It’ll draw unfair comps to Top Gun, but the air scenes are actually done quite well. A bit too long and formulaic, but effective with its action and performances. Worth a watch!

They have some aerial assignments, but the crux of this film is their relationship. Major's character is very accomplished (the 1st Black Navy fighter pilot), but he still suffered from racism (past & present). Powell plays his wing man, standing by his side despite the challenges. Obs, the flying scenes aren't as impressive as the new Top Gun, but they're adequate. This isn't really a war film anyway, but an appreciation of the devotion and sacrifices these men had for their country and each other (it's based on a true story). Expand

I mean, I'm not trying to minimize it, because for the most part it delivers as it is meant to, but what should have been a very inspiring story doesn't get enough traction to get off the ground.

Jonathan Majors once again proves he's ready to eat Hollywood and here he's the person who makes the best impression.
With this film, Creed III and his upcoming role as Kang the Conqueror in the MCU, he is more than ready to position himself as one of the most sought after actors in the business.

Unfortunately for his co-star Glen Powell, who basically seems to be playing the great-grandfather of "Hangman" from Top Gun Maverick, the two don't share genuine chemistry and that knocks the dynamic a bit.

Devotion is an entertaining film and I recommend it, I would just say based on my own circumstances, carry a more moderate expectation.

A really understated and decent war drama. Suffers from a way to long runtime and a lot of scenes that seem to repeat. Mostly just boring unfortunately.

Although it doesn't reach the emotion of the latter, you gotta praise its commitment to both practical effects and a social cause (the fight against racism). Unfortunately, the excessive length, an unnecessary act (a very long sequence that takes place in France), and the lack of more tension and action scenes make it a bit hard to follow. The good news is that the bromance between Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell, and the discourse about challenging the system, are enough elements to at least not throw away the joint effort behind this production. When paying homage to a war hero, one would assume that the character in question deserves a fitting tribute. Unfortunately, director J.D. Unfortunately, director J.D. Dillard’s biography of African-American Korean War aviator Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors) comes up somewhat short. The film’s first half is tediously paced and includes considerable extraneous material, with a narrative that’s rather episodic in nature. The characters (other than the protagonist) and the picture’s principal themes (including Brown’s struggle to fit in to a newly integrated military) also feel somewhat underdeveloped, leaving some of the potentially strongest elements of this story on the table. And, despite an apparent intention to make up for oversights that have caused the Korean conflict to be called “America’s forgotten war” (as noted in the film’s opening graphics), the picture never really picks up on that idea to any great degree, treating the war as more of a backdrop than anything else. Thankfully, this biography makes up for these shortcomings somewhat in the second half as the story becomes more focused and considerably more compelling, but that’s not enough to save the production overall, despite some fine camera work and a solid performance by Majors as the devoted airman. This offering, despite apparent good intents, could really have used some judicious retooling before being released to allow it to live up to its potential and to give Airman Brown the recognition he truly deserved. Less of an action movie than the trailer suggest. And unfortunately it doesn't earn its runtime. What starts promising, drags on into a war buddy movie with unlikable characters, unclear motives and with an unclear relationship.

For this movie to succeed, it needed to be shorter, with clearer stakes, better characters and a better bromance.
