Aprendiendo a ser superhéroe

Sumario

Learning to be a superhero

Summary

Review:

Billy Batson (Asher Angel), is a teenager who since childhood has been escaping from their transit homes and foster families to find his mother. Shortly after starting to live in Philadelphia with the last one, he fortuitously acquires super powers and an adult body (Zachary Levi), falling into the crosshairs of a fearsome villain, Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong).

Shazam! it recovers a certain spirit of the youth films of the 80s thanks to its playful spirit. It is a story about the origin myth of a superhero (and also of his nemesis) and his learning path in a comedy tone that, although it does not evade the rugged or sad aspects of the family stories of Batson and Sivana, never let them take center stage by overshadowing the tone, cutting them off with effective touches of humor (a bit in the manner of Tim Burton's Batman Returns). Fortunately, by not making concessions in this regard, the film directed by David F. Sandberg departs from the gravity and solemnity of many superhero films of the last decades. And the humor that he displays is not cool or self-conscious either.

In addition to the enmity and struggles with his enemy Dr. Sivana, the other (and perhaps main) axis of the film is Billy's friendship with Freddy (Jack Dylan Glazer, the protagonist of the series We Are Who We Are, de Luca Guadagnino), one of his “brothers” in the transit home, who accompanies him in his apprenticeship as a superhero. Precisely the most interesting and successful part of the film is the description of that bond, of a double dynamic for Freddy since it implies being a friend of the same person who can manifest himself as someone of the same age and as someone in an adult body and not so much the mismatches that Billy himself has with his new and extraordinary situation. You can even read the occasional provocative subtext in those situations.

The action scenes and special effects are very well resolved and in keeping with the tone of the film, the pace does not falter and the performances are very good, particularly that of the brilliant Jack Dylan Glazer, whose character breathes and articulates the humanity of everything. the story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Shazam is a great movie that offers up something that makes you feel like a kid again and knows how to illustrate the differing emotions required for each scene, whether it be the boardroom scene with Dr Sivana or the scene where Billy Batson finds his long lost mother. Also the message of family in the movie is brilliantly told, and Zachary Levi really pulls off the mannerisms of a kid and gives a brilliant performance as well as the likes of Mark Strong who pulls off playing a sympathetic villain really well. All in all this is a great film with brilliant characters and a simple yet well delivered message that should've gotten more attention when it released and is one of the best recent live action DC movies in years. He can switch between characters with the uttering of the movie's title. In addition to the usual tropes and tangles, this film gets most of its comic energy from the teen angle: the 2 best friends are nerds and trying to figure out how to use these recently-acquired powers (and his grown-up body). Although it's not especially funny and the action sequences aren't original, the spunky energy and lively characters make it an enjoyable entry to the genre, especially for family audiences. NOTE: There's one bonus scene after the closing titles, then another (not worth it) after the credits. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While I still think that Man of Steel and even BvS are overall better movies, Shazam is still a very strong entry in the DCEU and one of the best superhero movies in years. And that's because it's not exactly a superhero movie but more of a 80's kids movie starring a superhero. With all the cheesiness, heartfelt moments and a few dark ones as well.

The trailers really made the film seem like a dumb comedy, but even though it's mostly lighthearted fun, I was surprised to see that it has a lot of dramatic moments and even some pretty dark ones that makes me wonder how they got away with it in a kids movie. After all, not many family friendly superhero films have as villains demons that embody the seven deadly sins and bite peoples heads off. But the best quality of Shazam is how it knows when to do comedy, drama and action without breaking the tone. So there are no serious dramatic moments ruined by crappy jokes 30 seconds later. The characters are good, the acting is decent enough and the villain is one of the best we've gotten in recent years.

Unfortunatelly, there are issues that stop this film from being great, mainly the writting. First, it's the protagonist. He's a pretty fun character and well acted by both the adult and the kid, but he is pretty inconsistently portrayed. He actually seems more mature as a teenager than he is in the adult form. And then there are the rest of the kids. The movie doesn't spend a long time developing their relationship with the protagnist, Billy, so when the time comes for him to finally accept that they are his new family it seems pretty forced as he barely interacts with most of them. Also, the moment when they all turn ino Power Rangers at the end is corny as hell. The movie should have spent more on these characters and Billy instead of the overdrawn action climax at the end.

