Yet another book adaptation, "Ready Player One" turned out to be a solid film through and through. I would watch this again...for free of course but, a possible matinee price isn't bad to pay for a second showing. Expand

Ever since 2008's lukewarm Kingdom of Crystal Skull, Spielberg's heart is not in the blockbuster genre that he has literally invented. Ready Player One is at most his most 'serious' attempt at going back to this 'genre'. When it is clearly 'live action', it works wonders. When it is in the OASIS however, the action scenes feel 'floaty'. It almost feels like the current slew of young 'upstarts' have surpassed the 'master' in 'staging' CGI filled action sequences. Things picked up for the final third where you can feel that Spielberg magic again, yet when his serious films such as 'The Post' are more 'gripping' than his 'blockbuster films', you know that his heart is not fully on it anymore. The creator of the Oasis has died and has hidden an easter egg in the Oasis. The finder of this easter egg will become the new owner of the Oasis and will be given riches upon their imagination. We follow Wade Watts, an active player in the Oasis, as he tries to find the easter egg and win the prize. The movie has a lot of cool references to pop culture, including classic video games and movies. A lot of the movie is spent in the Oasis allowing for a lot of fun and interesting characters to be portrayed. The movie has a lot of fun high paced action sequences and has a good overall story. It is a movie that gamers will definitely enjoy for all the references, but even non-gamers can find a lot to enjoy about it as well. Expand

But I was wrong. As senior citizens, my boyfriend and I enjoyed the premise very much along with the references from the late 70’s to 80’s, which we lived through. I can see how a society who’s depressed and discouraged would use a fantasy world to escape from reality. Yes, this film is why we go to the movies. It was entertaining! Expand

Having never read it, I must say that I really enjoyed this for the most part and all of its numerous little hints, winks, references, etc. to countless other films, games, pop culture icons and phenomenons, etc. It did however become somewhat predictable and ridiculous at times, but the overall amount of fun I had with this film made up for that for the most part. Overall, it's got so many fun little details and moments packed into it that you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn't find at least a little bit of fun and enjoyment in this colorful and zany nostalgia trip. All the references and nods in the movie got tiring by about halfway through, I thought. There is a story here but it's so cliché and predictable. The movie has good effects and some cool action scenes so it's entertaining enough but it never goes further than that because it plays it so safe.

What I don't understand is why there are so many critics and users giving video game movies bad rep because they are close to the source material (ie feels like a game) though I don't think I've seen another movie resembling a video game as much as this and it has quite a high score (no pun)? Is it because the name of the director, purely? Cause what this movie contains is as many references and easter eggs as there are stars in the sky and the story is as basic and "ticking the boxes" as it gets. It makes sure it doesn't step on any toes anywhere in the world and it doesn't dare to go outside the box. It's a shame because it could've been so much more!

To be honest, if I didn't have Moviepass, I probably wouldn't have seen this in the theater, but I'm so glad I did.

Spielberg has recaptured the old magic he had with films like Jurassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark. This movie is straight-up fun. The entire virtual world in this film looks great, is inventive, and feels fully realized. (Heck the real-world dystopian future also looks pretty nice.) It's also a lot funnier than I expected too.

Yes, a few parts are rushed, some parts of the future world leave you asking questions, and a coupld of supporting characters are introduced too quickly and weakly, but ultimately these are minor issues compared to the strength of the film.

I highly recommend this.

Anyone disappointed with the most recent Star Wars should give this a chance. The references aren't as in your face or distracting as the marketing makes it seem, the movie has an internal logic to it that will make sense once you see it. Honestly, it was refreshing to see a modern Action-Adventure that is told with the classic format. There's a hero and a group of his friends trying to take down a clear-cut villain. Its a setup we've seen many times before, but with a new spin. Great fun all around, I'm gonna go back and see it again this weekend! Don't listen to the haters or critics who are out of touch with reality, they're all probably working for IOI. Expand

