In my opinion, the best movie of the saga. It has very good things, good monsters and you can see a great change compared to the first movie, very entertaining, I recommend it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This somehow did nealy everything better than the other MonsterVerse movies. The Titan fights were way more epic and over the top (although this movie felt way less realisting than the first Godzilla MonsterVerse movie because of that), the characters felt way more likeable as they had way better motives to do what they did in the movie, the CGI was absolutely amazing and made it seem like the Titans featured were actually real and causing all of this destruction and some scenes actually made me cry (especially the one where Dr.Serizawa sacrifices himself by bringing a nuke to Godzilla so he can stop King Gidorah from basically destroying the world). If you are looking for a fun summer film this is it!
for any parents theres some swearing in there but nothing you wouldnt expect to see if this situation was really happening(your kids would have heard this).

it's a step up from the last film with nods to the older films (including using the original godzilla theme!).

The fights are satisfying and while there may be one or two moments that leave you questioning the actions of the human characters, there would be no film without those actions.

I didn't read all the bad reviews and to be true I can't understand them. I went to the cinema without too much expectation but I hoped to see more Monster fights in reference from what we saw in Godzilla 2014. And I was not disappointed. Most bad critics for the last movie were because there was just fighting by the end of the movie and now we get much more fighting, more monsters and also a "human-plot". To be honest there were moments when I sit in the cinema and thought "really?" "Why did they do this?" but for me a lacking "human-plot" in a Godzilla movie isn't this much important. I want to see Monsters fighting and I saw some epic ones. They also added classic soundtrack into the movie, it had a very nostalgic feeling. So all in all I give the movie a 9 of 10 cause I liked it very much but here and there wer some "Plot-lacking" moments (at least for me). Sorry if there are some language mistakes in the text. Best

Kudos,Warner Bros. You made me feel feelings in a movie (featuring weird-ass creatures) that isn’t a Pixar movie. But then again, the whole world cried at the death of a tinman in a bloated Superhero Movie. Eh,well…

Godzilla King Of The Monsters. Or as I’d like to call it “SHELVE OUT YOUR $50 AND SEE THIS THING IN THE BIGGEST IMAX SCREEN YOU COULD FIND”. This movie doesn’t even need a review, since there are simple things to talk about (not in a “I liked this movie because...Because!” sort of way),but who cares,I’m doing this for a passion,so let’s do this.
For starters, this the most obnoxious, cacophonic, absurd and flat-out bizarre thing I’ve seen at the movie theater so far this year. And for that reason,I love it so much. Writer/Director Michael Dougherty (writer of X2:X-Men United) and Zach Shields understand that this is such stupid material to be taken seriously in a movie of this caliber,so what they do with the Script is you may as well care about the next gargantuan Monster Battle (and not the human aspect) and call it a day,so that you can safely wait for the next round against King Kong next year.
That isn’t to say that the human aspect is boring and/or annoying. Sure, there’s one huge flaw with it,but overall, they were trying to make you feel something for them, even if there’s a Villain reminiscent of the ole’ Saturday Morning Cartoon fever. Once again,Ken Watanabe makes the exposition dump interesting to hear (whether it’s how many monsters there are in this Universe or Godzilla’s abilities etc.),Thomas Middleditch felt like he was in a different movie and there’s a part in here that, just like the rest of the 2hr12’ runtime, feels like what Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom miserably failed to accomplish (the “are you with this creature or do you wanna terminate the creature?” clichè) since Universal doesn’t know how to make movies anymore. (Pets 2 looks so bright, you guys)
As for the Monster Action, yes,it is beautiful and just what I expected: giant Monsters (full of gorgeous CG Splooj) wrecking buildings while brawling it out featuring an aesthetic so artistic, you may as well compare several shots to a painting by Leonardo Da Vinci or Michelangelo. The Monsters can also be funny at times, mostly King Ghidorah (the main monster baddie),who has a severe problem with his other 2 heads,apparently...
Suprisingly,it’s also one of the most transcending IMAX 3D experiences of all time. It’s up there with Avatar and Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse.
This is also a huge breath of air not only for all the movies that aren’t John Wick or Booksmart playing in theaters right now,but also for a Personal Crisis of mine. This weekend has been really bad for me,to the point to where I was going to abandon Art forever (it’s a long story),so I have to thank this movie in a way. Its fully artistic (and sometimes foggy) aesthetic gave me hope for the future and my comic art style.
And again, this isn’t a Disney/Pixar movie in the veins of Cars and Finding Nemo, but how they made me feel emotions for a creature wrecking **** is,and will be,SO unquestionable.
However, there are flaws, and these kinda can’t be unforgiven?
Obviously,I wanted more big action. As we were walking out of the IMAX Screening,my brother was like “you can cut the human parts, and nothing changes, since, without that,it’s just big-ass monsters fighting”,and yeah,to a certain degree…
Also,I really really REALLY didn’t care for Vera Farmiga in this movie. Besides “she’s Madison’s (AKA Millie Bobby Brown giving it her all) Mom” and “she’s the one with the MacGuffin”,there’s really nothing to care about her,as she’s just used for the story like a random piece of a 50+ piece Jigsaw Puzzle.
But besides these flaws, when your favorite Movie of 2019 is a brawl between a Giant Radioactive Monster and a 3-headed Dragon (and not the new Jordan Peele movie or the new Marvel “3hrs of Fan Service” movie),there’s really something wrong with 2019. Granted,I haven’t seen Booksmart or Apollo 11,as they still didn’t come out here in Italy.
This is the one where I wanted the cheers and/or the applauses as the movie went by,especially for that 3rd Act,which makes the movie “More vengeful than Avengers Endgame” (I’m trademarking that just now,I SWEAR,if I don’t see this quote on the Blu-ray...)
Godzilla King Of The Monsters is so far the best movie of the year, and it’s a big Plot Twist for goddamn sure.
Also yeah,stay until the Credits.