But despite all its problems, Shazam is so far the most entertaining movie of the year. DC seems to be on a roll latelly and who knows, maybe if they keep putting up good movies with no SJW crap in them they might take Marvel's place after Endgame.

Truly the sweetest and most wholesome adaptation in the DCEU catalogue to date, "Shazam!" soars high on the absolutely winsome and hilarious lead performance from Zachary Levi, and an ultimately fresh concept in play. Not only does the "Big-esque" angle lend for a number of almost endlessly entertaining comedic bits, but the whole interpretation of family at the film's center ends up feeding into an emotional core that surprised me more than anything else. Above being an absolute laugh riot, a thoroughly engrossing origin story, and a performance showcase on the part of Zachary Levi, "Shazam!" is also a movie that cares about what it's trying to say. And that means a lot. Expand

My only negative point in the movie is the character of the kid "Billy", I didn't see any match between him and "Zachary", "Billy" is so depressed and serious, in contrast, "Zachary" is so funny and talkative!!! I think "Freddy" character is more fit for this role instead of "Billy" character.

Finally, "Shazam!" is generally fun and worth to watch, beside it's suitable for all kids.

Shazam! is a funny superhero movie (although not as funny as, say, Deadpool), and an homage to one of the oldest and least known superheroes in the history of comic books. This is the original Captain Marvel, who has to call himself ShazamShazam! is a funny superhero movie (although not as funny as, say, Deadpool), and an homage to one of the oldest and least known superheroes in the history of comic books. This is the original Captain Marvel, who has to call himself Shazam nowadays due to an old DC lawsuit against its creators for copying Superman and the Captain Marvel name having been trademarked by Marvel Comics.

This movie may not be the most original in its genre (ironically Shazam and Doctor Sivana's dynamic resembles that of Superman and Lex Luthor, a superhero against a bald and mad scientist), but makes up for it with a funny and touching script themed around family. True to this theme, the movie even introduces Shazam's (or rather, Captain Marvel's) Marvel Family. In juxtaposition, Shazam's enemy Doctor Sivana has clear family issues. Sure there are a few plot missteps here and there (particularly the sub-plot about Billy Batson's mother which could have been handled in a better way), but it's mostly a great story. There are also a few connections with the wider DC universe, culminating in a faceless Superman making a silent cameo in the ending. In the mid-credits scene, the movie introduces Mister Mind, one of the most obscure DC villains.

Zachary Levi is great as Shazam, but I loved the buddy duo of Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer as Billy Batson and Freddy respectively. Mark Strong and Djimon Hounsou weren't as good in their roles as Doctor Sivana and the wizard Shazam.

I liked this movie and definitely want a sequel.

