other than advance the next side quest is approximately 3,720 to 1. Plus, there are many coincidences that evidence inconsistency in writing out Han’s personality: he speaks Wookiee directly to Chewbacca, which we have never once seen him do.
Before I discuss this feature’s greatest flaw, here comes its best endeavor: production design. On Corellia, where Han first lives, the architectural design completely shuts off the sky, staging a sensational Indiana Jones style Landspeeder chase that should guarantee excitement right away. Corellia’s dark industrial atmosphere soon freezes into a cold, massive mountain range, contrasted later to a leopard-colored club, until toned back down inside a tungsten underground club, claustrophobic to signify tension. Said design choices become a very stark see-saw balancing the splendor of the Sierra Nevada and the murderous malice that happens within those borders. In similar fashion, subtle beauty differs the time of betrayal depicted. You see some beautiful sights alright, such as Emilia Clarke’s black silk dress, but not before a small expositional image shows a Stormtrooper separating a mother from her children.
It proves the production team’s mindset behind Solo: A Star Wars Story: a push for unrealized societal ideas. One of those ideas lies inside the memory system of Lando’s droid, L3-37, who wants to rebel against droid enslavement, so they don’t have to forcibly fight each other—Mike Vick style. It’s not just that this side plot is completely unnecessary to the main plot (which probably doesn’t matter anyway, because there isn’t really one), but the one leading that side plot frankly annoys of Jar Jar Binks proportions. Not to mention despite the last three installments’ achievement in ethnic diversity, essentially all humans, besides Lando Calrissian, are white, setting a step backwards in the Star Wars franchise when it comes to prominent representation across multiple groups.
Ultimately, Star Wars spinoff number two ends up an overly convenient narrative that proves why Han Solo is better off kept carbon frozen, like Harrison Ford wanted years ago.

Is it passable, yes... is it great - not by a long shot. It has a few fleeting moments of greatness, but overall the best way to see this film is with tempered expectations.

It's very inoffensive, safe, and by-the-numbers. So if you got riled-up by The Last Jedi, this won't annoy at you in any way because it's a simple story that logically goes from A, to B, to C - therefore it could be considered a bit bland by some.

But overall it was watchable, and at least I didn't leave the cinema thinking the Star Wars brand had been tarnished (again). All the actors did their job, but no one was a particular stand-out; they just complimented each other (and the script) well.

At the end of the day, it put a smile on my face a couple of times, and that's never a bad thing when it comes to "modern" Star Wars films. Do you need to see it at the cinema? Not really... so that says a lot.

The reason why I give it 'yellow' rating, is the main cast. I am sorry to all who disagree, but the performance of the main cast was just bad, especially next to supporting cast. Woody Harrelson, Paul Bettany, even heavily costumed Joonas Suotamo and Phoebe Waller-Bridge somehow fit more naturally in the movie then the Ehrenreich, Clarke and Glover. These three bring the movie down a LOT and no amount of winks and nods towards camera change that. Expand

Watched in IMAX Waterloo on Saturday.

I did not expect much and was hoping for a good adventure film. I am afraid this film is so average that it is even hard to feel negative about it as it would take it below a 5 - average mark. If any doctor measured my heartbeat throughout the film then they would have recorded a perfectly symmetrical oscillations.

The main issue: The story was weak. At no point did it feel exciting or suspenseful. It was a waste of Woody and Paul Bettany. Khaleesi also felt out of place. There is a bit of a face fatigue there - for all three famous actors here. A new character, unknown quantity, a la Han, would have been better. Lando was another disappointment - trying too hard to be too cool for school but not pulling it off. Start from rubbish dialogue to underwhelming attire. Chewie and his plot arc were also weak. A lot of mental gymnastics went into this film.

There was a welcome appearance at the end of the film but it was too late to save it.

Overall - bland, predictable and a wasted opportunity.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Excellent movie if you have ADS and are into new movies, you know, those generic, all look-the-same feel-the-same-movies. Switch the characters for those of Guardians of the Galaxy and the effect is exactly the same. While it was well directed and put together, it suffers from predictable plot, generic action (except for a couple of sequences) and very boring acting in general. Alden is not a bad actor but c'mon, we all knew Ford's shoes are really hard to fill, and almost impossible in the case of Han Solo. The character is so powerful, it defined and almost typecast Ford's career. The villain here is so generic, "I get aroused when I kill" James Bond mean guy. We also have, of course, yet another posh girl that even looks a lot like Felicity Jones, easily defeating 6 foot men and all. The feminist (droidist?) copilot is rather insufferable, very out of place, it's meant to be funny but it is certainly not. The sexual innuendo "she" plays with Lando is just too much for Star Wars. Then of course is the fact that Lucasfilm has decided to checklist every minutia from the OT, so Han is given his surname in an unceremonious and rushed fashion by an imperial agent, he gets his blaster from Beckett and the ship from Lando. Talk about the deconstruction of the Alpha-Male of the OT. Then the ridiculous but very progressive idea that one of the toughest characters is a 16 year old girl, because they can do everything, right? Even command pirates and raiders. Then comes the subject of cinematography. Enough with the dark movies, enough. Go watch the OT and what made it feel like it is another planet. The new movies suffer from the gray, unsaturated, Netflix-show syndrome, it is depressing (hence, it's for millennials) Disney thinks that hiring Oscar winning cinematographers will give these movies a touch of je ne sais quoi, but no, it just makes them harder to look at. Then comes the final cameo, which by all means is just Disney trying to do fan service full blown. There's no reason for it, no meaning behind it, it messes continuity and future movies, and I love Darth Maul, but this was just awful. you can't ask SW fans to leave their brains at the theater door, we are much more intelligent and discerning than that, and as it gets harder to get people to theaters, Lucasfilm and all the SJW working there really have to try harder if they want my hard earned cash. Sure the movie is gorgeous, but at the same time, it literally drags a lot of focus when Phil Lord & Christopher Miller’s actual direction and script was replaced by someone else different. Hate to say it, but Rogue One was way better than this film by far. Expand

