I was not disappointed. The plot is full of intriguing twists that just grips you right from the beginning, and the characters are all fascinating.

The drawback is that many of the characters are could have been fleshed out a little bit more. Additionally, I feel that the climax of the movie was a bit rushed, and somewhat underwhelming. And yeah, there are certain bits of the movie that made absolutely no sense, but it is one of those story lines where making sense isn't really the point.

Overall, the movie was a fun experience and is worth watching with family and loved ones.

Admittedly, the pacing in the first hour needs a little quickening (which could have been accomplished with some astute editing) and the screenplay could stand a little tidying, but there's much to like here, especially in the areas in which the director traditionally excels. Have fun with this one, and don't forget to look closely at some of the details -- you just might be surprised at what you find. Expand

The story centers around a boy named Jake (Asa Butterfield), whose grandfather always told him these strange stories. The whole family thought he was a little off and no one put much stock in them, until one day his grandfather is attacked, and Jake sees things that he can't explain. Jake decides the only way to get the answers he seeks is to find out if the stories of Miss Peregrine and her school are real, so with his father's assistance, he travels to Wales to find them, and begins the adventure of a lifetime. Even without Tim Burton's unique twist and strange characters this story is extremely original and more than carries it's weight, but the visual elements certainly help, especially when it comes to bringing in the young audiences. As for the stars, Eva Green is your typical Tim Burton casting job, while she doesn't jump off the pages to the screen as Miss Peregrine, she does fit the role in the way Johnny Deep did in the Chocolate Factory or Michael Keaton did in Beetlejuice. She was an important part of the story, but she wasn't the whole story. The real star of the show to me was Asa Butterfield as Jake. His character does jump off the page directly to screen, as Butterfield gives one hell of a performance. Butterfield has been acting since the rip old age of nine, and almost every role he's had has been a leading role. There's a reason for that, and as with Hugo, The Boy In The Stripped Pajamas, and Ender's Game, he proves why yet again in this film. Miss Peregrine is a terrific book, that honestly shouldn't work well as a film, but when you add Tim Burton and his eccentricities, the experience of Samuel L. Jackson, & the raw talent of Asa Buttefield to the mix, you get a unique and special film, that while not the same as the book, it's just as good in a different kind of way. Expand

Fitting Tim Burton's narrative and visual style perfectly, this film tells a story of a world in which people with "peculiarities" exist. However, this world is under attack from "bad peculiars" who seek immortality. A pretty typical set-up masked by an unusual setting and unusual characters, the film still proves to be a unique treat. If nothing else, it is the most realistic portrayal of Florida ever put to film.

Focusing on Jake (Asa Butterfield), a seemingly ordinary kid who comes to learn his peculiarity, which he inherited from his grandfather Abe (Terence Stamp). As a child, Abe told Jake stories about Miss Peregrine (Eva Green) and all of the children under her care in a remote island in Wales. By the time he passes, it is time for Jake to take over protecting Miss Peregrine and the children with his unique and peculiar ability to see monsters. As they are invisible to everyone else, this skill is invaluable when defending the children from the "bad peculiars".

Though its general plot seems relatively new, it does nothing truly inventive with this set up. Good versus evil, boy meets girl, big fight at the end, conflict, conflict, and more conflict. Even its time loop element is hardly unique and the film more than likely violates every rule it sets forth regarding time loops, making one wonder why they even bothered in the first place. The beginning takes too long and there is a moment where Miss Peregrine is talking to Jake in the garden and I realized just how much the opening drags. The battle can be a little over-the-top and silly. The ending is rushed and wildly predictable, while adding unnecessary details. Asa Butterfield is quite bad in the lead role with some lines coming out worse than others. Getting words out of his mouth is like squeezing a nearly empty ketchup bottle, just trying to get that last drop out. In other words, it is like his mouth fights against the words.

