The biggest downside of this movie is that there is no real narrative on screen, it is all just vague symbolism. Whereas films, such as The Shining or Mulholland Drive have much more meaning and symbolic stories, while still telling it's own narrative. Mother!'s writing is definitely a bit empty, craving for an actual story to be told. Expand

If you are expecting a horror with spooks and scares then this is not the right movie for you. This movie focuses on the symbolic meaning of religion, the nurturing of planet Earth, and how we as human beings coexist with nature. This movie is about the reflections of human creation, destruction, and the continuity of life. To give a brief summary of the characters and the plot of this film, we are given two main characters in this story, Mother and Him. Mother, obviously being a representation of mother Earth, is played by Jennifer Lawrence who gives an amazing performance. Her character focuses on the issue of trust. While everything she has done in her life has been about creating and prolonging life, she is the authority and the core player in this movie. Him, on the other hand, is a representation of God himself. He is worshipped by those below him and he is the influence of other people’s lives. Everyone will follow him and even go to certain extents to show their worthiness to him as a deity. As God, he wants to provide and care to everyone but finds no issue that there is ever a problem. While mother and Him play a significant role in the movie, this movie is a story of how actions have consequences and how purity can be corrupted. This movie is full of symbolic meaning and is a deep story of how we should not take advantage of what we have now. I give this movie a 4 out of 5. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The most stressful experience I have watching a movie. But the message wasn't confusing at all, the story (the implicit one) was there, and u can get it without the necessity of seeing the film again (that's something pretty good). I really think it was gonna be a paradox at the end like Donnie Darko, but it ends up being just a cycle. I like the film, and it brings to life my worst nightmare involving people. Expand

There are some truly vile images, extremely disturbing scenes, a very convoluted plot that weaves both a Biblical allegory with the history of time. This film is very hard to watch and very challenging. It is definitely not for everyone. The film is replete with philosophy, theology with a smattering of Quantum physics. But a movie like that is not going to be entertaining, though there are some odd and humorous moments in the film. This is not a fun journey, but it is intellectually stimulating. One theory of time, from Hawking, is that the Universe constantly expands up to the point when it is at its apex, then collapses back into a particle of infinite mass and density, which in turn leads to the Big Bang and the expansion starts all over again. Take that theory and combine it with the Bible (and numerous biblical references) and current times that seem like we may be close to the apocalypse and there you have this film. Not for everyone. Really. Expand

Is mother a symbol of something greater? There will be many interpretations of this film's allegorical intent, but it does feature Lawrence in almost every shot. She lives in a secluded country home with her troubled poet/husband (Javier Bardem), but unexpected visitors are only the first twist in this increasingly bizarre and disconcerting trip (and I mean that in the LSD sense). Although I'm sure director Darren Aronofsky meant the occurrences to become increasingly unsettling, after a while the absurdity of the situations became laughable (to me, at least). Despite the elusiveness of a clear meaning, it's an unusual and intriguing cinematic experience. Expand

Worst. Houseguests. EVER.

I spent the majority of the movie in a state of perpetual confusion. It's a challenging piece of cinema and in more ways than one. The content can be downright horrifying and it in no way holds your hand when trying to decipher what all of it means. It proves that Darren Aronofsky is not just a filmmaker, but an artist. As problematic as mother! can be, I appreciate him for creating something so provocative.

The reason the film is so divisive is because it can be interpreted in a myriad of different ways. Everything is very symbolic. It's also an extremely harsh movie. It's graphic content is both the intelligent, mature work of a tortured soul and the profane temper tantrum of a petulant child. Pretentious, puerile, and poignant.

By the time the movie ended I had already changed my interpretation of it several times before forming my own conclusion. Of course I did end up looking up what the film is actually supposed to be about (I just had to know) and found out I was totally wrong. I had picked up on some of the symbolism, but walked away with something totally different for the final message. I don't feel discouraged by this though. I like that it spoke to me in it's own way. That's what makes it good. You may not enjoy mother!. Could end up walking away thinking it's nothing more than a bunch of pretentious, vulgar trash. But at least it will make you feel something and in a way that only art can.