Where the film makes all kind of immoderation is in the way of destroying everything. Between games of sumptuous light devastation and ultra wide plan we can only think that photography is weak point .. Quite the contrary visually it is an undeniable strong point.

Godzilla 2! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of my favorite movies of 2019 but it was not as good as Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island. The visual effects were phenomenal and awesome especially Mothra (who was also beautiful), King Ghidorah, Godzilla, Behemoth, Rodan, and Scylla. The action sequences were magnificent and awesome especially when King Ghidorah came out of the ground and the final battle. The cinematography was excellent. The acting from Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Vera Farmiga, and Kyle Chandler was fantastic. The musical score was superb. The writing was not great and the pacing was a little slow but overall it was a really entertaining movie. Expand

Let’s begin with the actors. All the actors with exception of O’shea Jackson have pivitol roles, or at least deliver their lines, and emote their feelings with great professionalism. Mr Jackson is just a standard Jarhead with not much thought put in to his character. The plot. Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Browns character, are kidnapped by Charles Dance character to steal and use a machine that is capable of “controlling” the monsters. Charles Dances character wants to use the machine to destroy humanity, so that he can rebuild the planet, with the radiation the Titans emanate (the radiation causes the earths vegetation to grow exponentially) I want to remind you that Ghidorah (3 headed dragon) is not the main antagonist, he is just a plot device, a mindless creature that was set loose just like the Indominus Rex in Jurassic World. Charles Dance is the real antagonist. The rest of the cast aren’t really developed which isn’t bad, this is a summer monster movie after all. People complained how Millie Bobby Brown was just a 1 dimensional screaming girl. And my rebuttal is, wouldn’t you be the same in this apocalyptic crisis? I hate how leading roles who portray a normal person needs to have some “grand purpose” it just feels shoe horned in. If their is 2 things that I didn’t really like about the film, is how Millie Bobby Brown is able to steal the Orca device, and somehow know how to use it Now I’m not annoyed that she steals it, in the film, the terrorist and Charles Dances character are in a state of panic and distress. Their is no reason to guard the Orca, because 1. Vera Farmiga (supposedly) is the only person who knows how to use it. And 2. It’s the end of the world. The Orca is the last thing they want to touch, since it summoned all the monsters. (They wanted to release one monster at a time, released Ghidorah first and underestimated Ghidorahs power) I also didn’t quite understand why Vera Farmiga character wanted to use the monsters to redeem herself for the death of her son that died in the beginning during the San Francisco attack in 2014. The pacing was great! their are more monster scenes and less exposition in this one. Every scene had a reason for it to be there. If a fight wasn’t happening, the cast would explain why they are headed to a destination, or the motives of the terrorist. The CGI is good. People complain of how the scenes are dark or rainy but the reason why the films are portrayed that way is not just to show a sense of scale, but because these monsters are larger then life. The snow or rain effects are implemented to “distract” the audience to convey realism rather than a giant CGI monster. This tactic was used in other giant monster films like Pacific Rim. Movie directors want to implement humans as well as CGI so that we as an audience can get an