Ready Player One is all what i needed and could hope for in a compilation movie of the best of best franchises.

if you read the book, you might not like this, according to every other person. i havent read it and probably will not read it. i dont care if its different because i have nothing to compare it to. its well worth a watch.

And even those characters are dramatically changed in certain aspects to fit the movie flow, that being the best way to describe it. Clearly the story had to change up a bit to fit the way a movie works but fundamental things for the book are nowhere in sight here and the dramatic shift from the beginning of this movie to the beginning of the book really dropped the ball for me. Frankly, the movie seemed to say "how can we get the most recognizable characters from modern pop culture onto the screen and how many of them can we fit at one time" for every single scene in the movie. That was it's most important goal seemingly, to get the most references into one single movie as possible. Yes the visuals are nice and the CGI for this movie is very well done. I would definitely recommend to the people who go see this to read the book after they get done watching it. It's much different and much more dynamic then this turned out to be. I'm actually surprised Earnest Cline would allow this much to have been changed to fit the movie. Because I certainly did not like it because it was nothing like the book. Expand

Steven Speilberg directs a terrific adaptation of Ernest Cline's novel of the same name, with brisk pacing, and terrific action. The characters are forgettable (so is the film), but it's okay to past-time with.

Appropriately enough, Ready Player One is a giant Easter egg full of smallerTwenty-seven years from today, a major corporation creates a new video game setup showing VR possibilities where only the sky limits places of potential excursion. Appropriately enough, Ready Player One is a giant Easter egg full of smaller Easter eggs on Easter weekend, starting with a Minecraft level as just one relatively small section of a huge digital game called, the “Oasis.”

Coming from Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg, the adaptation from Ernest Cline’s novel indeed becomes “Spielbergified,” since he appropriately met his popularity height throughout the seventies and eighties, which most influences the culture of Cline’s written Oasis. Inside Spielberg’s cinematic roller coaster, MTV music sucks you in right away, leading into the first few shots that travel across the homes’ windows of 2045 Columbus, Ohio to visualize living situations in what resembles a single continuous take, a term unique to his work dubbed a “oner.”

Columbus’s “stacks” build up this future suburb with trailers stacked upon one another, perhaps topping six stories in homes; most of the inhabitants sleeping on washing machine beds. The square shapes suggest imprisonment, unexpectedly absent of red or green hues, since nobody living here can win or lose in the video game corporation’s alternate competitive materiality. Spielberg makes everything huge in scale as you fly through the immersive 3D excitement; pure CGI permits a car race to Central Park, just one of three challenges to obtain one of three keys the Oasis’ creator has hidden.

Hitherto, nobody ever found a key, so those competitors, driving in instantly recognizable automobiles including a DeLorean and Adam West Batman’s Batmobile, must face a racetrack overrun by a T-Rex and King Kong. Honestly, this may be our future of gaming: the player walks on an omnidirectorial treadmill while their customized avatar roams the Oasis. Because humans gave up on solving problems, the Oasis lets players do anything, go anywhere; until watching the players fight against nonexistent problems disturbs you.

However, once the nostalgic surplus is forgotten, you must watch selfish individuals throw in random Marvel-style humor. Consequently, the political structure allows kids to somehow outsmart government authorities because apparently, adolescent empowerment tops priority above plot authenticity. Instead, an anti-Marxist piece enforces itself by blasting, “We’re Not Gonna Take It” to the volume of “Fight the Power” in Do the Right Thing.Despite uses of a clever Clark Kent disguise, these amateur players seldom prepare themselves in a sympathetic manner—one says he never saw The Shining, an important detail for when it gets said, and is played more for laughs than to make these guys seem like they’re equipped to overthrow the authorities.

The book’s author who adapted it, alongside Zak Penn (The Avengers), saw an excuse to throw Halo soldiers into a The Lord of the Rings climax but gave no characters a gradually learnt knowledge across the film’s runtime. Three of them, including the protagonist’s almost absent aunt, felt completely useless— some even sputtered Shia Labeouf’s “nononononono” on numerous occasions. Hence, several deus ex machinas extinguish a disco dance’s full visual impact midway through, a weak buildup due also to the whole first five minutes being pure voiceover narration. Since the most memorable scenes were in the trailer, teenage boys might see little rewatch value in such an ego-stroking Atari love-letter, ultimately set to deliver only whatever bland predictability was built up before frame number one.