Probably the hardest movie I had to review so far.
I am going to be straightforward, if you are not a real a cinematography fan you are not going to enjoy this movie in any way.
I read some reviews, watched the trailer once, and knew before jumping into this Darren Aronofsky movie that I was in for a 2 hour brain candy experience.
Most of the plot points and characters can be interpreted, not at first, but after re-thinking about the movie (for about an hour). There are still some mysteries that will probably never have a sure answer ever (probably only the producer knows the truth).
After watching this movie I had two ideas: the God and Mother Earth co-existence along with the appearance of Old Testament characters such as Adam, Eve, Cain and Abel, after which moving on the New Testament, sacrifice, chaotic events, war, poverty, destruction (humanities downfall) and finally rebirth (a life cycle event).
On the other hand there was a message (in my opinion) about the impossible balance between an artists' life and family which quickly falls into abyss (wanting them both). The continuous struggle of wanting to have everything and never being able to be pleased with what you have and the fact that it is never enough (for most celebrities).
All in all, a deep masterpiece that has its very strong cast and character development while also making the viewers think: WTF!? which is fair enough, but you knew what you were expecting before watching this movie.

You wanted to pull certain characters out by the hair just seeing what kind of things Lawrence's character had to experience. Not going to lie, I had to look up what some of the things represented. I wish that I had a better understanding of the bible before I came in because the story is very biblical. What this movie is about is another matter. To me it was about art, on the one hand, and fame on the other (I thought about the Beatles and even Princess Diana, although she was more a personality that attracted people than an artist). The artist needs to create, and is flattered when he finds individuals who love his creations. His family can easily rank second to the adulation he gets. Unfortunately, especially when an artist is very popular and/or famous, worship can get out of hand because people are attracted to an artist’s work for all sorts of reasons that may or may not have to do with what the artist himself thinks he is saying. Dark undercurrents can be released as they are in this film. The ultimate question is whether a film like this belongs in a mass-market movie theater. I can see why it is not making much money since I doubt if the mass audience has any idea what I am talking about, especially since the mass audience’s heartless and crass adulation is what is being shown so vividly. Is it a film worth a rewatch or greater analysis? Probably not. The problem with the film is that once you attached significant bilbical motifs to it, the film especially in the final act falls flat and becomes nothing less than a metaphorical smorgasbord that doesn't necessarily tell you much except that Darren doesn't seem to like religion that awful not. That said, the first 2/3 thirds of the film work really well as this unsettling thriller with almost dream logic of a Lynchian film. I enjoyed these parts because as slow as it is, with a lack of much going on, the sense of uneasiness and mystery was an amazing mood. The general direction by Affronsky is second to none and is actually quite interesting to watch. The acting is top notch with Lawrence and Barden delivering well time performances.

That said, the film kind of falls apart in the final third with an explosive finale that mirrors something of a dystopian nightmare and that I think is the thesis of the film which kind of negates all the beautiful setting of the beginning. That said its still a good film if you want to just watch something original, however, the metaphorical analogies are very on the nose and not worth further examination.

This movie was a crazy ride.
One thing that it is to be admired about it, is its guts and uniqueness in what it does. It takes you on a spin with various elements that just make you end up being like: What is going on in here?!
And yet it keeps you glued to the screen to find out what's going to happen next.
Great acting overall and the well the movie was shot really took your breath away because it gives you little to no space to breathe. That's something for many movie makers to learn.

The movie is a wide-open interpretation. There are many ways in which you can tackle this movie and experience it. One thing to mention is that this movie is NOT for everyone!
If you want to see something different, crazy and chill, then this one is for you but don't expect a specific something. I doubt you'll find it here.

To understand an allegory you may need a clue or several and depending on what you expect and what you may comprehend, that is perhaps the best way to enjoy this movie.

Mother! is a film that let's say it treats passively their viewers at first, because in one way or another you do not know what you're watching, but it's okay, that feeling of restlessness is precisely what the film aims to, because very soon, you and Mother - Jennifer Lawrence's character - will understand that you have no control whatsoever over what is about to happen

What follows is a disconcerting journey, full of discomfort and distrust, a journey that offers no answers but symbolism, yet of course, everything will make sense only if you are paying attention.
Is it worth the trouble? maybe not for everybody and I must emphasize that there is nothing wrong with that, many times I have met people who are upset when they should analyze a movie because they feel that the story and the director are treating them like idiots, but this is a provocative film, is not as shocking as some were saying, but the setting, the tone, the cinematography, all those things are focused on a frenetic and heavy pace that tries to overwhelm you from all sides.
The last half hour of the film is a frenzy of social criticism wrapped in religious tones and elements of horror, the idea is that you feel suffocated and undoubtedly the film succeeds at it.

