Almost scene by scene I felt like I had seen it all before. And story-wise there's not much to go on - it explains nothing well enough to think that they "killed it" better than they did in the first one either.

I was quite bored halfway through. It is soooo long!

Effects are great and there's some decent acting here and there. Other than that, it was a snoozefest.

Nearly three hours of me not caring about a single character in the film and it's the sequel to a picture which I actually liked a good bit. That takes some doing.

Bill Hader and James Ransone really steal the movie with great comedy and pitch-perfect representations of their child counterparts. The rest of the cast is pretty solid as well, although Bill Skarsgard's Pennywise gets noticeably less screen time this around. The movie's central problem comes from its insanely bloated runtime, as the film runs nearly three hours and it sure feels like it. With better direction and a better editor, the film could've been easily around 2 hours. The ending as well feels cheesy and ironic considering a running joke in the film. In addition, much like the first part, the horror is mostly cheap jump scares with a couple of scary visuals. Overall, It: Chapter Two is a film with good comedy and casting, but poor plotting, mediocre horror, and a ridiculously bloated runtime make it a mediocre experience overall. Expand

Two big "whys", among the others:

Why did Eddie react in that funny way when stabbed in the mouth? I mean, it's not a Ben Stiller movie, it's IT!

Why do we need humor in every scene, even in the most intense ones? Someone wrote it's the "Marvel Syndrome" and I agree: this was meant to be a horror movie based on an amazing novel!

By the way, in this movie not even jump scares managed to scare me...

I found most of the child actors rather annoying, not to mention they made it feel like a wannabe Spielberg movie more often than not, and the scare attempts felt far too forced and in-your-face for my liking. So I proceeded with caution going into this film with my fingers crossed that the adult cast could help bring something new and fun to it, and while the likes of Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, etc. all give great performances and are definitely much more bearable than the kids, unfortunately the same scare tactics are in place in this film as well. Jump scares you can see coming from a mile away are plentiful in this, and I almost always felt like I knew what was going to happen next. Furthermore, that hit or miss de-aging technology was used for the kid actors during many flashback scenes, and it looked quite spotty to me often times. And while it didn't necessarily feel long, it definitely was long, pushing the 3-hour mark. Overall, if you enjoyed the first 'It', there should be plenty to admire about this one, such as the spooky atmosphere and great performances from the cast, but if you're like me and you weren't won over by the first film's style and scare attempts, this one likely won't quite win you over, although I will say that it does wrap things up pretty nicely, and I'm about to state a seemingly unpopular opinion when I say that I did like this one slightly more than the first, but not by much. Much like the first movie, It Chapter Two has a lot of disturbing scenes, and none of them include Pennywise a.k.a. the only person to have ever been bullied to death.

The characters from the first movie have grown up, and have all forgotten what happened in the town they grew up in. All except one dude who lives in an attic above a library, who has been preparing for the return of the killer clown. And from that point on the story is pretty much the same as chapter One, with the exception that main characters can die now.

What's most disturbing is the brutal way people in this town treat each other. In the intro of the movie a gay couple gets beaten halve to death for no justified reason, and one of them even gets thrown into a river from a bridge to drown. What the hell is wrong with these people? Pennywise comes across much nicer and even less gruesome compared to these hillbilly psychopaths.

The story takes its time to explain the main characters, and the pacing becomes rather slow and boring halfway through the movie. None of the encounters with Pennywise really strike a scary tone, and the final showdown is very underwhelming and incredibly stupid. The movie is over 2 hours long, which is way longer than is deserved.

While the first movie wasn't memorable but did entertain a little, i see much less value in this movie. I give this movie a 5/10. It's an underwhelming movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "It: Chapter 2" is finally in theaters and people can now watch it... brave people. Not just brave because of the silly jumpscares in this movie, but also because of the movie's runtime, which is... yep, it's long, repetitive and quite unnecessary in many parts.

If I were to choose a scene from this movie that I felt was completely redundant to the overall plot of the film and remove it... we would get a 90-minute movie. That illustrates how the sequel of the remake "IT" felt to me.

Look at the character of Bowers, for example. I thought he died in the last movie. Why is he in this movie? To create more jumpscares? Usually, with characters like him, he would be what we call "plot device". He was a... what, scare device?

The scene with the little girl being eaten? Scary, but what's the point of that scene? Pennywise likes to eat children? We already knew that from the first film!

The cast is pretty good (with Bill Hader being outstanding) and Bill Skarsgård does a brilliant job, once again, as Pennywise. The cinematography is passable, not as good as in the first movie.

There are some entertaining scenes, but I felt as though in the second half of the movie they couldn't help themselves but to throw jumpscares in every scene, which made it more predictable as the film went along.

The charm from the first chapter is mostly gone. The sequence of events throughout this movie is very haphazard - especially in the beginning. The momentum loses its way towards the end and quite honestly, I wasn't expecting the exposition in some scenes.

The standoff is very disappointing, but the performances are solid enough to overcome it.

Did "IT: Chapter 2" float?

