Mia Goth gave a very dedicated and unhinged performance. The rest of the setup and implementation is pretty dull, and it takes ages to get going.

This one's set in 1918 on a farm where Pearl lives with her extremely strict mother and ailing father. She fantasizes about becoming a dancer in Hollywood movies, but she turns violent as her dreams are slowly dashed. This film has many of the same attributes of X, primarily that it's more about an artistic approach than creating suspense. This time the homage is to the Golden Age of movies with a Technicolor shooting style and a continuous underscore to underlay the melodrama. The setting during the Spanish Flu epidemic obviously echoes our recent pandemic. In the title role, Goth goes all out to the point of being obnoxiously unbalanced. The director must be entranced by her charms because he gives her one very long closeup confession and a ridiculously over-the-top grin behind the credits. West seems to enjoy his cinematic tributes, but while they may be a stylistic curiosity, they aren't remotely suspenseful and even the murders are rather tame. Expand

Because Pearl and Howard are the killer old couple in the movie X. The place is the same. Even the crocodile is the same. In this movie, we watch how Pearl goes crazy. The same actress plays the girl who looks like herself in the movie X. The movie is reminiscent of old productions. The time is World War I. Pearl's husband enlisted in the military. Her father is completely paralyzed and her mother reflects all her rebellion on her daughter. The girl has only one dream. To be a dancer. But her mother certainly won't support it either. The tension that was not felt in the first movie is present in this movie. For Pearl, the cinematographer draws the road. Saying, "Maybe you'll act in movies like this".

There are scenes of sexuality and nudity in the movie.

I don't know how much this would work without Mia Goth's excellent performance. There's some interesting cinematography and direction, narratively I was not enraptured by it, but enough so that it was intriguing.

Great performance by Mia Goth, most likely her best. Love the atmosphere, music and theme behind the film. This is an incredible prequel to X and does great to show a lot of Pearl's backstory. Must watch for horror fans..

For those who don't recall my review on 'X' earlier this year, IThis film serves as a prequel to the film 'X' that was released earlier this year and depicts how the murderous, elderly Pearl (Mia Goth) lost her mind back in the late 1910s. For those who don't recall my review on 'X' earlier this year, I thought the film was terrible and riddled with slasher cliches galore, so I was less than thrilled when it was announced that director Ti West and Goth reteamed almost immediately after wrapping filming on 'X' to secretly shoot this prequel film, but curiosity got the better of me nevertheless. And I can honestly say that Goth's tour de force performance is easily the film's biggest (and only) highlight. This one was a lot more of a slow burn than 'X' and took its time building up to the kills, but even when they do happen, it's just the same old thing. Generic slasher kills with nothing fun or unique about any of it. Not even depicting the film in the style of an old 20s era film made it any more interesting or appealing. So overall, this one's strictly for fans of 'X' only and offers a stellar performance from Goth, but that's about it. Expand

Yes, she has a problem, but so what? Beyond her illusions and her rage that turns her into a killer, Pearl doesn't really explore anything else.
Clearly she's is a performer who's desperate to be seen, but her best performance is not the one she wants to show the world, but the one she hides under the façade of what she passes as normal.
Her grimace at the end is the crack in her mask, it's her final performance and it is one that she clearly can no longer sustain.

Pearl works within the realm of possibilities because one way or another I can't say it's a bad film, but part of its weakness lies in the fact that it's an unnecessary prequel. Entertaining of course, but nothing seen here brings anything that matters to X and nothing about X brings anything to this film. They are different entities and understandably so, but as an overall experience, I enjoyed X more than this film.

Now we'll have to see what they'll do with MaXXXine.

A small town girl dreams of stardom while trapped in her secluded farmhouse caring for her infirm father and her strict German mother. And Goth is in practically every scene, as we watch her mentally deteriorate over the course of the movie. The style of the cinematography is like the bright colorful studio musicals of the 40s and 50s along with the credits that wipe on and off in the cursive font of old films. Mia Goth goes all in portraying the unbalanced young woman who spirals downward as the movie develops. And taking place during the influenza pandemic of 1918 adds to the isolation without hitting us over the head with modern analogies. Expand

Pearl serves as a semi-prequel to X but you do not really need to see the original film to watch this one. I found Pearl to be a quality horror movie that didn't quite live up to the original. Despite the films short runtime I often felt that some parts of the movie just seemed to drag on for far to long. There were also some weird plot points or details that may feel a bit off putting, but anyone who liked the previous movie will probably view these as quirky or charming - as I do. Pearl is a completely unnecessary prequel, but it is certainly not bad. If you're a fan of the original film or like slasher movies I do recommend seeing this flawed but enjoyable oddity of a prequel. Expand

West and Goth do a good job of creating a really vile psychotic lead character that is truly unhinged, but without any likable characters or anything to offset the uneasiness it's just boring. There's very little suspense until right at the very end which apart from an earlier dream sequence is the only interesting scene here. This feels very much rushed together and underdeveloped, which is unsurprising given the fact that it's clearly just a self-indulgent cash-in riding on the success of X which was a far superior film. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pearl is basically a movie about how burdensome people with disabilities are to their family members, which is sad, because so much of what made X so fun is the fact that at its core it was about the extraordinary lengths we go to accommodate the people we love.

