The original Godzilla had a ton of satisfying destruction caused by the King himself. He tears into the city, and even in all its rubber-suited glory, it is so much more enjoyable. Don't go see this new film, just rewatch the original. So much better.

I think the big area the new Godzilla fails in is that it tries to focus on one guy and his struggles with the situation. The original shows us a wide mix of people with all different backgrounds and their reaction to it, making the whole thing feel so much more real. And then there's also the super awesome scenes of destruction. I remember what made me fall in love with Godzilla in the first place. America needs to give up. We'll never even come close to matching what Japan has done.

In a polar opposite of the lighthearted rendition 16 years ago, Godzilla is now radioactively gloomy, bringing a more nuclear oriented plot. It opens well with good human interaction for first half, but sadly the momentum dies down in lieu of gargantuan fight, which is somewhat acceptable and expected just by looking at the title.

The cast looks a bit stumbled with the sparse dialogue and repetitive scenes. Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Ford Brody does look the part of a marine with ancient history with unnatural disaster. He carries himself decently until the last act where he stares into the ruins or eyes of behemoth far too often. Ken Watanabe is utterly underutilized, channeling Mark Wahlberg from The Happening. He seems so confused the entire time, even at ordinary moments, and at rare scenes where he's given script, his role is reduced to giving catchphrases.

Bryan Cranston as Ford's father does a fine performance setting the somber tone at first half. His part is by far the most emotional one; it's a good set-up for the reveal and sells the menace of the creature. The movie works by building the anticipation and not prematurely showcasing the giant, although in some scenes the story progress is told by exposition, either by news or reports. It makes the encounters feel rather cut short, it could've used more visual delight before switching gear to next sequence.

Graphic has more somber atmosphere, at later parts the movie even embraces horror vibe, completely with eerie humming. The drab color palette adds more terror, there's little quizzical tone to be had here. While it's not as colorful as the recent monster movie Pacific Rim, the theme holds consistently. Effects are put to good use; unworldly battles are done with powerful impact. Camera angles often tease the massive beast, occasionally focusing on its scale or eye to enhance the size. Contrasting color, with each passing setting, delivers the solemn ambiance.

There is discrepancy while the story moves forward, human interaction is increasingly reduced towards the end. The movie could've maintained the relationship, but it is certainly lacking at last act. No amount of child actors put in dire situations, and one dog, can bait more sympathy from audience. Script itself is lacking, often leaving the characters glaring emotionless to the screen. A bit coincidence or plot luck is also at played to fit Ford Brody to the scenes, which understandable in disaster movie. Regardless of the flaws, Godzilla serves as a colossus carnage leaving destruction on its wake but not on the original material.

My favorite is still the original Japanese version (Gojira) and although I never thought I would say this, the 1998 version was better in many ways. A lot of the acting in the 1998 version was downright silly, especially the “love story,” but one thing that movie did was exploit New York as a setting and that was fun to watch – Madison Square Garden, the Brooklyn Bridge, etc. In this current version, Honolulu and Las Vegas could have been almost anywhere (we saw a lot of American tourists and some slot machines) and San Francisco was totally wasted (don’t they have hills there?). Also much was made of having quality actors like Juliette Binoche, Bryan Cranston, and Elizabeth Olsen, but you don’t see them very much (don’t blink or you will miss Binoche entirely) and a lot of what the others do is silly or insipid. On the other hand, we see much too much of Aaron Taylor-Johnson who looks dazed and confused most of the time (a hero he ain’t -- not that he runs away, but mostly he is either complaining or being ineffectual). I thought the monsters were good, and so were their battle scenes – and yes, the idea was good, but really do you want to go to a serious Godzilla film? The audience applauded when Godzilla finally breathed fire, but the applause at the end was tepid. In many ways, I found this film unimaginative and mediocre. Expand

THE NAME OF THE MOVIE IS GODZILLA BUT YOU WANT SEE IT UNTIL LAST 30MIN OR BETTER YET LAST 5 MIN BECAUSE THE ENTIRE F****** MOVIE IS SO DARK YOU CAN'T F****** SEE ANYTHING. Why couldn't they make them fight it out in daytime? Why is it that in a Japanese nuclear plant all key positions are filled with Americans? What are the other nations doing while these monsters are rampaging all over the planet? How can they tell which one is male and which is female? Why are they using a nuke if they feed of radiation and the blast has no effect? WHY, WHY, WHY WAS THIS MOVIE MADE. WRITING IS HORRIBLE AND THE DIRECTOR HAS NO IDEA WHAT THE F*** HE IS DOING. PEOPLE WHO SAY THIS IS GOOD HAVE NO TASTE AND DON'T KNOW WHAT THE F*** THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. IN THE NAME OF YOUR WALLET STAY AWAY FROM THIS S***. Expand

It's tightly paced, well acted, and has plenty of truly spectacular "WOW" moments. The movie takes some valuable cues from the original film in terms of pacing and tone. It treats its subject matter as seriously as a good disaster movie should, and provides us with ample buildup as the human characters work to piece together the mystery of Godzilla and his foes.
There is certainly an ample supply of stock side characters and disaster-movie tropes, and Bryan Cranston's role in the film is basically just to deliver lines for the trailer, but this is a Godzilla movie. Judged by that standard it stands tall as one of the best.

But when the big fights do come later in the movie, they are pretty awesome. Like many giant monster movies, the human element is the weak point, but no one wants to sit around and listen to dialog when monsters could be fighting or destroying stuff. Hopefully in the inevitable sequel they might actually have more Godzilla in it. Expand

All the movies build suspense and show us glimpses of the monster throughout the film. Then, before we get too bored, they reveal the creatures. With these movies, the main monsters drive the films plot and story. Godzilla, however, doesn't really do that. The whole plot is driven by the film's antagonists: the MUTO's (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms). The MUTO's cause most of the film's destruction and terror. And, in my opinion, the MUTO's are too generic and forgettable. I don't have a short attention span, Godzilla just isn't in the movie. The MUTO's look too much like the Cloverfield monsters. If Godzilla is supposed to be an allegory for nuclear destruction, or the destructive force of nature, well it doesn't really work out in my opinion. If the focus of the originals was to show how Godzilla affected peoples lives, they didn't really show that in this reboot. Most of the movie was about a generic mission to stop Godzilla and the MUTO's.

