Chronologically perfect, each scene and act plays at the exact time, with a perfect conexion, I wasn't expecting that kind of chronology from a superhero movie, but yes, I found it. Guardians of the Galaxy is funny, unpredicable, extraodinary and epic from the first begining to the great end, you'll never believe in a bunch of dummies, but you should, how they pass through situations is totally unpredicable, but they always pass.

This sense of "those bunch of weak guys will never defeat the most strongest person in the galaxy" is well used in all the movie, which gives you the confidence that maybe you'll need for a possible sequence. This nonsense group of a ferret, a tree, a silly but very strong men, a girl and a thief makes a connection with who's watching that is unbelievable, you start to like each one of this group, a nice connection that a lot of serious movie will never make.

The most unique thing to come out of Marvel in years. Guardians of the Galaxy is a blast that everyone should check out.
This new franchise has what looks like enough lore and unique creatures, planets and spaceships to rival that of Star Wars and while maybe not written as tightly as a Star Wars film, this epic is a blast to watch from start to finish.
The films main selling points are the characters and the visual design and universe the film is set in. Our 5 rag tag heroes are so crazily unique and absurd all bursting with their own personality that they flesh out the film themselves; and then added to them is a dozen different races and planets to make their universe exciting. How are these characters unique though? Well, if you haven’t seen the front cover let me explain all characters to you:
Firstly we have Peter Quill a.k.a Starlord, the human of the group. What makes him a quirky and unique character is that he was abducted by aliens in the 80’s and now roams a completely different universe. This comes with him quoting many 80’s film references and pop culture references that he is a hilarious blast to watch, along with his own quick witted personality and charisma. He also then brings lots of 80’s music to life that add to the feel and tone of this sci-fi epic.
Secondly, we have Gamora; admittedly probably the most boring of the group. She is a Green alien who wants to betray her master. Her character acts as the most effective assassin of the group who is very skillful but just comes across as a rather average moral anchor for the characters and potential love interest.
Thirdly, we have Drax the Destroyer. He looks awesome, but is the character with the lowest IQ, not understanding sarcasm, metaphors or anything a little more complex in the English language. He is hell bent on revenge and will stop at nothing to avenge his fallen ones. A simple plot device for him but his idiotic but devoted character makes up for it.
And lastly coming in a pair as they should, are Groot and Rocket; the wackiest bros to come out of Hollywood in forever. Groot is a humanoid like tree, who has regenerative abilities and knows only 3 words; “I am Groot”. He is incredibly tough and will not leave his friends behind no matter what. Rocket on the other hand is a talking racoon that was altered with experimentation and now has an obsession with making explosives and other weaponry. He is also best friends with Groot, and more the voice of the two, although he is a bit of a dick, but he is awesome. These two act as GOTG’s equivalent to Han Solo and Chewbacca.
After taking a step back and looking at the worlds these characters inhabit don’t be surprised if you’re impressed. The visuals are beautiful, with an incredible mix of practical and visual effects (Star Wars episodes 1-2 should’ve taken note) and they are all polished and sleekly made making them feel authentic. After watching the film you want to find out more about this universe.
The only downsides to this movie are the story and the script (at times). The story is a typical people band up together and put differences aside to save a world and a crazy bad guy goes mad with power and so wants to destroy it; nothing new here. Then also the script has a few too many plot conveniences and makes the speed at which all characters suddenly become devoted to each other a little unbelievable, but somehow the chemistry between the group still seems to work well.
Overall, this film is a triumph and well worth the watch. Chris Pratt nails his character and is easily the breakout star of 2014, all other cast members are great and the visuals and lore of this universe and enticing enough to have already warrant itself a sequel, which I’m sure we all can’t wait for.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am quite critical in general and I did not know what to expect from the movie. I was presently surprised by almost everything. There were some minor issues which made me not rate it at 10/10. But like I said they were minor issues.
The bad:
1. Not really realistic: Yes I know that I should probably not complain after seeing a ridiculous tree creature and a talking raccoon. That is fine but what I am getting at is how overpowered these characters were. Not only were they all masters of combat but they were invincible as well. After the prison escape the movie lost all the suspense.
2. The lack of "real ending". I know that they want to continue to release more movies but at least don't make it that obvious. I have seen many TV-shows and also movies where they wrote that there will be a continuation and then the show is cancelled or the movie was not financially successive.
3. The whole fleet at the end got destroyed, how did the same people manage to survive without a single scratch? One of the most annoying things there was. Not only were the heroes invincible but it seemed that all the "good" guys were also invincible for no apparent reason.
4. The buildup was quite fast, you got thrown into the action almost immediately. It is however good or bad depending on what you like. I would have preferred around 10 minutes longer buildup as it was the first movie in a presumed series.
The good:
Everything else. The actors did an awesome job. The whole story was very good. You got really invested into the characters and that is a good thing. Plenty of funny moments. The effects were also top notch.
It is ridiculous that this movie got a lower rating by the "experts" than star wars episode 7.