Though Simon Pegg gives a brief yet decent performance, none of the other actors display a sense of urgency in the eyes, including one twelve-year-old kid who acts just like any other child in a huge movie. Highly doubtful anyone his age could notice the R-rated feature cameos anyway, like Chuckie and Robocop, proving why this feature should have just aimed strictly for adult viewers.

Rather than contemplate on how nostalgia halts our humane evolution, most young audiences will instead think, “OMG! The Millennium Falcon! Look! A huge castle! I wanna go there myself!” Especially since plot coincidences blur realism and digitalism, home seems dulled down, unlike the infinite technological possibilities. Why would Spielberg expect credibility in his message if his virtual universe here appears ultimately more fascinating than reality? That explains why youth culture for the most part approves of Ready Player One: it tells them to live inside an illusion, compels them with a misleading “moral,” then runs off with the theatergoer’s gullible gold coins in hand.

I have definitely discovered it with Ready Player One, a film that I think that if had fallen into the hands of an incompetent or inexperienced director would have ended up in an abominable disaster.

I haven't read the novel although I don't think it's necessary, after all we're talking about a movie, but it does makes me wonder, where's the story? What's the story? What's the whole point of it? Friendship? Ambition and corporate greed? Love? Technological slavery? Nostalgia?
In reality, it's never clear and all those elements are inside the film and yet nothing fits. All the pieces of the puzzle seem to be forced into the holes and they don't fit correctly.

Personally I must say, Ready Player One is the ultimate geek dream, many visual and musical references, it's indeed a big tribute to pop culture, nostalgia and video games but in the end it doesn't stop feeling empty. It's an intrepid, exciting and joyful show, but empty at the end of it all. The ending makes it very clear, because the big conflict, the big espectacle happens inside the virtual world so when you get back to reality, I was like, 'that's it?''

I'm disappointed because Ready Player One didn't offer me more than a 140-minute audiovisual trip that although its purpose is just to entertain, well I'm more of a fan of substance.

You will have a good time, I will not deny it, but it's like an attraction of an amusement park, you will forget about it as soon as the trip ends.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's not the best of Spielberg, but even so, this movie is pure entertainment.
The good: All references to pop culture that can be found, originality, the 140 minutes fly by and the CGI ("excellent" at the height of the movie "Avatar").
The bad: not get to empathize with the characters, villains very loose and the reason that motivates the main characters is poor.
The best: the "Shinning" scene. Woaw.
A show to see in the cinema and in 3D.

There are two sections that are imaginative and engaging (when they enter the Shining and the "real world" chase/loyalty centre scene) but much of this film is spent watching cgi characters zooming around like a PlayStation cut scene. There's no real depth or involvement to it because the characters are underwritten, the plot is clunky (there are several "why on earth would they do that?" moments) and I felt emotionally uninvested in anyone on screen. There's no jeopardy because everything looks CGI and you know EXACTLY how the plot will unfold. Yes, there are lots of references to 80s pop culture - I don't see why this makes the film better? This film could do with more dimensions in its plot and characters and fewer dimensions visually. And it was almost two and a half hours long. I was pretty bored by the end. Expand

Upon his death the creator of The Oasis sets players the challenge of locating three keys hidden inside the virtual world, the winner will be rewarded with full ownership of The Oasis and all the riches that entails.

All in all Ready Player One is a relatively entertaining movie, one that is at its best when we’re inside the virtual world allowing the spectacular special effects to offer a visual treat and bring to life all manner of pop cultural icons from King Kong to the hotel from The Shining. Once outside in the “real world” the movie does often drag a little however and, seeing as how most of the supporting characters aren’t particularly well developed anyway, trimming 20-30 minutes from the 2 hour 20 minute run time could really have helped with the pacing issues that drag it down slightly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ready Player One is a disgrace to cinema, pop culture and humanity as a whole! This is the first time I write a review about something ever, because how disgusting this movie is.
The plot is so linear and poorly written, that you know after 4 min into the movie what will happen and then exactly that happens with no twist and turns. Zero effort. The movie is filled to the brim with pop culture references, but massacres them by not understanding the essence of them. For example, they add a giant witch and a giant axe to the labyrinth scene in the Shining, not understanding what made the Shining scary at all. Finally they misrepresent the gaming culture as a whole only showing gaming as a medium to escape reality. Even though some people might use gaming as an escape, the majority of people play video games as a form of entertainment, while still living as social mature human beings in modern society. It is also completely laughable, that they show people running around in the city with VR headsets on. First of all, VR headsets in the future would look nothing like the ones we have today and second, everyone would bump into objects and each other when using a VR headset in the goddamn city!
This movie truly shows how arrogant, lazy and ignorant Spielberg has become and how little effort movies are allowed to make to be called a success. 0/10

This film is sometimes fun in a splashy sort of way. What is annoying is that the changes seem intended to give Artemis a kick-ass girl-power role. What the director seems to have missed is that she already was kick-ass in the book in a more subtle way. In making these changes, Parsival became a shadow of the character he should be.