All of the expected elements are here: hectic adventures, weird creatures and jaunty attitudes. Unfortunately, it plays like a bland revisit. Nothing about the script or the action brings anything original or fun. Ehrenreich shows some of the swagger established by Harrison Ford and Glover is OK, but the most memorable presence comes from Emilia Clarke, who's beautiful spirit shines in her every scene. While this film never boring, it's never exciting either. Those who need to stay in the fan loop have probably already seen it. The rest can wait til the next installment and hope for some thrills. "Solo" was doomed from the beginning. Nobody really wanted or needed a Han Solo backstory. With "Rogue One", we actually got one answer to a long-time question: 'How did they destroy the Death Star so friggin' easily?'. "Solo" is a a non-consequential flick, really, anything that happens in this movie feels just OK because it has the "Star Wars" brand on it. The overall color palette of the movie is so hurtful to the eyes (Kinda like those DCEU movies). The actings are all mediocre (Except maybe Harrelson and Bettany). It bored me and almost put me to sleep.

I'm actually surprised that the critics' reviews are pretty decent, albeit lukewarm. I thought they would crucify this one, but turned out not.

It still has your signature action moments you've come to expect in Star Wars movies, and even has some exciting twists that unfold in the third act. But many of the new characters are not interesting or memorable. The film also lacks a sense of conflict/danger for the majority of the first half. It is not until the second half that it finally starts to pick up and gets more interesting. Han Solo's younger interpretation was handled decently, except that the movie is afraid to give him any real character development because it clearly sets up sequels that will probably get made. There is a cameo from a fan favourite character near the end of the movie via hologram that was completely unnecessary and just acted as fan service. In the end, its still an enjoyable ride that will entertain, but it tries too hard to make you laugh rather than telling a compelling story. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie looked disgusting for a large portion, crushed colours, bad colour correction, and poor lighting aplenty. The scene in the coaxium mines was particularly ugly, having had a yellow poorly superimposed in post, and the distracting flashing lights everywhere. Continuing with poor colours, the first third or so of the movie had a hideous colour scheme that was constantly present and invasive. A large portion of the characters was whiny and forgettable, such as the four-armed alien guy. The Chewbacca fight scene was edited in a way that made it almost impossible to follow, due to its abundance of jump cuts and handheld film. The plot was something out of a Skyrim sidequest, being that it was just a fanservice fetch quest. Speaking of fan service, did this movie ever have some to offer, and boy was it distracting, unnecessary, and stupid. Lando and the girl character felt very disingenuine throughout a majority of the movies run time. The plot was a piece of predictable overdone garbage, that felt like it was trying too hard and led only to the fanboys' wet panties. Since fanservice is the only reason anyone sat through this, it is revealed that Darth Maul is back, because why not, death doesn't mean anything anyways. Woody Harrelson was quite the mixed bag throughout this film, delivering some fairly decent quips, but at the same time following up with poor line delivery. This movie was not good, it was an ugly, unnecessary, excuse for a film. If you think you want to see this, you probably have, otherwise, steer clear. Despite this, I can't hate the film, it is clear that the Disney execs held the production of this film with an iron grasp, thus stifling its creative possibilities. Plus I saw this with family, so it was less toxically unbearable at the time. Expand

I don't think I've ever been more indifferent about a movie after seeing it. Once again, a new film taking place within the Star Wars universe feels nothing like Star Wars, and once again a film in the Star Wars universe has an obvious political message within it. Those are likely my biggest complaints about it. The acting was okay all around, and Donald Glover as Lando was pretty good, though there are a few things the writers did with the character that I didn't like. I don't think it would be fair to ask Ehrenreich to do a better job than Ford as Solo, so don't be disappointed when he doesn't.
The story was quite average, and in the beginning it often feels as though the goalpost keeps moving in terms of what the major story arc will be. However as the movie develops it streamlines into a decent plot. I wasn't a big fan of everything they did in the movie, between the political messaging, at times sloppy story, and overall lack of Star Wars atmosphere. But this movie does have its moments, and I would say is probably worth seeing.

Some might argue that it's entertainment but we are talking about Star Wars and one of its most iconic characters and this film, this story doesn't add anything to the legacy of the franchise, let alone the legacy of the character.

Alden Ehrenreich had a devastating and unattainable challenge and evidently he didn't succeed. There's nothing from Harrison Ford's Han Solo in his performance, not even the nerve. I give him credit because he tried, just for that. The same thing happened with Donald Glover, who also felt like a soulless shadow of what Billy Dee Williams did.
The rest of the cast was as disposable as you can imagine, yes even Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Thadie Newton y Paul Betanny.

A very disappointing installment for Star War.

