With a masked killer and piled-up dead bodies spurting buckets galore of blood, the first installment in the trilogy that will be released weekly over the course of July screams at you that it will be crammed with 90's slasher sub-genreWith a masked killer and piled-up dead bodies spurting buckets galore of blood, the first installment in the trilogy that will be released weekly over the course of July screams at you that it will be crammed with 90's slasher sub-genre tropes to the hilt. And it is. The story zeros in on a group of teens living in a the town of Shadyside, which is in a feud with the neighboring town of Sunnyvale, with an advantage to the latter due to the stigma that surrounds Shadyside for being notorious for a bloodstained history of murders. The plot takes ages to actually kick off, as I think the movie got carried away quite a bit in laying out its 90s-inspired setting. Our teenage heroes are: Deena (Kiana Madeira), who, despite witnessing an accident, spends a big chunk of the movie in denial of the real threat, underestimating it and regarding it as a series of pranks. Her brother, Josh (Benjamin Flores Jr.), is a nerd, internet-obsessed introvert who's a firm believer that what happens in the town is an entailment of darker secrets. Accordingly, he spends his time tracing the murders over the history, attempting to put the pieces together. Additionally, there are Kate (Julia Rehwald) and Simon (Fred Hechinger), classmates who serve as the comic relief characters at first before the story takes a darker, more earnest turn in its second half. Things improves significantly from there onwards. We finally get a glimpse at the lore the other two parts would expand on. But it's how the film unfolds is what impressed me for it somewhat managed to dodge the traps similar films that try to capture the characteristic features of a genre in a certain era it pays an homage to fall into: either ending up being a mere flimsy imitation of the movies in question or a self-serious film that tries too hard to keep things on a light footing.

First, I think it's a pretty smart decision that of taking a seamless diversion in its general tone from a full-on cheesy horror flick to a more serious and more dramatically hefty one while keeping on the campiness with no skimping on jump scares, juicy blood splatter, rapid zoom-ins, to name a few, to the last minute, as well as occult and possession (sorta!!) elements, which are even at the core of the plot. That's not to mention a plethora of references to classic horror films such as Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Jaws, as well as an allusion to The Shining and the door-breaking axe scene, but that's beside the point, anyway. Secondly, and as faithful to the 90s era as it is, the movie doesn't shy away from borrowing the distinct Stranger Things-approach that has been the go to for any film lately that tries to balance out the dread of horror films with a nostalgic flavor, the thing that also, somehow, heightens the intense spooky moments and renders them quite unsettling, due to the discordance between the warm ambiance — that of nostalgia — that prevails the scene and the gory, shocking happenings that penetrate it. Finally, in its exploration of the mythology, the movie clearly takes a page or two from the modern horror films that revived the genre in the recent years. However, with the exception of some twists, the story is very predictable and also has a formulaic structure. And one could see how the arcs of the characters would wind up from a mile. To end on a positive note, the soundtrack is chock-full of cool, adeptly implemented needle drops. Can't wait for the even more messy and gruesome 70s horror!

It was a really good movie, so i’m confused about the bad reviews. It was enjoyable and it had that 90s vibe that I really liked.

Olivia Scott Welch doesn't stand out as much as Sam, but Kiana Madeira steals the show as Deena, delivering in her performance the teen anguish of someone who has struggled at home and in relationships but still doesn't know how to put this whirlwind of emotions into words. , as well as being highly skilled when the situation gets tough. The duo formed by Fred Hechinger and Julia Rehwald is another highlight. Simon and Kate, the two are helpful, but also demonstrate a more provocative and occasionally perverse and acidic side to youth.
In addition to showing the potential of what lies ahead, FEAR STREET: 1994 achieves by being a slasher self-conscious enough to subvert audience expectations, but without entering the territory of parody or excessive irony. Director Leigh Janiak delivers horror with an adventurous taste, bathed equally in blood and neon. Between teen dramas and axes, the film kills the nostalgia for the subgenre with an original work, which respects the classics without getting lost in the homage.

A teen, fresh, young, non pretentious horror movie with a lot of nostalgic vibes and a lot of slasher moments that we all needed to see it on screen again. Lesson number one: Never get emotionally attached to a slasher character. Made my day.

The fact that it's a trilogy announced from the beginning helps to create an interest in continuity, if only for the pleasure of following what could get worse. I'm really excited to see that more they can bring. It was so fun

Do not watch this series if you fear the gay agenda.

Otherwise, watch all 3. Do not stop after one or two parts, because the third one is the one that transcends it from a basic-but-entertaining story to a very good one.

A vibrantly fun and frantic neon-soaked throwback slasher, dripping in enough mid-90’s sensory abuse to make me rage at not being a teen in that decade. A high energy slasher that would make Craven smile from the grave.

FEAR STREET: 1994 is everything you want from a slasher - a killer ensemble of teenage actors, a menacing villain (or villains in this case), characters you grow to actually care for, and don't even get me started on the kills. Some reviewsFEAR STREET: 1994 is everything you want from a slasher - a killer ensemble of teenage actors, a menacing villain (or villains in this case), characters you grow to actually care for, and don't even get me started on the kills. Some reviews complain of the needle drops but they never once felt excessive, and to me only hightened the 90's mood. Absolutely amazing directing from first time director Leigh Janiak, and a plot that dishes out equal amounts of scare and lore without feeling bogged down or dragged out. Overall, an absolutely kickass entry to the trilogy, and look forward to the next two weekends! R.L. Stine is a national treasure. Expand

But as someone who really likes that style, I am all aboard. The characters are unique enough to make me flip-flop between liking and disliking them as people, which is cool. Established tropes get a fresh take. Once again, the best part of these movies is watching all the fragile egos freak out about how two girls kissing is going to murder their children, how this movie has grown legs and arms and goes around torturing white men, ad nauseum.

Miasteczko Shadyside to amerykańska stolica zbrodni.

Film to świetny pastisz horrorów z lat 90., krwawy i pełen humoru.

However, the character development could’ve been better. I say this because with the witchy touch they added to it made the movie a little unbalanced in my opinion. I know that with classic slashers you never have character development but for the sake of balance I feel like it could be used. It wasn’t boring to the eye, colors were nice. Originality was there compared to other slashers. Expand

Fear street part one: 1994 can be seen from two points of view: a first part of a miniseries or an independent horror film.
Seen as part 1 of a trilogy, it does very well. It manages to present interesting content, worthy of our curiosity and intrigues us to see the other two parts, as they visit the past, not the future.
Now, as an independent horror film, it is wrong in many ways.
Horror doesn't terrify, jumpscares are predictable, the soundtrack is cliché from many other horror movies, and the characters are contestable. This style of film is already so popular that you will hardly be impressed by this one.
However, if you see the movie with that point of view, one thing you might be impressed: the ending.
He is partially unexpected, intriguing and rewarding after watching the movie seeing it as yet another cheesy horror movie.
Fear Street Part 1: 1994 is an updated version of several different styles of horror movies, but it manages to deliver a good pastime and a good cause for more parts of its story.
