This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am taking off many points for this movie due to the fact that once again Disney pushes its' woke agenda into this film. I really wanted to love this movie but the politics in the movie really got to me. The cast was good and I enjoyed the cast but there were politics in the movie that really bothered me. Why can't they leave kids films alone? Aren't kids already confused enough as it is? Expand

I mean the first one was released when I was 3 years old, and I think I saw it for the first time when I was 9. So, almost 30 years later, what is Hocus Pocus 2 looking for?
I think it tries to survive on the basis of nostalgia, and this can be a great ally or an immeasurable enemy, and I think both results will be part of this film's outcome when it comes to the audiences. Old and new.

I for one found nothing to enjoy and therefore will omit its existence and, in any circumstance, will only mention the original. I guess that's my sin of nostalgia.

Instead of compelling interesting characters it's diversity and promoting "the message". They used the same old jokes and made all the men goofballs or mean ol racists lol. It's trash. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Meh. Can Disney just keep this a classic!? Literally if I could give 0 stars I would. This does not compare to the OG hocus pocus at all…no suspense, no drama, and no love story to follow. The OG was comedic, hilarious and had a love story to follow along with the music! This was just Disney trying too hard to "fit in" with the crowd and not creating an amazing movie like it should be. Come on…they had 30 years to write up a good story line. Whoever wrote this story line should be fired ASAP. This was such a boring disappointment and another Lightyear movie that was a complete waste of time, a waste of time for sure, and Disney tried wayyyy too hard to compete with "modern society" that it ended up biting them in the ass. I will never add this to my Halloween list of movies for the season. Such a waste and a disappointment. This movie is terrible. I really wish the Sanderson sisters studied how they were in the OG film and copied how they were in 1993. The OG had drama, love, and characters who were silly and awesome. They created suspense, excitement & a thriller that will forever be loved in the homes of many throughout the season. This 2022 version of Hocus Pocus 2 was such a flop and a disappointment…do not waste your time on this movie. Expand

Now the original wasn't a great movie by any means but at least the Sisters had some bite to them. They actually lured children and did some bad stuff (still very tame for three witches that eat children). In this one, it's like cats with no claws suffering from dementia and more of the same jokes from the first HP but x2. You know, witches that show up in a time period they don't understand except none of the stuff really wasn't anything that wasn't in the 90's era of the movie, automatic doors being one. Of course, the entire main cast was female Mary Sue's. I remember a time when guys weren't just a big doofus (mayor), a beyond believable stupid and bully jock (boyfriend) or a backstabbing snake (store owner). That's it, that was the male cast...they were all a bunch of terrible people. Heaven forbid one of the main three be a male that is semi-competent. Remember when Rey learned to become a competent Jedi with years of training and discipline? yeah, me neither. This movie suffers from the same placebo effect, powerful because plot calls for it. Now the plot was just as useless, it was just a lot of go here, do nothing, go there, do some more nothing, go back to starting point and talk about feelings. That was the entire movie. They focused on several plot items even though they weren't not important. Two that come to mind is they kept mentioning one of the girl's mom, Susan, multiple times. You never see her but she was brought up a lot. Then they focused on the shop owners black cat a LOT as a throwback to the boy turned black cat in Hocus Pocus 1 that helps them defeat the witches. At first, it was a fun little commentary but once they establish that it's just a normal cat it got stale by how much they focused on it. I could go on but there really wasn't any real plot to critique, exemplary of every modern day Disney show. There were a couple good chuckles, the Roomba's being one and the intro with the three young witches was entertaining. With that in mind, I kinda wish they just did a origin story instead of a direct sequel like what we got here. The three witches still did a good job, you can see they have slowed down a bit and have a bit of a hitch in their step but they still bring the best performances of the movie. Expand

Although I don’t like admitting this but the Sanderson Sisters probably should have stayed dead, instead they came back for a sequel that’s a heavy dose of nostalgia and not much else.

On Halloween night, during a full moon, two young women accidently bring back the Sanderson Sisters (again) to modern day Salem. They now need to find a way to stop the wicked witches before they feed on children and get revenge on the town of Salem. Yes that all sounds familiar doesn’t it? Well it should, because rather than try something new with Hocus Pocus it’s the same idea done again only worse.

Despite a very promising opening sequence featuring the Sanderson Sisters as children, Hocus Pocus 2 descends into an unfunny, heartless sequel that only reminds you at how much better the first one is, and that wasn’t exactly a masterpiece to begin with. It really is the exact same thing done again only with enough unfunny jokes stuffed into it you’ll either die of cringe or your eyes will roll into the back of your head and stay there forever. With the original there was at least the feeling that the Sanderson Sisters were a genuine threat to people but with Hocus Pocus 2 there’s none of that. They’re just blundering their way through Salem while not understanding how the modern world works….hilarious.