I tried hard to like it.

I would say to anyone leaving a negative review because you read the book and your upset the book is not like the movie I would try to realize that there are lots of book to movie adaptations that are not like the movie. The author and Steven were the writers and worked together on the script. There are some elements that just dont work from book to movie. We spend half of this movie in that same animated experience (with lots of 80s cultural references). Part of the quest is fought by avatars, while the humans create conflict back in reality. The visuals are sometimes dazzling and they move by really fast (lots of opportunities for freeze frames to look for Easter eggs). The story isn't unique: scrappy regular guys take on the powerful corp that wants to own the technology. The characters aren't especially original and the performances are nothing special (Mark Rylance is the only standout). There aren't lots of typical Spielberg touches (strong emotional connections, iconic moments), but he does keep it moving at a lively pace. BTW, this begs to be seen on the big screen because there's so much to see. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Endings can really ruin the whole thing.(edit:forgot to put, the action was pretty amazing and at times was at a next level of action. even borrowed my favorite post synder zoom effect. yet doing to many sweeping overhead shots of all the stuff on screen is too distant, holding still or besides the great race scene holding diologue for later would have been much appreciate) Same with expecting something to happen that will bring great joy and of course, it never happens. That led to this sharp score. He's Clark Kent, it's awsome to know the CEO(chief eperating officer) would choose superman as the ultimate character. I think I saw him smack a giant in a preview but maybe ben middleson should be known as the courier of cut content(ooh that sounds cleva. Yep my reason for excluding the r did show up around 3 times before her thumnail part and those blinks were great but only blinks. She doesn't look right, though not as unpleasant as her first ever showing and I know not to expect much for those short, probobly french word things but I expected at least a sentence or to get her wrong(by doing her right, most of her appeal is taking her base and then imagining a more personable altered version)longer. But that was quarters(they literally bleed money *holds for laughs* by the way that is called a asterisk) when I could already imagine him ripping open his suit and flying towards enemies with the ultimate accelerated punch. They didn't use superman, but you missed him in the background, thanks but don't care. I know mecha godzilla is the 11(this movie has the most references it kills the word so here's mine) but, well, maybe the excuse is they really wanted iron giant and gundam to actually destroy something. so thats that and the endings conclusion, rule 1 save any overt message for the last line, is something that even those with low "thinking" skills come up with. but videogames aren't real. Even though they are. Are you i8magining all those electrons on the screen, was it some, life long waking dream? It harkens back to the 80's when according to(I fixed it from "the" but ypu'd probobly read it right anyway) blood dragon, the message was to turn off the tv. It was rreasonable to expect maybe speilberg could think higher and say something more relevant, appropriate but I sadly had to confirm my assessment of his values, should he really be the one after scott to do halo, a older guy with no if little understanding of something "new." Someone who makes the opposite of games. Maybe he did change his message with the times, you can have fun with some distracting and harmful device, just make sure to take a break. Everything in moderation, something i definitely don't go by. But it's the only place you can get a decent meal, with fully body feedback, feeling the act of eating isn't far fetched. Maybe you could put in words, or straight sentences if discussing the actual physics of it doesn't make money, ooh this is sounding real mean. But maybe, is this the 3rd time? berg which i think means castle in german does the annoying thing that arguers do, they know they are right even if they can't say why....ooh that was good. Expand

I read the book twice and in my opinion the movie does a pretty good job at portraying the story, with a few minor and a couple major things changed. Nothing that messes with the story though.
The visuals are just as I imagined them when reading the book - so job well done there! It's pretty much spot-on. The IOI makes me think of RoboCop.

It is, obviously, a CGI heavy movie. This both works in its favor, but also against it. Against it because it makes the movie seem a bit synthetic - which it is of course. But it does seem to struggle in finding a way in which it should portray people wearing the goggles versus what they are doing inside the Oasis. For instance, there's several scenes where people wearing VR goggles in the streets are running down the street to mimic that motion in VR. That makes absolutely NO sense. People would be running into walls, and into each other. That was just silly, and they do it several times. But I can see past that.

