I just can't help it that certain movies that people love I can't get into and vice versa. I personally think this is James Gunn's most disjointed movie. It's weird on the 3rd and final film to throw Quill to the back burner to give Rocket center stage. I like both characters a lot but GotG3 feels like it should have been a Rocket spinoff movie after the GotG trilogy ended. A lot of the humor falls kind of flat for me and it results with the crew mostly yelling at each other for the entire movie. Is yelling funny now? On top of that there were zero surprises in the story and I think we all pretty much knew how it would play out. I secretly wished the group would all die in a blaze of glory like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or something but what we got was very safe. But how about those trailers and commercials teasing big character deaths, eh?
One big bone I have to pick about the MCU in general is how they are picking weirder and weirder stories and topics for their films and the kinda bad color scheme and design choices they are using to stick as close to old dated comics as possible, like the Kirby color palette. I understand the theme of animal testing and Rocket's friends looking like they have been tortured. But Rocket is a raccoon with some scars and some implants. Did we need a walrus with wheels or a rabbit with robotic spider legs? Kind of too goofy and freakish at the same time.
All this being said, the movie was still touching and moving and I actually liked where the film left most of the main characters. I just wish we took a different route to get there.

Director James Gunn expertly balances humor, heart, and spectacle, as the Guardians face new challenges and delve into their personal journeys. The action is spectacular, with inventive choreography and dazzling visual effects. While the narrative occasionally suffers from pacing issues, the talented ensemble cast shines, bringing depth and charm to their respective characters. However, the use of animal cruelty to evoke emotional responses is a decision that I found questionable and unnecessary. Overall, this installment cements the Guardians' place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Expand

And immortalizing them in his 'testament film' Gunn does so by facing that bitter reality that forges personalities through pain, torment to ensure that awareness of who we were, of what we have gone through and of what we choose of being and doing, you lead us to change... to grow up... With this film all heart, tears and laughter in their best balance Gunn presents us with a film that is less fun and more adult. A courageous, conscious choice that allows its characters to reach their definitive flowering. With this film (technically admirable among other things) the Guardians of the Galaxy become Great ... while remaining, always and in any case, the most ramshackle and adorable 'gang of idiots' that the universe of cinecomics has ever managed to propose to us. The most authentic, sincere and bittersweet cinematic heart-squeezing I've witnessed in recent years Expand

It is the perfect end to the guardians franchise, each character gets the perfect send-off and deep characterization. The villain is one of the MCU's worst (in a good way) and when he is finally taken down it feels very satisfying. Speaking of fight scenes, the choreography when all the guardians join up to fight is absolutely stunning. The two things keeping this from being a 10/10 are adam warlock's minimal presence despite his likable character arc and the fact that some of the jokes don't land. Expand

To me, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is without a doubt the best MCU movie to release after Avengers: Endgame--and I really liked Shang-Chi. That being said, Vol.3 does have some issues with pacing that were somewhat noticeable, as well as some characters I wish were better developed throughout the films runtime. These issues may be noticeable, but the rest of the movie is so entertaining and well done that by the end I simply didn't really care. The film is a touching yet fun end to Gunn's trilogy, and I highly recommend seeing it. Expand

They were an unknown group with heroes that were even more unknown than Iron Man (at the time). However, thanks to director James Gunn, he made them one of the most popular Marvel characters and team. There is a joke that the 3rd movie is always the worst which did occur with Ant-Man recently. Does Guardians of the Galaxy fall into this or does it deliver an epic trilogy?

One of the core themes in the Guardian of the Galaxy movies is family and loss. This is still prevalent here and still as powerful. We see the Guardians feel closer as a family than ever but also argue a lot like family too. In terms of character arcs, Peter is still reeling from the loss of Gamora, Yondu and even his mother which is making him go to the bottles. His struggles stem from self-blame for those losses and becoming more protective of his current family, The Guardians. He has conflicts with alternate Gamora who he still sees as his Gamora which she is having none of. Nebula is also a stand-out character this time with her being a member of the Guardians and not an antagonist. She has great interactions with everyone and her character arc is a great one. The character that is the major focus of GotG3 is Rocket. We finally get his backstory which is so dark and heartbreaking that it genuinely brought a tear to my eye. Mantis and Drax are still the idiot duo but they get some emotional moments and even cool scenes where they shine. Likewise, Groot, Kraglin and talking dog Cosmo are mostly just there but they get moments to shine too.

