Surprisingly fun and engaging. Zachary Levi and Mark Strong put in near perfect performances and the entire cast has great chemistry. Kudos to the writers for creating an engaging backstory for both the hero and villain!

The acting by Zach Levi was on point, and the more serious topics addressed were handled in a realistic and thoughtful manner. The characters ultimately change from cynical and selfish to the hero you were hoping for in a way that didn't feel overly optimistic, and how I would expect a 14 year old with a traumatic past to handle a situation like this. If this is the direction that the DCEU is going in, I might just have to consider myself a fan! This movie had a great story, great characters, solid jokes, a good script, and a lot of heart! It reminded me a lot of Spider-Man Homecoming. It’s a much smaller-scale superhero story, focussing on a small cast of characters and not existing solely to set up sequels. *cough*Batman v Superman*cough* I really like how authentic this movie felt. It takes place in a universe where superheroes exist, but they aren’t going around flying everywhere. The connections to the other movies are loose. That’s probably what a universe full of superheroes would really be like. They would be rare. You wouldn’t see them every day. The Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn’t really feel that way to me. It’s missing that human element of what it’s like to live in a universe full of heroes and gods just as a regular average citizen. Maybe that’s why I don’t really like the MCU that much. Maybe that’s why Ioved Spider-Man Homecoming so much. I like stories about regular people living in larger-than-life universes. Anyway, back to Shazam, this is a must-see for any fan of superheroes and family comedies! Maybe don’t take the little ones though. I was kinda surprised, this movie looks really kid-friendly, it has a main cast of mostly child actors who do a really good job, but it actually has some really scary parts! There were kids crying in my theatre. Just a heads-up. All that aside, I loved this movie, it’s a ton of fun. Highly recommended! Now the only movie from the DCEU I haven’t seen is Man of Steel. (I finally watched Wonder Woman. It’s good.) Should I go watch it or should I let my positive feelings for the DCEU stay a little longer? Hmm... Expand

SHAZAM! is one of those movie I can turn to whenever I have nothing to watch. It is so entertaining, and just so fun! Zachary Levi is easily one of the most fun and likeable heroes as he plays The Red Cyclone, Captain Sparkle fingers, or whatever his name is. Jack Dylan Grazer steals the show though. Jack Dylan Grazer plays Freddie Freeman, a superhero loving fanboy who wishes he could be one. All of his lines are super funny and he's just great. The reason he's so great is because, we have probably been like Freddie at one point. We wish we could have the powers of Superman, or the gadgets of Batman. Also, unlike a lot of Superhero movies that try to be, SHAZAM! is really funny. Mostly all the jokes land and makes just for a fun time for everyone. The only complaints are some nitpicks, some minor plot holes, and why is Billy so different as a teen, and his superhero self? This movie though is just one of the most likeable, and watchable movies ever!(for me) Expand

To avoid confusion (and a lot of potential legal issues) this version of Captain Marvel instead goes by the heroes other name ‘Shazam!’ in the funniest and most wholesome film DC has released to date.

It stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, a young boy who was orphaned at a young age after losing his mother at a carnival. Shortly after arriving at a new foster home, he is summoned by an ancient wizard in to another dimension. This wizard tells Billy that he is pure of heart and passes all his power in to him so that everytime he says Shazam he turns into a superpowered version of Zachary Levi. It’s basically the superpowered version of Big.

Just like some earlier kids adventure films like Stand By Me and Monster Squad, the writers of Shazam understand how to write children and after gaining these powers he reacts in any way you’d expect a 14 year old boy to react. He’s less interested in being a superhero and more interested in having fun, showing off to crowds and becoming a YouTube celebrity. These reactions are perfected by Levi, who is the ideal man-child for the role. All his reactions seem so genuine and his joy from discovering all his new powers is very contagious.

Another great stand out is Jack Grazzer as Billy’s friend from his new foster home, a superhero geek who ends up more or less using Shazam as his own personal plaything. Billy’s entire foster family is also extremely entertaining, ranging from his hilarious foster sister to his surprisingly sweet foster parents. Not all the family members get a lot of screen time, but they all leave a memorable impression and a strong desire to see more from them in any future sequels. Even Mark Strong as the films ridiculously over the top villain was great and at times even a little intimidating. His character has been obsessed with obtaining the power of Shazam ever since the wizard denied him the powers when he was a child, so he releases the seven deadly sins to take these powers by force. These sins are represented as horrifying monsters that often act less like supervillains and more like they were ripped from a horror movie. With a lower budget compared to most tentpole superhero movies, the fight scenes don’t have the same scale that something like Aquaman has. But this is largely to the films advantage, with the fight scenes they do have being a lot more focused and avoid the CGI mess that comes from something like Transformers.