Darren Aronofsky washes away his huge failure with Noah and returns to his roots of provocation, still unable to overcome his past, but undoubtedly, Mother! returns some status to his name.

Jennifer Lawrence manages to sustain the film with its protagonism and she delivers a good performance, although far from being memorable.
Javier Bardem is a solid cast partner, managing to print everything that the character requires and always attentive at each point.

Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer have a short but very relevant participation because it is they who reveal what is happening when you discover who they are, who their children are and why Bardem's character is so relevant to them.

In the end Mother! is an interesting message, no doubt each person will have their own interpretation even though it is understood that the message is about the uselessness of God and his failure to control his own creation, therefore his omnipotence is a failure. We see the damage made by man to mother earth and no matter how much we hate to see it that way, we are a disease for this world and the world is hitting us back as we are seeing it today. I believe in nature not in God, after all what it means to be God if all your wickedness is forgiven no matter how serious your crime is? and the crime committed here is the merciless attack on Mother.

Without a doubt you'll talk about it, regardless of whether you like it or not. Give it a chance.

"You never loved me. You only loved how I loved you." ---mother (Jennifer Lawrence) to Him (Javier Bardem)

Directed by Darren Aronofsky ("Black Swan" and "Requiem for a Dream") "mother!" is possibly the darkest, most disturbing movie I have ever seen.

It is absolutely one of the most affecting.

Reviews have been mixed, to put it nicely. But I think the theme of "mother!" terrifies some people so much that they choose to be perplexed by it rather than allow themselves to even think about what Aronofsky is suggesting.

My take on the film is that it is about God, humans, and our respective relationships with creation and the creative process.

Humans are trying to create Heaven on Earth, and God is....well....God created our ability to create. "mother!" is about the futility of OUR attempts.

It is about nihilism.

It is the abyss, looking back at us.

Congratulations to Darren Aronofsky: He got it on film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a relatively frenetic film, with lots of shaky camerawork, quite fast paced scenes of initially domesticity but then something goes wrong. Jennifer Lawrence I thought did quite well as the clearly anxious wife, very much sensing things are going to go badly wrong and having to deal with the situation she finds herself in. This is less of a jumpscare heavy sort of a horror film and more of a slightly spooky film with a heavy emphasis on symbols and how you interpret things. There is a fair bit of blood shown across some scenes, so be aware of that. There's also some hushed dialogue which was a bit hard to follow in full, which may frustrate some. I'd say its fairly atmospheric. The tone of voice of some of the male characters is definitely...frustrating and borderline creepy possibly. I imagine a lot of women could relate to the feeling of loss of control, loss of space and privacy that's portrayed in this film. Javier Bardem also gives a pretty decent performance in this claustrophobic film. It won't be a film that will appeal to all and I felt it seemed a bit ludicrous when pace wise it headed towards the last quarter or so but overall its relatively good for what it is, so I suppose I would recommend it, yes. A couple lives out in the country with nothing much around. She is much younger than her husband (Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem). They seem happy. He is a writer and she is busy renovating their huge, sprawling Victorian home. There are a few things that puzzle her, but for some reason, she seems to shrug them off. One day, a man knocks on their door. He is a fan of the writer and also a doctor (Ed Harris). Over his wife's objections, the husband invites the man in and then later invites him to stay. Without going into the details, things begin to go downhill from this one event. The director takes the idea of intrusions in a marriage and your life and takes them over the top and then way off the rails. This film is insane! After seeing it and not really having any sense of what was happening, I think I do now sort of understand what it was all about. While watching, you get caught up in the crazy and get carried away. Later, for me, it was easier to ruminate on what it all meant. Expand

