The idea, I suppose, was to make a sequel and a tribute to the 80's classic at the same time. The result itself is not perfect, much less wasted. The film has its good moments starting in the second hour, and that should be enough.

Definitely a million times better than the last one. This isn't a woke mess, which is a nice change in this current society.
I also love how one of the characters calls out woke culture. Apart from that it's wonderfully written and a blast.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The cast are great, but it's just like a own brand Force Awakens for the Ghostbusters franchise. Lots of nostalgia and not a lot else outside of a standout performance from McKenna Grace. The big set piece at the end is a bit of an anticlimax considering it's a rehash of Ghostbusters 1 but instead of being on a skyscraper in New York with a 500ft tall marshmallow man, it's just in a field in front of an old house, and the worst part of all, and the thing that for me knocks serious marks off and leaves a horrid taste in the mouth is the ghoulish Harold Ramis force ghost. I know they had the blessing of the Ramis family but they shouldn't have asked for it, because they should've known how ghastly the reanimation of dead actors is.

The moment where a hand steadies Phoebe is enough, we know it's Egon, there's no need for anything more. Horrible. That said, there's more than enough here to generate some sequels with the solid cast and the post credits set up, just please, let the dead rest, fan service isn't a good enough reason to disturb them.

It lacks character build up or an original story but has plenty of heart and charm. It also has a nice 80’s family movie feel to it. It’s not a spectacular movie but it’s a nice movie.
Yet it still will probably make you wish there was more to it despite being a pretty decent return of the series. That is still at least more like the original than the 2016 movie. Even if it pretty much acts like more didn’t happen after the 1984 incident.
So some fans might not like that it didn’t only erase the 2016 movie but possibly the 1989 sequel as well. Critics who didn’t like it call it too much of a fan service which yeah can be surprisingly disappointing. It however it does still work as a heartfelt Harold Ramis tribute.
Leslie Jones called this movie a dickish move that it was made instead of a sequel to her 2016 movie. However, her movie is a dickish move since it was an unnecessary reboot that made believe the 1984 film never happened. Especially too close to when Harold Ramis just died.

Great return. Young Jason Reitman decided to continue his father's work and bring back the hunters who have long been gathering dust on the shelf, but everyone loved them just as much as they did almost 40 years ago. The plot third part of Ghostbusters turned out to be a very soft restart, to remind old viewers who the Hunters from New York were, and to bring young viewers up to date with what is happening here. Unfortunately, there is little drive in this film and there is practically no such ghost hunting, but there is a lot of pleasant nostalgia. The new characters fit perfectly into this franchise and there are all hints that there will be a next part. Expand

Being a big fan of the first two movies and the video game that essentially was GB3, I was hearing mixed reviews all over the place. To all the haters: You're wrong. Afterlife is a love letter to the legacy of the first two movies and clearly was written with allot of love and respect. True, it does rehash allot of elements and has allot of fan service, but it's not as bad as some critics make it out to be. Afterlife essentially finishes off the story that started in the original Ghostbusters and also manages to have it's own identity. Grace Mckenna steals the show with a fantastic performance, and at such a young age. Clearly this is an actress that'll be really big one day. Paul Rudd is his usual self and brings allot of charm. Newcomer Logan Kim is a hoot, clearly not as seasoned as his costars, but his charm grows on you and compliments Mckenna's character nicely. Carrie Coon is okay, but I feel allot more could have been done with her character. The rest of the cast kind of just fade into the background. Fortunately all the cameos are used sparingly and don't steal too much of the spotlight.

Overall:
Ghostbusters Afterlife is a welcome addition to the Ghostbusters franchise and a great conclusion to the original story arch. From here Ghostbusters has the chance to start a new chapter, which is slightly teased in the post credits scene.

