This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A surprising opening for fans who have wanted to see the clash of the titans. We are established immediately in the narrative we have waited to see. A powerful actor effected by Godzilla. He comes crashing into frame in the beginning of the movie and it looks it is competent enough to shock you. If you almost had a heart attack at that encounter just wait till you get to the underwater oil tanker base of Monarch Before that we must adjust this films story with the correct characters in the wrong role with Emma Russell clearly a woman who is about to snap because her perfect daughter who is just like her needs to have been the one killed by Godzilla. A brother to Madison son of Emma and friend to Mark Russell that is part of the family and is there in the background. Mark Russell is portrayed as a grieving father who has enough back story to carry the entire film. Vera Farmigas lines we parody "..she was my world .. she was my everything "She was so important to me from this speech which the movie in whole hinges upon the movie can draw itself to the amazing art FILM narrative and achievement We can get to what I have been waiting for my whole life the monster duels the battles the duels and the incredible engagements of monsters I grew up watching on black and white television for so many years. The filmmakers clearly thought about this when scaling planning making and choreographing the fights. We go into the part of the film where doctor Monarch doctor Vivienne Graham doesn't get killed off by a monster because shes too interesting a character When Godzilla comes close to Monarchs oil tank underwater zone and base Rick Stantons line what are you DOING DUDE is cut to go into experiencing Godzilla in his full We run ahead to when Emma realizes Gojira has taken control from her and she is the person who chooses Madison russell's decisions and owns her plan and her choices and her scheme. Mark Russell and the crew are played exactly the same until the end of the movie when Emma who has refused to use her invention to save people and help the earth instead using the orca to strengthen gojira the Godzilla gojira battle goes to plan and remains as awesome Emma Russell and Mark have to work to save the world set aside their pain love their son and drop their differences to save the earth Getting to the crucial point Mark arch's fully by grabbing the orca sending his wife his Son and the monarch leaders into the air He is engulfed he is confronted by the rage he has for Godzilla for his lack of options & by his acceptance of the path GODZILLA and this solution He is really and metaphorically covered engulfed and surrounded by his grief and grabs the orca surrounded by red sox stadium surrounded by Godzilla and surrounded by yellow lightning exclaims in recovering from his grief and while acting drunk "HAIL TO THE KING" Godzilla acts in the film the nuclear bomb explodes saving the world from the alpha titan GOJIRA We of course later see on monarchs plain emma russell along with all the great monarch and powerful female and Women pose Emma posing ANTAGONIST And we have a reminder and of course a memorial for doctor Serizawa The scene we remember the movie we cut back to is the yellow lightning of GOJIRA screaming in MASSACHUSETTS Yellow lightning of Gojira screeching across FENWAY and our past patriots making world history SURROUNDED BY CLOUDS High Five watching the yellow lighting Patriots high five IN THE clouds This film has everything you dreamed of seeing Godzilla vs GOJIRA the alpha GOJIRA titan landing upon Corcovado Christ the Redeemer and the brilliant MARK RUSSELL line to see Godzilla defeat the Alpha titan GOJIRA and save all humanity and the earth. Godzilla 2: King of Monsters surrenders with the primacy of the audio visual show that promises and succeeds in getting and exhaling a few sighs from fans of the character who should be extremely satisfied with what they saw, is a great fun uncompromised, has a scene post credits in the end that is a very nice hook / reference.

I thought the humans were relatively good even though there wasn't as much character depth to most of the side characters. So it shocks me to see this movie being reviewed so poorly even by those who say they are fans of the monster, and I think the reason for that is because of the bar the MCU has set for cinematic universes. Marvel mastered character and character development having us fall in love with (almost) every character for a different reason. This has made people expect the same from any other universe that comes out nowadays and its a double edged sword. It has made film makers realize that we expect higher quality in our movies but it also leads to good movies (like this one) being chastised for not living up to the legacy that marvel has left behind when they do not need to. The characters and plot in this movie may not be much to write home about but there is at least some level of emotional depth with the human characters and the monsters alike. And as stated before it builds great lore for these gigantic creatures and even gives them distinct personalities. Yet still the critics that went into the movie wanting deep characters and story will often say its nonsensical or just say it didn't exist in the film at all. It is the complete opposite though and if your not one to harp over deep story lines and character development you will find this film to be amazing. And f you are a long time Godzilla fan you may just tear up from the film. Overall the movie was a joyride from the start to the end and i wasn't let down in the slightest. Don't let the the critic's words sway you into not seeing this movie if you we're looking forward to it. A movie doesn't always need deep characters and a philosophical plot to be fun. Sometimes it just needs to be fun. 8/10 from me no question. Expand

But I liked the last Kong and announce King Ghidorah. During the screening, it turned out that the new film adheres to classic films with both on-screen action and a brilliant soundtrack. It is probably the music that finally won my heart. Old songs in a new arrangement, great monsters and great fights! Again, for two hours I could feel my childhood. That was the goal, right? Expand

The problem of this film is typical in all Godzilla films. With all these monsters bashing each other out, who needs the human characters? They are played well, but at the end of the day, they are clearly not the focus of the movie. As such, the unfolding story line rings hollow, as clearly they are just padding until the next set piece. On a more positive note, the monsters...wow. Seeing Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra on screen using modern CGI is a sight to behold and worth the price of admission. Expand

The plot was okay – I could have done without the “climate change” talk – we don’t need Godzilla getting ensnared in current events. He is timeless. But the cast was very good as usual and the plot, although a little muddled, moved along. I also thought Godzilla himself looked and sounded more convincingly alive than in previous films in the series, and the cast had some very talented actors (for example, Charles Dance, Sally Hawkins, and Ken Watanabe), which helped. A lot of fun and nicely done. Expand

