A resounding movie that at best conveys the incrementing fascism of the radicalized left, and the patriotism of the right alongside it's greatest leaders Abraham Lincoln and Donald J Trump

You know that a documentary is doing something wrong when the infamous far right Richard Spencer is the most relatable character in your film. Until today, I have never watched a documentary by Dinesh D'Souza, and I wish that I could removeYou know that a documentary is doing something wrong when the infamous far right Richard Spencer is the most relatable character in your film. Until today, I have never watched a documentary by Dinesh D'Souza, and I wish that I could remove the 'Until today' from my current sentence, but unfortunately I cannot.

This film is supremely flawed. Some people compare D'Souza to Michael Moore, however whilst Moore's factual evidence goes as far as being skewed (wrong dates, incorrect chronological order), Dinesh feeds the viewers of this film lies. It is actually pretty amusing to try and watch this film sober, the interview with the above mentioned Spencer for example being a particular comic highlight as well as the 'one drop rule ' being too much for the Nazis, but the one scene that had me howling with laughter is the one that suggested that Adolf Hitler was LGBTQ+ friendly, and that seems to be the reason that he was evil?

But most scenes are just plain awkward. There is a enactment of the final days of Sophie Scholl and I feel sorry for her name being in this film, in fact, I feel sorry for Donald Trump having his name in this documentary, in fact, I feel sorry for everybody that has their name in this thing, including some people who I find downright reprehensible. This really pushes the boundaries of what can be taken seriously in film.

Also, D'Souza seems to show a lack of empathy for his characters. He quite frequently insults people for the actions of their fathers. He abuses Hilary Clinton for being taught by a former member of the KKK however he shrugs of Donald Trump's sexual abuse allegations by stating 'We knew that we weren't electing a choir boy. He also blames a victim of the holocaust of being a fascist because he helped empty the properties of certain Jewish people, in fact, the entire Nazi segment comes across as misjudged with D'Souza comparing some of the most vile scientific experiments caused by man with abortion. This is immature.

But ignoring the factual inaccuracy (an understatement) and forgetting the insensitivity towards other human beings, this is a badly made documentary. There are far too many re-enacted scenes, a personal pet peeve that only works in 'Close-Up.' There are too many interviews to maintain interest, D'Souza is not engaging and it is overly preachy. It spends all its time looking into faults with the Democratic party that it doesn't even bother look at the positives of the Republican party.

This is an unnuanced hodge podge of untrue facts, lack of empathy or human emotion and bad filmmaking. I recommend you avoid this flaming turkey of a film that is somehow worse than its ridiculous poster and watch something of interest.

He falsely compares the Democrats to Nazis and argues the southern switch never happened while completely forgetting the Republican party is supported by David Duke, Richard Spencer, white supremacists, and a bunch of dudes who like the confederate flag...
