An unnecessary remake and not the same standard as Murder on the Orient Express. I’ve played games of Cluedo that had more suspense than Death on the Nile.

Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) and his moustache are back to investigate a murder on the Nile. Newlyweds Linnet (Gal Gadot) and Simon (Armie Hammer) are celebrating their honeymoon surrounded by their friends. But they’re not just their friends, they also happen to be super suspicious so when someone is murdered on board the lavish steamboat everyone is a suspect and it’s up to the greatest detective in the world to solve the crime.

My biggest issue with Death on the Nile is it didn’t have the suspense and mystery I expected from a whodunit movie. Particularly after enjoying Murder on the Orient Express so much. That was a better film with a much stronger cast, also the big reveal was less predictable. Seriously if you don’t know who the murderer is you haven’t been paying close attention because all the signs are there. You don’t have to be the greatest detective in the world to figure it out. Death on the Nile just didn’t work for me, while there’s good performances coming from most, Armie Hammer and Russel Brand stick out. That’s not helped when you put them next to the standard Kenneth Branagh, Annette Bening and Emma MacKey are setting. The casting wasn’t a total disaster, it’s hard not to like Kenneth Branagh and he’s clearly having fun with the role of Hercule Poirot. You just have to try ignore the severe lack of chemistry between Gal Gadot and Armie Hammer when Branagh’s not onscreen. I’m presuming Death on the Nile didn’t film on location, which is fine, it’s not always possible to do this but it’s best to make sure the CGI is up to standard. There was a few scenes with questionable CGI backgrounds which was a distraction.

If we’re looking at the whodunit murder mystery as a genre, I found all the guessing going on throughout Death on the Nile to be tedious and boring. Compared to a modern film in the same genre, Knives Out which not only holds your interest but keeps you laughing and entertained the whole time. I’m just not sure there was a need for a Death on the Nile remake. The original has to be better than this and it just wasn’t as good as Murder on the Orient Express. So please Kenneth enough with the Agatha Christie remakes, they’re of their time and you’re better than this. Recommended for anyone in need of their weekly cinema trip and doesn’t want to see Uncharted, for everyone else it’s skippable.

If you're a fan of Agatha Christie and Poirot in particular, do not see this movie. If you've read the book, do not see this movie. If you're clueless about the characters and plot of Death on the Nile then you might enjoy some parts of itIf you're a fan of Agatha Christie and Poirot in particular, do not see this movie. If you've read the book, do not see this movie. If you're clueless about the characters and plot of Death on the Nile then you might enjoy some parts of it for what it is, but that's a big 'might'.

The film starts with an entirely unnecessary WW1 backstory of Poirot's moustache. If I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't have believed that anybody would have thought it useful to invent one (Agatha Christie certainly didn't). During this, somebody talks about Poirot being a farmer, which would have surprised Christie who only ever wrote that he was a policeman before becoming a detective.

From this point, it skips forward to a scene where Poirot is listening to famous romance author Mrs Otterbourne singing in a bar. Oh, wait... famous author? No, in this version, Mrs Otterbourne is a blues guitarist (with comically long guitar lead) and singer. Of course she is. Poirot witnesses the main characters meeting, clearly in an effort to avoid having to film any backstory for that relationship (obviously moustache exposition is more important).

From here we jump forwards again to an unconvincing CGI Egypt, and things go downhill from there. The storyline is hideously mangled into something unrecognisable, and the pacing is literally all over the place. One minute the camera is wildly swinging in circles, the next minute it's panning slowly over people equally spaced along a railing (obviously supposed to be very stylish). Then we're flying high above a CGI boat before swooping down to spend an eternity in conversations that go nowhere, and we eventually find ourselves in a fast-moving gun battle. Yes, there is a chase and a gunfight.

The acting is unremarkable, although stand-outs are French and Saunders who manage their parts (or what's left of their parts) very well, and Russell Brand who plays Lord Windlesham. Anybody who's read the book will wonder why Lord Windlesham is on the boat rather than being a minor character who goes nowhere near Egypt. The answer is that in this version, he's required to fill the place of several other characters who are completely missing, notably Dr Bessner, Tim Allerton, Mr Ferguson, James Fanthorp... the list goes on. Some exclusions I could understand — every filmed version has cut at least *somebody*, but you can't remove characters like Dr Bessner and Cornelia Robson without seriously changing the story. For some reason, Bouc (who is not even supposed to be in Death on the Nile) takes a large part in this version and takes the place of Colonel Race (who is also clearly too busy to be in this film) investigating with Poirot. Additionally, he takes the place of somebody else during a vitally important scene, but at least he thought to bring his mother with him (which, again, would have surprised Agatha Christie as she never wrote about Bouc's mother).

