Rogen and Theron are going hand-in-hand in a politically correct rom-com, it may not be the game changer, but it surely will sunny side up your weekend.

Long Shot

Levine has always had the lexicon to portray any cinematic event into a work day. Usually, it asks for the other way around, but since Jonathan Levine, the director's, world is often pragmatic and deals with common issues, it pins the entire film into the ground to a more convincing state. And quirky as the concept may sound, the writers, Dan Sterling and Liz Hannah (especially) enroutes a passage with a single string and no breaks. This linearity in the narration not only doesn't detour or distract the viewers but also doesn't have time or space to branch out a gag.

Hence, surprisingly in a film like such, the gags are part of a narrative which makes the storytelling smart and to the point. A rom-com like such falls under the pressure to create a villainous misunderstanding or a lie or childishness among the lead couple in order to split them before the last act. And as much as textbook the structure of the film is, the chemistry between Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron is so genuine, that you find it impossible to pick out a flaw in their homemade dish.

And even at its cheesiest or obligatory part of the film, there is a certain amount of maturity that is handled verbally and not some huge antic that is shielded by an emotionally wrecked system or hot heads floating around the crown. Theron gets a stereotypical forcefully reserved character whose key is held by Rogen who frankly oozes much more warmth than she does in their controversial relationship. Another excellent choice to be shout out for, is the awareness of the expectancy of the viewers that is accounted in, this precarious yet strong relation is build up by the writers like a jenga game where you are waiting for it to collapse brutally and that very Long Shot of relying upon the sense of vulnerability helps her get elected.

Long Shot was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. I went into this film with low expectations and was expecting a very mediocre film. I was pleasantly surprised. I went into this film with low expectations and was expecting a very mediocre film. I was pleasantly surprised. Let’s get the negatives out of the way. The tone of this film is severely inconsistent. There is a scene where Seth Rogen’s character and Charlize Theron’s character get attacked by a militia group and the scene goes from being serious to funny and to romantic and this happens within 3 minutes. Most of the movie is like this and it starts to get annoying. About 25% of the jokes were not funny at all and were just weird and the film starts to get a little too political in the second half. And now what are the positives of this film. Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron’s chemistry with each other is the single best part of this film. Both actors play off each other really well and it’s a lot of fun watching them act together. Most of the supporting cast does a fun job. I really liked Andy Serkis as the big media head. 75% of the jokes were actually pretty funny. I wasn’t expecting how funny they would be. I won’t spoil any of the jokes but the video at the end they show is extremely funny. The cinematography isn’t anything special. The plot is understandable and flows nicely from scene to scene. The dialogue is natural and doesn’t feel forced. The visuals are fine except for this one helicopter about halfway through the film. Overall, Long Shot provides a funny romance film with great chemistry between the lead actor and actress and extremely funny jokes while lacking a consistent tone. I give Long Shot a 6/10. Expand

Funnier than I thought it would be. Rogen sorta funny, but a bit too political. Theron in full glamour mode, not really funny, but that's not really her thing, is it? Almost good, certainly not terribad, just okay.

Cute, albeit formulaic and predictable political rom-com. The main draw here is the charm and chemistry from Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron, and there are some funny moments to be had, but nothing too hilarious to me, and like I said, theCute, albeit formulaic and predictable political rom-com. Overall, if the "unlikely but not impossible" pairing of Rogen and Theron that the film's marketing has been employing is enough to intrigue you, you'll likely enjoy it for their fun performances and chemistry with one another, but other than that, it's nothing hilarious and for me proved mostly forgettable, remaining in the shadow of other rom-coms with all too similar tropes/situations. I typically really enjoy Rogen movies, and he, Theron and Jackson Jr. are all entertaining here, but this one is just ok. If you just want to watch it cause of Charlize Theron, it maybe would be a good choice, but if you want to watch a comedy, unfortunately I have to tell you that it's not the one that you expect. Here is a challenge: take a shot every time you see the word “submit” below:

America has had an… interesting history, one that’s reached the point of its people gladly watching a bunch of fictional superhumans rule space. The cinematic world responsible for that also tempts viewer submission into vulgar comedies like Long Shot, which celebrates all the negative characteristics the nation spends its time pondering over, including the wrong conclusions drawn out about what will solve our problems.

This hard-R romantic comedy has issues that start with its inability to relate the target audience well with the two leads. As much as the pothead journalist, Fred, spends time with the youngest Secretary of State, the awkward sexualization of her buffers down the depth of a flashback he has. In that flashback, Fred was thirteen, she was his sixteen-year-old babysitter, they kissed, his crotch popped, and there’s nothing else to analyze about these characters beyond that. Eventually this overly familiar rom-com style suddenly becomes an action genre, then quickly back again without fluidity, proving an inability to stay focused on a cinematic style. No, it doesn’t matter if there is a hilariously realistic sex scene between these two very different members of the political arena, the appeal to a mass audience needs to go beyond familiar tropes.

In fact, the crass nature promotes bad uneasy images to merely conclude without reason that a woman as the president will solve our problems. In truth, no leader, man or woman, can stop everything that goes on beneath our awareness, including a submissive cult depicted in this movie that forces its all-White-male members to get a Swastika tattoo. Fred finds himself wound up in that very predicament on a journalism project, and that scene honestly should have been cut out completely for its lack of any relevance to the plot. There’s even grosser depictions of inferiority that holds back proper screen time on details that matter, it’s said at one point that Fred is Democratic, and his apparently inferior Black friend Lance is Christian-Republican; nothing important to the plot there, just thrown in as an attack on anyone who isn’t White and Atheist. The same goes to the nine different countries this romantic couple travels to; none of them are positively represented.

