Mia Goth gave a very dedicated and unhinged performance. The rest of the setup and implementation is pretty dull, and it takes ages to get going.

This one's set in 1918 on a farm where Pearl lives with her extremely strict mother and ailing father. She fantasizes about becoming a dancer in Hollywood movies, but she turns violent as her dreams are slowly dashed. This film has many of the same attributes of X, primarily that it's more about an artistic approach than creating suspense. This time the homage is to the Golden Age of movies with a Technicolor shooting style and a continuous underscore to underlay the melodrama. The setting during the Spanish Flu epidemic obviously echoes our recent pandemic. In the title role, Goth goes all out to the point of being obnoxiously unbalanced. The director must be entranced by her charms because he gives her one very long closeup confession and a ridiculously over-the-top grin behind the credits. West seems to enjoy his cinematic tributes, but while they may be a stylistic curiosity, they aren't remotely suspenseful and even the murders are rather tame. Expand

Because Pearl and Howard are the killer old couple in the movie X. The place is the same. Even the crocodile is the same. In this movie, we watch how Pearl goes crazy. The same actress plays the girl who looks like herself in the movie X. The movie is reminiscent of old productions. The time is World War I. Pearl's husband enlisted in the military. Her father is completely paralyzed and her mother reflects all her rebellion on her daughter. The girl has only one dream. To be a dancer. But her mother certainly won't support it either. The tension that was not felt in the first movie is present in this movie. For Pearl, the cinematographer draws the road. Saying, "Maybe you'll act in movies like this".

There are scenes of sexuality and nudity in the movie.

Not very good. The story line is just not that interesting. Mia plays a great slightly crazy person, but nothing much to say about anything else.

I don't know how much this would work without Mia Goth's excellent performance. There's some interesting cinematography and direction, narratively I was not enraptured by it, but enough so that it was intriguing.

Yes, she has a problem, but so what? Beyond her illusions and her rage that turns her into a killer, Pearl doesn't really explore anything else.
Clearly she's is a performer who's desperate to be seen, but her best performance is not the one she wants to show the world, but the one she hides under the façade of what she passes as normal.
Her grimace at the end is the crack in her mask, it's her final performance and it is one that she clearly can no longer sustain.

Pearl works within the realm of possibilities because one way or another I can't say it's a bad film, but part of its weakness lies in the fact that it's an unnecessary prequel. Entertaining of course, but nothing seen here brings anything that matters to X and nothing about X brings anything to this film. They are different entities and understandably so, but as an overall experience, I enjoyed X more than this film.

Now we'll have to see what they'll do with MaXXXine.

West and Goth do a good job of creating a really vile psychotic lead character that is truly unhinged, but without any likable characters or anything to offset the uneasiness it's just boring. There's very little suspense until right at the very end which apart from an earlier dream sequence is the only interesting scene here. This feels very much rushed together and underdeveloped, which is unsurprising given the fact that it's clearly just a self-indulgent cash-in riding on the success of X which was a far superior film. Mia Goth kept up the energy that the titles promised, but overall, the plot wasn't so engaging. I saw what was coming a mile away, but it was Goth, the period detail, and the old Hollywood, Wizard of Oz style that kept me watching. Just seemed like there was something missing and I can't put my finger on it. Expand

I didn’t like X but found this a tad better cuz it has some actual character development. The kills are solid, the colors are poppin.

(Mauro Lanari)
Ti West does not have sufficient philosophical competence to analyze comparatively cosmic evil and human ethical wickedness: the scenes of botanical and biological decomposition have nothing to share with the ravings for frustrated ambitions, nor the pandemics with world wars. And he is in very vast company together with the now countless directors who slip from the phenomenology of the negative to the omission of denouncing its disvalue: with the blessing of Scorsese or Schrader, today the negative is described and told with smug indulgence. I would add a miscasting error comparable to that made by Kubrick in "The Shining": if the protagonists already have a mad face of their own, there is no narrative development and one could stop at their first frame, Nicholson and Duvall like Goth.