Was it what I hoped for? Sure! Was it more? Unfortunately not but with that being said Godzilla: King of the Monsters was a good film. It has its narrative faults and obvious character faults but the special effects, fight scenes, shots and overall tone are very good. I really enjoyed Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Charles Dance and Vera Farmiga though the problem with this film to me was that it introduced too many new characters, most of which are irrelevant to the story and end up taking away time from an already weak central plot involving The Russells, Monarch and Charles Dance's eco-terrorist group. On top of that, although I consider this a minor complaint because in the end it served a purpose but I also felt overwhelmed by all the monsters in this movie when I feel like they should have just stuck the conflict between Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidora (whose a more convincing villian than Charles Dance's character unfortunately) because it overstuffs the plot but at the end I can see why it served a purpose. Still, I found King of the Monsters to be a good film. Unfortunately it suffers a bit from sequelitis as its nowhere near as good as the 2014 Godzilla, which gets undeserved flack from people whod rather watch a 3 hour Michael Bay Transformers porn than watch a slow burning, intensely paced monster movie similar to Jaws or the original Godzilla from the 50s. I'm still excited for Godzilla v Kong and further Monsterverse entries just as long as they pump the brakes now while trying to build these monsters and characters trying not to get lost in the shuffle. It takes place several years after the Godzilla and MUTO fight in San Fracisco and is about more monsters being released and beginning a fight for dominance. If that doesn't sound like a fun concept to you than you will not like this movie. I liked the 2014 film just fine but had a problem with there being only one real scene with Godzilla in all of his glory, so I was hopping this film would feature more of him and the other monsters and oh god this film certainly delivered on that front. The monsters design are all brilliant and the fights are all awesome. However this film does come with it's own fair share of problems. Like I said the concept is fun however the over all story get's kind of ridiculous and over complicated. You see they try to set up the debate that these giant monsters might be here to put humanity in check and save the environment by killing millions of people. Which is just stupid. This is a giant monster movie no one is going to buy a ticket to this film hoping to hear a debate on the human problem. They're going to see a giant monsters kill each other. Add that to the fact that most human characters are as generic as possible and some parts of this film feel like time wasters. Yet these problems don't bother me that much because there the problems I've come to expect from a Godzilla film. In conclusion if your a fan of Godzilla than you'll like this film if not than there is nothing here for you. Expand

However, they use the flaws of this movie to put it way down. Expect the flaws, but the movie has incredibly redeemable qualities. The titan fights and all scenes that has anything to do with Titans are incredibly entertaining. The actors were considered the biggest flop in this movie (rightfully so), but a lot of other lead actors redeemed some of that. The film has great pacing to be entertaining without exhausting the viewer, which is perfect for a summer blockbuster.

Anyway, to cut to the chase, is the movie better than the 2014 reboot? No. Is it a lot more entertaining? In a lot of ways yes. The movie was cliche, some bad acting, and felt a little too simple at times. But has all the qualities to be a fun summer blockbuster, this movie is obviously not seeking to be one of the best Godzilla movies ever. It’s just supposed to be a bunch of fun and if you’re a classic Godzilla fan, you’d understand that a lot of Godzilla (not all) movies do just that. They just have a bunch of fun. Unlike the 2014 reboot where it was fun and cool yet also very serious and had more realistic plot layout. That film was a better quality movie. But I’ve never seen a movie rated so low for the cons while not praising the pros nearly at all.

Go watch this movie and watch it for what it is. It’s a classic fun-to-watch Godzilla kaiju battling movie that shouldn’t be taken so seriously.

This is NOT for fans of drama and character development. This IS for people who want to have a good time and watch Godzilla smash a three headed dragon into a skyscraper. It’s well made and very entertaining, and much, much better than the critics say it to be but not by much. I loved the lighting, the stage like locations and, although it got a bit hard to watch at points, the shaking edits. The colour grading in this film is spectacular. The limited blue and red colour scheme gives it an ancient, colossal feel to it.
The monsters we’re alright. I found monster zero to be dull, to say the least, Godzilla was okay, in my opinion Mothra was the best of them. But the monsters aren’t everything. The actors do their best to ask with a poorly written script and try to pull off characters that really in the end don’t have a character. Millie Bobby Brown pulls it off well. I definitely don’t agree with this point as much is the critics, The characters are simply meant to push the plot along and they succeed in this.
It succeed on the title at least, it very much is Godzilla: King of the Monsters! But in the end it results a spectacle of colours, lights and Godzilla breathing blue fire out of a dragon head, so if you are into that, go see it (definitely in IMAX)!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. With a mediocre plot and some fairly sizable holes that you simply need to accept and move on, yet again, the monsters are the stars in this third installment of the Zilla Universe. Brand new monsters with some compelling mythology make this movie worth the ticket price. The movie fails to deliver any real stand out performances by the human cast, but who watches this for a good story? Am I right? The exciting, new, powerful and honestly, fantastic Titan battles left that pleasing feeling of satisfaction at the end of the 2 hour and change run time. The movie left an opening for more of these monumental kaiju standoffs and I cannot wait! Tip a forty for Boston. Let's do a Euro-trip next. Expand

When I watched the 2014 Godzilla movie I was less than impressed as can be seen from my review here.

When watching this one I felt it was marginally better.

True to the Hollywood standards today, or perhaps lack thereof, the script writers just had to try and squeeze in a lot of green **** about how we destroy the planet and something has to be done bla bla bla.

