This storyline might have worked as a short, but a feature-length film needs more substance than this.

Ok movie to watch with friends.

Yeah, I know the horror genre doesn't benefit from watching it with friends, but since this film isn't one of those that make me feel scared, that's not a huge thing to consider. I'm not encouraging prejudice, though.

Smile feels bizarre sometimes, but that's it. Somehow, in some scenes, I actually got goose pimples. But unfortunately, the full potential it had was not reached. I believe true psychological horror movies have something in common: never-ending suspense. It's like, they develop the trama with horror elements and when you think the plot is gonna blow, they keep introducing **** at us. Hereditary is the perfect example of this. No need for dumb jump-scares, gore exaggeration, or bizarre CGI monsters. Our mind does this job when the trama itself is crazy enough. Jaws proved it.

Here, not even one jump scare works for me. The smiling scenes are only bizarre due to the uncanny valley. Gore itself is not enough when you don't care about the person getting stabbed. Also, the worst thing about this movie is the plot. If you watched If Follows, you get it fast asf. The only thing different is the message.

I know, watching it with friends is not fair to this film, but it is what it is. At least, I got curious about the ending and it caught my attention.

The emptiness of it is — I think — what really burned me the most. Instead of doing something different, saying something effective or fulfilling your protagonist's arc in a satisfying way, we're left with the conclusion that we all expect and don't want. Again, this is a real shame because I think what precedes this ending is frequently disquieting, but not in the way the movie may have intended. I honestly found all the scares involving the titular element to either be bland or unintentionally funny. The honest-to-God disturbing moments in this movie lie within the bouts of psychological horror littered throughout, not the supernatural ones. Watching Sosie Bacon's character lose her grip on reality was truly scarier than anything else, and the actor gives quite a commendable performance as well. Still, though, the ending really just soured things for me. Overall, a valid effort from everyone involved. Just didn't stick the landing for me. Expand

Dr. Rose Cotter is haunted by strange and frightening phenomena. Assailed by the terror that takes over her life, Rose will be forced to confront her past in order to survive and escape a new and chilling reality.
This horror is no different than the most common low-level commercial horror. Pyrotechnic direction that aims, with outdated techniques, to scare by looking for the most banal clichés and leitmotifs of the genre: overdose of jump scares and reckless use of the soundtrack. A terrible movie more than terrifying.

Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) is just about to finish a shift at work when she witnesses a bizarre and traumatic incident involving a patient. Soon after she begins experiencing truly frightening occurrences and visions that she can’t explain. Rose is now forced to confront her grim past in order to survive whatever it is that’s haunting her.

Smile is a movie that will scare you throughout the entire thing. It delivers on the many, many jump scares and it has enough dark undertones running throughout to separate it from other more generic horror movies. It has a lot of elements in it that you’ll recognise from various other horror movies, the most recent one that came to mind was It Follows. But where It Follows fails Smile succeeds. The third act is where many horrors fall down on, becoming ludicrous and silly. Rest assured with Smile, this is certainly not the case. It puts the audiences in a state of unease very early on and keeps putting on the pressure until the climax. All the while keeping the jump scares coming and using unsettling scenes to shock and unnerve you.

Sosie Bacon is a great lead and elevates the entire film. We also need to acknowledge all the actors used to give that nightmarish smile, creepy doesn’t even cover it. All you seasoned horror fans will see the jump scares coming and there’s no big twists but that doesn’t mean you won’t have a good time along the way. Even I jumped a couple of times. Also the poor woman next to me clearly wasn’t able for this, lots of screams and genuine terror so if you’re not able to sit through a tense, scary movie with plenty of jump scares then Smile might just be too much for you.

Sure it’s Halloween season now so if there’s a new horror in the cinema get yourselves there and sit back for a good scare. Many of you know by now that I love a good horror and I’d never recommend a bad one, and sure Smile hasn’t earned a place in the hall of fame or anything like that but it’s a decent horror that all you fans out there are going to like. Recommended for the horror movie fanatics.

To start, Smile is OK.

