First of all, it was absolutely hilarious. The only superhero movie to date that I think rivals it in pure humor is Thor 2 but that was largely thanks to one person, Kat Dennings. This film has great laughs thanks to every character. From Peter Quill constantly fighting his ego to Gamora's "who put the sticks up their butt" misunderstanding to Drax not being able to understand metaphors to Rocket's abrasive edge to Groot's incredible dialoque, they all provide laughing moments throughout the film. The action sequences were done really well, as is to be expected from Marvel these days. The plot also unfolded nicely. I was worried in the beginning that they were trying to stretch the audience's attention too thin and have too many plot elements going on at once but they merged fairly quickly and developed well. I still would've preferred for this element of the Marvel universe to stay separate from the Avengers but hey, it's still very entertaining. Expand

When I first saw the concept art, I couldn't believe we were were gonna have a Marvel movie with a TALKING RACOON! I was like WTF? I was skeptical and in slight disbelief.

However, when I saw the first trailer I was pretty much sold on the idea. Make mine Marvel! (Ugh, that sounds so tacky and stupid. Lol.) The film isn't pure quirkiness and comedy, but can be serious and sad too. I actually felt pretty sad at the beginning of the film, and near the end, because of some certain SPOILERS. However, GOTG's specialty is comedy, and the way Groot, Star-Lord, Rocket Racoon, and Gamora meet is pretty funny. I loved all the characters: Star-Lord/Peter Quill (another Marvel playboy); Drax the Destroyer (who has more lines than the marketing campaign/promotional would suggest); Gamora (the second green skinned character in the MCU), Groot (a very lovable and protective Tree-like sentient creature) and Rocket (who I would love to see exchange some sarcastic witty banter with Tony Stark/Iron Man/Robert Downey Jr). The villains however, suffer a common problem that plagues many MCU villains: lack of character development and general clichéness. Ronan, Nebula, and Korath (especially the last two) don't do much and are little more than background characters.

These "cosmic Avengers" didn't have solo films to introduce each character, so not ALL the characters have the ALL screentime they deserve. But GOTG does pretty well. Most of the comedy is good, but some is SLIGHTLY awkward and feels kinda forced.

Still, those little things can do nothing to stop GOTG from being a fun and enjoyable experience. Some thought it would be Marvel's riskiest box office bet, but it definitely succeded and has a opening weekend gross close to Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier.

P.S, I think you'll either be amused or pissed off at the pre/post credits scenes in GOTG. lol. Also, cannot wait for The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron! I loved the AoU poster and trailer at SDCC, as well as the BvS teaser.

If you liked this review, I have also reviewed the 2014 films Sharknado 2: The Second One, Dawn of the Planets of the Apes, Transformers 4: Age of Extinction, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Edge of Tommorow, X-Men Days of Future Past, Godzilla, Transcendence, Blended, The Lego Movie, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, and more! I also reviewed the TV shows The Last Ship, Gang Related, Crisis, 24: Live Another Day, I Wanna Marry Harry, Marvel's Agents of Shield, The 100, and Sleepy Hollow.

Goodbye! Sincerely, Alexg732.

But like most class clowns, sometimes you wish it would apply itself — because it seems capable of being so much more. This is a film that does not see itself through. And while it's a good film for almost everyone in the family, it may leave some fans wanting to see more out of this newly birthed adaptation. It's cheesy, somewhat shallow, and predictable. But it's also full of action, self-awareness, and is a fresh take on the superhero genre and overall an entertaining experience. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film is full of one-dimensional characters, too much unfunny humor and a cliched plot. Director James Gunn clearly depended on jokes to entertain the audience. But what am I to say? This film managed to score 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, but for what? The villain is also the most forgettable villain in the history of comic book movies, the way they wrote him is so lazy, it's unintentionally hilarious.

'Guardians of the Galaxy' is a colossal misfire, one of the worst comic book movies I have ever seen, trying too hard to be something unique and fails miserably. This felt more like a "Star Wars" spoof than a comic book action movie.

Having said all of this, this film gets points for its actors and special effects. Chris Pratt, overflowing with charisma, plays Peter Quill aka "Star Lord" really well and will satisfy most fans. I found Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel) to be emotionally detached. The romance between Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Drax (Dave Bautista), or Gamora and Star Lord felt forced and lacking chemistry.

The story is very cliche, and there is no struggle for any of the characters, when things did get serious, the Raccoon would say something ridiculous that made everyone, but me, burst out in laughter. If this film doesn't take itself seriously, why should I??? I can only give this film such a score...and 3 out of 10 is the best I can do.

I am not saying that this is the worst comic book film I've seen, that title belongs to 'Catwoman' (2004). But this film is far from being average, let alone great. If you ask me, I think the critics must have been drinking, or smoking some kind of odd drug before they reviewed this movie. Marvel stuck their middle finger up at me when I saw 'Iron Man 3' (2013), they treat me like a fool again with this.

I've seen this movie twice in the cinemas because everybody wanted to see it, all I know is...I was the only one in the group that did not want to buy it on DVD. I don't mean to sound cynical, I think I'll just stick to watching 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' and 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' thank you.

Oh, and spoilers...what spoilers?? Nobody major even dies in this movie. There is one scene where Gamora is floating around in space and is assumed to be dead, but surprise surprise!!! She's ALIVE!!! What was the point of trying to leave the audience in the dark about that? Groot even dies, but he grows back to life, basically everybody you see in the movie poster remains alive in the entire movie.