All of that said, I quite enjoyed it. It is simply a wildly imperfect film. The final battle, though over-the-top, fits in with the wild narrative and the moral of the story here - bravery - is quite nicely handled. Even better, all of the peculiar children are utilized in the battle and before the film. I heard some criticism towards a lack of focus on many of the children and this is true, though everyone does get their moment in the spotlight. When you see what some of these kids can do, it also does prove to be a very nice surprise. This film also has a very intriguing world that is worthy of further exploration with a lot at play and, though unoriginal in how it uses its world, the world itself is incredibly original. Burton and writer Jane Goldman do a great job putting the world created by Ransom Riggs on film and instilling it with this weird, fun, and youthful energy. The concept of time loops is one that certainly demands further attention and the film does a good job at evoking a sense of mystery with everything it reveals to Jake and the audience about this world.

Even better than all of those positives, however, is the special effects. A true visual treat, though this one is far less grounded in plotting than Burton's past films, its visuals are still top-notch. The sequence from the trailer of the girl blowing air to remove water from a shipwreck is simply incredible, but really most of the special effects are terrific in this film. It really causes a true suspension of disbelief and creates a sense of wonder when the film shows what tricks it has hidden up its sleeves.

As a whole, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children has proven to be an incredibly divisive film. The critiques are not wrong and the film is greatly flawed. Burton's films previously had a sense of being weird and fantastical, yet still eminently real and authentic. They occurred in the real world to otherwise average people. This film, however, is simply just weird. However, it is just as enchanting as his past works and welcomes you with open arms to delight in the peculiarity of the world of this film. Thus, while not as good as his past works, the film remains a delight to behold and experience in spite of its many faults.

Most of my knowledge of the book is coming from second hand information, so I really can’t judge it as an adaptation, but as it stands, it was pretty good. I had some good characters, good writing for the most part and it had some pretty good effects. It kind of fails at sticking to some of the rules it establishes and it has an ending that I didn’t feel completely worked, but as it stands, those are nit picks and I would really recommend seeing the film. I really hope it gets some sequels based on the rest of the books. This isn’t one of Tim Burton’s classics like Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman, Big Fish, Edward Scissorhands or Beetlejuice but it’s a good film nonetheless. It’s a nice film and I can really see it being a future Halloween classic. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, I have to say I really enjoy the movie. And I would recommend you to watch it.
Although I have a few criticisms about the movie, it is how I think to make the movie better.
I really enjoy the concept of the movie, which is quite brilliant, it is like the combination of Harry Potter and X-man, maybe a bit of Matrix.
It is interesting to include time travel in the plot but it can be challenging when paradox is involved. And the mechanics of how the children survive in different timeline are not very well explained. After I watched the movie, there are confusions left behind. Even I had a chat with my friends about the movie, there are plots that are not really making whole lots of sense.
It is always a good feeling have a happy ending but it differs from the novel which might make the sequel plot different if there is a sequel.

I am a complete ignorant about the book series, so my perspective is blind to whatever the books guard and the film neglects. With that in mind, the story is pretty intriguing, although a little bit random or too convenient at times, so prepare your mindset not to be too picky if you wanna enjoy the movie. The first act is long and slow, but you can focus on the grandpa (a very good presence in the story overall, despite...SPOILER REFRAINED!) to make it feel faster. The second act is pretty cool, as meet the peculiar kids and their problem. Pretty much a Harry Potter meets X-Men, but not as good as the former and not as cheesy as the latter (has become). The third act is what every action movie has for a third act nowadays (not gonna give spoilers, but I bet you can guess), but it`s not bad... it is okeyy. Overall, the movie is not as unique as stuff Burton has made before (I guess he is slowly loosing his edge), but it is quite entertaining to watch in the movie theater after-all. Expand

Of course i had done some research before heading to the theaters, so i knew what to expect from the story itself but it was my first encounter with the characters themselves.

The movie is referred to as the „X-men of Tim Burton“ for a good reason. Other than having the same screenplay writer as „X-Men: Days of Future Past“ ( Jane Goldman ), the plot that refers to the main and side characters is somewhat comparable, all having a dark and depressed back story by being different from other humans, and finding peace in their own community.