But just like Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse before it, Shazam! always keeps its characters at its core with a lot of sincerity and even a lot of surprisingly emotional moments. The whole film is certainly a nice change of pace for DC, who have become increasingly diverse in their recent film set and sets the ideal whimsical tone for one of their goofiest superhero origins.

It wildly succeeds in what it sets out to do because it understands that there is nothing childish about childhood or children's entertainment. Irregardless of the invulnerability of its title character or the power fantasy inherent in the superhero genre, the film embraces a disarming vulnerability and emotional intelligence. The movie never forgets that while childhood is full of wonder, humor and escapism, it is also full of fear, loneliness, and struggle. Where other recent comic book movies are built behind a smug aura of "cool face," cheap sentimentality, or winking humor, Shazam! earns its attitude and big laughs by leaning in to the humanity, complex emotions, and social longing inherent in comic book mythology. The film is decidedly on a smaller scale that what we've come to expect in the genre, both in times of budget, star power, and 'end of the world' dramatics, but rather than diminishing the impact of the film, it heightens the very real and emotionally powerful stakes of family and friendship. Yeah I was way more entertained by this movie than I had any business being. DC is actually standing on its own legs for the first time since they started chasing Marvel.

It delivers as a comedy, and for once it actually feels like somebody stopped and tried to make something unique out of the subject matter. Also, I would like to congratulate DC on their first interesting villain since Zod. I normally understand that everybody has their tastes, but I'm genuinely puzzled to see that some people were disappointed with this movie. Indifferent, maybe... but to actually dislike it is weird to me.

The bus scene was a bit much though.

Me a few years ago: "Hey DC, are you trying to f**k this up on purpose? Seriously! What the hell is going on over there."

DC: OK Matt

Me after Shazam: Well, that's more like it.

I've been harsh at DC for awhile now, but for good reasons. I don't want them to fail, it's just that they keep missing the point. However they are listening and improving. If this is the direction DC is taking, then I think it will exciting and ambitious, if done properly.

'Shazam!' is the true hero DC needs right now, right behind 'Wonder Women' for this rocky cinematic universe. It’s fun, light-hearted, funny and embraces the corniness. Although don’t let that trick you into thinking it doesn’t have any serious moments, because when it gets dark, it’s absolutely terrifying and no surprise the director’s previous work are horror movies. Throughout the movie, I would occasionally have flashbacks to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy.

Not to say it’s a great or perfect movie, as it’s got problems. The visual effects looked pretty good (for the most part), however the other times it either looks out of place or unfinished, like needed more time to polish up. It takes a while for things to get moving in the first act, and not to say it’s dull, just padding along. And that’s really it for issues.

Zachary Levi is an absolute joy to watch as Shazam and the older version of Billy. Levi oozes with charisma and a clear indication from his introduction he was born to play this role. I can’t imagine any other actor in the role than him. There was never a scene where I didn’t buy him as a kid in a man’s body. Asher Angel as Billy Batson also did a great job, especially during the more dramatic scenes, which I thought he performed beautifully. Levi had the comedic elements, while Asher had the emotional elements.

Jack Dylan Grazer is great once again and a promising young star. He can express some much emotion through his face and eyes, despite looking like he’s up to something. The chemistry between him and Levi (and Asher) are dynamic.

Mark Strong plays the main villain Dr. Sivana, which Strong best describes him as “an evil son of a b**ch”. While not the best or the most compelling villain of all time, but at least his motivations are clear and you understand what he’s been through. Heck, the film starts with a young Sivana experiencing a traumatic event that shaped him to be what he is. I can tell Mark Strong was having a blast and he was menacing enough to be a threat.

The other child actors were also pretty good, although some of them took a while to fully grow on me. Once they did, it was good and dandy. Also the foster parents are the sweetest people in the world.

Another thing to mention is how genuinely well written it is. The humor and the punchline to every joke was surprisingly funny, which I didn’t expect judging by how cringe the trailers falsely advert it. I find it compelling that we see Billy learning how to use his given powers step by step, even the end climax he’s still learning. David Sandberg manages to juggle some many themes and tones, but impressively never came off as “too much” or a train wreck that any new director with a background in small budget movies would struggle at.

