Hollywood has once again taken a classic story and made it all about America. The trailers looked amazing but the reality of the film is a Greys Anatomy type want to be tear jerker about a family who is torn apart.

It was like someone said "hey, lets make an awesome Godzilla trailer, with all the best parts of the movie and then pad the movie out with lots of daytime tv quality acting and script writing to save money. Also, lets put heaps of Bryan Cranston in the clip but only get him on set for 6 weeks to get enough shots for a trailer because that will sell tickets. People love Bryan Cranston. He's so hot right now."

The problem is that the set up of the characters relationships isn't substantial enough, and you just don't care. I wasn't worried for the well being of the characters, and didn't really care what was happening to anyone in the cities. There were no moments when my heart was beating faster or where I gripped by bag of popcorn even slightly.

As others have said, watch Cloverfield again. That was a real monster movie.

The redesign and reintroduction of the king of monsters is fantastic and he is truly mesmerizing when on screen. Just don't expect to him being on screen too much. There's a lot of focus elsewhere for big chunks of the movie such as when we're with the human characters or the other monsters in the film. It's not that these portions of the film aren't good but after a while you do expect to see a bit more Godzilla in a film called 'Godzilla'. It's like when you go to see a band and the support act is good but have an obnoxiously long set so you're standing there thinking "Okay you guys aren't bad but you're not the reason I came here. Wrap it up." But when the headliner finally appears it is just un-freaking-believable.
The acting is decent though not outstanding. Bryan Cranston puts in the best performance but that was kind of a given. Birds fly really well, fish swim really well and Bryan Cranston acts really well. Aaron Taylor Johnson has the most screen time and there's nothing really wrong with his performance it's just not his most impressive one. Although that's mainly because the writing of them film rarely calls for him to show anything other than worry, angst or fear.
Could it be better? Yeah but it's still a huge leap in the right direction, a triumphant return for everyones favourite kaiju. For people new to the franchise it would be a great introduction. For those long time fans it is tremendously satisfying to see Godzilla have his dignity restored more than a decade since the last horrific attempt that we can all finally forget about.

I was expecting a serious reboot of the Godzilla films, however this film kept the same hokey tone of the originals. The over-the-top soundtrack while people were simply walking around took me right out of the film. It's alright... I can see why fans of the original Godzilla would love this movie. I'm just not a Godzilla fan to begin with. I just wish humans had a bigger role in this film to save themselves. At least it wasn't terrible... also, I didn't realize that Godzilla likes to constantly take naps. He wakes up from the sea, fights, sleeps, fights some more, takes another nap, wins the last battle, and then goes back into the ocean to sleep until another giant monster appears. Expand

Godzilla and the Muto are great, the look cool and when they fight it's great, but we don't see much of it, mainly just in the end. The titular character is mostly just treated as a backdrop for the human conflict, which while watching Aaron Taylor Johnson's and Bryan Cranston and their struggle wasn't bad, it wasn't great either. The middle of the movie was pretty boring. We get to see Godzilla for the first time (as in all of him) and right before a huge fight starts, the movie cuts away and we don't see any of it. Ultimately, it's still a good movie but the sequel has a lot of room for improvement if you get what I mean. Expand

It seems that directors cannot quiet please everyone on these monster movies or strike a balance with how much a monster should be shown. I like how Pacific Rim came right out the gate and got into the monsters. Then you have Peter Jackson King Kong..which practically ran an hour and half until you saw the Monster. True character development is important but uninteresting character development can a weigh a movie down. I thought this was the case with Godzilla, it seemed that there were much more interesting things going on than what Aaron Taylor was talking about. He seemed like a very straight forward lead, where as Byron Cranston was much more colorful but was killed in the first 1/4 of the movie. Expand

Think District 9 with monsters instead of aliens. Fast forward four years later, thanks to the critical success of his first full length indie feature, and Edwards, who has been given the keys to the commercial kingdom, is front and centre in adapting the King of Monsters in only the second Americanized version since the abysmal yet highly popcorn-crunchingly entertaining Godzilla remake from Roland Emmerich from 1998. Entrusted with a massive $160 million dollar budget from Warner Bros. Pictures, after acquiring the rights of the iconic beast from Toho in 2010, Edwards proves that Godzilla reigns at destroying one thing, and one thing only, the promise of young filmmakers career’s.

Godzilla is a large beast to discuss in one review or twenty-seven for that matter (since there has been about twenty-seven film adaptations of the beast) since his birth back in 1954. For his sixtieth birthday, Godzilla has been given the royal treatment, having its largest budget to date, a strong international cast, and the biggest presence on screen thanks to a belief that bigger is better. That belief is shot down with the help of this film. With screens growing in size (IMAX, AVX, etc.), ticket prices getting a radioactive hike and the God of Monsters terrorizing cities solely based on its sheer size, something’s gotta give, but never does.

For the first time in the creature’s existence, Godzilla is not the centre of attention. In fact, the monster itself only makes up for mere minutes of the film. Adopting a very Nolan-esque, if not J.J Abrams approach to minimizing the beast’s reveal before the film’s premiere and within the film, Edwards focuses less on the destruction of Godzilla, and more on the presence monsters have on a small group of people on earth. Basically, a rehashing of Edwards’ Monsters, with a much bigger budget.

