In my opinion, it was near the ranks of the Force Awakens. Obviously this movie does not have the same tone as episode 7, but all in all was highly entertaining and interesting for casual viewers or even Star Wars fans. A spinoff was not necessary to the franchise, but it wasn't at all terrible like episode 3 of the prequel trilogy. Not a bad entry into this universe as it did give more insight into what happened prior in the other trilogies. This is indeed an enjoyable flick that will not leave you disappointed unless you are not in favor of spinoffs of blockbuster movie franchises. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rogue One kept true to the Star Wars franchise, while deviating enough to create a memorable and unique movie. The characters were very memorable and well done. I think Jyn was the perfect protagonist for this movie and I loved her throughout. Chirrut Iwe and K2SO made the movie for me and I enjoyed their timely humor. The ending was fitting as we don't see any of these characters in a New Hope. The movies pace was perfect and I never felt bored and it never drawn out. All these elements combine to create the best Star Wars movie other than Empire. Overall, I would give it a 9.7. Expand

But i didn't like the first part of the story, were we saw a lot of really different planet in a short time for no reason it seems. It was also less fun than the first trilogy (4-5-6).

But it grew on me, the character are a lot better than in the new trilogy, and at least as good as luke, leia, han, obiwan, lando, r2d2 etc.
The fact that we can see a lot of planets and what means living under the rules of the Empire is also great (labor camp, mining facility, etc.).
Also, there is a lot of allusion to Rebels ! I didn't see that at the time.

Definitely, the only good SW from disney, the 7 and 8 are fun and all, but empty, the 7 is a 4 with more action and less storytelling and backstory, the 8 is more original, but the characters are so bad and the 'story' so uninteresting, that it can't save this trilogy.

Seriously, if you have time to see only one of the new disney SW movie, this is the one you should look at.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This for me is the best Star Wars movie ever, everything is so good, the action, the connection with the old movies, for todays resources this movie cannot be better, pity that the same director did not make Episode VIII, so until this point for me Disney was not destroying Star Wars. Everybody says "Disney destroyed Star Wars" but this is only because of Rian Johnson who really destroyed the saga forever with that ridiculous ep. 8 movie which is worst best seller of the history, Leia flying, stupid jokes like the "iron", those ridiculous birds, in that case better watch Spaceballs and poor Luke denigrated to the worst garbage of human being and with powers ridiculous for a Jedi, he died stupidly, please remake that film and put Rogue One director Gareth Edwards, Episode VIII should never had existed.I don't say that ep. 8 is a bad movie because Luke died, in Episode VII Han Solo died and killed the possibility to ever play together with Luke again, but anyway I liked the movie as it was a decent plot, if you are going to kill a super idol do it for a good reason, like it was done in Episode 7, not kill him because he got tired after use too much Jedi Power and leave episode 9 with nobody, even with a good plot you should be very careful if kill the Luke, now everybody is dead as Carrie Fisher died in the real world, whats the point of Episode 9? Who will be the stars, Chewbacca and androids? Unless they bring Lando to episode 9 for sure only teenagers will go to cinema to watch it. Fans of SW say "pretend ep.9 never existed" but it is difficult, specially that there will be an episode 9. Why Gareth Edwards does not make Episode IX and the next trilogy? I liked episode VII, but Rogue One is superior in every aspect, so why not bring the best guy for the next trilogy? I cant imagine how Gareth Edwards can fix the mess that Rian Johnson made, but I wouldn't be surprised that such great director would be able to find a way and give back life to the Star Wars Saga, Rogue One is so perfect, the last part of Darth Vader is the best of the best, also the CGI characters were awesome! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely brilliant choice of storyline, taking one or two lines from the original 1977 film and hooking in an entire film so that it segues seamlessly directly into the beginning of the original -- this film ends apparently only a few hours before the opening scene of the first "Star Wars". And that, very powerfully, gives us the feeling of having come "full circle" after forty years, after this Odyssey of disappointing sequels and prequels, here we are again -- back at the beginning! The real thing! Rogue One may well be the most magnificent prequel ever made, and it's the only "true" Star Wars prequel.

It gets off to a somewhat shaky start, and some of the side characters and subplots are half-hearted and unnecessary. If only those had been trimmed and tightened up, this would be a towering masterpiece like the original film.

NEVERTHELESS - once we get to the main event, and the battle drama unfolds in all its glory, all these minor concerns are swept away in a grand finale of wondrous spectacle, with a final sequence of utter genius.

The heroine's exit would have been more dramatic if she died wounded on the tower right after completing the transmission of the plans -- laughing defiance in the face of the Death Star commander on the screen just before they fired and blew her away. That's how I would have done it, haha!

It adds a richness and depth to the story of the original Star Wars while still serving as an engaging, character-driven drama with a leg to stand on its own.

As is to be expected at this point, Rogue One brings the world of the original trilogy into the 21st century with realistic, action-packed spectacle. The CGI blends in seamlessly with the practical sets and effects and gives an epic, lifelike, colossal scale to the galaxy far far away.