The story is pretty good, the characters are interesting although some of them should have been fleshed out better.

All in all I was very well entertained, and some of the scenes were downright fantastic! Not gonna mention which, but you'll know when you see it.

The characters are one dimensional, the acting is campy and the movie doesn't trust its audience since it spells out everything for us instead of trusting us to connect the dots in the world they built. That said, the VR world is fantastic and the action and sound design is captivating. The movie never feels boring and move quickly. I wish the movie could have reached a little deeper to touch on themes such as the effects of people choosing fantasy worlds over reality or how games might effect our real world behavior. However, as a popcorn flick it was entertaining and fun. Expand

He returns'Ready Player One' is the most entertaining, most fun, and most visually stunning movies in 2018, and I loved every minute of it. Directed by Steven Spielberg - at 71 years old - he shows that he hasn't lost any of that old magic. He returns to thrilling sci-fi adventures where a group of young kids explore a world of wonder and endless possibilities. The year is 2045, and like most recent Hollywood blockbusters, the future is doomed. We meet a young boy named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), he says his name is like that because his deceased father thought it would be like a cool superhero name like "Peter Parker" and "Bruce Banner" (and the references don't stop there). Due to society being so stricken and misery populating the world, he often escapes into the virtual reality world known as "The Oasis". The VR goggles enter him into his Avatar named "Parzival", and the world of the Oasis is absolutely crafted in such a stunning way, you feel immersed and almost lost in its universe. The great mind behind the virtual world of the Oasis is James Halliday (Mark Rylance), who developed this feature over a decade before, to stop people from focusing too much on the harsh and economically struck reality, and escape to a world where they can feel free to be whatever they want. However, since Halliday died a few years back, he posted a video stating that he has left an Easter Egg somewhere deep within the Oasis, and that there are three keys to collect, in order to retrieve the egg. It's a race, and everyone begins to compete. And it is there that we meet our main antagonist of the film, Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn) who wants the egg for himself so that the Oasis can belong to him. And he will stop at nothing to make sure that he gets there first. Spielberg adapts this novel from Ernest Cline and uses many of the pop-culture references well... from "Back to the Future", "King Kong" to "The Iron Giant", they're all in there for a reason. Not to add to our nostalgic enjoyment. This is Steven Spielberg's most exciting adventure since 'Minority Report' (2002), it's fast, always moving, and you're never bored watching it. I felt like a child again watching this movie as it's been so long since Spielberg has made a blockbuster movie. Yes, I absolutely loved 'Lincoln' (2012) as well as 'Bridge of Spies' (2015), but 'Ready Player One' is what Spielberg used to be, and he should continue to make more films like this. I can't wait to see it again. Expand

Anybody who has played those know that sometimes you play the game, not for the story, but for the gameplay. Treat this like a game cut scene and your expectations will be more on par with the audience this movie was meant to reach.

It is a thrill ride through the pop culture and cameos of our favorite characters and icons over the past 30 years. It is a tribute to the online gaming community which is as chaotic as it is creative, as boorish as it is flamboyant, and as resourceful as it is crazy. Love it for what is. It is for us who stare into screens all night earning the next level of gear, who bashed the controller over every death, who screamed obscenities through the mic at the losers in king of the hill, who laughed our asses off over Leroy Jenkins.

Enjoy it for being what it is...an nod to gamers everywhere.

I went in with closed eyes and watched the movie as if it were standalone and not based on one of my favorite books of all time.

The movie setting was believable; set in a 2044, the technological advances weren't over the top, and very reasonable. The dystopian living areas made sense for the state of the world. Two of the main characters, Parzival and Aech, were introduced in a good fashion. The main character (Wade in real life) was given a brief backstory that allowed us to understand his situation, and his relationship with his cyber friend that he know has Aech. Their backstory was relate-able to anyone whom has every had a friend that they only knew through the internet. The rest of the "high-five" in the movie were introduced very quickly without much mention of where they came from. I would have liked to see a little more development between Parzival and Art3mis before they actually came into contact with each other. The action was very good and the scenes were very well put together. The comedic aspects were great, even from the antagonists.

I found the 80's nostalgia to be more visual than referenced; I won't spoil the Where's Waldo spotting of fun characters.

Overall, the movie is very fun but seemed a little fast paced in regards to the main character development. If you are looking for a replica of the book, you will be mildly disappointed; there are tons of differences. If you go in, like me, expecting to use it as just a reference, you will be in for a great ride.