Oh boy(!),the things you can do with an almost $100 Million budget…

It’s hard to know what Warner Bros. and DC are trying to do as of now… Yeah, they’re trying to be bright and colorful after a grimy start (even if that means both Batman V Superman’s Ultimate Cut and Wonder Woman had that tone and were still 24k Gold),but yeah. I can assure you they did it. They finally made a good movie that isn’t a CG Fest or one Production Hell of a movie that tries hardcore to ride the Slappy Go-Lucky Marvel tone.
“Shazam!” is fantastic and joyous and energetic and yes,it’s the Superhero version of Big. That mixed with Superman The Movie. If anything,I’ll remember it for the child actors. Hell yeah, these boys and girls are some of the best child actors I’ve ever seen on film (alongside Us and The Last Crusade). It’s such a breath of fresh air, considering the movie I saw last week has some of the more annoying child actors. Zachary Levi is having a lot of fun as Shazam and you can tell he cares about the role.
The story also gives a subplot for Billy Batson (Asher Angel),which is so rare in this kind of movie (again, even for a movie with child actors as main leads) while it’s this big story about Learning to be a hero. Unlike the other Origin Stories,it’s probably going to be my main go-to when I’ll make some Action Comics (just like how Marvel watches Superman The Movie for inspo). Unlike Captain Marvel,no limitations with the Screenplay and they have so many liberties with it,which makes me think Warner was like “Ehh,no one knows this superhero, let’s just let the writers screw around with whatever contraption they have…”. But also, nothing great about VFX work. It’s just there.
The score by Benjamin Wallfisch (Blade Runner 2049,IT and the upcoming HellBoy) is so 80’s or 90’s,you can’t help it,but compare it to Superman The Movie. I’m not saying it as a bad thing, but more of it as a compliment. The joyous and adventurous bits that swell throughout the movie...
Surprisingly enough, the movie manages to get brutal. Human Decapitation happens in here, and it’s half-great and half-expected,coming from the same director of Annabelle Creation.
That mostly happens with the villain, which is also the weaker part of the movie. Sure,he has powers and acts as a villain (and some spoilery stuff I won’t talk in here),but it’s mostly a Villain that is there for the sake of the movie, and also to mirror most of the Hero’s powers.
And some moments happen for Plot Convenience (which I really despise). But then again, you’re in the theater to have fun,and that’s what matters coming from “Shazam!”:A not so serious (literally) Superhero Movie that has some genuine heart put into it. There’s a cameo in this movie that will blow minds for sure (just like the last Superhero Movie I saw). What more do you want from that?

With movies like Aquaman and Shazam DC are starting to find their footing and I look forward to more from the .

In short the story of Shazam is about this boy with a pure heart gets powers from a wizard, now the movieis not too different from this premise but there is a little twist to it without spoiling much the pure heart thing goes a different direction and I liked that. Billy Batson played by Asher Angel did a good job, the dude is a good actor and him Jack Grazer who played Freddy Freeman, Billy's friend and adopted brother and Zachary Levy carried tnis movie. All of them had charm, wit and had very good emotional scenes when needed. Zachery Levy was good as Shazam you actually believed he was a child in a mans body , he also looked cool, goofy, funny and charismatic in the role so that's a big up.

The side characters like Billy's adopted brothers and sisters were okay until the last act when something really cool happened I didn't suspect with all those characters and DC nalied it perfectly. The action to be honest was subpar and there weren't any memorable action sequences maybe some flashy moments when Shazam used his powers but the action was forgettable not necessarily bad but nothing spectacular. The tone and pacing of the movie was done really good, the overall tone of the movie was light-hearted and fun but emotional and serious when needed to be and you can't ask more than that. The first half took time to flesh out the characters and to have fun,be silly and didn't take itself seriously especially Shazam and Freddy. The move really nailed the concept of "what would a kid do if he had superpowers" and the movie portrayed that point nicely. Although the second half was really slow and the action was underwhelming, the story was great, suprising and slightly unpredictable along with its convincing character development.

Like a said the movie had a lot of heart as you cared for the characters and they motivations, even the villain Doctor Sivana and the story arcs get resolved pretty satisfyingly. Now the villain Doctor Sivana played by Mark Strong had a pretty good story and the beginning of the movie and had a pretty compelling reason to beba villain he just turned out be be meh and generic by the end, Mark Strong was awesome but the character wasn't developed any further.

The movie didn't have anything that was majorly bad but the pacing during the second half of the movie was rather slow and the action overall was underwhelming. Also the CGI was really good throughout the movie until the had to put some CGI on a certain character's muscles with was kinda bad but not completely terrible. The humor was also well timed and funny and not forced unlike some Marvel movies(sorry I just had to say it).

I really enjoyed Shazam it was a very good movie, with a great story, funny comedy and the most interesting thing you can take away is it had heart, not the action or comedy but this DC movie had a lot of heart and I hope more DC movies continue on with this trend.

Even at average this is Still miles better than BvS or Man of Steel, although MOS generally gets a little leeway from me as well as most people for being an entry point in to the DCEU.

The Good
The cast was really great when it came to acting. The Child actors did not grind my gears too much, so I know they were really good. Shazam as a hero was OK aside from a few gripes I will get to later. The darker undertones to Billy's story was complex and yet it I appreciated to see them not going full silly or full depressive and the movie's writing struck a good balance between being funny, dark and heartfelt.
Mark Strong was a high point for me as an actor, since he seemed to be having the most fun getting into the skin of a obsessed whacko besides the fact that the villain was written bland and he did the best he was given.