Just looking at the direction he gave Black Swan and even this film you can tell. But he overshot here. When I watched Mother I couldn't look away, it was gripping, surreal and dreamlike, demented and glorious. But once the films climax happens it felt like id eaten a mouthful of sand. Theres no real substance to the film until you turn on your phone and look up the true meanings (NO SPOILERS). If they'd incorporated any of its true themes into the film I think this could have turned out a masterpiece. Overall Mother is a film that completely divides me but you must watch it yourself (even just for J-Laws performance) to decide if you are a lover or a hater. Expand

i would not think it's very bad as the acting compensated for the craziness and the mess has a lot of meaning to contemplate on. i thought it's more coherent than Tenet....
many things were thrown in including the sacrifice of the son? very disturbing but definitely the message got thro.
so many things comes to mind, rosemary baby, green zone war scene, pan's labyrinth....
have an open mind... not so bad.... so glad michelle is back as witches of eastwick... remember?

The symbolism of the film is fascinating... but I can't say that I realized it during the film, but only after reading the reviews. I would have seen the film differently if the symbolism had been more obvious.

Actors played very well.

Welp. There that was.

Now, let's get something clear here. If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's how the filmic medium remains one of the most effective conduits for artistic expression out there. And Paramount Pictures - God love em' - sure is fighting the good fight in trusting director Darren Aronofsky to fire on all creative cylinders with "mother!," a living testament to the fact that the "auteur" is still the most important figure in the American studio system. Is "mother!" a provocative and engaging film? Yes. Is "mother!' an intriguing theological allegory for Man's relationship with the Fates and Nature? Yes. Is "mother!" a film that I'll truly never forget? Yes. But, was "mother!" a film that I enjoyed watching overall. Nah, man. Not really. And that fact, in and of itself, is another thing I've learned over the years from not only the filmic medium, but from all artistic realms entirely. It's all subjective, man.

And, with that fact in mind, I remain true to my opinion for that which it simply is - just an opinion. I found the movie interesting and appalling at the same time. Both thematically on the nose and frustratingly oblique. Ugly at times and pretty during others. Intelligent and laughably stupid. So with these conflicting extremities in mind, I suppose it all equalizes out to the first word I uttered when leaving the theater. "Meh."

Unsettling events happen that keep the audience unnerved and worried for our main character. Just enough hints are put in to allow the audience to correctly guess the allegory that Aronofsky is going for. All this great craft gets lost though in the final 40 minutes or so in the movie. If the audience hadn't figured out what the movie is about yet, they are hit over the head with it over and over. This might be somewhat needed for Aronofsky to make his point, but it is very tiresome for the viewer and ultimately wasn't necessary beyond the first 15 minutes or so. This movie is worth seeing if you're a movie buff but I wouldn't recommend it for the average movie goer and I wouldn't say that this movie is a great film. It was interesting though.

Lastly, I don't understand why they copied Rosemary's Baby's movie poster. The two films have somewhat similar themes. Is Aronofsky paying homage to this film just like he paid homage to perfect blue by buying the right to the film and copying scenes, or is he doing something a little more shady?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mother! Is a movie that depends on some other knowledge on external things that it's not really explained in the movie. I wouldn't call this exactly a mind bending movie, but more of a metaphorical movie, they extended a lot of metaphors to the whole creation and religious aspect of it is shown very well in all this, but the biggest flaw with this is that you can't really appreciate this throughout the movie, because it doesn't really blow your mind, just confuses you. The experience throughout the movie isn't very entertaining, just really crazy and boring, with a bit of stale acting and a bit of pace mix up in the movie.

Jennifer Lawrence was a great addition to this, no way it's her best performance but for her standards i think it was very solid and passionate.

The ending is great and explains everything you should know, and kinda makes you think about the movie in a whole new perspective, but that's the problem, you can just follow everything after the ending, so the experience during the movie isn't very favorable

And it's really not a bad movie when you see it for the second time, now understanding its meaning. The thing is that, if you don't understand it right away, it will make you suffer. It will be a dreadful, chaotic experience that will make you furious.

When I saw it on theaters that's what I felt, then I googled it and after finally understanding, I saw it again and it was a very, VERY different experience. It's not for me to say what a movie can or can't be. All I can say is that I never want to see this kind of movie again. You either get it and have a wonderful time or doesn't get it and leaves angry and stressed. Getting it later won't help much, so you will only be satisfied after seeing it with your new knowledge. Getting this movie is not something obvious for many people, as it deals with a theme that it's only incorporated by some parts of society.