Still, I can’t believe a movie like “Shazam!” exist in the same universe as the bleak ‘Batman V Superman’ and the third worst thing to happen to America “Suicide Squad”. Even a familiar f̶a̶c̶e̶ shows up at the end.

Overall rating: Just say the name

The story centers around a young, 14 year old boy named Billy Batson (Asher Angel) who is alone, and is searching for his mother ever since they were separated when he was just a young boy. He is then forced to bond with a new foster family after having a reputation for running away numerous times, but decides to finally settle in. His new family is big, many different siblings of various ages and personalities, the one he gets closest to is Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer), who is a big fan of superheroes and collects all kinds of special merchandise, even right down to the bullet that Superman himself deflected. Billy struggles at first with his new family and school, but is still motivated to find his mother. We also meet Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong), who, when he was a child, he encountered the wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou) and was cast out as he could not resist evil, and was deemed not worthy to possess such great power. He manages to get himself back in and snatch the evil power, and the wizard must find someone truly worthy enough to defeat Sivana. That is where things get interesting for our young Billy, as he also comes across the mysterious temple and is told what he must do, when he says "Shazam!", he turns into a fully grown-up superhero (now played by Zachary Levi), but still has the mind of his own, young self. What really surprised me about this movie was how charming, heartwarming and funny it all is. Directed by David F. Sandberg ('Lights Out' and 'Annabelle: Creation'), the movie's tone is surprisingly light and much different than what he maybe used to. Despite maybe one or two moments when we constantly cut back and forth between Billy and Sivana, it can feel like two different movies, making it tonally uneven, but that's just a small percentage. The movie mainly works because of its youthful spirit. Teenagers always wanted to be a hero, and how Levi plays a 14 year old trapped in a 30 year old's body and his reaction to everything from super strength, to flying, really adds to the movie's joyful quality. The third act also, can get a little too cheesy at times, but maybe that's intentional, overall, this is pretty much 'Big' (1988) meets 'Superman' (1978), also, it does remind me of 'Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse' (2018) and that's a high compliment. It knows the concept is a little silly, it embraces its light spirit, and it has fun with the material, like how most kids have fun when they use some powerful piece of technology. Imagine if you were a kid, and you found out you could fly and have super strength. This movie is a joy to behold. Expand

I haven'tAlright lads we are well overdue a good DC film, it's been too long, maybe some of you out there actually liked Batman v Superman or Justice League and all I can say to that is I don't understand it but whatever floats your boat. I haven't forgotten Wonder Woman, it had a lot going for it but I can't say it's a great film, it should have been but we can only hope that Wonder Woman 1984 will up the standard. Shazam on the other hand is a great, hilarious and heartfelt film that I never expected to be quite as good as it was. Who would have suspected a comedy would have brought DC out of its rut. No seriously, comedy isn't exactly DC's forte I mean the last time they tried too hard to be funny we got Suicide Squad and I think I speak for almost everyone here when I say we all wish we could erase that one from our memory. Well done DC for gifting us with a lighthearted superhero film that delivers on the action and the comedy.

Fourteen year old Billy Batson (Asher Angel) becomes every kids dream when he suddenly acquires a vast range of superpowers by simply shouting the word SHAZAM, turning him into an adult superhero (Zachary Levi). Shazam is having a great time testing the limits of his new-found abilities with the help of his friend Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) but quickly realises he'll need to figure out his true potential if he has any hope of fighting his arch nemesis Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong). Pure fun, incredibly entertaining and very funny with more than a few laugh out loud moments. You can see the entire cast having a great time with this film, Levi's infectious and charismatic performance shines through and you can't help but enjoy yourself. Mark Strong may be typecast as a villain at this point and why shouldn't he be? He always plays a villain role to perfection. The chemistry is simply electric, DC normally chooses wisely with its casting and the same can be said for Shazam. It's a film suitable for all ages, you can just sit back and enjoy. Although a little on the long side, and would probably benefit from losing about ten minutes. If you need a Superhero fix before Endgame then Shazam should be your choice, highly recommended.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Think a mash-up of "Superman," "Big" and "Jumanji"... Yes, spoilers ahead if you keep reading. I very much enjoyed this film. Zach Levi (from "Chuck") was born to play this role. My only criticism of his performance is that the younger (non-Shazam) version of himself is cynical, shrewd, and not all that funny - he's been through a lot having been abandoned by his mother, so it makes sense. When he's in the BIG role, he's much more, for lack of a better word, "goofy." The consistency is not there, but this didn't kill it for me. Much more importantly, the casting director found Jack Dylan Grazer to play Freddy Freeman. Believe it or not, he's the beating heart of this film. Brilliant work- extremely funny but not in the typical "sassy teen" way. If you can't feel for him, everything else falls apart. I also absolutely loved Cooper Andrews (Jerry from The Walking Dead) and Marta Milans as the foster parents. They're more tangibly "real" than any other parents in these superhero flicks. Believe it or not, Mark Strong is only OK in this film. Sure, he's the bad guy, and they give him a really good back story which I won't spoil, but he doesn't bring a unique spin to the all-powerful menacing force. I also liked exacxtly how they acknowledge the other existing DC superheroes in this world - Batman, Superman, etc. are a "thing", but they handle it in a very organic way - if you're a fan of thse things, you'll smile. BIGGER spoiler (without giving too much up).... When the entire family goes through their "thing" toward the end, the casting director did a phenomenal job - all those new parts are all perfectly cast. Love all those actors - particularly Michelle Borth (Hawaii 5-0) and Meagan Good. Triumphant ending. Recommended for sure. Expand