Like I said, stick to Cap America 2 and X-Men: DOFP, better movies filled with cleaner action and self-aware humor that doesn't go too over the top.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It absolutely blows me away that this is receiving so many positive reviews. This is by a wide margin one of the worst mainstream action movies I have ever seen. It was incredibly corny, but not a good kind of corny. Just awful directing that feels like it could have been written by an 8 year old. Whoever directed this didn't even seem to try.
.
So there were hundreds of different alien races , but they all looked remarkably similar to humans. WHY? This makes absolutely no sense, but they didn't even attempt to explain this. Why did they all speak English with American accents, furthurmore?
Why was Groot able to pierce the aliens' armor, when he's made of wood? WOOD? They're hyper-advanced aliens that have a respectable grasp on space travel, but they go into battle wearing armor that can be pierced by a sharp stick?
WHY, for the love of Christ, when the alien spacecraft crash landed on a planet and demolshed several city blocks, were the rest of the main cast able to survive without a scratch because they were protected by a nest of spindly branches?

These are just a couple of the very obvious, gaping flaws in this film that nobody seemed to even try to explain. There were so many stupid problems with this film that it would probably exceed the 5,000 character limit were I try to list them all off. This is a movie that was almost hilariously bad at times on my first viewing, and I'd be willing to bet would get steadily worse if I were to watch it multiple times.

I'm giving this movie one point for animation, but even that wasn't very good in some places. The imaginative design that went into A COUPLE characters like Groot was fantastic, but then there were scenes like the one where they're standing amongst the ruins of a destroyed city block, and nothing looked like it was actually there. They were very clearly standing in front of a greenscreen.

This movie is like the sum of all the things an author is left with after spending out all of his/her creativity.

Basically it gives the impression as if people didn't know what to come up with anymore, so they've just put every single crazy thing they could think of into this movie producing nothing but a really big pile of mixed unrelated trash.

Movie is trying to be funny, but somehow it's not, despite all the efforts. If I had to guess, I'd say the only reason this movie got positive score is because it's: 1. Dinsey and 2. Marvel

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In my opinion, this movie is overrated. A lot. I may have only seen 44 minutes of this movie, but, in those 44 minutes, I loathed this movie. The majority of the dialogue is poorly-written, the soundtrack is out-of-place, the scenes transition way too quickly to understand what is going on, and the characters are boring. I assume the boy in the beginning is a young Quinn, however the boy is blond and Chris Pratt has dark hair. The reason I only saw 44 minutes of this movie is because I thought it was so bad I just gave up. I didn't even bother seeing if the movie got better because it was already damaged beyond repair. Now, it did have good special effects, and I liked the songs in the first few scenes, but everything else either made no sense at all, or was poorly-written. The opening title sequence was lousy, as Chris Pratt broke out into dance for no reason other than so the credits could show who made it and who starred in it, and then when the aliens threatened to arrest him for stealing the orb, he looked genuinely shocked. It was his fault for wasting all that time dancing for no reason other than something that is beyond the fourth wall. If you enjoyed this movie, fine. I think kids could get a kick out of this movie, though there are some elements that parents may not like. I, however, could not enjoy this movie at all and didn't even finish it due to how bad it was. Expand

Guardians of the Galaxy is 2014's must see movie.

Perhaps a little overstuffed, the movie makes up for it with hilarious dialogue, an epic space opera tone, fantastic visuals and captivating storytelling. It has charm and a lot of heart, although its silliness can be over the top at times.

Comparable to what Star wars was to the 70's, Guardians of the Galaxy will leave its mark with a fresh story which introduces new iconic characters that are sure to become the new faces of our generation.

In my own opinion, this movie would be a 10, but for the sake of being subjective I will agree that it is more of a 9, because it does lack a cohesive plot, and under-utilizes its villain. Some movie goers may find that the wit, and charm along with the chemistry between the cast can compensate for it flaws, but for those who are expecting a more grounded and serious movie will be disappointed.

As far as its connection to the current Marvel Universe, I feel that GotG is in a league of its own, and brings something fresh to the table.

Overall, GotG is pure summer blockbuster fun with enough brains and charm to please most movie audiences.

I have never reviewed a movie before, but I came here to promise you anything in this world that the person who wrote the script for this movie does not have an IQ higher than 85.

There is nothing in the movie that is not unfathomably cliche (a sci-fi movie where protagonists fight for a mythical orb for no reason, a deus ex machina ending that I can't even remember despite seeing it a few days ago, and absolutely moronic dialogue in which characters announce their intentions for actions while doing them).

Also, the poor delivery of every "joke" renders the entire thing devoid of humor, unless you think that a giant ambiguous plant repeating its name every 5 minutes is funny.

If you are an idiot, then feel free to see this movie. If not, do yourself a favor and watch something that is not utterly pathetic in every way.

Chris Pratt and Bradley Cooper are hilarious as Quill and Rocket. In a universe with skull-shaped space stations and a walking house plant, their schtick has consistently great timing. Dave Batista feels sort of like an after thought as Drax, but he gets plenty of his own gags as well. There are plenty of goofy comic-book universe moments, but none that are really out-of-place in the last decade's series of entries. I get the sense that there was plenty of fan-service, but that all went over my head.