The Seven Deadly Sins had some very interesting designs, very Lovecraft inspired; though the camera seemed to shy away from them which kind of confused me. Coming to the VFX it was pretty good for most of the scenes one or two things would look a little wierd but there was a lot more good than wierd bad.

The Bad
DCEU still seems to be having a hard time getting their heroes in a satisfying ' Hero helps the civilian's Scene' aside from Wonder Woman who nailed that, this is the only area I felt this movie was lacking.

And Since This IS a super hero movie it was quite the issue for me as I was starving for some proper hero action from Shazam through out my watch. I do get he is a kid and living a tough and hard life as we see, but any normal kid through similar experiences will have an itch to be helpful at some point if he becomes a superhero. We needed to see such scenes before the third act where Billy actively tries to do the superhero thing, instead of dumping it all in the end.
This does not mean the fun and child like humor that we see Billy/Shazam experiencing should be cut out or replaced, rather it needed a balance so the main lead does not come off unlikeable... But it drags on with two instances of heroic acts one event he himself stupidly creates and of course for the climax. Small meaningful heroics or maybe heroic acts gone wrong or some combination of both were needed since we already establish early on that Batman & Superman are a thing in this movie.
The 7 sins were a big missed opportunity since giving no individual character to them felt like a conscious decision, but I refuse to believe a writer would not jump at the opportunity to have their own spin on The Seven Great Evils. Especially even with a good and fun performance Strong's Character as the Main Villain was pretty bland and one note.

I want the sequel to get the hero action right this time around, we have a plethora of new heroes and the origin story out of the way. I am starving for more DC movies along this line but in the sequel we can hopefully see a better written story.

After rewatching this movie, I understood just what I was about to miss out on. I wasn't planning to watch "Shazam!" in theaters, but overwhelmingly positive reviews convinced me to give it a go. Initially, I thought it was decent.

After rewatch, I find this movie pretty great. It's charming, funny and well-acted for the most part. Every time Zachary Levi was onscreen, it was simply a delightful experience. The goofiness of this movie is partly what makes it a cut above all other mediocre DC outings which, in retrospect, just seem like depressing soap operas.

Humor was more entertaining than the times it fell flat. (Santa)

The beginning was a solid 8. Could have been a 9 if it handled some of its good ideas better. (Bus scene was a great idea, but handled poorly)

Then the action sequences took a child cartoon approach. (for obvious reasons) Which drastically hurt the last bit of the movie for me. (Ironically, most people enjoyed the ending, and hated the start. But then again, most super hero fans tend to like action, and I tend to find it boring, if nothing interesting is happening.)

The ending could have been a massive success, if they copied ONE thing from the marvel movies. (Sadly I can't say what it is, otherwise knowing it doesnt contain this, is a sort of spoiler.) But like the rest of the movie, the ending has a GREAT idea, and handled it poorly. (probably to save on money.)

RATING: 70% Above average, and mostly enjoyable.
Semi comparable to Thor3, humor wasnt as spot on as Thor3, but the actual plot was more interesting than Thor3.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was a good movie. Considering how DCEU has been the expectations for this film were low for me and considering how the character is too. But I was really surprised. THe comedy was amazing, like thor ragnorok. Although one main criticism is that there was no story, it was bland. The fact that the villains as chasing him as revenge did not make much sense, plus the villains as just forgettable it was a bit bland tbh. But other than that it was a well-made film with good jokes and more surprisingly better plot would have made it an amazing film. Expand