Interesting enough though, the way it was done, actually made the green fanatics the bad guys in the movie. Whether that was intentional or the writers was too stupid to realize it I do not know.

The story is essentially about how one green fanatic in particular releases the “Titans” as they are called in the movie and uses them to wreak havoc, killing millions, to “balance things” and start a new world. That is your typical green fanatic although with a bit more means than usual to implement his deluded fantasies. Of course Godzilla, with the help of a few clear minded humans, comes to the rescue. That’s pretty much it. As I wrote, a typical substandard Hollywood script.

What makes this movie better though is that the implementation is not so **** full of absolutely stupid and unintelligent sequences as the 2014 movie. The implementation is actually not that bad. The action sequences are really quite good and there’s plenty of big ass monsters in this movie.

I also quite liked that cool super-carrier airplane that the Monarch crew flew around in.

As despicable as the previously mentioned green fanatic is, the role was nicely implemented as well as the main protagonist and most people around him.

The part about kick-starting Godzilla after he was wounded by detonating a nuke in front of his nose was a bit silly though. So was the hole it’s to hot and radioactive for drones as well as for a nuclear submarine so let’s send in a guy on foot. Seriously?

Also the after scenes where life magically sprouted everywhere the Titans had wrecked havoc was more than a little stupid.

If this hadn’t been a cool giant monster movie with a lot of special effects I would have scored it a lot lower. However, I am a sucker for these kinds of movies and I really like Godzilla. I even watched some of the old black and white movies when I was a kid.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While I'm generally happy with most of the movie like the soundtracks, the battles, and especially the monsters, this one is less memorable than 2014 Godzilla. While having more screen times, 2019 Godzilla fails in making impact such as the first time it unleashed the atomic breath back then. I can absolutely said that the main cinematic MVP in this movie is Mothra, not the Godzilla itself. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Would’ve said that the monster’s part saves this movie from being bad. However, the human drama most of the time is related to the monsters. Is that a bad thing? No, well...for most of the time but even with all of it’s flaws( wich aren’t too much) this movie is really solid and enjoyable, specially if you’re a Godzilla fan. Expand

I’m sorry but I’m in the camp of “too many monsters”. By the time the final battle came, I was just waiting for the movie to end. The bad dialogue didn’t help either. But as a popcorn spectacle movie, it’s fun and edge-of-your-seat.

It suffers from some so-so acting, specially the mom in my opinion (the daughter did a great job however, and I loved dr. stanton, he's my favorite) the fight geography and choreography is a little hard to follow, the script is a little weak, and characters I feel were important are killed without having proper arcs and/or suddenly. I only realized one of them died when I watched a YouTube review if this movie. the reason for the monsters fighting isn't really explained either. and if it is, it's not communicated well and I missed it. is Godzilla fighting to keep things in check? are they all just jockeying for position? idk in short, great movie to throw on the tv for the popcorn value, but nothing deeper or more meaningful. a high budget sharknado. Godzilla and Kaiju fans like me will adore this film. However, it tries too hard to delve into it's human characters motivations, which are completely outlandish and taken too seriously. The movie knows what people want, Sci-Fi Kaiju Battles, and it absolutely delivers. It's just a shame that it doesn't entirely capitalize on that concept. Instead it tries to make more of it's human characters than it needs to, resulting in annoyingly boring sections of the movie a chore to sit through. In a desperate attempt to make the human's in a monster movie more serious and relevant than what they need to be, it almost misses the point of it's own outlandish movie plot. Almost.

Whenever Kaiju are on screen, the movie shines and is incredibly rewarding and entertaining, making you remember why exactly you wanted to watch this film, and ultimately, you will be more than satisfied. After separating the wheat from the chaff, you see a Godzilla film, a worthy one at that. Therefore, I am more than pleased with King of the Monsters as a massive fan of the franchise, I just wish the overly serious yet insanely stupid human elements didn't drag it down.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters addresses the latter problem by upping the number of monsters and fights almost to an excessive extent. The former criticism, though, is not addressed well, as the human characters somehow got worse and feel downright comical at most points in their decision-making and dialogue. While the sometimes stunning action and cinematography truly make this movie look and feel awesome, the plot and development is laughable and paper thin, bringing the movie into Transformers-lite territory. King of the Monsters shows many moments of promise and beauty in its cinematography and kaiju designs and battles, its poor excuse for characters and a story keep this movie from being anything more than a pretty fun but also mindless summer popcorn blockbuster. what makes it bad: a lot of it is very messy which can make it difficult to tell what is going on. if you thought pacific rim was hard to follow at times, then this is worse in that respect. the pacing is not great, and there are lots and lots of characters with not enough real focus on any of them so it's hard to care about them a lot.
what makes it good: fanservice! there is a lot of good stuff here for people who like godzilla stuff. at some points during the movie there are some amazing shots and some really cool events. the story of the monsters themselves is interesting and well done.