That wouldn't be too bad if we had Godzilla for more than 15 minutes (give or take) in the movie. I really would've liked to see more of "The King Of Monsters". The film torments us with glimpses of Godzilla and shows him fighting the MUTO's. Then the movie changes to another scene. It avoids what could've been spectacular battles. Really? WTF?

To add to the other dilemmas, the cast is a bit too generic. The soldier, the wife, and the conspiracy nutjob. Bryan Cranston (who evidently has given up being a drug kinpin after faking his death) is the most interesting character, and he extremely underused. (--SPOILER ALERT: He was killed off way too quickly.--) Aaron Taylor Johnson (who I guess has given up his costumed identity as Kick-Ass) and Elizabeth Olsen are fine, but like the MUTO's, are forgettable. (Did anyone get my Kick-Ass and Breaking Bad reference? Also, how weird must it be for the two to be a married couple in this film, and then a pair of superhero siblings in The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron? Might I add they are sometimes an incestuous couple in the comics?) Ken Watanabe is only there to tell us important plot details. The Army is not entertaining enough and just a distraction, especially in a film that should star the King Of Monsters. Most of the movie is filled with boring sublots. The move makers didn't want to oversensitze us to too much CGI, so I feel they crammed in human drama.

The film starts out interesting, but after SPOILER ALERT Joe Brody dies, the film goes downhill from there. There is a lot of exposition and, as we are taught in school, "rising action".

Visually, it looks great. But in these days of CGI spectacle, that is the norm for Hollywood blockbusters. The final 15 minutes are good, and the scene where SPOILER ALERT Godzilla shoots atomic breath down the MUTO's throat is awesome. But even that, yes even that, isn't enough to save the Americanized "Super-Sized" Godzilla and his movie. Just kidding, Godzilla's design is great. (Maybe a bit too bulky? But the scales on his back are great, especially in the swimming scenes.

Ultimately, IMO the movie falls short in all aspects. However, I'm glad others seemed happy with the film. 10 years after the last official Godzilla movie, the King Of Monsters is back! And that roar is so iconic. Godzilla is very badass, lol. Can't wait for the sequel! I welcome Godzilla's return into movies, even if it was a bit underwhelming.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ive long been a Godzilla fan, Ive seen almost every movie and the original one from 1954 still hails as a classic in my opinion and while there was some things that could have been done better in this movie, I still feel like this movie was/is one of the best movies of 2014 and marked a successful return for the King to America. Yeah, some could say that holding Godzilla back until roughly an hour in was sort of a letdown as well as killing off Brian Cranston(the only actor who seemed to give a **** the entire film) but this film mostly suffered from what I felt like was under-developed characters and over-all a somewhat too "human centered" movie. Taylor-Johnson is passable and Olsen is also enjoyable but other than Cranston, Hawkins, Strathairn and Watanabe the movie could have benefited from a better lead actor who could take command of the screen while not feeling like such an emotionless rock someone like Chris Pratt, Matt Damon (doubt he would do it) or even a Tom Hardy would have been much better suited for the role than Aaron Johnson. Yes, showing the human side of Godzilla's path of destruction is a much needed quality to these movies but not to the extent of giving your title character around 24 minutes of TOTAL screen time(+small appearances in the beginning) which is why I didn't have an issue with it. But on the flip side, most of the movie showed the humans being stupid and trying to nuke Godzilla(who feeds off nuclear fallout) and the MUTOs, the entire human aspect of the film could have been done alot better then the simple "lets nuke em" approach. The fight scene towards the end really made the movie for me as a whole and the final appearance by Godzilla was glorious as well. All in all, I feel like this movie was very well done. Say what you want about Godzilla's screen time but you can definitely feel his presence being felt as they cleverly took a page out of classic movies like "Jaws," and "Jurassic Park" at holding their biggest and baddest monster back, allowing you to feel his presence off screen before unleashing him onscreen. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life, along with Skyline (as an example).
I am aware that the monster, supposedly fits the original, but I think that's exactly why the movie it's so bad. Godzilla looks like a giant lizard, too " humanized ", and it seems a fat and angry man. The other monsters that are among flying cockroaches, mixed with spiders, are very "alien". I felt like watching a movie filmed frame by frame, "I could almost see the hands of puppeter" (if you know what I mean) and not because the effects are bad, but how the movie is directed.
The story have no sense, the entire first half, is about the drama of the father crying for his mourning nearly 15 years ( I am surprised that Bryan Cranston has played that role after Breaking Bad ). The son, as a good American soldier is better than anyone else and the one who always survives thousand events. When the monsters are going to fight, cut the scene. Out of nowhere, everything is solved and the family is reunited and they live happily ever after... the end.
I did not like at all, I would not see it again by mistake .

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was very much looking forward to seeing this movie. I waited months and months for it to come out, and being a long-time fan of the Godzilla movies, I felt that a modern version would be definitively worth my money. I was sorely disappointed. Here are my reasons:
- Bryan Cranston is killed off within 15 minutes.
- The rest of the acting is LAUGHABLE at best. His son (Aaron Taylor Johnson) was board-like in his acting: I felt nothing. He has the same emotional range of a potato. The only character with less depth was his wife. Just. Plain. Awful. I could not bring myself to believe anything that they were portraying, and they had no on-screen chemistry.
- You came to see Godzilla in a Godzilla movie? Good luck. He has about 15 minutes (give or take 10 minutes) of screen time. That's it. The first HOUR or so of the movie is Godzilla-less. No Godzilla. None.
- You came to see Godzilla fight? Yeah, right. Three times in the movie does Godzilla fight - The first time is shown on a TV screen and cuts RIGHT BEFORE the fighting actually begins. The second time, the fight scene is cut short AGAIN by doors closing RIGHT BEFORE the fighting actually begins. The last time they fight (to give credit where credit is due) is an actual fight... but its in the last, very last, minutes of the movie.
- All the space before and between the fighting is bland, boring and emotionless planning and dumb subplots.
Save your money. Go rent Pacific Rim.