I personally judge the quality of a show or movie by how many times I stop while watching it. I started watching early in the morning (my schedule is constantly changing) on Saturday and it took till early in the morning on Monday to finally get through it all. With at least a dozen stops along the way. Yes its my own ADD but ADD has been a pretty solid gauge for entertainment quality.

Now that said, there is still something here smiling back. Something that keeps drawing you back in even as it lulls. Maybe its my personal connection to being trained in psychology. But regardless I never stopped wanting to finish it(outside of "birthday gift") Its not the best movie you have ever seen. Its pretty much bog standard for suspense driven horror. Like The Ring before it. It checks all the major boxes. So if you dont put a lot of thought into it there is a decent time to be had here. The fact I finished it is high praise given how run of the mill it otherwise is. Yet, we have all sat through so much worse.

5.25 seems the most accurate rating for it. Ever so slightly above average, and yet still pretty much watchable.

Whether it's that the horror genre is in such bad shape that films as basic as this are being lauded as good by the critics, or the fact that this is what mainstream audiences have accepted as the norm. That jumpscares are what counts for them as an experience to be enjoyed when it comes to horror.
Both are equally troubling, but to be fair, Smile is but another symptom of the disease, and what a mediocre attempt it is.

I would either stay away or rent it for 4$ at home. The movie starts really freaking good! But its almost mid way through the movie that it becomes cringe and dramatic with terrible effects that destroyed the experience, its like the producer or someone said that its too dark and we need to tone it down a lot and just make it extremely generic and get this movie out. I had two friends recommending me this movie, and again I understand who not to listen to, those friends also recommended “nope” and that also is on the same level as “smile”. Expand

This was sorely disappointing and it had a horrible ending. The psychosis factor was pretty intriguing but they dropped the bottom out on this at the end. Not the best horror of the year and for the hype, very disappointing.

To it's credit, the gore and creature effects are actually this films one highlight. I guess this is a slight spoiler (but not really) but I don't know if I'm just jaded but I'm Sooooooooooooooooooooo bored of movies where everyone in the protagonists life absolutely refuses help, understand or even properly listen to them instead of insisting they are losing their mind. (got to make sure they are isolated etc... well trodden and tedious now.)

Smile is a horror film directed by Parker Finn in his feature directorial debut. For someone's directorial debut, this is very impressive.

There are deeply unsettling visuals and proper tension. The movie is reliant on jump scare and it can get tedious. However, there is a fair amount of jump scare with good build-up and payoff which did scare me. I also love the sound design in this film. The director uses it effectively to create a creepy feeling. The first 2 acts of the film are well done. We see our main character Rose (Sosie Bacon) slowly descend into madness as the 'curse' becomes more prominent. On that note, Sosie Bacon is phenomenal as the main lead. She gives a convincing performance of someone who is losing their mind.

Nevertheless, this film falls into a lot of the generic tropes of a horror movie. Its plot isn't original, you've seen it in films like It Follows and The Ring. It has a lot of the same beat-for-beat elements you've seen a dozen times. Even the ending is something you have seen in other horror movies. The main character also says and does incredibly stupid things. There are also moments in this film that are unintentionally funny and silly but are meant to be serious moments. Overall, it is a well-made horror film, especially for a director's first film. Still, it never really goes beyond a generic horror movie. If you want something different in the horror genre then this is not it. I still look forward to what Parker Finn does next though because he is very promising!

Parker Finn and his debut feature run through two incompatible narrative lines: the first one is inspired by Klee's 1940 painting "Tod und Feuer", where pain and death are represented by a grin, an existentialist awareness (evil as "malheur", crisis of meaning) that Rossellini made collide with its psychiatrization in "Europa '51". Didactic film, but on the other hand humanity tends to defend itself from the contagion with this awareness either by repressing it, that is, by mutilating the reality principle, or, even worse, by adapting with insensitivity, cynicism and cruelty. The second one is instead that of the simple concatenation of particular events (suicides, traumas, feelings of guilt), thus contributing to the repression process mentioned above.
