I don't see why so many people can't just sit back and enjoy a movie. You don't have to point out every mistake. The movie was entertaining, that's all that matters.

Far too naïve. Granted, the movie is funny - me and my mother used to laugh a lot, but there are too much unbelievable moments. Although, I can recommend it for family watch.

I am so sick of the American media denouncing these people in subtle ways. The average white suburanite just absorbs it without noticing and thinks that all Mexicans are servants. If blacks were portrayed this way, it would have been all over the news. I would like to see Latinos stand up for how they are portrayed by the media. As for the film itself, it was terrible!! I can't believe it was released. I should have known from the stupid title not to rent it. I liked the idea of a white collar guy reduced to robbing banks, but that was only 10 minutes of the film and they were all in the preview anyway. I didn't laugh once, not to mention it was slow moving. I'm just glad I used a gift card for this one. What a waste of time. Expand

Another Jim carey movie that falls flat on its face. No memorable lines funny or not. Another movie that calls itself a comedy when it should be called a failure.

I don't think I laughed once during the entire movie, and the delivery was just off during the entire movie. It doesn't help that I've seen the original, which played the fact that Dick and Jane were unsympathetic characters to its advantage. The problem here is that Apatow tries to inject a little sympathy into two characters who are armed robbers. Throw in the usual problem that most screenwriters have never worked in an office a day in their lives and don't understand how business works and you have a plot that oversimplifies the already weak Globodyne plot line. This movie had nothing going for it. Avoid, avoid, avoid. Expand

Despite occasional hiccups like Peter Jackson's brilliant reimagining of King Kong and (okay, okay) the esthetically bankrupt but hugely profitable Adam Sandler redo of The Longest Yard, this is advice that still rings true 90% of the time (although most studios have obviously turned a 100% deaf ear to it). The original Fun with Dick and Jane, a fluffy but forgettable 1977 romp with George Segal and Jane Fonda as a successful professional couple who turn criminal after the bottom falls out, was no flop, but let's be honest: the only two things about it that people remember were a surprisingly amusing performance by Johnny Carson's old sidekick Ed McMahon and a shot of Fonda on the toilet, so it's fair game, I guess. This remake is actually heavier on the social commentary than the original, with lots of broadsides aimed at everything from WorldCom to Wal-Mart (and if you're wondering why it's set in 2000 rather than 2005, you won't find out until literally the last few seconds before the closing credits). When corporate up-and-comer Dick Harper (Jim Carrey) is made the patsy in a major scandal, he resorts to unorthodox measures with reluctant but intrigued wife Jane (Tea Leoni) in tow...leading to a good many economic-desperation gags that look like the punchlines that Barbara Ehrenstein somehow left out of her bestseller Nickel and Dimed. This version deemphasizes D&J's attempts to rob convenience stores and the like, a wise move that actually strengthens the satire, since the only real victims of these crimes are often the hapless, low-paid clerks, who if they aren't shot are sometimes fired for not making like Steven Seagal on the criminals' butts. And the best running gag comes early on, before the anvil drops on the Harpers' super-affluent lifestyle, when we discover that their little boy has, by dint of spending far more time with the maid than with his workaholic parents, has become unofficially Hispanic. Unfortunately, most of this film is uneven at best, with a spaghetti-on-the-wall approach to comedy that reflects itself most obviously in Carrey's between-Oscar-attempts performance, a throwback to his Ace Ventura days: when in doubt, keep the camera running and just let him make silly faces at it. The continually underrated Leoni is actually a lot more amusing: her reactions are really funny and delightful as she goes along with Carrey's wild schemes with a mixture of spousal devotion, bemusement and fascination. Alec Baldwin as Carrey's boss, who's played similar roles in Elizabethtown and Along Came Polly, is beginning to define unctuous corporate slime in much the same way Conrad Veidt used to define Nazis in 1940s movies. Baldwin's behavior, and the film's inevitable wish-fulfillment fantasy of his comeuppance is undoubtedly what will make Fun With Dick and Jane a populist hit: since we're obviously never going to see news footage of Kenneth Lay, Jeffrey Skilling and Andy Fastow being persuaded to play drop-the-Lifebuoy in the prison showers with several six-foot-three, 250-lb. dudes who can benchpress cattle and have lots of tattoos, many viewers will find this the next best thing. There's not enough contrast when you have the moderately rich going up against the filthy rich. We want to see somebody from the working class, stick it to the man. But "Fun with Dick and Jane" makes fun of those low-level employees that were hurt by the Enron fallout. This is the wrong movie to make fun of people who work at Wal-Mart-like businesses, because that's where some Enron refugees might've ended up at. It's hard to tell what this film's position is on matters of race and class. We're supposed to root against the mega-corp baddies, and yet the film seems to have a condescending attitude towards the working class. Expand