Marvel movies tend to be very hit or miss for me. I had never read the comics before so this was entirely new to me.

The movie was really good with some minor flaws that I can overlook. The characters were all very entertaining and had very different personalities from one another, and the interactions with each other was quite humorous as a result. The characters were full of wisecracks which was quite hit or miss. Sometimes it got a little tiresome and felt like a poor version of Star Wars. The main character, Starlord was very cocky and quite annoying at times. All the characters had their own baggage, and heavy baggage it was that they had to come to terms with. And of course they all came to terms with it at the end of the movie as it was wrapped up in a neat and tidy bow like Many Hollywood blockbusters. The main character even had a big change in heart and managed to put his selfishness aside to find something greater than himself for the first time in his life. This was pure Hollywood.

There were a lot of little plots going on and they could have offered a little more background in places so things would make a little more sense but then that would take too long. Overall they did a good job and even offered room for some of the main characters to have their own movies and have their past explored if Marvel chose to do this.

The villain was very imposing and intimidating, but a little too indestructible for my taste. Generally the henchman sucked at fighting and got easily killed. This is nothing new for comic book movies but it would be nice once in a while if films didn't take this route.

The visuals were quite impressive, and featured some exciting battle sequences but nothing too mind-blowing.

A little more variety in the races would have been enjoyable. Many of the races looked almost the same except for the skin color, and the races didn't seem to deviate much from humans in their appearance.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable movie, though far from a classic and it certainly had it's flaws.

Aunque puede ser por que a mucha gente le gusto el buen humor. Bueno, ¿esta película es una película de super-heroes con comedia? NO. Expand

Guardians of the Galaxy is another Marvel Studios film following the Guardians; Starlord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Drax (Dave Bautsita) and Groot (Vin Diesel) against the evil Ronin the Accuser (LeeGuardians of the Galaxy is another Marvel Studios film following the Guardians; Starlord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Drax (Dave Bautsita) and Groot (Vin Diesel) against the evil Ronin the Accuser (Lee Pace) to acquire the orb.

The best thing that Guardians have going for them during the whole film is it’s obscurity to the marvel universe with the audience. Most people know whom Iron man, Captain America and Thor are, however hardly anyone knows members of the Guardians of the Galaxy. This is played on with great affect during the film which allows itself to be humorous in some places. Additionally the film can be a little laid back and comedic due to this obscurity. It can be jokey in some certain places and doing so helps us enjoy the characters even more.

The cast themselves have done a brilliant job in introducing us to these unheard heroes. Each member has their own traits to them with all of them being a joy to watch. Furthermore due to each character having their own trait it allows banter to be bounced of each other again giving a more likeable appeal to the cast. All the cast mould well together making the Guardians a cohesive team which when together is a moment to see.

The one item that I wished they touched upon more is the backstory of some of the characters, especially Rocket Raccoon and Groot. It is touched upon during the film but not to a good extent where we know where these characters have come from. By developing their backstories we could have seen more character from Rocket and Groot and allow us to see how they came to be brothers in arms.

