The innocent peculiar children versus the monstrous peculiar adults.

I thought it should have been a Steven Spielberg film, but he would have compromised on the visually frightening negative characters. Particularly from the little children's angle who are the regular target audience for a theme like this. Even in his recent 'The BFG', you know how the giants were portrayed. So Tim Burton was the right choice and he did his best. But not everybody agrees on that, even I was slightly disappointed. I mean technically it sounded so awesome, but the story was not that impressive. Because of too familiarity, except the peculiar characters.

It was based on the young adult book of the same name. The story of a boy named Jake. After his grandfather's murder, he goes to Wales to find the children from an island home about the stories he had heard when he was a little. He discovers they are intentionally stuck in a time loop to avoid their enemies from striking them. But what they feared is about the come true, so now how they plan to defeat after half a century hiding from them is to be told in the rest of the segment.

As a children's film fan, I wanted to like it, but not fully satisfied. It was a two hour long film, the first half was an introduction that we saw everything from its trailers and teasers. So I lost interest in those parts, but once the clash between the good and bad had began, the film started to give something new. Again the final battle at the fair should have been designed better. I thought Samuel L. Jackson was not untilised well.

The major issue with the film was the narration not trying to take a big step in the story development. Felt like they are aiming for a sequel, so they are avoiding to give out everything in here itself. Similar to the first 'Twilight' film, which was too boring drama. It is almost out of the big screen now and the rating further going to drop. The film critics bashed it, but seems most of the people and film fanatics enjoyed it. I hope they will make 'Hallow City' and I'll be waiting for that.

Thinking about this film makes me quite angry, because it made my apprehensions true, that Tim Burton has completely lost his touch. He hasn't made a quality live-action film since Sweeny Todd, and that might even be stretching it. The source material is not that amazing, but Burton in his prime probably could have made it great. The only good that Miss Peregrine offers is very few sparks of true originality very far between and an enjoyable performance by Eva Green. Expand

Most of this feels like you're in one of Tim Burton's dreams (or nightmares), add a little bit of Eva Green, some kid actors that they must have found off the street, a cameo from Judi Dench and Samuel L. Jackson overacting his way through every single scene. There's no real heart in this film, it's got enough weirdness to keep you entertained for two hours but that's about it. Far from Burton's best but it's not his worst either. So to sum up it can best be described as "meh, it’s alright." A lukewarm recommendation. Expand

There are only occasional glimpses of their gifts and too much dull dialogue. There is an "adventure" that enlists of all them in a fight against evil creatures, but it's lacking in excitement or originality. The fantastical flourishes or visual inventiveness that you'd expect from director Tim Burton are lacking. The whole thing is a relatively flat rendition of the book. Expand

Regardless, this was a disappointing film which, sadly, began with promise. Green is exceptional as always, but the pacing drags, the rest of the cast are lacklustre, and the second half is abysmal. The character design is well executed, and the visual aesthetic is more restrained and refined than other recent Burton films, which was pleasing to see. This might be more enjoyable if you haven't read the novel, though I suspect that it wouldn't be by much. 4.37/10 Expand

Though dazzling in every sense of the word, Miss Peregrine's loses its narrative balance early on, and ends up being nothing more than a boring, uninspired, rocky adaptation of its source material.

I liked Asa Butterfield in Hugo and Ender's Game; he is good here too. Eva Green is striking and is fine in the film. The acting is mostly pretty good. The art direction is really good. But the story or the way it is edited lets the film down. It starts really slowly and takes a while to get to it. Then it rushes through the interesting parts to get to the action scenes in the final act. There is not enough character development, literally none with many characters. This could have been much better. As it is, it was just ok. Expand