The movie's only real weakness is Zoe Saldana as Gamora, whose lady-ninja love-interest typecast is rapidly getting stale. Whether in Drumline, Star Trek, Columbiana, or Avatar, she's the exact same character, and throughout Guardians she seems to be the only character not enjoying the adventure. And based on the few scenes where we see her opposite Karen Gillan (playing Nebula) it's hard not to wonder if they miscast the two of them since Gillan conveys much more anger and power while Saldana seems to be the pretty girl that barely hits someone and sends their stunt doubles flying across the room.

I'm hereNot many people are familiar with the Guardians of the Galaxy, so a lot of people thought Marvel was taking a very big risk making a movie for these characters. The trailers looked great in every way, yet people were still skeptical. I'm here to confirm it people, along with many others-Guardians of the Galaxy is the movie you wanted, and delivers so much more. Peter Quill, Gamora, Rocket, Groot, and Drax come on screen to deliver possibly the funnest time you will have at the theatre this year. Funny, heartwarming, clever, and action packed can all be words to describe this awesome movie. So since the movie is named after this group of characters, let's talk about these characters. Chris Pratt plays the leader, Star Lord, and I've never seen him better. He was just the perfect choice for this role. While Pratt is amazing, there's one character that truly steals the show: Rocket. How did you not expect this raccoon that spits out hilarious lines with big guns to be the star of the show? Bradley Cooper's voice for him was also amazing. Then there's Gamora. Zoe Saldana is known for being a great sci-fi movie actress, and she's well known for her very, very, very good performances in Avatar and the new Star Trek flicks. She's just as good here, and even though there's not a lot of it, her chemistry with Pratt is great. There's not much to say about Groot since he only says "I am Groot" for the movie, but I loved his abilities and watching him in action. One of the less noteworthy ones is Drax. Marvel made a bit of a mistake here by hiring a former wrestler. While Drax does have very good lines and funny sarcasm, the guy that plays him is not a great actor. The main villain, Ronan, wasn't very good, either. Overall, he was serviceable, but I just felt he was generic. His main motivations come from his generic story about how his father was killed and now he wants revenge. However, seeing the 5 guardians come together and interact on screen was a constant delight. The story isn't overly complex starting out, and it doesn't get to that later on, either. 85% of the time I was fine with that, though. Almost 100% of the time this movie is simply hilarious. I can't tell you how many times I was laughing out loud hysterically. This movie also has an awesome soundtrack. Me being a 70's and 80's rock lover, I loved every track. The movie also has great action sequences. The most memorable parts are all-out dogfights, but the guardians can also kick ass gloriously without aircraft. Great visuals compliment the action, too, but at small times it looked like live-action. Despite flaws with Ronan and Drax, a very slight amount of complexity, and not-always-perfect visuals, Guardians of the Galaxy is a complete blast. Marvel took a risk with this flick-but what's the pay off here? You should know after all the stuff I've said so far: BIG TIME! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's simple this movie is made of plot convenience, bro humor, inconsistent characters and filler upon filler conversations.
Example: super bad-ass assassin character has killed so many to build her reputation, but 3 random inmates subdue her fully...
Example: drax the destroyer is supposed to be the toughest thing around but gets beaten up by every mid level boss also in the extremely out of place bar scene all non human characters get drunk but in the very next scene all other characters sober up while the biggest guy is still drunk (i'm going to ignore that someone can call an army on the phone)

After all I was set in space with all new character we have to learn about, as well as how they meet and then have them do something heroic. I thought it would feel rushed like if the Avengers had to explain each character origins instead of having all of Phase 1 to do that. Clearly my prediction was wrong as it is so perfect it is hard to explain why. It's a story about a group of relatively unknown character set in a relatively unknown setting and is so brilliant for it's ability for the character to run around and not bother with explanations except for one small part in the middle of the movie but it never loses the fast paced story and action. It doesn't have the super awesome super hero fight scenes of The Winter Solider but fills the gap with some awesome star-ship battles and the music which proves that old 70-80s songs can be better than having music the likes of Star Wars. The character are a ragtag band of misfits who take steps to make the film not take it self seriously at some points. But I think the treasure is the fact it made Chris Pratt, a talking raccoon, a green skinned assassin, a walking tree, and a alien maniac look like the coolest people in the universe. Expand

Went in with high expectations based on the trailers and buzz surrounding the movie and for the first time in a long while I left feeling that they had been exceeded and then some. The film is a brilliant mix of compelling characters, solid acting and amazing production. Chris Pratt is absolutely perfect as Star Lord. It's great to see him on the big screen in comparison to his character Andy in Parks & Recreation. I think one of the main reasons the film has done so well is the well balanced addition of off-beat humour, something which isn't a common thread in Marvel comic book movies to date. Definitely worth seeing - ignore these idiots giving it a zero - they are just desperately seeking some attention! Expand

Guardians of the Galaxy was a ton of fun from start to finish and I loved almost every minute of it! Sure the main premise has some similarities with The Avengers (e.g. the conventional plot of a villain seeking world domination, and a team of heroes putting aside their differences to stop the villain), but it more than made up for it with it's pitch-perfect cast, dazzling fight sequences, fantastic character dynamics between the main 5 leads and of course great writing! I haven't laughing at a Marvel movie so much since Thor, and it was perfect for balancing out the serious moments of the movie, maybe overstepping that balance a little but given the goofy tone it was going for; I can't blame the movie for it. For Marvel Studios to release a movie part of a little-known franchise like this: the fact that they pulled it off as well as they did is very commendable on their part. It gave me exactly what I wanted to see: an action-packed comedy in space! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Analysis: Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) *SPOILERS*