In all, Guardians of the Galaxy is a fantastic film in which sets a new era for the Marvel franchise. The story is brilliant since it allows these characters their own individuality, their own spotlight however when the time comes, when they are all brought together its magnificent. The characters all mould together extremely well allowing banter to bounce of one another directly causing a likable cast. Guardians of the Galaxy is a must see.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to admit. I had very high expectations that this movie would be better than The Avengers as what some people said. That's not the case at all. But just because it's not better than The Avengers or the Iron Man movies, it doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it.

I **** ENJOY THIS MOVIE.

I would say that this movie is much more entertaining than the Captain America and Thor movies. This is the movie that is worth my money without making me fall asleep for five minutes during the movie.

There were so many great parts of the movie that I can't list them all.

The cast did a brilliant job in their performance in the movie. I would like to say that this movie will make Chris Pratt a star and I am so glad he is going to do more movies like this. Chris Pratt's charm adds to his performance as Peter Quill aka Star-Lord. He has his charming comedy roots from his earlier works especially from Parks and Recreation which is why him playing Peter Quill is a great casting choice.

Bradley Cooper did a great job voicing of what would have been one of my new favorite superheros, Rocket Raccoon. I really enjoy Rocket Raccoon in the movie so much that I almost forgot Bradley Cooper is voicing him. He is a very good actor. He isn't nominated for two Oscars for nothing!

Vin Diesel also did a great job voicing Groot. Even though he said the same line "I am Groot" all over again in the movie, you can hear, feel and understand the emotions when he repeated the same line all over again.

I want to give credit to Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista for their portrayals of Gamora and Drax respectively. As for Zoe, I enjoy her as Gamora more than her as her character in Avatar. I mean, does anyone remember the characters in Avatar? As for Dave Bautista, I never expected I would enjoy a performance from a wrestler and his portrayal of Drax is great and enjoying to watch.

The supporting actor I enjoyed watching was Karen Gillian. It might be biased due to the fact I am a Whovian and I love her as Amy Pond. But her playing as Nebula is so cool and refreshing. I want to see more of Nebula on the sequel!

The characters they played have chemistry and they also have great character development even though the backstories are not quite elaborated. At this point, the team which I will call by their titular name is so great that if you ask me which Marvel Cinematic Universe team is better, it would be a tie between The Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy. They are both funny. They are both charming. They have great chemistry together. It's the hardiest nerd question I will have to face when the time comes.

I loved how there are themes to this movie. My favorite one is about dealing with loss which is quite thought-provoking for a superhero movie. Each of the team member lost something in them. Star-Lord lost his mother. Gamora lost her parents. Drax lost the family he loved most. Rocket lost his optimism because of the experiments he is forced to take in. Groot....ummm....I have no idea but Groot felt sad too. The way they dealt with their loss lead to their criminal activities but they dealt loss with hope as soon as they realized that they still have a chance in saving many people's lives. Another great theme is teamwork which is pretty self-explanatory.

The direction and the screenplay from James Gunn shows how much of a passionate nerd he is in this movie without isolating the non-nerdy audience. I love his take on the superhero heroes and the fact he is directing and writing the sequel makes me excited already.

The 70s-80s pop-culture references are awesome especially "The Legend of Footloose" part. I fear the day when Peter Quill comes back to Earth and learns the existence of Justin Bieber.

The soundtrack is unexpectedly perfect for this movie. This adds more to Star-Lord's personality. After all, he is the protagonist and he is the main focus of the movie. I will review the entire soundtrack in a separate review soon.

While not entirely better than The Avengers as what some people including myself hoped, this is a great, if not one of the best Marvel Cinematic Universe movies so far. I will watch this movie again as soon as it comes out on home media.