Yes... slowly.

I was concerned IT ChapterTwenty-seven years later, Pennywise is back munching on children. The losers club, now all grown up and living very successful lives, they must keep their oath and return to Derry to deal with the terrifying clown. I was concerned IT Chapter Two wouldn’t hold up against Chapter One and unfortunately that proved true. IT Chapter One wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I loved it and I felt it was a terrific adaptation of Stephen King’s IT. The bar was high and Chapter Two really doesn’t reach that standard.

There’s a lot I liked about IT Chapter Two but it has a lot of problems. The chemistry between the young losers club wasn’t replicated with the adults and although there’s a lot of humour and banter between the adult cast the result is a mismatch of genres. On the one hand it’s trying so hard to freak you out and frighten you at every turn but there’s so much comedy stuffed in at the same time I’m not sure what it wants me to feel. I ended up laughing way more than I should have. So yes it’s funny and entertaining but scary? Far from it.

The CGI De-Aging of the young losers club was also a little distracting. Yes I know they’ve aged since filming IT Chapter One but a lot of these additional flashback scenes felt like they were desperately trying to cling to the success of Chapter One. We loved the coming of age aspect of the first movie, the genuine relationship between the kids and Chapter Two doesn’t have that element. So what are you left with? Frights and grotesque set pieces. That’s what you’re left with and believe me when I say the frights are endless, it felt like in order to ramp everything up they just added as many frights as possible. This is only made worse by the film’s lengthy running time. Yet despite being 2 hours 49 minutes it still felt rushed. How it managed to feel both rushed and dragged out at the same time I’ll never know. There are a couple of pretty horrifying scenes, but aside from that this film just didn’t feel scary. I don’t have a problem with horrors using jokes or humour to alleviate some of the tension, particularly if it’s coming from a character you’d expect. Richie “Trashmouth” Tozier for example, yet so many of the scenes feel the need for a joke the whole cinema was laughing and you’re left with something that barely feels like a horror movie anymore.

Bill Skarsgård’s spine-chilling performance as Pennywise is just as scary as before, these movies would not have been half as successful if it wasn’t for that casting choice. Skarsgård is without a doubt the best thing about this movie. I am a little disappointed as I loved the first part so much, but IT Chapter Two will still entertain you and well worth the ticket price. Assuming that is you go to a cinema that actually has a certain set of standards and not the usual nonsense that goes on in an Odeon cinema. Leaving the lights on for the first ten minutes of any movie is unacceptable but a horror especially is just plain annoying. You can feel Andy Muschietti has a great respect for the source material but overall it didn’t have the same atmosphere as IT Chapter One. A horror movie with more laughs than scares, recommended for all you Stephen King fans.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't actually know what to think about the movie. In the cinema, I actually really enjoyed it, although there are little-to-no scenes that actually have suspense apart from one or two. Now that I'm looking back on it in hindsight, I realise some of the decisions in the film make less sense.

This film is a huge CGI-fest. I'm pretty sure there's more CGI in this film than actual real sets. It is incredibly loud, fast (during scary scenes), and sometimes over-relies on loud noises and jumpscares. The screening I saw was huge, so much so that it looked similar to that of a university lecture, and I noticed about five people left during the film.

I found myself, and the audience, chuckling at one or two jokes. Some of the comedy is genuinely funny in my opinion, but it didn't manage to get too many smiles or laughs from me. But it must've been funny as people were laughing. It does capture, to some extent, the cheesiness of the 90's adaptation, but it is great in making it modern. Some of the things I personally disliked about the movie was the abundance of comedy. While I like the comedy, there's just too much. There's so many scenes that are horrific and in the next scene the characters are laughing and joking about as if nothing happened. The only person who actually acts as a human would throughout the film is Bev, who seems actually traumatised by the sheer horror of a supernatural threat. The rest can be ridiculous sometimes.

Another thing I absolutely despised and found myself laughing at was the ending. The "Eater of Worlds" or whatever It calls itself, this terrifying, child-eating, shape-shifting, supernatural extra-terrestrial gets defeated by being belittled. Yes, literally. They literally say things the equivalent of "You're a poo-pee head!" to It and it turns into some jelly thing. WHAT.

Anyway, yeah. Good at some things and bad at others. I do feel it does a lot right, however because of the comedy and lack of suspense throughout the film, I cannot deny how it takes a lot of its effect away. A shame, I really liked the first It despite its flaws, but I was expecting a lot more than a CGI ****

The previous is mentioned because of the characters do not have the same charisma that characters' representation from previous movie had. The actors do not finish to fit in the characters, creating a poor connection between their characters and an easy disconnection with the plot. Besides, some elements such as the scenography mixes the "current technology" with an old context during the movie that do not represent totally the correct scenography. The movie has good moments, but there are others that are totally cliche and predictable that takes away surprise and it is simple to know what is going to happen. It is a correct movie, but worst than the previous one that was very good.

The long-awaited sequel to the successful new adaptation of Stephen King's popular novel has finally arrived and the truth is that it's a film incapable of responding to the expectations created.
It's still one of King's best adaptations although considering that the level of these is always quite low, the bar of quality wasn't that high.