So here we are, one of the most exciting and funniest movie of 2014: Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Like most people, I didn’t know who the hell were “Guardians of the Galaxy”, I was unfamiliar with the heroes. When I saw the trailer for the film, I didn’t get my expectations up, as the trailer wasn’t something special. However, after seeing couple of clips and more trailers, I got intrigued by it, I went to see the movie and holy sh*t. This movie is really great. The action sequences are very well done and the visual effects are sparkling, but the strong point of “Guardians of the Galaxy” is definitely, the satire. This is probably one of the most hilarious Marvel films to date, even counting “Ghost Rider: The Spirit of Vengeance” in which its badness gets way too funny, and NO, I’m not saying that “Guardians” is bad, it’s a well put together film. There’s some issues with the movie, such as the villain. I will explain that later in this review.

After discovering a mysterious orb in another part of the galaxy, Peter Quill from Earth, is now the main target of a manhunt led by the genocidal villain Ronan the Accuser. Being hunted across the galaxy, Quill gets lumped together with a group of misfits that need to learn how to get along before they can become the "Guardians of the Galaxy".

The cast seems to have fun. After all, they’re presented with a welcome dose of humor, which is pretty great. If you buy the Blu-ray, you’ll get some extras – one of them being “The Making of” – in which Chris Pratt (the guy who played Peter Quill in this one, and also played Wesley’s friend in “Wanted”) tells that in Morag scene, when he’s dancing, he tells that the music helped him give a top-notch performance. This kind of energy contributes for the performances of the stars, and thanks to James Gunn’s stylish direction, he managed to pull the performances necessary to carry the film. There were some countless scenes that really made me cachinnate, one of them being the Prison escape where Drax – a character that takes everything literally – lets a metaphor go over his head, and he says: “Nothing goes over my head. My reflexes are too fast I would catch it”. Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) also gets a few witty moments, and the character Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) earns marks for some emotional scenes, such as his “supposed” death. Gamora (portrayed by Zoe Saldana) is Thanos’ daughter, who also teams up with the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy to defeat the antagonist. She’s not as sexy as most people were saying she was, in my opinion, but she’s undoubtedly, a badass assassin. Songs like “Come and Get Your Love” and “Hooked on a Feeling” are perfect, a well-chosen soundtrack indeed.

The action and the special effects are simply put together, awesome. The action is well done. I wouldn’t say “outstanding” because that would be an overstatement, but it’s very entertaining. I will indicate one action sequence that stands out among as everything else, like: Kyln Prison Escape. A scene where Drax picks a machine gun, passes it out to Rocket. Rocket says: “Oh yeah!” and starts destroying every single robot, enjoying himself while doing it (Notice how I referred Rocket as “him”, not “it”). Yeah, this scene is just amazing, as well other scenes, such as the Pod chase scene. Quill sacrifices his life to save Gamora’s is just a heartfelt sequence. Now, let’s move on to the visual effects. They are jaw-dropping. Groot and Rocket’s design are mind-blowing, they’re phenomenal. I don’t know what else I can say about them, they’re just awesome. Go watch the “Making of Guardians of the Galaxy” and see how they designed the characters and the effects.

One of the main reasons as to why “Thor: The Dark World” almost failed is because of its underdeveloped, completely forgettable antagonist (wait, who was he again? Someone named “Malekith or some sh*t, ah, whatever!). As I was saying, that’s why I had to lower my score, it’s because the villain was bad. That problem threatens to happen here, but at least, the bad guy is cool, unlike Malekith. His name is Ronan, the Accuser. I’m not saying that he’s not a badass with some cool weapons and powers, but he just seemed so bland and generic. He basically… wants the Infinity Stone and he needs to deliver the stone to Thanos, but he actually touches it, and becomes powerful than what he previously was. It’s quite clear that Marvel is weak when it comes to develop villains and write dialogue. The dialogue in this movie is not bad, in fact, its cheesiness is what makes it so meritorious.

Final Score to Guardians of the Galaxy: 9/10. I understand why people love it and I also understand why some people didn’t like it that much. This movie is briskly entertaining, frequently funny, visually splendid and well-acted. I love it, it makes me happy every time I watch it.

The Quest Is On [Assemble Your Team of Ninjas]

For me the movie is about the journey that Peter Quill [Star-Lord] makes from a small time outlaw trying making up a reputation for himself. Then he finds his true calling when he is given the chance to save the Galaxy. He teams up with a very unlikely team of “Crazy Creative Ninjas”. They don’t step back in the face of a near impossible challenge. They improvise and adapt to the challenge in very creative ways.

It’s also about owning your own identity and try to direct how others define you. Both through your actions and what thoughts you share. To do your own Storytelling about you.
You are the one doing your own Self Narration.

You are the one doing your own Self Narration - Lord Sillion

So do take care of this opportunity to define your own identities. Your brain buys what it tells itself so don’t let others define you. Be sure that you are in charge of the message that you tell your brain. And, this is important, and that it is good message.