Gal Gadot as Linnet either can't act or had no interest whatsoever in this film. Branagh takes turns being hostile and terminally boring as Poirot, and it never feels like he's really investigating anything. Nobody is ever asked where they were or what they were doing during each murder, instead they're interviewed about their feelings about love. It genuinely feels like Poirot is hosting his own chat show most of the time, with an occasional break for some gunplay or slamming of doors.

The least Branagh could have done would be to have gone on location and made the surroundings believable. That's half the film right there. Instead, we're treated to CGI, matte paintings and a completely impractical and unrealistic boat staffed (it seems) by white female deckhands wearing shorts (who only turn up to carry the body when somebody dies). Nobody seems to be waiting on anybody (although there's nowhere to eat anyway) and the world seems to be completely empty apart from the few characters (far too few) on the boat.

How is it possible to screw up such a great book so badly? Why have we waited for this mess for so long? Please do avoid this film at all costs.

I'll give it a two because the cinematography is nice. Otherwise it takes a great Agatha Christie novel, puts it into a stew of woke patronizing garbage, mixes it up and spits it out. A boring performance from all of the actors. Thumbs down.

So, here we go again!

Hello fellow film lover! Welcome back after yet another long stint battling logic and how to continue watching movies in a theatre with the existence of this petty virus. It’s been a long six months absence since our last review, and we are so excited to welcome you back with a film that, like so many of us have been feeling, has longed to see the daylight. Due to arrive in cinemas since 2019 (back when film delays used to happen not because of world threatening virus’), Death on the Nile has had its fair share of misfortunes. As you all may be wondering, the film industry is changing, and rather quickly, at that. With all that has been happening over the last two years, all it seems we are able to do is roll with the punches, adapt and evolve, especially when it comes to cinema and our deep, long love for it. As time passes and the clock ticks, we always find ourselves constantly adapting to the changing landscape and expectations for cinema. For a while, after the strength and importance of streaming services, it seemed as though, cinemas as we knew them, and movie theatres, we're on their way out. That was, until, one friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man came and saved the day. After the massive commercial success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, a film that could be argued, single-handedly, saved movie theatres as we know them, the relevance and importance of going to the movies has never been more dire right now. Fast forward a couple months, and February begins its reign with a film that has been waiting nearly three years to get the spotlight. The delay ridden Death on the Nile, the unexpected sequel to Kenneth Branagh’s surprise hit Murder on the Orient Express, finally arrives. But, aside from its cliched, by the number whodunit narrative, Death on the Nile provides audiences with yet another stark switch happening in the film industry today.

After the rape allegations of Armie Hammer, Nile has been in release limbo for a long time now. Yet, despite the final verdict on Hammer and the allegations as a whole, Hammer was not taken out or replaced in the film, despite the film’s lengthy delay. Unlike All The Money In The World, Fantastic Beasts: The Secret of Dumbledore and other huge blockbuster endeavours that re-cast their lead stars after similar allegations and despite their star power, Nile decided to keep Hammer on the bill, in the film and still credited fully in the picture. Sure, he may not get the most promotion in the commercials and hasn’t seen the light of day in years, but Hammer still occupies most of the picture, seeing he has a crucial role as the main protagonists love interest and eventual husband. Who would have thought, that after a few couple years of the #METOO movement in Hollywood, the response and importance of such a stance in the industry, would die down so quickly. Ironically enough, to a celebrity and star being known for being a troublemaker, womanizer and nuisance on set with his cast and crew.

Yet, aside from all the drama and politics of the film, the truth of the matter is, Death on the Nile isn’t going to single-handedly save movie theatres, nor will it revive a very lacklustre February for the movie industry and it won’t revive any careers either. Death on the Nile is a run of the mill whodunit with some fun moments that include some mild twists, shallow turns and expectedly unexpected narrative tropes that we have all seen many times before. Is it entertaining, absolutely; but does solely entertaining cut it in 2022? In a time where films means so much more, in a time when nostalgia are studios main star, reminiscing on the glory days and bringing some classics back and reviving them is perhaps why audiences are so keen on going back to the movies? Just like old times. Just look at Jackass: Forever, Ghostbuster: Afterlife and Spider-Man: No Way Home as examples. No one expected Death on the Nile to take this long to release, especially not its star and director Branagh; whose sights couldn’t be further from the picture, given his recent Oscar nominations and critical praise for his semi-autobiographical indie darling Belfast taking much of his time and attention now a days (and for good reason). Death on the Nile is a film that passes time. Like a lazy river of emotions, action, pacing and character development, Death on the Nile is another stagnant attempt of studios jamming as many celebrities and stars into one picture, and wishing for a hit.