Like the 90's miniseries, this sequel faces the same problem when in the story it's time to tell the new conflict that now involves the characters as adults.

The children's story works very well because the story is built on something very basic and is something we can all relate to: Fear.
IT is an entity that transforms into their greatest fears and that's something that whithout a doubt everyone experienced as kids, so because of that everything flows better and that's why the first film is in most ways superior to its sequel.

It's ironic to think that a film that lasts almost 3 hours has a problem with its duration and at the same time it doesn't. I know it sounds strange but I say it because the duration doesn't feel heavy.
The film in a way despite the imbalance that it has and the huge ups and dowsn with the rhythm, it manages to remain stable. Unfortunately, the filling it uses for the gaps isn't really satisfactory. You could cut a lot and there would be no problem with the story.

A huge problem for me is that the film uses flashbacks too much and this is annoying because we are seeing once again that what evidently worked with that fear was when they were kids and problematically that fear no longer works in the same way when they're adults, therefore the film returns several times to them being kids and that's a serious obstacle because if we needed to see once again the horrors they experienced as kids then why do we had the first film in the first place?

It's for these reasons that It: Chapter Two is not so functional.
The film is well made, Andy Muschietti takes advantage of what he has despite the fact that his cast doesn't really have chemistry and also that on this occasion he uses too much jump scares which is a shame because this time Pennywise no longer feels like that scary character of the shadows with the exception of the scene in which he murders the girl in the baseball game. With Bill Skarsgård I have no problem. The others, frankly, don't seem to be so interested and that includes proven actors like James McAvoy Jessica Chastain and Bill Hader but at least they do enough.

Is worth it? Yes, personally I think so. It's not superior to the first one but if you saw it, well this is the end of the story, you can give it a try. Nothing remarkable but sufficiently entertaining.

As an extra there's something I must mention and it's because I've been reading that a lot of people is saying that you should read the novel and no, you shouldn't do it, unless you want to.
And I'm a huge fan of Stephen King but to watch a film based on some novel, regardless of the book or the writer, you don't need to read the book before watching the film because if so then you're saying the film is unable to support itself without the book. You should understand they're two very different narrative means.
The book exist for a reason as well as the film, know how to separate both.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It: Chapter 2 was a slightly disappointing follow up to the first one. While it stays true to it's source material, which is one of the good things, is suffers from poor pacing and some minor writing flaws. There is such a thing as too much humor, especially in horror, while the first excelled at placing humor in the right places, but more importantly, keeping it out of places it shouldn't.
This is partly where "IT 2" fails. In my opinion, when you see the villain at his weakest point, you really shouldn't be going for a laugh. The audience in my theater was laughing, which I'm sure want the goal of the director, but the humor that got forced in Durning the climax really affected the third act as a whole.
There were also a few scenes that had absolutely no point if being in the movie other than to pad out the runtime (Which is 2.5 hours). I can distinctly remember one scene that dragged on for at least 3 minutes longer than it had to be.
Unfortunately, the 2nd installment couldn't live up to the first, not only in the things listed above, but also the true horror factor of the movie. It's not really that frightening of a movie, sure there are a few jump scares here and there, but jumpscares add nothing to the scariness if there isn't some true horror behind it.

Digging its own hole, the story tries to revisit the same set pieces with a catch that the characters are "new", unfortunately we are not.

It Chapter Two

Muschetti's second and hopefully final swing at this Stephen King's classic novel is one big homework. The only advantage in the director Andy Muschetti's corner is that we love this subject. It was a hot topic and will stay a hot topic. Also not to forget, King is the source here, and for someone who hasn't gone through that heavy, heavy book, the character arcs and the mythology might fascinate the viewers. But if the novel is taken into account then this looks like a shady commercial rip off of something malevolent that is poorly mimicked into a bad joke. If that was the point of applying the CGI make-up then get ready for an entertaining night.

Another thing I'd like to mention is the elaborative nature of the script. It is obsessed on giving time and space to each character resulting it into a long separately sketched horror show that is clearly not worth the scare it wishes to forge; call me old fashioned, but I am one of those who doesn't believe in scaring people with visual effects, nothing gets me like witty practical jumps.

Now, this also brings out the inadequacies of the assembled pieces that never for a second floats. I stand by it, I still haven't found the replacement of Steven Soderberg's smoothness on projecting a multi-starrer not-a-film-but-a-trilogy. The "barbaric" theme pops out every now and then in the film. I mean the grievous behaviour of the film. The cruelty as an excuse for the screams is a good idea. Maybe, even a great one. But it is the irrelevancy in the scene and probably the unfathomable necessity that the makers find to justify the characters' trauma, is largely off putting that puts it in a trial of questioning of (IT)s existence.