It has a perfect balance of drama, emotion, and humor. Any moment that starts to get too serious or treads on superhero movie cliches gets broken up by well-timed and clever humor, and moments that get too silly are often quickly grounded by dramatic events or serious threats. The score is great. The visuals are absolutely top notch with very crisp, colorful, and imaginative scenes. The characters are all enjoyable and complex with plenty of room for growth, and more than anything this film has a lot of heart. There are moments that are emotionally challenging or relatable to the viewer. There are moments the characters act in ways that seem very genuine to their character and unique among the genre. The action is great and well-coreographed, with lots of fun gadgets and gizmos to create unique styles of combat, though there are a few moments late in the film when the fighting starts to feel like generic stage combat on par with some of the Captain America fight scenes in his movies. I didn't expect this film to be so touching and honestly the Guardians are my favorite movies and characters of the MCU. This is easily the best Marvel movie to date at the time of its release. I am very much looking forward to the guardians' further adventures! Rocket is my favorite character of the MCU! Expand

Imagine my surprise when I began to feel a genuine connection to the movie (and yes, even to Rocket Raccoon, who is hilarious). The movie may not be striving for high art, but it is just about everything you could ask for from an action flick: all shades of humor, glorious special effects/cinematography, interesting characters, and even an interesting plot. It didn't quite have room for an interesting villain, but I still give it a 9 out of 10 for going above and beyond my expectations. I would happily watch it again. Expand

Del Toro‬ permeates Collector with pizazz yet again, whilst ‪Lee Pace‬ strives to make ‪Ronan‬ a grim intimidating character however Marvel still ends up making him another passable villain that might disappear as a hungry-for-desolation and power lout. We might cherish him as the Kree-ian who dared defy Thanos though!

‎Rocket‬: Words fail to describe this guardian. He's the life of the group and a true hero just with a filthy mouth. His pairing with ‪ Groot‬ is kickass! whilst Groot's our ‪Hodor‬ in disguise! He is packed with surprises! Not that Vin Diesel had much to say anything about it (you see what I did there?) ‎Gamora‬ the unfortunate adoption was good with the team. ‎Saldana‬ plays it fine. Bautista‬ is brilliant as the dumb ‪Drax‬ who's bent on revenge and getting his ass kicked and Stan‬! Go get a room man!

If you can't somehow watch this movie, just stop existing! :P

It is the best comic book movie of the year, maybe only a little above of Days of Future Past and The Winter Soldier. Marvel did take advantage of the little fame that the Guardians of the Galaxy had as a hero team, but also make them seem as a group of all time favorite characters. The visual effects are excellent, the casting was well-chosen and the soundtrack is a perfect combination of 80's songs that can easily be a short compilation album of the decade.

Chris Pratt is great as womanizer and sarcastic, Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana develops well as the serious killer Gamora, Dave Bautista is outstanding as the fugitive Drax the Destroyer and Bradley Cooper was the perfect choice as the voice of the funny and witted Rocket Raccoon.

The story has charisma, action and very funny moments that as a whole make an entertaining and very interesting film. Without mentioning its hints of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It wasn't funny enough to be a real comedy, or exciting enough to be an action film, or smart enough to be a drama, etc. etc. Another issue was that the two computer rendered characters - Rocket Racoon and Groot - stole every scene from the bland/irritating human ones, especially given a highly underwhelming performance by the actors. Last but not least the movie is incessantly peppered with songs that are highly dependent on taste - if you liked them then they probably picked up the film. If you didn't then it just made it all the more tiresome. Ultimately I wouldn't recommend Guardians of the Galaxy, though I suppose it might be okay for a Tuesday showing at a cheap theater. Expand

Great story, great transition from the comics to the movie, great acting, good cast and outstanding soundtrack, Guardians of the Galaxy is a 9/10 movie for being an unknown comic books that came to the theathers respectfully, it has some nice sort of comedy, some nice and bizarre characters and it comes with a distrust, a distrust that a bizarre group of a 2 thiefs, one tree, one servant and one strong men, but this distrust is surprisingly broken when in the end you realize that they actually deal with the situation, this is the kind of surprise that we don't see that usual in actual days movies, just outstanding.