And just like Peter Quill, remember that your are not alone. Assemble your small team of Creative Ninjas go out on adventure together. They affect you as much as you affect them. You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. So chose your team of Ninjas carefully.

So go forth and tell your story to both yourself and others so that the story about you and your legend takes shape and roots first inside yourself and then spreads out from there. And help your Ninjas tell their stories. This is your Quest.

I'm very happy to say this movie not only surpassed my expectations, but it blew me away. The comedy is spot on, all characters have amazing timing and genuinely funny and unique personalities. Chris Pratt is hilarious and a natural leading man, charming, funny, and pretty damn badass as he goes from a Han Solo type to a true Marvel superhero, worthy of the name Star-Lord.
I brought along my wife and another couple to this movie. My friend's wife was pretty sure she'd be falling asleep during this one, as it's definitely not in her genre (she generally likes movies based on Jane Austen novels). I was glad to see that everybody in my group was thoroughly entertained by this film. It's got great action, a very cool story (I don't know why on Earth some critics would call the plot confusing, it isn't), amazing characters that you can't help but love and care about, and more laughs than most comedies contain.
This is the first movie in a long time that had me quoting the lines as I left the theater. I actually wanted to see it again right away, and will definitely, definitely get it on Blu-Ray. Best movie I've seen all year, and as close to a perfect Summer movie as anyone could ask for.

The cast of characters -- WWE wrestler Dave Bautista, who has received roles in mostly mediocre action-adventure films throughout the early '10s, might get typecasted from here on out, but he's a very welcoming addition to the Marvel universe -- has Avengers-level chemistry and the comedic timing is impeccable, it's the funniest franchise in the universe so far. The 3D actually helps craft the film's spectacular visuals for once. All of those amazing qualities emit from the five characters that serve as our band of misfit heroes, with actors that were casted with perfection for their respectable roles. With all that said, this movie is truly a remarkable masterpiece of everything that you would want from a Marvel movie; that should be enjoyed by everyone. 5 Big Stars!!! Expand

I perfectly blends everything you love about Sci-Fi and add its own Marvel twist. The acting is fantastic, with Bradly Cooper and Chris Pratt stealing the show as Rocket and Star Lord. Vin Diesel as Groot is great and lends a lot of humor to the movie. Zoe Saldana is great as Gamora, making the character so interesting, that I wanted to know more. The real surprise is Dave Bautista as Drax. For this being his first movie since leaving the WWE, he does a pretty good job and has a few good jokes on his own. The humor in the movie is great, easily making it Marvel's funniest movie to date. Most, if not all, the jokes hit the mark and are clever. The action is top-notch and what we have come to expect from Marvel movies. I've seen some reviewers complain how Ronan isn't very interesting, and I don't really agree. Ronan is very menacing and Karen Gillan as Nebula, his henchmen, adds to his awesomeness. Overall, the movie is one of, if not the best summer blockbusters this year and definitely on my top 10. The hardest question I had to ask myself was whether I liked this or Captain America more. :) BTW Make sure to stay for the end-credits scene, it's a funny surprise! Expand

It's not particularly bad, but it is a very flawed movie. The main reason would be the fact that the character interactions were mainly exposition. It's like a stuck record - they either tell their past stories or explain the plot, or constantly bash your head with reasons why they do or will do the things they do. In short - sloppy character writing that relies on exposition way too much.
Second problem is the plot, that really doesn't have much of themes or ideas behind it. It felt like it was to further up the Thanos plot line. It all revolves around the mystical relic that everyone wants. That's it.
Lastly, its saving grace was supposed to be its light-hearted humor. I expected it to be something similar to more subtle humor in previous Marvel installments (for example: Iron Man, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier) however this time the humor to me was way weaker, because of its abundance. It wasn't subtle and it relied more on specific character traits, pop culture references and easily noticeable formulas. It stuck to a few places, but ultimately fell flat.
In the end, the film wasn't a waste of my time, but I left the theater unimpressed.

TrulyAfter failing to enjoy his previous works like "Slither" and "Super," I consider myself to not be a James Gunn fan. However his work with this relatively unknown group of Marvel heroes manages to exceed my admittedly low expectations. Truly it's one of the best sci-fi movies in recent years as well as one of the best superhero movies of the year.

It all succeeds thanks to smart *ss humor, big action spectacle, an excellently crafted sci-fi world, and a surprisingly touching story about friendship. It expands the Marvel cinematic universe into new territory. Single-handedly this film opens it up to countless new horizons and potential stories.

The excellently cast group of oddball outcasts come together perfectly. Their back and forth is often very funny even if some jokes do fall short. Overall it's not as funny as a movie as it could have been, but that's easily forgiven considering how great the story surrounding them is.

You can see that the events here play a role in the grand scheme of things Marvel has crafted for the universe. Somethings might go over the heads of those who aren't familiar with these characters outside of the movies, and because of that a big character that kicks off events might seem confusingly out of place. However this movies self-contained plot never really falls short because of that, outside of what I just mentioned.

The movies greatest strength is how quickly it allows us to grow and like these characters. They're outcasts, freaks, and loners who come together and form their own sort of family. It leads to quite a few heartwarming moments.

The action is solidly delivered with cool alien technology and great special effects. The aerial dogfights can bring back some fan favorite Star Wars moments. There are definitely things out of the norm for a Marvel action movie in the action department.