The villain is really poor, the bad bad guy. The film doesn't have a very complex plot, the guy is thirsty for power and wants the ones that the protagonist has and uses the 7 deadly sins (which are mythological monsters) to try to get them. It touches very important issues about the true meaning of family and heroism. It reminds us of The Goonies, Stand By Me, The Greatest American Hero and Big. Wonder Woman is better but this one is better than Aquaman. Same light and cool tone since Justice League and this is the perfect path that DC found to compete against Marvel. The movie is very long, in the middle it becomes heavy and slow, 1 hour and 45 minutes would have been better. Expand

Shazam delivers a really funny and at times action-packed movie although a few parts could be improved upon.

Zachary Levi is great as as Shazam, the superhero adult form of 14-yer old Billy Batson (played by Asher Angel). He really makes the movie, both bringing on the humor and managing to portray a young teenager. Jack Dylan Grazer, playing Billy's wiseguy foster brother Freddy Freeman, works so well off him. Heck, the entire foster family is played well. Each of the children is well acted with distinct, likable personalities. However, I was a little surprised that Mary (played by Grace Fulton), who along with Freddy is one of the biggest and longest-running characters of the Shazam (once known as Captain Marvel before legal issues) roster wasn't given more to do.

The movie is really funny, maybe not quite on the same pedestal as Daredevil, but not that far off either. I was worried that this movie was trying to be a superhero comedy but was shot in a down-to-Earth manner that does not try to make Philadelphia try to feel like a movie city at all. (The school Billy goes to looks like a real outdated school that was built back in the 70s/80s.) However, the humor and action blends in surprisingly well with the setting.

Shazam fans will be pleased to see several Easter Eggs to the 40's golden age that you wouldn't expect them to be able to pull off. Be SURE to stay through the mid-credits. There is also an after credits scene, but it isn't as essential. It's just a funny throwaway bit like the endings to Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel, although this one is funnier.

As much as I liked this film, there were moments that could have been improved upon. The second act does run a bit long. Too much time is spent on Freddy and Billy having shenanigans with Shazam's powers. The time could've been spent developing the villain and some of the foster kids more; the former in particular. This is not to say that Mark Strong's Dr. Thaddeus Sivana was a bad villain. He isn't paper thin like Thor: The Dark World's Malekith. The antagonist's motivations are set up well, and Strong does a good job, being particularly threatening in the final confrontation. However, the character still could've been fleshed out a little more and have more personality. (We never even learn what he is a doctor of).

There are a couple of bullies at BIlly's school that are way too broadly written. There are some creature effects , while designed well, suffer from being another Hollywood creation that is drably colored grey.

The movie tries to be too many things and two elements really took me out of it. Billy has a serious subplot, his quest for his mother, and although I applaud the writers for giving the character an emotional backstory and trying to be more than just a comedy, it always felt like I was watching a different film.