The first noticeable (and probably annoying) thing in the movie is the slow-paced introduction. It takes some time to really get in the mood that you are in fact watching an adventure-fantasy movie. But after the boring stay-at-home and family part it really starts to get exciting. Introducing so many different yet amazing characters in such a short period of time makes you want to slow down the pace even more and get to know every single on of them. Sadly, most of them aren't described as much as most of us wanted to, but that's a common fact when a book is turned into a movie, the real spirit of the work stays within the pages.I was completely fascinated with the character of Miss Peregrine (Eva Green), which couldn't be more fitting, the great acting skills of Eva Green really hit the top.

The chemistry between the main character, Jake (Asa Butterfield) and Emma (Ella Purnell) didn't really give me that 'awww' feeling, and the action parts didn't get on well with the rest of the movie. I didn't enjoy the last part of the movie that much either.

To get this review to an end, the movie has its ups and downs, but overall i would say that the acting and the story itself is pretty consistent, so I would recommend it to those who wish to bond a bit with the characters, while those who seek action and hype should skip it and try something else. Made for all audiences which makes going to the theaters really pleasant.

It is typical of the eccentricities the British love – the extraordinary in seemingly normal people instead of unrealistically buff comic-strip characters – beautifully directed by Tim Burton with much more emotion than he usually manages in his films. The story was complex but clearly told and the acting by children and adults alike was excellent. And the cinematic mixture of fantasy and “reality” was delicious and completely believable. I loved this movie! I don't know what movie the critics are watching - this is a fun and creative adventure. They are not giving this movie it's due. Go enjoy it!

Having read and enjoyed the books, I was a little uneasy that the film would not live up to my expectations. I could not have been more wrong. Tim Burton's vision (although not always mirroring my imaginings) were wonderful! Eva Green and Samuel Jackson are particularly well cast. The visuals are stunning and the special effects are artfully done. The plot is just right to explain the unique aspects of the peculiar’s amazing world yet to move the story along. I attended the movie with a friends who had not read the books and they loved this movie as well.

The first book in Ransom Riggs’ series sets up the more action-packed second and third novels. The same is true of this movie. I, for one, am hopeful for the sequels!

About as Tim Burtonish as a movie can get, the first half of the movie especially, exploring the new world, one can get lost in forever, it's one of the main reasons I watch movies.

That said, there wasn't an extraordinary amount in the way of conflict and stakes, and really not much of an emotional payoff to the story. It's kind of like it set itself up for the perfect shot, but never took it. So despite all it's other qualities, it fell a bit short of greatness.

What’s it about?

Imagine if Tim Burton made an X-Men movie.

What did I think?

A delightful flight of fancy that will tickle both the heart and imagination, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is a welcome breath of fresh air. We’ve had a glut of children’s books becoming franchises but this one has the right mix of intelligence and whimsy that will leave people of all ages wanting more. Masterful performances from an all-star cast make it hard to single out individuals but special mention should be made of Eva Green whose sudden jerky movements mimic the peregrine falcon she transforms into wonderfully.

The few faults – the climax isn’t as big as one would hope and the concept of time is a bit ‘wibbly wobbly’ – are minor and easily overlooked once you lose yourself in a world of hidden secrets and incredible powers. It’s very understated for Tim Burton, who seems more focused on the story than excessive quirk, but any movie that makes you want to immediately buy the books is doing something right.

I'm more of a comedy/drama/action type movie person so when I decided to go to a movie today, and found out my theater only had one 3D movie showing and it was this one, I watched the trailer and I thought.. "ah, it's OK" .. I like 3D movies, so that's what I wanted to go see, the movie itself wasn't exactly my main priority, although I thought I could like it anyway even if it wasn't what I normally would see. Anyway, I get to the movie and it starts out, and right off the bat I'm hooked. I mean, what was going on with this character? Then it got going, we learned some background information.. as it progresses it just keeps the viewer interested. It has been a long time since I went to a movie and not once looked at my watch. When it ended, I didn't want it to end! I hope they do a sequel! Go see it, get into a different world, it's awesome!