TheThe film ignores the awful "Ghostbusters" from 2016 and makes a very direct reference to the very first film. And that's a good thing. The plot creates a bridge from our old friends to a new generation, and much remains in the family. The creators around director Jason Reitman, the son of Ivan Reitman, are very respectful of everything that has been established so far in the Ghostbusters canon. For me, this is proof that sequels nowadays don't always have to come off as woke and thus upset the fans. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is fun, brings back memories and continues the story, even with a sad side. Of the actors, Mckenna Grace as Phoebe cuts a particularly good figure. In short, successful entertainment all around. Expand

Jason Reitman is a middling director and it shows in this tepid sequel that took 38-yrs to happen! The light-show action doesn't happen in earnest till the final half hour and it's just wholly implausible, especially with most of the original Ghostbusters just appearing from nowhere, just poorly planned and implemented/executed. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film was like a piece of childhood nostalgia for me. I really enjoyed it as it was like a mix of a throwback to the original Ghostbusters films of the 1980s that I enjoyed very much as a kid and it also introduced/introduces the, I suppose Ghostbusters 'universe' to a new, younger generation - it has a feel of 'Stranger Things' (the 80s set US sci-fi show on Netflix) about it. I liked that Spenglers living relative is a girl and how into science and things she is - yes, she does wear the large, 'I'm a nerd' type glasses but I like her characters story anyway. I guess its slightly cheesy but I didn't care too much about that. I thought the visual effects were pretty good - it may make you jump a little bit at times but I certainly wouldn't say its an all out scary film, more a good, engrossing bit of escapist fun.

Thinking back to the original films and when I was a kid, I had a glow-in-the-dark slimer sticker in my bedroom - quite what that says about me is anyones guess lol also my dad helped me make a ghost trap out of a shoe box and cardboard toilet roll tubes, if I remember right - those were the days before the internet etc., of course lol. I thought it was nice seeing Dan Akroyd (guest appear) in this new film. I imagine the film would appeal both to older fans of the original films and a younger audience, which is nice... I'm all for follow ups to this, as I thought it was much better than the film of a few years back, the all female Ghostbusters film, which got a lot of criticism. I've nothing against females playing such characters but the film didn't really work as it wasn't really faithful to the original TV show/films. Anyway, I very much enjoyed this film. I thought Paul Rudd was good as a character who remembers the original ghostbusters and is taken in by the new discoveries in this film. I'd definitely recommend this film, particularly to fans of the original films, yes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a great tribute to the Ghostbusters franchise and not just chock-full of fan service, yeah, but the film itself isn't too great. The pacing sometimes feels a little weird, some characters aren't developed too well like the brother, whom I forgot the name of, (goes to show) and I think the film starts out a little bit slow. However, I still think it's good. It's got some great moments, and for what it was supposed to do and be, it did one hell of a good job. And also I did like the little bit of fan service. (coughs in Bill Murray) So it's a great movie, even if not too great. Expand

Afterlife is the kind of movie that leans heavily into the nostalgia factor and does little to really open the door to the next stage of adventures. I think fans view it more positively than they would have if the 2016 film never existedAfterlife is the kind of movie that leans heavily into the nostalgia factor and does little to really open the door to the next stage of adventures. I think fans view it more positively than they would have if the 2016 film never existed because when you have such a negative film that preceded it, You can only go up from there. And while Afterlife is by no means a bad movie, especially in comparison to the 2016 film or even GB2, It certainly isn't a memorable one.

The characters are underdeveloped to a fault. The mother is given no backstory at all, There is a character called Podcast because he has a podcast, and Trevor is your typical male teenage character. The story is painfully slow at times and the CGI looks dated even for a film from 2021, specifically, I'd like to point out the god-awful Walmart scene so heavily featured in the trailers.

The only two redeemable things about this movie are Paul Rudd and Mckenna Grace. Rudd perfectly captures the few attempts at humor in the film, which is more often missed than hit, but he is frustratingly absent in the second half. Grace is the true star of the film and really helped make it tolerable as this was very much her journey.

All in all, Fans are gonna enjoy it for the nostalgia factor but I feel over time it would be received as highly. It's tolerable but forgettable. There isn't a single stand-out moment in this film and it runs for at least a good 20 minutes too long IMO.

"Nostalgia is a powerful feeling — it can drown out anything." - Terrence Malick

And yes, I just quoted Terrence Malick in a Ghostbusters review; the years just keep getting stranger.

Anywho, ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ is the ‘Force Awakens’ of the franchise, something you probably all heard of by now, but not to say it isn’t true.