Unfortunately for Edwards, instead of keeping his vision and artistic integrity intact, he decides to allow Hollywood, and the symbol of Godzilla himself, to consume him, into something I like to call, the symptoms of a Hollywood film. Edwards succumbs to; foggy glass shots where characters wipe their windows for a big reveal at the monster; children noticing things before adults, monsters and rain (lots of it) and my favourite, crazy guy who proves us all that he wasn’t crazy. Godzilla is one big ‘told ya so’, when the summer blockbuster season is a large example of so many times we go into a film, hoping to be surprised, but being delivered exactly what we expected instead.

Like any other huge blockbuster film recently (see: The Watchmen, X: Men First Class, The Wolverine), the film begins to explain the origins of the giant lizard, this time dating it back to radioactive testings done in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the 1940′s. Deep rooted in one of the most tragic time’s in our world’s history, Dr. Ichiro Serizawa (Ken Wantanabe) explains how the radioactive bombs were done less as a test, and more of a means to destroy the unexplained and mysterious creature found deep in the ocean. Unknown to scientists then, but the monstrosity fed off the radiation being used, making it stronger as opposing to killing it. Since his disappearance, the God of Creatures has since been absent from the world. Until, in 1999, when engineer Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston in his most annoying role yet) experiences the devastation of electrical shocks taking out the power at his radioactive plant, that leads to chaos and causes him to lose his wife Sandra Brody (Juliette Binoche) and many of his co-workers. Left to raise his son Ford (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) alone, Ford grows up becoming a bomb specialist for the United States Army (how appropriate), distancing his father from his family due to his obsession with the mysteries of the events the day his wife was taken from him. Fifteen years later and after returning after fourteen months on tour, Ford returns to San Francisco to his wife Elle (Elizabeth Olsen) and his son Sam (Carson Bolde), only to be summoned by his father for some unfinished business that might lead the end of the world as we know it.

The summer movie season has recently been infamous for spewing out relentless amounts of superhero films and unexpected heroes. Godzilla is no different than any of these films, finding an unlikely hero in the process of ripping the essence of the ferocity and symbolic destructive nature that is Godzilla. One of the biggest problems of this adaptation of Godzilla lies in the dubious marketing tactics for the film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. With Godzilla being the hero, this didn't focus on him being a "monster". This mainly focused on other monsters, and Godzilla was only in for about 15 minutes of the movie. I was extremely bored during the film. There wasn't enough action either. Also, there was a lack of dialogue. When there was dialogue, it was very vague. I thought this movie would be better. This isn't even a Godzilla movie. If you are a Godzilla fan, skip this. Godzilla saves the city and doesn't fight with anyone at all in the film. Expand

Directed - Gareth Edwards

In 1954 the Toho Film Company made a picture about a huge dinosaur-like monster that rampaged through Tokyo. It was only 93 minutes long but it spawned a legend that has lasted 60 years and 28 (Japanese) films. I am, of course, referring to the colossus that is Godzilla.

Fast forward to 2014 and the newest incarnation of the world's most famous kaiju. Godzilla is an icon and the director, Gareth Edwards, had a mammoth task to overcome; how to bring the monster into the 21st Century without angering the fans.

The film begins with some original opening credits; words are redacted before the viewers' eyes, leaving only the names of the cast. This plays out over footage, supposedly from the 1950s, showing radars, military personnel and, finally, a large nuclear explosion at Bikini Atoll (the first of many references to actual events and /or classic Godzilla movies ).

We jump to 1999 and meet Dr. Ichiro Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) who is investigating the skeleton of a large, prehistoric creature found in the Philippines. Then we zoom over to Japan where Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) is concerned about the nuclear plant where he works. Disaster obviously ensues and what follows is a sequence reminiscent of the Fukushima disaster which occurred only a few years ago.

And now we are up to date. Joe's son, Ford, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, is happily living in San Francisco with his wife (Elizabeth Olsen) and young son.

At this point I would like to say that I was slightly disturbed at watching these two young actors playing lovers as, in my head, they are the Maximoff siblings (I know, I know, it's not real but I can still have my opinion).

Father and son are eventually reunited and that's where the action really begins.

Cranston is brilliant as a father who feels like he has lost it all; both traumatised and unhinged in equal measure. Watanabe is the yin to Cranston's yang; calm and collected to a point where some of his dialogue is barely above a whisper.

The younger actors; Taylor-Johnson and Olsen, are not as strong in their roles. Olsen is not given much to do except cry and run. In fact, one downside of this movie is that there is a distinct lack of strong female characters.

Taylor-Johnson has a larger part to play but he doesn't quite fulfil the leading man role. He isn't entirely convincing as an action star but neither plausible as desperate family man. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a good actor but he wasn't given enough to work with. The script is basic with Cranston's impassioned ranting (heard in the trailer) as the only stand out part.

But to most, it isn't the human cast that people care about. Does the 2014 version of Godzilla make the grade? In short, yes. He bears a resemblance to the original creature but without the look of a rubber suit. You could believe that there is a dinosaur-like monster out there. As you have probably gathered from the many trailers, Godzilla isn't the only kaiju in the movie but I will leave what they are, and why they are there, as a surprise.