Overall it's a great entry into the MCU. One that has potential to branch out from what Marvel is doing with their heroes on earth. There's a world here worth exploring and expanding upon, and I for one cannot wait to see what comes next.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" soars. It's one that every fan of the MCU needs to check out. Some elements may alienate those without years worth of knowledge and insight into Marvel's comic book universe, but overall I doubt it will leave anyone too disappointed. My total score for the movie is an 8.9/10.

This is more of a fun sci-fi movie than classic super hero flick. It is just original enough most should not feel like they have seen this film a thousand times before, but not so original that it is just odd feeling. The pacing can be a little slow early on, but over all good pacing. Thankfully, they do not spend 95% of the movie telling back stories for each character. The villian(s) is little to cliche. I like how they pulled the team together. If you did not see any of the latest crop of Marvel movies, you will be fine. This is a stand alone series.

Basically, if enjoyed The Fifth Element, Star Wars, or other sci-fi along those lines, this will be well worth your time and money.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow was I wrong about this movie. I was again hoping for a good story with some tense action but just like Legos Movie I got burned by Metacritic. I mention Legos Movie because Guardians has the same type of Attention Deficit Disorder style. The average length of each frame must be about 2 seconds. I swear it is just switch, switch, switch, etc. etc. throughout the whole movie. I sensed something wrong when the lead character just easily escapes the killers in the beginning. I mean he just skips past them and lands in his ship and zoooooom, is out of there with lasers shooting all around him. Lame. The whole movie is like this. They should have all been killed 100 times by the end of the movie. I mean seriously- the girl was blown out of her pod and the guy shoots out and gives her his mask thingy and they are both saved. No way. They should have both been dead 20 times in just that scene alone. And the big guy. Didn't he get stomped by the bad guy and thrown into a pool of mustard. And submerged there for a good while. He just jumps on up and is back in action. I guess the movie expects us to all accept that they all have live forever superpowers. Story- boy is it horrible. I may have missed something but a softball sized orb that has all of the power in the universe. I could have thought of something more original than that. The lead guy somehow knew how to conjure it in the beginning to sell to a pawn shop. Then all of the bad guys are chasing them for it throughout the whole movie. The one liners to put some comedy in it were so horrible. I just felt this way about the Lego Movie. Horrible story, action scenes that are way too over the top with fast switching frames where they escape among a hail of bullets time after time again, lame attempts at comedy, and way too long is how I feel about both movies. I guess if you like Lego then you'll get a kick out of this. Expand

Incredibly witty yet scruffy with amazing style that doesn't follow any superhero formula, it is near impossible to dislike Guardians of the Galaxy. Classic soundtracks oddly fit the cosmic saga, giving it grounded and slightly nostalgic feeling. This may very well be the Star Wars of this generation.

This adventure of ragged uncommon crew has a unique light tone, almost resembling morning children cartoon or video game. The humor is spot-on, cleverly written and personalized the characters better than dull gloomy distress most fantasy movies opt for. While the dysfunctional team has its issues, they are delivered with ease, discarding any cumbersome drama and replacing them with accessible comedy.

Chris Pratt is an excellent choice for Peter Quill. He is a good example of ruffian with somewhat noble heart, and Chris Pratt hasn't been too fixed on a protagonist image. It works well since Pratt could be your usual hero, but more importantly he brings great unsuspected humor. His character serves as anchor for humanity, because even though the tale happens in gigantic other realm, Quill is often shown as mere human and this aspect will definitely resonate with the audience.

Zoe Saldana as Gamora is now green skinned. After Avatar and Star Trek it’s safe to say that she possesses the exotic alien look. As a veteran of sci-fi genre, she carries herself comfortably and quite believably as action persona. Her character is indeed a peculiar love interest for Quill, but deep down it’s more a search for companionship rather than romance. Dave Bautista as Drak hasn’t got much experience in acting yet, still this character suits him and with a compliment of good cast, he probably has the better role any pro wrestlers have had in recent time.

Groot and Rocket are both CGI. Rocket, voiced by Bradley Cooper, is the heart of the movie. He’s a strange mix of raccoon and mercenary, a bit broken and still eloquently funny. Vin Diesel voices Groot, ironic that most of his roles are tough guys but as a gullible and vocabulary challenged tree that he delivers his better work. Aside from these two, CGI also covers the vistas and expected laser shooting futuristic action.

Design for the setting is great, often depicting places like those in video games. The splendor of debris and explosive accompanies the movie, it’s undeniably a good spectacle and top tier for blockbuster. The director James Gunn delivers a good continuation of scenes, humorous line and constant pace. Soundtracks from classic 80s music is gold, the contrast works much better than any techno tune could possible do.

Guardians of Galaxy is a rare movie that keeps its audience fully entertained, it doesn’t let up, if fact it gets better as it progresses. It’s a heartfelt and genuine effort to connect with audience. When it ends, it gives a warm fuzzy feeling as one leaves the cinema. It is no less than an utter cinematic achievement.

