This will certainly crack my year-end Top 10 list, and it will likely be in the top half. TheThis will certainly crack my year-end Top 10 list, and it will likely be in the top half. I don’t remember the last time I laughed that hard (frankly, often in spots when I was the only one laughing… which is all the better) in a film. The story is excellent…vintage QT. But it’s truly Brad Pitt’s film. I mean, he should just sign over his movie check to the director for making him look this good. Those lines, those action sequences, the dog? Amazing. Don’t want to spoil anything – just see this one. It delivers. Expand

I laughed VERY hard on many occasions in this movie, and there are plenty of thrills. Most importantly, Leo and Brad are just incredible in their roles. The direction and writing are pitch perfect, but it wouldn’t have been the same work without the simple brilliance of its lead actors. I also appreciate Quentin’s willingness to deviate from history when it makes sense. I should also make mention of the always excellent Margaret Qualley (from “The Leftovers”) – she has really good chemistry with Pitt, and she brings the two storylines together. In this era of bullsh*t comic book franchises, it’s so refreshing to get an original, unique film from a singular talent. When will Hollywood have the onions to take risks like this again? I won’t be holding my breath. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think this is a great QT Film. A different genre than he's done previously (3 Crime, 2 Western, 1 WWII, 2 revenge Kung Fu) This is just a Story Driven Drama. Always strong characters aret in his stories and these are even more so. THe whole flick delves deep into these 2 guys and it truly is, IMHO his best on that level. A fitting homage to a legend made so by tragedy (her widower's infamy not withstanding) But Sharon Tate deserved this. A true Fary Tail with a Fairy Tail ending and Brad briegly revisits and old part that fiorst made him famous, allbeit for a single line of dialogue, but it went a long way for me. An amazing movie I will pay to see again. Expand

Yes, it's based on true events, but don't be fooled. This is a movie with a whole lot more going on with it than simply retelling certain historical moments. More deliberately paced than most Tarantino flicks, "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" takes its sweet time building to its eventual climax. But, dear God, what a climax it is. An easy contender for one of the best scenes I've ever seen Tarantino pull off from script to screen (right beside the tavern scene from "Inglourious Basterds" and the pawnshop scene from "Pulp Fiction"), the finale expertly blends terror, dramatic irony, and comedy all into one incredible experience. I'm not sure I can say it's all entirely worth the near-three-hour running time, but once you see where and how everything falls into place, it gets pretty damn close. Expand

Leo's angsty but darkly comedic depiction of Rick Dalton is probably going to rank among his best performances. It's easily the best film of the summer, and I want to go see it again to see what things I missed or will view differently. This is a hypnotic, nostalgic, and surprisingly accurate love letter to the Golden Age of Hollywood. Setting the movie during the death of the Golden Age only heightens the themes presented by the script.

When speaking of scripts, I mean, this is a masterpiece. A lot of people have been saying this is Quentin Tarantino's take on The Big Lebowski, and in a sense, that's true. It's the story of a stuntman, a starlet, and a has-been, set against a backdrop of larger things, more complex things, such as the Vietnam War and the Manson Family. Really, the characters are self absorbed with their own trials and tribulations, and this film is a character study to it's core. The way the story uses the stages of a stuntman, starlet, and has-been to examine life as an artist is complex and compelling.

Visually, the movie looks beautiful. I was spoiled, as I saw a 70mm screening, but the way colors and light and texture interact is just mesmerizing. All in all, I have nothing other to say than Quentin Tarantino did it again. Watching movies made by a man who loves movies is such a treat. I can't wait to rewatch this one.

Tarantino's done it again with a highly entertaining movie.

Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood is a complete ode to sixties films and television, jammed full of nostalgia. The movie looks great, both colored and shot to evoke the era. Costume and setting is strongly nostalgic.

Yet again Tarantino shows a true mastery of film with inspired editing, music and camera work.

This is the closest the director has gotten to a pure comedy with some strongly crafted bits and dialogue. With his emphasis on more intense action-oriented films these past few years, it's nice to see him returning to a more let's-have-fun-with-this tone that he had in Pulp Fiction and his segment in the anthology film Four Rooms. (That short contribution is tragically underexposed. You should really see it if you get the chance.) As with most Tarantino films, he does a great job of catching you off-guard at moments with the plot.