And then there is THAT roar. Spine tingling with a bass deep enough to turn your internal organs to mush, perfect.

At several points in the film, just as the audience thinks it might be treated to a monster smackdown, the focus is always pulled back to the less interesting human story. However, the final battle is worth waiting for, if not a little short. Gareth Edwards has held enough back for the inevitable sequel (pending box office results).

There are small niggles here and there but I was always a fan of the King of Monsters (another classic reference) and there is enough here to remind us of the creature we fell in love with.

Bonus points if you spot the reference to another kaiju which appears in the first half of the film.

Rating - 7/10

Story: 7/10 Decent
Acting: 7/10 Decent (10/10 Amazing for Bryan Cranston)
Spectacle: 10/10 Amazing

Overall Score: 9/10 Great
Verdict: Go see it if you like epic disaster movies or monster carnage

A brand new start and also an homage to previous Godzilla movies, this new film combines the best of disaster epics and monster brawls in one package deal, yet seems to forget a few things behind when portraying the human story underneath it all (but who wanted to watch this movie for the human story?). The beginning plot with Joe (portrayed by Bryan Cranston of "Breaking Bad" fame) witnessing the traumatic effects of (what's soon to be revealed as) giant dormant monsters and desperately wanting to find answers, is really interesting and gets you emotionally invested in the non-monster side of the film. Sadly, the trailer shows almost all of Cranston's scenes because he dies as a result of the carnage from the first monster debut at about 45 minutes into the film. This is pretty sad, as his acting stands leagues ahead of everyone else in the film. In his wake, we're left with following his son Ford (played by former Kick-Ass, Aaron Taylor-Johnson) who while believable as a emotionally-damaged son and still caring father and husband to his own family, comes off as wooden and emotionless in scenes where he's confronted with the brutality of kaiju destruction. He seems to forget the urgency and danger of what's happening except in scenes where he reminds others of it. Ken Watanabe plays the lead expert on Godzilla, part of a secret corporation whose main goal is to study the monster since its discovery in the 1950s, yet always seems to have a strained confused look on his face when looking at... well... anything. While the corporation is worldwide, his role seems to be there for two reasons: 1) to be the token Japanese guy because this is a Godzilla movie and 2) to be the only one in the story who (like the audience) wants the American military to back off and let the monsters duke it out. "Let them fight!"

Enough about the humans... GODZILLA AND MONSTERS! Like a true Godzilla film, this isn't just a disaster film about a giant monster rampaging through civilization. Godzilla is the strangely-accepted solution to dealing with OTHER monsters. We're introduced to 2 giant bug-like MUTO (massive unidentified terrestrial organism), one male and one female, who have awoken from their dormancy to begin mating season in San Francisco. These big beasties love radiation and emit EMP-like signals that thwart all major military equipment within range. With both a first round in Honolulu between the male MUTO and Godzilla, and the main 2v1 battle in San Francisco, too much of the monster fighting action is portrayed in the background, watched second-hand on TV screen, or quickly cut-away from to the human story. Only at the end, do we get to see full-on unadulterated monster-on-monster-on monster action, which makes the entirety of the movie worth it, especially with Godzilla's secret weapon and finishing move. That scene is almost worth the price of your movie ticket on its own.

In summary, "Godzilla" is a film that returns to formula on monster movies. While it take a while to get the story going (about 40 minutes), gets rid of its best actor too quickly, and later peppers in a bit too much human story when the monster action is at its peak, it's still a great popcorn flick that's worth it for anyone who's been hungry for a truly epic movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This has become my favorite movie of the year so far. This is exactly how a monster movie should be. It was realistic, it was intense, it had my jaw on the floor for some scenes.

Let's start with the story. Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) loses his wife (Juliette Binoche) in a giant power plant earthquake but what the public doesn't know is that it wasn't an earthquake at all but a giant cave in where a giant monster known simply as a MUTO has hidden itself in a cocoon for 14 years since that day and is now being hidden away in a fake quarantine zone. Once the monster escapes it's left up to the only other thing big enough, Godzilla, to take it down.

Now I took into account that this is a giant monster movie and for a plot to be something pretty simple like that is perfectly okay with me simply for one reason, the execution of the story is done in a way that I feel as though this is how it would go down if there were giant monsters roaming earth.

Now the acting. Bryan Cranston just kills it in this role. In the scene where his wife died I believed he was truly sad. All around an amazing performance which makes it kind of heartbreaking since he's only in the movie for maybe 20-25 minutes and then just dies leaving us with the rest of the story to be told through his son, Aaron Taylor Johnson. I'll be honest I think I would've liked it better if Cranston had stayed alive and like helped back at the headquarters that was monitoring everything but that's just me. I say this because Aaron's character just feels a little one dimensional to me. Like he didn't have enough character. I cared more about seeing his wife (Elizabeth Olsen) stay alive than him and she's off somewhere hiding while he's risking his life trying to diffuse a bomb to save thousands of people. Elizabeth Olsen does a great job playing the wife in trouble and Ken Watanabe is great as always.