With all this nostalgia, all this “heeeeey, remember that from the original” with the little whimsical music cue note, which got on my nerves very quickly and that’s 60% of the whole movie, with similar plot beats from the original recycled for this movie. It was more annoying watching this with a bunch of people in cinema who responded to that “heeeeey, I do remember that from the original”.
Mckenna Grace was great thou and handled the dramatic material like a pro, especially at such a young age. Paul Rudd will always be charming no matter. And despite appearing towards the climax out of nowhere, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson reunion was bittersweet, even though I question how they all know where to be at the right time during the final climax.

The rest of the characters kind of suck. Finn Wolfhard has nothing going for him in terms of his character in this movie. Nothing against Wolfhard, but I’ve got a feeling he was only cast because of popularity for ‘Stranger Things’, even when the show hasn’t been on for nearly 3 years. Carrie Coon, who plays a terrible and irresponsible mum, but her performance was good. There’s a kid named Podcast, who was supposed to be funny even though I didn’t laugh or chuckle at a single thing he said. While I have mixed feelings with the movie, but overall, I still think this is better and more respectful to the brand name than the 2016 movie. This movie has heart and there was a couple of emotional scenes. How they handle the death of Harold Ramis was another element of the movie that I was mixed on. It was a touching tribute, even if it did feel a bit off.

I’ve been a little harsh towards director Jason Reitman in the past, but despite all that it was clear his heart was in the right place.

Also watched the sequel which was fine, as well as 2016 one, which was bad. So getting a new one that doesn't take into account the last one and acts as a proper sequel+successor set in a small town in the middle of nowhere with a younger cast and being directed by Jason Reitman, the son of Ivan Reitman who did the original, had me intrigued. After giving Ghostbusters: Afterlife a watch, it suffices to say the son did not disappoint.

The story follows a single mom with two kids who move to a small town after the passing of her father and inheriting his house and land. As the kids investigate around, they start uncovering who their grandfather was and how the strange occurrences in the locality are linked. For the most part, I enjoyed the simple straightforward tale that pays homage and respect to what came before it while incorporating its own thing in the mix. The performances were, in general, good to great with Mckenna Grace stealing the show as the smart and curious kid, she was wonderful and funnily enough, did more as a strong female lead than the entire 2016 reboot with an all-female main cast. Paul Rudd was his usual fun wholesome self and that's never a bad thing even if I wish he was in the movie a bit more. Carrie Coon… well she's Carrie Coon, I have loved her ever since The Leftovers and she always delivers.

Production wise, this was a great one. The sets, the props, the cinematography, the CGI, it all was solid especially considering it didn't have a humungous budget. The thing that surprised me was the sound effects had a strong punch and impact whether it was the equipment, the action scenes, the atmosphere etc, something I didn't expect in a movie like this to put as much care into but it did so props for that.

What did bring down the movie a tad bit was that not all of the characters were utilized efficiently. Despite having a 2-hour runtime, the script wasn't as tight as I'd hoped it would be. Also, the final act could have had a bit more to it in terms of the antagonist, maybe expand upon the lore or add something to it that is concrete since it was familiar and full of nostalgia.

All in all, considering the absolute nonsense Hollywood is up to with bringing back old franchises and running them to the ground by doing cheap and lazy cash grabs and hiring people who think they can do it a lot better than the original creators while not giving the property its due respect, it's so refreshing to see something that actually does not follow the trend. Jason Reitman I bet would have made his father proud. If you're a fan of Ghostbusters, this is a must-watch. If you are not, I'd suggest watching the original and then giving this one a try. And if I were to rate it, I'd give it a 7.8/10.

From the direction, to the use of practical effects, to the casting and performances. Reitman really gave all for this project and I definitely recommend seeing this film.

Its a shame its attached to the ghostbusters franchise as I felt some of the concepts leading up to its ending were quite interesting. The cast were excellent despite some rather odd writing choices (super intelligent child genius with an alcoholic jobless mum who spouts irreverent jokes and comments throughout the film? - a mechanic brother who fixes a car for no reason yet despite this obvious skill works in a diner because he likes a random girl he just met for 5 mins?). Despite all these odd choices it was quite watchable with some fun moments. Switch off and enjoy what's here if you're a fan of family adventure/action flics but it could've been so much more. Expand

The movie that all Ghostbusters fans deserve. This film shows how a great comeback should be made. In contrast to Ghostbusters 2016 it shows respect to the original and expands the universe. Its not without its faults but still its great.