If you have not been exposedSpielberg took the plot line for each character from the book, popped it in a blender and pulled them from a hat. If you've read the book, or listened to the audio book, get ready, this is a major disappointment. If you have not been exposed to the book in any form - you'll probably love it. The story line is the same general premise, but the gates don't reflect anything in the book, how they unlock the keys don't reflect anything in the book, and how the protagonist and antagonist interact is maimed by flipping character plot lines to different characters as mentioned before. IF you can get past those things and don't sit shaking your head in disbelief that this book was fodder for Spielberg to basically completely re-write, then you may enjoy this movie. If you can put those things behind, you will find that Spielberg created a video game of modern era out of older era games, but then changed all of those too. He managed to leave "Adventure" alone, and even managed to give Warren Robinette his due, though he literally murdered every other reference in the book. The animation was beautifully mastered to look like a video game, rather than real life. But the book makes it clear that the Oasis draws a new reality onto your retinas that is of such high quality, the real world seemed washed out. Spielberg failed to duplicate this as he decided to make all but a couple of scenes completely animated. Story lines. Had this movie followed the book, the final product would have not only had more socio-political impact, but he could have made something FAR greater than what I'm going to end by calling, garbage. No thank you Spielberg. Just because you can ruin a good book, doesn't mean you should use your creative license to do so. My final review is 3/10 because he gets about 3/10ths of the original content into the movie.. even though he murders it all the way through. Do yourself a favor - if you are going to watch this movie - promise yourself to never read the book - because you'll never see Spielberg in the same light again. Expand

The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of video games most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Parzival's optimistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterization - his personal philosophy draws heavily from the video game series Final Fantasy, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Ready Player One truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Parzival's existential catchphrase "You're full of feces" which itself is a cryptic reference to Activision's video game epic Call Of Duty. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Steven Spielberg's genius unfolds itself on their theater screens. The picture plays like a glitzy, nostalgic stroll down an '80s version of memory lane, chock full of nonstop references to the decade's movies. music and memes (in itself an odd fascination for characters in a story set in 2045). What's worse, the film lacks a fundamentally compelling story and takes about 45 minutes too long to get to a central message that becomes patently obvious early on in the picture. If you're looking for purely mindless entertainment, you'll probably find this moderately amusing, but, if you want something more substantive, skip this one and watch one of the filmmaker's earlier (and much better) offerings. 2. First action sequence is wonderful, but the rest are very, very mediocre. It is not the blast that some people say it is.

3. The movie is advertised as a gamer's film, but it really isn't. The game world of Oasis in which much of the movie takes place is really not impressive at all, either in content or in visuals. And a surprisingly large portion of the movie takes place in the real world of the dystopian future, which is designed equally badly.

Conclusion: A cinematic version of the "How do you do, fellow kids?", created by an old master who seems out of practice.

Let's face it, the only reason everyone is being unnecessarily kind to Ready Player One is Steven Spielberg. Starring numerous characters from games and movies that you love, ie the second reason everyone is loving Ready Player One. The visuals look great but for me it just felt too much like a never ending video game cutscene that I couldn't skip.

Set in a dystopian 2045, the only way people cope is by escaping into OASIS, a virtual reality created by James Halliday (Mark Rylance) where the only limit is your imagination. After Halliday's death he has left a series of challenges that will lead the players to an Easter egg which will give the player who finds it his fortune and control of the game. Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) is just one of the many people who spends most of his time in the OASIS desperately trying to win the digital Easter egg. Every scene is an assault on the eyes, there is so much to take in you spend the majority of the movie preoccupied with spotting reference upon reference. I'm not going to lie, I loved seeing the Iron Giant, and the DeLorean on the big screen. Not to mention the references to Alien, Superman, Jurassic Park etc. and I absolutely loved that sequence about the Shining. Brilliant, well thought out and entertaining. Yet that's all Ready Player One is, everything you loved as a kid brought together in one film. If you strip away the nostalgia and references you're left with a story you've seen done countless times before. The good guys going up against the evil corporate suits, because if the they win it's game over man. All the nostalgia is constantly in your face to distract you from how ridiculous the main characters look. Cartoonish avatars that just couldn't get me to stop seeing them as generic video game characters. Ready Player One doesn't feel like a film, it feels like a game, only you're not playing it, you're watching someone else play it. Recommended for all the gamers and/or Spielberg fans.