The CGI. I'm just going to run through this one fast because this is something I don't focus on a ton in movies but I was told how amazing the CGI in this was so I knew I'd have to focus on it for this and talk about it. The CGI for the monsters is just beyond incredible, Godzilla just looked all around great and I loved every moment that I got to see him and the MUTOs. Now as for the scenery I felt it was a little lacking, I don't know just when I see those buildings fall apart I had a harder time believing I was actually seeing buildings get destroyed. That's all I really have to say on CGI.

Now for our main man, The King Of Monsters himself. Godzilla. I had a few nitpicks in everything but this guy right here is the reason this movie got a full 10/10 from me. To describe him in one word, Epic. Just all around epic. His grand reveal sent chills down my spine and left my heart racing 10 minutes after the scene had ended. Every time that roar came out I just melted with pure nostalgia and love. This is exactly what I want Godzilla to be. He's not a "hero" he's not an "enemy" he's just an animal trying to take out things he feels threatened by. He didn't attack humans, only if they attacked him and even then it seemed like he didn't purposely try to hurt them. He seemed more scared than angry. I feel he doesn't attack humans simply because well... they're humans. They're no threat to him, they tried to drop nuclear bombs on him and he just walked it off. He fights the MUTOs because they're a threat to him. They want him dead and have the strength to back it up. The fight sequences between Godzilla and the MUTOs are something out of your childhood dreams. He throws these things around into buildings and the second you see his tail turn blue you just get this amazing feeling in your stomach because you know what's coming. ATOMIC BREATH!! Me and my friend saw Godzilla grab the larger MUTO's jaw and we said how we thought he was gonna break it's jaw and it was going to be awesome but what does he do? He freaking uses his laser breath and shoots it down the MUTO's throat until it's head falls off. My jaw was on the floor out of sheer amazement at this sight.

In conclusion Godzilla is a great movie with nice acting, good effects, and one bad ass monster. A definite must see for any Godzilla fan or fan of monster movies.

Worst movie from this year... Keep the 1999 version in your mind! and keep it safe!

Visually speaking.. Stunning! Sound... very good also! the rest... oh my god...humans are stupid in the movie. Spoiler: Go to the place where you keep all your radioactive waste, but as you go there you go with a bang (cars, trucks, helicopters, the full load) and you star picking at every little window on the silo to see if is there something wrong... until o see one where light comes out... and you open the door and find out that you have a 10 mile hole in the entire nuclear waste silo ceiling.. that no one ever noticed before... WTF??? that is just one of many...... And the part where godzilla after engaging the monsters goes into sleep mode... WTF???? and after a quick nap it just gets up, and walks away... WTF???

In the movie you can see all the references to some past events, like the tsunami in indonesia, the colapsing of towers.... nuclear disaster in fukujima... and at the end see the fat godzilla kamehameha the **** of a giant moth..... enough said! dont waste your Money on it

If you are a fan of classic Gojira (1954) and Godzilla(1998) then don’t even think about this movie. I don’t know what Gareth Edwards think when he making this movie, he failed to make an impression he also don’t have much experience.

Godzilla has been burnt into my subconscious for as long as I can remember. Jung would probably call her (yes Godzilla is female) my inner Goddess, but enough about my personal relationship with a giant anthropomorphic lizard . If you are a Godzilla fan, you will move through several stages in the viewing of this movie.

First you will experience hope. The opening credits are creative and original and immediately open into Bryan Cranston and Juliet Binoche acting superbly. Characters are being developed, plot points are being leveraged, foreshadowing is in abundance. Then, it changes, (no spoilers here).

Second you will experience fear. The realization that all your previous hopes have been abandoned and you are actually, yes, stuck inside an American military propaganda film. I can't think of a more heinous skin within which a Godzilla film might be wrapped. At it's core Godzilla is a modern archetype representing a reaction to the military industrial complex and radioactive pollution. Remember all the model tanks being smashed in the original Godzilla movies? Remember how Godzilla was reawakened by nuclear tests in the pacific? Not anymore. Now it's all, "Yay Marines! How can I be of service to the United States Army!"

Third you will experience disappointment. Regardless of the political sandbagging, you will still want to see a big monster fight. You will, and it will not be very good. It will also take a long, long, long, time to get there, with 2 or 3 fake-outs. Also, if you enjoyed Godzilla having a personality, you can forget it. Personally I feel as though the "evil" monsters (MUTO's as dubbed by the military in one of the most painful pieces of exposition ever to grace a film since "unobtainium" in Avatar) had the most personality in the entire film, yes even compared to Cranston and Binoche.

On a positive note, the FX are absolutely amazing. The physics of the giant creatures are perfect and the movie never shies away from a long shot which is a real breath of fresh air in the current climate of cinematic, close-up, shaky camera antics. It really has amazing production values and the team behind the visuals/editing/cinematography should be very proud.

Some might say I'm taking this film to seriously, but considering the dark tone set by the film, I think I'm on point with it's shortcomings. And honestly, Compared to most of the sci-fi / adventure films on the landscape (Transformers), this movie is practically "City of Lost Children".

So take your 10-12 year old children to see it, the enjoyment they will have will more than make up for all the films flaws, maybe. Just make sure you wake them up when the exciting stuff is happening.

