After his last stupidfest, i kinda hoped that his times of making one demented movie after the other are over, but he not only made another terrible one, he went full retard here. From the main premise of the movie down to the details where museum shuttle launches with only two main engines and SOLID ROCKET BOOSTER "loses thrust" mid flight, this is just one of these situations where you're losing IQ points just by watching the movie. This movie can make people even more stupid than they already are. Every single fan of space programs/astronomy should avoid this like a freakin' plague. It's so bad you can even laugh at it. You just feel enormous shame and cringe. Expand

I wanted to like this movie so much. Even when it becomes absurd, with the poorly implemented twist, you root for it. But ultimately this is a missed opportunity to make a really thought provoking classic. All the parts were there.

Moonfall is so derivative of his own works that it ends up being a boring film. You can't really go wrong with the casts, but by taking a serious tone, Moonfall fell flat on its face. Set pieces come and go with no fanfare. Plots and sequences are ripped off even from his previous works. The fact is that the blockbuster of the 90s that Emmerich was responsible for to some extent is out dated. Expand

It's up to 2 astronauts (Halle Berry & Patrick Wilson) to come to the rescue in space, along with a nerdy scientist (John Bradley who's supposed to provide the comic moments). All this time, their families on Earth are trying to outrun the disastrous calamaties that ensue. This sounds illogical, but given that director Roland Emmerich is a master of these sci-fi disasters, it's worth accepting the premise. Then, the situations begin to get silly, before it just breaks down to absurdity. By the end, the whole thing is ridiculous to the point of hilarity. The actors are doing their best, but the family connections are surface. The effects are big and impressive, but they can't distract from the ridiculousness of this whole mess. Expand

Unfortunate, because recycling 200 sheets of paper would have been a much greater contribution to humanity than this bloated dreck.

Every Roland Emerich picture reminds you of why you hated the last Roland Emerich picture, by amplifying all of his worst creative impulses, each on a grander scale than the last. Here’s the thing: he can no longer structure an entertaining script. He can’t write dialogue, he can’t create dimensional characters. What he can do, somehow, is get movies financed.

Independence Day, a fun, throw away film that I actually like, was and is his high point. Moonfall is dumb, depressing garbage.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The idea behind it (as a disaster movie) is good, but not even the CGI can save this. The disaster scenes are the worst as the water looks really bad. Also green screen is used everywhere, even inside the Griffith Observatory and some parts in LA that could easily be shot there. Acting is just average, which is a shame especially for Halle Berry. It's a much much lower-budget version of 2012 although with much more merchandising everywhere (Kaspersky, Lexus, etc.): much shorter build-up to the disaster scenes, much less people involved in the plot, etc. and full of scientific inconsistencies i.e. the space station is exactly at the same spot although the moon has drastically changed its orbit and the gravity around it??? Well by now you’ve heard about a very strong contender for worst film of 2022, I know it’s early in the year but it’s hard to imagine anything being quite as bad as Moonfall this year.

Shockingly I had a certain expectation from director Roland Emmerich, who gave us films like The Day After Tomorrow and Independence Day. They’re by no means masterpieces but they are entertaining disaster movies and The Day After Tomorrow is up there as one of my favourites. I’d argue that Moonfall is better than another failed disaster movie, Geostorm, although I guess that’s not saying much. While Geostorm lacks an actual geostorm, at least Moonfall delivers what it promises, a moon falling. Yes you heard that right, some mysterious black alien goo has knocked the moon from it’s orbit, sending it on a collision course which then causes absolute catastrophic scenes on earth. Extreme tidal waves, diminishing oxygen levels and anti gravity spots. So naturally it’s up to former astronaut Jo Fowler (Halle Berry), disgraced astronaut Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson), and the local conspiracy theorist KC Houseman (John Bradley) to save the day.

It’s been described as about five different disaster movies rolled into one and that’s very accurate. There’s one movie going on in space and about four others happening back on earth. Between the floods, water tornados, car chases and ordinary people bouncing around earth like they’re on the actual moon it’s hard to believe all of this madness is crammed into one movie. I can only hope Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson got paid enough for this rubbish. I don’t know how they made it through their scenes with a straight face. If there was ever a clear case of a “gimmie the paycheck” performances it’s these two. They’re better actors than this horrendous movie would have you believe. Moonfall is daft, you’ll feel idiotic watching it but I did laugh at some moments of sheer stupidity.

There’s definitely an audience for disaster movies and there’s also a slightly smaller audience for truly awful disaster movies. So when the terrible reviews for Moonfall started emerging it either caused you to rush to the cinema to see this car crash of a movie or stay well away. The question now remains, has Moonfall fallen into the “so bad it’s good” category? No, I’m sorry to say it hasn’t and unless you really have nothing else to do and want to have your brain switched off for a bit then I can’t recommend Moonfall. It’s dreadful from start to finish. There are better ways to spend your time and it just doesn’t have enough laughs to make up for how dull and stupid it is. Not recommended, avoid.

I wasn't expect anything from Roland Emmerich. I mean, who does that after all this time?
He's an extremely limited director and everyone knows it.

Moonfall is more of the same formula he's exploited in most of his films, with few exceptions like The Patriot, Anonymous and Stonewall.

It's the dumbest kind of high-budget entertainment possible. Nothing less, nothing more.

And his problem with other blockbuster franchises? Well, he had to advertise his movie.

Sure, there were bad acting, cheesy scenes and was perhaps 30 mins too long - but I thoroughly enjoyed the journey. If you can suspend your need to be rooted to realism and instead entertain an alternative reality offered by Roland Emmerich for 2 hours - I am convinced you would enjoy the movie. The plot is just wild and you will not see it coming : just the kind of escapism one looks for when you walk in the theatre. Sometimes you just want to check out of every day reality and sink into a viable alternative universe. This is that kind of movie. And it is a win for me. Expand

Conflict of interests disclosure ~ This reviewer has seen every Roland Emmerich movie and likes most of them.