The movie mainly filler (like the scene with the red "Gravity Well thing, which was the biggest example), and is extremely predictable (which is ironic, if you have seen the movie). You receive no attachment to, and almost no development from, the characters outside of the ones that appear later in Star Wars, leading to absolutely no urgency, knowing that everything is going to turn out fine. Any “Big Reveals” (yes there are multiple) have some convenient way out, or some character changes there mind suddenly, and then changes it back at a convenient time. This makes the reveal utterly pointless, since most of the time the problem/“urgency” is caused by this reveal. The movie relies on shock value from pointless, easily reversible reveals to give the audience the false sense of urgency that is also meaningless, since I have mentioned, the only danger is to characters you care nothing about. Then there is the many times they tried to pad the run time. Most of the movie can be summed up in 15 minutes without any of the pointless action sequences and references to earlier movies, like Han doing the Kessler run. (“You did the Kessler run in 15 Parsecs” says character in earlier movie. “TWELVE” says Han and nerds watching.) or meeting Chewbacca, which was an ok scene, which I THOUGHT (in that exact same scene) introduced me to characters that will stay with us for the rest of the movie (in the same one, they introduced 3 more.) only to have 1 of them be remotely important, although not by too much. All that develops about that one person is their opinion of Han, the main character and his allegiances. (Those allegiance changes, again, cause some urgency, but is erased once a convenient way out is revealed, only to change back 8 minutes later at another convenient time. This was the main example of that complaint.) Although, there were some good parts and other things this movie done right, but most of the great parts require heavy spoilers. But the visuals were great, and the humor people were complaining about from “the Last Jedi” has been died down, and is, frankly, pretty funny. Overall, I will still recommend seeing it if you like Star Wars movies, and if you liked the recent ones, (Mainly Last Jedi) you will like this quite a bit. You get to see the backstory of Han Solo, so it will be great for any hardcore, and most casual fans of the franchise. (And if you are one of those hardcore fans, you are likely going to see it anyway.) The movie would have worked to much more success if it wasn’t a prequel, since most of the urgency problems stem from it BEING a prequel. Rogue One (considered by a lot to be one of the greater recent Star Wars movies) handled this well, by introducing new characters and giving them important roles, which is what Solo did but had the lingering problem of being an origin story (which many seem to think is unjustified for Han, but I think he's important enough). And the plot, to be honest, could have been it’s own original movie, and the only big sci-fi scenes are mostly filler. This movie can be fixed by being its own original. Picture this: more modern, dystopian world, where airplane is the primary mode of transportation, where crime runs free, let by powerful organizations, and most of the world is run by an empire-like organization, and the main and one of the most expensive goods is fuel. Better yet, set it in an Earth void of natural resources. You can make the movie into something better, and taking the plot and mixing it with the setting I have presented, and you got yourself Solo, but better. This is not a review to stop you from watching, but to lower your expectations a tad if you don’t have them very low already. Expand

Solo is, to me, the only half decent film that came out in the Disney era, but it still doesn't change the fact that it's a movie nobody wanted that does very little in improving the characters or the universe.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is the story of a street wise rogue who goes into a job for selfish reasons only to then decide to fight the good fight on the side of the oppressed. Basically, Han's character arc in A New Hope. Nobody expects originality from Disney at this point, but even for them the plot of this movie is shameselly recycled. And the characters don't help either. I know it was a near imposible task to find an actor that could capture Harrisson Ford's wit and charisma but even Kathllen Kennedy and her Lucasfilm goons could have found a better lead than this talking buublehead with a balding pattern that they got to play Solo. And Lando is even worse because the writter's idea of portraying the cool and suave Lando is to make him a flamboiant creep who screws robots. And can we finally stop pretending Emilia Clarke can act? The only good thing about her performance is that she will probably have to get naked in GoT to save her career again. The only decent performance is Harrelson's, but even he lacks any chemistry with the main character.

There are good things about this movie though. The first Act is probably the best, showing some cool aliens, a short but sweet war scene, Han's friendship with Chewie and some nice characters that I wish could have stayed longer in the movie instead of being replaced with the **** characters. A lot of people complained about the feminist bull**** in the movie, and while that is true, I found it to not be as bad as in previous films. Sure, the #MeToo droid is annoying and you have the obligatory stronk brown female freedom fighter, but they are not that much in this movie and Han is still the hero of his story. Still, I would say avoid this movie. You are not missing umuch and maybe Disney will finnally fire Kennedy if this flops.

As a conclusion, Solo is a good bonus but it is too classic to be considered as a Star Was movie.

A fun Saturday-morning cartoon.

I had low expectations for this movie, and it delivered almost exactly what I expected, but in the end I enjoyed it. The actors did a pretty good job, despite the big shoes they had to fill. Han Solo was a character that was basically created by Harrison Ford, so finding an actor other than Ford to play Han Solo was a tall order. Alden Ehrenreich did a great job playing a Solo-esq character, but he failed to act exactly like the Han Solo we all know. Same goes for Donald Glover with Lando. That being said, Chewbacca was spot on. The rest of the cast also did a good job playing the original characters. The Effects were good, but not as good as the previous Disney Star Wars movies. There were moments where the CG was obvious, and there were certain scenes that were just plain hard to see due to it being so dark. The individual scenes weren't mind-boggling, but they weren't cringy either. The action bits were well choreographed, and the one-liners got a few chuckles from me.

As for the script, there were a few issues I had. This might be a bit silly, but Han Solo was almost as much of a Marty Sue in this film that Rey was a Mary Sue. There were a few scenes where he fails embarrassingly, but most of his decisions just seem to work out for him. His pilotling skills were epic, yet they never explain how he became such a good pilot beyond "he was a good pilot in the academy". He's also a good shot with a blaster, and quick on the draw, despite having grown up without a blaster and only receiving one on his first big heist. The other part I didn't like about the writing was the politics, though it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. There were a few winks and nods to the social justice crowd, but they were merely one-liners. I found L3 to actually be a funny character as a self-righteous egotistical jerk. Whether that was intentional or not is anyone's guess. If it wasn't for two seconds of choreography in a certain scene, you'd think that L3 saying Lando was in love with her was simply one her being delusional. Also, there's nothing in this movie that suggests Lando is into dudes, so whoever said Lando was pansexual was high. (if anything, he's just into sentient females. He's the same womanizer he presents himself as during his first appearance in Empire). Most of the political stuff surrounding this film comes from the writers mouthing off on twitter (example http://archive.is/AUQvk). If you ignore their bologna, the movie is much more enjoyable.

It seems like how I might imagine the result of someone doing a good job of trying to fix a terrible movie.

The acting was mostly iffy, especially for the actor playing Han, who entirely lacked Harrison Ford's charm, but the the actress playing the female lead Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke) was pretty great despite the material she was working with being no better than theirs. I suspect that a lot of the blame for how badly much of it was done is the fault of those behind the cameras, both directing and writing.

Honestly, I think that this movie was at the level you might see a fairly average Star Wars tv show be at if it did a three parter. I didn't dislike watching it, it just wasn't worth the price of admission.