If you don't go in thinking you're going to see a Godzilla movie - it's not bad.

One does get the feeling the monsters are more real than the characters running from them but I had a good time watching it.

I mean, this movie was and still is the ultimate tease! Ten years later after "Godzilla Final Wars" (Amazing movie by the way for those true Godzilla fans) traditional fans are left with this garbage. Besides my rant, let's get into a few details. (1) I barely saw Godzilla. (2) Every time MUTO and G-Man were about to brawl it out, for some d**n reason the scene was cut off. All of the fighting took place on the TVs IN the movie, that's ridiculous! I wish I was watching those televisions besides this mediocre garbage. Anyways, (3) Ending barely made sense. This so called "massive bomb" had successfully evacuated the area, by the terrible-acted-protagonist, in less than 5 min on a mini boat. THAT'S A MIRACLE! There are many more awful parts to this movie but to spare my fingers of typing 5000 characters, I'll end here for this movie doesn't even deserve my rant. Hopefully this disgrace does not carry out a complete trilogy. Best case scenario, Japan make their own Godzilla film and show America once again what a true Godzilla film looks like. This movie barely scores higher than 1998 Godzilla. I would score the 1998 version a -10 if i could. Expand

Enter Gareth Edwards and the team behind Legendary. What we have is a film that respects its origins as a kaiju movie, while trying hard to balance it with modern sensibilities. Sure by showing the monsters from an 'ordinary man' perspective and delaying the monsters' reveal, Edwards made a creative choice that is artistic but controversial at the same time. It would have worked wonderfully if the characters are strong like in Spielberg's earlier efforts (Jaws, Close Encounters..) But Aaron Taylor's character is not compelling that it almost derails the whole film. (a weakness of old Japanese Godzilla films too in fact) Thank goodness for the kick ass monster action and spectacle, while reserved for the final third, was so great that you don't mind those boring bits. Great re-start of the franchise..essentially 'Godzilla Begins'. Can't wait for the next installments when classic monsters such as Mothra and Ghidorah are re-introduced. Expand

You have to sit through a "human" story that is not all that involving, you get a peak of Godzilla or another monster now and then, building to a brief ending where Godzilla and company strut their stuff. Technically the film is great, and when Godzilla finally struts is stuff, he kicks ass awesomely. The director obviously is influenced by Spielberg and "JAWS", too bad the human story couldn't have delivered. This does need to be seen on the big screen, so you can enjoy the impact Godzilla makes. I had expected so much more going in, from all the hype and glowing reviews, I had thought it would be something of a masterpiece (as far as Godzilla movies are concerned.)

But its not (at least not for me.) For a movie called Godzilla, Godzilla is barely in it. I'm aware that it was the same in the original (the original original, not the Broderick one) but the original was due to budget and the effects available at the time. 2014 Godzilla does not have that luxury. Even the Broderick Godzilla had more screen time.

Still when Godzilla is there, he's F**KING AWESOME!! I guess that is why it annoys me that he isn't in the movie more. Godzilla was done right. *sigh*

As for the non-Godzilla moments: Cranston is fantastic, I really wonder why on earth he wasn't in the movie more? Had he been a more central character for the whole movie, then this movie would have been absolutely brilliant. Watanabe is also great, but again, he's barely in the movie and his role feels mostly needless. As for the rest of the cast: *meh* nothing special.

Overall:
I guess as far as modern Godzilla movies are concerned this is the best we are going to get. I hope for the sequel they remember who the star is (see title for hint.)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have two big problems with "Godzilla". First of all, the human story does not matter at all. The ONLY THING that humans contribute to in this film is the awakening of the three beasts. After this, none of their actions matter. In fact, the human characters actually MAKE THINGS WORSE by trying to use atomic bombs. So you could literally remove the human characters from the equation, and not much would change.

Second, the actual meaty part of the film - the monster feature - wasn't executed very well. For one thing, we barely get to see much of Godzilla and his two adversaries. The only major fight happens in the ending of the film - out of a running time of two hours!

I also really dislike how they handled Cranston's character. He was the best thing about this film, and they just decide to kill him off early on to make the film easier to write.

On top of this, the human plot of the film follows a very formulaic Holywood formula which prevents us from caring much about the characters. Ken Watanabee literally spends the ENTIRE FILM with the same crazed "oh my god" expression on his face and the same crazy dialogue, while his female "assistant" is only there for exposition. Pretty much every character is this film is a stereotype.

Having said that, I did enjoy the backstory that they set up for Godzilla and the MUTOs (particularly the part about the atomic bomb "tests" in the 1950s). And watching giant monsters wreck cities was fun as well. But overall this film is quite disappointing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie as a whole just really bummed me out.
For starters, they barely show Godzilla. I know people say it was to build tension, but there comes a point where you stop building tension and just start pissing off the audience.
Even ignoring that fact, the movie is annoying. It focuses more on the humans than the monsters. That would be fine if the human characters were interesting. They kill off Bryan Cranston, the best character, early off in the movie. All of the other characters are uninteresting.
I was just very disappointed with this film. There is one scene at the very end of the movie that bumps my score up 2 points, but if not for that I would have given this film a 3.
Hopefully the next Godzilla film will be good.