If you like this kind of win/lose risky experience, watch it. If not, don't. Even better: do it, but spoil yourself first. Not the ideal thing, but at least you won't risk feeling like my first time watching it.

For me, the second hour, which includes the orgy of random violence and senseless destruction, destroyed most of the things I liked about the whole first half.

Acting: Jennifer Lawrence is good, except her character doesn't have much to do or even an arc. She spends nearly the entire movie looking confused or disapproving. Javier Bardem is perfect for the role and shines in it, with his booming voice and appearance. Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer are also amazing. Overall the casting and acting is great, and everyone fits their roles perfectly.

Characters: Again, Lawrence's character doesn't have much of an arc, intentionally, I assume, but still, and spends the entirety of the movie asking questions and sounding worried and confused. Plot: I loved the first half of this movie. I love the kind of movies that keep you guessing and trying to figure everything out. Get Out and even It Comes at Night are good examples of this, both of which I also loved. The first hour makes you so tense, scared even, and creeped out, but in a good way. Every creak of the house, every time she is in the basement, it instills fear, even if nothing happens. I appreciated the camera angles, moving along with Lawrence to give it from her perspective, which made the house seem bigger and made you scared every time she even turned a corner, not sure what's behind it at times. But this does get repetitive throughout the movie, as it is mainly just a shot following her, a shot in front of her, and so forth. I would have appreciated more wider and further away shots of her, creating the feeling that something or someone is watching her, giving off even more creepiness. This first half of the movie was well-done, paced well, and tense, creepy, and mysterious. However, the second half ruined most of it for me. I walked into the theater expecting it to be violent from the start, as some critics have coined the movie "torture porn," so when the first hour rolled by and there was none, I was confused. But soon after, I saw what they meant. It is pure chaos, senseless violence that was hard to watch, and not in a good way. It was completely unbelievable, and I know that was intentional, but it took away from the surreal-yet-somewhat-real feel of the first half. It went completely bonkers and crazy, and just felt like I was watching Aronofsky string random violence and things together to make some kind of allegory. Which brings me to another point, the imagery. This is the first Aronofsky film I have seen, and it doesn't make me think he's a genius. Some say this movie is a movie you won't forget, and I won't forget it any time soon, but in a really bad way. I will remember this movie because of the shock-value feel over actual story-telling in the second half. I will remember it because of the senseless and random violence that ruined a movie I was enjoying. I remember a good movie, like Get Out, because of how good the story-telling, script, characters, and plot was, and I remember It Comes at Night because of the twist it put on horror movies and psychological dramas. Mother! isn't innovative just because it was a Biblical allegory, which it seems it is, because it has been done before, multiple times. Also, the twist at the end was predictable within the last 30 minutes or so, and seems smart at first, but doesn't really make sense when you think about it. It raises questions, but not good, thought-provoking questions like It Comes at Night, but rather ones that question what just happened, because it makes no sense. The story is obviously not grounded in reality, but when the entire first half of the movie can be seen as somewhat realistic at times and the second half completely ditches it, I don't know what to think of the twist. Also, I feel Aronofsky did this multiple times throughout. There were scenes and things in the first half that looked cool at the time, but when looking back on it served no purpose and was seemingly there just to look cool. I don't have a huge problem with that as long as it has at least some significance or isn't used countless times throughout the movie.

Violence: Over-the-top for no reason, crazy, random, and doesn't make for a good movie. I think Aronofsky needs to see a therapist.

Overall, Mother! started off well with a well-executed first hour that invoked fear from the lack of knowledge of the story and where it could go, but ended on a bad note with senseless, random violence that ruined my enjoyment. Every fragment of the 4, more a 4.5 in my head, was purely from the first hour. Don't take your grandma to see this movie.

However, I was left disappointed though but maybe that's because of my familiar taste in thriller's/horror's. But I am always keen to see something new. It was... different.. but it lacks a few things with plots and so on and so forth. It was frustrating and very hard to watch. Mixed emotions through out the movie, but damn do you go on a rollercoaster while watching it! i'm leaving it with a 4 because it was a decent watch but theres nothing incredibly good about it im afraid. Worth a watch or two, there wasn't enough foreshadowing in the film. They kind of dropped a few things here and there with no explanation and it's as though the audience is trying a bit to hard to put the pieces together and then your left with multiple questions and potential endings as was i. You don't get the purpose of the story till the very end except that it's a cycle which will go on forever.