The King Of The Monsters Returns! Bow down to the king!
The Human drama is dark and brutal. The Godzilla movies always shown the destructive nature that the humans cannot escape from the battlefield. From the start to the ending I was eyes open into the storyline. Which was the generic awesome original Godzilla genre. "We need to **** kill these things" then meeting with failure over failure. Godzilla is a destructive force..Godzilla is natures balance.. and the idea just knowing that pays off, because in this film they are fully there in the astmosphere, but they barely show them until the end product. For an example, they show off that they are about to have an epic battle, then teases it into someone else ACROSS THE WORLD. For some people it was a big problem, for me. It was just right. It kept me watching, looking for whats next, it gave me chills down my spine. Btw Godzilla is a badass MOFO.

Though it needed more of Byran Canston. He made the starting of the film, feel so nice. He was the center of darkness and emotional depression that nature caused him to be. It makes you feel mentally that bad things are going to happen to the humans in the future of the movie. In the end it sorta pays off with good acting but generic characters.. which my family didn't mind. End result it was smooth and dramatic. Visually it couldn't be better, we hit the point of realism that our eyes can handle.

It was more that we could of asked for.

I first heard of this film from James Rolfe some months ago; since then I've been waiting anxiously for it's release date, hoping that it would justify all the hype I had built.
And it didn't disappoint, in fact it delivered more than I expected. Now, I want to clarify that I'm no Godzilla expert and my limited knowledge of this cult originates from the vision of Godzillathon, but I don't think I would exaggerate if I said that this movie is probably one of the best in the entire saga.

While the first half of the film may be a little slow paced for some people, it does a good job at introducing the characters and developing the plot.

The constant interruption of the fight between the monsters was clever: it made me crave for more and more and the tension I had accumulated was slowly killing me , but it paid off in the end.

The last 20 minutes were epic, and really explain why Godzilla is the "King of the monsters". Sure, some may complain that, for a movie titled Godzilla, 20 minutes of screen time aren't enough, but I'd rather have 20 minutes of an intense and well done fight, than 2 hours of:"Oh look explosions and destruction and other random stuff!"

Brian had the good sense to be killed off in the first 30 minutes. The rest of the actors would have been laughed at in a High School production. The tension is real, the characters believable, and the destruction is glorious. A perfect melding of the original Japanese mentality towards the series with American writing and filmmaking. I found myself to be completely absorbed in it and enthralled by it.

There's definitely more of a focus on the human element and characters, which clearly has disappointed some. Personally I don't feel the movie could have succeeded quite in the same way. This movie has the potential to please audiences new and old. If they had just focused on Godzilla himself then this would've only appealed to old-school Godzilla fans. It would've also lost the realistic feel this movie has. Honestly I see it as the best of both worlds, and I loved old-school, Japanese Godzilla.

The movie doesn't skip out on it's monster though. Godzilla is still here in all his magnificence, and director Gareth Edwards just loves to show off his massive size. I love how Godzilla is portrayed in this film, and I can't wait for the sequels this movie sets up for. It's a perfect introduction to Godzilla, and what is hopefully the start of a new series of films.

The tension builds to perfection in this movie. It's an absolute blast to behold and it had me sitting on the edge of my seat in suspense many times throughout. It's an absolute masterpiece of a monster movie, and one that I recommend be at the top of your must-watch list.

Honestly, it seemed two of us liked it while two thought that it lacked in areas. Let me start by saying, I liked it. It was no Pacific Rim, thank God, because i was so expectant for that movie and it was a major disappointment to me. This movie however, was more like a disaster movie, rather than a monster movie. I was a little disappointed that Godzilla was not in very many scenes, but afterward, I thought about it and talked with friends and I realized I was kind of glad because then it would have simply been another Pacific Rim. Only it would have been Kaiju fighting Kaiju. Godzilla looked awesome! On that, we all agreed. The acting suffered a bit but the storyline was interesting. overall, I enjoyed the look and feel of the movie. It's what a summer movie should be, loud, exciting, and intense! Expand

The movie has great actors supported by Bryan Cranston(breaking bad, malcolm in the middle),Elizabeth Olsen(oldboy, avengers 2),Aaron Johnson(kick ass),they all deliver a magnificent performance ,especially from Bryan Cranston. The human element which most of the movie is hangs onto is fantastic ,you root for these guys ,you care for them, you want them to survive. The story itself is quite gripping and fascinating, constantly innovating, but also remaining a good throwback to the 1954 original, which itself held a very political message with it.

BUUUUUUUT,besides an ultimately intruiguing plot, the reason we all came to the theater is to hear and see the KING OF ALL MONSTERS,GODZILLA.The director utilizes a very smart approach instead of showing him to us all the time, like 1998 Roland Emmerich's film, this movie constantly teases us ,so that when it actually gets to the fight and glory it's all the more energetic, worthwile and MY GOD THE FINAL FIGHT is absolutely worth the price of admission, its just 15 to 16 minutes of pure BADASS,EPIC AND GLORIOUS,battle i have ever seen,in fact when it does get to the ultimate climax it made me clap, now ussualy i am pretty pumped and all anxious when i see action in theaters, but i never clap, this movie made me want to do that, and the whole theater clapped with me ,which made this moment truly amazing because it that much more effective when everyone gets their mind blown and ripped to pieces.

GODZILLA ,is without a doubt a cinematic masterpiece and achievement, its the best example of how to do a proper monster movie:heartful, suspenseful, exciting, teasing and one that pays off very big.
So what the hell are you waiting for go line up and hear the big guy roar.

btw, GODZILLA's the roar is one of the most unique and awesome out there, seriously its really loud.

I thought they did a decent job building the suspense. I will admit it felt a little drug out once the first encounter between Godzilla and an MUTO occurred, Even 30 seconds of action there could have made the appetizer Edwards was trying to give us more filling.