There are many times that the film builds up an epic fight between Godzilla and the two other monsters, yet the film will cut away and the entire fight will be off screen. When Godzilla is finally allowed to fight on screen, not only is it spliced with the human story so much that it becomes anticlimactic, but Godzilla spends the entire fight on his heals getting his butt kicked until the human character saves him. Unenthusiastically voluntary to the story’s development and cardboard at their worst, it makes the overacted presence of the original films’ characters feel like Academy Award-worthy performances compared to these “characters”, who tend to take a lot from the film it really, really could’ve used. It’s not a bad film by any means and the breathtaking visual effects and setting still makes me excited for upcoming entries. But I wouldn’t nearly award the film as many re-views as I’ve given to even some of the least likable Gojira films that make up a lot of my childhood. Expand

Not as good as the expectations, but it’s still an massive and entertaining movie that’s worth paying for.

This Godzilla reboot is both massive and highly unique, and the directing is just something spectacular. Gareth Edwards is one director I’m not familiar with, but with this movie he truly kept me interested. The things that truly stands out with this movie is the epic soundtrack, the CGI and massive and unique scenes that I never have seen before. There are much awesome things with this movie, but it got some critical downsides. The aspects of the movie that I find most disturbing is that there could have been more scenes with Godzilla, it felt like the focus of the film is on other things. Another critical thing is that it could have had more action sequences, and that some choices that some characters did isn’t well thought through. Aaron Taylor-Johnson isn’t the best actor for the main role, I think they should focused more on Bryan Cranston, who is an flawless actor. The final critical thing with Godzilla is that one of the main characters died, and I think that ruined the movie, but also that the ending could have been more entertaining.

My conclusion of Godzilla is that it’s an cool and massive movie that's well directed, but it got some critical things that lowers my rating.

Godzilla get a 7/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Thanks to the new Godzilla director Gareth Edwards, I must say in this new latest monster anticipation of the summer, Godzilla brings better sound, and visual effects, new casts and the first time they actually ever converted it in 3D and IMAX 3D. I am going to contrast between gojira 1954 and Godzilla 2014. I'll start with gojira 1954. In this first Kaiju film, this is in black and white, they speak Japanese and it's over a ninety-eight minutes if the film which that sucks to only me. Now next am going do about Godzilla 2014. In this new reboot franchise, this has new creatures fighting Godzilla in it, perfect sound, and visual effects, also in 3D and IMAX 3D and best action performances which I gotta say I loved it better then the 1954 one and other franchises before the new one came out. So I would liked to say thank you Gareth Edwards for bringing the franchise back this year. And one more thing to say that this is the summer's best anticipation movie I ever seen in 2014. Expand

Godzilla is just amazing, and the two Mutos he fights look amazing as well, the action was awesome and the Human characters didn't really get boring. Some things i didn't like were that the human characters didn't have much effect on the story and Godzilla didn't have a motive for fighting the Muto's, for some reason he just decides to fight some monsters. Also it was weird how he didn't harm and humans. Over the story and action were great, i recommend watching it. 8/10 Expand

This is successfully achieved asFrom the offset, Gareth Edward's Godzilla sets forth to distance itself from the perpetual laughing stock that was Roland Emmerich's previous attempt at bringing the Japanese icon to life on the big screen. This is successfully achieved as the film proposes a darker, grittier and more authentic feel than its predecessor.
Godzilla is sleek ,beautifully crafted and it's obvious that the studio spared no expense in rendering a Hollywood monster that would leave audiences wanting more. Unfortunately this is to the detriment of the film itself as the title character is more often than not overshadowed by both it's Kaiju and human opposition.
Edwards' attempt at blending both monster porn and a compelling story of human courage ultimately misfires as he fails to strike the mean between both approaches. These two primary concepts are underdeveloped and Aaron Taylor-Johnson's bland cliched performance highlights the lack of attention given to characters who show less life than there primordial counterparts.
However Edwards does step up to the mainstream with confidence and his Spielbergian influences add some degree of quality to an altogether under-whelming experience. The slow tease introduction of the showpiece à la Spielberg's Jaws is certainly a step in the right direction but the lack of a payoff ultimately negates the positive intentions. This along with the never thoroughly explored 'Man versus Nature' angle only aids in emphasizing how much more this film could and should have been.
Although sandwiched between some heavy hitting summer blockbusters, such as X-men, Godzilla is sure to attract significant audience numbers but with the final product delivering less Jurassic Park and more Lost World, it is undecided as to whether or not this is the film that will resurrect a franchise already dead in the water.