idea of how massive these monsters are in comparison, without the human element, and just the single monster standing there, our perspective of the creature diminishes. My final thoughts are this. The plot of Godzilla KOTM is ridiculously over the top, but that doesn’t mean it’s flawed. There is a villain with a clear motive, and the protagonist have a goal to lure, direct, and even heal Godzilla to fight Ghidorah. (Because they tried to nuke them with a special weapon and it didn’t work) And that’s all that needs to be said. The radiation plot is a bit weird, but whatever. As long as the plot doesn’t contradict itself, we as an audience must not put our own sense of reality in a film devoid of any realistic properties. This is a movie of a monster fighting other monsters. Anyone who assumed that this film has a deep metaphorical meaning that makes you feel “smart” for figuring out the directors hidden messages; look else where, because Godzilla King of the Monsters Is not that movie. Just like a boxing match or a UFC fight, we watch them for the fight itself. If you want plot and motives and drama in your fights, then watch pro wrestling. Expand

Of course this is going to hurt artificially-driven people, especially those who are expecting ridiculous characterization from a GODZILLA movie.

Ignore the critics - they're so biased about what "good" is that they're hardly neutral and able to give a fair assessment. Go see this movie. It was flat out awesome!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A fantastic Godzilla movie, way better than its 2014 predecessor, with much more Godzilla, loads of kaiju action, and an actual cast of likable and interesting human characters. Bringing back the big four classic monsters from Toho, this movie brings Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and the evil Ghidorah to their full potential while staying true to their classic lore. The only downside is that you don't see as much Mothra and Rodan as you the other two monsters fighting for the fate of the world and there is one ugh scene where Godzilla and Ghidorah charge at each other, only to cut away to the monarch ship watching them fight from a distance. Aside from that, with a tremendous music score, I highly recommend anyone who loves the Godzilla movies or have an interest in the franchise to check this one out. Expand

This time, more attention is put on the monsters, giving us some spectacular monster fights. And just when you thought King Ghidorah couldn't be more of a bad-@$$ in the Toho films...surprise! Don't get me wrong, the film is far from flawless (the ending alone had me facepalming). And with some of the characters, it was like they forgot there's still a 3rd film coming. Never in the history has Godzilla been about the humans in reality. Godzilla has always been about the clash between mega sized Kaiju. If you loved Toho's Showa era kaiju movies, I really don't see why you wouldn't at least enjoy this sequel/love letter. It's a genuine blast! The many beautiful nods to the franchise (the good kind of fan service) will surely warm your heart and the wonderful score might even cause a nuclear meltdown in there. While the pure sensory overload of the last 20 minutes could border on assault to some and be considered too much, I don't really get the haaarsh criticism. I might be as bold to call the critics out and ask:
Do you even like these kinds of movies? This franchise? What exactly were you expecting?

Edwards' 2014 Godzilla - a very well made disaster film - cracked open the rusty gates of Hollywood's monster madness. Then Vogt-Roberts got to put his foot in with his stylish take on Kong, and now Dougherty finally kicked them down with King of the Monsters. Hopefully Wingard will be pushing at open doors with Godzilla vs. Kong come next year.
Fingers crossed...

