Die-hard Christie purists may be disappointed by some of the changes but, on the whole, Death on the Nile is faithful enough to tell the story and different enough to work better with modern-day concerns about diversity than the original text. Read full review

There's obviously a bit of calculation in introducing more depth to Poirot, making him more interesting for Branagh to play. Yet the filmmakers manage to incorporate that without detracting from the central mystery, and the pace chugs along briskly enough, with plenty of stunning scenery when outside those stuffy cruise rooms. Christie’s story, one of her finest, is hard to screw up, even when Branagh and his returning screenwriter, Michael Green, seem bent on proving otherwise. Except of the weaker start is is an excellent movie with a great cast that delivers an enjoyable experience. It is a sequel to “Murder on the Orient Express” and is based on the novel with the same name by the queen of crime and detective stories Agatha Christie. It gets really good when the cruise started and it is an intense murder mystery with a remarkable plot. When all parts of the puzzles are brought together it is a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Overall I am divided how to rate it. The beginning is slow and weaker. Maybe even in a way that others quit before it got good. However the later half is clearly a 10/10 for me. I give a 7/10 because it is too good to be a yellow rating (= average on Metacritic).… Expand

Kenneth Branagh is back as detective Hercule Poirot and as director of this film based on Agatha Christie's mystery. He joins the cast on a luxury cruise down the Nile to celebrate the marriage of a couple (Gal Gadot & Armie Hammer). Branagh assumed both tasks in 2017 for Murder on the Orient Express (my review) and the same criticisms apply, so here are excerpts from that review: "He drags things down with tedious cross examinations. Despite the dreary pacing and lack of any sparks from the underplayed cast, the scenery, art direction and cinematography are gorgeous." Pretty much sums it up...again.… Expand

Let's start with something basic and that I need to get off my chest: Gal Gadot can't act. There it is. I said it.
Fortunately 60 minutes into the film her character is taken out of the play, so all the time left in the film after that is strengthened by her absence.

Now speaking of the film in general, the experience itself isn't bad, however it is one that feels incredibly ordinary.
Kenneth Branagh is apparently having fun because you can tell that he is as passionate about this project as he was about Murder on the Orient Express.

And just like that film, the cast here despite not being as lavish as the one of the previous film, it's a good cast. And it's clearly one of the main strengths of this film. Again excluding Gal Gadot of course.

The tone, the style, the mise-en-scene. Everything feels in place, and yet there's no real emotion.
The whole thing in spite of its quality has a routine weight that doesn't help the story at all. An empty atmosphere that lacks complexity.

I understand that not all films should be memorable. Many should just be about having a good time, and Death on the Nile has that, but I think they should also avoid feeling disposable.

The intricacy of the plot depends on how interested you are in the mystery, because this one isn't very good at keeping the intrigue going, and ultimately at that point, that closure ceases to matter, after all, the most important conclusion is for Poirot's character. The rest becomes almost expendable.

Death on the Nile is a basic, average, functional film. Nothing mediocre, just plainly inconsequential.… Expand

Another Orient Express failure. It's modern charm doesn't twinkle with any resonance. Only here to dazzle cultured audiences, while it butchers a classic archetype. Its cast and visual adds nothing. A genre that's become a lost cause, unless Rian johnson is at the helm.