The movie wasn't a total flop, it had it’s pros and many cons. On the big screen, the film looked amazing and the attention to detail really showed in the CGI. Set pieces looked spectacular and were very believable throughout the whole film. Bryan Cranston did an excellent job and in my opinion saved the movie from being a complete fail; he interjected feeling into the show that other characters struggled with–this made for a strong start. Cranston’s character did not get as much screen time as I would have liked to see and the protagonists roll was passed down to a much harder character to follow. At that point, about forty-five minutes in, the movie became a mess. I spent the remainder of the film trying to ignore simple mistakes that stacked up. There was so much potential in this film to capture the emotions of the people on the ground, witnessing thousands of deaths. Instead of doing so the makers focused on the monster movie element which just became another summer movie blockbuster. Passing realistic time was the biggest con in my opinion, everything happened way too fast and that didn’t help the pacing at all. The last half hour of the movie was pretty shallow with a cookie cutter climax that was not only unrealistic but a compromise to the show's overall potential and integrity. Despite the many problems with what could have been a more meaningful storyline, it looked great on the big screen and kept me entertained for the first forty minutes. In the end Godzilla was loud, flashy, and made out as a hero, even though he likely stomped hundreds of people to death as he made his way through San Francisco.  Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. this movie was just an extremely entertaining movie. just a fun ride all the way through, just a great way to kick off the summer of movies. even though there wasn't enough Godzilla action which was one of it's few flaws it still had enough action with the MUTOs to keep you on the edge of your seat. my only huge dislike of the movie is that Bryan Cranston dies way too early in the film. but overall just a great way to start off the summer and makes me want to see more this summer Expand

It's a good movie. It remains consistent, cohesive and has its fidelity to the original. However, not enough at times that an expectation, though it may be small, it is created.

Gareth Edwards has incorporated all of the elements of the mid-50s tradition into a contemporary film that has several significant messages for our time, and is an absolute blast to watch. His opening credits, which no one seems to have noticed, focus on the very immediate crisis of government concealment of truth and prosecution of whistle-blowers. Note how he "whites out" information about the filmmakers and actors against background imagery of everything from Darwin's Origin of Species to classified documents on nuclear testing. The other themes have been much discussed and usually mistakenly by conventional movie reviewers who really have no idea what they are watching. This is a monster movie about the relationship between individual and state, and between individual and nature. Don't miss it! Blow-off the latest vacuous romantic comedy or the next BS transformers regurgitation. Godzilla is the real thing. Expand

It was definitely a lot different compared to what I was expecting. That's for sure. But, in my opinion, the movie that we got (with Godzilla as the semi-heroic monster battling against the antagonistic M.U.T.O.'s) is preferable to the movie I had predicted (with an antagonistic Godzilla wrecking things all the way through the movie). This is my new favorite incarnation of Godzilla: a dark guardian protecting the balance of nature, no matter the cost. The special effects are fantastic. The acting is good. The story is great. This is all that I could ask for from a Godzilla movie. I left the theater with a smile on my face, and I would definitely recommend watching this movie. Expand

If the film had more of this it would have been at least a nine. There are some good bits without him though especially at the beginning where a lot of the tension is being built and there are some good proformances there but then when it feels like it's godzilla time to take the stage we instead get another boring story line following a soldier as we have seen many times before. The reason I am so sad about it is that there seems to be so much potential that just isn't realised and so I would love to see a sequel as I believe there is real potential here. Expand

Overall, this movie is worth seeing for the sheer spectacle of it, but not for anything more than that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. the beginning (first10-20mins): great! it's a great start etc. the scenes with the scientists were very interesting.

middlepart: holy crap. i dont know how they could destroy that athmosphere but it gets very boring pretty quickly. the movie is 123 mins long and they spend like 80-90 minutes on a soldier with a very flat character. the movie is already long as hell but they thought "hey, let's stretch it some more" by including scenes that did NOTHING to the plot.
1st example: that japanese boy. he got seperated from his parents at a trainstation(boy in the train, parents at the station. doors refuse to re-open). the "protagonist" tries to tell the parents that they will wait at the next station for them. that happened at daylight. shortly after it's already PITCH BLACK OUTSIDE and they're still in that one train. oh and yeah, a giant monster attacks and guess what: the train conductor keeps driving that train until he is like 10m away from him. he was clearly visible even at night. (ill cut this short now) all of this stuff just to give the "protagonist" some "character". but that sheet didn't get a single dent. he appeared still very flat to me. all those scenes were like 10-15 min long IIRC and wouldnt hurt the film if they were cut off.

2nd example: the dog. sigh. "oh no there is a dog leashed on a palm while a giant wave is coming". gj on stretching another 2 mins or more.

overall consists the middle part out of endless long (somewhat) "lone soldier" scenes. honestly it barely adds to the plot and stretches this movie unnecessary long. i sat in the cinema and BEGGED this movie to end. it was unbearable.

the endpart(last 20 mins) oh boy, THE part everyone was looking for. godzilla fight! yisss
very nice effects, very nice attacks. that part really shines after that horrific middle part

TL;DR
if the middle part would get cut to a minimum it would be an easy 8-9/10.