It also inherently mars our own imaginations of the origins of these iconic characters whereby dictating into concrete such it inevitably fails to live up to the previous hinted back story (as is of course the nature of prequels and sequels for that matter, but they can be worthy if the story is smart and called for as opposed to lazy short hand completeness). The lead actor is functional and not bad, but he's not a standout as Ford was and his performance is indeed just that in that it is mostly an impersonation instead of genuine acting. The movie drags due to the oh so typical formulaic boring non-stop action recipe that the supreme owners think most commercially apt in this day and age.

note: There seems to be a major chronological flaw (attributable to the silly connect the dots mindset) that even if later explained by some stupidity the incompetent chaperones at Lucasfilm should be held accountable for. Kasdan proves once and for all a hack as shown by his last three screenplay efforts compared to the one great one. Howard stepping in is proof the franchise has no directorial authorship whatsoever. And Kennedy who seems to have been chosen to run Lucasfilm purely because she is a likable able business woman and not for her lack of creative clout has got to be Lucas's last worst decision of all.

‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ is a mix bag and feels unimportant. Nothing about it felt thrilling or exciting. Not to say it’s a bad movie, because it’s not. There is good things about it and surprisingly none of the re-shoots showed, it’s not visible like “Justice League”. Unfortunately, the flat jokes and an obvious cash grab for future franchises only left me cold. It adds nothing to the Star Wars universe, just exploring little things we were told about briefly in better movies. Nobody asked for it and yet here we are, so let's dive in.

I couldn't imagine the amount of pressure Alden Ehrenreich was facing. Talking on an iconic character played by the most iconic actor alive today. Must be a daunting task and the fan base didn't help either. His casting was met with a lot of negative reactions - I, however, always stood by Ehrenreich ever since he’s casting, after seeing his breakout performance in “Hail, Caesar!” gave me a little hope for the young Solo. I can safely say that he deserved a good performance and never felt like an impression of Harrison Ford. Portraying him more innocent and naive. Although, I can think of others actors who would've gotten the part and might have done it better. I must admit, there was plenty of times where I kept on forgetting he was Han Solo, but from what he had to work with, he did the best he could and I applaud him for that.

Donald Glover does a great job capturing the mannerisms and the voice of Lando Calrissian. You can tell he put a lot of effort into this role. Even trying to step into the shadow of Billy Dee Williams and he slips right in. While feeling like an impersonation at times, but makes every scene enjoyable to watch, no matter what. Comparing the two actors, you can see this younger version transforming into the older version of the character.

Emilia Clarke was fine. She’s certainly better here than any other movie or role outside from Game of Thrones. I didn't fully buy the chemistry between Emilia and Ehrenreich, and yet, that never took me out of the movie, as it wasn't prequel level bad. I must say, her character could go into an interesting route if Lucasfilm kept they promise of where she could go next from the set up. I’m interested to see where it goes.

The others cast members were also great. Thandie Newton and Jon Favreau, while having small screen time, but brought so much character into their roles that I wished both stuck around a little longer. Same thing with Paul Bettany, who could've been a fantastic villain if more development and screen time was put into his character. I mean, a space gangster with sag sounds amazing. Still, Bettany was excellent and was clearly fun with this role. I’m surprised not a lot of people are talking about Woody Harrelson, who’s great in everything and proven to have a wide range of incredible roles under his belt - Of course here, there’s no difference. Towards the end of the film, I didn't like where he’s character went, but I blame the writing on that, not the actor. What more is there to say about Woody, he’s never given a bad performance.

Ron Howard did the best he could, as a last minute replacement to fix all loose ends. The camera work during the action sequences were visually pleasing and very much his style of film making. Let's not forget the gorgeous cinematography and some fantastic set designs, creature, and droid designs.

Now for my issues with the film: Despite some nice looking shots, the dark color palette and how poorly lit this movie was really surprised me, because it didn't add anything to the story. Some may argue it adds to environment of the story, but to me just made it look worse. Every Time there was a reference, nod or wink from the original franchise it kinda felt, well…’forced’. I saw this almost a week ago and nothing super memorable stuck with me.

Oh and L3-37 is the absolute worst. The character itself is another sassy droid duplicating K-2SO from Rogue One. The difference here, she got on my nerves straight away. The droid rights sup plot kept pushing the main focus away from the actual story itself. Many have pointed out how she came across as a parody of SJW (Social Justice Warrior) and I can see the comparison. It's odd that Disney would do that, being all about diversity and equal rights would make a joke of this. Just replace L3 with Thandie Newton character and everything will be fine.

Overall Rating: “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is a mess saved by a great cast, great production designs, impressive action scenes, and characters (except for L3). I've heard different opinions for this movie - Both sides gave solid arguments and made me realize this movie has it’s fans. Again, not a bad movie, just a decent one.

I understand why Disney wants the Star Wars franchise to take on a darker, grittier tone. Just look at how well that worked out for Nolan's Batman franchise. But just making a film's visual aesthetic literally dark--or perhaps a better adjective in this case would be drab--does not somehow automatically make it gritty. I'll also never understand why nobody involved with the film insisted that Alden Ehrenreich, a talented actor who plays a young Han Solo, take on any of Harrison Ford's signature affectations. Compare this to Donald Glover, who is instantly recognizable as a young Lando Calrissian, and the decision becomes even more maddening. The result is that for over two hours it feels like we're just watching some newcomer to the Star Wars universe do some vaguely Star Wars-like things to impotent effect.

Giving Han Solo, one of the franchise's most popular and important characters, his own film was to be expected. The only problem is that it was hard for me to care about most of the other characters in the film. I knew that they were just "throw-away" characters but their importance was so minimal that I ended up forgetting names after their deaths and/or the films ending. I figure t was to keep the focus, obviously, on Han Solo and the small group that he worked with. Alden Ehrenreich had big shoes to fill but, I didn't worry about how well he did compared to Harrison Ford. I knew that this was a younger, less experienced Han Solo and that's what I got from him. Other performances from Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke and even Chewie were solid. I would say that overall this film was just average at best. Maybe we don't need a Star Wars film every year or maybe we just need to make them more interesting. Expand

Mile high expectations collide with a troubled production and a muddled story to create the least engaging of the modern day Star Wars movies. Not that it is without its charms, but this is the first time I can ever recall shifting in my seat during a Star Wars movie, wondering if there was much more to go. Star Wars must not ever, ever be boring.