To worsen matters, the nonsensical script unintentionally borders around Saturday Night Live territory. Between the places these two go visit, the governmental structure ignores reality as no sense of security submits necessary borders around them. The Secretary’s proposal of a Global Rehabilitation Initiative to springboard a 2020 campaign comes off more like a terrible Fox News skit than something discussed in-depth on Good Morning, America.

Now, it’s not all bad, because the humor mostly works; Fred drinking tequila out of a baggie is immediately identifiable. Also, right before entering the Secretary of State’s office, considerable time lingers on the emptying of his pockets to security. If nothing else about him, Fred’s loud windbreaker should imprint the memory even when he churns out speeches inspired by his new girlfriend’s youth. So, topped off by the hilarious way he manipulates his incomplete Swastika tattoo, the circumstances of tequila squeezed from agaves generate a great laugh.

As a plus, the cast while not amazing at least passes as average, particularly O'Shea Jackson Jr. who submits his acting talent as Fred’s best friend and keeps things from drowning. Meanwhile, Seth Rogen’s clumsy walking style contrasts Charlize Theron’s silly hand wave that proves how disorderly she really is. Together, these two misfits submit a fair attempt at political parody based on what relatively little was available by the direction and script.

Speaking of scripts, here is a real fast definition of America: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness.” (Declaration of Independence, 1776)

As much as Long Shot tries to honor tradition, many international films out there are still better at expanding the audience’s cultural horizons. Know that America’s name comes from Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian, which means since the very beginning, the United States remains White and male. Right now, looking at our cultural climate over the past three terms, orange became the new black, and boy became the new man. It would be wonderful to someday see a perfectly qualified Black lady rule from inside the oval office, but until that happens, please refrain from electing a drug-induced Charlize Theron who takes selecting her speechwriter so lightly.

It's an odd couple? Yes, but they do have chemistry, yet there's nothing remarkable in it.

I mean it's funny for some moments and you obviously have to believe the **** the film builds in order to actually enjoy the story because I hate to be the guy who puts it in that way, but c'mon, such a powerful woman with Charlize Theron's looks falling in love of a guy like Seth Rogen's character? Please.

It's a story that has been seen countless times before, yes even with men and while entertaining enough, it doesn't come up with anything new and it doesn't really bring something more interesting to the table of these genre.

It's just light comedy and romance. It might work for the weekend but if you're up for more substance you will have too look for something else.

There's just a general watchability when it comes to Rogen and Theron's chemistry that pervades through even some of the slower parts of the plot, which does end up spreading itself too thin, to say the least. The humor works, though there are more than a handful of jokes that sort of fall out of the realm of "sophisticated political satire" and into the "2010's SNL skit" pool, ultimately hampering the overall comedic identity as a whole. Again, it's not perfect at all, but it is an effort of sorts. Expand

Charlize Theron was my only reason to watch this aside from all that high rating which I have no slightly idea why ! Well I have been fooled before by the high rating so its not new of first for me !!

I have seen way better comedy and way much funnier films I can't consider this one as of them ...

Hollywood again have added some adult parts here and there ((Check Parents Guide)) thinking that these kind of scenes people would like and laugh about and will consider it funny!

Bottom line:
If you are a Charlize Theron nor Seth Rogen fan you better watch it to kill some time otherwise I don't recommend to wast your time if have a chance to watch a much better movie

It's sincere and watchable. Touching and funny. I have no idea why some critics are calling it raunchy... It's not. It is thematically powerful in its politics and messages without hitting you over the head with an ethical mallet. It captures the relevant and exhausting issues that we can't believe some plague us to this day: environmental endangerment, racism, sexism, and corruption in an almost-simplistic way but it works, because it's a reflection of our climate in which the most simple and basic needs of Earth and common welfare are continuing to be undermined and exploited in the same maddeningly tiresome way as always. So it captures that. I can't say enough good things about this film. I'm amazed it's averaging 67 on metacritic-- I personally found it to be a triumph of a romantic comedy. Expand

Os personagens sã o bem desenvolvidos, e a justificativa para as dificuldades do mesmo e até o motivo pelo qual eles se conhecem melhor me pareceram bem convincentes. O cast tá muito bem, como de costume, com destaque aos protagonistas que tiveram uma química interessante. O timing cômico é bom, dando certo em vários momentos, e não deixando a "vergonha alheia no ar" quando não colava. Algumas posições politicas não me desceram, soando fora da realidade até pra essa obra, mas não me geraram um incomodo grande.

Rogen's humor is not demented, irreverent and politically incorrect: it is as vulgar, coarse and scurrilous as that of the Farrelly brothers in the most ineffective moments of their filmography. That gag of "There's Something About Mary" (1998) was stupid then and remains so even after more than 20 years. Therefore it is dysfunctional to a romcom, which moreover spends more time winking at Capra, "Beauty and the Beast", "Pretty Woman" and reselling the joke about the declassification of the Kennedy murder (already used twice by Bay) than to seriously believe in itself. Why then should it be done by us?