Solid movie, does the series proud. I would have preferred the movie to not be so focused on the kids and there were a few cringey moments with the silly way certain scenes were handled, but it was very solid. The first two in the franchise were more serious, which is how I prefer it. This was still serious, but some scenes were trying to lean toward being funny to get a chuckle out of the audience that didn't really land at all with me, so I think an adjustment there would have brought my rating up to a 9 or a 10, but beyond those areas, the movie was certainly good enough to recommend paying to see without a doubt. But every thing I thought this movie was going to be , sadly it was. Its a GB kids movie that feels nothing like the original 2 GB movies but tosses tons of "Hey remember this from the good GB movies" and what I also really didnt want was the original GB showing up at the last 5 minutes and basically just making a Cameo. Sadly its all that.

The Humor what little it has, just falls flat. I never laughed once. The Girl Phoebe I think her name is was alright. about the only decent character in the movie. Everyone else was pretty much meh and non memorable or annoying. Special effects are fine the story is Basically Gozer Returns round 2 but with Kids until the last 5 minutes of the movie. The first half of the movie is pretty boring and uneventful till the first ghost chase scene which even then I really didnt care all that much.

Halfway through the movie I was pretty much ready for it to be over. About the only enjoyable moment i can say I had was the last 5 minutes of the Movie because at least you got to see The OG Ghost Busters.

Like I said its not the abomination that GB 2016 was This didnt disgust and repulse me like that movie did but at the same time It wasnt what I wanted in a GB movie. We all wanted more of the OG Ghostbusters and the movie to have the feel of those movies with the Humor and outlandish situations that makes it a Ghostbusters movie. Not 5 min of the OG Ghostbusters and a bunch of her remember the staypuff marsh mellow man? Remember Gozar, Remember That twinkie? with tons of little and some extremely pointless nods to the old movie. It just amkes you want the OG Ghostbusters.

Hey I understand they are old now but it would have been nice to get some Young Ghostbusters that didnt feel dull and lifeless . Sadly looks liek they are gonna make some sequels that I have no interest in seeing if going by the end of the movie.

It handles the legacy with care and respect while adding new great characters atop of lot of good fan service and humor. A great conclusion to the trilogy (The 2016 movie is a reboot and was even excluded in the DVD / Blu Ray collection). I say that the team behind the movie fully understood what made the Ghostbusters franchise so good, appealing and loved by fans. The story is set in 2021 long after the other movies and introduces new characters. I cant spoil the introduction scenes so lets get to a set up after this. Callie is a divorced mother and struggles financially with her two kids Trevor and Phoebe. When her estranged father dies in a small town in the middle of nowhere she moves there to start anew. However her father was more than it seems and this will change them all as strange events happen. It sounds not that good in this description and it is mostly because I have to avoid spoilers but it is truly great. The story has everything I wanted, is strong from start to finish and at the climax I had tears in my eyes. This is how you should finish a trilogy and set up new characters. I want more of the new cast and I am deeply satisfied with the conclusion. Before I continue with the cast lets take out a lie from Ghostbusters 2016. It was not disliked because of diversity or a female cast. The new cast is more diverse and is loved by fans. 2016 failed because it did not understand the Ghostbusters legacy and they even mocked it while the target audience liked this for decades. Now lets continue with the great cast. I am still impressed by Mckenna Grace as Phoebe. Such a great performance and I have only praise for her. Carrie Cohn as Callie is also really good and fully delivers. Finn Wolfhard as Trevor rounds up the family and does a great job too. Those have such a good chemistry that they never fail. The rest is also impressive. Be it Paul Rudd as Gary, Logan Kim as Podcast or Celeste O’Connor as Lucky Domingo. All characters are amazing and I want more Ghostbusters movies with them. Of cause there are more characters and I wont spoil them but you will get emotional moments, closure and a conclusion that I would use in film school for how to give a conclusion that pleases all fans. There is also a lot of fan service but everything works well, gives nostalgia and enhances the story. The humor is spot on and entertained me and my friends well. Like expected the special effects are great and capture the style of the old movies. Again plus in my book. The soundtrack is impressive too and of cause Ray Parker jr. timeless classic is present. Again they did everything right which is a fine description for the movie. Overall this was worth watching in cinema and I recommend it without exception to anyone who like the first 2 movies. I admit that the movie might not be a 10/10 but the satisfying conclusion and fixing the franchise is worth a bonus. Expand

Incomes Ghostbusters: Afterlife, directed by Jason Reitman, son of the director of the original, Ivan Reitman. I'll admit that Ghostbusters wasn't a huge thing in my life. I'm not a massive fan of the franchise but I have watched all the movies in the franchise. The premise is "When a single mother and her two children move to a new town, they soon discover they have a connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind". So does this honour the ghostbuster legacy or another failure like the reboot?