I had no complaints about violence and some other uneasy scenes. I have seen worst violence than this one. The direction felt little bit weak. It was like direction asked them to do anything. The acting by the both leads were good but at some points you are unable to connect with them.

Everything was progressing well for the first half. I remember thinking to myself, actually, this isn't so bad. Then the entire story descended into complete and utter madness. It became a non-sensical, chaotic mess. People around me were laughing, and I couldn't criticise them for it! It's a real shame because the cast as a whole is quite good, although Jennifer Lawrence has the same gormless expression throughout. I think Aronofsky tried to be a little too intellectual with this. It felt very self-indulgent and egotistical as a piece of work. It's definitely unnerving but also frustrating and confusing which doesn't make it an easy watch by any means. At the same time, it's overwrought with religious allegory and moral overtones. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone except for sheer curiosity. If you're going to see it anyway, then I recommend waiting until you can do it at home so at least you can pause it, forward it or just stop when you've had enough. Very disappointing. Expand

Yes, it has shock value, and yes, it does have some moments of great, symbolic imagery, but ultimately this is a movie that does not have a plot, it wants to tell a story but does not care what the story is, it wants to cause shock, but does not try to do it by means of its ideas but by means of violence for violence's sake (and a big budget, and the heavy use of CGI). As such, this movie ultimately fails on all levels, except maybe trying to make a case about Aronofsky being a bold and imaginative person- which, in my opinion, is a question that should concern his friends and his agent, not the viewing public.
As far as I am concerned, there was no genius on display here. I saw pretentiousness, I saw lack of cohesion, and yes I saw some beautiful shots, which - however - relied mostly on CGI.
I consider this to be Aronofsky's weaker moment, a truly bad movie that does not know what it is and does not care to find out. Had this been an arthouse film with unknown actors and a 5k budget, I would recommend it for its bold style and genuinely scary moments, but primarily because this would be the movie of an unknown who is screaming for attention (look what imagery I created with the money I got by selling my car and an 8mm camera).
Aronofsky is not this position, however; nor are his star actors. As such, I think this movie is mostly the product of a narcissistic personality disorder and less of a work of art.

I even liked parts of "Requiem for a Dream" and "Black Swan." It is sad when you compare the likes of "Mother!" to these other films.

The only thing shocking about "Mother!" is how bland it is. You know when you get a joke but you still don't find it funny? Well, I understood the message and allegory of "Mother!" but didn't find it interesting or thought provoking in any way at all. The film is so bad that it doesn't even deserve to be called pretentious because that would imply an ounce of ambition or vision on the directors part. It doesn't help that "Mother!" has the subtlety of a ten ton hammer and doesn't even add an original spin on its retelling of the bible.

Some movies are too smart for their audiences and don't deserve the hatred they receive. "Mother!" is not one of them. It is the art-house equivalent of a Transformers film. It deserves to be hated and it deserves to fail. Only gets a 2/10 because I generally like the director.

There's mot much I can add to the other negative reviews here. I wish I had walked out but was curious to see just how bad it could get. In that respect I wasn't disappointed. Pretentious twaddle of the worst kind.

Despite several fine performances (particularly Michelle Pfeiffer) and an inventive production design, these assets can't save this morass of religious cliche mixed with contemporary social commentary. But that fact that this came out of an established individual means this is basically all he's got to give creatively. It's not just that the points he's trying to make aren't that interesting or impactful. Its couple with the fact that the movie just isn't filmed or edited all that well. There is no dynamic blocking and loads of sloppy post processing. The movie plays like a comic book and it is not a stylistic choice.

Jennifer Lawrence can't act.

