This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Earlier this week I read an article about how some people were so pissed at a 90 second sex scene in Long Shot that there was shouting at the premier from people who were psychically revolted by the idea of female orgasm without foreplay after a minute and a half. This obviously made me more curious about seeing the movie and I get the sense after having huddled with Wife that Long Shot may be a bit of a divisive film. In some ways, I’m inclined to say that the film was sort of the movie equivalent of a 90 second orgasm, which, depending on where you stand on that debate is either kind of disappointing and shameful for all parties involved or a modest and realistic depiction of some aspects of human desire in the second decade of the 2000s.

In some ways, I think that Long Shot is more a movie about people in their late 30s and early 40s dating one another. In that way, it’s a kind of interesting cultural artifact for understanding Generation Y as it enters into its “mid-life crisis” phase. I’m a little bit hard-pressed to think of the last time I watched a rom-com starring two people that were of that age. (After talking to Wife and Friends about this last night, they mentioned Juliet, Naked and, in fact, Rose Byrne and Chris O’Dowd are both exactly 39 years of age, and Ethan Hawke is 86.)

On the issue of divisiveness, I fall into the camp of labeling this film a pretty run-of-the-mill Fantasy-Fulfillment movie for schlubby males of a certain age. For me, it’s hard to see what kind of analogy for the real world is being set up by a successful career politician falling in love with an unemployed man-child with a penchant for emotional outbursts. At a certain point the scenario seems too specific to have applications to a realistic or sympathetic referent in our regular experiences. This is when Wife stopped me and said, “I think it’s supposed to be more of an opposites attract” movie, which kind of took me aback, because I was expecting her to have a more critical take. I said, “But why do the ‘opposites’ always have to be the same? Pretty, smart woman” and unemployed dumpster muppet? Which she allowed. But her initial impulse about the movie having a certain kind of charm has been echoed in some reviews, including at Slate.

“I liked the fact that the movie was about the lead up to her announcement rather than whether she would win the presidency,” Wife said. “It made it lower stakes.” Maybe it’s the case that the modest scope of the romance works in its favor, and likewise that the winter sequence’s relative brevity is excusable, maybe even preferable for what Long Shot was trying to do.

Jackson O’Shea is darling in this movie, by the way.

The soundtrack was a lot of fun, especially the moments created by a languorous and moody Moon River by Frank Ocean and Aretha Franklin’s rendition of Bridge Over Troubled Waters. The film kind of encourages musical jokes because so much of their conversation and their interactions in social situations has to do with music: discussing their favorite music, seeing pop idols from the 90s, listening to an iPhone in the backroom of a restaurant.

Just another racist propaganda film. Don't waste your time unless you're in love with soy.

One of the worst films ever made. It's nothing but leftist propaganda masquerading as entertainment. Of course given it stars and was written by Cuck Rogen that should not be surprising.

Though there were a few funny moments, it was not nearly as witty as I hoped it would be, and the pairing of these two is just so unbelievable as to be cringe-worthy. Theron is, of course, lovely and elegant and does a decent job with her character. Rogen, however, is just icky...an annoying one-note shlub who is supposedly brilliant, but the little writing of his we hear consists of f-bombs and juvenile turns of phrase. There is no real chemistry between them and the implausibility of the situation ratchets up every ten minutes. I got so annoyed I almost walked out a few times--just stayed to see how it ended (rom com spoiler--happily!). The secondary characters of Bob Odenkirk's clueless president; Charlotte's aide Margaret, wonderfully played by June Diane Raphael; Andy Serkis as a snarky and sinister media magnate; and the good-looking but goofy PM of Canada, played by Alex Skaarsgard, more or less stole the show...but are not quite worth sitting through the movie for. If you can't stay away, just go with extremely well-managed expectations. Expand

Why do the writers for this film think using foul words all the time in this film think that's funny. Now I just saw a preview of kids in their movie using the same words again! It must be a sign of the times.

Possibly the most boring, unfunny, uncreative crap I have ever seen. Same old jokes, nothing new, dumb foul dialogue, same old Trump bashing, women need to be president and need to be screwing all the time. No one was laughing in the audience

Some of the lines and scenes are less than sophomoric. The plot is somewhat plausible if it had a good leading male actor to balance Charlize Theron's impeccable acting and beautiful looks. The male lead should pack it up and get another career that he might be at least good at. Some of the male leads humor and lines goes back to elementary school levels like 4-6th grade. Don't torture yourself by seeing this one. Expand

Gladly walked out at the ninety-minute mark. Every scene/joke revolves around sex, drugs, and/or alcohol - If that's all your characters care about, what makes you think a non-trashy person (like myself) is gonna care about them?

(***Self-Indulgence masquerading as 'reverse' self-indulgence):
In ‘Long Shot’, Rogen avails himself of the ‘underdog’ pretext early-on AND thruout --- a ‘tried’ trait ever-prevalent in cinema since Chaplin --- yet re-sets-the-‘Me-Me-Me' bar by subtending the plot w/ the premise that ONLY ‘he’ (a rebel ugly-duckling) will ever prove a ‘fling-target’ of accomplished women (in politics or elsewise); …whereupon even Canada 's PM turns out merely a ‘contemptible’ up-close (in comparison); if not utterly incompetent vis-à-vis Rogen ‘s hooded-nerd-cum-Tuxedo-clad Alpha-Male --- …all the while incorporating peripheral garbage (an assistant ‘s furtive fling, a ‘brother’ hooked on religion) simply so as to remind us he ‘s SO cool + ‘down’-w/-the-scene that any accomplished female ‘d be a fool NOT to desire him!  –Likewise, introducing folks to cool drug-scenes & hangouts inasfar as only ‘he’ well-knows after-hour nooks & crannies, yet persisting on donning a cloak of 'meekness' withal!!  ---Having 'conned’ an accomplished actress like ‘Theron’ into playing the lovesick-for-Rogen-alone fool (seeing as she ‘s a ‘tried’ thespian who can actually pull-it-off) simply serves so as to have us all ‘fall’ for this 'zany' yarn entailing a ‘miser’ who turns out presidential ‘Boy-Toy’ (…w/ White-House 'politics'-per-se devolving into a mere sub-plot thruout)!  -Hey:  I too can write my own plot, else imbue it w/ my own script-scenario~!  -Yet I 'd wear the 'tuxedo' right-off-the-bat so 's folks can 'get over' any macho-ruggedness 'publicity' on-my-part;  ...whereby the storyline can finally kick in --- rather than hoodwink unsuspecting viewers from-the-start!

But the language was a hill too high to climb. It might of helped if it had somehow added to the story, but sadly not a bit. After the 30th or 40th time of enduring the f-word, we gave up. So sad. The theater graciously gave us a generous refund. Expand
