The impressive special effects and the videogame nostalgia can't save Pixels from being a boring, unfunny, predictable, plot hole filled mess from start to finish. And Kevin James is president? Seriously?

Ok now let's start off with the positives. There were a couple times I laughed, The whole video games attacking earth was entertaining and the video game battle sequences were well done and for once Hollywood produced an original movie. OK that's it for the positives. Even though I laughed at a couple parts it was a pretty big mess from start to finish. The actin was mediocre, the script was bland and the whole idea of using women as trophies when they saved the world. BELCH. I watched this movie because I love old school aracde games and even though Adam sandler does not make good movies nowadays he has had a couple of good ones such as 50 first dates, bedtime stories, billy Madison blended and a few others. However his acting felt very flat and so did the rest of the cast. Predictable with a few entertaining movies does not save this movie from the mess it really is. Now I just need to ease the memory of seeing pixels from my head. Expand

Seriously...every movie is the same movie as its predecessor... this could have been called Grownups 3 for all the difference it would have entailed ...same characters, actors, plots....
Does Adam Sandler even flinch at glorifying himself as a man-child in these movies anymore? Apparently not since he does it in every single damn movie he makes now....
I mean seriously... Kevin James as president? Does Sandler even bother making any of these premises even remotely conceivable anymore? You need to stop playing nepotism with your friends and start making real movies with a real cast... Either that or just do us all a favor and stop making movies...

The picture is horrible! The cinematography and special effects look like they were made with a free to download 3D maker software from a high school team class project! The acting is so poor that even Buzz Lightyear and Woody from Pixar's Toy Story have more EMOTION than Adam Sadler and the rest of the casting crew. The movie makes a decent try to reference the 80's through old time songs and even having a character dressed with jeans, spiky hair and ear rings similarly to the 80's fashion but the results end making him a parody (and no he was not meant to be a parody he was meant to be a cultural reference and they failed miserably on that).
The game fails to deliver any nostalgia regarding videogames of the 80's era. They even put cheating a videogame as a turning point to twist the plot!! No serious videogamer takes cheating or jokes about hacking a videogame lightly and it is definitely not appreciated!
Save yourselves and do not watch that movie.
To whom it may be like-able? To people with absolutely zero judgement or low self estime!
The plot is very bad, the dialogues are pathetic, the graphics are pathetic and the movie sucks!
DO NOT WATCH IT!!!!

So I just saw Pixels and it was pretty terrible and are you seriously surprised about that.

-The acting was dank.
- Adam Sandler not trying anymore.
- The effect's were alright.
- Josh Gad was so annoying in this movie, I mean he wouldn't stop shouting.
- Peter Dinklage was the only saving grace in the movie.
- Kevin James is an idiot.

I know some are expecting a long detail review of this but to be honest I want to save my strength and energy for another movie I'm going to review and that's The Third Man. I'm really taking my time with that and make the best out of it so before I review a masterpiece like The Third Man, here's something really ****

Video games really don't have a good reputation when it comes to having film adaptations. Sure we have a few good one's like Wreck it Wralph or Scott Pilgrim, but for the most part they seem to go down the same route as the Super Mario BrosVideo games really don't have a good reputation when it comes to having film adaptations. Sure we have a few good one's like Wreck it Wralph or Scott Pilgrim, but for the most part they seem to go down the same route as the Super Mario Bros movie where the film loses all the charm that made the game enjoyable to begin with. Part of the reason for this is they always seem to be put into dreadful hands. This time those dreadful hands are Happy Madison Productions, Sandler's film studio that have been producing his cinematic turds for 15 years now. And once again they have produced another insulting comedy, lacking any real charm and being light on laughs.

The plot unfolds because back in the 80's NASA sent several video games in to space to communicate to extraterrestrials. But their message of peace was misinterpreted as a declaration of war and the aliens send several video game characters to attack the earth. Thus President Cooper (Kevin James) recruits his childhood friend and gaming champion Brenner (Adam Sandler) to fight off the alien invasion.

Right away we've really got to suspend disbelief to accept the plot. Not just because of having to accept the poorly explained justification of why the aliens are attacking as video games, but also buying Kevin James as president of the USA. It's never explained how he became President, but unless Donald Trump was the only other candidate there's no way he could've gotten voted into the position. Especially considering he plays the same annoying character he always does of the dumb guy who does nothing but hang out with Adam Sandlers character.