They did an 'okay' job setting up the story, It was better than almost every Godzilla ever conceived but it felt like several different movies going on at once. Godzilla looked great, the action sequences involving Godzilla were great but in the end I don't really feel like I got enough, and came away a little disappointed as a result. Trading some Aaron Taylor-Johnson face time for Godzilla would have gone a long way.

As a fan of the series, I would have preferred Godzilla as an antagonist. It felt like making Godzilla this misunderstood savior of humanity, destroying buildings as collateral damage was hedging their bets a little much.

(if you can hang with that you'll enjoy the film) This is the film I was waiting for since 3D modeling and the movies got together. As a fan of giant monster movies since I was a kid I was waiting expectantly for this film since I saw the trailer and it definitely is the best Godzilla movie ever!

Having seen it on opening day I can testify that the audience had a great time. My only wish list would be in the future - more monster - less military. This film takes awhile to get going, like a lot of other (superhero) franchise films, it needs to lay down a solid foundation for the many sequels still to come - Whoo Hoo!! ( man am I getting tired of Spiderman, Superman, Transformers, etc over and over - giant dinosaurs destroying cities much more fun!) You know you're going to be seeing those sequels so you might as well go to the local IMAX, strap on your glasses and have some fun with Godzilla this weekend. Note - this film is rated PG and although there are scenes that might scare small children - lots of destruction - there is virtually no gratuitous violence - which means its fine for kids over 13. It follows in the tradition of the Japanese movies nicely. Exciting, funny at times, with a decent supporting story - if you're a Godzilla fan - you'll enjoy it!

If there's one thing this film does right its building tension. At the centre of this is Brian Cranston's brilliantly developed and well acted character. However they kill him of so quickly he might as well not of been there... Which is a shame because he's the only interesting character in the film! Everyone else is a generic, one dimensional stereotype, devoid of any character or personality. This is made even worse by the fact you'll be spending 3 quarters of the film with them! And that's not cool. The problem is there's no payoff. While the last fight scene is good, it just feels unsatisfying, which then leads to a rushed ending that's obviously setting up a sequel. Overall its jut mediocre. Expand

Couple of surprises, couple of annoying teases, and a whole lot of blah. Redeeming qualities - excellent sound effects, and for the most part, visual effects aren't too bad either. Not worth IMAX 3D, but still noteworthy. It took a while to get used to, but I like the new look of Godzilla. So what, Japan, he looks fat... Godzilla went to the U.S., and was chillin' in Frisco, ordering the Supersize meals from Mickey D's. He'll lose the weight after swimming back to Japan. On a more serious note - this film IS better than: Godzilla 1998, and Godzilla vs. King Kong. That's it. The movie's flaws are numerous. Once again I will not go into spoilers, but there are several let-downs, numerous holes, and a couple of oddities that are senseless to have in a Godzilla film. This film is not shockingly embarrassing like 1998, but it is fairly disappointing to this Godzilla fan. With that being said, I'm in no way disappointed with that outcome. Godzilla is a taut, smart, and morally sound THRILLER, not action film. Director Gareth Edwards does a great job of keeping Godzilla back for the most part, only showing glimpses of him until the final 20 or so minutes. This style of narrative pays great homage to the original film, and I really respect that. People complain about Aaron Johnson's character not being emotive enough, and while he certainly isn't, that's not what the character calls for. The character calls for someone who is in control-both physically and emotionally, and that's what Johnson brings to the table. The entire cast brings their A-game and elevates occasionally clunky dialogue to fascinating, realistic drama. A great movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Someone has been studying his Spielberg, and he gets an A.

This is less about the destruction wrought by monsters [although there is plenty of that] as much as the appearance of monsters: out of the mist, the water, the sky, the earth, as they march, or fly, or erupt into view. The protagonist doesn't act as much as react [and in a nod to Jaws, one of a number of references to other science fiction/monster movies, he is named Brody] and many shots are framed from his literal view point, from behind, his person small against a huge background.

The movie takes its time: in one memorable scene, four soldiers need to check a railroad bridge, two walking on top and two below. Even if it weren't 3D the railroad ties are far apart, the view down below vertiginous. When one of them drops his flashlight, we follow it all the way down from the top, and then cut to it almost hitting one of the two below. A quiet minute or so of sheer suspense. Of course, they radio back that it's safe to come across, only to have a flaming engine [see burning train from War of the Worlds] coming straight at them, followed by a point of view from underwater, in which you see Brody, having jumped from the bridge, break the surface, the glowing train right behind him.

The sound design in exquisite: several times cables give way and snap with a twang of menace, and of course the creatures bellow much more loudly than anything in Jurassic Park [thank you IMAX speakers. if the glass of water on the dash board vibrated in Jurassic, this time your seat vibrates]

A reference to Aliens is the hand held motion devices, and for an extended, beautiful paratrooper jump, with long orange smoke trails against a deep blue sky, the sound cue is the same one Kurbick used for the approach to the monolith in the Moon excavation.

I wasn't so much scared as delighted, and I had a big grin on my face throughout. I kept thinking, WOW, someone really took the time and the trouble to get every detail right. There were no bombastic "Today we are cancelling the apocalypse! " moments, just a father separated from his wife and son, wondering whether he may be called to give his life one minute, or the next, or the next.

I first have to compliment the engaging human element that was lacking and reduced to downright embarrassment in the horrid first American reboot in 1998. While despite Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character dragging at times, he still manages to be a tolerable lead along with his talented supporting cast, especially since the original Godzilla films never had acting as a strong suit. The screenplay was gratifyingly reminiscent of previous Godzilla installments as well; while not being the most ideally written it's still effective enough to grip the attention span with its serious feel. The score for the film composed by Alexandre Desplat, has an old school Akira Ifukube vibe to it, paying reverence to the great Godzilla anthems of old, while injecting an additional neoteric feel that helps set the dark tone for the film. This gives each scene an extra ounce of thrilling tension. Now, as for Godzilla himself, he is seen for a limited time in his own film which was not necessarily a bad thing. Gareth Edwards' incessant build-up and teases work like a charm to make the audience crave more of the big guy (who is designed into his most intimidating incarnation to date), and more of his terrifyingly alluring parasitic foes. With that being said, the film culminates with one of the most awe-inspiring and jaw-dropping giant monster smack downs to ever be graced on screen. The nearly impeccable CGI in this film make the fight scenes seem even more unparalleled to anything that any Godzilla movie or action movie has ever delivered before.