The world building is limited to the first 5 minutes of the film where Wade (aka Parzival) narrates an introduction to the viewers. It doesn't adequately explain WHY the real world has become so lousy that everyone wants to escape to the OASIS, merely that the OASIS has become the preferred escapism drug of the masses. No attempt is made to tie in the constant 80's references, leaving the viewer to wonder why kids in 2045 would give a damn about John Hughes or Twisted Sister. All we're really told is that the real world sucks, everyone loves the OASIS, and that if the Big Bad™ IOI and Sorrento win the late James Halladay's easter egg hunt the OASIS will become as lousy as the real world. So players like Wade and his best friend Aech are on a quest to win the hunt and save the OASIS from IOI's corporate oppression.

Literally a few minutes later, we're introduced to Art3mis and the movie shifts entirely in tone. Art3mis is originally presented to the audience as a strong character who is apparently well known within the OASIS as one of the top Egg Hunters -- Gunters, in the parlance of the movie and book -- and Parzival is immediately smitten with her despite only seeing her avatar on Kaira's bike from AKIRA. At this point the movie becomes a cliche teen love, "get the girl" movie. Parzival still cares about the OASIS but only in the context of his relationship with Art3mis.

In the real world, Art3mis (aka Samantha Cook) is portrayed as a member of some rebellion group who has at least one shadow operative working behind the scenes. Yet barely an hour after being introduced to Art3mis as a strong character with an axe to grind against IOI (and 10 minutes after meeting her in the real), Art3mis' character is turned into a shrinking violet who defers to Parzival and even sacrifices herself to the very thing that she was fighting against in order to save Wade in the real. This, of course, sets up the final conflict which becomes more about saving Art3mis than saving the OASIS. Parzival trashing IOI and bringing down Sorrento is a bonus but the real reason he feels he has to win the Easter Egg hunt is to rescue his love interest from the clutches of IOI.

The other three members of the high five - Aech (Parzival's best friend ever), Daito, and Sho - are all given short shrift. They are paper thin characters both in the OASIS and in the real. Aech is the most prominent but Aech's role devolves into mid-movie comic relief and late movie chauffeur. Daito and Sho are practically afterthoughts.

The movie bombards the viewer with CGI special effects and nostalgia bombs. It's worth noting, however, that a good 90 percent of the nostalgia and in-movie pop culture references were in the trailers. If you've seen the reveal trailer, the second trailer, and the final trailer you've seen almost all of the references. There's only three sections not shown in the trailers with a handful of references. The high point of the nostalgia trip is the second key challenge within a recreation of Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining". As an aside, I couldn't help but wonder why, in this universe, video gaming development died circa 2017 -- where everyone is still playing Overwatch, Borderlands, Halo, and DOOM 30+ years later. It's as if the OASIS came out and game developers just gave up. Since the movie doesn't take the time to really explain WHY these old franchises and 80's nostalgia are so prevalent, it feels shoehorned in and makes very little sense.

Nostalgia alone is why this movie is getting high ratings by viewers. Take off the nostalgia goggles and evaluate the movie for the story it tells and how it tells it. It wants to be a nostalgia driven, young adult dystopia movie like Hunger Games or Maze Runner but lacks the story chops to pull it off and relies on CGI as glue to hold together the weak narrative. Bear in mind that this is just a view of the movie on its own merits. If I really wanted to do a deep dive comparing it to the book, well, that would take far too long. Suffice to say, if you liked the book and are expecting the book, you'll be disappointed. Especially if you're a fan of Ogden Morrow's character from the book.

reality is the only real thing..

Ready Player One

The feature demands attention through highly configured rich details on visual asthetics which is admirable, for despite of having such a large range on the material the makers keep it clean (like coins are used instead of blood when someone is eliminated) and pleasing to the audience. But unfortunately the idea isn't intriguing enough to invest in it, in the first place for it seems like a compilation of different borrowed concepts that may look amazing but feels a bit eerie. Steven Speilberg saves the feature through his brilliant execution skills and projecting the anticipated vision on screen. On performance level, there isn't much range provided to the characters in the plot to express thoroughly but still Taylor Sheridan and Olivia Cooke are convincing and is supported by a great cast like Mark Rylance and Simon Pegg. Ready Player One takes its time in its first act and settles in perfectly before the second act kicks in where everything goes predictable but some throwbacks on old classic features (the quest for the second key is quite amusing) holds you on the seat only to mesmerize you in its third act where the plot enfolds in each phase with some brilliant action sequences and good old drama.