It is much closer to my favourite era films including Godzilla 2000 and Giant Monsters All Out Attack than anything else and i welcome that.
The plot is of insane eco-terrorists using the monsters to destroy most of humanity to save the world.
None of the dialogue, logic or plot devices make any sense but that was true in many Godzilla films.
What we do get is a lot of non-stop action, loud booming sound and hulk smash.
It's like they took all the Godzilla lore, theories and actions and threw them into a big pot and stirred them around. They even added some new lore to the mix.
There are little nods to the old dialogue and films thrown in .
Much better than the last 2.

If you're looking for a jamboree of giant monsters fighting giant monsters then Godzilla, King of the Monsters is exactly what you're lookin gor.

Not to insult the quality of previous Godzilla movies, but the budget and modern CGI allow this film to reach a level never seen before. These are some pretty epic fights.

Director Michael Dougherty started off in animation and his previous films Trick 'r Treat and Krampus have already demonstrated his excellent visual eye, and he's still got the touch here. In comparison to the previous film, we get flying monsters, and the sky as a setting is used to great effect, including some neat storm and cloud shots. Nice use of underwater scenes, too. Some of the night or subterranean scenes are too darkly shot, but I do give Dougherty credit for excellently contrasting the darkness with bright lighting effects such as monster fire or spotlights.

Of the three American films, this feels the closest to the structure of a traditional Japanese Godzilla movie. If you weren't the biggest fan of our nation's previous attempts, either because of the lack of the big lizard's screentime in the last film or for many, many reasons for the 90's version, this may be what you're looking for.

Dougherty also seems to be a fan of the original films and there seems to be respect for the handling of the monster (no drastic deviations) and includes some franchise easter eggs. The music includes some impressive takes on such classic musical bits as Godzilla's and Mothra's themes. We get the three biggest Toho kaiju other than the big freen guy, Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidora. The first two are redesigned and I felt it worked. There were no real betrayals of the character. Ghidora on the other hand isn't really altered. They didn't really need to. He's so distinctive already: a three-headed/two-footed/two-tailed, golden dragon.

Ghidora, is Godzilla's most prominent adversary and the film made sure to hold him to that title. This is as much his film as the title character's. He's just so impressive and ferocious. hen you see a close-up of his heads, it is the only time when the CGI doesn't quite gel, but WI didn't think it was that much of an issue.

I've heard a lot of complaints about the human characters. I partially agree and disagree with these feelings. Running at 2 hr., 11min., some of their time could've been cut near the middle when they're just discussing and discussing and DISCUSSING! how to handle the monsters. I also felt the backstory of the lead played by Kyle Chandler was explained a little too quickly.

Still, I liked the cast and characters. Ken Watanabe continues to really sell his performance as the scientist in awe of Godzilla. Chandler's likable and sells his moments of anger. The movie takes some notes from Kong: Skull Island and adds a little comedy to the proceedings in the form of en Middleditch and Bradley Whitford who have some humorous lines. The eco-terrorist human villains are refreshing in that they don't feel broad like these type of movie villains often are.

Overall this movie runs too long and perhaps the human scenes aren't quite as enthralling as the monster parts. But the action, oh boy is it something to see.

With a somewhat inventive history, it has better interpretations and production values than its predecessor.

This film is the predictable sequel to "Godzilla", with the appearance of a legion of monstrous creatures called Titans. I liked, in general, the 2014 film, and I went to see this film with some interest, believing that finally Godzilla was having a more interesting treatment from the cinema. And I confess that I am not disappointed, as the film is even better than its predecessor in some important points.