Overall, this is a welcoming return for the king of the monsters and a commendable attempt by director and fellow Godzilla fan, Gareth Edwards at delivering an awesome reboot to the fans and breathing new life into a storied franchise.

Unfortunately for this film it spent a LOT of time on the humans and trying to make me care about them in some way, but it failed at that. Furthermore it has the 100% typical Hollywood action/disaster/monster movie plot, so there were absolutely no surprises or unexpected twists in that department. Some sequences just seem like they were straight up ripped from other, better, movies. Brian Cranston does a decent job of acting but the only other people involved in the making of this movie who weren't phoning it in were the special effects team. Godzilla is good when he's on screen, but that's only for like 15 or 20 minutes or so, and you have to sit through the whole rest of the movie to get there.

My advice is to:
1. Stay home and watch Pacific Rim, Jurassic Park, or one of the Japanese Godzilla movies.
2. Wait for this to come out on DVD so you can watch it with RiffTrax on or fast-forward past all the boring parts (there will be a lot of fast-forwarding).

With this sweeping epic, however, that wait is finally over. Godzilla brings new life into the Godzilla franchise with a violent fibrillation shock to the heart. Finally sweeping Roland Emmerich's disastrous attempt under the bed, Godzilla delivers not only a thrilling, engaging and emotionally invested film, it brings along that sense of shock and awe that most monster movies don't with cinematography and special effects that bring movies like Transformers down to their knees. Backed by an enriched and powerful story packaged with a script evidently written by truly devoted people and an unpredictable sequence of events that always gets you pondering about the next thing that might happen, Godzilla is a delight for movie-goers and blockbuster sightseers alike.

Without a doubt, Godzilla is one hell of a film. Guaranteed to get your heart pounding throughout the 2 hour run-time of the film, the team at Legendary Pictures has successfully pulled off a grand spectacle for western audiences to enjoy greatly.

Godzilla movie review

Long ago in a dark, dark time known as 1998, a film was brilliantly advertised as being a remake of the original Godzilla movie, making it dark, realistic, and have political undertones. What did we get? A slapstick comedy featuring baby Godzilla slipping on gumballs and Matthew Broderick saying “That’s a lot of fish.” So naturally fans were left rather annoyed, and left feeling that their beloved king of the monsters wasn’t being paid enough tribute in modern cinema. And sixteen years later director Gareth Edwards saves the day with his movie “Godzilla”

Normally I would talk about the plot in this paragraph, but I really can’t. Half of the experience of going to see Godzilla is really being unaware of what’s going to happen, and so I’ll only give a very brief look at the plot. Joe Brody (Brian Cranston) works at a nuclear power plant, and on his birthday his wife (Juliette Binoche) comes with him to the plant in order to help him with some problems. While there they discover a string of odd radioactive spikes and then blah blah blah Godzilla. I really can’t explain any more than that.

This movie’s biggest advantage is its buildup. Godzilla himself only shows up in the last half-hour in the movie, and so the other hour and a half is spent mostly around Brian Cranston’s character and his son Ford Brody (Aaron Johnson) searching around nuclear sites and trying to track down whatever is causing these odd radioactive spikes, and rousing these mysterious other monsters that a certain king of the monsters may throw down with near the end *wink*. The tone that this film sets and the overall feel that it creates is astounding, and is very much up to scratch with something like Jaws or Flight of the Navigator. Its all extremely interesting to watch, seeing how governments and scientists react, how the military reacts, etcetera.

However this film’s negative (notice how it only has one) is sidelining Brian Cranston’s character for his son. Cranston is an infinitely better actor (one scene of his I’m determined to get him nominated for best actor) and his character is the one that we were most attached to. Pushing him to the side for a character that is a cold, military soldier with a “Let’s get the job done” attitude was definitely a poor decision.

But what’s a Godzilla movie without a gigantic lizard destroying the city? Not much, and when Godzilla does appear in this film he is truly fantastic. He is brilliantly CG’d, his scale is brilliantly portrayed, and when he is scrapping with the other monsters he is scrapping HARD. The final fight contains what I would like to say deserves the “Best Kill Award” from whatever silly organisation would grant such a thing.

However, a complaint that people have is that Godzilla is teased too much in this film. I completely disagree, as keeping Godzilla’s fighting for the last little bit of the movie made it far FAR more impressive. It’s like having a steaming hot lobster that looks like the most delicious thing you’ve ever seen served, but you aren’t allowed to eat it for half an hour. So this delicious meal stares at you, making you lick your lips in anticipation more and more every second. And when you finally are allowed to chow down, it tastes oh, so delicious.

So in conclusion Godzilla is easily a contender for best picture this year. It has excellent build-up, flawless acting, and a final fight scene to blow any other film’s climax out of the water. For any lover of action, monster, or any darker movie in general, Godzilla is a must see. Godzilla scores a 9/10.

The first part of the film starts of promising. It builds suspense, develops the characters and creates an interesting world which would allow the plot to unfold in interesting ways.

Unfortunately as soon as the US Military shows up after the first monster attack, the whole set up is thrown over boards. After that the movie feels like its just a set up for iconic photography.. Which works great for trailers, but for me just ruins the film.

In a film which in the beginning tries to be taken serious, I really get annoyed when huge monsters appear out of nowhere. Literally, you have no clue the monster is around until a huge foot drops from the top of the screen. Like they move completely silent unless they are filmed by the camera.

Also, huge holes in the side of mountains are only discovered from the air after the ground team discovered them from the ground, even though the ground team was flown there by helicopters.

Also the human/military response to the monsters in the movie is almost always borderline suicidal and idiotic.

These cliches work if you set up the film in that direction, but in this movie it does not work for me.