The point is that they didn't put much effort into this film, the same goes for the acting. Bill Hader was good, that is it. Expand

Part 2 isn't even close to what the first movie captured. You know people can't be believed when they don't like the first movie which made almost 800 MILLION world wide and received a 90 average on rotten tomatoes and meta, and part 2 only opened to under 80 million.... it will not come close to part 1's success because that movie was perfect. Heavy on low-effort jump scares. Some of the CGI was bad and/or weird. I think it missed the mark compared to the source material but it's also a weird one to flesh out on film because it's such a wild story. Cinematography was decent but I think the first part was better in that respect. Acting was fair but nothing that really impressed me. I feel Skarsgård was underutilized and was turned into quirky jump scare material when he could have offered more to the role - likely not his fault as that would have been decided by people above him. Set design was decent. Audio was standard jump scare bass spikes with nothing memorable in terms of a score. Felt like standard pop film theater bait riding off the popularity of a classic movie and book. Some parts were decent, some of the humor was alright. The movie had potential but literally nothing about it was truly scary. Expand

Pennywise doesn't feel as threatening, the characters doesn't seem too terrified. Yes, some scenes are a little disgusting therefore they only delivered well in the weird and gross-outs, but not so great in both horror and terror.

Character development was dull, they aren't so likable like they did as a teen. Everyone was so gloomy and anxious throughout the film, not even a quality time spent with each other. Once a character tries to joke it turns out awkward and cringey. Oh, and the scenes are so hollywood cliche it hurts, the final showdown for example.

Pros huh? You get a better, cooler looking Pennywise, and **** just got real with this entity. A satisfying ending nonetheless.

Wasn't dissapointed and I'm glad I watched it rather then spending my entire life in curiosity. Sorry Warner Bros, it's a 4 from me, to Pennywise.

However, the movie is neither particularly interesting or scary. The plot is kinda all over the place, and it feels like exact same thing is happening on repeat for about an hour and a half. The characters split up, and we see them walk around alone, before a predictable (not scary or very well animated) jump scare happens. The character gets away, then rinse and repeat with all of them until the climax of the movie. There was one scene i love that i wont spoil, but it was certainly in the camp of "fun" over "creepy". unfortunately this film doesn't hold up to its fantastic prequel. 6/10 - good scenes, boring film :/ Expand

The CGI in this movie, is very bad. Laughable at certain moments, the climax is just so bizarre and makes the long run time come across as very irrelevant. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Talked about this movie over dinner last week with some friends after seeing it with Friend while our car was being serviced. I mentioned that I had spoken to a friend who’s gay about what he thought about the scene at the beginning of the movie that has garnered some criticism for its callous, unresolved milking of real life “gay-bashing” for shock-effect. I said at dinner that the kids-turned-adults had successfully beaten It but no one in the film could beat homophobia for some reason. But this friend had actually liked the symmetry of the beginning and the new relationship between Richie and Eddie created for the film.

The day I went to see the movie I talked to the person who works in the front office of my building and she said it was 1) too long (at nearly 3 hrs) and 2) the “fight” at the end went on forever. When I mentioned that to Friend, he laughed and said, “I heard that the Losers essentially bully It into submission at the end. It became a running joke to lean into each other in the first two hours of episodic scares to ask, “How is this going to result in them bullying each other?” Even during the actual fight, when It turns into a giant lobster or whatever, it seemed like the Losers had a fairly well thought out, well-foreshadowed plan to entrap him in a small-ass crawlspace before bashing him in the head or something. Everyone keeps saying “It must abide by nature regarding whichever form It takes,” so it seems like it ought to eventually come up. When finally they shout down the giant monster in a cave within a cave within a house by rudley calling him a “clown,” it just feels a little… mean? uncreative?

Ultimately, Friend seems like he’s got it right when he said that It’s repeated failure to eliminate the Losers when they return to Derry makes It seem progressively more and more incompetent. It’s the Wiley E. Coyote problem AKA The Dalek Problem: a menacing character loses his power to scare gradually over time if he repeatedly fails to obtain his objective, which is necessary for their rivalry to continue. Probably the best scene is under the bleachers at the football game. It’s one of the moments that hearkens back to the creepy mouthiness of It in the first film, the chilling way It manipulates its prey, takes advantage of their kindness, and doesn’t fail in its objective.

Sequels don’t have to be facsimiles of the original, especially not ones that are explicitly 27 years in the future. So much of what made the first film work so well was that its iconic portrayal of the 80s in Derry resonated so well with movie goers hot on the trailer of Stranger Things Season One and Super Eight and all the rest of those kid-powered nostalgic homages in recent memory. Part Two isn’t nostalgic about anything, and that’s okay, but at the same time, it felt a little out of place, lacking pop culture references from the present and relying pretty heavily on flashbacks from childhood and inside jokes from the Losers glory days.

The scares lacked a meaningful referent, which we’ve talked about as a necessary component of any good horror film, which might not be so much a fault of the film as the source material. Colleague from work said that Eddie’s thing in the book was a fear of eyes (???), which seems like more a gross-out plot point than anything meaningful to child development. I can’t help but think that Cary Fukunaga’s brief stint as a collaborator and director of the first film, and Jeffrey Katzenberg’s involvement–however minimal–contributed to the diminishing quality of the sequel.