Are you going into this movie as a fan of the 2014 Gareth Edwards film who appreciated the sensitive and grounded approach to the larger-than-life ideas therein? If so, you may be sorely disappointed by the rather uncouth and matter-of-fact nature of things this time around. Are you walking in as someone who was tremendously let down by the 2014 predecessor's lack of action and kaiju combat in favor of dry character work and performances? Because you may have just gotten a movie that flies in the face of all that, for better or worse. Are you somewhere betwixt these two groups, enjoying the 2014 film for what it was, but understanding the need for certain elements to change? Well you might just end up in the camp that this reviewer's planted his flag within. This movie is fine. The action is thrilling and brilliantly rendered, featuring a hefty number of moments that'll make you smile. The character work is spotty at best, featuring some of the more head-scratchingly misguided attempts at depth I've seen in a while, but you're at least given a protagonist that has more emotional drive than the 2014 film did. The performances get the job done, with some actors bringing a bit too much to the table than others (I'm looking at you Bradley Whitford). And the lore is -- as always -- sopping wet with imagination and creativity. In short, it's imperfect, but a worthwhile time at the cinema, to be sure. Expand

Countless easter eggs and nods both subtle and conspicuous pepper this film, constantly showing the love the director and his team have for this franchise as musical highlights from Toho's 60s and 70s blare loud and proud. It's a spectacle to behold, especially for fans, but unfortunately the end product is a bit like the 2005 King Kong: a bit too lovey for its own good. KotM has so many monsters, people, and references to cycle through that it has to move at a blistering pace, jumping from one scene to the next with almost no time at all to stop and let things sink in. Major plot points come and go in the blink of an eye with no explanation and character arcs both human and titanic are forced to play out in fast forward. The big epic fights that're meant to be the main attraction are constantly interrupted and obscured by rain, smoke, nightfall, and excessive color grading. The human characters who butt in and out of these big fights are thankfully more emotive, more memorable, and less obtrusive than the ones from the 2014 film, but the cast is far bigger than it needs to be and half of it seems to exist just to deliver Marvel-esque quips and one-liners, many of which fall completely flat. The main thing saving the film is its kaiju cast- all the monsters have been beautifully updated and redesigned and given distinct personalities that are allowed to shine through without any dialogue. They're genuinely fun to watch, even when they're poorly lit and interrupted, and the interactions between them are the real meat and potatoes of the film; as absurd as it sounds, simply cutting out all the human bits and giving them more screentime would've been much more entertaining. KotM isn't bad either objectively or for what it is (a simple drive-in popcorn flick) and it's hard not to smile at all the love poured into it, but ultimately it promises much, much more than it delivers, and depending on what you're looking for that can be either frustrating, disappointing, or both. +Interesting 'anime style screenplay'
+Great cheesy moments

-While monster fights are interesting and epic in scale, the choreography feels a little too faithful to the original movies and uninspired (opportunity missed??)

My expectations were quite high going into watching as I had heard a lot of hyped up reviews for how great and faithful GKOTM was to the series originals... While I can safely praise the cheesy screenplay for feeling just fun enough to plod through, the action set pieces and titan choreography seemed to feel uninspired in my eyes... To me though the bar for giant monster battling was set high in 2013's pacific rim (I just love the sensation of weight visible (and audiable) when the kaiju and yaegers simply move let alone brawl....). Still if your in the mood or just a fan then I am certain you will find something here to enjoy.

They should have just done 2 hours of monster fighting and left the humans cast out of it.

Asking Hollywood to craft a complex and thought-provoking human narrative is just asking too much of it in this day and age. They might as well be waiving a white flag of surrender and begging us to grade them on special effects alone. Tywin Lannister is the only one who delivers here.

If you're looking for a lazy summer film to get you into the comforting shade of the theater, this will do the job, provided you turn your brain 'off' before you enter. If you are looking for something intelligent weaved in-between the monster fighting, this ain't it.

The second Godzilla movie had an amazing trailer with the Clair de Lune orchestral song. It still is one of the best trailers to come out in a long time. The trailer was so good that I decided to watch this movie in the theatre on day one in IMAX. However, I came out of it with a mixed thought towards it. So has my feelings towards the movie changed or do I still have the same mixed thoughts?

The biggest praise I have is that they used Godzilla monsters from Japanese movies. The MUTOs from Godzilla (2014) were fine but not memorable. Here the monsters are all different and unique. Mothra looks beautiful, Rodan looks scary and Ghidorah looks grand. They all have great monster designs that stick in your mind with Ghidorah looking like he could take on the legendary Godzilla. The CGI, visual effects and sound effects are all phenomenal too. Another big problem in Godzilla (2014) was the lack of Godzilla and that has been addressed. Godzilla appears way more and does a lot more fighting this time.

On that note, the action scenes are still exhilarating to watch. It is also better choreographed than the previous Monsterverse movies which mean more exciting titan action. Visually the movie is also gorgeous to look at thanks to the cinematography by "Lawrence Sher". Some stunning wide shots illustrate the massive nature of these Titans. The director also uses brighter colours, plus a lot of colour blue, compared to Godzilla (2014) which makes a lot of the scenes more visible including the action scenes. I also really loved the score by "Bear McCreary" who incorporates the classic themes in Japanese Godzilla into the movie. It elevates a lot of the scenes and makes them feel grander.

Unfortunately, the story is incredibly stupid and ridiculous. Previous Monsterverse movies had simple plots that just revolve around getting from point A to B with the monster story happening concurrently with the humans. However, here the humans play a central part in what is happening with the monsters causing the focus to be on the humans rather than the titular Godzilla. The main plot shoved in our face is the human family, the ORCA (a magical plot device that affects the Titans), and some eco-terrorist. The human family soap drama is genuinely dumb and the ORCA is constantly used to do whatever BS the plot requires. There are also some eco-terrorist and their plan is evil yet the movie somehow wants to justify their plan when it's dumb. These stories hog a lot of screen-time and it especially affects the pacing in the second act by spending too long on it that I was getting bored. It's made worse by the fact that the characters are no longer just uninteresting but downright hateable. Dr Mark Russell (Kyle Chandler) is the main lead who lost his son because of these Titans and hates them including Godzilla. He gets an arc where he likes them more now because the plot needed him to be I guess? Dr Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) is Mark's ex-wife who believes letting all the Titans wake up is going to be great for the world. Her plan is stupid and because of her a bunch of people died yet the movie still want the audience to feel for her. Madison Russell (Millie Bobby Brown) is Mark and Emma's daughter who sides with her mum but then changes her mind. None of these 3 main characters sounds remotely interesting but you're going to spend the most time with all these 3. There are also some other one-dimensional supporting characters including some from the original Godzilla (2014) but they are all incredibly bland as well.