None of the other characters are much better. Sandler has as much charisma as a plank of wood. Josh Gad's performance as the nerdy friend is annoying from the start. The only one who gets even a chuckle is Dinklage as the over the top douchey rival, but even that gets worn out quickly. Also just like all Sandler productions we get a lot of offensive stereotypes. This time the focus is on geek stereotypes, like gamers are antisocial weirdo's who have no lives and live in their mothers basement. Albeit this isn't the most offensive stereotype, but it's still insulting one of the film's biggest audiences.

Besides this there are other typical offensive representations we see in all Sandler movies, like women being nothing more than eye candy. In fact there are only two female characters in lead roles. The first is Michelle Monaghan who's in the film only to give Sandlers character somebody to flirt with. The other is Ashley Benson who plays one of the video game characters who comes to life, who not only doesn't get a single line of dialogue in the film but also ends up being a literal trophy for one of the characters.

Having some of gaming's most recognisable icons, you'd really think the film would actually do something good with them. But it doesn't. The gaming characters will just attack Sandler and co. only for the humans to fight back and that's it. It never tries to actually make any jokes with these characters, but instead does the same thing as a film like Disaster Movie where it will try to get a laugh by just naming something popular. The only video game icon they do anything else with is Q*bert, who is one of their trophies to help them. But all they have him do is typical annoying Sandler humour like watching Q*bert wet himself with pixels and some weak slapstick.

Although at least the gaming icons they use actually look good. It's not like the Mario Bro's Movie where Goomba's looked like a pear on the body of Frankenstein and instead the 3d CGI models maintain the charm of the original designs. But to me this makes the film even worse than typical Sandler comedies because it ends up feeling like such wasted potential. Had a better production been given the chance to use these characters, we might have got a charming homage to video games. But instead we got a typical Sandler comedy, just as unfunny as always but with a bigger effects budget.

For the most part, the movie was very boring. The dialog is simply uninspired and feels somewhat forced. The romance edge took up a lot of screen time and was not good at all. It should have been left out or less emphasized. The comedy was slapstick as always however it didnt connect very well in this movie. I did laugh about 3 or 4 times but it wasnt like some of the laughs I had in other comedies. The plot was non-nonsensical in that there was no adversary characterization except for a few words that Q-Bert made about his race. Anyway, its not the worst movie on earth, but it most certainly is below average by my book. I would skip it. Expand

How could anyone give this film above 3 is beyond me...
The film embodies the worst of Hollywood - lazy, despicable writing, annoying and insulting stereotypes, using nostalgia without any effort, no smart, witty humor, ripping off ideas from other, more talented people. All boils down to a usual shameless money milking experience. "Pixels" is an intellectually degrading film strip that was used to completely strangle celebration of 80's culture.
Adam Sandler's appalling attitude is not even infuriating me any more. It's just sad. And there's nothing worse than a sad clown.
Do this industry and movie goers a favor - pirate this. That's one of the rare times, when I admittedly endorse it. Pirate it, burn it to a lowest quality DVD you can find, spill it with he cheapest vodka you can find and burn it with the cheapest matches you can find. That's all it deserves. And nothing more.

And it doesn't even have a **** plot.

I would leave the review but this requires me to say more, so I'll tell you a few of the things that were messed up in the movie and those which were still decent (spoiler: it's just the CGI.)

The film is aimed at children, yet it will make references to 80s nostalgia, which kids nowadays have no **** clue about. On top of that, it has a really, really **** script. The damn movie took a dump on my head and left it to rot. You have completely underused stars with screen time given to Adam-****- Sandler as much as possible. There are constant mindless innuendos, sexist dialogues, and even **** Q*Bert seems embarrassed to act alongside Sandler.

Do yourself a favour and don't watch it. Seriously.