Sure it’s great they got most of the original cast back, Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, Sarah Jessica Parker. They’re all back including the fabulous Doug Jones as Billy Butcherson. Also added to the cast is Hannah Waddingham (yes you do know who she is, look her up) who I have to say was criminally underused. You don’t get Hannah Waddingham to only use her for five minutes. What a missed opportunity. The younger actors cast to play Winne, Sarah and Mary in Salem were spot on, that whole sequence was the best thing about this sequel and I probably would have enjoyed it if the whole film was like that. Why do a sequel if it’s just the same idea redone badly when a perfectly good origin story was right there? Madness, and another missed opportunity.

Hocus Pocus 2 completely relies on nostalgia and sure look it worked, I ended up watching it, and nostalgia always sells. But the story is weak, the jokes don’t land and the musical numbers certainly don’t work. Even with all that being said, the original Hocus Pocus was financially a flop at the box office when it first opened (seriously who decided to release it during the Summer?). It only gained its popular cult status afterwards and myself and many of you probably watched it every Halloween on TV for years. For that reason we all have fond memories of Hocus Pocus so who’s to say how popular this sequel will be in twenty years. The younger generation will probably enjoy it, and if it does indeed do well with streaming viewers don’t be surprised if yet another sequel appears.

There’s plenty of decent horror movies to indulge on this Halloween but if you need something a little less scary then you might be better off with the original Hocus Pocus instead. Hocus Pocus 2 is recommended for anyone looking to entertain their kids with a Halloween movie that isn’t going to give them any nightmares.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. All I can say is stick with the original for Halloween movie nights with the family. My wife and I couldn't even get half way through this movie without feeling bored. One positive aspect of this movie is the actresses playing the Sanderson Sisters, they did an awesome job as always. As for the rest of the cast I couldn't really care for them. But there is so much a cast can do with bad writing.
First of all what really just annoys me, that this doesn't feel like a movie about evil witches, there's no fear element that the witches are after everyone's children like in the first movie. NO, it's all about going after the Mayor who looks like a reincarnation of the Salem Towns Old Reverend. Just feels pointless. Also, you think in a sequel we would see the original cast of characters come back like Max, Dani and Allison, nope not at all.
I'm going to leave at this, for Halloween Movie nights with the family, stick with the original. I feel that Disney is loosing more and more creativity with these remakes and reboots.

The kid actors they chose for this aren't great and it just seems to Disney plush-ish and that's probably why it didn't get theatrical release. Disney know it's not great and anyone who grew up watching the OG knows this isn't even close or even on par with the OG, you can tell they were scared to get into all the stuff they did in the 90s. It's an horrible sequel that doesn't come close to the feel of the original.

Pointless and unfunny sequel
I really enjoyed the first hocus pocus film that released nearly 30 years ago. However, the 2022 sequel is not nearly as interesting or exciting as the original film or any other film. Everything presented in the film just seems very unnecessary and random. The song sequences feel like they were cut short and the special effects were underwhelming. The 3 main teenagers in the film felt thrown in and also very random and not a lot of backstory were given to them. I just couldn't find any meaning or reason to this film other than it was just made to get more subscribers for the Disney channel streaming platform. I don't recommend the hocus pocus 2 (2022) not worth the wait!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you’re a Hocus Pocus fan, DO NOT watch this film unless you want to be disappointed. I was seriously and surprisingly let down with this movie. I read the book & this movie had maybe 10% of the book’s content in it. The characters were all changed around. And the most disappointing part was that there was no mention at all of Max, Dani, or Allison. The main character was supposed to be Max & Allison’s daughter Poppy. And there was a strong teen lesbian love story involving Poppy that was basically ignored. This part offended me the most as a member of the queer/LGBTQIA+ community. I felt like the makers wanted to focus on the Sanderson sisters more and create the usual sugary sweet story of bonds of friendship being the most important thing. While true, it was not exactly what the book centered on. The only former characters extremely briefly mentioned were Emily & Thackery Binx. The book was darker but had a lot more action in it. Had Disney & the makers of this film stuck true to the original story (which is a must read for real Hocus Pocus fans) this movie could have been a spectacular success instead of the epic failure it ended up being. I recommend seriously skipping this film & reading the book instead to find out what really happened with the Sanderson sisters when they came back again 25 years later. Expand

The story is good but has some dull moments. The actors are average, some better then others. The action is more of a comedic effect, then action per say. And I think there was too much of that. The FX is just passable, which consist of flying scenes and lightning. The book and cat are the best bits. I actually like the two musical scenes, because they were brief and modern. And I wish there would have been one or two of them added. Because it was the most dynamic thing in that movie. All the rest didn't generated enough rhythm. I give it 62%, mainly for the young actors. Not a great film but entertaining to a certain degree. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie starts out strong with a bit of backstory on the sisters. Absolutely loved that aspect of the movie. The acting was good and the new characters rocked it. I wanted to give this movie a better rating, but I can't. As soon as the mayor comes on screen it starts to feel lazy. It feels like they slapped it together as quick as possible. The storyline lacks originality and overall the movie felt empty. Yeah the original was corny as hell but it was fun and hilarious. There was so much potential for the sequel to be a powerful comeback story. The amount of call backs to the original movie is overwhelming and distracting from the storyline. It pulls you out of the movie and back to reality. The musical numbers made me feel like I was watching a Broadway musical rather than witches casting spells and flexing their musical power. I was disappointed because I went in thinking that this movie was going to be insanely enjoyable, funny, spooky and ended up just waiting for it to be over. Expand