Expand

Carrey plays Dick
While certainly worlds away from Jim Carrey's best work, Fun with Dick and Jane provides plenty of laughs and satisfactory poke in a world where embezzlement and fraud within large corporations is very much in control.
Carrey plays Dick Harper, a man who has worked his whole life to achieve what he feels he deserves, the VP of Communications at the firm he works at, Globodyne. What he is unaware of, which eventually he finds out live on air, is that the company's stock is plummeting after CEO Jack McCallister mysteriously buys out 80% of his stock, thus surging the company into bankruptcy.
As Dick and his wife Jane (Tia Leoni) contemplate life without all of their luxuries, which eventually winds down to life even without the basics, they must come up with a way to get out of their predicament, which of course involves the other side of the law.
The film starts off in style, with Carrey's pristine comic timing setting up a wild ride of hilarious missteps for the hapless couple, but there are too many gaping plot holes that prevent this film from being so much better than it ended up being.
The scenes involving our two leads turning to crime are quite funny, and also when hundreds of employees apply for the same job sets up quite a hilarious surge to the top floor. But the dramatic downturns of the Harpers fortune definitely brings down the intended tone of the film, with one mishap after another, the film seems to open up avenues but doesn't explore them to their potential, instead shortening the film to give Carrey room to play, while Leoni tags along, seemingly undeterred by how quickly her marital life has spiralled out of control.
On the case of the cast, Carrey is on fine form as Dick Harper, is bursting energy which is now his signature is in full force here, but his screen time is shared mostly with Leoni who also puts in a good performance, again, the problem here being that there isn't much in the way of chemistry outside of these two, again something not fully explored.
Alec Baldwin also stars as greedy Globodyne CEO McCallister, his limited screen time is unfortunate as he is played out as quite an interesting character, buy one who ultimately isn't done much justice.
Its got its flaws, but for an easy sit down of enjoyable quips and far-fetched situations, this is a movie that might be worth a look.

A guide on how to get through during unemployment.

I thought I have seen almost all the films of Jim Carrey, but then I found that's not true, so I decided to start with this. This is a remake of the 70s film or you could say the second screen adaptation of the novel of the same name. I haven't seen the other version, but I must admit that I enjoyed it thoroughly. This is not the greatest comedy I have ever seen, but still so good with great performances, particularly Jim Carrey's.

A simple storyline, a couple loses their jobs and they find hard to get another. They begin to lose one by one, everything that belongs to them and finally the house is the last thing they want to lose. So they plan to do something very serious thing to tackle their situation and seems its working out so well, but for how long. Then comes their masterplan to the permanent solution and how they accomplish it is what leads to the conclusion.

The film was so fast, feels too short or like a TV episode. That means makes us to feel to have more, but it ends very nice way. The story might feel silly, but the comedies are so good. And if you like Jim Carrey and his trademark jokes, then you would have a great time. Truly, I haven't seen a good comedy from the recent time releases, so I'm happy I saw this, even though it is a decade old. There's no serious negative stuffs in it like drugs, sex or nudity, so I think it is okay for family viewing.