The other element was a couple of scary deaths that never jive with the feel of the rest of the film, especially considering its supposed to be a family picture. Director Larry F. Sandberg stated that he was trying to capture the scary moments from the films he saw as a kid, but I felt he crossed the fine line between fun scary and sadistic. Listen, I'm not saying all family films should be sugar-coated and children's ability to handle things underestimated. In fact there are some darker moments in the final confrontation with Sivana, including one scene where Billy is in real trouble, that are effective. A lot of us have scary parts they remember fondly as kids (like the Large Marge scene in the Pee-Wee movie, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, or Return to Oz). But a lot of those kept the scares quick and to the point. Too much time is spent lingering on the victims being in pain and fear. It feels like torture. (Parents may worry more about their children becoming desensitized than being scared.) It contrasts too much with the joke elements. It's a lot like that creepy scene in Superman 3 where the woman is slowly transformed into a robot. I never hear of anyone who as a kid who wasn't just scared-scared and not fondly scared of that scene. The reason I'm guessing is because it was so atonal compared to the rest of the film, drawn out, arbitrary, awkward, uncomfortable, and came out of the blue that it never quite landed with children. Same with the deaths here.

The out-of-film moments are in the first two acts. Everything is ironed out by the third. It is so good and surprising that it may be one of my favorite superhero movie finales.

I recommend this. I'll definitely own it. When this movie is great, it's great. Just expect some dips here and there.

Must not be Marvel, and in fact it isn't. The film gets most of its funny vibe from the realization by the teen protagonist that his alter ego is a grown man and can therefore do things that would normally be precluded to minors, and in fact the first part is the one I enjoyed the most. There are so many scenes that had me laugh like crazy that I can only think the actor playing the adult Shazam (real superhero name: Captain Marvel, look it up if you don't believe me) must have had the time of his life with this role.
I didn't equally enjoy the second part, where we get to see the hero confront his nemesis, mostly because it's just a continuous, very long fighting scene. I think that creating a more nuanced story, splitting the action into multiple occurrences, would have helped immensely. Still, one great, lighthearted superhero movie that delivers.

The villain is ok (the powers and who gave it, to me, it seemed interesting), the CGI is ok (the flying scenes could have been better). The humor is also pretty good. I had a blast watching this movie! Stay up to the first end-credit scene, it will be worth it.

Zachary Levi had me entertained with his sheer presence alone.

As always, let’s get the negatives out of the way. The visual effects were mediocre in the beginning and progressively got worse until the end. Only 1 of the child actors didn’t do a good job. 50% of the jokes either had no impact or were not funny to me. The first half of the film’s tone was really inconsistent. Other than that, this movie is amazing. Zachary Levi did an amazing job as Shazam and was the best part of the film. All the other actors did a great job and the villain was interesting and unique. We do get to see the villain’s backstory as the first part of the film which is different and unique for a Superhero film. The cinematography was good and the 2nd half of the film’s tone remained consistent. The plot was really solid and the other 50% of the jokes got a smile or a laugh out of me. The film does use some pop culture songs effectively, unlike Suicide Squad and they fit well into the narrative. I highly recommend seeing this film. Overall, Shazam! I like that they flesh him out a bit.

One of the things I like is that this movie can get really dark at times. There is one scene that genuinely shocked me with how dark it was. I wouldn’t say don’t take your kids to see Shazam but expect some pretty hardcore moments. Also, there are a few jokes that are obviously meant only for adults, but kids my age would know what they mean.

One complaint I have about the film is how different Billy acts when he is Shazam. One moment he’s sort of a mean dude and the next he’s cracking jokes and flossing! That’s why Shazam himself is one of the weaker parts of the film.

As for the jokes? There amazing! Almost every single one landed and there are so many more I missed that I’ll have to rewatch to to catch. There are a lot of jokes but the movie never gets overly jokey.

So, how does Shazam compare to the rest to DCEU? He can fit in a team up movie and in the universe as a whole and so far is my favorite character of them all!

Verdict:
Shazam! Is a funny blast! It is my favorite DCEU film and so far my favorite 2019 movie! I highly recommend it.

