A good movie but lost some of the magic from the first movie. To me the best thing about the first movie was the chemistry between the kids and I didn't quite feel that with the adult actors. Which is weird because I am big fans of all those actors.

Will we float down to the theater for IT: Chapter 2?

Welcome back to Derry… I mean welcome back to Stream to Big Screen. This week we have before you a review of Stephen King’s IT, Chapter 2. IT2 is the sequel/second part to It (2017). With a star-studded cast featuring James McAvoy as Bill, Bill Hader as Richie, Jessica Chastain as Bev, and Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise, the movie is not lacking for acting talent to finish up the revamped horror classic. Speaking of revamped, I do recommend watching the original It (1990) and/or reading the best-selling novel (1986). Those of you that take that challenge, please comment and let us know how this version of It compares to those versions. For those of you living under a rock, we’ve included below the trailer to freak you out in preparation for the movie.

IT2 does some things very well. I really enjoyed how the story was told. I didn’t read the novel, but I’m sure it gave the movie crew a ton of material to expand upon and visualize. And boy did they take every liberty with those. Nonetheless, I often found myself glued to the movie and not taking my eyes off of the screen. The writer and director worked well together to really dive deep into the emotions and fears of each character. On top of that, the writing did a great job of keeping the comedy and comedic relief through the movie, just like the original. IT2 stayed true to the original in those facets, which I appreciated, but it found a way to be it’s own as well.

Next, the cast did a really good job channeling their younger selves and matching their adult selves in the original. The main cast that I mentioned above, fit so well. I couldn’t imagine the movie without them (If you’ve seen the movie, comment on a couple actors you think might have been good replacements).

BUT THE GLARING ISSUE WITH THIS MOVIE IS THE LENGTH. I mean the original movie was told in a marathon,3 hours and 7 minutes, but included both child and adults halves. IT2 alone was 2 hours and 44 minutes of only the adult portion of the novel/movie. I understand the producers grabbing at money by splitting the movie but can we think about the consumers/viewers at all. Nearly 3 hours for half of a story is unreal. The director definitely could’ve shortened this movie by 30 to 44 minutes. There seemed to be endless amounts of flashback scenes or hallucinations from the past. While they were all good to watch, I would’ve preferred them to just shorten the movie instead.

The only other issue for me dealt with the scares in the movie. There were a few really good jump scares in the movie. The problem for me is that I felt the movie didn’t give us anything new to be afraid of or fear. On one hand, I could praise the consistency and continuity to Part 1. On the other hand, I would’ve preferred a surprise or more originality. On top of that, I can think of at least 2 scare scenes that elongated the movie unnecessarily. Those could’ve been taken out and no one would’ve missed them AT ALL.

Lastly, it bothered me that the film didn’t dive into Mike’s mental state as a pre-teen like they did the others. They mention his issues in passing but it seemed like each character had a dedicated 10 minute deep dive but he was forgotten. It wasn’t a huge issue for me as it didn’t really occur in the original movie either but with all the liberties that were take, they could’ve done the same for his story.

Long story short, of course this is a movie you should see in the theaters and judging by the first 3 weekend sales (171 million), you already did. The issue is that this movie is way too long for no reason and a lot of the scares lack umph because they are too similar to Part One. Nevertheless, the cast, suspense and the laughs make It: Chapter 2 the perfect matinee movie, if you have free time and a must see Halloween season stream.

The Stream: The movie is definitely about 45 minutes too long.

The Big Screen: The comedy and scares keep you going the whole time.

The Final Bill: This movie is way too long but quite entertaining.

While it was an enjoyable film, the first one was definitely the superior. The scares weren't as effective, and it focused on adult drama for some of it. It's good, but not as great as the first chapter.

There are some beautiful set pieces, practical effects, and imagery...but there's also Bill Hader (who | normally love) cracking unintentionally hacky jokes and giving like 40% to his dramatic scenes. There is an epic story being told...but there's also the same three horror scare patterns repeated for the whole long runtime. There's themes of childhood trauma catching up with you despite repression...but there's also an incredible amount of reused footage from the first film in the form of unnecessary flashbacks.

I wish this was an 8 episode miniseries. It would actually be digestible in that form and have the potential to be properly fleshed out. 2h50m is WAY too long for a popcorn horror movie like this. There's so many good pieces here. Way more than are required to solve this puzzle. Because of that, you get some pieces from other puzzles jammed in where other pieces should be. And the film suffers for that.