The film takes the point where the previous one ended and reveals to us the efforts made since then, to create a way of understanding and reproducing the vocalizations of the monsters already awake. It is with this technology that Emma Russel, allied with a group of mercenaries, tries to wake up the sleeping monsters that Monarch monitors. She thinks it will restore a natural balance in the world, perhaps through a massacre. I confess that I found this part of the script somewhat confusing. Against her is ex-husband Mark, who argues that all monsters should simply be killed or left to sleep. It doesn't matter, the fact is that they wake up the only one who should have been left to sleep: the Guidorah hydra, the only one that has the capacity to wake everyone up and control them to slaughter Humanity. It is now up to Godzila and her fellow humans to contain this threat, even if it means the partial destruction of the world.

As in the previous film, there are good and bad things in this story. It's a little hard to believe that creatures like that would spend thousands of years sleeping without being detected by curious humans. On the other hand, the film makes good use of material from classic legends involving monsters (Scilla, Kong, the Loch Ness Monster, Hydra and others). I was not convinced by the supposed alien origins of Hydra, I think it is a little credible detail of the script. There is also a time when everyone seems to stumble over Atlantean civilization, but that is never even mentioned.

The cast's work is more enjoyable in this film than in its predecessor. For a start, I felt that there were more possibilities to connect with the characters. This bet made the film gain more interest as we feel more involved in the action and care more about what happens. Godzilla, in this respect, is a character in his own right. Among the human cast I would positively highlight Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga. Both do a good job, even though the character of Farmiga is very difficult to understand and unworthy of our sympathy. Watanabe continues to maintain the good performance that started in the previous film, ending it brilliantly. I don't know if all the merit belongs to the actor or if the screenwriter also reserved better material for the actor, but the truth is that it worked very well. Bradley Whitford, Aisha Hinds, Ziyi Zhang and Sally Hawkins do a good job of support. Millie Bobby Brown is almost left in the film and has little to do but be in danger when the script needs an extra reason for the characters to move faster.

The film maintained the good production values of its predecessor. And there is no doubt that there is a lot of money invested. A grandiose and impressive CGI, with scenarios of pure destruction everywhere, the bet on a more luminous environment, which allows the public to better see the destruction of the world and the epic battles that are fought among the human ruins. Now we see better what the first film kept wrapped in dust and shadows. The monstrous creatures also seem to me better worked and realistic. We also have impressive sound and visual effects, good post-production work, with excellent mixing and editing, well-crafted special effects, good sets, costumes and props.

Overall, it is a satisfying action and sci-fi film, with a somewhat elaborate story that works well if we don't think about it too much. You can pass the time, although it is not a work of cinema art. Godzilla will certainly continue to be a recurring monster in cinema, even though it does not give rise to really good films.

Very loud, very dumb, and very entertaining

The third film in the "MonsterVerse" franchise, King of the Monsters is a direct sequel to Gareth Edwards's 2014 Godzilla (sadly, he didn't return as director), and sets up Godzilla vs. Kong, which is scheduled for release next summer. However, whereas Edwards held Godzilla back and made the action feel smaller by focalising it through the human characters, new director Michael Dougherty inverts that formula, putting Godzilla front and centre and shooting the action in such a way as to make it seem as grandiose as possible. He isn't half the director Edwards is, but King of the Monsters works well in a braindead summer action movie kind of way. Sure, there are significant problems (all the best shots are in the trailer, the plot is laughable, the characters are so thinly sketched as to make those in the first film feel Shakespearean), but all things considered, I enjoyed it.

Five years since Godzilla defeated the MUTOs, many more creatures (now dubbed Titans) have been found in various forms of hibernation. In charge of studying and protecting them is Monarch Sciences (introduced in a fledgling state in Kong: Skull Island, which took place in 1973). However, when an eco-terrorist, Jonah Alan (Charles Dance) steals a bioacoustics device designed to communicate with the Titans, he uses it to awaken the only non-terrestrial Titan, a fearsome three-headed dragon known as King Ghidorah. Arguing that humanity has brought the planet to the point of destruction, Jonah believes that a global Titan conflict would wipe out most of human civilisation, allowing the planet the time it needs to heal. And so, as Ghidorah awakens the various Titans, Godzilla emerges to stand against him.

