The tone has more of the edgy, joyfully nihilistic streak present in something like Heathers. Tack on some legitimately brutal deaths, and you have a very effective modern black comedy/horror hybrid in the making, enhanced by an evocative score, crisp cinematography, lively camera and appropriately grungy soundtrack of early ‘90s classics. Fear Street is like a big soup pot full of everything – there are shades of Scream, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Stephen King’s It, Halloween, Friday the 13th, and more. Watching Fear Street brings back memories of wandering around musty video stores and browsing the HORROR section for the most lurid VHS box art you can find. There was something sacred about that experience, like going to church. Read full review

While Janiak is able to easily tick off the hallmarks of the genre, and perhaps convince those actually alive in the nineties that the entire decade must have been backlit in aggressive neon, her film doesn’t quite scream (or Scream) out for two more films’ worth of context. Read full review

The dialogue can be clunky and easy to guess in advance, and there’s an unfortunate reliance on jump scares. The thing to remember is this is all part of a larger story, and without spoiling anything, that story does get significantly more interesting. Read full review

i haven't been excited for a horror movie in a while!! i can't wait till july 9th and 16th!! watch it, it's definitely worth it

A teen, fresh, young, non pretentious horror movie with a lot of nostalgic vibes and a lot of slasher moments that we all needed to see it on screen again. Lesson number one: Never get emotionally attached to a slasher character. Made my day.

FEAR STREET: 1994 is everything you want from a slasher - a killer ensemble of teenage actors, a menacing villain (or villains in this case), characters you grow to actually care for, and don't even get me started on the kills. Absolutely amazing directing from first time director Leigh Janiak, and a plot that dishes out equal amounts of scare and lore without feeling bogged down or dragged out. Well, Netflix and current culture have seemingly run dry mining 80s nostalgia and have now moved to wring the 90s dry.

Whats worse is the characters are all either unlikable or unrealistic. Then there are the relationships, of which only one is realistic and its a total solo act. I will say while the soundrack is loaded with 90s hits, the biggest problem with it is that almost all of the tracks featured were not released until AFTER 1994.

Which gets onto the real point. This movie is like someone trying to pay homage to the period who didnt actually live through it. Its just bland haphazard references chucked into a blender. With a shoehorned lesbian romance that is 94% just writing a female into the position of a traditional male role. Its both pandering and insulting at the same time.

The plot is boring but the writing and dialogue is worse. Its so bad that it makes me not only cringe at this film but it genuinely causes fear to realize they are going to do even worse when trying to emulate a much worse period in history of the 1970s with the next installment of this lame trilogy.

THIS is the garbage that you use to netflix and chill.… Expand

Fear Street Part 1 has moments and I wanted to like it a lot more than I did but it was too slow and cliched for its own good.

10 out of 10! well until they introduce the main cast.

The main characters can only be described as a cast of glee rejects. When they are not ruining a good story line with over the top drama or long bouts of morose whining; they start developing narcist traits and complete lack of human10 out of 10! well until they introduce the main cast.

The main characters can only be described as a cast of glee rejects. When they are not ruining a good story line with over the top drama or long bouts of morose whining; they start developing narcist traits and complete lack of human emotion and empathy for anything happening around them.

ie: They just saw a bunch of people slashed/killed, all the baddies have woken up and are out to get them now; soooo what do you do? Welp; time for a over-done forced "sexual scene" for no reason. Just made the already hollow characters seem completely unbelievable.

Really too bad; the underlying story was quiet good; ruined by forced messages and horrible positions they put the cast in.

Watch for foundation story and some funny/corny 90's nostalgia (jan sport backpacks, aol, 90's soundtrack). Try to ignore the forced messages in story and over the top soap opera drama.

2nd story is far better; 3rd goes back to awful forced messaging and cast.

side note; Josh/Benjamin Christopher Flores Jr. and Sadie Elizabeth Sink knocked it out of the park and where the powerhouse cast that made the films bearable.… Expand
