Surprisingly scary and also a very fun ride. Whilst not groundbreaking at all for a horror movie, everything it did was very effective. Cast performances were awesome too. Would recommend.

Can be preodictable, Smile is a solid horror flick that focuses on a personโ€™s internal struggle and pasts the nightmare like a disease. Itโ€™s a manipulating film that tricks the audience into seeing stuff that could be real or not. The enemy is the mental version of John Carpenterโ€™s The Thing, in which it causes torment from within. Director Parker Finn and actress Sosie Bacon execute the movie with precision and suspense that guides the audience into a direction, then jerks them in the opposite direction. The Movie does have predictable horror themes, but at the end, (a lot like The Thing) the nightmare is never fully extinct. Expand

Smile creates something new with many old time resources, without innovating in the process, but composing a very fun to watch movie, that knows how to make you jump off your seat in very clever ways.

Honestly, I went into this movie not expecting to like it, but I ended up liking it at the end of the day.

I find that some horror movies make their protagonists unlikable or very boring, but Rose Cotter is a protagonist that I care about. The plot is nothing particularly special, but they get very creative with the jumpscares and scare tactics, which will keep this relentless feeling inside of you for just about every scene. I got so scared by this movie that I got a leg cramp and had to walk off the cramp, which made my friends laugh hysterically, thinking that I was gonna leave the theatre LMAO. But seriously I cannot stress enough how well this movie talks about and portrays mental health, and how suicide can affect an individual.

The only part I don't really like about this movie is how it ends, the ending could've been done better, in my opinion.

And so I give it a 8 for great! I'd say more like a 9 to counter the idiotic 0-3 scores, but hey, not everyone has good taste in horror. Those are probably the same people who gave the god awful Halloween Kills a 10. Smile and Barbarian are the two best horror movies of the year, BY FAR, and I'm sure Terrifier 2 will be even better!

Following quite literally in the footsteps of the previous effort, Smile broadens the titular premise into a fully fleshed out and enjoyable horror piece. Standout performances include the lead of Sosie Bacon, supporting actor Kyle Gallner, and the ever illustrious but underused Robin Weigert. While the film dips several toes into well worn genre tropes, is a tad overlong, and will not be amongst its more groundbreaking peers, Smile brings it's own color to the spectrum and it stands out from the majority of the pack of this years horror/thriller offerings. Ok movie to watch with friends.

Yeah, I know the horror genre doesn't benefit from watching it with friends, but since this film isn't one of those that make me feel scared, that's not a huge thing to consider. I'm not encouraging prejudice, though.

Smile feels bizarre sometimes, but that's it. Somehow, in some scenes, I actually got goose pimples. But unfortunately, the full potential it had was not reached. I believe true psychological horror movies have something in common: never-ending suspense. It's like, they develop the trama with horror elements and when you think the plot is gonna blow, they keep introducing **** at us. Hereditary is the perfect example of this. No need for dumb jump-scares, gore exaggeration, or bizarre CGI monsters. Our mind does this job when the trama itself is crazy enough. Jaws proved it.

Here, not even one jump scare works for me. The smiling scenes are only bizarre due to the uncanny valley. Gore itself is not enough when you don't care about the person getting stabbed. Also, the worst thing about this movie is the plot. If you watched If Follows, you get it fast asf. The only thing different is the message.

I know, watching it with friends is not fair to this film, but it is what it is. At least, I got curious about the ending and it caught my attention.