Alden Ehrenreich is an actor I've liked for quite some time (I wonder how many fan boys saw his 'sit up and take notice' film "Tetro") but as charming as he is, I never thought of him as more than one of those costume rental website models wearing the "Han Solo".

On the other hand, there's man of the moment, Donald Glover, underused but highly entertaining as Lando Calrissian. I loved his relationship with the de rigeur talking robot sidekick/translator/love interest(!?!).

The producers came perilously close to making him look like a fool (the cape thing, the memoirs) and I actually thought they could have used him to better effect. The gambling for control of the Millenium Falcon carried no intrigue because we all know what the outcome is going to be, so I think a bit more thought could have been given to that.

Full disclosure, I've never watched "Game Of Thrones", so I only know Emilia Clarke as that blonde actor with the dragons on all the HBO ads. She was just fine as Han's first love interest turned Darth Maul moll. And Paul Bettany, so bland in the Avengers films, is slightly better as the pirate king or whatever he was supposed to be. His knives were cool.

One thing that really worked for me was the introduction of Chewbacca and how he and Solo came to be friends (fun fact: when you type Chewbacca and right click to auto-correct, the suggestion is "Backache").

And then there's Woody Harrelson, already one of my least favorite actors. I don't know what it is about his lazy, slurred-speech and generally smug performances, but he always takes me out of a movie, but that's a personal thing. I suppose he was fine. But I would have swapped out him for Thandie Newton's character in a heartbeat (and it might have elevated the film even further, but Woody is a star).

The birth of the rebellion subplot had all the emotional resonance of an Ancestry.com commercial, so I had trouble getting too engaged in that.

But here's what did work for me: the effects were quite good and some of the action sequences were terrific (especially the train robbery). And I honestly shuddered when the Imperial blockade appeared in the the swirling vortex thing during their escape from the hyperspeed slave planet.

Anyway, I'll probably watch it again. Maybe we're just being pummeled with too many 'event movies' these days. "Infinity War" already seems so long ago and "Black Panther" is available in the classics section on Shaw on Demand, isn't it?

This movie is neither good or bad. It takes advantage of the good cast it has with good acting and good dialogue, at times. The relationships make sense, and the chemistry between actors were good.

The start of the movie was really slow, they needed a lot of action to try and pace up the story, action that in the start wasn't well crafted. Sometimes the camera work seemed a bit shaky, and the movie lacked real meaningful stakes, the "main villain" was weak as a character.

The final act was good, that's the part i enjoyed the most, with everyone doubling crossing everyone, showing the real point of the Han Solo character and where the movie was taking it

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Solo is kind of a mix bag. Great acting overall, but the best outlaw characters dies too soon. The story is there but it lacks punchy humour lines. Most of them are formulation and falls flat. The action is very unequal. Some are very good, some have just bad angles and timing. The colouring filters in the first half of the movie is very bad and effectively kills the 3D effect for half the movie. Lack of contrast and colours are problems in this movie. Characters aren't always well exploited, although Woody and Donald do carry the movie because theirs lines are the best. The movie seems to pick up in the middle when you encounter Quira again. From there it's more a good scifi movie with a real goal. More focus. I like the appearance of the real villains in the end. And in my view, I think the movie should have involved Him from the starts. I think also that one of problem of this movie, is that there is no blood, no grits. It's hard to take a movie with war, crimes, villains...seriously when it tries to manage sensibilities for the rating system. I give it a 62%. Not bad, but you feel this movie was in a bad shape at one point and it shows. Second watch opinion: The music wasn't that good until the Kessel point. In fact the film really starts with that mission. The color filters and lighting are very poor in this movie, hiding so many details instead of revealing them. The real villain of Crimson Dawn should have been there from the start. The actors were more then fine but their acting and charisma were badly displayed on screen. Expand

Given all the production problems it faced, Solo: A Star Wars Story is about as good as one could expect it to be. It’s most definitely very flawed, but it’s a suitably fun summer adventure that will satisfy hardcore Star Wars fans.

At it’s core, Solo is just a run-of-the-mill Western/heist movie. Take away the Star Wars aspects to it, and there’s really nothing outstanding or unique about the plot or characters. The story struggles to get off the ground for the first two-thirds or so due to some odd pacing, iffy editing choices, and poorly-written dialogue. These problems persist throughout the entire movie, but the third act makes up for them as it finally gets around to developing the characters. It ends on a high note, but it sure takes what seems like an eternity to get to that point.

The film is near-perfect when it comes to CGI, but the difficulties faced in production become very apparent early on. It’s obvious that Solo was directed by multiple people at different times as some scenes are shot very smoothly and others cut back and forth in a very choppy manner. It’s jarring, and it’s not helped by the fact that the tone of the film is just as uneven as the visual style, often jumping back and forth from serious character building moment to awkward attempts at humour that just don’t work.

The performances are all fine, but nobody stands out as being memorable or noteworthy and, as mentioned before, the characters are all severely underdeveloped until the final act.

All flaws aside, I wouldn’t dare call Solo a bad film. It’s still quite a competently-made movie with more than sufficient talent visible from everyone who took part in its production (with the exception of the screenwriters). It’s conclusion is more than exciting and compelling enough to make it worth watching, even if it is slightly forgettable in the end.