One of the biggest things I appreciate about Ghostbusters: Afterlife is how it respects Harold Ramis, one of the original Ghostbusters, who sadly passed away. His character, Egon Spengler, is treated respectfully in the story. Additionally, the other 3 original Ghostbusters return as well and are handled magnificently without taking the focus away from the new characters. I also enjoy the tone in Ghostbusters: Afterlife which is more of a family drama story. It ain't the gritty humour that was in the original but it works for the story that is being told in this film and it still honours a lot of what the original did. It is also shot in a wonderful way where the shots feel more of a contrast to the original grim crowded city. The shots here feel more lifelike and colourful which elevates the tone even further. There are some genuinely heartfelt and emotional moments as well.

One worry I did have is that the new Ghostbusting crew were a group of kids. However, my worry was subverted as the cast did a great job. McKenna Grace plays Phoebe who is the main lead. She is awkward and nerdy and super interested in science. A character like that would normally be quite irritating but she isn't in this film. She does a phenomenal job in making us root for her as she is incredibly likeable. I also enjoyed the friendship she has with Podcast, which is a stupid name though. Some might find Podcast annoying but the contrast in personality with Phoebe allows for enjoyable comedic moments between the two. Another actor I loved in this movie was Paul Rudd who plays Gary, the teacher in this new town. He is hilarious and lovable in this film. Surprisingly, the action and scare scenes are great. There is a great car chase sequence that I enjoyed and the scares are quite creepy for a family adventure film.

Unfortunately, there are some issues with the plot that I did have. Phoebe has a brother, Trevor, played by Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things fame. I enjoy Finn's performance, but his character is just so boring. He has a plot where he gains a crush on a girl named Lucky but it is just so uninteresting compared to the main plot. It's a lame teen romance inserted into the Ghostbuster plot and I honestly wish it was removed. This film also leans on nostalgia a lot! There is a lot of easter egg and reference to previous Ghostbuster films. It's fine to do that but this movie does it to a point where it is starting to cause issues for the film. There are a lot of scenes where it is characters just walking while finding things from previous movies. It just goes on for way too long and slows the pacing. The final act is also beat for beat the same thing from the first Ghostbusters but in a different setting. It might have been done for nostalgic purposes but I feel like it would've been better if they just did something different.

Overall, Ghostbusters: Afterlife feels like a proper love letter to the fans. It treats its legacy characters with respect unlike the 2016 version and it gives a story that is a proper sequel. It contains a lot of easter eggs for the fans even though it does lean on it a bit too much. Ghostbusters: Afterlife would have been a perfect finale to the franchise but the ending does imply a potential sequel. However, the framework that this film left would certainly lead to me being interested in the sequel if it does happen.

A disgusting political speech: parents and teachers would be inept people capable only of making things worse, while the very young, the most recent generation, the Greta's peers would be the exclusive depositories of the hopes to save the Planet, also because they would identify the correct icons, the right idols, those who knew how to fight and defeat Evil during "Reagan years". Psychological anthropology has always maintained that qualities depend on a subjective nature completely transversal to age, but Reitman is too busy running after the audience of "Stranger Things", fiction moreover much more balanced on this point, to pay attention to such subtleties.

People are charismatic and you take love from the beginning to the end. I was hoping that Paul Rudd would have a big role in this movie but they used his talents to make it secondary. Which is not bad but they did not know how to take advantage of their talent. The character of Finn Wolfhard is actually waiting for more participation in the plot but I think that the central axis of the film I do not know how to put adequate because it shows a little of everything. In the end it is a good movie to see with the family on a Saturday or Sunday, entertaining, jokes and references from the past. Good job to the producer and the director. Expand

Just look at the disparity between the reviews and user scores between this film and the 2016 disaster. Expand

This was a pleasant surprise. A clever plot, likeable characters, clearly respectful of the source material. The script manages to be funny without crass humor. This is a worthy addition to the Ghostbusters franchise.