Godzilla was originally conceived as a metaphor for the destructive power of nuclear weaponry, and King of the Monsters has one eye on its themes too (eco disaster, biodiversity, co-existence with other species, military impulsiveness). But really, the sermonising script by Dougherty and Zach Shields is so badly put together that any thematic concerns dissipate into nothing. And yes, it does address the fact that through inattention and greed, humanity is on the brink of ensuring its own extinction. The problem is that the eco themes are so preachy, they come across as background irrelevancies at best, and distracting moralising at worst.

And there are other problems with the script. For example, not one, not two, but three characters sacrifice themselves for the greater good, resulting in none of the sacrifices really meaning anything. Another scene that doesn't work is the death of a major character, which happens so suddenly, amidst so much chaos, with the camera on even focused on them, that in the very next scene, the film has to show us their face on a monitor with the word "Deceased" written underneath. There are also far too many scenes of characters standing on the bridge of the Monarch flagship, the ARGO, spouting exposition at one another.

There are also some spatial hijinks going on. I get that the ARGO is supposed to be super-advanced, but it seems capable of flying from one side of the planet to the other in about ten minutes. Another issue is that Zhang Ziyi plays twins. Except I didn't even realise there were two of them until I read a few reviews. Sure, I noticed what I thought was a singular character appear to be in two places at once, but because the ARGO had already been globe-hopping, I just put it down to the film's lack of geographic realism. The fact that it's so easy to miss that there are twins is spectacularly bad writing.

But for all that, I thoroughly enjoyed King of the Monsters. Although the trailer did promise what the film can't deliver on (Claude Debussy and pensive apocalypticism), aesthetically, there's a lot to admire. The sound design is suitably deafening, and Lawrence Sher's cinematography has a well-judged sense of scale, especially in the 2.39:1 3D IMAX format. The film also does some interesting things with colour, coding the Titans in binary elemental shades. There are also some extraordinary individual shots (most of which have been spoiled by the trailer); Mothra spreading her wings, Ghidorah perched atop a volcano with a crucifix in the foreground, the reveal of Godzilla's lair. And the final shot is a goosebumps moment with which no Kaiju fan could possibly be dissatisfied. Purely at the level of craft, this is a hugely impressive film.

Citizen Kane it most certainly isn't, but who expected (or wanted) it to be. The key to really parsing it is to consider the context, looking at what it was trying to be. And in this sense, it's a success. Sure, the script is hideous, and Dougherty struggles to accomplish what Edwards did with ease; bring his own personality to the spectacle. However, if you approach it for what it is, a dumb summer blockbuster about large monsters punching each other, you'll like it just fine.

There's a lot of monster action, although I would have liked more. However, considering how expensive cgi is, I understand that the monsters screen time is limited. Worth seeing in theatres at least twice in order to get hyped for next movie which will hopefully fix this movie's issues. Expand

The rest of them are silly, over-the-top monster mash films catering to our inner child, and these films have a very distinct style that often transcends broad B-Movie tropes alone. Doughtery's film taps mostly into the latter, but it is also a highly enjoyable love letter to the entire franchise, from two clear references to the 1954 original to a final battle hybridizing elements of "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2" and "Godzilla vs. Destroyah." This film is a blast if you go into it with proper expectations. Remember that the "serious" side of the Godzilla spectrum has been covered in two unique ways since 2014 (one a light environmental allegory and exercise in restraint, the other a lo-fi political satire). This one, on the other hand, strives to channel the most entertaining aspects of the Showa and Heisei films; it's Toho-style popcorn entertainment at its finest, and to view it with any type of lofty critical eye is to appear synonymous with some of the film's overly serious, unintentionally funny dialogue.