Bryan Cranston is the only character we connect with emotionally, and yet he only appears in the first half-hour or so. I couldn't care less about anybody less. The emotional disconnect and the way the characters react so unaffectedly to giant monsters really pulled me out of the experience. Also, Godzilla was severely underused and should've fought less generic CGI monsters. They should've pitted him against another iconic Godzilla monster, or make Godzilla the bad guy. All I can say is I was disappointed with the execution of the movie. It's not a bad movie; it's shot quite well and has interesting audio/visual techniques, but overall it's not worth seeing. Expand

I knew it was gonna be good, but I didn't think it would be THAT good. It was tastefully cheesey that was true to the story of Godzilla, and I am going to say this could be my favorite movie of the summer.

I walked into this movie and I wasn't sure what to expect. Walking out I can tell you.
Imagine you shot the 1954 Godzilla film in color (like 1998 film without the creative changes), gave it a contemporary plot and mashed as much of the film Cloverfield in there as you can manage. That would suitably describe this film.
There are pros and cons of course.
Cons:
The Scientist archetypes don't really contribute much.
The epic monster fighting is mostly done off screen or is presented in wake of destruction shots for the first part of the film.
Nothing really astounding in the acting department.
Pros:
Godzilla looks like godzilla. He even emotes a bit at one point. He looks weary.
The right number of monsters to keep it interesting.
Believable destruction,
An interesting original take on the whole ancient monsters thing.
You don't lose the human scale of things.

Overall this film magnificently combines the three elements that make up a Godzilla film; nuclear weapon fears, massive destruction the military either causes or can do nothing about and also a giant green lizard that is extremely hard to kill. Overall this film falls just short of excellent. Ironically it is the human element that is its biggest weakness.

We don't look for great dialogue as a rule in this type of movie, but thanks to the too short role of Brian Cranston, truly one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood, who can make anything believable, the movie takes on a more human role and its hokey factor is much lower.
The big draw here is cinematography and special effects, as one would expect, and on that note the movie excels. The colors especially in background shots are well placed as we see Honolulu, Las Vegas and San Francisco bear the fury of our hero Godzilla fighting two creatures called "mutas", or mothras, perhaps, that in the case of the male look like huge cockroach/bat monsters. In fact, they are actually quite disturbing in detail, and as a caution, your littlest kids may not want to see them that close up in a theatre.
That being said, "Godzilla" will be a big draw as word spreads that it's actually as good a monster movie as you're going to get, the closest comparison maybe being the scarier "Cloverfield". It isn't deep, but it's good for watching to get your mind off anything that's bugging you.

It is obvious that Gareth Edwards was heavily inspired by Spielberg, it shows in the direction of the film. He does a wonderful job of building tension, so once you finally hear Godzilla roar, it is well worth the wait. The movie has a great pace, and although it didn't use the talented cast to it's full potential, all the actors did a wonderful job. This movie is well worth the price of an admission ticket. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I saw it and man I was disappointed. They kept showing us more of this military rather than the fights of Godzilla. Most of the dialogue is boring and not interesting and it feels like as if the movie was rushed. The only things I like about this movie was the action scenes with Godzilla fighting those 2 monsters (which idk what the **** they are suppose to be called) but yeah. Overall this is a decent movie I will give it 7.2/10 I just wish they cans show us more of Godzilla fighting rather than cutting it out so much. Expand

A Godzilla that ACTUALLY looks original? Check. Other monsters besides Godzilla? Check. I could go on and on about all the stuff you see in the trailers, but I have a review to make and a statement to say. My statement? Godzilla (GZ) is, without a doubt, a spectacular film overall, and one of the most special films to come to this genre in years. GZ is ambitious, creative, destructive, and AWESOME. What's special about GZ compared to other action and GZ films is that it mixes so much into it. GZ actually has a fair amount of human drama. With this, GZ makes you care about the characters and you might actually hope to God that they don't die when destruction hits. Before the big guy is revealed, the movie makes you feel fear. Gareth Edwards proves he is brilliant because he knows audiences will want to see the big guy pretty soon once they get in there. To keep audiences satisfied, he puts another monster in there brilliantly before the big guy comes. How was the acting? Extremely good. Aaron Taylor-Johnson should really be in other action movies after this. Bryan Cranston? You know what you're getting with that amazing actor. The others are almost as good. However, when Aaron Taylor-Johnson travels across the country with the army, I really felt that if he had another great character with him his journey would have fared better. But how is the action? It is extremely destructive. It has a much larger scale with the giant monsters, which you might dislike. Me? I loved every second of it, but I did feel that in the third and most violent act, the destruction could have used a little bit of more variety. Plus, it did get frustrating from time to time when they cut off the action and go back to the drama. Like I said, I loved the human drama. It just got a little tedious there. Despite these small flaws, GZ is phenomenal. This might actually be the first movie I have reviewed and recommend to everyone. And I do. Since the users can't use a 100 scale for scoring, I gotta give it a 10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just love the way they casually set off a nuclear device off the coast of San Francisco. That would cause more damage than Godzilla ever did. Too many people, and not enough kaiju. It has been said "a camel is a horse designed by a committee." Way too much "plot:" not nearly enough action. Too much military nonsense (although the "insertion" from 30,000 feet was cool-looking, but not really how they'd do it). And what were those pathetic creatures? The writers couldn't decide if they wanted Rodan or Mothra, so they created a.....bat with a human butt. Gareth Edwards used the same blinking lights he used in "Monsters," (which also could have been a lot better with more monsters and less human "interaction"). Am I the only one who noticed they stole King Kong's nose and facial expressions? They had the opportunity to make a movie using real science to advance the plot (archeologists do keep finding bigger and bigger dinosaurs), but no, they had to go all Hollywood on us and make a movie somebody thought would appeal to the widest audience. And so they got plain vanilla. Not even vanilla bean, just vanilla..... Expand

You could hear everyone gasp or even start clapping during certain scenes due to just how "godzilla-like" they were. A good mix of modern story telling and scents of the old school monster we all know and love.
The story is what you can expect but its not terrible either. The characters are ones we've seen before and Bryan Cranston was not utilized enough. My only real complaint is that the directer teases you the entire movie with Godzilla ready to fight but would always cut away. I can understand a tactic like that if you were to give a epic battle during the grand finale but it never really happens.