Although the characters are not as fully realized as they could be, the film sets them all up in such a way that it is understood who they are and what is important to them. It makes the most of the limited room for character arcs by establishing their individual goals and priorities and basing the story around their collective journey toward redemption and personal sacrifice. It's a unified character arc that is shared by the entire team of protagonists, and it's very touching. The story succeeds because it does what the Star Wars films have always done so well: it tells a complex story about people and their nature, not just about political events.

Where the film suffers most is in its antagonist. The Empire and its leaders make some unfathomably incompetent decisions that deflate a great deal of the tension from the story, particularly from the climax. Some of the dialogue is also a bit heavy handed and overly-dramatic, but most of it works quite well. It doesn't detract too much from the experience as the actors' competence largely makes up for the few screenwriting flaws.

Rogue One does drag a bit at times and is not quite as compelling as it could be, but it has plenty of charm, humor, and eye-popping action to make it fun. In addition to that, the themes of redemption and selfless sacrifice are handled with somber tact that makes this among the most thought-provoking and endearing of the Star Wars saga.

Wonderfully written, incredibly sad, yet hopeful. Gritty without being cheesy. Makes me tear up every time. People say, "unmemorable characters, bad score, pacing issues." Do not listen to them. Do. Not. Listen to them. This movie... oh, man, this movie... The only flaw I can think of is that Saw Gerrera's characterization is a bit confusing at times, but everything else... a masterpiece, and one of my favorite films of all time.

I have never seen a movie when after I saw it I really can't remember much about it. I don't remember any characters names outside of Vader and Tarkin and they were barely in the movie.

This has to be the most forgettable movie I have ever seen or at least in memory. I can't say I hate it ,for sure I can say I didn't like it. So this is tough to score and I even watched it a second time and when it was done I still couldn't remember much of any thing about the movie. I almost want to give this movie credit for being able to pull some thing like that off. To be able to make a movie that is orderless, tasteless, no texture, just plain forgettable is really some thing to me because normally any movie I could give you a real opionion on.

I mean I'm not even going to tell you to not see it or avoid it. This is not like TFA or TLJ which are just awful movies which I could easily say there are pure trash. I don't know what more to say really. See it don't see it I don't know.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mediocre at best.

This film is better than the main line Disney Star Wars films, but if we're honest with ourselves that not saying much.

The storyline is dull and predictable, the acting is passable and the visual effects are good.

My biggest gripe with the film is the way the "bad guys" (the Empire) are portrayed. Instead of the Heroes overcoming incredible odds against a tough enemy, but ultimately being victorious, the Empire is this film are instead bumbling morons who consistantly either do nothing or act to directly thwart their own plans. The best example of this is when the fleet turns up around the data core planet, the Rebels quite literaly could not have won if the Empire fleet had not turned up and ruined everything!

Also the blind monk on the beach scene... to quote Han Solo "thats not how the force works!"

The biggest saving grace of this film is the final scene on Tantive IV with Darth Vader. Possibly one of the best action sequences set to film and providing a clever and much needed tie in to the original trilogy.

Although by no means a must watch, if you find yourself at a loose end there are certainly worse things you can watch.

I take my Star Wars seriously as many fans do and I just found the main character to be so lackluster to try and carry this film. Underwhelming characters throughout the film made the film as a whole just 'alright'. The droid was very funny. Darth Vader was cool in the end, but his interactions with Krenig were somewhat cringy, but not as much as the CGI Grand Moff and Leia. Overall I didn't hate it, but It was not very noteworthy either. Expand

Only the characters could have been more interesting, and some political correct elements are obvious.

Great Movie! Likeable characters, very well embedded into the original franchise without mindlessly copying it (like episode 7 and 9).

This is the best StarWars Movie since Episode 6 released.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is easily the best of the Disney Star Wars films released so far. The writers were able to take two sentences from the opening crawl of a film made in 1977 and create a masterpiece that fits seamlessly into the established story, and even add and enhance it.
Immediately after seeing the midnight showing of the film on opening night I had to go home and watch Episode IV, and I was shocked at how well the writers had done. How many times do you see Vader actually angry, rather than coldly mocking? Not many. However, right after the introduction of the character we see him holding Captain Antilles of the Blockade Runner by the throat and choking him to death, then screaming at his men to find the plans. That scene makes sense after the hallway scene in Rogue One that ends with him watching the ship with the stolen plans flying away.
Little details like that make a film worth watching, and Rogue One is full of them.