Poirot without mustache

I'm a big fan of AC's book, and it's always interesting to watch movies based on her books.
I really like how they softly remake this legendary novel using not only modern CG(that was actually bad) but story adaptation for younger generation.

First - more drama for Poirot. It's really great that film tries to tell us the story of Poirot and made him more human than only cold detective. Not all things how they show him I like, but in general it was great and it's fresh.

Second - new characters and story are more modern and... it's good. I like acting and main idea how they adapt novel and mix with Poirot storyline.

Third - I don't like CG in this film, it's so poor and starnge. Awful, but costumes and ship were good. Also some controversial background changes - like women in crew that carry luggage and body, it looks really strange and even ridiculos.

All in all film was good, I like actors, and adapted story that is the core for detective.

This film carries itself with none of the class present in “Orient”. “Dirty Dancing” has nothing on the, err,”dancing” scenes that establish the love triangle around which the film revolves. If you have kids under 18, you don’t want them watching this film. Character development is razor thin on all points. Sure, we learn of Poirot’s past and scars(both literal and emotional), but his character has none of the charm present in “Orient”. He, like this movie, is a mere shell of his former self. Armie Hammer’s recent scandal ostensibly prevented the further exploration of his, the pivotal character’s role in what should have been a thrilling “whodoneit”. The film is overblown, overstuffed, shallow, vulgar, and largely unsatisfying. One wonders if it’s very release constituted nothing more than damage control and paying lip service to delivering a franchise-worthy film. Expand

Branagh assumed both tasks in 2017 for Murder on the Orient Express (my review) and the same criticisms apply, so here are excerpts from that review: "He drags things down with tedious cross examinations. Despite the dreary pacing and lack of any sparks from the underplayed cast, the scenery, art direction and cinematography are gorgeous." Pretty much sums it up...again. Expand

Let's start with something basic and that I need to get off my chest: Gal Gadot can't act. There it is. I said it.
Fortunately 60 minutes into the film her character is taken out of the play, so all the time left in the film after that is strengthened by her absence.

Now speaking of the film in general, the experience itself isn't bad, however it is one that feels incredibly ordinary.
Kenneth Branagh is apparently having fun because you can tell that he is as passionate about this project as he was about Murder on the Orient Express.

And just like that film, the cast here despite not being as lavish as the one of the previous film, it's a good cast. And it's clearly one of the main strengths of this film. Again excluding Gal Gadot of course.

The tone, the style, the mise-en-scene. Everything feels in place, and yet there's no real emotion.
The whole thing in spite of its quality has a routine weight that doesn't help the story at all. An empty atmosphere that lacks complexity.

I understand that not all films should be memorable. Many should just be about having a good time, and Death on the Nile has that, but I think they should also avoid feeling disposable.

The intricacy of the plot depends on how interested you are in the mystery, because this one isn't very good at keeping the intrigue going, and ultimately at that point, that closure ceases to matter, after all, the most important conclusion is for Poirot's character. The rest becomes almost expendable.

Death on the Nile is a basic, average, functional film. Nothing mediocre, just plainly inconsequential.

Told much in the style of other films featuring this storied protagonist, the film follows Poirot's meticulous scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding the crime, including his fabled witty and hard-edged interrogations of an array of suspects, all of whom have agendas that could potentially make them the killer. While this version of the story features impeccable production values and is generally well acted (including a fine ensemble cast and Branagh's engaging turn in the lead role, his second such outing as Poirot), the picture nevertheless suffers from occasional pacing issues that could have benefitted from some modest editing. Nevertheless, this whodunit is an otherwise-pleasant way of spending a few hours at the movies on a lazy weekend afternoon. It may not overwhelm audiences with its brilliance, but it's certainly enough to tickle one's fancy for lavish settings, exotic locales and a good old-fashioned crime drama. Expand