On that note, the return actors continue to do a great job in the role. They all get to flex more of their emotions due to this more emotional entry. Special praise to Bradley Cooper as Rocket who gives a stunning voice performance. Additionally, I must praise Chukwudi Iwuji's performance as the villain High Evolutionary. He gives a full-on narcissistic, zealous and unhinged performance that makes him so hateable. Another standout element from this series is the music and its incorporation of non-mainstream pop songs. James continues to use great songs such as "In the Meantime" by Spacehog and he uses them in great ways that benefit the movie. One difference this time is the use of some more popular songs such as "Creep" by Radiohead and "Dog Days Are Over" by Florence and the Machines. Nevertheless, they are used satisfyingly that I don't mind their use. There are a couple of awesome action scenes. The ones that come to mind are the fight against Adam Warlock where we get to see the guardians struggle against a powerful foe. Moreover, there is a phenomenal one-shot-looking action scene that illustrates all the Guardian's fighting prowess and it was so cool. The costumes and set design are well-designed. I love how creative the world is with the unique-looking planets and different alien species. Most of the aliens are done using prosthetics and they look great! The story itself is quite basic as it is mostly a fetch quest but the emotional payoff to all the characters' arcs is extremely satisfying. We get what feels like a proper ending to the original Guardians team that I wouldn't be angry if this is the last we see of these characters.

However, I do have some minor gripes with the movie. Adam Warlock who was teased since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is finally here but he doesn't feel that meaningful to the plot. He is just there to be a nuisance rather than a significant antagonist. Him having the mindset of a child just makes him slightly lame. One common superhero movie issue is the vague villain powers which are also here. The High Evolutionary seems to be able to use telekinesis or emit giant energy blasts but never seems to do it against the Guardians when he should. Alternate Gamora was one of the biggest challenges as it was a Gamora with none of the character development from the first 2 films. In this film, she comes off as way too cold and aggressive than the Gamora of previous films which makes her not that likeable. Although, you could argue that was the whole point as she isn't the same Gamora, plus she does have her character arc. There is also a weird Nebula and Peter subplot that is hinted at but never amounts to anything. Overall, what an amazing end to the trilogy! With MCU projects lately being kind of subpar, it was great to finally have an entry that delivers. We now have another entry in great MCU trilogies with Captain America, Tom Holland's Spiderman and now Guardians of the Galaxy. I don't know what is going to happen with the Guardians of the Galaxy movies now that James Gunn is done and moving to DC. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to what James does as head of DC and I can't wait to see what new direction the Guardians go in.

While there were jokes, I was pleased they were, for the most part, put to the side. There wasn't a random one-liner ruining what would be emotional scene. I was disappointed as a specific character I was really excited to see on screen overall takes a backseat, however who took his place in the story was very compelling and while a bit generic served his purpose well. Overall Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a satisfying end to a trilogy that will serve fans well and could be enjoyed decently well by casual viewers. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Decent movie not without it's flaws. Repeated fake out deaths were really annoying Adam Warlock's role in the movie felt clumsy and makes him feel a bit of an anti climax compared to his teasing from the end of the second one. High Evolutionary was a well acted easy to hate villain however think he was defeated too easily in the end. Loved seeing Cosmo been introduced would have like to seen her have more of an influence on the movie. Rocket's backstory and arc was excellent. Drax's arc was okay too thought Quill, Gamora and Nebula's arcs were underwhelming Craglin had a more compelling story arc than those three. Definitely better than a lot of the movies churned out in phase 4 if you liked the first 2 GotG movies I think you'll still enjoy this though it may not necessarily be your favourite. Expand

Why? What is Sylvester Stallone doing here? Doesn't Marvel have any money to invest in a decent script rather than in actors that don't belong to their universe?

Yes, the scenario is deadly boring. It manages not to be predictable but only because it is totally crazy. Some scenes got me out of the movie just thanks to ugly and random events or characters. All the scenes on Counter-Earth are confusingly stupid. On the other hand it is an interesting way to explain Rocket's background journey (which is sorely missing to the other protagonists). Unfortunately this is poorly done. And here comes the major flaw of 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' : the pathos.

The story only shines by the numerous scenes of suffering or evoking intense emotions (the (near)death of a character, a disillusionment, a missed objective, etc.) that only ends up in a silly and terrible 'I love you guys'. Because this movie fails where it says something it could otherwise show or just poetically evoke.

The pace is frantic as the movie appear to be really loud, there is no place for silence but to yell even more at our faces. Between the sound effects, the music, the dialogues and the fights, it feels like we are babies to be entertained by a bunch of keys constantly waved before our eyes.
The humour is classic, sometimes quite subtle, often honestly gross or terribly childish.

