This time they’re Montana ranchers, who set out to rescue their young grandson when his mother disappears with her new husband. This starts as a quiet tragedy about grief and loss, but SLOWLY turns into a somewhat frightening thriller, as they discover the truth about their new relatives. Actually, the final few minutes ramp up the friction to “screaming at the screen” levels. The actors are all solid with Lesley Manville creating an especially fearsome smiling matriarch. Director Thomas Bezucha has given the parents plenty of time for interaction, sometimes frustratingly so, but there’s a thread of the couple’s undying love that runs under the underlying sense of malevolence that continually pervades the drama. I watch that other stuff, but it's tiring the way politics is tiring. Let Him Go is a movie that feels real because the dialog is so spare and the characters are in highly dramatic circumstances of the sort that ordinary people find themselves in. Of course, the stars are more attractive than most people I know. And if we had another half hour of movie time to use, I would have appreciated more development of the back story of the bad guys. But this was a rewarding movie-going experience with a good story, good acting, beautiful scenery from Montana and South Dakota that is hardly ever featured in movies I watch, the values of middle America, the courage of ordinary people, the evil of ordinary people and a realistic time piece set in the late 60s. Beautifully done. Expand

The YELLOWSTONE fans should get their kicks, the family drama and (kind of sudden) action bits are entertaining. Lags a bit in the middle but worth a recommendation if you think it’s up your alley

It wasn't as compelling as I thought it would be, but I think it was ok enough. Expand

This was a lot darker than I expected and there are great performances all around. Kevin Costner is usually the leading man, but his understated performance really compliments Diane Lane's lead. Shocking and heartbreaking, but thoroughly enjoyable.

Having personally never been the biggest fan of Costner, I do enjoy neo-westerns quite a bit, so I ultimately decided to check it out. And while it has some tense moments, the film proved to be a bit more of a slow burn than I anticipated. Things moved at a snail's pace for the most part for me. The acting from all involved also seemed a little stale to me. Storywise, it felt like nothing I haven't already seen before, and despite a tense final act, it wasn't quite enough to justify the rest of the film or its pace for me, not to mention a resolution that felt a little forced. Overall, Costner fans might appreciate and get a little more out of it than I did, but that still doesn't take into account the slow pace and straightforward and generic story. Expand

Surprisingly engrossing Kevin Coster, Diane Lane film that's well made and builds to a realistically satisfying conclusion, makes a nice change from a lot of the drivel we've been fed of late - 9 stars

I liked this movie. I liked both Kevin and Diane. They did a great job! The film reminded me of Kevin's " Dance with wolves. I learned the dark side of American history. Overall, I liked the good plot, actors and beautiful mountains!

Chivalrous male sacrifice for the survival of women. In the name of gender equality, matriarchy returns to reign.

It's a dark (literally and thematically speaking) watch and ocassionally its gritty. Once the plot picks up pace, there's quite an effective sense of threat felt. The cast give decent performances and while perhaps the themes covered aren't entirely original, its a pretty memorable film I thought, so I'd say its worth a watch. The dark lighting may cause an issue for some if your watching it in a brightly lit area as I found myself struggling slightly to see what was going on in some scenes but thats perhaps a relatively small niggle, as it were. I would recommend this film, yes. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sorry contains spoilers. I was disappointed in this film. The critics were way too generous. It’s wonderful to see Diane Lane and Kevin Costner together again. Both bring a lot to the table and give solid performances in this film. The slower pace and character driven script were both refreshing given what’s currently available. The reason I was disappointed was the realism of the script. There were scenes that didn’t make sense or ring true. I was frustrated with some of the responses and where the script took the audience. I found myself rolling my eyes at how unbelievable some of it was. If my husband of decades was shot and killed I would not leave him in a burning house and drive away with only a few tears (and an ex daughter-in-law I had little connection with), even though I had rescued the beloved grandson. There was a man with her when she discovered her dead husband, why didn’t they pull him out of the house? Lane should have been more distressed with his death just as Costner should have been more distressed when he discovered his dead son. The deaths felt trivialized to the point of distraction. Expand

The movie is well made. Not a shocker since Kevin Costner is in it. However, if youve ever lived around trashy white people, this will trigger your PTSD. At least the ending is good. It's violent.