After participating in an act of selfless kindness, teenager Billy Bates (Asher Angel), is whisked away to another place. In this strange place, he meets a man claiming to be a high priest, who guards very special powers that can defeat all the evil in the world, powers he must relinquish. To receive these powers, all Billy has to do is say the mans name, Shazam, and just like that, Billy is a superhero. As expected, the young cast members Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Glazer had terrific chemistry and were the source of the majority of the funny moments that took place. Zachary Levi is also very good, but as DC tends to do, they gave away this entire film in the previews. Everything that looked funny, interesting, or unique about Shazam, is right in the preview. As for the rest of the film, the story is okay at best, with plenty of parts that were completely unnecessary, leading to a film that was over two hours long. Shazam was in fact about forty-five minutes longer than it needed to be, and not only was that obvious, but the filmmakers seem to know this as well, filling in a lot of scenes with boring **** that took a lot away from something with real potential. The film goes around in circle for a while, before we get to the ending and as is common for DC, the ending is a disaster. I would have to spoil too much of the film to explain to you exactly why that is, but if I'm to be honest, the ending really killed the whole film for me. I enjoyed the humor, I liked the fact that were some elements not often seen in the superhero genre, and I liked the interactions between young cast members. What I didn't appreciate was how the plot is constantly re-capped for us and I hated seeing similar scenes multiple times, especially when they don't move the story forward. I would say I'd recommend this film more towards children than adults, but the truth is, the kids in the theater with me were all restless around the ninety minute mark. The bottom line, Shazam! isn't a stinker and it drew enough interest in theaters to probably get a sequel, but in my opinion once again DC dropped the ball on a great idea and spoiled the whole thing in the trailer. It'sA foster kid is seen as worthy by a wizard that grants him superpowers in which he can instantly turn into a superhero every time he yells the word "Shazam." He then finds himself going up against a supervillain that wants his powers. It's pretty much a cross between 'Superman' and 'Big' and has some fun moments and ideas. However, the movie just got way too corny and ridiculous for my liking and it was a little longer than I would've liked it to be. I was ready for it to be over about three quarters of the way through. And of course they try to set things up for a sequel in a post-credit scene which didn't interest me much at all. Overall, while it's childish at heart (which I know is the whole point), not only did it start to become predictable and borrow numerous other tropes from past superhero movies, it just wasn't really for me, and I just felt that it got a little too carried away with its silliness and fun. The short review: A funny superhero origin story that gradually loses its shine due to lack of seriousness and later becomes something akin to a Power Rangers film. The kids would love it!

Related media: I have not read the comics on this hero nor watched cartoons based on this character.

What's it like?: This film has elements of past films where teenagers are suddenly given powers (for example Spider-man's story), Big (1988) and films on Power Rangers.

Mid- or post-credit scenes: There's one in the middle and one at the end (that has a great punchline).

Positives: 1) The film is funny in many places, though this becomes less frequent over time.

2) The caring nature of the foster home's parents is an inspiration to all. If only all foster homes are like that!

Negatives: 1) The film lacks sharpness. There are many instances where Shazam! could have been killed off, but wasn't, simply because this is a children film. Relatedly, the villain is not clinical enough and seems to do the cliche over-confident villain thing of taking his sweet time to kill off our hero. Boohoo!

2) The 'S' in Shazam! is referring to the wisdom of Solomon. Despite being given the powers of Shazam!, this hero did not get all that wise! He remained a dumb kid, doing dumb things in dumb ways. Sure, there were instances where he had showed wisdom, but they were not beyond the level of an adult nor at the level of a superhero. 3) The film's running time could have been compressed by some 30 minutes. A few tropes are repeatedly shown and everything just moves somewhat slowly, as if the film is meant for kids.

4)Shazam! foster brother, Freddy, is a rather irritating character.

5) Late on, the story degenerates into a Power Rangers trope, which is both interesting and disappointing. If the film had been more clinical, then this would not have been necessary.

How would the different age groups rate it?

Children: Excellent

Teens: Good

Young adults: Good Medium age adults: Average

Old adults: Average Rating: 3/5 (no half scores). Skip it. Save your money and watch it on TV.

Probably people who are just knowing them now will find them more attractive but the formula remains the same and is really, really stucked.

I couldn't help feeling an enormous reminiscence in this film from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Even the ending credits sequence with a song from The Ramones.