Some characters are barely introduced, notably as Will Poulter who embodies Adam Warlock : an overpowered character who doesn't bring anything but some deus ex machina patterns. His characters clearly was underused in addition to that.

The post-credit scenes are ones of the most disappointing that I saw in the Marvel franchise.

Incredible playlist as always, not too mainstream thank god. Amazing scene paced by 'No Sleep Till Brooklyn' from the Beastie Boys (shoutout to this amazing band). On the other hands, fistfights never seemed that brutal to me. In such a way that it less feels addressed to children (as the previous Marvel movies also were). Overall, the fights seem to me to be more intense, but not always in a good way since the heroes show a fickle weakness to some moves while others do not.

The special effects are obviously magnificent (since they are the ones that swallowed all the money) even if some of the fight scenes kind of look messy.

In conclusion: you don't need 150 minutes to tell a story that dumb and that fits on half a page. Also, there is no need to fake people's deaths just to save a little time for a story that already lasts what seems like an (painful) eternity.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLDR: Solid MCU film, darker, with some filler characters but fun to watch. The GOOD
Creep. That's the first song you hear in GOG vol. 3 and it is a fitting song for a group of characters that embraces weirdness, silliness and pure leaded rollercoaster fun. James Gunn perfected the summer comic-book formula and stuck to it. The tone is darker, which is unavoidable given that the origin story present focuses on animal experimentation, but it gives weight to the movie, which has been lacking in the MCU. The general opinion I heard was that this was the best MCU entry in a long time, because it was so fun to watch. The humor, the music, the over-the-top characters and settings. Is not a cinematic masterpiece but is a solid MCU film and definitely worth it if you are a fan of James Gunn style and the GOG characters in particular. In comparing the 3 volumes, I would say the 2nd is definitely the slowest paced and the least fun. I found 3 to not be that behind from no 1, perhaps the first being better just for its freshness and less worn-out humor. I found the villain in 3 to be better. The performance is over-the-top and pure evil with a solid motivation, lacking just a touch of depth. I don't remember the villain from nº1 at all. THE BAD
Some elements are wasted, though, such as Adam Warlock and the sovereigns, which are used just as a segway for the main plot to unfold. Also, Contra-earth gets a lot of screen-time with the bat-characters, supposedly to give weight to its destruction, but lacks depth, since these characters didn't talk at all. I didn't care at all about contra-earth, it was just a filler for the villain evilness. Other characters that could been fleshed out were the villain's supporters, the betrayal in the end felt adequate, but quite hollow as well. CONTROVERSIES?
I can't imagine being able to find any controversy in a silly summer film, but since it's 2023, everything is political now. Animal experimentation seems to me to be the only theme that can rustle some feathers, but I felt the way the film presented it was correct, focusing on the characters’ emotions. We never hear any character commenting on the particularities of the hard topics other than "he is just evil". The topic is not the focus, just a connection between the protagonist and the antagonist. THE CONCLUSION
A fun, silly and entertaining final(?) entry in the Guardians saga that's definitely worth a return to the cinema, if you have been away from MCU for some time. I reckon that fans of the Guardians (not counting trolls) that didn't enjoy particularly this entry is because they don't like Rocket that much, and the humor/formula is getting old to them.

Grade Solid 8 (since Metacritic won't delete repeated negative comments and some people are grading 0 "with some positive aspects" I'm forced to artificially grade it 10)