After the initial excitement of learning that Ti West had filmed not one, but two movies on location, I began reading articles about Pearl that made me wary of what was to come. One stood out in the way it described how Pearl corrupted and spoiled all the things that made X original and fun. It’s not every day that someone tells you that the sequel actively undermines the source material, so I went in with low expectations.

It’s disappointing how much of Pearl is about the fantasy of killing your disabled spouse or parent. I can’t help but think it would’ve been better if there’d be one less member of Pearl’s family in the first place, if the film would’ve been a lot more manageable. Using Pearl’s dad as a physical prop for the first half of the film is lazy and boring. There’s no sense of empowerment for the audience to plan its own escape, and on the other end, the father’s status as an object of pity and sadness is equally dumb. Here’s hoping that Ti West spends the rest of his days editing the six other films he shot on location there simultaneously and Mia Goth finds a project worthier of her extraordinary talents. Saw Sam Levinson’s name on the executive producer list and cannot imagine what he was asked to comment on for this movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Director Ti West and Mia Goth collaborate in their second film of 2022 after "X" focusing on the origin of the old lady from that film, Pearl. Pearl presents herself as a Disney princess Belle as the film opens and has a dream of escaping her dreaded farm and pursuing fame and fortune, but has to overcome obstacles regardless of the strain.
The key to doing a "good" sequel is going further into detail on a character or his/her affiliation of a key element from its preceding chapter and that is exactly how this film's reel is conveyed.

And forgettable, even more boring and forgettable than the first film. Barely anything happens, it took me two attempts to finish it. It’s all character led which is fine and I like the character of Pearl but there is literally no story or action to support the characters. The charismatic and interesting lead character carries the movie except, unlike the first movie, the supporting characters do not have equal acting ability or memorability of Mia. Because of this, it became the Mia show, possibly even a vanity project for her. At least the first film had Jenna Ortega supporting along with some other great actors. But I haven’t reached the worst bit yet, it is the tedious ego-driven monologue, it is so so terrible, it goes on for so long and is so utterly boring. We are just watching Mia’s ego. Why do they think this is what people want to watch or do they want to prove they can do a really long take for no reason. Ugh hate it. Try sitting through it without looking at your phone. The long take is over five and a half minutes, the scene itself is nearly 15 minutes. I hate to say it but I think that this is the film that Ti West gave up entertaining and made films he wants to make. Probably the same for Mia but I haven’t followed her career to realistically make a fair assessment on that. The split-screen montage is annoying. They fail to depict the filmmaking style of the time that it’s set, unlike the first film. There are a lot of continuity errors and I never normally notice them. I absolutely hated the ending. I liked the dance number. Overall it is best described as pretentious rubbish. On the plus side, the technical aspects are really good, it looks and sounds nice. Expand

I had fun with it the film just didn’t work for me. At the end of the credits, they showed a preview for this film and it looked so much better than X and I’m happy to report that that is the case here.

Pearl runs laps around X and serves as one of the better examples of prequel films that are better than the original. X served as an homage to slasher and horror films from the 70s but the homage didn’t fully land and just felt more like a standard horror film whereas this is an homage to the 20s and 30s decades of film and this worked a lot more here. Mia Goth gives a phenomenal and honestly terrifying performance here. There’s an uncut 8 minute long monologue near the end that is done incredibly well because of Goth’s performance. I hope that the Oscars consider nominating her this year for Best Actress but knowing the Oscars, that’s a long shot. The film has a great use of color. The colors throughout the entire film are very vibrant and aesthetically pleasing to the eye which I can’t really say about X. I know that’s what X was going for but it still felt bland there. The story serves as a very interesting origin to the character in X and it honestly made me like the character more than I did in X where I didn’t care for her at all. My one complaint which is more of a minor thing is that I wish the kills had been more creative and gruesome as they were much more tame here (bar one death) than they were in X. That’s more of a minor critique but it’s just something I wish was done better. If you liked or even if you weren’t a fan of X, then I would definitely check this out as it’s even better than X.

Ti West does not have sufficient philosophical competence to analyze comparatively cosmic evil and human ethical wickedness: the scenes of botanical and biological decomposition have nothing to share with the ravings for frustrated ambitions, nor the pandemics with world wars. And he is in very vast company together with the now countless directors who slip from the phenomenology of the negative to the omission of denouncing its disvalue: with the blessing of Scorsese or Schrader, today the negative is described and told with smug indulgence. I would add a miscasting error comparable to that made by Kubrick in "The Shining": if the protagonists already have a mad face of their own, there is no narrative development and one could stop at their first frame, Nicholson and Duvall like Goth.

This movie should not be underestimated. There is waay more behind this movie than the first eye sees. Thats fact. Ti West is a Machine.

This was so much better than X in pretty much every aspect. The parody elements actually feel like they were utilized properly and Mia Goth was amazing.