Shazam doesn't offer any surprises. It's basically Big with superheroes. Even the film recognizes it in a small scene.
This film definitely makes it clear that Warner is pointing more towards the Marvel style which is neither good nor bad but neither better.
It's entertaining within the basics. It adds a new, more humorous character to DC's film universe but the film itself has no memorable elements at all.

I don't know why SHAZAM! is getting such high praise. To the point it's getting higher aggregated user scores than Wonder Woman?!

The scripting is kind of bad. There's no agency for Billy, he's an angry kid that was given powers and suddenly turned good for no reason. Not enough time was actually spent on his time with the family to actually have turned him over a new leaf.

He went from lone wolf irresponsible kid with super powers to I love this family so much and I have to save the world in no time flat, because.... REASONS!

The only redeeming parts are some of the funny moments in the show. It had a lot of potential that was never fulfilled.

It's at most a 6/10 movie. Do yourself a favour and use the money to rent Into the Spider-verse, even if you have already watched it.

Recite The Passage.

Shazam!

Sandberg has a huge Christmas-calibered gift coming up at the front of his door. DC striking off its streak of fumbles, may still not yet be at its best self, but is fun enough to heat some more popcorns in the box office. This surprise Summer package takes itself seriously in order to not be taken itself seriously. And this Deadpool version of DC will and does get a wider range for its polished PG-13 lexicon and people pleasing concept that basically hovers around the pop culture references i.e. from earning through social media to heating vein popping debate about comic books.

While on the other hand the themes like foster homes and parenting and responsibilities are carried out, the director, David F. Sandberg who is sticking his neck out in here on weaving a tale of a genre that he has never been part of, is the most delightful package among all the powers the film has got. Probably, because no matter how sketchy things go in the storytelling, Sandberg keeps the film to the ground. He doesn't milk out laughs or emotional scenes with an extra effort, it just comes easy to him.

Another major notable work is how he grasps an authentic reaction before jumping in on to other scene, like when Mark Strong- the baddie- ambushes his father's business meeting and creates a havoc in the room, the energy of that room is set practically which makers often forget to do so in a film where activities like flying is normalized to running. If the first act is introductory and the second just mocks around here and there, the third and the biggest act of all is the best. With a long action sequence, that isn't just a feat of CGI colors but is also a part of gripping narrative.

From characters confronting their past to revelations of each other's powers and weakness and from teaming up against the baddie to a well orchestrated battle, this more than half hour of climax amplifies the film to its peak. Zachary Levi as the sort of dream version in a red sparkly skin tight suit is just as bling as his costume is, of course, in a good way. His shaking comic body language and stuttering before uttering one-liners is just as magnanimous as his inflated arm muscles.

On the other side of the door lies Mark Strong as brooding and growling for his character that gets an equal and powerful arc to walk on or fly, feel free. But these actors that relies upon CGI to pack a punch and are- let's be frank- on most of the posters would never be able to create the jarring impact if not for their brilliant younger supporting cast. Each of the family members are whispering their drama lightly and arguing loudly to draw in the laughs, this diverse family is something we can all connect to. Shazam! is actually the magic word that makes DC and their fans sore, look up high, the expectation has grown.

I can see what they were going for but it didn't land for me. Lots of jokes didn't hit, its a bit too goofy and has a throwaway villain ala Marvel.

As the critics have mentioned it is funny and sweet (and there is more action than the trailers suggest). That being said, despite my best intentions, I just wasn't fully sold on the film. Perhaps had I been a bit younger the jokes would have landed more often (although one of the gags truly had me in stitches), but regardless the last 30 minutes let me down to the extent that I adjusted my mid-movie rating from an 8 to a 6. In the context of the rest of the genre this movie is above average, but not by as much as I think fans wanted it to be. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wasn't expecting from a DC movie. We all know they're very often a total disaster. But after watching Shazam I'm really shook, this movie wasn't that bad. In my opinion the thing that made this movie pleasure to watch were the jokes and funny situations. Everything thanks to our main protagonist who is really fantastic, and we can clearly see that the actor is having lots of fun while playing this role. The plot itself is interesting, I was enjoying the overall history. I think we can devide this movie into 3 parts. Before he gets his powers, when he already has them and fighting with villain. You can guess the second part was the best, really enjoyable, funny and interesting. For me the first part was really boring and i was sitting here thinking "when the movie will start already?". But suprisingly the last part was weak too. Shazam and villain were like dog and cat, they were just looking and screaming at each other without interesting moments, fights or stuff like that. The villain is the one from "because i wanted to" group which is really disappointing and he is really uninteresting. At the end I wanted to add that the sins look horrible, the cgi is gross and I couldn't stand looking at them.
But to sum up I have to say that despite all the little things that were really weird and uniteresting i enjoyed it and had fun :)