Death on the Nile is some-what better than the first film. Kenneth Branagh steals the show more this time as the sleuth Hercule Poirot. With, even a backstory to why he has that silly mustache.
Death in the Nile is sexier, more engaging and nicer to look at than Murder on the Orient Express. Emma Mackey as Jacqueline de Bellefort stands out the most from the supporting cast. As a femme fatale like character who wants back her ex Simon Doyle (Armie Hammer).
Who was stolen from her by her former good friend Linnett Ridgeway (Gal Gadot). Linnett is targeted while on cruise down the Nile. Linnett thinks Jacqueline is involved since she finds them where ever they go. The couple recruit Poirot to talk to her about leaving them alone.
During the cruise there’s a murder and it is up to Poirot to figure out who on board is the murderer. Though the first film ended with Poirot already told about the murder on the Nile, this film ignores that.
Death on the Nile isn’t as good as Knives Out but it is a good watch for those looking for more mysteries like Knives Out

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was an awesome thrillingly intriguing murder mystery, The story was good and the pacing was decent although it takes little time to settle all characters and motives, The music was good and the visuals and the era's setting it was stunning, The cast was great and the acting decent, The killers hints from starting was pretty clear but the way it's showcased as everyone is fair and equal suspect because of jealousy and money and some of them were ex-lovers and commies too, The murderers reveal was literally surprising, some scenes of animals sudden attacks throughout the movie was an nice detail, The starting with The detective his journey was great from war hero with disable face to a detective with lost love the acting of kenneth was amazing, The bar scene at start with simon and jack's dance/engagement and then the linnet's entry and her dance with simon and then the rest of Characters meet at hotel in wedding of linnet and simon while detective joins with bouch (He was sweet character) then the jack's still in love with simon and her following of couple through whole journey (it was obvious from 1st but still surprising) then the couple changes the hotel trip to ships journey for staying away from jack and then she still enters in ship with ticket causing the drama between the 3 and the jack's shooting simon while he tells that he doesn't love her and then the linnet's murder it was getting intriguingly awesome from then, The investigation of detective and the suspects as everyone and the talks which reveals personal secrets of characters and while all that the 2nd murder was shocking and then while in between suspect talk the bouc's revealing him spotting dead body before everyone and he saw killer while 2nd murder happened and when he's about to say his death by shot was mind-blowing and surprising the reaction of detective was emotional, Then at last all people in one room and detective's breaking down the killers intensions and plans and the reveal of killers as simon and jack it was awesome and there both plan of killing while being injured/in front of others it was brilliant move and then the end with both killing each other it was a great end, Overall it was entertainingly amazing movie. It was a cute one, but something lacked, I couldn't figure. I liked the previous one better, I don't know why. I can't find the missing ingredient, maybe it's the dryness of the situations, or the killings.

Great work, I hope he will not stop with this saga!

It is a sequel to “Murder on the Orient Express” and is based on the novel with the same name by the queen of crime and detective stories Agatha Christie. It gets really good when the cruise started and it is an intense murder mystery with a remarkable plot. When all parts of the puzzles are brought together it is a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Overall I am divided how to rate it. The beginning is slow and weaker. Maybe even in a way that others quit before it got good. However the later half is clearly a 10/10 for me. I give a 7/10 because it is too good to be a yellow rating (= average on Metacritic). Expand

Not surprisingly once you loose focus from the story in a movie it is a disaster and this movie certainly is a disaster.
To a non American there is something jarring about American bible songs/music being the centrepiece of an upmarket London club in the inter war era. As is the inter racial romance on the boat.
The first 5-10 minutes of the film takes place on a WW1 battlefield where the detective is wounded and suffers some disfiguring wound to his face which you assume will have some impact latter on in the film but it does not. When the detective appears next, several years later, he has no facial disfigurement. So what was the film opening minutes about? Unbelievable poor direction.

Let's get the obvious out of the way, the cast is great and Kenneth is still phenomenal as Hercule Poirot. The cinematography is still great as well and I just love how the colours pop out in its vibrancy.

In terms of improvements, the cast and list of suspects is way less than in the first film. Due to this, we get to spend a bit more time knowing them. Secondly, how the clues are presented is way more effective and clearer than in the first film. This allows us the audience to easily digest the information so we can solve the mystery as well. Unfortunately, the characters still aren't very interesting and I still forget the names of the characters. Likewise, the pacing is a bit slow and it even takes over an hour before the murder and investigation even begin. There is also a ridiculous stupid origin segment for Poirot's moustache which I just find so silly and made the movie longer than it needed to be. Although, this might be me personally but I find that it is very obvious who the culprit of the murder is. The film does do a lot of red herrings and misdirects but it isn't enough to make me change who I thought the culprit was. Overall, significantly better than Murder on the Orient Express (2017). It is a more engaging mystery this time and the resolution feels more earned and less convoluted. If you like murder mysteries then this is a good one to watch.