All in all, It 2 is a bit of a mess–and a long mess at that. Alex McLevy over at the AV Club suggests that the film works better as comedy than horror, which I think was actually one of the strengths of the first one in the series as well. I remember sitting in the audience on opening night and listening to people laugh out loud because the scene was so scary and the way that the child actors stood in as surrogates for the audience rode a nice balance between comedy and horror. I think adults don’t get as much leeway when it comes to snappy one-liners in horror films, especially if they’re known for their comic chops, so a lot of the jokes that would’ve been hilarious to watch a 12-year-old no-name pull fall flat when said by the likes of Bill Hader.

I’m supposed to mention that the movie appears to have upped the racism to a ten in a way that the book had more nuance, so I’m just going to leave that flaming bag of **** on your porch to crush underfoot when you are good and ready.

It’s an important lesson in life to learn that you can never recover what you’ve lost and the past always remains in the past, so go see this movie if only to feel that brief tinge of pain and regret at the fact that you aren’t seeing the original… reboot… we loved so much.

Unlike the first this film sports quite a number of issues that make this a lacklustre viewing experience. I will admit one of the highlights of this film was the acting. Each member of this charismatic cast puts on a stellar performance that saves this film from being an unwatchable experience. When members of the cast are interacting and reacting to absurd situations, thats where the film really shines. But unfortunately when this amazing cast aren't in scenes together the film really drags. It also doesn't help that the film simply is not scary. The film's over reliance on visual effects make every dramatic/scary scene look very unrealistic and hence making almost every single scary scene at times unintentionally hilarious. But the film's main problem which makes it a pain to watch at times is its extremely self indulgent runtime. Clocking in at almost 3 hours long, this film is so painfully slow and filled with so many unnecessary scenes that just pad the runtime for no particular reason. Overall It Chapter 2 is somewhat entertaining at times but just fails to offer you a movie worth your time. Expand

Stephen King films can be difficult to get right. There are some aspects of his writing which are quite hard to put to film, especially when it's a 1,200 page novel that contains a lot of lore that's impossible to condense it to even two movies. But he also has some of the greatest horror movie scenarios ranging from the goofiness of killer cars, the terror of being trapped with your most psychotic fan and of course a killer clown from space taking the form of everyone's worst nightmares.

Whilst chapter 1 of It wasn't able to include some of the more bizarre elements of the novel such as the ancient space turtle who created the universe, it instead focused on the battle for survival between a bunch of outcast kids known as the losers and an alien who wants nothing other than terrifying and eating them. Now chapter 2 takes place 27 years after the events of the first movie and the losers have all grown up and almost all have forgotten the horrors of their childhood. But when Pennywise reawakens, they are all called upon to make good of their promise to defeat the evil creature if It ever came back.

Though the film seems less interested in focusing on any plot and instead plays out more like a horror anthology film. Similar to the last film, the losers are separated through most of the films run time with Pennywise cornering them all by turning in to their own personal nightmares. This ranges from anything between being trapped in a hall of mirrors to encountering an old granny, at times delivering on a level of brutality that most films usually shy away from.

But in spite of the films increased budget, the scares aren't as effective this time around. There's nothing as visceral as the bloody bathroom or as frantic as Pennywise's monstrous form reaching out from a projector. Parly this is because of the absence of cinematographer Chung-hon Chung's who played a massive role in developing the nightmarish visuals of the first film. Also at 2 hours 45 minutes, there is a fair amount of repetition of the standard Pennywise formula. There's only so many times it's entertaining to see the same formula of one of the losers ending up alone, Pennywise jump scare and the loser running away unharmed before things start to get boring.

As for the characters themselves, all the new cast are all individually very entertaining. James McAvoy delivers with both emotional intensity. Jessica Chastain carries all of her characters trauma from the first film. And Bill Hader is an absolute treasure who's able to make anything hilarious. However as a group they don't share the same chemistry as their childhood counterparts, mostly because similar to the original TV miniseries the dynamic of young childhood friends is just more fun to watch.

And at the core of the movie once again is Bill Skarsgård's unhinged Pennywise. He's one of the few recent great movie monsters with an unsettling presence whenever he's onscreen, always moving in an unnatural twitchy way.

It's just a shame that Skarsgård is often only limited to being part of brief jumpscares and isn't given enough time, with the film favouring some more generic CGI monsters instead of just giving Skarsgård more time to deliver on some psychological terror. Overall watching It kind of feels like walking through a haunted house at a carnival. You'll get a few good jump scares and you'll have some good laughs, but not offering anything which is likely to resonate in any meaningful way.