On that note, the tone of this movie is quite comedic and more far-fetched compared to Godzilla (2014). Sadly none of the quips is very funny and it can even clash with the moments which are meant to be serious. For example, there is a scene where the human characters found something astonishing so a natural reaction is "oh my god" but then another character adds "Zilla.." to the end of it and I cringed from the stupidity of that line. There are a couple of other moments that feel like that and it just doesn't work. Some death scenes occur which the movie attempts to make sad but it doesn't work as the human characters are forgettable and it then gets overshadowed by jokes or dumb dialogue.

Overall, Godzilla King of the monsters is very silly and tries to incorporate a serious human story in it but fails miserably. Nevertheless, the visual effects and the monster battles are still great which in the end might be all that people want. After watching this though, I want a movie with better human characters though because the Monsterverse so far still can't provide it.

The script for this film is absolute garbage. The dialogue is so forced and unnatural that it makes you roll your eyes everytime someone talks which obviously is a large portion of the film. The characters are also a huge detriment to the film. They don’t have any personality and are defined by their “one character trait” which is a running problem in Warner Brothers Monsterverse. Unfortunately, this one character trait robs the audience for feeling an emotion towards character deaths in the film. Some of the action scenes aren’t amazing also. For some of the action scenes, I can’t tell what is going on or who is who because the camera is shaking around a lot. One final thing is that I feel Millie Bobby Brown wasn’t great in this film. I like her in Stranger Things but I felt like she just wasn’t trying. Here are the positives of the film. One major thing is that the sound design, sound editing, and musical score are phenomenal. The film sounds amazing. I believe that this film could be an early contender for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing at the Oscars. The musical score is just outstanding to listen to. Most of the actors do a pretty good job even though they were given a terrible script. Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, and Ken Watanabe were standouts from the film. The other half of the action scenes are pretty good and it’s awesome to see huge monsters fighting each other. Most of the visual effects are really good especially the character designs. Godzilla, Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rhodan look incredibly lifelike. The cinematography is good but it’s nothing special. The tone throughout the film remains consistent and the film is paced pretty well. It starts fast and moves from each scene quickly. Overall, Godzilla: King of the Monsters has some amazing sound editing, editing, and score with great visual effects but lacks a good script or compelling characters. I give Godzilla: King of the Monsters a 6/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now, most of you would think that the Godzilla sequel would be a lot better than the original from 2014 after watching 3 trailers and a few Tv Spots. To be honest, I was thinking the exact thing but after I watched the movie (at midnight), I was confused with how would I rate the sequel. It though was entertaining, but it also had various issues. The sequel showed us a lot more entertaining content, many Kaiju monsters made an appearance here, Rodan, Mothra, Ghidorah and countless others (not really!). From the trailer, we could see them waking up from nature and started battling without knowing where the good side is and the bad one is. The various issues I mentioned came from the performances, the acting. The movie starred Kyle Chandler as Mark Russell, Vera Farmiga as Emma Russell, Milly Bobby Brown (Y’all know her as Eleven from Stranger Things) as Madison Russell and of course, Ken Watanabe as Dr. Serizawa as he appeared in the first movie. Gotta be honest, the acting was really disappointing, the movie didn’t even care about them and they just acted like people who wanted to be a machine or a robot (maybe?). Their screenshorts weren’t much but I’ve gotta say, Milly Bobby Brown wasn’t as good as I thought she was going to be, like she hadn’t much to do in this movie. All she did was to sit down and weep until something came as a surprise, even when she came back home, she screamed and also covered her ears, even when Ghidorah was going to kill her, she didn’t run away, but instead, she screamed. The other casts, they didn’t had much to do as well and I was a bit disappointed in Ken Watanabe as Dr. Serizawa. He didn’t lead much in the movie, it was left to the military and we didn’t get much screenshots of him. Another big problem about the acting is the deaths, and these deaths are no unnecessary. It’s not like normal deaths. They’re deaths of the main characters, some made sacrifices and some accidentally died. However, the characters who were alive didn’t think about it like they’re robots, a non-human being. They didn’t even have a reaction, especially when Dr. Serizawa made his and Dr. Vivienne Graham (Sally Hawkins)’s. Chen (Zhang Ziyi) was just like “for Serizawa” without tears when we got to the final battle. In short, the acting was emotionless. The script was also kinda badly written as there was not much for the characters to say, to discuss about some issues they’re having. It’s just that the human characters can talk so they need to have more to discuss. I did hear some of their long discussions but they were a bit confusing and non-fans would find them annoying and hard to understand as they don’t know what’s going on with the movie. Everybody is true, the whole movie was completely entertaining and that’s a bit of a problem. We could see lots and lots of action sequences. Monsters here and there, biting others, eating and destroying buildings (that’s what American Godzilla Movies are meant to be for fans). There were lots of military forces on Godzilla’s side and everything went chaotic. And the final battle was 98% epic with spectacular cinematography and outstanding visual effects (98% AWESOME). I was really impressed with what they’ve done for 5 years (well, not much really!). The problem is that they had like too much screenshots on the battles but the monsters still didn’t get enough screen time and so were the human characters. That’s a really big issue here. Therefore, many scenes that were unnecessary scenes are completely forgettable, even the jokes I laughed at, I could barely remember. It’s just something that should be added to the “Deleted Scenes”. That’s everything I could review about the sequel. It was extremely exciting, entertaining with its EPIC battles and jaw-dropping VFX, but those things couldn’t make the story any better. The key to a good story was a really big chance but the chance was wasted over the disappointing performances and as a Godzilla fan, I was half positive and half negative so let’s just call this mixed. Some characters seemed not as fully fleshed out or even needed from a story standpoint and a lot of missed opportunities in regards to some sort of comedic elements to break up some of the monotony. Any opportunity to engage the audience, emotionally, fell flat by characters that are pure exposition machines. That being said If you're going for a purely monster fight kind of movie in that regard it was a fun watch, especially on a big screen to take it all in. In the end though, I would suggest renting instead of shelling out the cash to see this in theaters. Expand