I feel the movie does a fine job at telling just whats going on and showing it in a beautiful fashion. And there lies my one gripe with the movie.

Ready Player One has a very bad tendency of telling instead of showing. This is most notable in the opening minutes of the show where plenty of time is spent narrating and explaining the plot. I feel this hurts the movie as the visuals tell a lot and do so in a much cleaner way. For example the way they explain how his family dynamic works flows very well and with just a couple of character actions you can easily see what everyone's feelings towards each other are. Overall I feel if more scenes were conveyed like this the movie could easily be a 9.

Putting that aside however I found the movie very refreshing. For a movie all about the virtual world it felt very nice how it was handled. And without going into spoilers I have to say the ending while semi hand fisted legitimately gave me chills from how it was handles. Overall there's a lot of things I could praise the movie on but nothing would put into words how well I believe the imagery in it works to drill into the viewer's heart.

Details and plot are definitely tinkered around with, which I didn't mind too much. What most bothered me was how superficial it felt, and how the premise of having everyone in the world logged into a video game is never explored past a cliche-laden generalization of the entire situation. Besides that, I could have used more good 80's music, and the CGI wasn't bad, but it just got too excessive for me. See it if you want some moderately satisfying entertainment, and nothing else. Ironically, given the storyline, Mr Spielberg's artistic repertoire has not significantly advanced since the 1980s, and this is obvious in the appallingly stereotyped portrayal of the Bad Guy and of the Girl Interest - but most clearly thrown into shade by the cinematic quotations from the far more sophisticated Stanley Kubrick. The actors are never given space to breathe, the character development is paper-thin, and every performance is therefore hackneyed to the point of cringeworthiness. If you have read the book, this film will appall you, and if you have not read the book, there is no reason to see this film. Expand

Good riddance,Weird Spielberg who makes great Oscar movies for a gold living (Lincoln,The Post) and welcome back,Spielberg who makes adventurous movies (Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Ready Player One and ET).
Now that I got that out of the way, let's start the review!
You know what's the scariest thing to exist after you walk out of a movie whose franchise is a great big success? Making your own opinions while comparing it to other existing products. That's what Ready Player One made me think after the credits rolled, even if I had a big smile of satisfaction (no,I'm not counting the IMAX too),and that's what fears me the most, since my opinion can hurt someone, but here we go:
I think Ready Player One is a more incredible movie than The Incredibles and more “Crossover-ific” than The Avengers.
LET ME EXPLAIN.
Sure, part of me was smiling at the references (Minecraft of all people,Halo, Overwatch…),but I was surprised by how some of the Easter Eggs were part of the story (Chucky being a toy a-la Terminator,The Iron Giant being upgraded etc.),as well as Spielberg actually caring about the source material, something I expect out of existing properties like this or the recent Black Panther, where if a less-talented director would've done this or that,it could've gone both ways.
Here we have a movie whose director does what he can to serve a well told story, with characters you’ll definitely root for (for the most part) and lots of references that,in part, are actually relevant to the story instead of being Captain America in a chair saying “I understood that reference” or Tony Stark saying “That dude's playing Galaga!”.
As for the characters, they give you just enough to make you care about them, except for James Halliday (the creator of the OASIS,played by Oscar winner Mark Rylance),whose writing is certainly better than Steppenwolf from Justice League, but still not enough to make you say “I wonder what he does next…”, although I give Spielberg & Co. credit for actually trying instead of making it this 2D character.
The technology used for this movie is definitely something to praise.
Trust me when I say “If you'll see it in IMAX 3D,you'll think Doctor Strange was just a little kid's dream afterwards with the headache-assured visuals”,because, while some of the moments have generic action set pieces, they roll as fast (and furious) as one of those Star Wars attractions at Disneyland.
Everything is so frenetic and exactly paced, you'll be in for a 2h 20m Rollercoaster, with the runtime being solid.
I even liked Alan Silvestri’s score here, and while it has the flaws (trying to be hip-and-cool with the 80s? Here we go…), it's filled with goofy yet emotional moments.
So...Yeah,I'm in a Mad Max Fury Road (or Spider-Man 2) status now, where I can't recommend it enough just because of how it was a good time at the movies (again, not counting the luxury of IMAX 3D),so I definitely give it a thumbs up. WAY UP. Ready Player One is bound to be of the most iconic movies for this generation's kids thanks to Spielberg's egregious directing, stunning visuals and a good yet charismatic story. It's not one of Spielberg's best, but it's almost there, since its way better than The Post.