The emptiness of it is โ€” I think โ€” what really burned me the most. Instead of doing something different, saying something effective or fulfilling your protagonist's arc in a satisfying way, we're left with the conclusion that we all expect and don't want. Again, this is a real shame because I think what precedes this ending is frequently disquieting, but not in the way the movie may have intended. I honestly found all the scares involving the titular element to either be bland or unintentionally funny. The honest-to-God disturbing moments in this movie lie within the bouts of psychological horror littered throughout, not the supernatural ones. Watching Sosie Bacon's character lose her grip on reality was truly scarier than anything else, and the actor gives quite a commendable performance as well. Still, though, the ending really just soured things for me. Overall, a valid effort from everyone involved. Just didn't stick the landing for me. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Smile is definitely one of the best horror movies I've seen. The sound and music was just exceptional, it made this one of the most unnerving movies I've ever seen and things I've ever heard. Parker Finn's direction and writing was just outstanding; loved the use of misdirection and the underlying theme of struggling with trauma and mental health issues and how it can eat away at you and not only hurt you but others around you if you can't find a way to deal with it. Sosie Bacon's performance was just stellar and I also Caitlin Stasey gave a pretty great performance too. The practical effects for the The Smile Monstrosity was awesome and so creepy. Smile really was so much more then I expected. Expand

This horror is no different than the most common low-level commercial horror. Pyrotechnic direction that aims, with outdated techniques, to scare by looking for the most banal clichรฉs and leitmotifs of the genre: overdose of jump scares and reckless use of the soundtrack. The sound design and music is on point and the camera work is pretty unique. The end was a bit mindblowing, but for what it wanted to be, a little too huge. One cgi effect wasn't looking that much, but what schould they do with 17 million dollar. Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) is just about to finish a shift at work when she witnesses a bizarre and traumatic incident involving a patient. Soon after she begins experiencing truly frightening occurrences and visions that she canโ€™t explain. Rose is now forced to confront her grim past in order to survive whatever it is thatโ€™s haunting her.

Smile is a movie that will scare you throughout the entire thing. It delivers on the many, many jump scares and it has enough dark undertones running throughout to separate it from other more generic horror movies. It has a lot of elements in it that youโ€™ll recognise from various other horror movies, the most recent one that came to mind was It Follows. But where It Follows fails Smile succeeds. The third act is where many horrors fall down on, becoming ludicrous and silly. Rest assured with Smile, this is certainly not the case. It puts the audiences in a state of unease very early on and keeps putting on the pressure until the climax. All the while keeping the jump scares coming and using unsettling scenes to shock and unnerve you.

Sosie Bacon is a great lead and elevates the entire film. We also need to acknowledge all the actors used to give that nightmarish smile, creepy doesnโ€™t even cover it. All you seasoned horror fans will see the jump scares coming and thereโ€™s no big twists but that doesnโ€™t mean you wonโ€™t have a good time along the way. Even I jumped a couple of times. Also the poor woman next to me clearly wasnโ€™t able for this, lots of screams and genuine terror so if youโ€™re not able to sit through a tense, scary movie with plenty of jump scares then Smile might just be too much for you.

Sure itโ€™s Halloween season now so if thereโ€™s a new horror in the cinema get yourselves there and sit back for a good scare. Many of you know by now that I love a good horror and Iโ€™d never recommend a bad one, and sure Smile hasnโ€™t earned a place in the hall of fame or anything like that but itโ€™s a decent horror that all you fans out there are going to like. Recommended for the horror movie fanatics.

To start, Smile is OK.

I personally judge the quality of a show or movie by how many times I stop while watching it. I started watching early in the morning (my schedule is constantly changing) on Saturday and it took till early in the morning on Monday to finally get through it all. With at least a dozen stops along the way. Yes its my own ADD but ADD has been a pretty solid gauge for entertainment quality.

Now that said, there is still something here smiling back. Something that keeps drawing you back in even as it lulls. Maybe its my personal connection to being trained in psychology. But regardless I never stopped wanting to finish it(outside of "birthday gift") Its not the best movie you have ever seen. Its pretty much bog standard for suspense driven horror. Like The Ring before it. It checks all the major boxes. So if you dont put a lot of thought into it there is a decent time to be had here. The fact I finished it is high praise given how run of the mill it otherwise is. Yet, we have all sat through so much worse.

5.25 seems the most accurate rating for it. Ever so slightly above average, and yet still pretty much watchable.

That jumpscares are what counts for them as an experience to be enjoyed when it comes to horror.
Both are equally troubling, but to be fair, Smile is but another symptom of the disease, and what a mediocre attempt it is.