Yeah, the humans characters were all pretty boring and dull and they kinda sucked but that’s pretty much what all of the Godzilla movies are like. Most of them go like this: A monster shows up. Military and scientist people talk. A monster shows up. Military and scientist people talk. A monster shows up and maybe fights another monster. Repeat. Godzilla: King of the Monsters was pretty much a modern big-budget version of a classic Godzilla movie. Godzilla movies don’t appeal to everyone so this movie isn’t for everyone, but as a Godzilla fan I got my fix. It was so cool to see all the things I saw these monsters do in the old movies with modern effects. There were a ton of really cool references to the older movies, references to King Kong (which I’m so happy is just a part of the Godzilla universe now) and new monsters, not just the big four that were advertised! The story also had some pretty interesting themes and ideas having to do with environmental disasters, which is a fitting update for these movies. The age of the atomic bomb is over. What do these monsters represent today? The monsters were also surprisingly expressive, you could tell what they were thinking and feeling and they showed a lot of personality. There were some issues I had with the movie, it cuts away during the monster fights a bit too much, sometimes it focuses on the human characters for a little too long (the old movies rarely exceeded 100 minutes. This movie is over 2 hours.) and some of the fights were hard to see, but overall I think this is a solid Kaiju flick! If you aren’t a fan of Godzilla, I don’t recommend this movie. It technically isn’t a great movie. However, if you are a fan of Godzilla and love all the classics, I think you’ll get a kick out of it! I sure did, and I can’t wait until Godzilla vs. Kong! Expand

My friend is a huge fan of kaiju movies and he showed me the trailer of this movie when it first came out. I was struck in awe. I couldn't believe something so legendary looking was actually going to be made while I live. The poster and promotional materials were also looking so much filled with fantasy. I watched the 2014 Godzilla to watch this. If you've seen my review of that movie, you will know how much I loved it except for the human part. But when I watched this movie, I was very dissatisfied.
The problem that plagues Godzilla: King of the Monsters is the humans. First of all they are talking so much. The whole time all we see is talking, talking and even more talking. First Madison and her mother are talking, then the army is talking, then the eco terrorists are talking. And finally when Godzilla and Kong Ghidorah finally start fighting, then seen cuts to the humans running. Look, I have no problem with humans being shown in Godzilla movies. But it should be like the 2014 movie, where humans are only shown when the monsters are walking and not during the fights.
The human plot of this movie is very pathetic. The eco terrorists had a point and I completely agreed with them, but as it was shown how they are supposed to be the bad guys was not very surprising. I have never understood movies which villify eco-terrorists. Like, why don't they ever explain why they are supposed to be bad? Take a moment, think about valid points and just speak them out. It doesn't have to be "you're the bad guy boo-hoo!". This only makes us feel like the bad guys won.
The CGI, however, is where this movie is an absolute win. I will give it full marks for that. I just love all the fight scenes from it. When Rodan seemed to have killed Mothra I was feeling very bad for her, but seeing how she made a comeback was very surprising. The part where Rodan and King Ghidorah fight the planes was also very cool. I really wanted to show that scene to someone else (sadly I'm the only person who is interested in Monsterverse and those who are interested already watched the movie before me).
Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a movie that completely tested my patience. It was fun, I'm gonna remember all the monster scenes, but I don't think I'm ever gonna have the courage to watch this ever again. Some things are best left in memory, and that's what I'd say about this movie. It's a good thing Godzilla vs Kong removed the bad parts and made what we wanted to see. That's how this franchise is supposed to be, not like this one.

This film is visually stunning, and it's one of the most Incredible looking films I've seen in a long time. But it's not helped by the fact it's got very little action between scenes of human drama scenes. And the action that is there is pact mostly at the end of the movie. Remember the sequences of the monsters shown in trailers? That was literally all the scenes we got of the monsters. There were no other scenes of the monsters in the film after that. I wish there was more instances in the film where Godzilla was fighting other monsters. Maybe have an arc where he is recruiting other monsters to fight alongside him in the climax, and not just Mothra.

But yeah, overall this film fell slightly below average for me. That doesn't mean it's a bad film! Feel like I always need to say that. It just means it has a lot to be desired, more so than other films that do the same things it does better and in more spades.

This leads to a battle royale scenario where in order to survive, mankind must work with Godzilla to defeat this threat and bring back a natural order to the world.