I only went to the movie theater to watch "Guardians of the Galaxy" because of the MARVEL logo. This movie proved me this: never judge by the trailer.
Director James Gunn took a non very well known MARVEL comic book series and turned it into one of the best comic book adaptations ever. It has extremely well worked and intense actions sequences and the comedy dominates the movie, always with great references. The five heroes were very well developed and share hilarious scenes together. Besides, we have cliché in a lot of scenes, something common in this genre. I don't think there were new things that I noticed, but the jokes fell just as well the second time, and it was just as much fun to watch the actions unroll. Bradley Cooper's raccoon is voiced perfectly, and gives some of the funniest lines of the movie, particularly in his interactions with Groot. The visual effects and makeup were all interesting and original and really well done; it was neat to see people in red and green and blue, and I like that they didn't go to any trouble explaining history or dynamics, and leaving the audience to mostly tease out the relevant details for themselves. The ending was a bit predictable in its happy fuzzy feelings and sense of adventure, but it was entirely appropriate to the movie and it worked really well. Guardians of the Galaxy has some of the best aspects of the comic book movie genre in the neat, creative environment of outer space. Super fun. Expand

Pd. Groot was so sweet, loved him!

So Marvel can actually make good movies!!!!!!!!

Guardians of the Galaxy is great. This is a film that finally feels like its own thing. It's a film that does not require you to watch any other movies first, and it sure as hell doesn't expect you to have watched some TV show either. The film introduces its main character with an awesome scene of him going to get an orb while listening to "Come And Get Your Love". I immediately felt invested and the film has great personality and style. It also has way better colors than any of the Marvel films before it.

The film in every way feels like a superhero film. It's colorful, loud and one of the most visually creative films in a long time. The action was plentiful despite being a little bit of a CGI chaos, and I loved the characters and I'm seriously interested to see Galaxy 2 purely for them. Last time I felt that was maybe with Iron Man, and it was definitely refreshing after watching a Captain America movie. Even though I'm not that into Sci-Fi I still enjoyed this immensely. The pace is solid and keeps everything moving even if there are some exposition scenes, all the action is creative, the story is pretty good even though a bit generic and the characters are awesome, especially Rocket and Quill. Even the score was good!

Just like the first Avengers film, this was a film that had so many fun and creative moments that I just couldn't help but smile. I would've liked a bit more characterization for the villain because he kinda sucked in typical Marvel fashion, but the qualities easily outweigh the flaws.

ButUgh, get your pitchforks and torches out and get ready to find me and burn my house down but I thought this movie was just...okay. Don't get me wrong, it has it's funny moments like the 'pelvic sorcery' line got a good laugh out of me. But other than that all the humor seems to try and force it's way in rather than flowing naturally. A lot of the jokes either make me chuckle very slightly or just fall flat altogether and that's not what I expected. Every time someone told me about this movie they told me how funny it was, how smart it was, and how much fun it was, and it's possible that I had too high expectations before I watched it but even then it still was just decent. Now, I can't really comment on the characters as I haven't read the comic books and don't know how they were written but my god are they boring. Seriously, I enjoyed Bradley Cooper as Rocket but everyone else was so boring! Yes, even Groot! And the story was so rushed I watched it 2 days ago and I barely remember what happened. Also, spoiler alert here but the ending was SO cliche that it was just sad. And the beginning 5 minutes of the movie was just to serve a means to the end of the movie, nothing else. Overall, I don't think this is the worst movie I've seen but it's definitely overrated as hell and shouldn't be praised as much as it should. There, now come and kill me internet for not liking this movie. Expand

Happily, “Guardians of the Galaxy” proves that you don’t always need a bonafide costumed icon to produce a bit of save-the-world fun, even if the story is barely-there laser blast fare — Star Wars minus the mythology.