Sure, there have been some truly bad films that have been bailed out this way by fans (look at you, Bay-directed Transformers films), but hollow, robotic human characters are still better than overtly annoying, sometimes racist ones. Doughtery's human characters are here to dictate the flow of monster fights, and that's what they should be doing. Do their arcs leave something to be desired? Sure. Is the film's narrative messy? Oh yes. But these complaints are all but meaningless in a film featuring a giant atomic lizard, a three-headed alien dragon, a giant moth, a pteranodon, and bunch of other ridiculous **** (keep an eye out for the woolly mammoth kaiju). Just go see this film and have a blast, and if you're out of touch with this longstanding franchise, watch any title with "vs." in the title to properly prepare yourself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A little more human story than expected based on the critics reviews. I expected at least 60-70% screen time from the Kaiju, but you take what you can get really. Overall a well done effort that only suffered from an overabundance of human cast, that could have been accomplished with about half, and in half the time making more time for the Kaiju. I don't know if they're going to go any further than Kong on this, but I wouldn't mind seeing that post credits plot expanded more. Also my favorite Kaiju of all time Gigan needs some screen love in this style, here's hoping it does well enough for Legendary and WB to cut Toho a large enough check to make it happen. Expand

First off, let me preface this by saying yes - I'm a a huge Godzilla fan. Have been for all my life, as evidenced by my massive collection of Godzila figures, clothing, and even my tattoo of the Big G that adorns my left bicep. Whether or not you are a fan will deeply impact your opinion of this movie, as it is a big, overstuffed blockbuster in the vein of the maligned Bay-formers movies. The difference here is that the creative team behind KOTM clearly are Godzilla fans, and it is reflected throughout the course of the film. From a narrative standpoint, this movie has issues. While I will say that the main characters were far more interesting than the piecemeal cardboard cutouts from the 2014 film (sans Brian Cranston), it was laughable how Mark, the film's main character, just happened to know all of the right information at exactly the right time. He was an expert in everything, and knew just what to do at the right time. Given how he was on a ship with literal MONSTER EXPERTS for a good chunk of the movie, they easily could have split his dialogue with designated expository characters, like Ken Wantanabe's Serizawa, to humanize him a bit better. It's also worth noting that sadly, like the aforementioned Bay-formers movies, a lot of humor simply doesn't land, though when it does it's outright hilarious. As is the sheer sustainability of the main cast. You can suspend your disbelief as much as you want, there is no conceivable way anyone could have survived the monster brawls that happened directly over them while the scurried about like helpless ants. But the oxygen destroyer was the biggest missed opportunity in the plot. Being the narrative heart and soul of the very first movie, it only serves to have a glorified cameo here. Now at the film's beginning, we see a Congressional panel grilling Monarch about their supposed failure to monitor these creatures - why not introduce the oxygen destroyer here, with the government saying this is monarch's last chance or this weapon will be used to wipe the beasts out? It also would have better explained why one of the film's villain does what they do, as if the beast's weren't released, they would have been easy targets for the weapon. It would created an interesting question - is there a right time to play god, and if so, when? And how much of the natural order should be preserved at the cost of human existence? Sure, the movie touches on these questions, but in the film's current state, there is something more to be desired. Beyond that though, this movie served as a love letter for Godzilla fans, by Godzilla fans. The biggest issue from the 2014 film was Godzilla's was relegation to a supporting roll in his own film. That is remedied here, as the conflict between him and the enigmatic Monster Zero is the core of the film's plot, as the two battle for supremacy in their prehistoric food chain. Most importantly, the personalities of the monsters are in-line with their original counterparts. Supporting monsters Mothra and Rodan are handled with care and respect, although the latter does unfortunately get lost in the shuffle after his epic debut. It is understandable though, given how packed to the gills this movie is with action set-pieces and visual eye-candy. To a normal viewer, this may seem like chaos for the sake of chaos, but to fans like me, this is Hollywood simply making up for lost time.

Whether it be the phenomenal score that features modern renditions of the classic Akira Ifakube tunes, the sound design that brilliantly recreates the sounds of these titans, or the cutting edge visual effects, the creative team learned from their Eastern forefathers to deliver a product that honors Godzilla's legacy, something that can hardly be said of the previous two American iterations. Your mileage may vary, but as a lifelong fan, and especially as a Massachusetts resident and Red Sox fan, this movie, while certainly not perfect, was a grand slam.