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is not peculiar enough to face the plot's magical hands as it tries to follow along with the book that inspired this film. Tim Burton probably did a hit-and-miss here.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I know Tim Burton's name for the first time when I saw "Batman" (1989) (his work such as Beetlejuice never imported to Indonesia), and I saw several of his outstanding piece of work such as "Edward Scissorhands" "Sleepy Hollow" "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" "Alice in Wonderland" and "Sweeny Todd". From my experience Tim Burton's "peculiar" that he is very strong in visualization. It's kinda like a child's unstoppable wild imagination. So I expected so much from this movie This movie is about a community of human with special abilities that choose an awkward way to live their live, repeat one day life by creating magic loop These humans are children with special abilities that under protection of an adult protector. The film starts with Jake Portman (Asa Butterfield), a regular teenager living in suburban Florida with his awful parents and also a worker in supermarket. Since he was about 4 or 5 years old, he already been told a fantastic adventure story by his grandfather Abe (Terence Stamp), that Abe admit is his real life adventure. As years goes by, Jake's torn apart between his believe in Abe's story and the science that he learn at school that there are no such things as multi tentacle tongue monsters or children with special abilities. But these stories about monsters and "special children" suddenly seem like they might hold some dark truth to them after one night he found out his grandfather Abe killed with both his eyes taken. Before Abe take his last breath, still manage to ask Jake (he always call his grandson Tygritus – Tiger in Polland) to go to Wales and find Miss Peregrine. And the story goes, that finally Jake found the house only to find out that the house already burnt down on Germany bombing in Sep 3rd 1943, driven by his curiosity he entered that house and meet these peculiar children accidentally. These children then brought him to a place and magically he swan his own eyes the same house his grandfather told him about, in the same place that he know that already blown away by Germany bomber plane. Then Jake meet Miss Peregrine (Eva Green) who is capable of transforming herself into a falcon and the ability to manipulated time – which she is not the only one that can do this.Miss Peregrine has been able so far to preserve in an endless cycle (like one of Tom Cruise sci-fi movie "Edge of Tomworrow") the day prior to the fatal bombing by creating secret magic "loops" in exact time. Then Emma (Ella Purnell), the sweet blonde who has to wear lead heavy boot so she doesn't fly away. There's Olive (Lauren McCrostie), the redhead who has to wear gloves cause There's the girl with a ravenous mouth hidden on the back of her head. The invisible boy "Wilard"who likes to play tricks. The 8 years old girl who can make things grow super fast. The 12 years old boy who can use his eyeball to project image and finally the weird masked twins (and wear a weird costume). Frankly I got a very big hope for this movie, that I wish this movie is more then just some human with special abilities torn in good and bad side (oups...does this sound like X Men?), but turn out to be "X-Kids". In my personal opinion this movies shouldn't take 2 hours, because almost one hour the visionary Tim Burton failed to develop mystery chemistry into the mind of audience, even though Tim already succeeded snap my mind through the tragedy of Abe death and the creepy glance of Baroon (Samuel L.Jackson) in the first 15 minutes, but then my curiosity is just like vaporized into the air.

Tim Burton waste to much time to explore things that I think is not even matter to much for this movie that even didn't work well – like the emotional between Emma and Jake or the supper. I think is a bit better if Tim just cut it to the chase where Emma finally proof that to Jake that he also a peculiar kid (Jake can see things what others can't).

If there are things that this movie do is the well done performance of Eva Green as Miss Peregrine. She played the character in such style, and since I and many most of audience in my town never read the book – Eva succeeded gave us a cruel Miss Peregrine in mind, her performance really gorgeous with dark gown, really portray a vigilante, wise and always beware lady killer. And so Samuel L.Jackson, that not just soft lens for evil eyes – as usual his long experience that made all that gesture that he is so evil. The rest? Well, they play along, not bad, but just play along. The action parts? The only thing that still eye catching is the multi tentacle tongue monsters and a little bit surprise the weird twin kids really have deadly abilities.

Burton's visual style can be found throughout. The movie is just very different in tone from his previous works.

The X-Men comparisons aren't unfair. In fact they're practically unavoidable. The concept mirrors Marvel's long-running comic series in a plethora of ways and just throws in a time-travel angle and instead of mutants the kids are called "Peculiars." They're also much less heroic. At least in terms of human affairs.