This film is definitely worth watching.

But do not expect an insane amount of fight scenes as the film is more focused on the humans rather than the kaijus. The only thing I was disappointed with was the music for this film. There should had been more adreniline rushing music with guitars etc. Rather than a orchestra.

After each bad review that I read, I looked at said reviewer's OTHER reviews. I found "perfect ten" ratings on well known bad movies like R.I.P.D., or Battleship. Honestly, this movie was reviving the style of the 1954 original. It's much more about the message than the "mediocre acting," or the "boring plot." (Which isn't) Not only that, but if you're not some neanderthal of a moviegoer, you will be enthralled by the plot, and the final battle puts movies like Pacific Rim to shame. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Why do I keep doing this to myself? This movie is awful on all fronts. Every single aspect of this movie is terrible and stupid - the plot, the subplot, the superplot, the dialogue, acting. Even the special effects are lame. I hope they paid Cranston piles and piles of $ to compromise his acting career in this fashion. He was trying to act like crazy in a wholesomely futile and purposeless effort, and all he succeeded to do is to look ridiculous. At least they put him out of his misery quickly. Don't even get me started on Juliette Binoche. What the hell is she doing in this fiasco. She dies quicker than Cranston so maybe she hopes no one really noticed her. I marked this review to contain spoilers, but there's no spoiling this movie. It is spoiled beyond anything I can reveal here, and revealing how terrible this movie is can only help people's lives and I feel that it is my citizen's duty to do so. Here goes: the movie ends with Godzilla being cheered by masses because he had just killed the other two monsters (hybrids between a bat, the alien, praying mantis, and early days of robotics) with his dragon breath. His motive was to restore balance?!?! Humans are quite inconsequential, and they all act like bunch of people who just don't care and are fully aware that all of it is just make believe. Anyhow, give it a wide berth. Expand

In terms of sheer awesomeness, hardly any other monster movie can touch this film. Everything about it is massive, and feels massive. This is what all serious monster movies want to be.

I had very few complaints when watching the movie. None of the ones I usually had were in the film at all, like the military being completely incompetent or people getting killed by the monster by doing dumb things. It felt very realistic and everything had weight to it. Seeing it in IMAX only helped with this, the depth was fantastic.

Godzilla was faithful to the original monster, and felt respected as Godzilla instead of just a big dumb monster. The designs of the MUTO's did seem a little out of place, but they did look great as well. A few scenes were very striking when they stood in full form, same with Godzilla.

This was the first movie in a very long time to give me chills. I can't stress enough how massive everything felt. I recommend IMAX if possible.

Even if you aren't a fan of the original Godzilla, you can still find things to love in this.

Incredibly well thought out and crafted, summer escapism picture works on nearly every level. Instead of a typical temper tantrum plot, the protagonist hero isn't feeling sorry for himself, and things are quite meta(love, God, family) under the surface. The suspense and technical achievement combined make for an exciting picture that is highly involving, and especially delivers a great adversary, with nods to early Spielberg(Jaws and Close Encounters), some bashing of later Spielberg(totally overrated JP). The action sequences are complex, easy to follow and beautifully captured. Godzilla delivers on a huge build up, and the monster fights are great. Thank you Thomas Tull for hiring Gareth Edwards. Alright, maybe it's not REALLY worth a decade, but the new Godzilla is a damn god film nonetheless. The only major flaw is its slow start. And when I say slow, I mean very, very slow. Sure, a nuclear power plant collapses and the presence of the to-be-revealed creatures is hinted at, but just be prepared for some long stretches of dialogue before anything really picks up.

But once it does, it becomes abundantly clear that Godzilla is arguably the best monster movie of the new millennium. The visual effects are spectacular, and the sound design is sufficient to shake the seats in the theater. It's an experience like nothing else.

Wanted for something to happen somewhere, but had no luck. It only teased me with some sudden loud noises and briskly camera panning away from the characters just what the monster appeared from nowhere, but it didn't. I think the human story and monster's did not synch in with a clean perfect one movie. Humans and monsters were completely parted. At least collision between them would have been very interested, just like the car and helicopter chase in the '98 version.

All the human characters were very weak including army general, the protagonist and his silly mission. I wanted a gutsy person like Stephen Lang, who was excellent in 'Avatar' as a lieutenant colonel. You gonna love the graphic side of the movie, but this story badly misses the rockstar characters like one from Ron Perlman for 'Pacific Rim' and Jean Reno for '98 'Godzilla'. Aaron Johnson was good, but not good enough to handle whole movie himself. The inclusion of another couple of well know actors would have helped better in my opinion. Maybe the surprise entries are kept for a sequel, I guess.

Like any other Godzilla fan, I fought for my ticket that I booked a day earlier and saw on the first day itself. Actually, I enjoyed a lot this movie, but it will never be my favourite Monster movie. 'Favourite' and 'good entertainer' are two different categories. All the good entertainers are not my favourite. Though I cherished this film in a few scenes. Most importantly, this movie making opportunity was landed on the pair of a good hand. I liked 'Monsters', the director shown his caliber in that low budget high quality movie. So I had faith in him, but the thing was he's a documentary style movie maker. I was wondering how this commercial movie gonna shape up. Well, he proved that he can pull the trigger of the bazooka as well. It was visible that he was given freedom to make his way, at least in the majority of the movie.

‘‘Let them fight.’’

Must agree this is the best version according to the appearance of the monster. So the credits must go to all the members of special effects and visual effects team. No doubt stunts were breathtaking. It was a 2 hour movie, in that first half was dragged with human drama that I did not like much. It was drifting away from the main picture. So I was lucky in the exact beginning of the second half where the 'king of the monsters' appears in front of us completely with a huge roar. There's another flying monster in the movie called Muto. This second hour is all about them fighting each other. In a couple of the scenes I was totally disappointed where the fights between them were smartly concealed other than showing us through cable news channels and in few other tricky ways. Well, they saved it for the final battle. I guess it was a little late, but in some way it convinces us to satisfy after a long wait.