When you think that Darth Vader made only a cameo you get the most badass scene you can imagine. You see the fear in his enemies eyes as they recognize that they are screwed. But lets start at the beginning. It was planned as spin off with the premise to be a war movie. “Good guys do horrible things in wars” was a quote of the director. There were massive reshoots and rumors about the movie. You can see it it the trailers. There are many scenes that are not in the movie. The cast is relativly good. Felicity Jones is the lead as Jyn Erso. She carries her role and burdens. Diego Luna as Cassian Andor is a rebel that does the dirty work for the Alliance that has to be done. He is not evil, more the kind of guy that sacrifices his soul for the sake of the greater good / others. The secret stars are Donnie Yen as Chirrut Inwe and Jiang Wen as Baze Malbus. The two are an awesome duo and so enjoyable to watch. Riz Ahmed delivers his role as imperial defector who seeks redemption. K-2SO a droid and former enforcer is also a highlight. I must mention that the Star Wars movies create a lot of good droid characters. For the villains: Ben Mendelson as Orsen Krennic is a perfect power hungry plotter and high ranking imperial (I think there is a huge overlap or there is even no difference). Then there is Darth Vader and an iconic character that returns (Wont spoil). Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrera is more a good bad guy or anti hero and underused. He is the kind of rebel that does all that is necessary no mater the causalities or morality. He is also someone who would never abandon a friend or break his own code of honor (He could have become the Che Guevara of Star Wars). The story starts slow and got better as the movie progresses. The final is just awesome. It is the spirit of the rebellion. The people that wont give up no matter the odds push forward on a suicide mission just to keep hope / the rebellion alive. They are outnumbered and have only the surprise attack and distraction advantage on their side. The Empire soldiers outnumber them at least 100 to 1, have superior weapon and can call for even more reinforcements. Its so good and immersive that I consider giving 10/10 for it alone and forget that the set up to get there is not worth this rating. Also the ending. I never thought that they have courage to pull this off. It gives the characters even more meaning. There are of cause the issues with the CGI. Some familiar characters look really weird. This is not that serious for me but I must admit that it is an issue that can hurt the experience for some. Overall the final safes this movie. It would be unremarkable but no failure without it. I will praise the characters and want to see more. I also want to see the original movie before the reshoots but don't think it is possible. Expand

Like prequels were the best ones for the kids that grew up with them. Some are better, some worse, so subjective in some cases, all them are Star Wars, I just enjoy it.
Rogue One is really a new paradigm. It's a branch in a new direction, in a wider angle.
I enjoyed Rogue One in a new level, different. It's so fresh as classic, so funny as heartbreaking, so old as new. It's awesome. Tasty. I love every character from this movie. It's a story about the real war of the stars, the war of the people who dies for the cause. It was necessary to explain Star Wars from this point of view.
To me, Rogue one is 9/10 as a movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm a die-hard Star Wars fan. I had really high hopes for this movie, especially since I also really liked The Force Awakens, and to be honest, this was a good movie, but not as good as I expected. The first act of this movie really had problems with the pacing. I wanted to see more deeply into the characters, and see what their personalities were like. It would have been also cool if they had back stories too, but the characters just feel forced in to me, without much characterization of them, which is really sloppy pacing to me. However, the 2nd and 3rd acts were much better in my opinion. We got a great storyline that connects to A New Hope, and there were some amazing emotional scenes as well. I also gotta admit that K-2SO's jokes had me laughing. Where the movie really stands out to me however is the 3rd act. We got some amazing battles, both in the galaxy and on the beach too. It was nice seeing all these things from previous Star Wars movies come back. The graphics were really nice too. So yeah, overall, not my favorite Star Wars movie, but it was certainly not bad. It has flaws, especially in the first act with the pacing, but I can forgive that because of the great storyline that conflicts with the characters and how the storyline connects to a New Hope, the hilarious jokes and emotional heartbreaking scenes, and the extremely amazing battles in the 3rd act. So overall, I'd recommend this Star Wars movie. I'm giving it a B and a 7/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rogue One is a solid movie all around. In terms of the new Disney-verse of Star Wars, this movie is my favorite, hands down. This movie captures a story that was actually never really talked about in the OT - getting the death star 1 plans - but its results were far reaching. R1 had a 100% unique story, a bunch of new characters, cameos from Clone Wars & Rebels, and a whole bunch of ships -- new and old. What really sets this apart from the other Disney-verse film at the time, Episode 7, is that the characters actually do NEW things that we've never seen before, not copy and paste the OT. The 3rd act of the film contained a scene that was every Star Wars fan's dream and the film wrapped up in a neat, self-contained story that fit pretty snug in between episodes 3 and 4.

It has its flaws, of course. The pacing of the movie was a serious black eye on the film. The years/settings/missions blurred by really fast in the middle of the movie, making it hard to keep up with. The 3rd act cleans this up, but you can tell there were development problems mid-film. The main characters were all cool, but there were so many new folks introduced at once that I could hardly even remember their names at the end of the film. I think they should have shrunk the crew down by 2-3 people and that would have still been enough to get the mission done.

All in all, this is a solid film and I walked out of the theater with joy. I really felt like it added a big piece to the Star Wars canon. It's the only Disney-verse SW film I've bought on DVD and I hope they try to repeat this same formula in the future.

The movie takes risks and try to explore other elements that the new trilogy was not able. The movie has its own essence. The movie has a very good cast of actors, a very good plot where most of the situations are well-constructed and has coherence during the development of them. The movie even accounts with a better soundtrack mixed and done by Michael Giacchino. The only problem with the movie is that it begins slowly than normal, but then, it reaches an important level of narrative until the end.

Also, the creators did not stint on a couple of nostalgic moments, showing us old and beloved characters. From a small minus, you can cancel a slightly bad attempt to return to the screens of characters whose actors have already left this world, which is why these computer faces and all their facial expressions are very striking. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a film that has the spirit of the classic movies, but that lacks something to be magnificent.