If this movie was a video game, it would be E.T. for the Atari 2600. Thats right, this should cause the collapse of companies, the sacking of entire departments, and should be buried out of shame. Its that bad. I struggle to even call this a movie, because what it devolves into is one of two things: Adam Sandler staring at the screen blanking thinking its hilarious, and the "actors" pointing at things and going "Oh look, its (insert game character)! Remember that?" Literally the only thing that keeps this movie from somehow making it into the negatives is Peter Dinklage. I remember him being in this movie alone sold me on the idea. Boy was that a mistake. Him being the standout actor is about as impressive as beating six year olds at chess. My recommendation? Stay as far away from this movie as possible. If you want to see colorful nostalgia of a more simple time of gaming, dont go see this movie. Dust off that ol' NES or SNES (or even resort to emulators if you have to) and experience the nostalgia as its suppose to felt. "Pixels" is just another Sandler fest with a bunch of arcade video games from the 80s. It's incredibly unfunny with some of the stupidest sub-plots in any Sandler movie in general. It's also got forced relationships between Adam Sandler and Michelle Monaghan and even Josh Gad and Ashley Benson. And Kevin James is just awful as the President. THE PRESIDENT! As far as the action sequences with the arcade games, they are fantastic to watch. The whole Pac-Man scene in particular is just outstanding to watch (if you ignore the idiotic comedy in between). But what's sad about "Pixels", a movie about arcade video games, is that they are barely in the movie. They probably only make up about 25% of the entire movie. The other 75% is focused on our terrible main characters, their childishly idiotic humor and their annoying sub-plots that have nothing to do with a movie about video games attacking earth. Overall, the fun action sequences are mostly pushed to the side thanks the movies terrible writing and crappy characters. I give "Pixels" a D-! The comedy is not really good at all. The special effects don’t work. It doesn’t really hit a market because it’s not Nerdy enough for Nerds, and the humour is way too juvenile so will only entertain fans of Adam Sandlers previous comedies or children and even then it will not appease Adam Sandler fans because the rating doesn’t allow them to do enough swearing or his usual lowest common denominator gags that somehow entertain people. The 3D effects mean that the 2D version which I saw didn’t really work which will limit it’s appeal on DVD and the cast is either really awful or too over qualified for this film and poorly directed. It’s just a mess on every level!! I didn’t find it very funny and I didn’t find it very thrilling. I was just bored by it and I was glad to go. It just doesn’t work on any level. I am probably going to forget about it as soon as I have finished this review. There are several continuity errors, plot holes and a couple of video game characters that were made after 1982 that turn up in the film un-explicably. They just didn’t care!! Expand

The whole film felt like an overblown idea given to the wrong production company. The original short film it was based off of was pretty damn good and I'd highly suggest watching that short video over this feature film.

Sandler was tasteless and lackluster as usual and I wouldn't want anyone wasting their money on watching this, rather to wait until it's on a streaming service (If it actually gets put on one outside of the USA).

It's near enough impossible for me to recall anything to do with the plot because it felt so poorly patched together that students that I've met before could have easily written better, and it's a damn shame that greatly talented writers are writing scripts that aren't going anywhere, but just because Sandler can bump his name and money behind a project means that major studios will automatically be more interested in backing it for either production or distribution.

There's a reason why they say the film market is dying and it's because they're too much deflated rubbish like 'Pixels' being green-lit, whilst there's an over saturation of individuals and smaller companies all trying to push to be near the top (for whatever reason: monetary etc)

Don't bother with anything Happy Madison produced anymore, just avoid it from now on because you'll simply be wasting your money. I learnt that after Master of Disguise...

Another lame movie starring Adam Sandler that looks different from the outside of what he normally does but the jokes, crudeness, and laziness are still present. Pixels stars actors that desperately needed a paycheck and it showed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. During this movie, I was like "Wow, how many culture references they make in this piece of garbage. And not even one hit the ground correctly". For real, "Pixels" is another flaming pile of **** coming out of an awful studio that I didn't wanna see in theaters. Not because I'm not a fan of the arcade games that this thing references, not because it's got Adam Sandler, not even because the latter and the terrible Kevin James team up. But because it's so **** obvious from the trailer that this film fails with its jokes. That PACMAN scene with his owner was so freaking annoying. "Oh please someone annihilate this stupid thing!". Whatever the writer was smoking when he was writing that particular bit remains a mystery.

As if it wasn't enough, we've got Adam Sandler, who is much the proof that Hollywood can no longer make use of the actor well. Game of Thrones' Peter Dinklage is in this too, and he's not even remotely funny. Michelle Monaghan and Josh Gad are also part of the group and together they fight against an alien invasion, that doesn't take too long to end. That's what happens when you mix all of this bland, uninteresting characters into one big, badly paced Sony's misfire.