Sure, it's provoking, and while it seems as if Aronofsky desperately wants to say something about love, religion and the strugle that comes with being an artist, all he succeeds in doing is making an allegory with nothing to say and no real story. The writing is so abysmal, that not a single line of dialogue felt genuine, even when delivered by great actors such as Javier Bardem and Ed Harris. At every chance the movie tries to shock you, but for me it never works since i can't relate to anything that's going on. With all that said, i would have been much more forgiving if the movie just looked great, but no. This movie looks terrible, with sloppy camera work, bad framing and truly disgusting CGI. I know Darren Aronofsky is a great director, he's made quality work in the past, and so has almost the whole cast, but this is one to skip. I guess it takes a truly great director to make a truly bad film. Expand

I really don't understand how people could like this movie: it is just a mess! It goes in all directions, it is like every time the writer has an idea he put it in the scenario.

So, ok maybe they are trying to give multiple messages, some may say that it is good because it is not like other hollywood movies but at the end, no message is really given and at the end of the film it is just pure confusion.

Very disappointing, just another intellectual/ego masturbation.

It uses people's fear of the unknown against them. The intruders have no logic or goal. They just come up with new ways to be terrible. What frustrated me about it were the numerous comparisons to different topics like the earth or the bible. Because even the writer had no definitive answer. Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer, this film isn’t worthy of the time it takes to write this review except that, by giving an honest summary of it, others will hopefully be dissuaded from going to see it and that I will consider my good deed for the week. It’s difficult to characterize this movie without using such adjectives as insane, unrealistic, absurd and mostly acts of exreme overkill and violence. Much like some modern art pieces, there are some misguided folks who may see allegories and analogies to life in this cinematic disaster but for this viewer, at least, I saw nothing more than ridiculous manifestations of bad writing and directing with supposed horror scenes so bad that, instead of being fear provoking, made them almost laughable. It would have been funnier had I not wasted an evening watching the movie instead of some bad television at home. I give this poorly executed effort by Mr. Aronofsky a one rating, and that goes solely to Ms. Lawrence’s efforts on the film’s behalf. Simply stated this is the “Mother” of bad movies” and deserves your firm boycott of this insult to the viewing audience. Expand

I say "art" because anyone that gives this a positive review sees it as such. While my favorite food is pizza, there is plenty of bad pizza in the world. This "art" is one of the worst of it's kind. If I wasn't so curious to see where this movie was going in the madness it presented over the length of film, then I would've left the theater early. I can only think of one movie that I wanted to leave the theater early more, and that was Eraserhead. If it wasn't for the sheer beauty of Jennifer Lawrence, I would give this movie a "0". I find it very hard to give anything a "0", so that is my excuse for this one. This is not a spoiler so much as a warning, the last 30 minutes of chaos is very hard to watch just to get to the ending. So beware of this if you are brave enough to see it because of all those positive reviews. If I can change one person's mind, then this review served it's purpose. Expand

YES...This one SUCKS the Big One! Is HIM some Demigod that controls everything? Does he have one "Mother" after another? I guess if you drop acid and watch the movie, you would understand the plot, from the Screen Play Writer who dropped acid, and wrote the script. What was good about the movie...lots of strange action that messes with you're mind. Expand

I fall into the latter camp, and only went to see the movie out of morbid curiosity to see what all the fuss is about. All I can say is I wish I hadn't bothered. The word 'pretentious' has been used a lot and it's fitting. If there's any justice, Aronofsky shouldn't be let near a movie set again. Expand

i think the only reason you didn't let yourself feel the way i did when i watched this film, or let yourself criticize it for a second, was because its a major film made by a major director and your mind unconsciously telling you that you don't know better than him.

Everything is pageant-y. The FX are B-movie-ish....maybe C. The conflict grows & grows to ridiculous levels like a Seth Rogan penis joke bit that just won't end. This movie could've actually been done well, but it takes more than EVERY SINGLE SHOT MUST BE PICTURESQUE, ARTSY & PRETENTIOUS AS IT FOLLOWS JENNIFER LAWRENCE'S FACE THROUGH THE HOUSE, which is just distracting.........room to room to porch to room to room (repeat).

1 bit of hope : Kristen Wigg finally enters! (Wait, what? Yes, I know, I know..) Her 30 seconds of lines, total, were of course great. But that hope is lost as the movie only takes a further nosedive into, seriously (I think), Tarantino-grind-core ridiculous grotesque territory (see: From Dusk Till Dawn)

The movie's concept could've been cool....but this wasn't......like at all.