I bring that up because they both had the same problem. They had very key components that make great movies that they just fumbled with and squandered away. The only characters that seemed to drive the plot anywhere ended up dying or just timidly disappearing from the moment. And Godzilla is this like god of earth who balances all nature who saves man from catastrophe, and he just wants to help us. I mean because that was clear right? He just pretty much destroys any city he walks into and doesn't seem to be all that great of a fighter either. I wanted fight scenes of Pacific Rim proportions, couldn't even give that to us. Godzilla is a Japanese baby, and they tried to make it American, if you follow me, and they failed. It was hard to sit through this one without laughing at what they managed to get away with in this movies. They possessed good footholds in the beginning of the movie and created a unique way to look at the Godzilla creatures and their mythology. But certain scenes and certain plot points nosedived everything. Too many holes. This makes he 1990s one look golden. For shame. Expand

The creators spent a lot of the movie explaining the existence of Godzilla and his origin. Of course it is logical to tackle that subject and explain why and how Godzilla came to be on earth and what awoke him to begin with. The movie leaves the viewer constantly deciding to love or hate Godzilla in respect - or fear - of his awesome power and dangerous presence. In the end, Godzilla unfortunately is a bit camera shy and doesn't make much of an appearance. Overall, the quality of the movie is great and goes much beyond action and explosions. The good thing about the story-telling style of this film is that if there is ever a sequel (for some reason) then Godzilla will not need any more explanation as to why he is on earth. There are characters throughout the movie as well but they all fail to captivate the viewer, but instead are simply tools used to drive the plot further. There is not much of an emotional attachment to the main character, instead I felt more attachment to Godzilla himself - not to mention I am sure that we were all cheering him on at some point - knowing full well that the main character consistently remained virtually powerless against the odds.

If you watch Godzilla, expect a lot of amazing detail, graphics, explosions, and talking! If you are a fan of Godzilla (or just want to wash the bad taste of the 1998 release "Godzilla" out of your mouth) then this movie is definitely for you!

Cons: Aaron Taylor-Johnson is nothing more than a discount Channing Tatum/James Franco combination with a horrific US accent, most of the other characters are two-dimensional at best, Gareth Edwards or whoever the photography or editing team seem to be obsessed with using too many filters at the same time to create seemingly nice but ultimately hard to look at pictures, and the mere fact that we barely see any fights until the very end gets frustrating in the end.

Godzilla is only in the movie for about eleven minutes, which wouldn't be as much of a problem if the human characters were interesting. Sadly, the only human character I cared about was Bryan Cranston, who dies about half an hour into the movie, leaving us with his bland, much less interesting son, who has little to no personality or charisma. Then, just as it seems we are finally about to get the rampaging monster action that the whole movie has been building up to, they ruin it by shrouding all the action in near-total darkness and throwing in two extra monsters that are in the movie more than Godzilla himself. Overall, this movie is a mess. It's full of tension-building without payoff, and spends about 17 minutes of its run time focusing on the main character trying to save a child who has no purpose in the plot. If you want a good creature-feature, I'd recommend Cloverfield or The Beast From 20000 Fathoms. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A really good movie. However, as in all movies, there are flaws, even in the old Godzilla movies. There is things left to be desired of the movie as per usual. But as a die-hard Godzilla fan, I absolutely loved it from beginning to end. However, I do feel that the monsters died a little too easily. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The worst piece of **** I have ever seen. The story is aimed at U10 children, and makes absolutely no sense. Monsters that grow out of radioactivity, would be more credible if these monsters ate rock. Godzilla fights them (who knows why??) because he does not eat them. He is an extreme oddity! Soldiers that activate a nuclear bomb (they carry the ICBM missiles instead of just the bomb, but at this point nothing makes sense and you have already started laughing) within a major US city and then realize they need to deactivate it. My god!!!! Everything is crappy, the FX are **** compared to Pacific Rim, the music is definitevely non-existent (in PR it was **** great!). The actors, OH MY GOD, they are a joke, the old guy (the seinfeld dentist, yeah that is his profile) makes you laugh, he overreacts to anything. The young guy is expression-less, well he is not even an actor, he seems to be a robot. An extremely weak argument, absolutely bizarre and crazy, and poorly executed. Its not that I dont like Kaiju movies, as I said, Pacific rim is a masterpiece Expand

It felt less like a film about Godzilla and more like a film about a soldier trying to get back to his family, with Godzilla fighting monsters in the background. I understand the desire to tease us, but at some point it gets to be too much. The reveal was worth the wait because Godzilla seriously kicked butt, but the fight could have been shown much more.

It was an awesome but frustrating movie. Whenever it comes out on home video, I will surely watch it again but I may fast forward to the good parts, if that tells you anything about the movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. it's a it's a ... hátnem is tudom mit kellene egy középkategóriás filmről mondani . Talán azt , hogy ez volt az egyetlen egy olyan film aminél azt éreztem hogy "Kérem vissza a pénzem" . Szerintem ennyit elég is mondani . Talán még annyit hogy 3D-ben neméri megnézni , mert nagyon sok helyen nincs oda fokuszálva ahova kellene. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok, This movie started out reallly interesting Bryan Cranston killed the first 1/4th of the movie then....he dies....WTF. Kick ass dude is the lead and dude is BORING so many scenes im like wtf is even going on. The humans has such poor connection. There was tease actions scenes then the ending was good the last 20 mins was good action with old school vibe and old school music loved that. But THAT STORY wtf was so out of place the actors were so off putting. Its bad guys im sorry. 2 dudes I went with the movies with we were roasting on this movie all night long it was that bad. Let me add if I see that asian man open his mouth ONE MORE TIME BY THE HEAVEN I WILL PUT SOMETHING IN IT. They barley even explained what godzilla was or where he even came from. The kick ass dude like didnt even feel like he cared at all. Expand
