One, and perhaps the, best animated movie I've seen this year. Certain the best that wasn't about a superhero. My only regret was not being able to see this in a theater. For me it is one of the best of this year 2023, being a person who knows about the themes of the film and who unfortunately suffers, it is a good film to reflect on and hang out. What a tragic and beautiful film this turned out to be! My only complaint is that some scenes are a bit too hyper-anarchic for my personal tastes, but everything else is rock solid, especially Nimona herself--literally one of the bestWhat a tragic and beautiful film this turned out to be! While other big animated studios have taken small steps to address LGTBQ topics, Annapurna Pictures takes a giant leap with a marvelous inclusivity story that will become a queer classic. Nimona and Ballister's ordeal represents the struggle of an entire community being bullied or pointed at all the time; their frustration and hiding reflect the failures of a system that has taught us since we were little that marginalizing or making fun of others because of what they are is ok. This is the kind of movie that kids out there need to be watching; a beautiful way of showing them that they're not monsters because of not being like others. I will be mad if this doesn't get an Oscar nomination next year.… Expand

Quite the enjoyable experience, fun to watch. The animation is fantastic, specially everything involving Nimona, which is a character you just cant help but to love- The voices are good too and the story, while simple in some ways, has enoughQuite the enjoyable experience, fun to watch. The humor is also a surprising highlight, as I was dreading that it would be full on childish and dumb, but it has a surprising edge to it at times that I very much welcomed.

First off, *I* loved this movie, but it’s not for everyone, so before watching it determine if it’s a good fit for you. Eg. Mischievous girl/shapeshifter, gay men who hold hands and kiss briefly (nothing overly sexual at all), censoredFirst off, *I* loved this movie, but it’s not for everyone, so before watching it determine if it’s a good fit for you. Eg. Mischievous girl/shapeshifter, gay men who hold hands and kiss briefly (nothing overly sexual at all), censored swearing, metaphors for being, idk, queer? Look, if you’re not comfortable with that stuff you won’t want to watch this, but for most people it won’t be an issue, and most of the movie doesn’t focus on these things anyway. A lot of the movie consists of silly, lighthearted jokes or comical violence, all centered around a plot where someone killed a royal, framed the knight, and then this outcast shapeshifter finally found someone she can relate to (not a spoiler, this was in the trailer). The girl’s too eager to cause violence and the knight needs to constantly reel (probably a metaphor for society telling queer people they’re being to “loud”), but he’s just trying to help and they care about one another. It’ a bit lowbrow at times, but the movie knows this, the point is there’s a deeper message and they (the crew making the movie) are having fun with it, so try and relax and you’ll probably have a great time. The animation style isn’t always notch, shadows are a bit inconsistent scene to scene, but I’ve seen this style before done cheaply, and this wasn’t bad, this seemed to be a product of love and it’s totally ok. Got unexpectedly teary eyed near the end, but that’s spoiler territory so I won’t say anything. All-in-all I’m very glad I watched this movie and would recommend people Consider watching it. Figure out if it’s something you think you’d enjoy and go from there. If you’re uncomfortable with gay representation, questioning tradition, questioning patriotism, comical violence, etc, then simply pass on this one. (Again, I loved it, big thanks to those who made it!)… Expand

I absolutely loved this movie. As a "film" it is very enjoyable. It does feel a little rushed, and another 20 mins would have done the film a world of good, but considering this movie was apparently resurrected from the Disney graveyard, it'sI absolutely loved this movie. So many people will talk about the "important message" of the movie, which is increadibly important and more or less true. But don't be fooled thinking this movie is simply about "value messaging". The movie is super fun, and my daughter and I enjoyed it immensely. I will also so say this is the first animated movie I have watched that treated a gay character/couple like a straight character or couple. There is absolutely nothing heavy handed or self-aware. Just two completely normal people doing completely normal things. Which is the way it should be.