The narrative structure of the new adaptation is flawed. In the original, made-for-TV movie (which I recommend over the more recent films), more backstory is provided early on in the movie, so that the audience knows everything that’s at stake. This makes the action that occurs when the Losers return to Derry seem more epic as a result. It also allows for more character development. The new adaptation crams too much backstory into the second film, so that the movie feels bloated and the impact of the backstories is muted. In fact, much of the backstory is simply left out of the new adaptation, or changed. In addition, while the CGI used in the new adaptation is often cool and exciting, it’s also often downright silly and not believable. In the made-for-TV film, there’s obviously no CGI (it was made in the early 90s); good, old-fashioned special effects are used, making all of the incarnations of Pennywise more believable and less silly. In addition, the made-for-TV movie is effective because it establishes a genuinely creepy tone, making Derry seem like a doomed place that Pennywise will haunt forever. The new adaptation just relies on jump scares, which can be fun, but also get old and fail to establish Derry as a forsaken, haunted place. Overall, the new It films are not bad, but I highly recommend the made-for-TV movie over them; it is a truer adaptation of the Stephen King novel, and does a better job of establishing a creepy, unnerving, ominous tone. “You lied and I died!”

Making us proud Georgie.

I re-watched the 1990 mini-series and 2017 remake last month in preparation for this movie in terms of judging in quality. The 90's version had it moments, but I find some scenes unintentionally funny where it reeked of early Stephen King adaptations. 2017 was surprisingly good and a massive improvement, but laid back on cheap thrills.

‘IT: Chapter Two’ was a tough act to follow up on after the monster success of the first and with the second chapter being the hardest to adapt. I thought the movie both succeeds and stumbles in parts. Although reflecting back makes it feel more like a parody than a serious horror movie. An epic finale that ended in a over the top fashion - with themes of childhood trauma and the idea of holding on to the past despite growing up with age are sprinkled through out. The loser club are all grown up now and returning home to kill IT.

Whoever cast the grow up version of the loser club deserves massive praise here, because it’s pitch perfect casting and I could definitely see the child stars growing up to be the adult stars. James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Jay Ryan, and Isaiah Mustafa were all great in bringing the more dramatic aspects to the film. While Bill Hader and James Ranson bring the comedic aspects, but not to say they weren't dramatic as well, even making me tear up at one point.

Bill Skarsgard was truly amazing as Pennywise. The physicality in his movement has a certain silliness that you would expect to see from a clown, yet predatory with his animal-like attacks with drool running down his mouth and eyes staring in opposite directions despite looking straight at you. I find the dancing clown incredibly terrifying whenever he becomes playful and kind to deceive children.

Andy Muschietti truly shines as a director when it comes to bizarre imagery and unsettling camera angles, while also capturing some real emotions through the lens. The opening scene at the bridge where a homophobic attack takes place was really brutal and starts the movie off strong - on par with the Georgie meets Pennywise scene in the first movie.

Despite the run time being nearly three hours long, but I can’t recall ever being bored. It moved at a even pace in my opinion. I guess a few scenes could’ve been cut as most of it is unused footage from the first movie. Although it would be difficult to cut scenes as everything follows up to the next scene and that emotional punch towards the end wouldn’t be earned.

Now for the issues:

Henry Bowers was completely pointless in this movie and was only used for jump scars. Same thing with Mike, who through out these movies has nothing to do and the important things he did in the book was given to different characters.

I didn’t like how Stan’s suicide was handle, because you find out he actually “sacrificed” himself to save the others.

Some of the humor didn’t always land, especially if it’s right after a tense scene where it kinda deflates the horror. At times I struggled to gasp what the film marker was going for in certain scenes. Is this scene suppose to be scary or funny? Both maybe?

I wish there was more practical work for the monster scenes instead of CGI, because at times it looked really terrible. The finale battle at the end could’ve been in a video game boss fight.

Overall rating: Not as strong as the first, but still enjoyed it. Still, let’s kill this f**king clown.

It is not bad either, at all, but leaves much to be desired in comparison to its excellent first part; his balloon deflates a lot, not so much but he floats very softly. It has some very good moments of tension l, quite raw and gore scenes, but in general it is a soothing hitter. "It" is not a clown, it is an evil entity that takes many forms and here they do not show it as such, in the first one it was well introduced but here they were limited with the character, they are still determined to only show Pennywise and do not show their true potential. Although the performances and the actors are very good, the "companionship" is not felt, only when there are flashbacks and they show them guys is when you notice that "brothers" atmosphere. Many times it is not understood why an adult is going to be afraid of something that feeds on your dreams and you already know that if you are not afraid of it, nothing will happen to you (of the children if it is understood, obviously) .The problem is the script and deepened to that the long duration that does not know how to build and spin the plot well; It has some scenes of other people's shame and also forced comedy. I liked Stephen King's cameo and the turtle references for example. I also liked the reference to Nightmare on Elm Street. Expand

I liked the first one. Although they were aspects to enjoy here, this wasn't the part two that I wanted.

The film keeps up with the first by having some very good scares and just being visually creative in general. This movie includes a couple of very inspired transition shots near the beginning.

The cast playing the adult members of the Loser's Club all do a good job. I know it's been said to death but SNL & Barry's Bill Hader is the best of them. However, credit should also be given to Insidious' James Ransone. This movie is definitely funnier than it's predecessor and Ransone does a great double act with Hader. They have great chemistry. Of course, Bill Skarsgård still steels the show. His Pennywise continues to be unsettlingly childish and inhuman.