The reason I liked this more than the 2017 film is all down to story and presentation. The presentation isn’t great by any means but it’s better and the story after the first hour was really fun and engaging. The one major downside about the presentation though is the green screen. It’s absolutely horrendous, obvious, and distracting. It’s kind of embarrassing at points to be honest but thankfully, it’s only in the first 30 minutes of the film. The acting here isn’t as good as the 2017 film but the characters are more interesting. More of them feel like they have a personality and something to do although there were sections like the boulder scene being completely pointless. Gal Gadot was very distracting but she’s only on screen for the first hour and then is gone for the rest leaving room for everyone else to shine. Kenneth Branagh gives a great performance here and it’s a major step up in quality performance wise for him from the 2017 film. The story feels like it has consequences at points and that it’s actually leading somewhere with the characters. The mystery element was hit or miss. I could gather who did it before the halfway point but I still enjoyed watching the characters piece it all together. I definitely like this more than the 2017 film although this is still very flawed. If you like murder mysteries then I would still recommend Knives Out over this but this is a decent option if you’ve already seen Knives Out. Expand

If in the previous transposition Branagh's Poirot had an ethics (a Christian one: see the concluding "Last Supper"), in this he has a psychology and a heart, a wounded affectivity, a struck to death sentiment. "The film should be this: red with love and red with blood, private and melodramatic revenge, enjoyable whodunnit and mysterious divertissement" (Simone Soranna). His adaptations of Shakespeare and Christie are anachronisms in which he tries to insert what interests him, I wonder why he does not emancipate himself from the sumptuous canovacci to express himself freely, in this case providing his own version of "1917" or, better yet, of "Paths of Glory". Oops: a matter of saga, franchise & portfolio. "Cold, calculated operation" (ibid.).

Brand was surprisingly good, very believable, in his role.

The film also features some nice sunset/sunrise type shots, which I liked. The plot is a bit 'messy' I'd say. Quite a lot is covered but im not sure every question that the film raises is fully answered. It's certainly a relatively entertaining film - I suppose it is fairly atmospheric, although by no means a particularly substantial film, its good enough to pass the time and it's worth a watch if the cast interests you. Also, of course, it goes without saying that if you don't care for Brannagh's interpretation of Poirot's accent, then this will bother you and you may be better looking for an alternative film.

It felt a bit cliched but, accent aside, its pretty watchable and alright in general.

Some characters aren't as fleshed out as they should be, definitely leaving one with the feeling that we missed something crucial; the plot also progresses slowly for the first half, but when Death on the nile gets sailing, oh did it sail.

I'll have to add that Gal Gadot's acting was a low point for the movie, as against the other cast members she pales considerably.

Great movie but it could be greater!?

Great movies but just okay for the mystery crime movies. In my POV, Death on the Nile (2022) should be greater than the previous movie Murder on the Orient Express (2017) which is based on the novel of the same author by Agatha Christie. I've had some expectations based on the excellent quality of Murder on the Orient Express (2017) which was directed by the same director, Kenneth Branagh. Apparently, their quality is different for me as someone that didn't read the novel or watch the early novel adaptation before. Death on the Nile (2022) is directed through 2 hr 7 min with the cast named Kenneth Branagh, Tom Bateman, Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders, and Letitia Wright. Emma Mackey as the new cast is one of the reasons why the movie is intriguing. I've entertained too through the character's thick accents and their fancy words.

The pros of this movie are the great story and actors, the entertaining genre as a mystery crime movie, and the insightful movie. The story is semi-predictable for me which half of my hypothesis was right but still not the entirety right. The actors are really great, especially Emma Mackey who really stole the show as new cast and Kenneth Branagh is always excellent as the old cast of Hercule Poirot. The genre is one of my typical which is entertaining to analyze and makes a hypothesis about problem-solving. The movie is really insightful for informative details of the storyline and well-interpreted for social knowledge about the Bourgeoisie society. The cons of this movie are the narration of every character seems didn't convincing enough as the murdering motives and the cinematography seems pretty dull. The narration of every character must be convincing enough for a mystery crime movie and sadly it didn't. The cinematography is pretty dull and unrealistic visual through a poor green screen which may be because of low budget production. Overall, Death on the Nile is a mediocre movie and still worth watching if didn't expect anything for mystery crime movies.
