Funny, exciting and refreshing. Good jokes, great message, even eye opening at times. Something with substance should always be welcome specially in this era of movies reboots.

Rogen's character more than leaned left so I am guessing most of the negative reviews comes from those viewers where this would be a problem. Stick with the critics reviews. The slapstick is okay but the commentary on our world today will keep you laughing throughout. The summer movie season is a time of big budget special effects heavy superhero movies, action movies, sequels, remakes, and reboots, but, also, a high-profile comedy or two. This summer’s high-profile comedy is the very R-rated Long ShotThe summer movie season is a time of big budget special effects heavy superhero movies, action movies, sequels, remakes, and reboots, but, also, a high-profile comedy or two. This summer’s high-profile comedy is the very R-rated Long Shot starring Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen. This unlikely romantic comedy is as solidly entertaining and smart as it is funny and raunchy. Movies for grownups don’t get made too often these days, so when one comes along and it is as good and funny as this it is a treat. Charlize Theron plays Charlotte Field, the popular and successful Secretary of State for idiot President Chambers (Bob Odenkirk), who won the election because he used to play the president on TV. The President tells her that he’s not seeking reelection so he can pursue a film career and he plans to endorse her for president once she gets a global environmental agreement off the ground.

After being informed by a PR firm that people find her lacking a sense of humor, Charlotte hires a crusading journalist, Fred Flarsky, played by Seth Rogen, who recently quit his job because his news outlet was bought up by an unscrupulous conservative media conglomerate to punch up the humor in her speeches. Fred and Charlotte actually grew up in the same neighborhood and she was his babysitter who he very much had a crush on. They reconnect at a fundraiser featuring Boyz II Men where Rogen takes the first of a few slapstick tumbles. Schlubby Fred is jetted of to Stockholm, the first of many global destinations, bringing nothing with him but a garish windbreaker, awkward tapered cargo pants, and some illegal narcotics. He’s a fish out of water to say the least. Long Shot's screenplay is written by Dan Sterling and Liz Hannah and directed by Jonathan Levine. Seth Rogen is only credited as a producer, but any movie featuring Rogen, whether he wrote it or not, sets up certain comedic expectations. To be specific, an irreverent, raunchy, juvenile, foul mouthed, stoner sense of humor. That certainly describes Long Shot’s comedic sensibility, but its comedy is mostly verbal, though there is one gross out sight gag that the climax of the film hinges on (so be forewarned about that). All of the humor, even the gross out gag, is firmly rooted in the characters, so no joke or gag feels artificially tacked on for shock value

As Charlotte and Fred spend more and more time together so he can get to know her better to add more of her personality into her speeches, they begin an unlikely and entirely believable romance. "Long Shot" refers to Charlotte as a presidential candidate, but it also refers to Fred as a romantic partner for the beautiful high-profile politician. Rogen and Theron are an unlikely pair but they have great chemistry. Rogen delivers his signature clever slacker character and comedic style, but Theron is far and away the star of this picture. She’s done heavy drama, dark comedy, broad comedy, action, and now clever, raunchy comedy, and she’s done them all extremely well. Hopefully Long Shot doesn’t get lost in the shuffle of big budget summer blockbuster spectacles because it is definitely worth seeking out. This foul mouthed, big hearted romantic comedy is bound to delight.

The rom-com is such a rigid, formulaic, stale genre - it’s little wonder so many of them offer so little. Living up to its name, “Long Shot” avoids the typical pitfalls.

In case you care, here’s the story: Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron) is the Secretary of State. When President Chambers (Bob Odenkirk) decides not to run for re-election, he intends to endorse her. Field’s handlers tell her she needs to be funnier; enter Fred Farsky (Seth Rogan) to “punch up” her formal addresses and stump speeches. As they travel across the globe, the unlikely pair fall in love. Field experiences a political crisis. Farsky has an embarrassing video misadventure that goes viral. Will circumstances tear the lovers apart? Is this a rhetorical question? Along the way, we are reminded of “Pretty Woman” with a dash of Kevin Kline’s “Dave” (1993). We’re also treated to innumerable, often gratuitious, f-bombs coming from all directions.

This film succeeds for three reasons. First, the directing and the screenplay are both first-rate. Director Jonathan Levine (2017’s Amy Schumer vehicle “Snatched”) shows a deft, confident, knowing touch throughout. Screenwriters Dan Sterling (whose TV work includes “The Office” and writing for Jon Stewart and Sara Silverman) and Liz Hannah (2017’s “The Post”) have created a story and dialogue that are fresh, topical and totally charming.