Needless to say that Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt are great actors, but they really knock it of the park here with the former as a comically over-the-top insecure actor and the latter as his cool, confident stunt man/chauffer/go-for/friend.

As had been his habit for some of his films, Tarantino succeeds despite his more questionable impulses. This includes but is not limited to frequent use of the b-word in regard to Hispanic Americans, the controversial use of Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie), Jay Sebring (Emile Hirsch), the Manson family, and Roman Polanski (Rafal Zawierucha). (Yeah, Polanski isn't in this or say that much, and his infamous crime doesn't factor into this, but it's hard not to think about it when he's mentioned. It doesn't help that Tarantino has defended him in the past. Yeah, Tarantino recently apologized, but you can't help wondering if he was sincere or did it for self-preservation due to the MeToo movement.)

Running at two hours and forty-one minutes, the second act is longer than it needs to be. A lot of the Sharon Tate scenes don't really add anything and I kind of felt that the role was so light that it wasn't worth an actress of Robbie's caliber.

This movie is an open range for Tarantino to spread his knowledge of film and television history. Some of it is rather interesting, but there is just so much that it feels self-indulgent and awkward.

Yeah, if you're not a fan of Tarantino and thinks he goes too far, I don't think this'll change your mind. For everyone else: I personally think this is one of his top five pictures

I told myself I'd keep it brief on this one, but gosh there's just too much good things to say. For one, it's one of only two QT films (the other being Jackie Brown) that put an emphasis on compassion. As a whole, and within the relationships of characters. Especially that of the relationship between Leo and Brad. Pitt finding probably the most hand-in-glove character since Se7en. Great homage to QTs truest love, which is Hollywood, set against the backdrop of Cielo Drive circa 69. - We know how much Tarantino loves to break rules in the best way possible, and he does not fail again on this one. A great sub-tribute to Sharon Tate as well. And why does it seem that these Tarantino films are the only things that really work for Kurt Russell anymore. Either way, great ensemble cast, including Russell, great likenesses to all the old stars. This film is really one of a kind and atypical of Tarantino in the most heartwarming and memorable ways. If you're looking for Kill Bill Vol 1 or Deathproof, you may be knocking on the wrong door. This film has a big heart, even with the usual hyper-violent tendencies. With that said, ONE OF THE BEST OF THE YEAR, and possibly Tarantino's best. An magnum-opus, a love letter, a historical document. It serves so many things. Way to go QT! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tarentino masterfully takes back the 60s and defeats the Manson family by offering an alternate ending to that tragic night. It's a tour de triomphe both psychologically and symbolically. IMO, Tarentino's greatest work, it approaches epic proportions like great classic literature. Look for the plethora of references and allusions, the fantastic attention to detail (even the car radios are playing KHJ Los Angeles with the Real Don Steele on Boss radio)... Eye-popping visuals and incredible stellar performances from a star-studded cast. You can see my video review of this film on the Richard Vernadeau channel on YouTube. Expand

Stunning perfomances, striking plot and screenplay. This film is great ,not as Pulp Fiction ,but i think, that it`s stupid to compare these two films. So,reviews like Pulp Fiction was better must be deleted or not considered for movie rating. Expand

Yes and no.To appreciate all its pleasures--this is the rare film that should be seen more than once. Director Quentin Tarantino, the ultimate rule-breaker, is at it again in “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.” A kinder, gentler Tarantino? Yes and no. While the main arc of the film features two mellow buddies driving around Los Angeles, most of this bad-boy director’s trademark violence and revenge is left for the end.

The buddies are TV – and wannabe movie – actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double, Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). DiCaprio and Pitt together are as fine as you can imagine they would be. Pitt is surprisingly willing to play second-fiddle (or so it seems) to DiCaprio.

Good as it is, that buddy bit, male bonding and all, is secondary to the film’s themes. One is the built-in anxiety of the B actor, or of anyone who feels his or her career may be heading south (does that include Tarantino?). Another is the role of the Charles Manson murders in the American psyche. Stitching these two ideas together is another demonstration of Tarantino’s talent.

The heart of the film’s plot is cross-cutting between Dalton in his film-within-a-film; Sharon Tate in the audience of a Westwood theater, watching herself in “The Wrecking Ball,” with Dean Martin; and Booth’s surreal experience at the Spahn Ranch where the Manson cult figures are chillingly menacing (Margaret Qualley [as enticing jail-bait], Lena Dunham and Dakota Fanning play three of the “Manson girls” – and watch for Bruce Dern as ranch owner George Spahn). It takes time for this intersection to develop, and when it does, it’s powerful. The date on the screen is August 8, 1969.