Unfortunately the movie was a huge disappointment. The tone of movie is inconsistent, sometimes it's very real and at other times it's completely contrived and fairy tale. In the end it seems like it was targeted for 12 year olds. Some of the scenes work and others fall flat. The humor never really connects and feels forced. It doesn't feel like an adaptation of the novel, instead it feels like an adaption of a video game based on the novel. Expand

If you read the book Ready Player One for the love of God don't see the movie. It's a train wreck. I mean, I know that things get cut and storylines can change when they make a movie from a book, but there is no excuse for this monstrosity. Barely any references to anything in the book: no Dungeons and Dragons, no Max Headroom, barely any 80's music or references to 80's movies, no Joust, no Ferris Beuller, no Monty Python, no Blade Runner, barely any old school video games... The quests all changed, the hints changed, the locations all changed. Ugh. Ernest Cline should be ashamed of what he helped create in this screenplay. He sold out. Expand

The movie as a whole as an enjoyable experience. It was funny and entertaining and I did not regret watching it.
However, the movie is also exceptionally parasitic. It feeds on content and pop culture created by far greater writers, visuals from significantly more competent designers and narrative from better authors. The world itself only carries the story the movie tells and it only manages to do so because the story is light and thin as a feather.
In my opinion it is a decent children's movie that is tailored to be easily watchable for adults. The visuals are quite good and the special effects blend well. It is, however, no masterpiece in no way whatsoever. It will sink below and beneath almost every cultural reference that it has exploited to boost itself with third party content.

Before you read this, I DID NOT READ THE BOOK, so this is based on the movie itself.

To be quite honest, there was a lot of hype surrounding this movie with a pretty exciting trailer. I looked at that trailer, and came to the conclusion that it could go one of two ways. The film could be really good, or it could really suck and all the references would be gimmicks. Well, to be honest, I really enjoyed the movie. I felt the story was great with the shift to and from fantasy and reality. I loved the fact that I caught so many easter eggs along the way as well. I loved that it incorporated nostalgia and friendship into one movie, and those battle scenes though. I liked this movie so much it even brought a tear to my eye at one point. I feel as if this movie is something everyone can enjoy. Take your significant other, parents, friends, etc. to see it. I'm sure they'd love it as much as I did.

Сюжет: Можно было бы что-то выдумать, и сказать что он запутанный, но нет. Фильм до боли прост, но что самое главное, таким он и должен быть. Если бы Спилберг хотел полностью передать происходящие книги на экран, то скорее всего в два с чём-то часа он бы не влез. Я прекрасно понимаю, что они немного поковеркали книгу, но фильму это пошло только на пользу, по этому с сюжетом все хорошо;

Актёры: Каст реально вышел неплохим, когда я первый раз увидел трейлер, сразу же возникли мысли по поводу того, что каст очень слабый и скорее всего мне не зайдёт. Но опять же таки, актеры выложились по максимуму, и с кастом тоже все хорошо;

Графон: Я уже давно начал плеваться на графон в фильмах, но черт возьми, «Первому игроку приготовится» выглядит просто ошеломительно. Я не знаю как фильм будет выглядит в обычных кинотеатрах, но в IMAX он выглядит просто шикарно. CGI не подвёл, весь фильм сидел с открытым ртом, офигивая от картинки; Отсылки: Скорее всего одним из самых главных аспектов данного фильма - это пасхалки. Вы скорее всего даже представить не можете сколько их, сидя в кинотеатре я иногда даже подрывался видя своих любимых персонажей игр. Да и вообще, скорее всего это единственный фильм в котором присутствует так много пасхалок с игр, фильмов, комиксов, манги и т.д.; Звуковое сопровождение: Фильм пропитан хитами 80’х, и это очень круто. Каждый трек идеально вписывается в концепцию происходящего. Но было пару экшен-сцен, где вовсе не было музыки, и это показалось мне немного странным. Но в целом, звук и музыкальное сопровождение отличное; Итог: Если вы хоть что-то понимаете в играх, или даже играли в них, не важно, олдфаг вы или нью плеер, вы 100% найдёте персонажа которого знаете, и я вас уверяю вы будете в полнейшем шоке от масштабности этого фильма. Лично я давно не смотрел таких подорванных фильмов с таким гигантским числом отсылок. Все мы знаем, что фильмы по играм обычно проваливаются, но этот фильм исключение. Из-за того, что фильм снят по книге, а те фрагменты из игры, будь то персонажи или локации, служат дополнительными элементами. Когда я вышел из зала, меня переполняло чувство безудержной радости, мне действительно очень понравился фильм и я миллион процентов схожу на него еще раз, и вам советую;