It's not a terrible mess of a film with an unfit lead, and a plot with an incoherent vision. It's just not a GREAT movie. The movie's okay, it has some moments that are fun and entertaining, and it also has some moments that are slow and boring(particularly a big chunk of the second act). I found the movie lacking action and excitement, and the action sequences that were included were lackluster. Although, there is one scene on the film toward the end of the first act that I thought was executed perfectly. Alden Ehrenreich is surprisingly a really convincing young Han Solo. He brings a lot of energy to the film and really makes you believe that he is a young Harrison Ford. Donald Glover does a good Billy De Williams impression, but I really felt he was holding back in his performance. The rest of the cast was okay, I couldn't really care less about them. Other than a few references and nods to the future, nothing really happens in this film(Sidenote: This film completely ruined the Kessel Run for me). toward the end of the film there are some setups and reveals that suggest a sequel is on the way, but by looking at the current box office numbers I doubt that's going to happen. Overall, Solo: A Star Wars Story is an okay film, it's not as bad as you think, but you're not missing out on anything. Expand

But, when a movie ends up being the way "Solo" is, you can't help but feel that something went wrong behind the scenes. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller ('21 Jump Street' and 'The LEGO Movie') were originally set to direct this film, and have so for five months, then they were thrown off the project even though they shot pretty much the majority of the film. Ron Howard ('Apollo 13' and 'A Beautiful Mind') steps in very late into the game and manages to shoot, edit and finalize the movie all while Disney refuses to push back the release date to the typical December time slot that we saw the other three 'Star Wars' films being released to. What is the result? A pretty fun, but forgettable 'Star Wars' adventure that doesn't hold a single memorable scene, quote, or supporting character. It's not "bad", so to say, but, given this franchise's attempt to make things right, this could have been better. Alden Ehrenreich ('Hail, Caesar!') takes on the iconic role of a younger Han Solo after Harrison Ford. We see his rebellious and cocky beginnings, and his first love with a girl named Qi'Ra (Emilia Clarke), but they end up getting separated on Corellia, and a distressed Han is motivated to try and come back for her. He goes on many missions where we see him as a soldier, underneath the command of Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson) who puts Han through many tests. Han also meets a Wookiee who we all know is Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) and they learn to team-up with each other as the duo we know and love from the original trilogy. Later on, Han also meets a charming gambler, Lando Calrissian (a spot-on performance by Donald Glover), and they have their differences, but learn to get along as Han is introduced to the iconic Millennium Falcon. All of these characters end up going on some wild adventures, but for some reason, this adventure isn't as good as the recent ones we saw. Not as heart-pounding or fun like in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' (2015), or tense and gritty like 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' (2016), or visually amazing like in 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' (2017). Much like in other mainstream Hollywood blockbusters we see today, I never once felt that these characters were in danger, just like how I felt when I saw 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' (2017). The stakes are never raised in the way you'd want them to. It's not fair that other film critics are saying that this movie "adds nothing new" to the 'Star Wars' franchise, as it is about the young days of an iconic character from the original trilogy. It should have at least been fun and memorable, but for some reason, the whole movie felt very telegraphed. The love-interest character, Qi'Ra, is also very bland. Despite Clarke's committed performance, there is nothing interesting about her, nor is there anything interesting about the chemistry she has with Han. The reason Han's relationship with Leia worked was because of their constant personality clashes and quirky humor which backed it up. Here, Han and Qi'Ra are a very stale and routine movie couple. The cast do an admirable job to make this movie work, but the screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan (who also wrote; "The Empire Strikes Back", "Return of the Jedi" and "The Force Awakens") and his son, Jonathan Kasdan, could have done with a bit more spice and spontaneity. This is not a bad 'Star Wars' movie (that title still belongs to "Attack of the Clones"), but, as I said before, it's rather forgettable. Expand

For people who grew up with the old Star Wars it's a decent but actually a boring one, despite all the great effort of the cast and effects. Lando was a highlight, Alden was really not as bad as I suspected. It's brave trying to compete with Ford. But the movie feels like one in a attraction park; it's predictable, repeating stuff you already knew and not so emotionally challenging. I'm surprised the script was from Kasdan, it missed spark. It's just really too much fan serviced. Also not a great soundtrack; wanting people to be constantly excited at moments nothing happened... disturbed me a lot, a bit like Pirates of the Caribbean. For Netflix this movie would an ok fit. Don't expect anything, maybe you will enjoy it a bit. A 6 for all the immense effort. Expand

Shocked because of that ending, and happy because I wasn't bad. To bring Darth Maul back into the movies again was a wonderful decision, a decision I did not expect. To have Qira turn against Han was also a great move. When Han kills Beckett you can tell that he is slowly turning into the Han Solo we all know and love. The casting choices did end up good. Enfys Nest was for me a disappointment. She was so cool and badass until she took that mask off, And underneath is a child. The time area that Solo takes place in is awesome, It's a lawless time. In fact, I wanted a little bit more of that. This is an overall good movie. Expand

Donald Glover works as Lando Calrissian but it's just a minor character in the plot... and likes robots, sexually. It's a mediocre movie where for every win there is a lose and pretty bland and not a great continuation of Star Wars' s legacy coming from the controversial Episode VIII.

If you didn't like episode VIII don't bother, if you have nothing to do and have too much money this may be worth a shot. It's fun but ultimately forgettable.

Undoubtedly, the first, second and part of the third act were formally flat, uninteresting, lacking the charm and dynamic wit that one would expect in a great idea like this, nevertheless, the last fifteen minutes are the wonder, is why you paid your ticket, they are, personally, what the whole movie must have been. The thrilling final minutes where all the characters are pretending, the necessary surprise factor, that deceitful and malicious air, powerful pictures, engaging performances, an overwhelming soundtrack and a true Han Solo made up a full-of-personality ending.