“Once Upon a Time …” is also an ode to Los Angeles, albeit a very different one from 2016’s “La La Land.” There are no loving long-shots of LA, but many close-in, insider references – even to Tarantino’s own 35 mm theater, now known as “The New Beverly,” described here as a porn theater (and perhaps it was in the 1960s). The Spahn Ranch, a movie setting and ranch, where the Manson gang hangs out, was real, as was the movie Tate watches on her last day on earth.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is filled with great performances, great dialogue and humor and great directing. This is a really entertaining movie. It's so fun to watch and mostly thanks to the writing and performances. One of its weakest aspects are the characters. Margot Robbie's character, for example, was really weak and underdeveloped, despite being featured in all the promotional material and posters. The rest of the characters, with a few exceptions, were basically the same. The pacing is alright, it never feels too fast nor too slow, it was okay. The cinematography is really good. Technically speaking, this movie was great. Easily one of the best movies of the year and I highly recommend it. Expand

The friendship between the two leadMaybe it was the nostalgic chill vibe, but my only regret about this movie was that it wasn’t longer. I could watch Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) & Cliff Booth (Pitt) navigate 1960s Hollywood all day long. The friendship between the two lead characters, and Dalton’s coping with the unknown limbo and stage of his career, was truly enjoyable to watch. Now I was born in ‘79, so didn’t live in that era, but man did it feel like they hit a homerun on the authenticity and personality of it.

The movie portrays Sharon Tate with a sweetness and genuine optimism on her future, with the success she’d worked towards coming to fruition. It felt like through Margot Robbie’s nuanced performance we know Sharon Tate a bit more than previously (despite outside sociopolitical criticisms to the character’s lack of dialogue). And say what you will about your opinion on Tarantino’s relationship with women, but if anything, this movie avenges Tate’s murder in a way, and pays homage to her life and career.

There was also an element of old vs. young, and while it was maybe unfair that the youth were represented by the Manson kids, boy did their attitude look familiar.

The pacing and tone might not be for everyone, and it may veer away from people’s expectations of a Tarantino film, but for me this was my most enjoyed movie in a while, and overall favorite of Tarantino’s. For me it was a 10, but it’s probably a true 8, and any score below a 6 is dishonest and personal.

Obviously going in I knew that this movie would be divisive, considering the subject matters of the film. I knew that fans were going to have a tough time with this one. One of the main criticisms for this film is that it has no plot. I strongly disagree. QT's intentions here are to show a historical portrayal of Hollywood and the 60s. The film uses Dalton's arch to exemplify that. The film is very similar to Pulp Fiction in how it's constructed. The two leads are grerat, but for me, It's one of DiCaprio's best roles ever. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OUATIH is just not for everyone. Going into the movie I had no idea what it was about, ultimately hoping QT was going to rewrite history, and he does, and I didn't see it coming -- not in that violent a fashion. We all know how one night's circumstances can change the lives of many, and this did. The Country was already divided with hippies, the war, etc. I remember this well and appreciated it because I'm familiar with the history of the times. I think if someone of a different age/historical memory may now be aware of the Manson murders, you just won't get it. QT gave the killers -- instead of Sharon Tate & friends, horrific violent deaths -- a reversal of misfortune. I found the film extremely moving, oddly enough (unkown at the time) seeing in on 8/8, same date as the murders. It's by far the best movie he's done, and it hit home that once upon a time in hollywood some of this unfortunatlely happened, for real. Expand