Sure the concept of it is original, albeit pretty simple. I chuckled at least three times, and legitimately laughed 1 time during "Pixels". In a 100-minute movie! You know, I laughed more often with the "Super Hero: The Movie" and "Transformers: Age of Extinction" than I did with this movie. "Spy" was a great comedy movie, released this year, and each minute of it had 1 or two gags. It kinda feels strange to see Melissa McCarthy kick Sandler's ass, doesn't it?

Admittedly, the visual flair paid off, and I'm sure 3D lovers had their moment with this movie back in July, but I'm tired of praising this kind of movies for their technical goodie, and ignore all the tiresome aspects of it. I heard someone say that the pacing was solid in "Pixels". I think that the pacing in "Pixels" was off. There was no momentum, each scene was either Sandler flirting with his compatriots or fighting CGI videogame creatures, and all of them (the scenes) had no tension (YES, comedies do have tension as well, writer and people who somehow liked this film). I thought there was going to be a final battle against the "brain" of the attacks, but the finale underwhelmed it all. They just called it a truce with the villains and the movie ended. Like, why the f*ck would you attack a planet and give up after getting Donkey Kong's ass beated by a group of nerds (no offense to geeks or anyone)? It makes no sense. Frankly, I can't write a generic and vague analysis of the film without spoiling it at the same time.

Beyond unoriginal satire (which this movie has), there was little sense of villain overt carrying this movie forward. Meanwhile, a potentially wasted premise took a backseat to terrible acting and haphazard pacing.

Final Score: 3/10

Have you ever watched a movie just to make fun of it, and when you actually see the film it's ten times worse than you anticipated? That's "Pixels" in a nutshell.

Pixels is about an evil alien race who comes into contact with humanities' old arcade games (think pacman, galaga, donkey kong) and decide, quite randomly, to challenge humanity to a "game" of winner take all, real life video game warfare. This ridiculous enough plot leads humanity to find the three guys who can actually save the world -- some 1982 video game champions. The main one is played by Adam Sandler. So, it's a classic "lovable loser saves the world" story, right? Wrong, wrong, wrong.
This is because Adam Sandler's character is NOT loveable. He's a forty something year old Geek Squad type, who, despite his poor place in life, can't help but tastelessly insult everyone he ever meets, ever. Insults he flings include calling a guy with slicked hair "zack efron," an old guy "old timer," a guy with glasses "hairy potter," his save the world teammates are "creeps," "losers," weirdos," and his WAY-too- attractive-for-him love interest? Well, she's a hysterical nutbag **** who just needs to shut up and kiss him, of course.
And that brings me to the treatment of women in this film, one of the worst you'll ever see in a movie made after 1971. Women are trophies for the men in "Pixels," (one sexy-fied video game character LITERALLY transforms into a "trophy" for Josh Gad's character.) All the "attached" women are far too attractive for the men (Michelle Monoghan is way out of Sandler's leage, as is Jane Krakowski to Kevin James, as is Ashley Benson to Josh Gad, as is Serena Williams to Peter Dinklage (another REWARD woman.))
Sandler mumbles his way through this horrible plot with tired jokes and a script that must ALWAYS give him the last laugh (If self deprecation is the touchstone of charming, then Sandler is that guest at your dinner party who just won't leave.) The last laugh isn't with Sandler, though, it's on Sandler. Pixels is a sexist, boring, poorly written joke of a movie.

Pacing: yawn
Acting: cheezy

Cinematography: uncreative

Don't really no what else to say; it has been a long time since I have almost quit watching a movie. I knew it was going to be awful (that's why I watched it, RIP), but for it to be even worse is insane. I can't get over how disturbing the ending was. There were so many moments where it was clear it was supposed to be funny, but ended up making me literally physically cringe. If you appreciate films in the slightest, don't give up the almost two hours of your life. I feel like I need to clean myself.

The classics, as an adult Sam (played by Sandler) likes to constantly say. So good is young Sam that he enters a video game championship where he eventually loses to the obnoxious & annoying kid, Eddie at the game Donkey Kong.