It's fun to watch for any gamer, but especially if you're one born in the 80's. No movie is going to be as good or detailed as the book and it looks as though there was a compromise of certain events from the book that wouldn't make for very exciting scenes. The movie has to make money and so they changed some things to appeal to a broader and younger audience. It's worth it to see if you're in the mood to relax with a goofy nerdy flick, but if you're someone who wants it to be as amazing as the story you've built in your head from the book then don't bother. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a really special movie. It feels more like a metaphor to a gamers life, how addicted gamers really lose touch with reality, and when they die it's like they lost "everything". It's visually stunning, making you feel like you're in an actual game, and also makes you think you're in one with the way the story flows.

The story was great touching other topics as 'don't trust everyone you meet online', with the character Aech showing first hand how that can happen.

But there's a small issue, it looks really good with a great telling story, but the characters seem really undeveloped, the real only development we get is from the two main characters and a very weak villain (character wise) who just wants the money. From some other characters we only get their real names and real appearances and they leave it at that

I also really liked the characters they added, the search for them made my movie experience way more fun. Some of them were very important to the plot, but others were really subtle and those were the fun ones to find

In all fairness, it could never have fully lived up to the hype as the novel on which it is based is far too difficult to fully realise on screen. Therefore, my expectations were tempered by the knowledge that it would be unreasonable to expect the film to cover everything. What I wasn't expecting was a film that failed to cover virtually any aspect of the novel with anything more than a thin veneer of respect for the source material. There is spectacle to be enjoyed here, though it is often visually cluttered, and the lighting fast pace holds the audiences interest. However, the script of merely sufficient, the soundtrack isn't as iconic as needs to be, the plot lacks all depth, and this fails to address any of the myriad social, gender, class, and economic commentary that made the novel so engaging. The basic concept of the novel is there, but the lack of complexity and thematic interest means this is never elevated above the superficial, making for a hollow and unsatisfying experience. 4.78/10 Expand

When James Halliday (Mark Rylance), the creator of the OASIS dies, he offers the players around the world the chance to inherit his massive fortune and his company only if they can find a hidden "Easter Egg" along with three keys needed to unlock it. Now, a young "gunter" (someone that's dedicated to finding the keys and the egg) named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) and his brave companions consisting of the beautiful Arti3mis (Olivia Cooke), his best friend Aech (Lena Waithe), and the brothers Daito (Win Morisaki) and Sho (Philip Zao) must find these items before the ruthless IOI corporation led by the sinister Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn), can use the egg to privatize Halliday's virtual paradise...

Taking direct influence from the likes of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, The Matrix and Wreck-it Ralph, Steven Spielberg's loose adaptation of the 2011 80's pop culture love letter novel Ready Player One, is a wonderful throwback to the veteran director's Golden Age throughout the 1980's where he both produced and directed some of the most iconic fantasy/sci-fi films in the history of cinema such as Back to the Future, E.T and the Indiana Jones films.

Going into it's problems in which aside from some questionable overuse of dark blue tones in the color grading which makes it impossible to see the numerous cameos from the heavily advertised pop culture icons such as The Iron Giant, Gandalf and numerous others, The story takes huge liberties with the book's more intense tone and the pacing especially during the first act. goes by far too quickly for the world of the OASIS to be properly set-up for anyone new to this material or towards 80's to 90's pop culture as well.

However, Spielberg's first fantasy film since 2011's The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, does have it's heart in the right place in conveying the joy of escapism and creativity and unlike The Matrix's insistence that living in a fictional world is bad,no matter how bad the real world is, Ready Player One on the othe hand, in a similar method in how Hook told audiences that imagination and fun is important even if you're an adult, tells us that maybe spending time in a better world is not so bad after all.

Overall, Ready Player One while not rising to the levels of Spielberg's other films, much like Who Framed Roger Rabbit? before it, is a wonderful love letter to geek culture and the fantasy genre of the last few decades that proves that one of the longest surviving "Hollywood" brats can still provide solid family entertainment after all these years.

I could’ve not been more entertained when watching this film, there are next to zero sluggish moments and parts will you will turn your head way. Although the casting could have been better, this movie still has parts where you will go “wow” that’s some really good acting. But apart from that, Ready Player One is absolutely beautiful because of the gorgeous CGI this movie has to offer. The Story (the most important aspect) is very well thought out, but with that comes some confusion and parts that will have you maybe asking your friend what’s going on; other than that: the story is very good and very fun. “Ready Player One” would fall under the “Amazing” category.