The film is quite funny too, with a lot of clever jokes. However, the characters are fine, save for a few of them, but there is little to feel for these characters as the story arcs are kind of generic. Perhaps the biggest flaw comes from the pacing; often it feels like the film makers were trying to cram too much into the film at times. At times it felt refreshing & original, but still familar so audiences can relate if they don’t follow pop culture down to its roots. Fans of games, movies, & TV will be delighted since no stone is left unturned here. You got icons from all walks of genre ranging from anime, horror, sitcoms, monster movies, shooters, fighters, comedies, romance, & adventure. My only gripe is that Warner Bros continues to make all their modern day films in muted color paletes. The movie almost feels like it is in black & white at times. There are some flashy effects but every movie has that nowadays, it doesn't impress me anymore. Tons of CGI couldn't save the Star Wars prequels and it doesn't help here.

The whole point was just to cash in on pop culture references to better stuff from years ago instead of trying to create a compelling story of its own. The visuals are impressive but chaotic, like they just threw everything they had onscreen instead in hopes of overwhelming you instead of trying to craft something distinct and precise.

I'm also getting pretty tired of stories about escaping into virtual worlds, I think that reflects a rather unhealthy attitude in this age of widespread video game and smartphone addiction.

Visually stunning, pop culture references galore and some absolutely amazing set-pieces. I had very high expectations for this film and it had me smiling from start to finish. Does it lack a bit of heart? Perhaps but it just has so much going on that you're just swept along for the ride. Spielberg is the only director that could have had a crack at the adaptation and he's done a fantastic job overall. Love it! Expand

Графика была на высоте, хотя в некоторых местах был виден хромакей. Я конечно не понял работу оазиса в реальном мире, хотя было сделано все логично. Пожалуй это самый лучший фильм в начале года. The ensemble cast is great and the film is filled (for the most part) with little references rather than the direct references that the book takes. The film can seem a little rushed at the start in setting the world and the final act can feel a little prolonged but that all doesn’t matter when the story gets tied up perfectly in Spielberg-fashion.

Steven Spielberg took what I thought would be an unfilmable book and created a magical world, full to the brim of pop culture references that everyone can enjoy. Who really doubted Spielberg though?

I was a fan of the book when it first was released, being an 80's kid and all the book was a nostalgic love affair of the 80's and 90's. The movie not so much, it seemed shifted towards the 2000's millenial era with scraps of the 80's and 90's left over. Everything that made this such a great story in book form has been lost on the movie.
I will say it is a beautiful movie visually with the way it melds 3d animation and real film together into a seamless vision, and the sound design is really good as well. I kept hearing music from all these other great Spielberg movies being mixed among new stuff.
I just can't get over how hollywood keeps screwing up these great book when they make them into movies.

Not bad I guess.

It's a pretty movie. Some genuinely funny moments. It's great to see cyberpunk, video games, and VR represented in a mainstream movie. Product tie-ins / references are fun. Acting wasn't bad. Writing wasn't noticeably bad.

Really strains the limits for suspension of disbelief, both in terms of the technology and the world built in the movie.
Plot is predictable, unoriginal, and shallow.
No real reason to care about any of the characters.
Feels rushed, especially the love story.
Scope is way too big.

Not worth paying movie theater prices.
Probably worth renting at home or watching on Netflix.

Excited to see someone else make a (hopefully good) adaptation of Snow Crash if this movie sells well.

Is it an exact recreation of the novel? No, but what novel is. The film managed to retain the heart and themes that are present in the novel while delivering a nostalgia fueled adventure. Goodies meets Willy Wonka and I love it!!!

Light on character development, but heavy in nostalgic euphoria. A must-rewatch to catch all of its Easter eggs.