The acting fell a bit flat at times but it was still another really good movie released by Marvel Studios. The group that was in the movie was a bit different as the GotG aren't that popular in the comic world. Barely anyone knew who they were at the time of the movie being announced but Marvel took a risk and it worked out very well. There was more of an emphasis on humor in this movie, which is probably why they hired a fairly well received comedian for the staring role in Chris Pratt. The humor is well done and the dynamic that is infused within the movie is really well done, especially with Rocket and Groot, who provided most of the humor the movie delivered. The movie had alot of action in it too and it bounced back and forth between the two very well. The only problem I had was with probably the most well known actor in the group and that was Zoe Saldana. She fell flat a few times here and there and I just felt like she was disinterested in what she was doing half the time on screen. It's not enough to ruin the movie but it was noticeable for me. At the end of the day though, this was a very well done movie and another good movie done by the Marvel Studios. It's the last one of the year for them and they went out with a pretty big bang. The space battle scenes put 2 of the last 3 star wars films to shame. I know CG has come a long way in a short amount of time, but you gaze at these alien civilizations and they are fully rendered and just make sense. The plot is not ultra complex, but it doesn't need to be. The characters are interesting. Even Groot, with the one phrase he can say. I thought that would get tired quick but surprisingly it doesn't.
My biggest criticism of this film is Karen Gillan's relatively small part. It would have been cool to see more with her character. More fight scenes or initiative from her.
This is not one of those films where a perfect protagonist easily saves the day. This is a film about a bunch of flawed characters making something more than they are. It is a very humorous film, but surprisingly it has heart too. And action. Lots and lots of action. It strikes a good balance. If I had to rank the marvel films from best to worst this one would easily come in top third.

ThatI read comics and manga only that published in the newspapers and weekly magazine, other than that I am not into the comic books. So I must admit that I never heard before 'Guardians of the Galaxy' till this project start to commence. That means I had no expectations, I mean the expectation was nil. Especially after seeing the trailers and teasers I was totally repelled away to see strange characters like a tree, raccoon and other colorful skin tone human like creatures. Frankly, I thought it would end up badly as 'Green Lantern' did. I discarded my negative thoughts and decided to go after all I am a movie fanatic and that's what I do. I can say all these things were in my advantage when I went to sit in the cinema hall like an empty minded. The opening credits began to roll, me too slowly started to dissolve with the movie. It was not even 5 minutes passed, but I was into it and can you believe that I forgot to have a bite the junk food I purchased. In the end, I was very impressed like never before and how much? That's what I am going to explain in the below paragraphs.

‘‘I am Groot.’’

First, I never heard this director, kind of new in town (to me). When I checked his filmography on the movie database I came to know that I loved his movie 'Super' which was just like the movie 'Defendor'. What a breakthrough he got from this movie to enter into the big director's league list. It is a dream come true. He's also going to make a sequel for this as well and that is the real test to prove he's not just lucky to get away with this movie. Because many has predicted it won't stand tall in the box office. But what I witnessed was exactly opposite. The responsibility has become so heavier.

Secondly, its a another 3M or MMM. Don't get confused, I was saying Marvel's Marvelous Magic. Other side Disney and Pixer are battling each others in animation field to dominate. In superhero themes, is there anyone to challenge Marvel? It is like one man's pride walk on the streets of Hollywood. Recently I said in the 'Need for Speed' review that EA joined something like the same, but a unique league to transform their games into the feature films. Whatever they do, it is our gain for sure. It was Marvel's sixth movie series from 'comic-to-movie' conversion, after Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America, including The Avengers. Remember 'Ant-Man' is in due early next years.

A story of a boy called Peter Quill, who was taken away from his home planet, Earth by the space pirates. 20 years later he becomes a skilled thief and calls himself Star-lord. As usual in one of his missions he meets some strange guys who are after the orb he stole from an isolated planet. Soon he realizes it is a bigger issue once he come to know what does orb do. Unexpectedly a five member team forms that includes him Quill the thief, Gamora as the assassin, Drax the destroyer, Rocket the genetically engineer-cum-bounty hunter and Groot the tree. They decide to work towards one purpose, but the thing is they are mismatched in everyway. That leads each others to get misunderstand, misuse and failures, in one word to say the losers. After the series of screw-up how they unite against the strongest villain in the galaxy Ronan was told before it wraps up with a grand final fight.

Yeah, I know the story was very simple. Men after the object that gives the power and strength is what's commonly known theme nowadays. But the beautiful cast and performances, including astonishing visuals will definitely change the viewer's perspective. It is going to be a game changer for the Chris Pratt's career. Congratulations to him to made his role unbelievably awesome. Now onwards its only look forward. Like always Zoe Saldana had been excellent and sexy under the alien skin avatar. If Andy Serkis is the master of motion-capture then Zoe is kind of a female version of him. Vin Diesel had the least display of all the lead characters, especially with his one and only dialogue that repeats all the time. It was so fun for the first time watch and hope it will remain same for repeat viewings. The character Rocket was another impressive, voice rendered by Bradley Cooper. Me too, to call him a raccoon kind of feel it is a racism remark. LOL. Definitely it is one of the top in the list of non-human or graphical character in a live-shot movie appearance. I think it was one of the biggest role ever Dave Bautista did. He was equally great to all the above, I stated. The cast was really a big, only those I mentioned in the above lines were having major portions in this installment. So expecting the others' time will come in the follow-up movies.

‘‘We are the bunch of jackass
standing in the circle.’’