Alden Ehrenreich is not the Han Solo we expected. It's true that the actor doesn't have much from where he can hold on tightly to "create" his character, actually, instead of getting under his skin, he seems to perform a well-intentioned but failed tribute to the attractant blackmailer played by Ford, a nice representation on a mold of the character, even though it exceeds him in size. On the other side of the coin, Glover nails it as cheat gambler Lando Calrissian, the personality and feeling that the rapper, actor, screenwriter and a long etcetera gives another of the most emblematic men of the saga are fascinating; unlike Ehrenreich, his interpretation isn't a tribute or a personal adaptation, he's the same character, we see him in his actions, the confidence of his eyes and his glamorous attitude, it's not for nothing that they're cooking up the idea of the first Star Wars film starring a black person, a truly unexpected move. Suotamo's Chewbacca doesn't get a meritorious development since, although he establishes the emergence of his unwavering friendship with Han and shows more Wookiees, his guttural actions don't end up being a source of humor or nostalgia, he's a relegated Chewie; yes, back then, he has had to endure hard slavery for a long time - considering him as a beast - but he never gets the tools to shine as others. Exclusive are those who have the power and experience to judge the cinematography of a seasoned, Oscar-nominated Bradford Young. It's true that there aren't many vivid colors in the frames and sometimes it can be cumbersome to try to understand what's happening on screen because of the palette of opaque, ochre and gray tones, but Young angles to explore new fields with new techniques in order to give a defined personality to a story that gets stuck or, rather, entangled; they say the problems with their work are attributed to a poor calibration of the projectors in the theaters, unable to show in full splendor the high-intensity, low-brightness visuals required by the film. Just like the script, the action sequences and in general the development scenes of the first, second and a large part of the third act, the pictures aren't as aggressively magnetic and engaging as those of "The Last Jedi" or "Rogue One," however, it throws one memorable pic after another along the last fifteen minutes, specifically purposeful angles, dark but perfectly contrasted frames and camera movements able to revive hope. Again, that shows what we expected from this film. Anyway, it's worthwhile to delight our senses and try to find the purpose of the "Arrival" cinematographer with his most commercial release. From my point of view, thank you for a shot etched in my memory by its hurtful beauty, starring Clarke, looking through a fence of pain and illuminated in the eyes by a love that shines from afar. Such happens to the score composed and adapted by John Powell, who leaves much to be desired trying to reach the sound potential of the situations, only showing in those last moments raucously sensory compositions. This is the very first time the twice Oscar-winner editor Pietro Scalia works for Star Wars and although he understands well enough how to play and control the spectator's emotions with films as "Alien: Covenant" or "The Martian" both by Ridley Scott, the final footage, the troubled final footage lacks vividness, spark and emotion even in the seemingly more entertaining sequences. "Solo: A Star Wars Story" directed by Ron Howard - and we all know that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller as well - is the most labile, uneven and controversial entry within the cinematic Star Wars canon all in all. It's short of narrative stunning and direction, an interpretation worthy of the title role, visual and sonorous magnificence, a suitable and personalized tone; this movie needs all this to offer more than a mere heist story to Solo. The dreams and desires of Warsies are condensed in about fifteen minutes, which although they don't manage to be a lift in the face of more than two hours of this irregular space Western, get the hope alive as for the huge potential of the controversial spin-offs of the science fiction franchise by which current science is known.

This movie could have been called anything else, "Jar-Jar: A Star Wars Story" or "Smith: A Star Wars Story", then it might have made more sense and I think hardcore fans wouldn't hate it. Oh well, I've mostly given up on Star Wars. The real Star Wars for me are episodes 1-to-6 and Rogue One (with some mild resentment toward episode 1).
Edit: Upon re-watching Solo, I would say it deserves a slightly higher score. Definitely better than "The Last Jedi" but still just about average.

The problem here has come down to the plot. The story was uninspring and I lost interest midway through. I watched it all and overall enjoyed it but quickly forgot about it and I am not feeling inclined to watch it again. So I will give it 6/10. The plot takes place approximately ten years prior to the events of A New Hope, and explores the early adventures of Han Solo and Chewbacca, who join a heist within the criminal underworld. You shouldn't go into this with the same expectation anyone would have for the sequel trilogy ('The Force Awakens', 'The Last Jedi'). With that in mind, one should be mildly entertained by this movie. The casts did very well in their performance. I do have a problem with the plot though. It is decent, but just is not good enough to make this a good movie. The plots and scenes goes along the style of mindless action type, which I am usually not a fan of. There are some nice twists in the end, but even that feels like forced out of nowhere, implying there is a lack of cohesiveness in its execution.

This is a decent watch on the whole. Just don't expect too much out of this film.

Han looking foward to get her back, he start working for the empire to get money and a ship to rescue here and during the events a lot of thing happen, and a lot of surprises are revealed with a group of thiefs that he ends up in. Directed by Ron Howard. Written by Jonathan Kasdan and Lawrence Kasdan.
This movie first come to answer some questions that no one really asked, some characters that exist and we end up loving them, wich is the case of Darth Vader, when they did the prequels, they completely screwed the character in a way that mostly surely prefer to considered that those movies aren't part of the cronology, in this one they gave a origin of the criminal life of Han Solo, don't worry because it isn't nowhere close as what they did with Anakin in the prequels, but still, i'm not sure if i really wanted to know this story in the way that it was told, it felt rushed, feeling like almost everything that we know about the character happened in one week, the time passing in the movie isn't very well represented. The movie have one aspect that i don't like much anywhere, wich is the convenient coincidence, that one character needs one thing and is looking after that hardly, and suddenly he goes to one place and voilà, there it is, i don't always think that this kind of way to progress the story is lazy. The story overall, beyond those things, contains a bunch of little flaws, like a character that needs to go to a place, but he can't be reconized, so he sends a represented of his assemble, but the represented have a mark in his pulse that directly turns on to him, that was weak. Another weak point was on his name, like damn, considering what happened next on the movies, that didn't made any sense to me. A point at the story that didn't pleased me very much, was the careless about characters, some people die during the course of the movie, and you don't really care, like, they were pretty bad in making you care about most of the characters during this movie, even the main ones, you already know how they are going to end up, so it didn't really end up well in this point. But it ain't all bad, even with all of these problems, we gotta consider that this movie isn't supose to be as deep and emotional as the most others of the franchise, this one actually is more a 2 hour fun with not much depth, the story isn't the most cliche ever, it ain't new, it is more about heists, with plans and stuff, and that worked out very well for me, it was nice to see they assembling and having some plans. Some answers on how something end up in other movies in here was really nice, for me the chewbacca part was very nice, it was fun and surprising, because i didn't expected to him to show or teaming up like that, it was good. Somethings that we really wanted to see was the Kessel Run moment, that is referenced during the whole franchise, and for me it worked very well, it wasn't great to watch, but it was good, it get me to understand better how did that worked and what exactly happened in that circumstance. There are some plot twists in the movie, a bit of those worked, but it got so predictable, that at the same time got ridiculous that how the characters didn't knew by themselves what was going on.
The action of the movie is at least functional, it doesn't have anything special, i didn't got impressed as i'm used to in the star wars movies, it is the basic "pew pew pew" and nothing much further than that. The spaceships and cars moments, in other hand, i really enjoyed, the pilot that Han is, i think it got well represented in here. Another action moments and characters interactions during the movie, for me, did saved it in a lot of moments.
Alden Ehrenreich did a very good job, i gotta say, i got surprised in here, i really liked his impressions most of the time, he could get the mannerisms of Harrison Ford in the character, the little things, in the details, i thinks that it was really nice, there one or two moments that i didn't bought what was going on, but mostly, i think that he did good. Emilia Clarke work very well in romantic moments, in action moments i didn't got very convinced, and neither in her lies during the movie, i knew by far that she wasn't saying the true and got me shocked that the other characters didn't. Donald Glover did good, he convinced me better then anyone that he was the youngest version of that Lando Calrissian by Billy Dee Williams, he got the details very well, the trickery and the confidence was very well portraied. Paul Bettany did well for me, i villain that we don't know when is safe or not.