Footage of the event is put in a time capsule & blasted into outer space in the hope of one day making contact with another life-form. Fast-forward to modern times (can you see where this is going?) & an adult Sam is a down on his luck installer of home-theatre equipment. Adam Sandler playing a mild-mannered, down on his luck character. What a surprise. I’m pretty sure that this is just Adam Sandler, he’s not acting, it’s just him.

Anyway he meets Violet, a soon to be divorcee & behaves incredibly inappropriately towards her yet she somehow finds him charming. I kid you not, his behaviour here would have him sacked so quickly yet she thinks he is adorable…at least until he goes to kiss her.

She knocks him back & they spend the rest of the movie pretending they don’t like each other even though all Adam Sandler movies end up with him getting the girl.

Elsewhere a military base is suddenly attacked by aliens that turn things into pixels when destroyed. This causes the white house to panic & the president calls his special advisor. Can you guess who it is?

That’s right! Sam Brenner is friends with the president played by Kevin James who is the fourth worst thing in this movie. On his way to the White House who should he run into along the way? Violet of course who happens to work at the White House. What a happy coincidence.

After seeing the footage Sam deduces that the aliens found the time capsule & saw it as a declaration of war having watched the video game footage. They challenge Earth to a battle split over three rounds…should we lose they will destroy us completely.

So guess whose job it is to save the day? Sam, of course whose knowledge of video games will help the army in the upcoming battles. All while acting with as much charm as a headless cockroach.

Sam can’t do this alone though & after being surprised by an old friend, Ludlow (Josh Gad) he recruits him to help along the way. Ladies & gentlemen, Ludlow is the second worst thing in this movie. I’ve wanted him dead from the moment he opened his mouth & his obsession with a female video game character goes so over the top by the end that it ends up being spectacularly creepy. Don’t believe me? I’ll sum it up with this unfortunate spoiler:

Ludlow will end up **** Q*bert & having weird Q*bert children with it.

I am not joking.

…but the crew still isn’t complete. They need the best of the best so realise they have to call upon the services of Eddie played by Peter Dinklage, the worst thing in this movie by a country mile. His acting is sub-par with dialogue that is supposed to reflect his 80’s younger self but just comes across sounding utterly pathetic coming out of a grown man’s mouth.

The big reveal is that he cheated during the Donkey Kong challenge, something that would have been impossible to do at the time & has a redemption arc that you won’t care about in the slightest. Throw in an unfunny & sexist angle about his obsession with Serena Williams & Martha Stewart & you’ve got one of the worst written characters I’ve ever seen. Maybe that’s why Dinklage plays it so badly…but that would be giving him an easy ride, he’s terrible & it’s as simple as that.

So with the crew assembled it’s up to them to take the fight to the aliens across battles based on Centipede, Pac-Man & Donkey Kong.

Along the way all the characters will bond & learn deep meaningful lessons about themselves resulting in an ending where everyone is better for the events that took place. Or they could just fill it with awful jokes, insultingly bad plot devices & lazy references to the ‘golden’ age of video games.

Everything that involves acting is a chore to get through, you’re just desperately hoping that you will get to the next action sequence before your brain starts leaking out of your ears.

Unfortunately, most of these moments are a massive let down too. It seems as though skill with arcade controls also makes Sam & Ludlow experts with guns (guns made for fighting pixel aliens, mind you) as the military screw up fighting Centipede so the duo have to take over. The Pac-Man battle is the most exciting of the bunch but seems nothing more than a commercial for the cars they drive (coloured to look like the ghosts from the game – how clever!).

For me the worst thing about the entire movie is it’s clichéd, out-dated jokes about video games & gamers as a whole. If there is a gamer out there who is pissed off after watching Ludlow make people believe we’re all basement dwelling masturbators again, I’d be surprised. Shockingly Sam doesn’t get modern gaming, something we get spelt out for us as he watches a kid play The Last of Us. Get ready for the chuckles guys & girls, because you know he’s going to tell a few jokes!

Nothing works in this film, the plot is obvious and boring, the characters are silly and stereotypical, Sandler who still plays the part of the eternal child no longer laugh now and hope that a film works only on the basis of '' nostalgia effect '' videogames is not enough, indeed for the whole film one has the impression of seeing an advertisement, and of being once again cheated by a devious marketing operation.