Like I said the story was not the problem here because it was presented with plenty of fresh humor. Don't expect it like a serious movie with a serious mission that takes place travelling all around the galaxy in a spaceship. Especially it was far better than 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to

With hits including Blue Swede’s Hooked On a Feeling, The Runaway’s Cherry Bomb, The Jackson 5’s I Want You Back and Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy is the epitome of silly, mindless fun at the movies. I’m not sure what Marvel Studios obsession with Marvin Gaye may be currently, but after having the song Trouble Man dictate the narrative for the highly impressive Captain America: The Winter Soldier earlier this year, it seems that the powerhouse studio is repossessing old concepts and ideas, and polishing them up quite nicely. With a bit of frantic, highly busy visual effects as well as engrossing dark physical and illicit family comedy, and presenting them in exuberantly exciting fashion for people of all ages to enjoy, Guardians of the Galaxy is a clear-cut winner.

There is no denying that Guardians may very well be Marvel’s own Star Wars for a new generation of highly diverse and eager young filmgoers; the film, which is inspired by the classic series, also does a great job spoofing much of the universe brought to life by George Lucas in the seventies. Guardians is, in many senses of the phrase, a roller-coaster ride of a film whose intention of fun is never questioned. If ever Disney wanted to shape a theme park ride around any of their properties, Guardians would surely be their best bet–never mind Pirates.

Geek culture has officially taken over cineplexes, and for the most part, so will Chris Pratt, whose turn as Peter Quill a.k.a Star-Lord, will surely be the clear victor at this weekend’s box office. Quill, a rambunctious outlaw whose fame as a nuisance to the galaxy is as important as his alias, leads a rag-tag group of criminal misfits to iconic hero status. Like most heroes, Quill isn’t quite sure he knows he’s a hero yet. Stealing and collecting junk from around the universe on his filthy Corvette-like spaceship he uses more like a bedroom for alien women than as a means of transport, Quill finally steals something so powerful, it threatens to destroy the world and him, forever. But unlike Indiana Jones, Quill doesn’t have to dodge booby-traps and outrun giant boulders, instead he just has to deal with an array of peculiar characters including; a crew of awful aiming mercenaries loyal to Ronan (Lee Pace) led by Korath (Djimon Hounsou), bounty hunters Rocket (a genetically modified, wise cracking racoon voiced by Bradley Cooper), a humanoid tree Groot (voice by Vin Diesel), an assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and a murderous maniac intent on vengeance Dax the Destroyer (former wrestler Dave Bautista).

Eventually, everyone involved with Quill and the orb he has stolen are imprisoned (except the bad guys of course). In prison, the five begin unlikely friendships based on trust, sacrifice and intimidation that allows them to escape prison and set a course to a buyer, The Collector (Benecio Del Toro) who will stop at nothing to have the newly stolen possession in his hands. Upon discovering Quill’s possession of the orb, Ronan gets direct orders from Thanos (Josh Brolin) to retrieve it. Led by his muscle Nebula (Karen Gillan), Ronan and his dark army go to extensive corners of the galaxy to retrieve the orb, and kill anyone in their way.

Guardians can rest assure that it is by no means a revolutionary film to defies the boundaries of the superhero narrative and the ‘stop the bad guy from destroying the world’ cliched storyline we have come to love and hate. Thankfully, the film is a practice of clever humour and nuanced physical slapstick that make its way into the superhero genre. Pratt does a star-lording job of leading a fresh group of actors to new heights in super hero comedy as well as interacting and getting the most from his voice cast.

Director James Gunn (Slither, Super) whose previous work makes no indication at all that his fit in Marvel’s world of intergalactic superheroes would work, does a surprisingly fantastic job writing and directing obscure comic book characters. Obvious losers in the comic book world, Gunn does an amazing job of making the Guardians cinematic heroes whose allure on screen, consisting of saturated visual effects and computer generated imagery, make for one of the greatest complete ensemble of the summer. So what if his overly ambitious score is distracting to viewers during intense scenes of built up drama and highly concentrated action. Gunn, has us, from the films first frames, hooked on a feeling of nostalgia and escapism that we haven’t felt for a long time.

I felt everything pieced together well with it's comedy, action, visual display all getting in to the mix and executed wonderfully. The voice acting and acting of the actors captured my attention throughout, wanting to learn and feel more for these characters. Not the best movie plot as I would have expected from any Marvel films, in especially this year's X-Men : Days of Future Past which IMO was overrated and The Amazing Spider man 2 a major bore from it's continuation but Guardians of the Galaxy takes my adulation, an enjoyable film from the minute to the last! This movie in only one word: Funny. The most funniest movie i ever seen in this century. Great action, great characters, a bigger adventure. Remember Star Wars and Star Trek, and this is good. Recommended.

The guardians are all well presented and easily engaged with. Marvel's ability to weave comedy into it's films is also still present, giving Guardians of the Galaxy a nice balance between action and comedy. The story is sadly holding this Marvel entry back. The plot is easily forgettable and the friendship and formulation of the group of guardians is ridiculously unlikely. However the loveable guardians and impressive cast make for an enjoyable watch that combines action and comedy in a satisfying way. Expand

This movie is better than Thor 2 but not as good as the Avengers or The Winter Sholdier.Still it is a nice journey through the galaxies of the MARVEL Universe.

It's a fun movie, with heart. When is the last time you recall seeing that? It's a treat for Marvel fans, but I've taken people who weren't into comic books and they thoroughly enjoyed it, as well.

GOTG was by far much better than expected. To connect your audience to numerous characters, who they know nothing about, and drive it home isn't easily done.
