Based on the life of the other A24 film in this series, "X" and how we reached the preceding movies chaos. This movie thrives in contrasting the subtle against the dramatic whether it's in retro-cinematography to evoke it's time period film standard. I loved the writing at some parts and found the set design and costumes to be the centerpiece of the film alongside Mia Goth's aw inspiring performance. Mia Goth is genuinely fantastic in this chilling tale Expand

Great performance by Mia Goth, most likely her best. Love the atmosphere, music and theme behind the film. This is an incredible prequel to X and does great to show a lot of Pearl's backstory. Must watch for horror fans..

Pearl is a stripped-down movie about a simple German farmgirl in rural USA losing her mind while her husband fights in WWI. While it’s clear that the filmmakers are saying lots of weighty things with their subject matter and imagery, the film itself is just enjoyable a straightforward psychodrama, with great performances and impeccable production design. A small town girl dreams of stardom while trapped in her secluded farmhouse caring for her infirm father and her strict German mother. And Goth is in practically every scene, as we watch her mentally deteriorate over the course of the movie. The style of the cinematography is like the bright colorful studio musicals of the 40s and 50s along with the credits that wipe on and off in the cursive font of old films. Mia Goth goes all in portraying the unbalanced young woman who spirals downward as the movie develops. And taking place during the influenza pandemic of 1918 adds to the isolation without hitting us over the head with modern analogies. Expand

Pearl serves as a semi-prequel to X but you do not really need to see the original film to watch this one. I found Pearl to be a quality horror movie that didn't quite live up to the original. Despite the films short runtime I often felt that some parts of the movie just seemed to drag on for far to long. There were also some weird plot points or details that may feel a bit off putting, but anyone who liked the previous movie will probably view these as quirky or charming - as I do. Pearl is a completely unnecessary prequel, but it is certainly not bad. If you're a fan of the original film or like slasher movies I do recommend seeing this flawed but enjoyable oddity of a prequel. Expand

Mia Goth is incredible. If this one doesn't quite match 'X' it at least lets Goth give an even zanier performance turned up to 11.

Como película en general es buena pero no sobresaliente, pero Mia Goth como Pearl fue un derroche de talento a gran escala, posiblemente una de las mejores o la mejor interpretación femenina de todo el pasado 2022.

If you go into this looking for a conventional horror slasher pic this isnt it. If you want to observe a nuanced, tragic descent into madness , a true "origin" story, then you are in the right spot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Director Ti West and Mia Goth collaborate in their second film of 2022 after "X" focusing on the origin of the old lady from that film, Pearl. Pearl presents herself as a Disney princess Belle as the film opens and has a dream of escaping her dreaded farm and pursuing fame and fortune, but has to overcome obstacles regardless of the strain.
The key to doing a "good" sequel is going further into detail on a character or his/her affiliation of a key element from its preceding chapter and that is exactly how this film's reel is conveyed.

I had fun with it the film just didn’t work for me. At the end of the credits, they showed a preview for this film and it looked so much better than X and I’m happy to report that that is the case here.

Pearl runs laps around X and serves as one of the better examples of prequel films that are better than the original. X served as an homage to slasher and horror films from the 70s but the homage didn’t fully land and just felt more like a standard horror film whereas this is an homage to the 20s and 30s decades of film and this worked a lot more here. Mia Goth gives a phenomenal and honestly terrifying performance here. There’s an uncut 8 minute long monologue near the end that is done incredibly well because of Goth’s performance. I hope that the Oscars consider nominating her this year for Best Actress but knowing the Oscars, that’s a long shot. The film has a great use of color. The colors throughout the entire film are very vibrant and aesthetically pleasing to the eye which I can’t really say about X. I know that’s what X was going for but it still felt bland there. The story serves as a very interesting origin to the character in X and it honestly made me like the character more than I did in X where I didn’t care for her at all. My one complaint which is more of a minor thing is that I wish the kills had been more creative and gruesome as they were much more tame here (bar one death) than they were in X. That’s more of a minor critique but it’s just something I wish was done better. If you liked or even if you weren’t a fan of X, then I would definitely check this out as it’s even better than X.

Mia Goth'a performance (pretty much carrying the movie) excellent. Such a sympathetic (to me at least) monster. Definitely worth a watch. Loved the gooofy retro fonts and title graphics.

I was shocked by her ability to complete such a lengthy monologue in one take. Her face and mannerisms convey so much emotion, you can literally see the energy shift moments before. It reminds me of a dark "Wizard of Oz," therefore, technicolor was definitely the way to go. One of the most underrated thrillers I have ever had the pleasure of watching. Expand

Mia Goth delivers another fantastic performance as the main Protagonist/Antagonist for this movie and guides the film with pure excellence. We take for granite what a true origin story is, and this film should be the gold standard when it comes to character development and retaining the beauty of this film throughout. For horror fans and gore hounds, it delivers some impactful kills on the way to the final scene, that will leave you both satisfied and uncomfortable. I cannot wait to see what Ti West and Mia Goth have in store for the future and hope more horror films live up to the standard they set. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What can i say whats not alreay told. Instant classic for sure. The way this movie was made, genius. The movie itself, horror art at its finest. Mia Goth is a BEAST in this movie. WOW. The atmosphere and picture is a step further than X. But this movie is so different. The setting, the characters and the plot itself is so unique, this is just incredible. Im so glad we still getting such OG horror movie but yet it is so fresh and new. And Maxxxine....well, im already a fan and i can not wait for whats coming. And i got to give it again to Mia Goth. This Lady put imo some of the best acting parts i ever saw. I can not believe how much passion and power this woman has and WOW, MY OH MY. She is soooo good. But the supporting characters did a fantastic job as well. The mom and her friend, very well.
This movie should not be underestimated. There is waay more behind this movie than the first eye sees. Thats fact. Ti West is a Machine.