At least one hour too long and one of the most cardinal of sins considering the genre, IT is boring. If you have seen the trailer you have seen the most interesting stuff.

The only messed up stuff which made me uncomfortable is the hate crime at the beginning.

What is appealing to IT is the strange material. I remember reading the book chapter when Bev meets IT in her old home and it was freaking disturbing (it involves IT saying he would like to eat Bevy's private parts), considering this is an R rated movie they should have put this is in to at least have something memorable. This is by far the most expensive horror movie ever made but it all falls flat. The first chapter was not great but atleast enjoyable and has at least some content that is interesting to watch. The ending is just straight up cringe. There are other really dumb scenes, which are intented to be funny I guess? Even though the book is a strange and often tedious affair I think they could have gone in more creative directions.

The movie retained the somewhat even amount of horror, suspense and comedy that the first movie had, which I appreciated. Something else they did extremely well was casting the exact correct adults to play their respective roles: The adult versions of The Loser’s Club look appropriate to their child counterparts. The adults also do an excellent job portraying their characters like adult versions of their child counterparts. The best performance of the film HAS to go to Bill Hader though, he was so funny! I do however, feel like there were some issues with the film.

IT... WAS...... LLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOONNNNNNG! The middle of the movie kind of felt like a huge drag to me, mainly because it was so predictable and it felt like it was just going off some sort of check list.

Also, there was SO MUCH CGI!!! The CGI was especially noticeable with the flashbacks to The Losers Club: They had to use CGI to make them look younger since the child actors aged a bit since the first movie and it's REALLY noticeable with some of the kids (especially Richie).

They also lose a **** ton of points for having Mortal Kombat in the arcade! They were kids in 1989, and Mortal Kombat came out in 1992… C’mOn, GeT wItH tHe PrOgRaM!!!

All gripes aside, this movie comes out to be a win for me. They may not have used a certain entity from the book to help defeat Pennywise, but the movie would probably have to be a trilogy if they included said entity. There are small rumors floating around that they MIGHT do a prequel about Pennywise’s history on earth… Which I would totally watch!

Some parts are sometimes leading you to confusion where you sit clueless to what´s going on such as the ending to a small degree. Despite being almost 3 hours long it was one hell of an emotional rollercoaster ride, from the first appearance of Pennywise to the end of the movie. The horror factor was much higher than the first movie despite there being too many jumpscares to the point where you win $10 because you bet that the next cut will be a monster that pops up. Other than that, the horror otherwise is much more improved with different techniques, from psychological to straight out hell. Expand

Right from the start, I have to mention CGI, which is really terrible in some scenes. As for the story, it wasn't downright bad, but not quite good. The characters are no longer children and they are adults, and this is, in my opinion, the main minus of the film, because not only did I get lost, who is who, but most importantly, some of the magic that the previous part offered us has disappeared. If I should praise anything, then flashbacks, where the main characters are still children. If the whole movie looked like that, maybe it would be much better. Unfortunately, this is not the case and for me it is only an above-average horror. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Imho IT suffers from the same disease running amok in modern showbusiness, all professionals being replaced with producers family, people raised in money with no education or real world experience. Closer to scamming than to providing quality entertainment. Most SK novels are commercial and easily screenable, but IT has a more complicated background universe (or multiverse, since it runs on several novels). It wouldve taken some work and/or talent to screen it or explain it. The old miniseries did a top job reworking the creature in those aspects, simplifying IT to a physical arachnoid monster using fears and desires and projecting illusions to draw prey and eat it. In the modern movies they simply don't know how, when, what to do with the concepts, nor at least to make horror movies, not to speak of recreating the IT universe. Yeah 1920 telegraphed to get the jumpscreamers back. Without the context, most scenes lose any sense. Like the whole ending with the 'makebelieve' stuff. We got 2 scenes trying, the whole cavern being it and a 'stream' linking the deadlights to the physical projection. How tf can they release that with half cooked ideas.. And fmaking believe the monster that he's dead... well don't try this at home on real evil kids... SK said it himself, the ending is bad. But hey he sold the old bike for a lot of money. Amazing performance by Bill Skarskard though Expand