The people and critics who rated this under a 7 or 8 are smoking some bad crack. And I honestly without joking urge them to go to therapy, as this was probably the most touching mass audience flick I've seen in a long time, and I walked out of the theater with a big goofy smile on my face with just a touch of bittersweet feeling in my heart. I say this as someone who hasn't been able to get myself to see most of the recent marvel moves due to fatigue with the material. I can say this certainly isn't a kids movie, even of its not super high brow, there are some visceral and emotional scenes that might stick hard with the more sensitive and young. But if you want a good, blockbuster time, and want to see some honestly thoughtful and creative film work made for the masses, that doesn't take its self too seriously and still manages to hit those emotional notes, Get up and Go See this in the theaters right now, and bring your friends and family because that's a big theme of the movie. 9 out of 10! However, I'm absolutely thrilled to say Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is debatably the best of the Guardians trilogy and one of Marvel's best movies, period. James Gunn and the entire cast put their entire heart and soul into this film and you can feel it. Excellent acting from everyone, one of Marvel's most evil villains in the High Evolutionary, a story and writing with a perfect balance of humor, horror, and heart (something MCU higher-ups and writers can learn a few things from), VFX that do not look rushed like in too many recent MCU movies, and a very satisfying conclusion for all team members. It's not perfect, as I feel the film is a bit bloated (namely in the 2nd act) and the Adam Warlock tease at the end of Vol. 2 doesn't pay off all that well, but I had a great time with this film and have optimism that the MCU can achieve the greatness it once had in its future projects with the right writers and directors. Better than anything MCU produced since "Endgame" (and we know that bar was very low except "Spider-Man: No Way Home"). Not the best part of Guardians' trilogy, but make GoG trilogy best in the MCU. Story of Rocket is very good (and quite disturbing), lots of emotions, but the rest is good too... Story arc for all characters is quite satisfying. Nice visuals, good acting. Villain: he is sinister, terrifying and pure evil ("Kang, hello!?! He is better villain and looks like you, just saying"), but no background and good motivation make him little flat... Music was always part of GOG, but this time too much, disconnected, unbalanced and sometimes quite annoying... Probably best "one-shot" scene of all MCU! Adam Warlock: he came out too late to be relevant. I like tone shift of this movie, I like darker and more serious take to GoG, but they afraid to kill any of main characters... No agenda, just film - which is always GOOD!. Overall it's quite good goodbye: end of GOG (?) and James Gunn left MCU. It's time to close this phase of MCU. Probably my last take to MCU till "Deadpool 3"... Expand

No human being gets any credit for a single redeeming thing about this movie. They only get eternal shame for making something THIS BAD...

Disney must have sold their soul to the devil, and part of the bargain is they have to humiliate themselves by producing movies and shows this ludicrously cringe. I mean, the cringe factor is so inescapable. No way they don't know it, or expect people to actually enjoy this movie.

I'm not even joking.

Hmm.

This movie also flips between the classic family friendly schtick and the horror genre, and I feel like both were done at appropriate times and their being in this movie is also justified. It's also one of the few marvel movies where the villain is obviously motivated by something but we never know what his backstory really is, because I don't think we need to know and understand some guy who thinks animal cruelty is a justifiable means to and end. I also didn't find a lot of things to nitpick (and I don't remember any of the nitpicks I had watching) and I generally had a better time enjoying the movie than any of the other MCU movies.

This is also an ensemble cast movie, and I feel like every main character's story was portrayed and wrapped up wonderfully... except for Groot. Who or what Groot is remains unknown. How can he say so little but convey so much? Is he the embodiment of the deepest and darkest of cosmic horrors? Has Groot seen Toys Story before? None of these questions were answered in this movie, and the mysteries continue...

I was really looking forward to this one and it delivered a nice swan song, but was devoid of any truly original material. Some awesome scenes keep you tethered, but it’s an awfully long ride to take for those small moments that act as the overall payoff.

If anything, it was Gunn’s personal sendoff of the comic book property that made his career without any sequel strings attached. ‘Nuff said.

This movie is the culmination of James Gunns efforts to take the band of Misfits known as the Guardians of the Galaxy and make them an engaging and appealing cast of characters.

I loved the first movie, it is a film I can watch any time to feel good. This film isn't that, Volume 3 is more mature, more intense and considerably darker than anything else Gunn has tackled in his previous outings.

And honestly, it works. There are still moments of levity in amongst it all, but unlike a lot of marvel movies these days, the film isn't constantly trying to force humour where it doesn't belong, dark moments and moments of emotional weight are allowed their time on screen, and it means that this film can tell a far more serious story, whilst still feeling like a Guardians movie.

Visually the film looks great as always, with solid effects, captivating set pieces and reduced but refined moments of heavy action. The script is as solid as ever with believable back and forth between the characters.

I'll not look to spoil and plot points, but the villain is a blend of being truly hate-able, intimidating and well acted, to a few moments of scenery chewing, whether from direction, script or just acting choices there are a few occasions where the delivery was a little too much, but it doesn't detract from the film too much.

Overall, a really solid return to form for marvel who have been struggling lately, and one I would highly recommend, though I would say to be careful when considering taking younger children, as this one really does get quite dark and graphic.

I read the comic after Donny cates and played the game. So I do like GOTG . I'm glad they didn't made gamora the same her future version. And still is thanos daughter. But is continuing to do the same jokes also 10 years ago and even if was a good . A pointless joke a how to sit down a couch how to open a car. Among us reference really. Adam warlock didn't do anything to for the plot of the movie. You can replace for some random person and it would be the same. Like they build him up to be this almighty person as strong as thanos . Now villain was bland was he screams so much
. But with a serious story and mix with bad jokes over the movie is a messed .