I've been seeing people complaining about a thin plot or complaining about a very small involvement of Manson in the movie.
This movie has a great plot but if you go and watch this movie with just Manson murders around your mind, you are going to be disappointed.
This movie is not about Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring, and Charles Manson.
This movie is about Rick F*cking Dalton, Cliff Booth, Hollywood in 60s and hippies.
The plot is all about Rick and Cliff and everchanging Hollywood and struggles to keep put in Hollywood.
Questions about Margot's role in movies have risen a lot but this movie is still incomplete without her.
Her role is meant for the ending and not for the rest of the movie.
Again!! This movie is not about Manson Murders. So please get over it and enjoy a beautiful depiction of the Hollywood in 60s.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Once Upon a Time is top form Tarantino. Still in our opening weekend, I’ll put up the big spoiler warning for this one right now so that we can talk more openly about the film after the jump. There was some controversy about whether showing his film at Cannes would ruin the twist for future movie goers, which apparently led Friend to investigate and make the friendship-ending decision to share his newfound spoiler with Wife and me before leaving for his European vacation. Since then, we’ve been picking up the pieces and trying not to think too hard about what circle of hell he’s destined for. But if you’re reading this far down, you are aware that we’re looking at an alternate history story in a similar vein to Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds, but also strangely enough with an indie film, Yesterday, currently enjoying some love.

The film is structured neatly into two parts with a decisive and unexpected time break. Tarantino is enamored with recreating genre television of the 1960s, whether it’s the cowboy Westerns that are Rick Dalton’s main fare or cheesy celebrity cameo commercials, FBI action adventures, or World War II nostalgia. Tarantino’s talent for blurring the lines between the real and the cinematic is at work, ambient music gives unexpected flavor to some of the most tense scenes of both halves of the film.

Little details like the length of Cliff’s drive to his trailer in the sub-suburbs of LA or the little moment of Cliff’s polite decline to pick up the hitchhiking hippies on their second meeting do wonders in fleshing out a friendship with weight and deep loyalty. Both Cliff and Rick are given the requisite nice guy scene with a young child or a cute animal in order to solidify their status as top notch goodies. Likewise, Tarantino’s villains are given a long runway from which to take off: they are equal parts alluring, enigmatic, grotesque, clownish, and damaged. On that last note, Once Upon a Time is stuffed with veiled critiques of Hollywood, wrestling with the unpleasantness of historical facts coupled with contemporary morality.

Tarantino feels to me like someone who has escaped for the most part the baggage of past associations of Harvey Weinstein despite some potential landmines, like the pressure Uma Thurman felt to do dangerous stunts on his set while being manhandled by a powerful executive producer. Thurman’s daughter, Maya Hawke continues a storied partnership between the director and the Thurman into a new generation and seems to validate Tarantino’s character. Tarantino’s other films have always struck me as interesting because of their tendency to elevate strong, fully-considered female protagonists and antagonists. Once Upon a Time has lots of roles for actresses in the springs, summers, and autumns of their careers. Even if the film is a bit of a bromance, it finds ways to tell other stories in the process: Sharon Tate’s storyline is obviously given a lot of attention and Tarantino deals with blending footage from her work with Margot Robbie’s smart, quirky, and apt depiction.

Dana Stevens over at Slate has taken a stab at trying to draw some comparisons to Tarantino’s previous work in a glowing and funny review, but I think I’ll need a second viewing before I have more decisive opinions.

UPDATE (Aug 5): I’ve been reading a lot more about OUATIH and ended up seeing it again by myself on Friday after starting a new job last week. Joelle Monique and Sam Adams have dueling essays about the gendered subjectivity of Tarantinian violence that’ll keep your mind going for a bit. Monique convinced me that I would absolutely hate Jackie Brown and then when I offhandedly mentioned the article and that film as the epitome of Tarantino’s callous fridging of female characters, a friend of mine wrinkled his brow and said it was a classic, which made me think I better go and see it for myself. THR had two takes that I noticed: Richard Newby did a nice close read of the film and its influences and Ciara Wardlow kind of split the difference between Monique and Adams in the feminist debate while placing the film in the context of the amazing trailers that preceded the movie by women directors and directors of color (“Harriet, Jojo Rabbit, Queen & Slim, and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood“). To that list, I add the ones that rounded out my second viewing: Knives Out, King’s Man, and Charlie’s Angels’ reboot. Alison Willmore is doing God’s work at Buzzfeed with a diachronic look at women in Tarantino films.

This is one of Quentin Tarantino's best films. He captures the essence of the 60s so beautifully and mixes humor, sweetness, and violence so effortlessly. Best movie of 2019. More detailed review coming soon. By far, Tarantino's best film. I think this may be my favorite Leo film. Cliff Booth and Brandy ftw

This is a great movie, which at the same time allows you to enjoy every leisurely scene and does not get bored. Each scene of this film makes you feel the Hollywood era of the late sixties. Thank you Quentin for the excellent 3 hours