If perhaps FOX's X-Men movies aren't something you feel comfortable introducing to your kids right now, Miss Peregrine might have a team that you'll find more suitable. With the exception of some surprisingly strong and definitely unnecessary profanity in one scene it's a fairly kid-friendly movie. It also happens to avoid having that usual Burton darkness. It's actually surprising how cartoonish things get. It gets to the point where all the tension is sucked out of everything. While I found this made the movie more enjoyable than I've found previous Burton movies to be, it does end up hurting things in the end. The whole thing ends up feeling formulaic and play safe. It might have actually benefited from some of Burton's usual gothic edginess. At least we get a fantastic performance from Samuel L. Jackson out of it. As like with many movies in his career, Jackson is a real scene stealer and absolutely delightful to watch.

Burton's visual panache make for an attractive movie. The source material proves to add some extra life to the mix, but yet things still fall short and it's not quite clear where and why. It could definitely use things like more fleshed out characters, but at the very least we get an imaginative assortment of powers and creatures brought to life onscreen. At the end of the day things aren't all that satisfying, but it's a decent attempt at making a more kid-friendly X-Men movie for the big screen.

So listless and uninspired. It feels like a facsimile of something people think is Burton-esque, but really isn't. The biggest problem is that it is ostensibly a children's movie but keeps trying to pretend it's not. Who's it for?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Never read the books, though as a movie this didn't really work for me. Firstly, it takes ages to get going. The home preamble before the house is discovered could have easily been cut in half. I just didn't care about the relationship he had with his father, it was totally incidental to the plot. Secondly, when he arrives at the house we find that none of the children's characters are developed beyond their freakish ability. The only one you warm to is the blonde girl. The hollows and the whole business of eye-eating is so grotesque and terrifying I am surprised it made the age-rating it did. Lastly, other than Eva Green (who doesn't have a huge amount of screen time) there weren't really any standout performances. Terence Stamp phoned it in whereas Samuel Jackson went the other way and hammed it up, basically playing the same part he has played in all his movies since Pulp Fiction. Judi Dench is in it for literally three scenes. The CGI battle on Blackpool pier is very jarring compared to everything that happened before. I just think that is Spielberg has directed this movie it would have come out a lot better. As it stands it was weird but not in a good way, and often quite boring. Expand

I've seen Rol Dahl movies like The Witches so I know dark kids fantasy but this is a little too much. I could manage the kids who has jars of hearts to animate things, but the eating eyeballs, especially with the optic nerve wiggling as people speared them with forks was way too much. Ignoring that, it had the usual Burton attention to staging and the use of color and some sharp dialog. I wish Eva Green had a character with more range because she is almost a cardboard cut out here. I did find the story enjoyable, and I do like that the kids' powers aren't all destroy the world like x-men or other comic book characters. Odd powers are just as likely as cool powers after all. A good try for this movie. I'd give it a seven if Burton did something about the eyeball eating. Expand

At first II'd hoped this may be a more family friendly Tim Burton film and I had considered buying it on disk but it was shown on TV and sadly it wasn't a film I felt especially compelled to concentrate on, or otherwise at all engrossed in. At first I was interested because I like Asa Butterfield as an actor and I won't deny there are certainly good visual effects/CGI but it seemed just too, well, as the title suggests, peculiar! I suppose I was warned lol I just couldn't quite get my head around all the plot details - the plot narrative didn't seem especially clear and I lost interest in why certain things were happening. It was a bit too much for me personally I guess. There are some mildly creepy moments, although nothing especially scared me as such but its more a case that it was too much eccentricity at once and I felt confused about the chronology and things, let alone what had happened to to the main characters dad and all the talk about different time loops and things just confused me further. I imagine that if I'd seen this in the cinema, it may have been a bit more absorbing and I might have appreciated it more but watching this at home, I did feel I really lost interest certainly mid way to 3/4 of the way through.

Also, I was somewhat surprised to see Dame Judi Dench present in this film, who I guess I wouldn't have thought as an obvious choice of actor for a Tim Burton film but, there you go. Also present is Samuel L Jackson - his character, Barron, is one of the perhaps more cool, or fun, characters and Chris O'Dowd plays Jakes dad, Frank. I quite liked certainly the first half hour or so of the film, it just (like other Tim Burton films) got a bit too complicated not long after that and I realised, certainly after an hour or so, that I didn't really understand why things were going on and lost a lot of my interest in it. I ended up switching it off before the end as I was lost in terms of the context of the plot and so on. Overall, unsurprisingly, I wouldn't recommend this film, no.