As an action extravaganza, every penny of the film’s lofty budget appears on the screen. “Guardians” is a gorgeous-looking film filled with over-the-top makeup and sets, some of it quite stunning. It doesn’t strive for a moody, rain-washed authenticity like some other superhero films, but rather a garish cartoony reality, vaguely reminiscent of director Luc Bresson’s sci-fi work and those geniuses of perspective and four-color visual hyperbole: the Marvel artists.

The story revolves around space scoundrel Peter Quill (played by actor Chris Pratt of the TV sitcom “Parks and Recreation,” on which he’s crafted a likable He-of-Light-Intelligence persona that he reprises here) and Quill’s attempt to recover a metallic orb containing an unworldly force just waiting to be harvested by half the baddies in the universe. Quill, abducted from earth while still a teen by pirate-like space mercenaries goes by the moniker “Star-Lord.” He’s grown into a punky rebel among these salty space dogs — prone to flipping off policemen, drop-kicking pesky space lizards and blasting his classic rock on a Walkman to liven up the soundtrack (a little too frequently, it’s a vaguely cheap trick).

Pratt has described his character as “Hans Solo meets Marty McFly.” I would have preferred Hans Solo meets … someone further out of puberty. Pratt’s Quill is almost too much a boy-child to generate real gravity as the film’s lead. He wields a mean stun gun, but he makes an awkward leader and his moments of genuine heroics get lost behind the joking. The film ends, but he never matures. Still, he’s a likable lunk and the carry-over of his “Parks” persona gives Pratt cred as the Peter Pan of the Forbidden Zone.

Zoe Saldana (Lt. Uhura in J.J. Abram’s rebooted “Star Trek” films) is his grudging new sidekick and presumed future love interest, a deadly assassin recently turned away from the darkside. Saldana works earnestly at her role and manages to provide some weight to the otherwise drama-light screenplay.

Professional wrestler Dave Batista is another member of Quill’s team of misfits. Saddled with the rather defining moniker of “Drax the Destroyer,” Batista provides some of the film’s best laughs as a humorless yet utterly forthright hulk. He’s Mongo from “Blazing Saddles” decorated in a paisley of ritually applied scars atop real-life muscles that outshine the special effects for pure astonishment.

The final members of the Guardians are two CGI-rendered concoctions voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel. Cooper is Rocket Racoon, a genetically rewired Daniel Boone hat-in-the-making with an Einstein-like brilliance. Unfortunately, Cooper overplays him vocally, imparting a grating character that is less quasar than quasi-Bowery Boy. In a film that seldom abandons its video game pacing, Cooper’s racoon character is the one reeks most of a video game performance.

On the other hand, Vin Diesel, whose part almost entirely consists of the same three words, “I am Groot,” sprouts the film’s most poignant moments as a tree-man whose heart is far less hardened than his bark. His completely other-worldly appearance brings a needed whimsy to the space fantasy, unlike the slight color variations of its humanoids and that earthly racoon whose presence defies any real rationality. It is Groot’s laconic presence and the gentle moments he creates that lets the film pause long enough to show the heart “Guardian” could have used more of.

“Guardians” is certain to please audiences with its all-cylinders firing action, but Gunn would have been well-served to let his jets cool down more between sprints. His failing to tug more at the heartstrings and have us fall for his characters is odd, as I have a sneaking suspicion that Gunn was more concerned with cementing them into a franchise and less with crafting a fully realized film.

Perhaps with the thought of sequel-to-come firmly in mind, the film’s timing feels off. A prison escape chews up far too much running time, while some major plot points are barely given a comic book frame’s worth of mention. The result is a story that feels penciled in, but not fully inked.

But by the film’s finale, Gunn achieves his goal and his cast melds into a gang you’ll be willing to spend more time with in future installments, Awesome Mix Tape Part Deux, which is all any studio could hope for … in this galaxy or the next.