If this was the potential of DCEU, why on earth movies like Justice League, BvS and Suicide Squad even exist? The more I watch films like this, the more I think Snyder was the biggest mistake of DCEU. .
.
Good : Zachary Levi is awesome as the adult version of Billy Batson. He can perfectly play an adult who is actually a teenager. His performance is incredible. He has an amazing chemistry with all the other characters which made the experience really good. The movie is an ultimate fun ride from the top to bottom. There's not a single part which felt boring or uninteresting. The arc given to Billy was quite good and we start to like the characters. The comedic parts deliver at its finest. Director Sandberg has shown versatility in a very good way. I have always thought of him as a very good director. His horror films like Lights Out and Annabelle Creation are directed quite well, the major flaws are in the script, if any. Here, there are no such problems with the script, and he understands very well how a certain part of the story is to be directed. Some parts do have a nice horror movie vibe to it, but it is not tonally inconsistent. It knows what it tries to be, and doesn't take itself too seriously. Even at the times it does, it is for a comedic purpose. It never tries to be an epic film knowing that it's not, unlike BvS. It is sure to put a smile on your face throughout and make you laugh a lot. The final moments are crowd pleasing moments done right. .
.
Mixed : It's not a big problem, but I expected more comedy out of this. What I got was great, but I wanted a lot more of funny stuff. The kid playing teen Billy Batson isn't a bad actor. But some of the times, it felt like him and Levi were a little different with each other. It could've been a little better. .
.
Bad : The villain was a clichéd villain. He wasn't interesting as a character like Thanos, Ledger's Joker or Bane. Mark Strong does a good job, but this is a poorly written villain. .
.
Conclusion : An entertaining superhero film which knows what it is, and is quite campy in a good way. It is not wildly original concept of a film. It has some popular tropes of the genre and has a familiar template for an origin story. But it will definitely keep you entertained till the end, and you will end up liking most of the characters. The best thing is, even if you have never seen a DCEU movie, it won't make a difference. It has little to no reference to the previous DCEU films and is its own thing for the most part. Recommended even to those who are not the fan of the genre. .

Unlike other movies, here we have a character development that succeeds to overcome his problems, and not just handling his new superpowers but also his family problems as well. The jokes told during the movie were kind dumb but hey, we are watching a 15 year old boy inside a adult body making what any 15 year old would do if he finds up with newly adquired super powers.

About the soundtrack. They used the nostalgia formula yet again. The big difference here is that they don't overuse it. Overall, good soundtrack.

About the CGI. Generally speaking, CGI effects were good but at some scenes of the movie you can tell that they use CGI.

At the end of the movie. Good final battle but I think they overdued to show the full potencial of character. Overall, a good movie.

Not because it means it's actually good or great or a masterpiece, but because it's so silly, cheesy and funny that it makes the movie so fun to watch. This is one of the most fun experiences I've had watching a movie this year, because this movie doesn't take itself too seriously and that's fine, you can't make a movie about a kid that transforms into a guy in red spandex when he yells a word actually serious or dark, it's meant to be silly and that's what this movie is, filled with tons of self-aware humor that makes fun of superhero clichés, over-the-top and cartoonish characters and performances (Like it looks that Zachary Levi had so much fun playing the character, you can tell) and it's a movie to spend a pretty good time overall, this isn't a superhero movie, it's a borderline comedy and I liked that. One very good example being Raimi's Spiderman trilogy, Peter Parker was relatable so were the people he cared for and later on in the movie when the stakes where high we felt the emotional depth of losing a loved one. In that regards Shazam is very similar where the stakes were high for the main characters of the movie and by this it was able to tell us a very personal, character centric story with family values at heart.

Shazam is a superhero movie where action was never the main priority of the movie , before the word "Shazam" are first spoken we are well versed with Billy Batson (Shazam alter ego), Freddy( Billy Foster brother) , the rest of foster family and the villain. It may be called a slow start by some but what it does is that later on in the movie when these character makes a huge decision or anyone of them is in peril you feel the emotional impact too as the viewer. The actors were very well casted especially the character of Freddy, Billy Batson and Shazam who are played by Jack Dylan Grazer, Asher Angel and Zachary Levi respectively. Jack stole the show in every scene he was in , Asher successfully bought depth where it was needed and Zachary played a 14 year old like a 14 year old and not some adult acting stupid and weird. The villain played by Mark Strong is also set up a little bit to provide contrast to the protagonist. There was nothing special about him other than providing the stage for protagonist to grow as a character which is okay for an origin movie.
The Movie was directed by David F. Sandberg who is a huge inspiration for young film-makers, he only had a Youtube channel few years ago and now he has directed 3 Hollywood movies. I liked his direction for the most part especially how he was able to tell a great story with developed characters and he also managed to inject some horror elements ( his usual genre style) which were great although I think the actions scene could have been better like in final battle slow motions were used unnecessarily . The final battle also seemed a tad bit longer than it had to be, although it was able to drive home the point of true meaning a family successfully which was the whole point anyway.
I think the cinematography was very basic and didn't worked for me and the soundtrack was nothing special too which were strong suit of previous DC movies.
Having said that Shazam delivered in most of the areas like characters, story and humor and never in its 2hr 12min run time it made me bored, although I wished the cinematography and soundtrack were a bit better. Ultimately I think this movie was not about saying "Shazam" but what it means to say the word "Shazam!".