During the final battle something did not look good. I thought Godzilla was an animal, suddenly he becomes very intelligent and uses his fire-breath in a particular position to defeat his enemy. That's not at all, walking back to the sea was kind of looked like a Disney's fairy tale concept. Because monsters should behave like one not like one of a Marvel's superhero who concerns for human safety. That is the portion made me think like is it a children's movie? Because I just saw it till the end without aware. That small mistake was one of a drawback in the movie. They desperately wanted it for a sequel and so they did it without harming humans around.

Again the digital 3D was wasted with this movie. It was shot as a regular and converted into digital 3D. There was none pop-outs throughout. Okay, fine, that's not a big deal, but in most of the parts depth of the visuals were weaker, almost plain with too much darker background. I would say there's nothing special offers in this digital 3D version of the movie. Since it is made as a one we must prefer 3D over regular for somewhat better result to get.

There's a generation gap, fighting over different version won't change anything. My favourite version will remain the same and so yours and others. The purpose of all versions is to entertain the audience and so it does. As far now my review was mixed respond with a bit slides toward the negative side. In one line to say what's the wrong with this movie is that human portion of the story was a big letdown, though the vfx tried its best to lift is as much it can.

Overall, I believe repeat viewing this movie won't help us to love it. The first impression is the best, if you got it, then fine, if not, so you must be either '98 or '54 version fan. If you are a Godzilla fan then it is a must see movie whether you like it or not. Put all your faith and take a chance, who knows you may like it better than me.

150 characters is a must but there is no need to say a lot about the movie, the spirit of king was everywhere. i had no hope for Hollywood but obviously i am wrong, it did a good job for this time.

Those people who adore pacific rim should adore godzilla, why they hate it? less fighting scene? less cheesy dialog between the lead role unlike mako and raleigh? I love pacific rim and I am in the same stance with godzilla

Maybe those

Maybe those people havent watch the ORGIGINAL JAPANESE godzilla movies, the kaiju battle only sum up for maybe 1/5 of the film.

Lets get to the review, Godzilla (2014) is a great movie, got the tension and suspense regarding how chaotic they can be and we, human, are such tiny and have useless weapon that we can throw against them.

I would like to appreciate Bryan Cranston who gave the film a great 10 minute opening scene, he got it right, got the appropriate sense of urgency, and have the right to know!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As an origin story, this was a great movie. I walked away from the theater with a huge smile on my face and an "I can't wait to see that again" feeling. It might be the first movie in over a decade that I will go back to see at the theater more than once. I loved it, and the fight between the MUTO and Godzilla was such an awesome payoff, the teasing throughout was frustrating but in a good way. It was nice to see a movie play with this kind of tease, not just blow your load halfway through you know? Like how many times would we want to see Godzilla fight the same guys in the same setting?

You can't please them all, and most people who come on sites like IGN tend to be boring old bastards who just like to find things to **** about. People tend to forget that movies started as a form of entertainment, and to me, THAT is the only stick which I use to measure a movies greatness, and this movie was ABSOLUTELY entertaining.

The people complaining about there being not enough Godzilla, as this is an origin movie, you can't expect him to just stomp his way through the first scene.

I really like that they downplayed the human significance in this movie, and made it mostly about the Kaiju. The humans were no doubt the main driving force behind the plot, but at the same time they seemed like a background element in the movie. This fascinating mix was a nice change of pace. At the end of the day, it must be difficult to balance the human/Kaiju elements of the story, in a movie like this, but we have to ask ourselves, do we really WANT the human element to be more present than what it was? In a movie about giant monsters fighting each other?

When the Military devised it's brainless plan of nuking all 3 Kaiju I nearly died of disappointment, to see a movie I was loving so much play with such a stupid idea...... then I got to watch the MUTO's take that idea, and rip it to piece's, in the exact way it deserved to be.

My only disappointment, was that Bryan Cranston died way too quickly, I would have liked to see Cranston and Aaron Taylor swap places in the story. I agree with the writers that having both characters exist in the movies plot would have been very silly and too cliché.

The best moment, was hands down, Godzilla breathing his radioactive breath down the MUTO's throat, so....freaking....boss.

I have never seen this movie, and I do not want to be malevolent toward the director, I do not think that it should have been made though because look at it, there is a book and its almost related to King Kong etc., and for all the otherI have never seen this movie, and I do not want to be malevolent toward the director, I do not think that it should have been made though because look at it, there is a book and its almost related to King Kong etc., and for all the other people trashing other critics it is just an opinion of their own when the director gives something stating it that will be the fact. It was not something that I saw as necessarily good for them. If anything it would give the really young kids nightmares for about a month and make older kids more hyper-and probably the young ones also. The audience was mostly fathers with young kids in tow. What can you say about a remake of a not so classic monster movie?-well, what I said works for me. Expand

To be fair, I think it's the productions' fault for not making the movie a movie for all. They mainly targeted the avid Godzilla fans.
And yeah, the human story is not good.
But overall, this movie is great.

You get theThis feels like boilerplate for a much better sequel. Above average high-budget CG (partly thanks to Andy Serkis), plot can be weak and predictable, but the climatic battle has plenty of redonkulously uplifting fan service. You get the feeling that director Gareth Edwards forgot that if you're doing a franchise reboot, you have a checklist to fill out, and he only remembered this late into the film. Also this film dabbles in the same mistake that the Transformers films in that there way to much focus, on the unimportant humans, but luckily to much less of a degree due to both doing it less, and recognizing that giant monsters are not the best at giving intellegible dialogue. Watanabe plays the only person who knows what the hell is going on, but we get stuck with Johnson's character who is exhibiting far less intelligence about the situation than he should be. It's not a bad movie, it's just a movie that clearly shows you that it can be better. For a sequel, either Evans needs to learn how a giant monster movie should work, or Legendary should hand it over to either Guillermo Del Toro, Neill Blomkamp, or the Wachowskis. Expand