A Netflix tem se destacado nas animações bem mais do que em filmes considerados mais "adultos". Se ano passado tivemos produções como "Apollo 11 e 1/2" e "A fera do mar", novamente a produtora mantem a qualidade principalmente pelo roteiro.A Netflix tem se destacado nas animações bem mais do que em filmes considerados mais "adultos". Se ano passado tivemos produções como "Apollo 11 e 1/2" e "A fera do mar", novamente a produtora mantem a qualidade principalmente pelo roteiro.
Confesso que achei o visual apenas ok, está bonito em sua maior parte do tempo, com tonalidades eficientes (por exemplo, o reino bem clean, os flashbacks mais escurecidos, as cores e traços diferentes da Nimona), mas por vezes lembra cenas de videogames como os jogos do Zelda. Não chega a ser um demérito, já que Zelda é uma linda produção.
Mas seu maior destaque, além dos personagens principais muito bem construídos e a química entre eles, vai mesmo para o roteiro, incrivelmente bem trabalhado (apesar de alguns furos e concessões, como facilidade de acesso a certos lugares). Nimona é uma garota, mas também assume diversos corpos e seres, e acaba se aproximando do cavaleiro plebeu aspirante a entrar pra guarda real, que fora objeto de uma armação justamente no dia em que se apresentara à rainha. A cereja do bolo é que ele: [spoiler] assume um romance gay com outro guarda, mas dado os acontecimentos teve que fugir, então seu enamorado fica na encruzilhada entre caçar o seu amor ou confiar nele para enxergar que, na verdade, trata-se de uma vítima. [/spoiler] É um filme que envolve muitas camadas, desde questionarmos o poder das instituições a tradições ou de questionar a ascensão de um plebeu à corte. As camadas sociais e os estigmas impostos pela sociedade vão ditando as visões que aquele ambiente tem da corte e dos guardas, construindo narrativas distorcidas do real e muito próximas do que o capitalismo prega.
E, claro, o papel de Nimona no filme acaba também dialogando com essa espécie de "outsider", termo usado por Norbert Elias para dar conta de grupos excluídos socialmente, mas não apenas transformados em marginais, mas postos num local inferior para mover a engrenagem do sistema.
É justamente esse o ponto chave e mais interessante do filme, perceber que as narrativas que inferiorizam o outro são funcionais para manter o sistema em pé, ou seja, não é apenas excluir o outro, é inferiorizá-lo para ressaltar a estrutura social da elite. Veja, por exemplo, as falas da diretora que assumira o posto da rainha, sempre dotadas de um ar de superioridade que se antagoniza ao outro inferior, utilizando-se de certo pânico social contra a classe menos favorecida para manter seu status. Qualquer semelhança com o discurso fascista não é mera coincidência.
Aliás, quando o pensamento mais progressista chama a atenção para a diferença de classes ou de identidades, o que se quer mostrar é que essas diferenças são usadas pelos conservadores de modo a segregar pessoas, e o que se quer é justamente acabar com os preconceitos, que, afinal, isolam as pessoas. É tocante diversos momentos chaves do filme em que Nimona transparece a sua solidão e tristeza imposta por esse mundo de julgamentos. Logo, ao contrário da direita conservadora que fala que o discurso da diversidade separa as pessoas, é justamente ao contrário, o discurso pela diversidade tenta uní-las, pois a realidade das sociedades já cumpre esse papel de exclusão, as instituições, por motivos históricos e culturais, já criaram seus monstros e o puseram em caixinhas inferiores, como dito, os outsiders são funcionais para manter o sistema. A diversidade parte das diferenças para se chegar a uma sociedade mais justa, não é ficando cego à realidade e tratando todos de forma igual que resolveremos os problemas, pois essa realidade nos espanca todos os dias, ela própria cria a exclusão. Cabe superá-la.
Assim, o monstro figurativo de Nimona é o indivíduo que difere do padrão, liberando seu pior lado, vítima de uma sociedade segregadora. Todos nós temos potencial de sermos bons ou ruins, e de fato a sociedade assim nos julga, cria muralhas e discursos "fóbicos". É preciso romper as barreiras, e tentar enxergar no outro a sua melhor versão, visando um bem estar social. Tudo isso pode ser a mais pura ilusão, talvez estejamos caminhando muito devagar em algo que poderia ser mais simples: olhar as diferenças identitárias com ternura, pois o outro em nada interfere naquilo que eu sou, cada um tem o direito de ser feliz e ser quem é.
Um filmaço que merece ser visto à luz de suas mensagens libertadoras e críticas, com cenas de ação, de romance, de humor, mas principalmente, cenas com muito conteúdo reflexivo em um mundo onde, infelizmente, ainda persistem muitos julgamentos.… Expand

Excelente pelicula.
Este largometraje animado deberia servir como ejemplo de como hacer buena inclusión.
La mayoria de directores que quieren hacer ese tipos de peliculas a futuro... tendran que tomar como base a esta obra.

What, exactly, is a monster? The plot intelligently and entertainingly addresses what it is to accept others and oneself. One of the best animated proposals of the year and, almost certainly, one of Uncle Walt's worst nightmares.

Easily one of the best movies of 2023 so far. When I opened the Netflix App was first time I saw any promotional material, but the cover of the movie hyped me up, so I decided to give it a watch. However, I was positively surprised as the movie was much cooler than I anticipated.
The characters are dynamic, well-written, and fun to follow. All of the characters really grew on me. The movie is always beautifully animated. The worldbuilding is original. And it also happens to have some great messages about betrayal, trusting people, and finding people who will love you for who you are, and the main couple was a positive surprise as well! Overall, it was a great watch and it's surely going to put a smile on my face every time I get reminded of it!… Expand

It's allwys nice to see some good story. I don't like the animation style, but the story telling is so amazing. Animation itself is pretty good. Sometimes its chaotic and sometimes it flips your view on the society and i love it.

Nimona is the next in animated movies that are better than whatever Disney and Pixar put out in 2023. Funny enough this was in production at Disney's Blue Sky Studio but got pushback because it was too gay for them. Funny enough this was in production at Disney's Blue Sky Studio but got pushback because it was too gay for them. It is their loss because Nimona is a magnificent movie. It has a very unique and lively animation. A great subversion of the fairy tale fantasy genre with its futuristic and fantasy blended world. Wonderful set of characters with a stand-out vocal performance from Chloe Grace Moretz as the titular character. An awesome score with well-thought-out uses of pop and rock songs. To top it off, an emotionally weighted story with a lot of depth. The only criticism I have is that the laughs can feel a bit like the forced humour you see in a lot of movies and they are very hit-or-miss.

Nonetheless, I wish to see more of these unique types of animation films in the future!… Expand