The main problem of this movie is that it relies waaaay too much on flashbacks. A lot of people liked the kid actors in the last film. Given that the adult character portion of the book and the mini-series is generally considered weaker, I'm guessing that the creators got worried about focusing just on the grown ups. So, a good portion of the second act relies on flashbacks to never-before-seen scenes of the kids. I mean there is a lot of this. Except for Hader's RItchie, who never really got a personal journey last time, we're not getting anything new. (Plus, I really didn't need to see anymore of Beverley's creepy father.) The setup for the flashbacks results in way too much of the characters just wandering about without much development. The sequel is way too nostalgic for the first, even the adult segments do too much recycling of previous stuff. I didn't want any of this. When I learned that the adaptation was being split into two movies for each of the age groups, I was prepared and content to watch just the adults, and I didn't get that. There needed to be way more time to focus on the lives of the current characters. (Again the character of Mike Hanlon (Isaiah Mustafa from the Old Spice commercials) doesn't get a lot of screentime.) BIll's wife and Beverly's husband basically have cameos here. Both actually had roles to play in the book. I would have preferred they cut the flashbacks and focused more on those characters.

The movie includes the last one's flaw of going way too-over-the-top with the real world threats. They are fairly cringey. In the past I could rationalize that the human characters are so evil and/or one-dimensional because everyone in Derry is affected by Pennywise's evil. However, here we see someone from outside the town also acting that way. So, now I'm just thinking it's just a lack of subtlety on the creator's case.

There was a point where I was considering giving this a ranking one notch higher, because I did like the good stuff. But in the end, I realized that I remembered the parts that bugged me far more. Be forewarned that this is one of those movies where personal enjoyment will really differ.

+ Excellent sound design

- Some really awkwardly timed funny moments
- Excruciatingly long run time
- Every single cliché jumpscare moment in horror is present in this film
- Childish underlying theme
- CGI was kind of silly

With its really long run time, crummy CGI and cheap jumpscares, this was just another horror movie that will probably only be of interest to those that are heavily invested in the books or the original TV series. To me, this was more of a psychological thriller that failed to really develop any mature themes/undertones that could keep me interested, with little bits of horror tension mixed in here and there. Add in some really awkwardly-timed comic relief and you have IT Chapter 2. It wasn't all bad though, I quite enjoyed some of the misplaced comical moments, the over-arching storyline and character development tethered by the first film, and the atmosphere that was created during the movie's more tense and creepy moments. The acting was hit or miss for me, but for the most part, both the adult and child actors did a very good job of portraying their characters and distinguishing them from one another.

Overall, it is just another average movie that went on way too long. If you're fully invested in the series as a whole, then by all means, go see this. If you are looking for an end-of-summer/pre-halloween horror flick to pass time, maybe look elsewhere.

It’s the laziest kind of horror movie, the one that thinks 20 seconds of silence followed by an ear piercing noise equates to good horror. It’s so repetitive, so boring, so poorly put together. It boasts a great cast, two very well done (and short) Pennywise scenes, and a cool shot or two, but that’s about it. It’s an overlong mess of a movie that is almost saved by just how hilariously bad it gets at times. It definitely falls into the category of “so bad it’s good” films, with its awful effects, hilariously incompetent ideas for scares, and moments that straight up make no sense. Expand

Also, i enjoyed chapter 1 very much because its a great horror movie while the good horror scenes for chapter 2 were only in the trailers.(mirrors scene) I hope that if a third movie happens, it gets more in depth scenes with Pennywise himself because he makes the movie great.
I still want to see another iconic scene to happen like the one with Georgies death in the first movie.

Indeciso, emocionante(?) e entediante...

This blockbuster has by now pretty much run the usual course of time in theatres, but I do have just a couple of comments . . .

Stayed pretty faithful to the first movie, altho definitely stood on its own with its outrageous special F/X (can anyone enlighten me as to the significance in the scene where one of our heroes gets slimed in black oily vomit to the strains of "Angel of the Morning" for three seconds ?). Was there a crossover of producers and writers of other landmark horror flix like "Nightmare on Elm Street" or "The Shining", who took advantage of snippet scenes such as the marquee over the old movie house ? One super-obvious reference to another Stephen King hit "The Shining" threw in a couple of copy-cat scenes only seconds apart -- the "Here's Johnny !" face-in-the-door, followed immediately by flooding the toilet stall where Beverly was cornered with gallons of blood filling up the tiny space, as tho we couldn't get enough of that from the elevator scene in "Shining". Was that just cheap inspiration remounted for this reel-deal or was it intended as a surreal moment of film nostalgia intended to do a number on the viewer's already over-cooked brain ? At least this two-and-three-quarter hour horror fest ended on some notes of loving comradery of our united gang now all grown up, learning the value of loyalty and devotion to a cause.