The second factor elevating this film is the onscreen chemistry. Theron and Rogan are magical together. They seem to genuinely enjoy each other’s company, creating a pairing that almost seems somewhat vaguely plausible. It’s so much fun, you don’t analyze it too much. There are also some excellent secondary performers. Both Odenkirk as the President (who desperately wants to make the transition from his former career in TV into movies – several characters agree that only George Clooney and Woody Harrelson have done it successfully) and Alexander Skarsgard (as Canadian PM James Steward) offer hilarious studies in quirky self-deprecation.

Third, this film soars because of the scoring. We’re treated to an actual concert by Boyz II Men as well as well-timed selections ranging from Aretha Franklin (“Bridge Over Troubled Waters”) to David Bowie, The Cure, Blondie, Springsteen and others. At key points, the whole show is elevated by the tunes in the background pulling it along.

If you’re looking for a searing analysis of the existential angst that is the human condition, go see this year’s “Cold War” (or, better yet, don’t). If you want something cool and surprisingly refreshing on a hot Spring afternoon, see this film. You’ll smile all the way home.

1) Many years ago I was taught to leave logic at the door when I go to the movies.
2) Have you ever seen a couple that made you question how/why they ever got together?
3) Is there another woman, besides Julia Roberts, as beautiful to look at in print and film as Charlize Theron?
4) In 2003 I said that if Theron didn't win the Oscar for "Monster" I was never going to the movies again--WHEW! She did!

Okay, now that I got that out of my system, let's talk about "Long Shot". Take away the 'F' word, a 'fluid' shot and a not quite nude sex scene and you have one of those delightful, romantic comedies of the past. Though there doesn't seem to be any chemistry between the leads Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen, his beard doesn't help, nor the fact that at the age of 16 she baby sat him at 13, they are both excellent players and Theron adding another genre in her performance here as a comediane.

The comedy lines work better than the romantic scenes but together it makes for a pleasing, charming movie. Supporting performances like those of Seth Rogan's best friend O'Shea Jackson Jr., or Theron's assistants Claude O'Doherty and Ravi Patel with Bob Odenkirk as the President of the United States all work well and know their way with the zingers supplied by screenwriters Dan Sterling and Paul Scheer. The direction by Jonathan Levine but could have cut the movie sharper to move it a little faster.

The only one I question in the movie is Alexander Skarsgard who in normal circumstances would have been Theorn's romantic interest but in this is just charmless, by design(?) or 100% miscast.

"Long Shot" isn't a classic but it is a lot of fun and you get to look at, admire and, maybe, be jealous of Charlize Theron for 2 hours! :O)

Unashamedly progressive, which is cool because it doesn't try and subtly introduce it's politics with stealth. It wears everything on it's sleeve. Not like a Disney or Marvel film where everything is shoe horned in there to tick boxes with women, minorities etc. We need a film like this now, that bigs women up. If you're some whiney little gimp who doesn't have the spine to love the fairer sex because you can't get laid and would rather be hateful then it won't be for you. But if you're open minded and you appreciate gender equality and good humour, you'll have a blast Expand

Long Shot, right on point?

This week we have before you a review of “Long Shot” starring Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron. A true romantic comedy with millennial humor and socially relevant commentary. Will the odd couple be a match for you to see? Let’s find out.

Let’s get the bad points out of the way. The movie gets corny… BUT THAT’S WHAT YOU EXPECT FROM A ROMANTIC COMEDY! The movie is predictable… BUT WHAT ROMANTIC COMEDY ISN’T?! Seth Rogen is acting like himself… UH DUH WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?! With the obvious things out of the way, let us get to the positive notes.

Now for the positive notes: This movie is undoubtedly funny. I might even go as far as saying hilarious at times. I honestly can say that I laughed from the opening scene to the credits. The writers and actors executed the lines very well.

Speaking of actors, the cast did a very good job. The surprise delight character… O’shea Jackson Jr. He was the perfect compliment friend and character in this movie. Otherwise, Charlize Theron was quite captivating in her role. I found myself falling in love with her, respecting her and laughing at her character. Surprisingly, I think Charlize’s success in the movie is due to her great chemistry with Seth Rogen. Seth displayed some sincere acting ability throughout the movie. Yes, he was doing his normal crass stoner humor, but also displayed some solid range that I didn’t think I wanted to see in romantic comedy. This is a step up from his previous movie “Knocked Up”.

Long story short, this movie is actually very funny and will have you laughing throughout. This movie is perfect for a date night but I can understand if people don’t want to spend night time fare. DATE NIGHT FRESH POPCORN BOX or catch the matinee.