The best balls-out sci-fi movie since the Chinese hit, Wandering Earth (2019) (Netflix, YouTube). Like Wandering Earth, Moonfall IS A MOVIE ABOUT IMAGINATION. If you dislike artful expressions of visual imagination, stay away and don't carp about the dialogue until you have written a better script and can show it to me. If you didn't like the last 2-3 Roland movies, this one has a much faster pacing. Everything's compressed into three weeks. The story has all the characters improvising again and again, giving the whole narrative a slightly manic improv-like tone. This be-fits a story racing thru the most OUT-SIZED ideas imaginable, one after the other, lickety-split.

With both Moonfall and Wandering Earth (a Chinese homage to Emmerich disaster movies) and James Bond Movies, you don't walk into the theater expecting much more than spectacle and excitement. It's pointless to take such fare too seriously. Exercises in imagination live or die on execution, not on how well they stand up to deconstruction by critics. This is a 100% sci-fi epic at the Marvel-level. It succeeds for the same reasons. When you congregate CGI and VFX directors from three or more of the best special effects houses in the world, an unintended beneficial side-effect occurs. You end up with an astonishing brain trust of experience and creative talent in the multiple technical directors working off each other. This creates an unofficial directorial team where new ideas are welcomed and can be integrated. The result? The script on-set keeps evolving and improving daily. In post, the final edit keeps evolving and improving, right up to the the zero hour before printing copies for theaters. Cheers to Variety reviewer, Pete Debruge for this snappy summary: "Hollywood’s leading disaster artist, Emmerich knows how to blow things up real good. ... in [his] latest eye-roller, “Moonfall,” the joke is pretty much flipped: Everybody’s favorite satellite is set to collide with Earth in, oh, a day or so. This is just enough time for two space jockeys to suit up, shuttle out and set things right."

Let’s face it, any movie that resurrects the Space Shuttle AND gives us graffiti on it, out-launching a giant tidal wave has GOT to have a place in any 80s and 90s heart! So: Big screen.

A bit messy, this.

'Moonfall' is actually good in areas that I was expecting it to be bad in and bad in areas I thought it might've been good in. I had caught one of the trailers - at the cinema for a different film - and didn't hold high hopes for it, especially with the 'Don't Look Up' similarity, though thought the humour/silliness might carry it over the line.

Yet, the humour is poor and it's in fact the more serious elements that come to the fore. I honestly enjoyed the sci-fi bits of it and the more dramatic stuff. The comedy is very lame, I don't think I even smirked once to be honest. They should've just played it totally straight, in my opinion anyway. The special effects, meanwhile, are a positive.

The cast, when not comedic, work fairly well together. Halle Berry, John Bradley - who may be at the front of the limp jokes but he as an actor is likeable enough that I didn't dislike him at all - and Patrick Wilson - who I always forget the name of, I was literally trying to recall him throughout the film and I still didn't crack it - are a solid trio when serious. The support cast, spearheaded by Michael Peña, are meh.

Unfortunately it's a 2½* rating from me. I do like disaster movies - '2012', Roland Emmerich's best, is great - but this one fell short; particularly towards the end. I wouldn't, personally, say it's as bad as that average rating chart suggests, but to each their own of course.

Unfortunately for this movie it simply doesn't land close to any of these. When you walk into Moonfall you will want to probably stand up and leave for the first hour... yes the character buildup and story was that bad. After the first half you immediately get roped back in because it seems like a switch was somehow turned in terms of which way Emmerich wanted to take the movie. This ending to the movie ironically saves this disaster film from being a disaster of a film. Definitely not the worst movie ive ever seen but not something I was thrilled to watch nor something I will ever watch again. Easily a 4/10. Expand

This wasn't it. It has taken it's place among my pantheon of bad sci-fi movies, and at this point, it is currently ranking as "the absolute worst" — and believe me, it has to be a real stinker to be even worse than many of the others. Ludicrous plot, straining credulity for even the most forgiving viewer, and pushing the "science" part of science-fiction so far past the boundaries as to be almost anti-science. Do I believe in the possibility of world-sized mega-structures powered by a dwarf star? Sure. Do I believe in the possibility of sentient AIs that evolve to the point of seeking to destroy their creators? Sure. But as presented in thi movie, I think it makes the concept of both of thoese extremely unplatable, and does them both an extreme disservice. The screenwriters should be laughed out of the guild. Kudos to the CGI. That was the only good thing in the film. Expand

There are many moments were you get a McGuffin to justify why someone is doing this. Even the big reveal is kind of a let down. That said the visual and sounds effects are really good. The music isn't very interesting. I give it 42%. If you want an apocalypse movie with absolutely no sens of logic, this might be for you. Scenes meant to be heartfelt feel forced and cheesy. Scenes that can only done in CGI are obviously on a paltry budget and green screens.

I watched this as I enjoy the "what if?" of disaster movies and that aspect of the movie is terrible with realism completely thrown out the window, amateur special effects, and plot holes big enough to drift a bus sideways through.

Acting is from stiff to passable with the main 3 roles being the only ones that seem to have actually read the script, with a tiny ray of hope in Donald Sutherland's cameo.

Pacing is a complete mess being one of biggest offenders having random things thrown at you left and right in nonsensical ways. This is one of the worst edited movies I've seen in a long time.

If it's free go ahead and watch it but curb your expectations of what should have been a spectacle if done by a real production company. To be fair I was expecting worse coming from Tencent AKA the CCP. Of course you only get to see the US getting destroyed while China's only role was offering help. :P