At times it tries to be funny but other times it tries to be an action movie. Add that to the fact that most of the characters aren't that interesting. That manly because the movie doesn't divide it's time well among the characters, instead the movie mainly on one character Star lord, who is arguably the biggest ass in the movie. The only character I like in this movie would be Groot who can't speak but can convey the most emotion. The other characters we learn vary little about. But the worst part is the villain who is not given a back story for us to understand, all we get is he wants to kill a race of people for some reason that is not explained. In conclusion if your looking for a good comic book movie then go watch Thor into Dark World, it's way better than this pile of crap. Expand

The "gang is back in town" feeling is forced and rushed, but the comedy pays off. Good CGI, good acting, but if the story was a little more patient, i could go for a 2h30 movie easy, and would be the most memorable adventure film in a long time. Believe or not, this lack of material makes you just don't care for what happens near the end of the movie. Expand

It takes place in outer space, a setting where few action/adventure movies have found traction in recent years. Although it remains to be seen whether this will represent a shrewd movie on the part of Marvel or a significant misstep, the resultant production is engaging for the most part and highly reminiscent of the wave of post-Star Wars space operas that emerged during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The vibe, if not the specifics, is highly reminiscent of The Last Starfighter, Battlestar Galactica, Battle Beyond the Stars, and others. The fact that the movie's "present" is defined as being 1988 and the soundtrack is peppered with '70s tunes cements the retro feeling.

The basic narrative of Guardians of the Galaxy is the kind of light popcorn fare that comic books (and their spin-off products) can get away with. The plot is riddled with seeming inconsistencies (although I'm sure die-hard fans can explain all the limitations constraining the supposedly all-powerful orb) and a lot of threads are left dangling (presumably for exploration in the already-greenlit sequel). However, the characters develop a nice rapport, the dialogue crackles with wit, and the '70s songs add an element of freshness to the proceedings. The anticlimactic resolution, which relies in part on an unfortunate instance of corny physical humor, is a bit of a letdown but that's often the case with superhero movies, where the journey is more entertaining than the destination.

Visually, the movie overdoses on CGI - it looks a lot like the Star Wars prequels (although director James Gunn has indicated he mixed in so-called practical effects). The two non-humanoid members of the team were created entirely by computer. Groot, the walking tree-like entity whose voice is provided by Vin Diesel, is a triumph of artistry. A similar comment can be made about Rocket, who looks almost like a raccoon… but not quite. The 3-D falls into the "neutral" range of the spectrum in that it neither enhances nor detracts from the overall experience.

With the exception of Lee Pace, whose Ronan isn't as nasty as one might hope for a big, bad villain, the cast is well-chosen. Chris Pratt brings a mix of Han Solo-inspired bravado and Luke Skywalker-influenced heroism to his part. Zoe Saldana, adding green skin to her resume (after having been blue-skinned in Avatar), is effectively tough and conflicted as Gamora and her chemistry with Pratt generates the right amount of heat. Dave Bautista's Drax, who comes across like a semi-eloquent Hulk, provides some comic relief without going over-the-top. Actors in secondary roles include Michael Rooker as the bandit lord Yondu (whose weaponry is very cool); Karen Gillan as Nebula, Ronan's hench(wo)man; and Glenn Close as the leader of Xandar's military. Josh Brolin's interpretation of Thanos makes us wish that he, instead of Ronan, had been the main villain.

Despite a variety of unresolved narrative elements, Guardians of the Galaxy is sufficiently self-contained to work as a stand-alone film even though the goal is to make this the starting point for a long-running franchise. Guardians of the Galaxy is immersed in a characteristic evident in The Avengers--related movies (but not found in most other major comic book films): irreverence. By not taking anything too seriously, it allows cheesy plot elements to work where they might fail in another context. Guardians of the Galaxy is solid summer fun - not the mammoth epic we have come to expect from each new Marvel release, but a welcome entry into a moribund movie season.