Not bad but super lackluster compared to the original!
It lacked sincerity and feeling. In fact, I didn't feel much of anything throughout except frustration. Whereas the first one made me laugh and cry the whole way through, this one was really ho-hum, except for the very end- and I only laughed once!
Like I said, there is a feeling of insincerity to this one. It's basically a parody of itself, whereas the original feels like a genuine classic. And a lot of the stuff in this felt forced and just annoying.
Also, no Max, Dani, or Allison in this one, and I was really looking forward to their return!
Glad I watched, but overall, a letdown and super lame.

It’s a big soup of nostalgia and I’m all here for it. Loved all about it, and the musical numbers are to die for.

This weekend Disney+ released the long-awaited/no one asked for sequel to Hocus Pocus, Hocus Pocus 2. Now, you probably know that this movie follows three young women who accidentally bring back the Sanderson Sisters to modern day Salem and must figure out how to stop the child-hungry witches from wreaking havoc on the world. But really who lights the black candle again?!? Let's see how this goes.

Of course, Disney gave a lot of nostalgic moments to work with. Disney was like how can we get parents who grew up on this movie and their kids to relate? Oh, I got it bring back a franchise from 30 years ago. Let's see if this hits and maybe we can make another kind of reboot movie. That's what we have here. We have Better Midler doing Bette Midler things as she did 30 years ago. Parker and Najimy doing the same thing but the sisters, even though similar to back then, have gained a new sense of self in the grave to match the sentiments of today's culture. Our young folks in this really didn't give us life like the original cast. I feel it may have been the writing that didn't really make them interesting or funny as compared to the first movie. HOWEVER, the real stars of this movie were the young versions of the Sanderson Sisters. The movie starts off so well with them that it's almost impossible to not enjoy the movie from that point on. Shoot, I'd almost watch a whole movie of the adventures of the young Sanderson Sisters. DO YOU HEAR THAT DISNEY?!

Long incantation short, this overdue sequel while losing some of its original magic still has the juice. Hocus Pocus 2 is a fun movie that lacks some creativity and originality. The nostalgia abounds and most likely Disney may be setting up some more for the future. Families should grab a bowl of popcorn and watch this cult classic sequel to begin their streaming Halloween movie season.

I think teenagers probably could’ve created a better storyline. And much of the film felt low-budget. More like a Disney Channel Original Movie than a Hollywood sequel. I think the creators also relied way too much on CGI over practical effects, and that was part of the reason this movie was missing that same spooky atmosphere from the first one (most scenes were filmed inside a badly decorated studio). Disney has gotten terrible at making movies. But that said, the Sanderson Sisters were the saving grace of this sequel. I was so afraid they wouldn’t be able able to capture the same “magic”, mannerisms, & quirks of their characters from the original. Seems like more & more sequels & remakes are getting phoned-in by the actors. But I couldn’t have been more wrong about this one. They were spot-on true to their characters. You could see how much fun Bette Midler, SJP, & Kathy Najimy had returning to play them, and it really rubs off on the audience. Is it better than the first one? No. But it’s also not a bad movie. Far from it! And definitely worth watching if you loved the original. Expand

But almost 30 years passed, the way of making movies changed too much, and more at Disney. And it clearly doesn't have that adult comedy with a hint of horror from the original. Not to mention the address which is different. But, I think the movie has many things to salvage: I found the prologue incredible, and the girls who played the young Sanderson sisters did an excellent job. The setting is quite good, the musical numbers, although somewhat disconnected from the plot, were entertaining. And the Sanderson sisters are taking over the show again. Instead of living off a style of movie that is clearly not going to come back, let's appreciate that they gave us a product that, although it doesn't live up to the original, is quite nostalgic and deserves at least to be given the opportunity. Absolutely awful. I don't know why, but I didn't expect forced modern agendas into the movie. This is just a movie of the time that slapped hocus pocus on it. Moreover, the tropes in it are not well done. It was like a flashy B-rated movie.

Its pretty much what you might expect - family friendly, mildly spooky on ocassion and with some amusing modern references and decent dialogue at times. I wasn't convinced the plot was entirely original but it's still relatively watchable and I imagine youngish kids would enjoy it for the most part. It's not exactly a scary film or a Harry Potter type watch but its got its moments I guess. I wouldn't exactly recommend it over many other films as such though, no. An ok film that will be enjoyed by some but not all. Expand