Shazam is huge upgrade from previous DC movies, with its emotional story packed with amazing light-hearted humor and funny jokes. It’s very clear that David F. Sandberg knew what he was doing, when he directed a movie full of heart by giving his audience a tale about friends, family, and struggling to adapt in this world, leaving us much more sympathetic and caring with all the foster family members and especially Billy. The foster family aspect in the film is its heart and soul, all the touching scenes rely on that plot which actually is the strongest suit of the movie. We must say that this movie is super funny, it’s more of a comedy than we expected it to be, but still very balanced in tone and never forgets its main emotional core.
All the cast worked pretty well in the movie and especially Zachary Levi, he really embodied the “Shazam” character and totally acts as kid who’s had a tough life and since he’s gotten his powers he can now do something valuable with them. As for Jackdy Langrazer he delivers an excellent performance, he’s the hilarious one who highlights the comedy factor and his character never gets annoying in anyway. The chemistry between the 2 actors along with Asher Angel is what makes the humor really work, Asher Angel delivered a fair performance as Billy and so did Mark Strong as Dr. Sivana. But what I thought didn’t work prominently in the movie is its villain, too much was going on in the family story line which diverted the focus a bit, his story was very rushed and could’ve worked better if it got more screen time and development, and his main inspiration as bad guy in this movie didn’t really work for us. Plus, we never view him as a real threat to Billy and the story makes that clear in the beginning of the film.
If you’re a Comic book fan, this movie will definitely be a different experience for you, there’s a lot of easter eggs to look for and references to notice. Make sure to keep an eye out for its last scene because, well..it’s pretty damn awesome.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite my dizzyingly low expectations and complete ignorance about the headline hero, Shazam! is the first truly joyful DC film I’ve seen in a long time. (I hesitate to say “comic book film” because of the recent experiment with the multiverse by Marvel.) I was advised through a teenage friend of Friend that we would be bored by the first twenty minutes of the film and then it would pick up, and I found that not to be the case. There are a lot of clever bends in those opening scenes: fun with the soundtrack, Djimon Hounsou as a big ol’ wizard, and Mark Strong refusing to age a day past thirty and struggling to wrap his mouth around an American accent.

The turn was unexpected for someone who has not familiarized themselves with the comics (Friend confirmed this for me last night after the show, too), which I think means that the direction did not feel the need to treat the audience like it was stupid, yet it doesn’t feel unearned or disorienting like so many dei ex machina. Vague spoilers: the nature of the turn stays in line with my desire to see 1) the hero not overcome the villain because “he wants it more” and 2) the hero finding himself on unequal advantage over the antagonist. The film did a great job of maintaining symmetry and power equity, which kept stakes high (unlike in a film like Cpt. Marvel, where the fully realized power of the heroine removes the concern for her safety. There are decisions of comedy being made in the case of Cpt Marvel, but it still means that her fight sequences are not really about worrying that she’ll lose).

Shazam! did a wonderful job of avoiding cultural amnesia of super heroes and not bending over backwards to integrate its story into a shared universe with the pretty toxic missteps of Snyder’s Batman and Superman franchises or the more popular Aguahombre and Miramujer-centered movies. Because Shazam! is allowed to stand (or, perhaps more accurately, crouch in a cardboard box under a highway) on its own, it doesn’t have to contend with Easter eggs or momentum-killing side quests or underwhelming cameo send-ups. The film is manageable in its simplicity, fresh in its depiction of foster care, if not of youth culture more broadly (instead here it leans back on high school angst, impish liquor store hijinks, pervy **** bar tropes without bothering to get too insightful or specific.

The film’s use of Jack Dylan Grazer (of Stephen King’s It remake) to play the fast-talking and very charming sidekick/manager of Shazam is a mixed bag. Freeman is portrayed as having a physical disability that requires him to move around with the use of a crutch, and at times his character’s disability seems like it’s used as a hallpass to make jokes about his vulnerable he is as a “cripple”. Even with the eye rolls and tongue-in-cheek gags, it does feel a little stomach-churning to hear this nice kid put on a kind of minstrel show. That being said, the film does a fine job at other times of making his disability part of a more universal metaphor of invisibility and the sense of helplessness that many disadvantaged youth feel.