It's a little heavy-handed on the nostalgia and memory berries, and it continues an annoying trend right now where old IPs have sequels that are essentially the same movie as the original, just re-packaged and not as good. This film also highlights the trend where lead characters are 'Mary Sues' and are perfect from the get-go with basically no character development or learning. The young actress in the lead role did a great job, but her character was boring because of this. Expand

Phoebe the child prodigy (who is not even disliked by her classmates), Trevor the driver, the Goonie podcast, Lucky for the quota. They are joined by Calie the looser, Grooberson the Ash of Darkness. The setting is not a city or a big city. You have come up with something very special. a lifeless small town province, with its cgi factory halls, cgi fields and cgi mountains, which are so artistically designed that every still life is bursting with tension. Where does a film take place when the makers have no ideas and are afraid of people? Right here, in the small town film set and the gravel square behind it with the blue screen. The film viewer is immersed in an immersive film experience and he becomes aware of the added value of reality, so that he is happy to be far away from the Hollywood fantasy hell, which clearly explains to him with what is shown, thanks for buying the cinema ticket, we wanted more not at all. By the way, on the subject of tension. The whole story is an uncomfortable copy of the first Ghostbuster with annoying children, bad direction and a bad script. To then take up the question of why again ... Expand

The kid actors done a great job and had superb chemistry together, giving me vibes of the Breakfast club, Goonies and E. T. all in one movie. A cameo of the previous cast was a welcome surprise, but the new cast done so well, that it would have suffice if only them were on screen. Learning about the passing of Harold Ramis as Egon Spengler, I was amazed they put him back to life with CGI, and I didn't even notice it was computer generated imagery. The lighthearted humor of the movie made it a pleasant watch and I would not mind seeing the entire cast for a next installment! Expand

It has some plot-line issues which will probably make you scratch your head a bit. It's also a little awkward in places. They don't completely master the same style of comedy they do in the original. It's a fine balance and some scenes lack the necessary suspension of disbelief that is required by the actors to fully embrace whatever it is they are acting towards or against. It's not terrible by any means, but you can kind of tell that they don't quite know how to act it out.

Some of the action sequences, as it is with modern films, goes completely overboard which always annoys the heck out of me. Less is more movie-industry! Stop it!

But despite that, there's a sweet, decently funny and quite interesting story unfolding in the movie. Apart from a couple places where it does seem to loose itself in itself a bit, I was kept entertained.

I wouldn't say it's a worthy successor to the original two movies. For that it is simply too much of the same, just in a desert environment. It is, however, a pretty decent tribute, which will make you want to re-watch the original masterpieces. Yes, both of them. I never understood why GB2 is said to be inferior. I love both of them, always have.

It also introduced new believable characters without defecating on the old ones; and it revisited the original story in a way that wasn't a rip-off or copy. Thankfully the comedy wasn't cringe (like most movies today), and the action genuinely made me fear for the characters. And most importantly I left the cinema with a smile on my face (unlike the Matrix 4). Expand

I honestly don't think you could make a better love letter of a movie. It hit all of the right notes, and did them with style, grace, and respect to the original material (especially compared to the 2016 movie).

Lots of moments when my 11-year old daughter was really happy about it and bouncing up and down on the couch, so it's not just nostalgia in play. (And quite a few moments where me and my wife were applauding the screen which is really rare). Unlike many movies I've seen in recent years, it managed to compellingly grab my attention and inspire awe at several points. (Now that probably is nostalgia in play).

There's two credits scenes, one mid-way, one at the end.

Direction was awesome. Script was very well done and on point. Production design was fantastic. And bonus unexpected Olivia Wilde. Cinematography was great too, and unlike too many recent films, properly lit!

Well done to everyone involved. So much heart, love, and respect in this one.

So much heart and love in that story too. :)

Good start, a little slow in the middle.
The acting is good and the charterers are interesting.

Was a little hesitant for this movie after i remember the dumpster-fire we got in 2016.
