HerIf you’re a Bill Murray fan, the latest film written/directed by Sofia Coppola will make you happy. Otherwise, not so much. Rashida Jones plays a New York mom who begins to suspect that her work-obsessed hubby (Marlon Wayans) is cheating. Her father (Murray) plants the seeds of suspicion and helps her discover the truth. The story and interactions are mildly interesting, even though there’s little modification in the pace or energy. The performances are fine, but it’s mostly Murphy’s showcase. He plays very much to type as a charming, eccentric, off-center womanizer. I’ve never been a big admirer of his style, so there wasn’t much else to recommend this most pedestrian of Coppola’s films. I can't say that Sofia Coppola is a bad filmmaker, but I must admit that after three years, her new bet is something that feels too passive for its own good. This movie is basically a sitcom, and sadly, more is expected from Bill Murray than from Coppola herself or Rashida Jones.

And it's that basically once you do the final sum, the only reason why this very rudimentary story receives more attention than it really deserves, is due to the protagonists and the director and when all three of them are only playing in their automatic mode, you can't help but feel disenchanted.

Competent enough to pass the time. Notably forgettable for the careers of everyone involved.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

The story is too simple, and therefore too shallow. The only reason that I have completely finished this film is Bill Murray. Of course he's good again, but that's actually too little.

In what possible list of definitions can "On the Rocks" be labelled a "comedy"? To be clear, I prefer a subtle bit of sophisticated humour to the turd-tossing slapsticks that dominate modern movies. To be clear, I prefer a subtle bit of sophisticated humour to the turd-tossing slapsticks that dominate modern movies. But this movie wasn't funny. A meandering sort of sitcom plot (again, lacking "com") they stretched and padded out from 25 minutes to 96. Most of the reviews that praise the film seem to be more in love with the concept and idea of Bill Murray than actually watching the show and seeing what he actually does, which is pretty much a mellow, aged, by-the-numbers effort. It is simply a snooze of a movie, without highs or lows, laughs or tears. Expand