This time around, they seemed to take on board some of the criticism from the previous movie about not using more of the classic monsters Godzilla used to fight in the Toho franchise, so this time they unleash far more titans on to the world. On one side we have Godzilla's partner the great benevolent Mothra showing off her gorgeous wing span and giving us a lot of moments to just be in awe of her beauty. Then on the other we have the destructive King Ghidorah, with his monstrous scale towering over cities raining down destruction from the skies. And when these monster clash it does have some of those epic destructive moments that fans have been asking for and that raise the bar for when Godzilla v Kong comes out in 2020.

But unfortunately it retains the rest of the problems from the previous two films in Legendary's Monsterverse, with these remaining problems being magnified this time around. The new cast is led by married couple Mark and Emma Russell, played by Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga, along with their daughter Madison played by Millie Bobby Brown. Normally in a film like this you'd see parents at least try to take their child away from danger, but here Madison's mother has no qualms with letting her child run around with her on battlefield. At the beginning of the film she even brings her to a secret facility containing one of the Kaiju for seemingly no reason.

The rest of the overcrowded supporting cast is rounded up by Zhang Ziyi playing a researcher of ancient myths relating to the creatures, some more supporting scientists for comedic relief and a bunch of forgettable soldiers. There's also the leader of the villainous eco-terrorists Charles Dance, who's so badly defined we don't really get a justification for how he got to his position other than he used to be a soldier and therefore hates humanity now.

In previous films we had enough human characters like Bryan Cranston, John C Reilly and Samuel L Jackson so the human portions of the movie had at least something to support them. But the only good human character in this film is Ken Watanabe, who has a few good lines scattered throughout the film, but is not given enough prominence in the film to make the human drama work. And when a majority of the film is focused on these human characters, this is a big problem. Especially when there are monsters having an epic battle in the background and instead we're forced to spend our time with these bland personalities we don't actually care about.

There's also a lot of logical oversights throughout the film, with the film ignoring anything it needs to in order for our characters to get where they need to get to in the story. Every character seems to inherit the fast travel ability from the last two seasons of Game of Thrones, with characters having the ability to travel across the globe in a matter of minutes to show up wherever they need to, even if the monsters should have been travelling faster than they do. Characters will also change their motivation to suit the needs of the film, going from wanting every Kaiju dead to deciding to work with Godzilla over the course of a scene.

But if you're a fan of the old Toho monster movies and want to see what kind of chaos these titans can cause on a 200 million dollar budget, this film definitely has a lot of great moments showing us that. But at the same time this film doesn't offer anything on par with the moment we first see Godzilla use his atomic breath in the previous movie and takes us on a bland ride with these human characters to get to these moments.

If you watched the first one, this is just more of the same. While there are more monsters and Godzilla is shown more, the plot is bland and pacing all over the place.

Visuals are great and the monster fights are epic. Story is nearly non-existant at times, then at other times its an exposition overload. The movie really does take itself a bit to seriously most of the time, which is to its detriment. A more tongue in cheek approach would have suited it better. Nothing much to say about the characters, bland and unoriginal. The actors are clearly trying their hardest with a weak script.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really wanted to like this movie after the better 2014 one and the musical trailers presented. But other than the 40 minutes or so of the spectacle of the monsters fighting, the character story backdrop was very cliched, tired and dumb. Child saving missions and mechanical failures that require single-handed bravado do not novel story-telling make. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For the most part the action sequences are lost in shaky cameras and jittery editing, constantly hidden by storm and night; King of the Monsters completely fails to conjure any sense of awe about its creatures, except the three-headed dragon (Ghidorah). The roars of creatures are more convinced than the plot, The movie is built around something called the Orca, a bio-sonar machine that can talk to the animals, the specialist Vera Farmiga, who developed Orca and used it, she had a lot of turns in her character in the film, which was so silly, also her daughter (still underage) who surprised all the audience by using Orca at some moments of the film, anyone can tell me how she knew how to use this high-tech machine?!! It's never made sense.

The final fight between Godzilla & Ghidorah is same as the final fight in the previous part of Godzilla in 2014, it looks like repetitive scene, besides the other creatures that pop up less than a minute without any information about what they're capable to do.

"Godzilla: King of the Monsters" is unsatisfying, you can find some exciting moments, but mostly is disappointing, the previous part "Godzilla" in 2014 is completely better than this one, especially with the legend of acting Bryan Cranston.

Which is just stupid cause just like she cares about her remaining family and tries to save them , but every other families on this planet can demand that but no they deserve to die cause of overpopulation etc etc. They tried to create little emotional moment as that b#tch is dying as the movie needs to and you're supposed to cry which is soo hilarious! You can enjoy the 'kaiju actions ' , whatever the cgi was cause i can't see it was so dark and messy ! This flick is much weaker than other two and also forgettable!

I liked the 2014 Godzilla movie, but this sequel is a titanic mess.

Good news first. The kaiju part of this movie is great. Not just the CGI quality, but the actual battles make sense. There are plenty of references to old japanese Godzilla movies, such as Ghidorah being an extraterrestrial life form and Mothra being an ally to Godzilla. The point of the movie is to depict Godzilla as the king of the monsters of this world, and quite literally, many monsters come from around the globe to kneel before Godzilla.

Now the bad news. The human factor in this film is just horrible and annoying. More so than the 2014 Godzilla movie. First there are scientists fighting to not have the Titans killed in their sleep for an absurd reason (just like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's similar plot point), a plot which smells of real-world SJW agenda and vegan-like activists. Then there is Monarch trying to observe and study the slumbering Titans, but WTF with that "eco-terrorism" plot? That's just trash. They wasted such a good actor as Charles Dance ("Tywin Lannister" in Game of Thrones) for nothing. And while this is a fantasy action movie, WTF with that flying fortress acting like the Avengers' Helicarrier? Can't Monarch just equip that air carrier with tons of laser guns and "Oxygen Destroyer" bombs? Last but not least, WTF with the ancient civilization ruins in the depths of the ocean, the place where Godzilla goes to recuperate whenever it's injured?