The action takes place not that long ago but definitely far away, although the opening scenes are on Earth. Peter Quill (played by Wyatt Olef as a child and Chris Pratt as an adult) is abducted by aliens shortly after his mother dies of cancer. He grows up as part of a band of intergalactic thieves and smugglers and the first time we meet him as a man (with the code name of "Star Lord"), he's stealing an orb. It turns out that seemingly everyone wants the orb: terrorist Ronan (Lee Pace), who wants to use it to obliterate his enemies, the Xandarans; Thanos (Josh Brolin), the warlord who can use it to attain mastery over the universe; The Collector (Benicio Del Toro), who covets all rare and powerful items; and many lesser entities who plan to sell it. After being arrested and imprisoned (and having the orb taken away from him), Quill is forced into an uneasy alliance with several of his fellow inmates: Gamora (Zoe Saldana), an "adopted daughter" of Thanos; Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), a literal minded mountain of a man who seeks revenge against Ronan; Rocket (voice of Bradley Cooper), a genetically engineered raccoon with a bad temper and a love of guns; and Groot (voice of Vin Diesel), an Ent-like creature who speaks only one line: "I am Groot." The five remain united after their prison break in order to retrieve the orb and keep it away from Ronan.

Is 'Guardians of the Galaxy' as amazing as the IMDb rating (which this reviewer learned long ago is not something that should be taken to heart) and ecstatic reviews suggest? To me, not quite. Is 'Guardians of the Galaxy' well made andIs 'Guardians of the Galaxy' as amazing as the IMDb rating (which this reviewer learned long ago is not something that should be taken to heart) and ecstatic reviews suggest? To me, not quite. Is 'Guardians of the Galaxy' well made and entertaining? Absolutely.

'Guardians of the Galaxy' boasts spectacular special effects, gorgeously psychedelic colours, slick-yet-with-enough-visual-depth cinematography (nothing cartoonish or plastic here) and very colourful and atmospheric sets that more than effectively makes one think they are immersed in this galaxy. Costumes and make-up are also of very good quality. The 70s soundtrack and score is rousing and touchingly nostalgic. The action is beautifully edited, choreographed with lots of entertainment value and thrills and is at best exhilarating, there's plenty of it without feeling too much.

James Gunn directs with style and a sure hand, always seeming as if he knew what tone he was going for and who he was aiming at ('Guardians of the Galaxy' is far and above anything else he's done and his best overall direction is here as well. Personally really enjoyed the way that 'Guardians of the Galaxy' was written too, the jokes are enormously entertaining and the film also has heart with a genuinely emotional opening.

The story is non-stop energy and compelling, with a nice balance of comedy, drama and section. It is not perfect, and is one of the film's weaker points, with a been-there-done-that feel, a couple of overly-sentimental moments and a couple of randomly placed moments that were not needed at all and just took away from the flow and tone of the scene (Chris Pratt's dance).

The characters are on the most part incredibly colourful and engaging, with a great chemistry throughout. Peter is a likable lead character and Groot is quite adorable and amusing, but Rocket the Racoon doesn't just threaten to steal the show, to me Rocket actually does steal the show. The one exception really is the very bland and barely developed villain Ronan.

Chris Pratt is highly charismatic, Zoe Saldana is suitably fiery, Karen Gillan is imposingly formidable, Dave Bautista induces lots of laughs and charm while showing a very intensely played vengeful side (though that was a little too hastily introduced) and a surprisingly well-cast Vin Diesel does a great job as Groot. Bradley Cooper stands out, being a sheer delight as Rocky. Lee Pace tries but struggles to bring any menace or dimension to Ronan, can't say I blame him as anybody given the role if written in the way it was here would have struggled to bring believability to it.

All in all, not perfect and not quite as great as all that but exciting, well-made and lots of fun, really enjoyed it. 8/10 Bethany Cox

That alone, and the fact there was a talking raccoon in the trailers had me very hesitant in going to see it. But after hearing how good it was from a few friends I decided to go see it. This movie has such a great soundtrack (if you like 80's music that is) and they also did a perfect job in casting, the acting was pretty awesome.