Shazam! is, as many reviews have pointed out, an excellent approximation of a Marvel movie, without much of the baggage that Marvel movies have 20 films in and counting. It’s got some laugh out loud moments an an excellent cast of characters, hopefully turning the page on a stale formula of grittiness from previous DC movies.

I would describe Shazam! as a light hearted fun experience and nothing that is meant to be taken all that seriously.

Shazam! the better Captain Marvel?

This week we have Shazam! DC Movies tries it’s hand again at another standalone feature hero film. And I bet you’re wondering how they will fare this time. Well luckily for you, I obliged by seeing this movie 2 weeks prior to its opening. DC definitely took a risk with David F. Sandberg, known for movies Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation, as the director for this movie. But it seems that DC is committed to him as there are rumors of a sequel. Based on the visuals of Shazam, this may be a good move. Also, for once the trailers didn’t give away the whole movie. Either way, here we go.

Shazam! lends itself to being DC’s version of a teen-friendly version of Marvel’s Deadpool, minus breaking the 4th wall. DC has worked on providing viewers with a second version of what Marvel already created in their universe by giving a separate genre within the superhero movie category, a family teen comedy superhero origin story. This film is starkly different from every other DC superhero movie that has come out recently. Will this movie be heralded like Wonder Woman?… NO. But they are targeting completely different audiences. Is this movie as good as Wonder Woman?… Yes, as the end result is as pleasing.

Let’s start by saying this is a typical origin film for a superhero. You will take a ride with Billy Batson and the main villain, albeit a ride that is about 15 minutes too long. Nevertheless, you will enjoy the rollercoaster as it hits its peaks and valleys. There is strong comedic dialogue in this movie that will remind you of your childhood and family. With that said, I would’ve enjoyed this movie a little bit more with better demonstration of powers by both the villain and Captain Marvel. This is something that DC has struggled with in many of their films. Nevertheless Shazam! is a slow burn, but if you give it a chance by the end of movie I know you’ll be entertained and invested in the family.

With that said, gather the troops and head to the theater for this DC superhero movie. Of course, hit the matinee, if possible, but if you’re taking the kids you won’t be disappointed with your nighttime price.

I didn't even know about him until I played the first "Injustice" game back in 2013! That said, as soon as I learned about him, I did as much research as I could on this new (to me) super hero. I decided to start reading The New52 version of Shazam. I guess I picked the right version, because a few years later, it was announced that there will be a Shazam movie and it will be influenced by New52 Shazam!

I was pretty worried about the “Shazam!” movie considering DC movies’ track record (If anyone can **** it up, it’s Warner Bros. and DC)… Then the day came when I could finally see the movie… I sat in the theater as the credits rolled, mouth agape and corrected as **** This movie is AMAZING! It’s probably one of, it not THE best DC movies ever made! That's right, the likes of Batman and Superman have been cucked by none other than SHAZAM!

It’s no exaggeration that “Shazam!” is one of the best DC movies yet. The movie is a beautiful blend of goofy fun with proper superhero fanfare having scenes shifting between things kids will love and laugh at, to some pretty dark scenes that might actually freak a lot of kids out. The cinematography was spot on, and any overly analytical nerd (like me) will appreciate the superhero shots. The direction and acting were both impressive having Zachary Levi play a role he was tailor-made for with surprisingly excellent child actors (the girl who played Darla was amazing).

Now, if I could pick ONE thing that I was disappointed in, it would be the post credit stuff: I was pretty disappointed that Tawky Tawny didn’t make a real appearance in the film (the Easter eggs were a nice touch), but I am even more disappointed and downright SHOCKED that they didn’t foreshadow Black Adam in the post credits. I honestly thought that Doctor Sivana into Black Adam would have been the perfect segue, but they decided to go with Mister Mind. I’ve been told that Black Adam will be getting his very own movie, I guess if any super villain deserves his own movie (aside from The Joker), it’s Black Adam.

I certainly hope that “Shazam!” will work as an eye opener for Warner Bros. and DC to NOT make their movies so dark/grim/dreary and realize that all they have to do is step out of their comfort zone just a bit and take a more fun and lighthearted approach with their movies. I also hope that this movie will raise Shazam awareness and give him the popularity he deserves as I feel that this tragically overlooked super hero is one of the most underrated DC figures ever. With Wonder Woman, Aquaman (kinda) and “Shazam!” being excellent movies, it feels like DC is finally on an official roll and Marvel might have some proper competition to work against.