Godzilla is the King of the Monsters, but King Kong doesn't agree with that, and Godzilla doesn't take kind to insubordination LOL There is a "Godzilla vs Kong" film coming next year to settle this dispute. Well, I hope the sequel is better than this.

Godzilla by Gareth Evans was criticized enormously for taking the name of the mythical Kaiju and just showing it a few minutes. Even I criticize that. But now that the studio gave the monsters priority, it turns out that that wasn't what they wanted. So, how the **** do you please them?

Godzilla was conceived as a metaphor for nuclear weapons. It had an important message at first and the human characters were never of weight in the stories. Let's be honest. While the original stories were a little better built, they were not impressive either. But that's a separate issue.

Godzilla: King of The Monsters has a laughable story. Motives and consequences are stupid. The story is way too problematic and dumb. Its biggest problem and obvious weakness lies in its own argument.
The criticism is not that the characters don't matter, it's that they should not matter in the first place.
The tragedy of Vera Farmiga's character is ridiculous and completely irrational. Her own grief is discredited when the film tries to centralize the drama in a family when millions of families die because of her actions. Where's the sense in it?

That's why the whole plot fails and the awakening of the titans doesn't correspond to anything more than human hypocrisy. Element that the same film mentions. The awakening of these monsters and therefore all the resulting mess wasn't made to heal the planet, nature didn't provoke it, but it was to satiate the ego of a depressive woman unable to deal with her personal trauma.

Doing that aside in the term of entertainment the film does delivers what was promised. Although not 100% as advertised.
Mothra and Rodan are almost useless to be honest. Both have their moment yes, but here the crucial confrontation is between Godzilla and Gidorah.

The visual effects are spectacular although it's incredibly annoying that once again all the fights occur almost in the dark. That saves money in the details of the CGI but unfortunately for that reason all the fights feel repetitive.

Godzilla: King of The Monsters is a weekend film. Turn off the brain and enjoy two basic hours of entertainment on a massive scale because beyond that, the film doesn't offer anything better.

A lot of logic is unreasonable to ignore, the emotional line is weak to ignore, but the monster plot has a full classic restore

Monster Line: 8.5
The restoration of many classic scenes is actually enough. It has awakened the long-lost feelings. In fact, it is not so fascinating, but many childhood scenes have been touched.

Feet: 4 There is no obvious problem with the first race to reduce the problem, but most of them have obvious sense of the foot string, and the analysis of the foot color will be thunder.

Average: 5.5

Before watching the movie, you can watch the movie review website. The department is biased towards monster fans, special effects sound and light orientation, childhood with Cogira companionship, and people who want to see big scenes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. King of the Monsters, for me, is a big letdown from it’s two predecessors in the MonsterVerse and lacks the finesse in the writing, directing and acting that those two movies had and is the only movie to date in the MonsterVerse that I dislike. KotM doesn’t have a great story, something that the characters in the movie actually recognize and act based upon. This entire movie is founded on one character causing a global catastrophe because their plan didn’t go according to plan, meaning the entire movie was avoidable which makes it feel a bit pointless. In other words, the whole premise of the movie is founded in character stupidity, which really hurts the story and development of the plot. In essence, the fates that certain characters have could’ve been avoided and the global catastrophe that happens could’ve been averted. The way that a lot of the characters act based on all of this is actually pretty smart and they do the best they can to get the situation under control. The acting, however, isn’t great and makes some moments and scenes feel really off and awkward. Certain lines feel exaggerated which hurts their delivery in the movie, as though they were said improperly or over acted. The kaiju action, however, is great just as it was in the first two movies, which is one redeeming quality of this movie. Watching the big monsters fight each other is entertaining enough to keep viewers somewhat engaged for the full runtime, but the lack of a cohesive story and plot really hampers the movie from reaching the heights of Godzilla and Skull Island. There are (spoiler alert) a bunch of other big monsters that appear in this movie, but they don’t seem to do too much for the movie and feel like a hugely missed opportunity. Despite how many of them there are, they feel inconsequential to the progress and development of the movie and the focus really seems to be on Godzilla and Ghidorah. I do like that the humans are given the opportunity to get involved in the fight and lend a helping hand, which they actually do in a bigger way in this movie than they did in any other movie in the MonsterVerse at the time this movie came out. I appreciated this a lot as it shows that sometimes, even the big monsters need some help. Humans play a huge role in this movie, giving it a human-centric perspective which is also nice and another redeeming quality of the movie. Unfortunately, these two highlights aren’t enough the save this movie from being a trainwreck compared to the other ones. I don’t like the ending too much, since despite the fact that Godzilla (spoiler alert) comes out victorious, it’s really only because of the help that the humans gave him. This movie doesn’t live up to it’s title since Godzilla got his ass beaten in his first two encounters with Ghidorah and likely wouldn’t have won the third time either without major assistance due to how powerful Ghidorah is. Godzilla feels like a false, or a rigged, king in this movie which makes the end feel unsatisfying and disappointing. Despite some promise and good moments, KotM falters in huge ways and isn’t a great installment in the MonsterVerse. Expand

It was an alright movie. The graphics were cool, and the fights were as well. All in all, there isn't much to say about the movie. Cool movie to watch if you have nothing else to do, I supposed.

The story and characters are terrible but the visual effects, music and sound design saved the film.