Don't expect any tears of joys from the audience at those closing scenes. Just go see it for the fun and sensation.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie doesn't lack the necessary entertaining qualities of a good viewing. IT 2 is definitely worth experiencing in a theatre for the ambiance. That said, the movie is very jumpscare heavy. This gets kind of tedious after an hour and a half. I dont believe IT 2 has any replay value either, unless you are a huge fan of the recent installments and the story. There were also a few scenes of pointless violence against random characters with very little setup or explanation as to why these people were targeted. There was also no revisiting or conclusion to these characters stories, which is puzzling for a three hour movie. I still found the movie entertaining and worth the ticket. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. IT: Chapter Two is quite frankly a 'meh' movie, hence the 5 rating. This movie does fit well with the original writing of Stephen King, with some artistic choice of course. The casting of the adult Loser's club is fantastic, and the actors are fantastic at portraying adults with a wicked and twisted past. That being said, this is a horror movie, which means the intention is to create fear in the audience. I, as well as the group I attended the showing with, found ourselves laughing more at the movie than being afraid. One scene, in particular, you see old 'Mrs. Kersh' turn into a giant, naked freak of nature that is funny, and not remotely scary.
The real fear factor is supposed to come from jump scares, just like the first movie. However, just like the first movie, these scares are hardly concerning. If the viewer has seen any other movie with jump scares or has played a game with jump scares, they will already be prepared for the timing of the scenes. Ultimately the problem this movie faces is a feeling of unsettlement as opposed to fear. Watching Pennywise open his face like a banana being peeled inside out is interesting and unnerving, but by no means is it scary. Neither is watching Beverly drown in a bathroom stall filling with blood, which in many ways is more comedic than threatening. Perhaps the problem lies in the desensitization of society towards gore, but nonetheless, IT: Chapter Two ignored that problem, leaving a movie lacking in the scare factor it promised. The movie felt so fake to the audience that there was also a lack of immersion, which again takes the fear back another level.
Ultimately, this movie is well done from a casting perspective, as well as strictly from the story perspective. Unfortunately, the fear factor is taken away by a combination of age-old jump scare tactics, desensitization to gore, and a failure to immerse the audience.

There's themes of childhood trauma catching up with you despite repression...but there's also an incredible amount of reused footage from the first film in the form of unnecessary flashbacks.

I wish this was an 8 episode miniseries. It would actually be digestible in that form and have the potential to be properly fleshed out. 2h50m is WAY too long for a popcorn horror movie like this. There's so many good pieces here. Way more than are required to solve this puzzle. Because of that, you get some pieces from other puzzles jammed in where other pieces should be. And the film suffers for that.

At least one hour too long and one of the most cardinal of sins considering the genre, IT is boring. If you have seen the trailer you have seen the most interesting stuff.

The only messed up stuff which made me uncomfortable is the hate crime at the beginning.

What is appealing to IT is the strange material. I remember reading the book chapter when Bev meets IT in her old home and it was freaking disturbing (it involves IT saying he would like to eat Bevy's private parts), considering this is an R rated movie they should have put this is in to at least have something memorable. This is by far the most expensive horror movie ever made but it all falls flat. The first chapter was not great but atleast enjoyable and has at least some content that is interesting to watch. The ending is just straight up cringe. There are other really dumb scenes, which are intented to be funny I guess? Even though the book is a strange and often tedious affair I think they could have gone in more creative directions.

The movie retained the somewhat even amount of horror, suspense and comedy that the first movie had, which I appreciated. Something else they did extremely well was casting the exact correct adults to play their respective roles: The adult versions of The Loser’s Club look appropriate to their child counterparts. The adults also do an excellent job portraying their characters like adult versions of their child counterparts. The best performance of the film HAS to go to Bill Hader though, he was so funny! I do however, feel like there were some issues with the film.

IT... WAS...... LLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOONNNNNNG! The middle of the movie kind of felt like a huge drag to me, mainly because it was so predictable and it felt like it was just going off some sort of check list.

Also, there was SO MUCH CGI!!! The CGI was especially noticeable with the flashbacks to The Losers Club: They had to use CGI to make them look younger since the child actors aged a bit since the first movie and it's REALLY noticeable with some of the kids (especially Richie).

They also lose a **** ton of points for having Mortal Kombat in the arcade! They were kids in 1989, and Mortal Kombat came out in 1992… C’mOn, GeT wItH tHe PrOgRaM!!!

All gripes aside, this movie comes out to be a win for me. They may not have used a certain entity from the book to help defeat Pennywise, but the movie would probably have to be a trilogy if they included said entity. There are small rumors floating around that they MIGHT do a prequel about Pennywise’s history on earth… Which I would totally watch!

Right from the start, I have to mention CGI, which is really terrible in some scenes. As for the story, it wasn't downright bad, but not quite good. The characters are no longer children and they are adults, and this is, in my opinion, the main minus of the film, because not only did I get lost, who is who, but most importantly, some of the magic that the previous part offered us has disappeared. If I should praise anything, then flashbacks, where the main characters are still children. If the whole movie looked like that, maybe it would be much better.