Solo is an up-tempo rambunctious space venture that pays wondrous tribute to the origins of many beloved Star Wars characters and is the prime reason this film as merit to go see. Donald Glover in particular gives a strong reinvention of the Lando character and most of the performances were genuine memorable performances and not impressions. There is a life within this movie and it rides with these characters, but they're being thrust into a story and vision that has very little coherence or purpose whatsoever. Had this been a mini-series or more evoking vision, Solo would be a wondrous Star Wars story. But the movie itself has really nothing to offer or leave you with. It has many exciting things in it, but aside from the character performances, Solo is better experienced by purchasing the soundtrack, which hails more worth and awe than the movie itself. A hit and miss. Expand

Solo sets out to tell a fitting origin story for one of Star Wars most iconic characters; it tries, and fails. Simple as that. The Star Wars universe is one of infinite potential. With such a unique basis in a sort of spatial technology world with spaceships and unique creatures and robots and lightsabers and the force, you really could keep on expanding the universe forever. But when the arrows in your film’s quiver consist of a boring train robbery scene and an unimaginative prison breakout… you’ve done something wrong. But on top of that, this movie’s narrative is so cryptic; so many things take place without emphasized context. Events happen and are so poorly explained or hinted at beforehand as well as afterwards; and in a franchise where traveling between separate galaxies is a common transitioning tool, cryptic storytelling is the last thing you want to have in your movie. Yet this dude just did this thing and I have no idea why. But another problem with this movie are the characters. A young, restless, rouge Han Solo is what they were going for… but he just comes off as so wooden and shallow; and the supporting characters aren’t even memorable enough to be significant. I think the only redeemable parts of this movie are Chewbacca’s character (Even though correctly writing a character who only ever makes weird sounds and gestures isn’t very impressive) and (my favorite part of the movie) L3. A sort of robot rights-activist which acts as satire of modern radical feminism is such a clever concept; and I was enjoying her presence in the film so much that I was waiting in enthusiastic anticipation for every new scene the movie shot with her because I was hyped to see her reactions and comments on every scenario. She supplied real laughs from me. But she was not enough to save the movie from being cryptic, bland, and boring; and a movie about star… wars… should never be boring. Expand

Disney has full access to the Star Wars universe and continues to attempt to cash in on stories related to that which we have already seen. Regardless, Solo is an above average movie, despite its at times choppy editing, and rushed plot points such as the Kessel Run and Han meeting Chewbacca.

For me, the two brightest characters of the film were Woody Harrelson's Tobias and Emilia Clarke's Qi'ra, and to avoid spoilers, I will leave it at that. I also really enjoyed meeting the leader of the Crimson Dawn, but I doubt we will see a big screen follow up to flush his story out.

Overall, Solo was an above average movie, but nothing overly special.

I have seen another actor, can't remember his name, but he would have been a much better choice. Between a so-so story and the new thing Disney has been doing injecting politics or social justice ideas into their movies, I just couldn't enjoy Solo. A robot fighting for robot rights? This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie failed to make me care. the introduction alone is 55 minutes and the actually story feels like side mission because it is not related to what the character wants. we were told that it would be about Han trying to reunite with his girlfriend but instead it's about going on an adventure to repay a mafia boss. and this Han solo character acts, looks, and is nothing like the one that we know and love in the original series. Han was supposed to be a mysterious confident space pirate with a long mysterious past. that is what made him Han Solo, but in this movie it explained every detail of his life and a bunch of other crap i don't care about and they did it very poorly. listen I don't care how Han got his gun, I don't care how he met Lando, I don't care how he got the falcon, met chewy, became a great pilot, or how he made the Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs or even what that means, because none of it matters. I DO NOT CARE ABOUT HOW HAN SOLO CAME TO BE, I CARE ABOUT HAN SOLO. and this man is not even in the process of becoming him. 4/10 Expand

It is the inverse of the problem I have with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. While that movie’s first two acts are a slog to get through, the third act is excellent and it ends off on a very high note. With Solo, the first two acts are great, but it really falls apart in the third. The pacing slows down to a crawl and you’re just waiting for the movie to end at that point. They really should’ve found a way to streamline the last act to keep up the energy of the rest of the movie. That probably wasn’t possible because of the extremely extensive reshoots, though. Honestly, I’m surprised this movie is as good as it is and not a Suicide Squad-level disaster. Overall, I’m sure this movie will be in my regular Star Wars rewatch rotation, but it’s one of my least favourites. I like most of the movie, but the ending kills it for me. Which is worse? A boring movie with a great ending or an exciting movie with a boring ending? I really don’t know. I have to say, I definitely prefer the Star Wars sequel trilogy to the spinoffs, and I’m very happy to hear that Lucasfilm will be slowing down with the spinoffs in the future. That’s a good move on their part, I think. Expand