The constant jokes might be enough for you, and that's a good thing. Because for me, they weren't funny or clever enough to distract me from how bland this movie actually is.

How is that The grown-up Billy (Levi) is more funny and childish than the little Billy?
Great sound and graphic FX. But that's pretty much it.

Something of a let down. Don't even get me started with the weird glowing lightning bolt on his costume. This should have been a better movie. Good, but not really good. Expected something more impressive.

What makes it work so well is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Zachary Levi is hilarious in the titular role and helps keep the tone of the film consistently upbeat and exciting. All of the child actors were much better than I’m used to seeing and the two lead boys provided plenty of great comedy together. While a little too long and maybe not quite clever enough, it is all very charming and fun throughout. It’s been awesome to see David F. Sandberg’s career grow so quickly and have him direct something this big so I’m very excited to see what he puts out next.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Easily one of the better DCEU films, but DC still needs to find a cohesive voice when telling a film and has a long way to go. My friend and I both agreed that at times, it was like watching two different films. The film opens with kid Sivana in the back seat of the car driving through the snow, car crashes and we meet the old Wizard. Sivana fails the wizards test and BOOM, that's the villains origin story. He wanted to be a wizard but he couldn't ... as far as origin stories and villains go, Sivana had no nuance, no appeal he was just angry-bad-man-4072. He sucked. The scenes he dominated were dark and serious and his character was really flat, he was so obviously just there to be a villain, it would have done his character justice to show some empathy or give him some redeeming quality or a goal (literally ANY goal, once he got those forgettable-shadow-demon things that were based on the 7-deadly sins, he had no endgame. He was just as bland and forgettable as the 7 CGI monsters that were supposed to look unique but all looked exactly the same). HOWEVER, the one redeeming quality of this movie was its heroes. Billy and Freddy were absolutely spectacular characters. The tone of the film does a total 180 when we get to Billy and Freddy, the colour tone shifts and the mood elevates, this is what I mean when I say it was like watching two different movies. Billy and Freddy had the better story, Sivana was uncooked and uninspired. Billy has a chip on his shoulder and he isn't the nicest character when we first get to know him, but he's genuine and he has motivations we can sympathise with, he feels real. The more we see of him, the more his rough exterior makes sense and when he bonds with Freddy a beautiful relationship between these two brothers is born. They out the best and worst in eachother as Billy embraces the perks of being a superhero and starts to leave Freddy behind. He finally realises being a superhero isn't much fun when you can't share it with your best friend and brother, it is BILLY, rather than his superhero persona SHAZAM that is the main appeal of this film. The superhero elements were so-so, largely due to the underwhelming final fight scene and the snore-inducing villain. All in all, it's a good film with some pretty funny beats, a fantastic film about brotherly love and male-friendships but DC still don't know how to tell an entirely cohesive story and undercooks the main villain to the point where he's just served raw and my immediate thoughts were "What's the point in Sivana anyway?" Go for an unusual coming of age story, but not if you want to see a good battle of hero v villain. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In the beginning I thought that "SHAZAM!" could be a really good movie, because there weren't a lot which bothered me, apart from the presentation of the main villain and the seven deadly sins. But that changed as soon as they made more jokes and the story began to roll. Some jokes really did well, but most of them weren't funny in my opinion. Even Billy Batson did annoy me at some point on account of his nearly hilarious greenness and the licensed music also didn’t right fit in there. I wouldn't have needed the Shazam-family, but they turned out pretty okay.
In the end "SHAZAM!" wasn't that good, but not nearly as bad as I thought before.