I forbid her to watch it, but her friends peer pressured her into it (classic Amiee always trying to be the queen bee). When my darling cecil came out of the cinema I got a call from her and she was absolutely livid. She wailed down the phone and I had to come and pick her up. As soon as I got there I saw a bunch of traumatised teen girls & had to drive all of them home. This was 3 WEEKS ago- and she has slept in my bed ever since. I tried to take her outside the house for a walk, but she refused. Well now I am paying ยฃ200 a hour for a trauma therapist and she said she has never seen a reaction this terrible. It has nothing to say beyond insulting mental health, trauma, and recovery and has an incredibly cynical and nihilistic ending that is just a gross bummer. There are some sharp comedic moments that work, but mostly I found myself laughing AT the movie instead of with it. It also continues the trend of "horror movie cutting to credits with a song from the 50s/60s that completely contrasts the tone of the film." However, unlike say Hereditary or the recent Barbarian, where those films earn the moment, Smile just throws it on because it wants to be thought of as all these other, far better films. If you love loud scores, jump scares, and a bland plot that plays out until it's dumb end, check this out. Expand

Los efectos especiales podrรญan haber sido mejores.
ยท Conclusiรณn: no te llega al alma, algรบn fallo de coherencia dentro de su propio "lore" y una regular conclusiรณn, la convierte en algo mรกs de cine de terror palomitero y no en lo que pretendรญa ser.

Smile is a horror film directed by Parker Finn in his feature directorial debut. For someone's directorial debut, this is very impressive.

There are deeply unsettling visuals and proper tension. The movie is reliant on jump scare and it can get tedious. However, there is a fair amount of jump scare with good build-up and payoff which did scare me. I also love the sound design in this film. The director uses it effectively to create a creepy feeling. The first 2 acts of the film are well done. We see our main character Rose (Sosie Bacon) slowly descend into madness as the 'curse' becomes more prominent. On that note, Sosie Bacon is phenomenal as the main lead. She gives a convincing performance of someone who is losing their mind.

Nevertheless, this film falls into a lot of the generic tropes of a horror movie. Its plot isn't original, you've seen it in films like It Follows and The Ring. It has a lot of the same beat-for-beat elements you've seen a dozen times. Even the ending is something you have seen in other horror movies. The main character also says and does incredibly stupid things. There are also moments in this film that are unintentionally funny and silly but are meant to be serious moments. Overall, it is a well-made horror film, especially for a director's first film. Still, it never really goes beyond a generic horror movie. If you want something different in the horror genre then this is not it. I still look forward to what Parker Finn does next though because he is very promising!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a fun horror movie to watch, made in 2022. The movie can be said to be the scourge that follows people in the simplest way. It reminded many people like me from the movie "It Follow". Again, the movie "Fallen" was about a similar follow-up. The movie is good, it is watched with curiosity, and it gives tension from time to time. Especially the first scene is perhaps the most striking part of the movie. I also loved the surprise scenes. It deserves its rating.

That dirty laughing thing could have been shown more. I also liked the finale. I think that's how it was supposed to end.

I kept thinking how do I know the woman in the lead role. Kevin Bacon's daughter is out. Is he so similar to his father?

There is no sex or nudity in the movie.

Parker Finn and his debut feature run through two incompatible narrative lines: the first one is inspired by Klee's 1940 painting "Tod und Feuer", where pain and death are represented by a grin, an existentialist awareness (evil as "malheur", crisis of meaning) that Rossellini made collide with its psychiatrization in "Europa '51". Didactic film, but on the other hand humanity tends to defend itself from the contagion with this awareness either by repressing it, that is, by mutilating the reality principle, or, even worse, by adapting with insensitivity, cynicism and cruelty. The second one is instead that of the simple concatenation of particular events (suicides, traumas, feelings of guilt), thus contributing to the repression process mentioned above.

I get it, horror perverts the familiar but smiling is not scary. In real life I'm sure it'd be offputting but here it just does not work. There are no stakes. I laughed more at it than jumped. Some moments here and there were decent, but the movie takes itself deathly seriously to diminishing returns. I like popcorn horror but this is kernel horror.
